Speaker 1 (00:03):
Fun Spoken Issues. Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to the Unspoken
Issues Podcast. My goodness, it is good to be back
in the company of some friends that I haven't seen
in quite a while. That's right right over there on
my to me. It's on my right. I have no
idea what your guys have screen set up like, but
(00:25):
on my right is Darry Wait Dairy. Welcome back to
the Unspoken Issues Podcast. Buddy, I missed you.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Missed you too. Thank you for having me. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Over there on the lower right hand corner the man,
the Myth, the Legend, the Unspoken decade himself, Dean Compton.
That's how are you doing?
Speaker 2 (00:46):
That's you?
Speaker 1 (00:47):
That is you? How you doing? Man?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
I'm terrible. I've been crazy. I'm going to crazy school.
I got all the alphabet soup.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
You know you're you're in the process of graduating now.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
I'm probably in three weeks out of crazy school so
I could go back to the real world, which is
much crazier than great.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Yeah, you don't want to go back to that back quick?
Speaker 2 (01:06):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
I don't, I don't what awaitness of my life?
Speaker 1 (01:10):
So good to talk.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
That's when we started, well, I wanted to start this
off on an upbeat, so that's why I wanted to
bring all that up. Just really uplifting. Oh yeah, it's
great to be back. It's great to be talking to
you all again.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
I'm glad you're here. A's Matthew Price Speeding Bullet Comics.
So you celebrated twenty seven years just recently, right.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Twenty seven years this June. Yes, and we just had
our big party, had a big signing.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
It was a good time.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
It's always good to have people come in and talk
about how they've appreciated the shop and it been coming
since they were kids. Very gratifying to have contributed to
people's appreciation of art and literacy.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Love it, love it. I was sitting there about a
week ago, just out of the blue, somebody shot an
idea in my way and said, we need to record
a discussion on nineteen ninety one Marvel Universe Series two
Trading Cards. That was Dean Compton. Dean, why tell the
(02:09):
people why?
Speaker 3 (02:09):
First off, it's the best comic card set of all time.
Everything about it is killer. The artist they got to
do this incredible. It's the set that without this, I
don't know if I get into comic books. I was
a baseball card guy, and so this kind of bridged
baseball cards the comic books for me, and so I've
(02:32):
I've been having fun with this set since nineteen ninety one.
And I think a lot of people like the recent
Debt's Head last year SDCC action figure, like he came
in you know, he came in a box, it looked
like this card set. There's been a lot of variant
covers that have like eight this card set. I think
for a lot of people this was a big deal
and it introduced them to the Marvel universe, the one
(02:52):
card at a time. And then of course there were holograms.
I remember buying the Punisher hologram for five dollars from
somebody at a fleet market outside of Buffalo, New York. Actually,
so it was visiting my grandma and I was like,
this is the coolest thing I've ever seen. So for me,
I think it's the bedrock upon which all of my
appreciation of comic books rests.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, you brought this card set up a couple of
times in earlier episodes because of how it brought you
in and taught you a lot about the characters of
the Marvel universe. Darry do you have any nostalgia or
thoughts here on?
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Well, first, I want to say Dean is wrong. The
best card series of all time is the third one.
That background.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
No, the third one's really good, though it gives it
the solid run for its money.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
All right, I'll take that. I think the.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Third one is probably the second best, at least of
the Marvel Universe sets. You know there's some great, great
card We'll do the third set at some point. If
people like these, we'll go ahead and do it. You
know the rest.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Yeah, I had a couple of these. This thing dropped
just as I was getting into comics. I learned a
lot from reading the backs. This didn't land the way
the third one would the following year, where I just
had to have everyone. I was like, no, I'd rather
die than go with an.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Unfinished What if I don't get Strong Guy?
Speaker 2 (04:06):
That strong Guy card? Maybe today is all? I love
that car where he's reaching over his head car good lord? Wow?
Speaker 1 (04:19):
All right? Matthew Price, what about you, buddy? How did
this card set enter your life? Did you go to
the seven eleven like me and look for these cards?
What was going on over there?
Speaker 4 (04:28):
I bought these as packs were coming out. I think
on Series three I bought a box.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
And moving there.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
Damn, they just bought packs as they were coming out.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Now, I stole Series four from Walmart. I want everyone
to remember that I.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Stole the Series four. Yeah, you steal, you don't buy
the car carbage, absolute carbage.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
I liked the Series four lined up the nines, but
it's not as good as three.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Nobody misses sleigh bag card set is probably the Jim
Lee x Men same.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
That's great, that's my Favorite's.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
Probably my favorite.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
This is maybe Yeah, the two and three Marble sets
are very, very good, and as a DC guy, I
have a saucewat for cosmic cards as well. This is
a great set, top of the line artists at the time.
Exciting to get into these and give it our picks.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
You know what's a great DC set? We should do
the DC Master series because they only really did one
and it was like their Marble masterpieces and it's so good.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
I can remember these cards. I mentioned the seven eleven
and I know I've probably told this story before on
the show. I have fond memories of going to my
grandma's on the weekends. She lived a block from a
seven eleven which had street Fighter time Killers, the arcade games.
I can remember Operational Wolf being in the back. I
(05:49):
wouldn't talk about the real uzzy feel yep. I remember,
you know, I talked my dad and give me a
little bit of money, go play and put some quarters
in the arcade game. And then sure enough you could
go look at the comics on the spinner akra shelf.
And also they had these Marvel cards, these Marvel Universe cards,
and I remember picking up a few packs. I was
(06:10):
not really heavy into collecting them. You guys have more
of an appreciation. A lot of it was when packs
of cards started costing more than garbage pail kids at
a quarterback, I think I started going like, well, I've
got to conserve my money here. What am I going
to do with? What do I need to spend my
money on? Only have so much money to go, you
know that could stretch so far.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
But you know, fall cards left for me because baseball
cards had gotten up to like around that point three
and a half bucks a pack, right, three bucks a
pack for like a score pinnacle for the real stadium club,
the really good stuff. I could get three comics for.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
That, right, So these kind of fell back back of
cards in a comic. I think I got more of
Series one than I do have Series two, but I've
got a few Series two here, so that's kind of
my background on this.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Series one is hilarious with those wins and losses.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Yeah, it was just completely made up a lot.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
So let's real quick before we start getting into our
top five. We had some conversation before the podcast about
the artists that contributed to the set. Indeed, I think
you had an idea of some of the artists that
did contribute. Can you kind of lay out some groundwork
here is what we're going to be seeing.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
I know you're gonna get Eric Larson, Steve Lytel, Art
Adams is probably the star of the set.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Can I ask what did Steve Lytele do? No familiar
with that?
Speaker 3 (07:32):
I reckon eight He was probably his best known work.
He also did some Doom Patrol primarily in the nineties.
Was a covers guy, right, Matt like, he does good work,
but wasn't fast.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
That sounds correct.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
There's definitely books that he did, but I think you're
probably correct.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
There are some other guys. I think Jim Lee's on here,
Ron Limb, even a couple of the image guys. It's
basically everybody who was semi hot at Marble that wasn't
you know, Rob Liefelder, Todd McFarland, you know Silvestrian upside.
You don't get these image guys, but you do get
a couple. And honestly, the only question about this card set,
(08:12):
I mean, the artist is great. I know somewhere there's
a list of everybody who worked on it. The only
question for this stuff is why did they pick some
of the people they picked? Like Saracen. You don't need
a card, bro, He's gonna be dead in like five seconds.
Jigsaw shoot, a guy's gonna live forever. But nobody's thought
about Saracen since that card?
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Are we were at? You guys ready to get in
the top five?
Speaker 3 (08:34):
I want to talk about Saracen some more.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Well, if you do, I've got him listed as my
number five.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
No you don't.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
I have him listed as my number five for the
reasons that you mentioned. I went through this looking card. Yeah, yeah,
I went through this.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Anybody else have Sarahson on their top five? Like I did?
Speaker 4 (08:56):
You?
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Really? Because in the trivia it says that Rocco Casticlone
was one of Punisher's uncles or something. I did not
know that, and now I know that, And just for
that alone, knowing that that was a character that existed
in the Marvel universe, Saracen was in my top five.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Here's another. Mark Bagley did the car. There's another big
name that pops up here.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Well, there you go by Mark Bagley on itself.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
I can't believe.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Un as sure fan, because you remember his appearances.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
I remember what he killed Frank's uncle. It's in Punish.
He's a bastard.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
There you go. He died in.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Punish Your Empty Quarter, one of the most racist puns
books you get.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Oh, everyone dies in the Punisher books everyone.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
But they're not all racist, and that one's pretty racist.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
That's true. That's also true.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
Bear with me here, guys. I want to share my screen.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
So number five, your number five.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
With my number five. There, Darry wordd Sarasen end up
on yours because I had him.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
As number one, because he was the only character, and
he was the only character in this entire thing I
had never heard of. And then I get to him
and he's telling me about Rocko. I'm like, no, you win.
I had such little expectations for this series of cards,
and then I get to that because it's not series
three serious superior to this.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
I don't want to have any more conversations with you.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Let me get my reasoning out for putting him on
my list too. So I'm going through this list and
I'm like, no, that guy. I know that guy. These
are Marvel superheroes.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Now.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
I am a Punisher fan. I've enjoyed some Punisher comics.
I don't know if I've ever read anything with Saracen
in it. That's how I was sitting there, going, who
is this guy again? So I read to the back
and I'm like, oh, yeah, curtured up. He's he killed
the Punisher's uncle. And then I'm like, okay, how many
appearances does Saracen have? This card counts as his tenth?
(10:49):
All right, he.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Shouldn't have had a card. That's why I run.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Him up, right, dude, I'm so glad you did. That's hilarious.
All right. So then my number five, Dari, let's go
to you. What's your number five?
Speaker 2 (11:02):
My number five is the sub Mariner card because it
was not until this very day that I realized that
the character he's shown writing is a completely different, unrelated
Marvel character named the Griffin, And I just love the
fact that for no reason, Memore is riding this thing.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
If you saw this card and you were like, goddamn,
I'd like to see more weird steam stuff with the
sub mariner. It was in the book John byrn was
doing it for you.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Oh of course, Sean Byrne. Okay, you know what. Then
it definitely stays his number five known. This was a
weird John Byrne.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Think this guy used to be like a person. And
he's like, hey, you lost your mind a little bit?
What if I rode you?
Speaker 2 (11:42):
That's what I'm saying. That's really weird. It's like he's
known for being.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
Yeah, that is weird.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
He can already fly. It's like.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
His ankle wings are cut off at this point.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Yeah right now, see they're drawn on the car, right right.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
Hey, there's no rules here, no rules.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Knowledge umber and there are no rules.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
What's funny though, is that my girlfriend Emily and I
were looking at the car and said she puts She's like,
why is that guy ride another guy? That guy looks
like too much like a person to be roade. I'm like,
well that it turns out.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
Sure enough. All right, Dan, you're number five.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Brother, all right, my number five is card number thirteen
iron Man.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Okay, why iron Man?
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Because look at how cool that card is. They got
the circuitry in the back. It's one of my favorites,
like my second favorite armor. This armor doesn't get any love,
but I love this big boot armor. You look at
this and you're like, it's cool. It's got cool information
on the back. But I can just show you the front.
You're like, iron Man, got it. He does robot suit stuff.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
War crimes. Can't forget the war crimes.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Now, he's not a war criminal yet, give up a
little time war criminal.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
In his first appearance, he is a war criminal. He's
like at arms dealer.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
He's telling them the oh, I'm not talking about Tony Stark.
I'm talking about iron Man himself. Thank you all the bodyguard,
the bodyguard, thank you. No, you're right. He was always
a war criminal, but Art Adams made it look really
good here, so you've got to give us some credit.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
When it came to looking at these cards, I was
really basing some of my stuff that I was going
for on visuals, and this one stood out. Didn't make
it though, and Scarlet Witch is also another one. For
some reason, this stood out to me. I didn't pick her,
but some of this card art's beautiful based off of
mine on the card art, So I guess it's back
(13:39):
then my number four. This is card number twenty three.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
It is Puck.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
The only reason I chose Puck at number four was
because the information on the back blew me away. I
had no idea how short Puck actually was. According to this,
he's he's like Puck. Well, yeah, I mean the name
fits three foot six though two hundred and twenty five pounds.
(14:09):
I mean that is a small, girthy guy.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
There's a reason for like he's got the most messed
up back.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Yeah, he's kind of a demon trapped in him. That's weird,
Like he used.
Speaker 5 (14:22):
To be big Canada. That he's Puck and not bowling ball,
right right.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
I thought the same thing. I was, like, he's got
to be Pucked for Canada's.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
You know, not right right?
Speaker 3 (14:33):
Yeah, possibly for a Midsummer's Night's stream.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Right, But that's what I always assumed because I was
a pretentious kid. Yeah, I watched a lot of gargoyles,
so I assumed it was a reference to Puck from
Shakespeare until I got older and I realized, oh, this
is a pun because Canadians like hockey.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
It's right, Why can't it be both?
Speaker 2 (14:52):
Oh so disappointed.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
Just because of the information I learned on the back
and the arts. Great, we get Puck. Wh I'm sure
he's probably still out there doing some stuff. But man,
probably he's out there. He's out there pucking. But yeah,
so there you go. Ask my number four. That was Puck.
So there we go to you. Number four for you, sir.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Number four for me has to be the Human Torch
versus the sub Mariner in their Conflicts sub series. I
remember getting this back in the day and I was
very confused because I thought it was going to be
about Johnny Storm fighting Maymore in one of their random appearances.
And I read the back and suddenly it's about a
comment from the like, you know, the War. I had
(15:38):
no idea there was an original Human Torch. A couple
of years later, for whatever reason, maybe there was an
Invader series at the time, Marvel reprinted that original battle
and I remember buying it. It was first Golden Age comic
I read. I fell in love with it. I was like, oh, man,
these things used to be way more violent. These are
two characters are trying to kill each other and they
are destroying New York in the process. So reading that was.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
Like the saves the baby for some reason.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
Well very last second, they realized like, oh wait a second,
someone's got to be good here. That one always holds
a special place.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
I got this in my first ever pack of these cards.
Oh yeah, I remember, I knew who the Human Torch was.
The Fantastic Four were somewhat common knowledge. Everybody kind of
knew the Fantastic Four, and that was the same. I
also knew in baseball you call them a submariner, so
it's a submariner. My mom was like, he's the submarriger.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
I was like, oh, okay, what's the submariner?
Speaker 3 (16:30):
And throw underhanded or a picture who throws very low
a submarine? Guy Quison Kansas City Royals was like that
he threw basically underhanded.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
I did take my time and go through these and
read the backs of most of these. I did not
know that the Human Torch worked for the police.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Yeah everybody did, then, Buddy, Okay, well well well no,
actually that's a really interesting story, right because when these
characters are create they're terrified.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Like what's big at the time in media it's movie monsters. Right,
We've got this brand new thing cinema. It's all monsters.
It's all horrific things. Or at the height of the
Great Depression, the human Torch is like a Frankenstein creation.
He lights on fire. He's terrifying the sub Mariners like,
I'm gonna sink everyone and everything. None of you are
gonna escape. I'm saying, we don't yet have the Nazis's villains.
(17:26):
And then yeah, they start realizing, wait a second, these
guys got to come around. We're selling a kid. So suddenly,
like Jim Hammond becomes a police officer in the NYPD,
the sub Mariner's got a girlfriend who's a police officer.
Suddenly Superman starts fighting a lot less like Batman. Yeah yeah,
Superman starts fighting fewer industrialists and more supernatural entities. Like
(17:48):
they realize, oh, this is subversive, like outsider art. We
gotta make sure the kids know that bad people are
the ones who are different from us and not those
in charge.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
That was number four. Then Dean compon, You're number four.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Doctor Octopus came very close to making the list.
Speaker 4 (18:06):
I agreed with the DFC. Here that's a.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
All right, I let us know why ding.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
That is Doctor Octopus and his Eric Larson glory. I
don't think Derek Larsen crew this actually, but he is.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Oh he did.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Larsen put him in the suit, gave him the cigarette,
made him all of a sudden, doc Oclas cool as
cool as the ponche jumpsuit. Doctor Octopus is. I love
this card where he's like showing his control. He's got
the cigarette. Plus nobody smokes anymore, right, so you know
we don't get to see that anymore. But he's got
perfect control with his tentacle hand holding a cigarette, smoke
(18:43):
going all around him, and then on the back you
get to realize what is just a dipshit Doctor Octopus is.
I love Doctor one of the first guys I learned
about because he was in the Spider Man cartoon, and
I want to say he fought the Hulk in the
Hulks first cartoon in like the early eighties. Those are
the spin off from The Amazing Friends. So I've always
been a somewhat of a fan, but this just really
(19:04):
gets across that early nineties doc ok in a way
that it's just a snapshot at the time, and it's
just a great piece.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
The reason, one of the reasons I think it's Larson
is Larson does the Hobgoblin card and the Rhino card
and they're also like very kind of tightly cropped interestingly. Yeah,
so I think it goes along with that thematically.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
All right, doc oc number four. That all right, then
I guess I'm at number three. So number three for
me is going to be card number two Daredevil. Anybody
have that on their list?
Speaker 5 (19:45):
I honorable mentioned him.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
Okay, I was staring at it. It's so card it's
Remeda Jr.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
Right, it's gotta be. I mean, it's so beautiful, and
I think, how to look through all these cards, and
I don't know if there's another Remeda Junior in this set.
There may be, but that looks like Remina Junior. However,
what made me pick this one, aside from the art,
was the fact that Daredevil's taste buds are so cute.
(20:15):
He can identify every ingredient of anything he eats or drinks.
That is the best tidbit that I think that I
pulled out of this whole set. I love the fact
that this man dude, right, I've never read a comic book,
(20:35):
and I'm sure this probably showed up in a Daredevil
comic at some point, but I've not read a Daredevil
comic where that has impacted the plot in any way.
But it's pretty useful that tastes like ingredient. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
If somebody makes a new thing like that's a tetracarbohydro, how.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
Would he know?
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Like, I would not want to serve him food ever,
because he would know, like, and he would always that's
what you got too much pepper in that. I'd be like,
how can you tell?
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Man? This was actually a big deal in the Mark
Wade Chris Somny run, where they decided because you know,
he's supposed to be in Hell's Kitchens on the West
Side of New York and every restaurant is every smell
is every awful smell you can think of, and they
a large part of that was just him walking up
and down Ninth Avenue and just being like, I I
(21:29):
need to spend all of my focus and all of
my ninja meditation blocking out all of this, or else
I'm gonna lose my mind and murder everyone, Like at
one point he's.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
Nostrils, Yeah, pretty much.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
Why don't you just leave New York? You can go
to rock you can get the hell out of here.
You don't have to stay here and be bombarded by
this hundred different things he could have done. And the
one time he leaves the city, where's he going? He
goes to San Francisco, which has to smell worse than here.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Matt, did you have any thing on why you had
him on your list?
Speaker 4 (22:01):
And mostly went with Art Miller inspired for meat a piece.
To me, he's like dancing on the edge of the rooftop. Almost,
He's not just running across the rooftops. He's on the
edge of it, so I don't know.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
And he's leaning over and he's looking down right like
he's definitely looking at something.
Speaker 3 (22:17):
He's either looking at a.
Speaker 1 (22:23):
Cards connected somehow.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
I want Frank's staring at him through a the a site.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
Yeah yeah, all right, okay, So that was my number three, Darry,
what's your number three?
Speaker 2 (22:36):
Oh? This one? This one. I love that this series
has an X Force rookie card. That just made me
so happy. You know, I'm not a sport guy, but
I love X Force. I loved it. Back then. I
love it now and going through here and looking at
this picture of all these different characters and being like,
this is it. This is a new These child soldiers
and this weird guy with no origin, these are going
(22:58):
to be a hot new team of nineteen ninety. And
I just got to kick out of it because you know,
there's so many characters in here who either you know,
wouldn't survive to today or they are Saracen. And then
you got X Force and you got the rookie card,
and you know they're gonna go on to do great things.
And just brought a smile on my face.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
When I wrote about Rob Leifelt's X Force on the site,
I made the joke that I prefer to think of
them not as having the headquarters that's unknown so much
as they just share one with the Ribbler, and it's a.
Speaker 5 (23:28):
Big ques unknown.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
Also, like this card and the New Fantastic Four card,
their rookies, none of them rookies whatsoever. These guys were
the new Mutants. The New Fantastic Four is Wolverine, spider Man,
ghost Driver is a rookie, and the concept Matthew Price,
I understand, but I addish.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
Star is a rookie is a rookie. Domino is a rookie,
and Cable is a rookie. That's four. That's four out
of scene.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
Not a rookie. He's got a shady path.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Oh all right, fine.
Speaker 5 (24:04):
I liked the ex Force had a rookie cart. I
kind of wish it had been a life felt drawing.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Okay has his own card in this set somehow, not
a rookie card.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
So I don't know if you guys can see it there,
but I assume the artist's name is Morgan. That's the
one person that I couldn't nail down. Who has any idea?
Speaker 5 (24:23):
Is it Tom?
Speaker 2 (24:25):
All right?
Speaker 1 (24:26):
I remember looking through these and seeing he's done a
few of them that will pop up throughout the series,
and then I couldn't figure out who it was a
unique signature.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Look look down at New Fantastic four. I just realized
that Wolverine's claws are breaking through the panels. That's actually, okay,
that's great design.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
That's my top.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Art. Adams Man, I was just singing his praises he
recovers on an action run from the early two thousands. Man,
that guy's great. I met him at New York just
nothing about to say about him.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Truly.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
He told me he doesn't like you, but otherwise.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
That I would believe that. I would believe that. I
absolutely would believe.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
The hero of this set. I read an article about
this set and I couldn't find it anywhere, but in
it he said, I loved it so much I drew.
He drew his stuff at like twice the sizes they
needed because he was having just loved doing it. And
then he's like, I wanted him to let me just
do the next set. I was like, ah, just let
me do it. They're like, we don't do that. Then
two months later, Joe just goes marvel Man and he's like,
(25:29):
what the hell I thought we didn't do that may
but yeah, he is the hero of this set, just
to give it so good coming through so good.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
Agreed, all right, so that a lot, it's all great.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
There's nobody who's pulling behive here.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
He really makes use of like you don't have a
lot of canvas, and you can't put in too much
detail that can be out of focus. I mean, I
don't have the technical expertise, but I'm looking at these
things now. Thirty four years later, they still agree and
they still look like con to use the compressed space
really well.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
All right, Dane, your number three?
Speaker 3 (26:07):
All right, number ninety six Avengers versus King.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
Oh almost made my list.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
I mean, it's just gorgeous. This is some Steve Little stuff.
One of the things I liked about this card sent
is there'd be some shit that would happen that would
like this is the only thing that I had to
connect me to the Marble universe. At this point. There's
no moon dragging card, yet here she is on this card.
I have a mystery to solve. Now, who's this guy
on the far end? What turns out it's the Vision
But this card said was you know, the gray one.
(26:42):
But like this, this card has it all. It's very powerful.
It shows how powerful King is. It's got all the
Avengers looking cool but also looking like they might not
be able to handle it. But they do on the
back with their like heads looking at them. It's really
cool too, where you know, I feel like they're being
pretty judging and they should. King's kind of a Derek
he is he is. I say this to gain it again.
(27:02):
It's just a gorgeous card, and it epitomizes that entire
conflict I think I got it in my second pack,
and I was like, I gotta find out more about
these guys.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Oh yeah, good pick. All right, Matthew Price, Let's see
what you got. Number three.
Speaker 4 (27:18):
I feel like I'm getting basic on these, but number
three is my favorite of all time.
Speaker 5 (27:25):
Captain America. Uh card fifty four, Where are You?
Speaker 3 (27:31):
I love that card, dude.
Speaker 5 (27:33):
It's got a lot of depth to it.
Speaker 4 (27:35):
A cap is protecting this kid, the trees in the
background and the bullets coming at him. Artistically, it's really good.
Character wise, it's really good. Captain America's Shield is not
a bad card either, It's by Ron Limb, but this
just has more background and character to it. So I
went with the main Captain America card is my number three?
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Nice?
Speaker 1 (27:54):
Yeah, I like that one. Good pick. Anything else to
have boys? Where we number two?
Speaker 3 (28:00):
But I liked about it was that it shows Captain
America's character just in a second because he's defending someone,
he's protective US Agent's card. He's going out looking for action.
Captain America's making sure an innocent gets away.
Speaker 5 (28:11):
And that's a pretty good US Agent card.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
He's like the leaping over a fence, Like who can
I go kick in the head because.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
They made him move to Los Angeles, and he's like,
please let me get away from these people. This is awful.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
He wouldn't be happy anywhere he went.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
I have ever told you, guys my head kenon, I
think John Walker, who I love. I'm staring at a
John Walker toy as I speak. I think he's gay.
I think he's in the closet. I have this theory,
and I no one has yet for otherwise. I guess
in the most recent movie you see is married with
a child, so that that might kick it.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
I've never thought about it, Gonna be honest.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
But I think I stole it from someone. I think
I read an article or something. But I'm such a
fan of the character. For a while, I was assuming
it was true and waiting for someone to counteract it
in media, and it didn't happen again until I.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
Like us Agent the same reason. I like Guy Gardner,
and he shows that people who are not necessarily good
people will get superpowers, but he will still do good things.
We just won't want to be around them. Yeah, I'm
glad you were there to hold up that bridge, but
now could you please get the fuck out of here?
Speaker 2 (29:14):
The US agent. It's like, you know, as Hydra coming
over the hill. Okay, great, he'll probably deal with that.
But I absolutely do not want to have to sit
in enclosed space and talk to him for three hours.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
No way, that's his real superpower. He should just try
and talk to people.
Speaker 5 (29:34):
So like he's defeating hider. Guys, where are we going
after this? Yeah, we don't know. I think we're going home,
but I think we're done.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
We're done, all right? So number two for me. I
don't know if this is higher on anybody else's list.
And no, Matt, you had it, but I have the
Infinity golet.
Speaker 5 (29:49):
M That's why I had that at four. Yeah, at four.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
I want to give you the floor here, man, what's
your thoughts on the Infinity?
Speaker 2 (29:57):
Gotlet.
Speaker 4 (29:59):
That's a great story line, and the image pulls from
that storyline with Theanos holding it and cementing his power.
Speaker 5 (30:07):
It's a great raw Limb image. Rong Limb had several.
Speaker 4 (30:09):
Good cards in here, and I kind of wanted to
note him somewhere. You know, there was some other ones
that he did that I liked in here, but I thought, well,
this is really captures that anger of Theanos. And then
and the power of the gauntlet. There's not a lot
of background, but I like the green color.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
Yeah, I mean, this is the mad Titan, you know,
flexing his power with that glove on his hand exactly,
and it is imposing. You're looking up at him. You know,
how tall is he? I know we have a Thanos card,
didn't we. He's like, yeah, sent something. He's big, So
he's a big dude. You're gonna be looking up at him.
And then he asked the Infinity Gauntlet on his hand.
And you know the other thing that solidified it had
(30:44):
number two for me is obviously this is a card.
We got a few of these object cards, Dean. They
called him like weapons weapons. Well right here, I guess
it says it right up there in the top right
my bat I should have read. But yeah, you know,
of these, there's a few big ones in here, Benny
Gotlin being one of them, the other one being the
Ultimate Noli Fire.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
I got Ultimate nol Fier in my first pack. Okay,
but the most important one is obviously punished his arsenal.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
Yeah, yeah, I'm with Dean on that.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
That one guns.
Speaker 5 (31:15):
I assume that was gonna be your one, two and three.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
Right, I gonna want to take these from Dean.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
The Infinity Goblet card is so sick.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
Though to know why the Infinity Gauntlet is so great
the brilliance of Jim Starlin. The whole point of the
first appearance of the Infinity Gauntlet is that the smartest,
most ancient, most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, the
conceptual beings, the Elders, whatever you want to call them,
no one ever thought to get these things, put them
in one place, and just do whatever you want with it.
(31:45):
They're constantly telling Tonos, oh, these are just trinkets or bobbles.
You don't know what you're talking about. That. I was
just like, all right, I'll wait you out. And then
he tricks each one of them. When he gets it,
he surprises everyone. It's the most Marvel story because he
gets everything and he suddenly this big threat and everyone's like,
oh man, we could have prevented that by just doing
a little bit more research. But I always loved that
(32:07):
because before Thanos considered putting them on his own glove,
there was no Infinity you know, Soul Gem and five
other things that no one really knew what to do with.
I love that story. So much.
Speaker 3 (32:19):
I also love everybody's like in the Infinity Gauler in
the Silver Surfers issues leading up to they're like, how
could he be doing this? And they're like, you mean
doing the same thing he did the last time he
was around, the cause of the Tube and kill everybody.
You mean, the exact same goddamn thing. You can't believe
that he's doing it again. I can't believe the cows
are out again. We didn't fix the fins.
Speaker 2 (32:40):
Come on, Yeah, it's the same story. He's there's one
Thonos story that Jim Starlin did. He did it like
six times, and I love every time he did it,
But it's just the one story. He's gonna monologue, he's
gonna gather infinite power and then at the very last
second realized that he is his own downflall. It's a
great story, but it's always the same story hit each other,
(33:03):
and I apologize. There are two final stories.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
I like the wordplay that it's the Infinity Gauntlet. It's
literally a glove, but it's also the heroes have to
go through the Infinity.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
I remember, like two years ago when I was reading
The Infinity Gauntlet again and that dawned on me, and
Emily was like, Oh, you didn't know that the whole time?
Speaker 1 (33:29):
What I love?
Speaker 3 (33:29):
This shits like thirty years that she's this first all.
You didn't realize that the whole time. Yep, take image.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
I'm off the fourth one of the other things, which
I don't know if we have any other weapons that
are going to be popping up here on the list,
but you know, the weapons call the weapons cards gives
you dimensions. So if you are just if you are
a maker and you want to go out there and
try to make something that matches the dimensions on the
back of these cards. I'd love to see somebody walking
around a con with a two hundred plus pound gauntlet
(33:59):
on their hands, but I don't think that's going to
be happening.
Speaker 5 (34:02):
It's not two pounds. I have an Infinity Gauntlet at
home at home, guys.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
Yeah, we have it at home.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
How about how about what a gimp shit that Quasar
looks like on his quantum band's card.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
I was going to say that as well, Yeah, Ter will.
Speaker 3 (34:17):
Look for Quasar. It looks like you would just take
the quantum bands from him, and he just kicked him
in the nuts.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
I thought you could actually every Wendell Vaughn's story ever
read make me think it would be very easy to
take those things from him.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Yeah, and remember in the Infinity Gaunlet when Dennis just
like cuts them off. He's like, ah, you idiot, man,
I I you cut off Quasar's quantum man.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
I never got Quasar. I wanted to. I love Mark Rouenwald,
I wanted to like the character, but I just couldn't
do it.
Speaker 4 (34:50):
Some of the comics are actually okay, but I think
you have to go into it with I think is
writing him as a guy who's ineffective and unprepared for this.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
Right, that's fair?
Speaker 3 (35:00):
Yeah, all right, if you're interested in watching someone's fail, man,
do I have sixty issues of a comic book for you?
I mean, I know, I mean that in a nice way, slow, but.
Speaker 4 (35:13):
It is sort of like what if a random H
and R block guy got cosmic powers.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
He's not a random block guy, he was.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
He's a shield agent, right, Like He's.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
What I'm saying.
Speaker 5 (35:25):
He's about, Like as if.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
It's not like a howling commando. You're right. I mean,
most of any security agency is like the back office
people are the people who don't have guns. I'm with
you there.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
He's not literally one, but his effectiveness is about like, oh,
you know, you mean Randy got the.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
Not Randy. You don't give Randy cosmic power.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
So that was my number two. Then Darry, you're number two.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
My number two. It is two of the cards featuring
the Mandarin, who is a villain that I thought reading
these cards as a child, was it going to be
a much bigger deal than he actually turned out to be,
regardless of his starring role on the Iron Man series,
but his own solo card, which I thought was a
great visual. I think it's the best the character has
(36:21):
ever looked. And then later on then I was gonna
say it's tied with his rings, because again, if you
don't know who the Manner is, well, but I'm saying
I didn't know that when I was a kid, I
had no idea who this person was. But then you
read this and you're like, wait a second, he's got
ten rings and every ring does something like picture you
(36:45):
have never read an Iron Bool before, right, Like I
was reading this and I was like, oh man, the
manderin this guy is awesome.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
And then.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Lantern because he had rings, That's.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
What I'm saying each one does something different. There's no
mention that they run out of power or anything. With
Green Lantern, it's always like, oh, twenty four hours, who's
the battery runs out? He's gonna fall to the sky.
But this was one of those things where your mind
does all the work for you, and I was like, oh, man,
the Mandarin. I had no idea what that one. I
didn't even know what that word meant. And I was
just like, this must be a top shelf super villain.
(37:18):
And then you finally learn about him, and I was
just like, oh, no, racist caricature hold over? Okay, right, No.
I will say watching Tony long play him and Shang
Chee was the best thing about that movie because I
loved him.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
When you said you were gonna cheat and pick two cards,
my mind went right here.
Speaker 6 (37:35):
I thought, you're gonna go, oh yeah, very good, stay
on a checklist. You know that car Mandarin. They still
tried to get him over is a big deal for
the rest of the decade. Like he's the main bad
guy on the Iron Man cardon.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Yeah, well that's what I was saying. Like him, but
he's like green skin, give give us.
Speaker 4 (38:00):
The main treatment, right, yes, you're pretty racist in the nineties, guys.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
We've got a lot of work to do still. But like, yeah,
but after that cartoon, it's like a cliff like he's done,
He's done. Honestly, it's a good concept. If you got
away from some of this racist iconography or found a
way to have the character reclaim it in a way,
maybe you could make work today. You definitely want an
(38:27):
Asian American to handle it. And they powered a spaceship
who looked at the spaceship engine that's just can't raise me, like,
let me grab those all right?
Speaker 1 (38:40):
So that was number two for Dairy. Then Dean Compton,
you have your number two? What's up.
Speaker 3 (38:48):
Number one? The New Fantastic four. I once brought this
card with me to work for Luck. I had a
really bad day one day, and the next day I
was like, I gotta have some backup. I'm bringing to
the new fan the regular Fantastic cour What could they
possibly do? I need a new loving.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
And supporting as they are to each other.
Speaker 3 (39:09):
That's true, that's true. But what I needed was the
wholk throwing wolverine in a fastball spectrole.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Yeah, yeah, shame Honestly.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
Also, ghost Rider over here absolutely not belonging to this
team whatsoever.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
Someone was like, we got a fire guy. He's doing unexpectedly, well,
throw him on. His head's already on fire. He looks
like a death metal album thro on there.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
I think it was Art Adams Ward Adams draws. If
Walt Simons was right in it. It was like a joke,
we'll take all the hot characters and replace the Fantastic War.
But it's only a two weeks. You say, they come
back every now, and they I think Punisher was supposed
to be one of them and they wanted replacing him
with Hulk. And Punisher does make an appearance in one
of the two issues that he's in, though he's got
(39:53):
a helmet on. He's in a helicopter.
Speaker 1 (39:55):
He's in a helicopter.
Speaker 2 (39:56):
Should have been their Herbie. Like they walk around the
four Dam's plausa, they have no idea how any of
this stuff works, because aside from Spider Man and I
guess first Banner, none of them could figure it out.
And then Punishers just walking around being like, oh man,
look at this, Look at all these places for my guns.
This is crazy.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
Now you could have shot and got Big Four at
the top of the Four Freedom's. Plus this is the
first time I saw the four Freedom of Splause. I
thought it was the coolest shit in the world. For years,
I was like, why would they go back to the
Baxter Building when they have this Look at this giant
four at the top of the building. But I'm back
to me classic. I understand why they go back now,
but I still prefer this. There's a difference between my
(40:37):
preference and understanding why the powers that be do the
things they do. I understand why they wanted back to
the Bacheter Building me personally, though I never would have
taken them out of this. I don't redult that after
the Infinity War.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
It's funny too, because if you read the original Kirby comics,
the Baxter Building is just forty second in Madison. It's
not supposed to be like. The whole novelty of it
is that it's mundane. They get kicked out a bunch
of time.
Speaker 3 (41:03):
Yeah, but they built a rocket car that thing.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
I know. I'm just saying that. Like years later. I
think it was Burne who was like, Okay, we're gonna
give them an iconic Skyscreper before Avengers Tower, before anything else.
You know, really pump up that Marvelus skyline. Why would
you ever go backwards? That? For Freedom's Plasa design was flawless.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
You know, I agree with you. I get why people
prefer the classics, That's all I'm saying. In some cases,
I prefer the classics. This isn't one of them, but
I understand that people sometimes prefer the classics.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
Matt, did you say you had this on your list?
Speaker 4 (41:34):
Yeah, this was my number five. It's the Fastball Special
with Wolverine and Hulk. You get the Danny Ketch ghost Rider.
I think he's actually a little cooler here than on
his actual card because his motorcycles on it.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
I agree, And.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
Then you actually got Spider Man. It's all drawn by
Art Adams, and it's a rookie card.
Speaker 3 (41:49):
These rookies, Oh Man, Wolverine, that poor rookie. But I
do get it a new team, and I I like.
I love that aspect of it too, and honestly have
and trying to read everything regarding the new Fantastic Four.
I've seen these guys get together again a couple of times.
I don't ever want them to wear the Fantastic Four outfits.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
No, why not?
Speaker 3 (42:13):
I want them to be like the way they are here,
I don't want them to have the fours.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
They got to wear the outfits.
Speaker 5 (42:17):
Maybe it's just like a pin.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
No, because that's the whole joke, right, Like, what's the
difference between these four and the original Defenders. We're always like,
we're not a team. We all have soul titles. We
want nothing to do with each other. Here it's like, no,
you're the Fantastic four that comes with a clubhouse and resources.
Speaker 3 (42:36):
They stay together in the alternate universes yet, but in
the main universe where they haven't stayed together, when they
get back together, I like it when they're just wearing
their clothes, but they stay together. Yes, they have to
have the four, Like I.
Speaker 2 (42:47):
Guess, I guess where I was going with that is.
I always thought it would be funny catch it doesn't
really work because he's too new of a character. But
the other three are like they're always like, oh, we
have to work alone, we have to be loaners or
whatever else. But the three of them, more than anything
else in the world, want to belong right. Like the
second that Hulk is accepted by everyone else he shows up,
it pops up his chest. He gets all excited. Logan
(43:09):
wears a yellow and blue costume to protect children, and
he has done so for about fifty years, and Spider
Man has been on the desk for like six other times.
Speaker 3 (43:17):
So I was like, but this is the first time.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
True. True, You're right, but I.
Speaker 3 (43:23):
Liked listen when Spider Man's Fantastic four and in other steps.
I love when he puts up like the Fantastic Futures costume,
the onast one. Oh man, that is so cool. I
just like, I just like for these four guys to
accidentally get together, you know what I mean, especially if
I was doing a big crossover, like if I was
riding up like at some point, like these four would
make a stand, or even if it was Johnny Blaze,
(43:45):
you can make a stand that does need me. But
you can be like, oh, like I said, that's you
guys again. Yeah, I'm tired of you already.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
All right? Then, Matt, you got number two? What's your
number two?
Speaker 5 (44:00):
Or two?
Speaker 4 (44:00):
And Dean and I talked about this. A little bit
is by the Master Jim Lee by Terry Austin. Card
number seventeen, gambit, gambit, I got one.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (44:13):
I just like Gambit. He's one of my favorite characters.
Speaker 4 (44:15):
He looks cool here he's throwing the cards at the
camera and got the completely ridiculous superhero outfit with the
trench coat flapping in the wind and the pink armor
with the stripes.
Speaker 5 (44:27):
Down the side.
Speaker 4 (44:27):
I mean, the costume is just crazy, but it works somehow.
This is way early in his appearance. Early, he's made
very few appearances of my time. This card comes out,
he just looks cool.
Speaker 1 (44:39):
The back of it. I mean, real name unknown. I
don't think it's very much longer after this find out
what his real name is. But first appearance August of
nineteen ninety. You know, as I was going through, his.
Speaker 5 (44:50):
Weight is unknown. They couldn't get him on a scale.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Chris threatened to murder anyone who gave details about them.
Rea Pounds, I'll kill you and right the eulogy, so please.
Speaker 3 (45:09):
They if memory serves you. Two.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
Don't like Gambit, I don't like jam I don't care
that twenty twenty four was like a big resurgence. I
loved him in Wolverine and Deadpool. That stupid show had
him die. I still think he's a crappy character. I
don't care that he died saving everyone.
Speaker 1 (45:27):
Oh wow, So okay, now you pegged me wrong, because
I don't hate Gambit or anything like that. Remember we
were talking about X Men ninety seven and we were
all excited because Darry was jumping into it. I just
watched that episode and I was waiting to hear what
Darry said, and my soul was crushed by his reaction.
But either way, I love the mystery of this guy here.
(45:47):
He is the X Trader. That was the thing that
was cool.
Speaker 2 (45:51):
Yeah, that was cool.
Speaker 7 (45:52):
Remember when all it took to sell like like five
hundred thousand books a month was to put like some
mute with a mysterious past, six gamb cable, Bishop Wolvery Rogue.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
Rogue did not have a real name until the movie
came out, and then Claremont did a whole arc disproving that,
like his whole thing of making someone have a mysterious backstory,
to have his characters like that.
Speaker 4 (46:17):
Well, it works though, I mean it works for him definitely,
because I think that was his way of keeping the
stories going. He would just drop little breadcrumbs. It would
be more difficult now when people don't stay on books
that long. But for the Claremont run it worked great.
Speaker 3 (46:32):
A lot easier. Would you stay on a book for
like sixteen.
Speaker 5 (46:35):
Seventeen years or so? Yeah, And I know that part
of where he'son.
Speaker 4 (46:39):
I like gamb Is because I picked up his first
appearance off the off the news stand as a as
a kid, and it was.
Speaker 5 (46:48):
Just I was just into the X Men back then.
Speaker 4 (46:50):
But oh yeah, but yeah, anyway, So that's I understand.
If people want to make a logical debate with you
about the flaws of gambit character, it's like, yeah, I
understand all of that, but I just think he's fun.
Speaker 3 (47:03):
I understand the blows of Gambit's character as well. But
he also throws playing cards and has a trench coat
and come with a moostaff and takes care of business.
Speaker 4 (47:14):
And he's got the thing that was big in the nineties,
a mask that isn't really a mask.
Speaker 5 (47:19):
It just sort of covers the forehead.
Speaker 2 (47:22):
It's called a head sock. It's from the Fourth World.
A lot of people in the nineties ward for some reason,
very fat.
Speaker 4 (47:28):
I get to keep their their I don't know, chin,
not even his chin to keep you warm.
Speaker 3 (47:34):
Mostly nothing.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
Nothing. He's gonna combine with the other Forever people to
make Infinity Man, I.
Speaker 3 (47:41):
Would listen if there was an X Men Forever people
cross over a game, but absolutely drives the super Wolverine
out to drive the Supercycle and then.
Speaker 2 (47:51):
He spends the entire time flirting with a Motherbox like
not even one of the Furies.
Speaker 3 (47:55):
Just listen, take take My five ninety nine.
Speaker 4 (48:03):
In some ways, I like Gambit for the same reasons.
I like Baker Mayfield. He was on my team. He
was cocky as could be, but he got it done.
You get sure everybody that's not on his team doesn't
like him. You don't care he's on the team.
Speaker 2 (48:18):
You like see a Giant.
Speaker 1 (48:22):
He was a Cleveland Brown and now he plays for
Tampa Bay Bay.
Speaker 2 (48:29):
All sound like made up teams? They are. Yes.
Speaker 1 (48:38):
Uh, by the way, I did you know? Till now,
I did not realize this was Jim Lee. I went
through these cars and if there was anything that I
was going to pick that would have topped my list
art wise, it would have been a Jim Lee cars.
So this is a good pick. Was there another League
card in the series.
Speaker 4 (48:53):
It might have been one or two others, but definitely
have a because that was an honorable mention.
Speaker 5 (48:58):
For me, it's another really good Jim Lee nice.
Speaker 1 (49:02):
All right, So we've come to this moment where everybody's
going to declare what they're number one top Marvel Universe
nineteen ninety one Series two card is going to be
I will start in. That is card number fifty, and
that's Wolverine. I don't know if this is on anybody's.
Speaker 3 (49:25):
Imagine to be fought sarasn.
Speaker 1 (49:32):
First off, I am assuming our atoms on this one.
I don't you can see.
Speaker 3 (49:38):
If the signature's on there. It's in the barbed.
Speaker 1 (49:40):
Lyre right down in here. Okay, yeah, everything about this card.
This is brown and yellow. You know, we're just about
to hit Actually, has that happened in Has Spider Man
happened yet? Where he puts the yellow and blue back on?
I can't remember because this is mid to late nineteen
ninety one when this series drops. Clearly they're not using
(50:01):
it in this card, so I would assume they would
have probably wanted to.
Speaker 2 (50:05):
Know.
Speaker 3 (50:06):
Okay, beloved series.
Speaker 2 (50:10):
But it's good.
Speaker 3 (50:12):
It is very good.
Speaker 1 (50:13):
The number one reason that this is at the top
of the list is because the first appearance of Wolverine,
according to this card, is incredible Hulk from October of
nineteen seventy four, and there have been debates. Possibly you
(50:34):
may have seen them online as the one. The first
appearance is of Wolverine. And what I love about this
I could lay this card down. This settles, This settles everything.
Charge me so much funny.
Speaker 2 (50:47):
It's not wrong. We all got to agree with that.
Like we may not want it to be right, but
the card is not wrong.
Speaker 3 (50:56):
It really depends on how you define appearance.
Speaker 2 (50:58):
If the Hulk come I had ended with one eighty,
the last page of the last issue would be the
appearance of this weird yellow character named the Wolverine that
we never saw again. His first appearance is Hulk one eighty.
We all just like one eighty one because it's one
of the best covers of all time.
Speaker 1 (51:17):
Logan is one foot four inches taller than Puck.
Speaker 4 (51:24):
So you were just picking short kings.
Speaker 1 (51:26):
That's my number one Wolverine fifty specifically because of that card.
Speaker 2 (51:33):
Back.
Speaker 1 (51:33):
I love the art. The art looks fantastic. This is
a great card. This is one of the hottest characters
in the nineteen nineties for sure, been around for a while,
but still white hot at this point. That's where I
want to leave it. So that's my number one, Darry,
you have your number one. My number one was that's right,
we're going, oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (51:53):
But someone else said that, so in then the intermediarreya,
I bumped up someone else.
Speaker 1 (51:58):
Great, great, Great.
Speaker 2 (51:59):
The Hawkeye it's so bad. So Hawkeye is.
Speaker 3 (52:06):
The worst Hawkeye costume memory except for the skirt.
Speaker 2 (52:09):
It's the worst Hawkeye costume of all time. He doesn't
even wear it in the other group shots in this
same set. Look at that. It's awful. It's worse than
the Union Jack Card. I tell you, I can't get
over how terrible that costume is. It just made me
so angry. It's like when you read a Superman comic
(52:32):
from a certain period of time and he's electric blue.
You know. Someone on the team was like, we just
wait a few months for this to be over so
we can draw the actual character of Superman. That's what
this is. I don't even remember why he's wearing that nonsense.
It might have something to do with they did a
story where he was deaf. This might have something to
do with the first one. But I would just look
at this and I'm like, this is the absolute worst outfit.
(52:53):
This amazing top shelf character ever had and is immortalized
in Marvel Series two, and it's just made me so.
Speaker 3 (53:00):
I remember reading Avenger's West Coast and he just has it.
He just put then there's no real reason for it.
But as quick as he puts it on, he takes
it off. I guess where. It's only like three inches
and they're like.
Speaker 2 (53:11):
Which is why I don't understand how it ended up
on this thing, like it's so random.
Speaker 1 (53:14):
I'll agree with you. There, that's a rough threat rendition
of Hawkeye. Well so that was your number one, Dean Compton,
number one?
Speaker 2 (53:27):
All right?
Speaker 3 (53:28):
Well I've got a number one and a number one,
all right then, because it's not fair because I have
the cards in front of me, but I also have
the holograms, and so the holograms are just a step above.
My favorite card of the regular set is number eighty five,
(53:49):
which is Statos. I think this is the Guard Adams.
I remember thinking, this guy's like the coolest guy, like
just looking, you know, he's got these minions. There's Lady
Death next to him. I remember at school with these
like with these like pretty girls. I had somehow convinced
(54:12):
him to play a game that I had admitted with
my Marble cards, was the best guy you could be.
Look at those stats. You're trying to get the Theano's card.
I remember rest of it all weekend, making up some
rules for the game so that we would be better.
Never played it against sixth grade heartbreak. But that's what
Theatu's and I had in common. He was trying to
(54:32):
impress Lady Death. I was trying to impress Beth of
the Mines. Both these women controlled the minions of the undead.
Speaker 2 (54:42):
So I.
Speaker 1 (54:44):
Want to know how you fared here. Did you impress
the ladies?
Speaker 2 (54:47):
No?
Speaker 3 (54:47):
Absolutely not no, no, no.
Speaker 4 (54:51):
So.
Speaker 1 (54:53):
Well no.
Speaker 3 (54:53):
But I mean I don't think this was the reason
I didn't. Honest, they didn't. Hell, I mean, they played
the fucking game. They had fun playing the game. You know,
you know if one day we didn't play the game,
you're in sixth grade, things like that happened.
Speaker 2 (55:08):
It's true.
Speaker 1 (55:09):
It is a badass card, though. I mean, now look
at that.
Speaker 3 (55:12):
I mean, he looks all all of his like what
we would find out to be is more or less
impotent grandeurman. Man, he looks cool as hell. You can't
go out with it?
Speaker 1 (55:21):
Yeah, great, great pick, But the.
Speaker 3 (55:24):
Best card in the whole set is card H three,
The Punisher hologram. I got a helicopter. It's got Punisher
with two oozzies taking care of business.
Speaker 1 (55:33):
He's got the bandana on too, right, Yeah, he got
the big.
Speaker 3 (55:36):
Inn on the back too. Now let me also say
this about that and the three arch enemies cards. Two
of them are what against King Pana, ones against Jigsaw
and those he's clean cut, really nice looking on the back,
but the one against Daredevil, they scuzz him up like this.
Come on, man, that's propaganda. Come on, he looks he
looks very clean cut, handsome when he's playing the bad guys,
(55:58):
but you scuzz him up when he's fighting Daredevil. I
know propaganda when I see it.
Speaker 2 (56:04):
But this is so cool. If there's one person who
knows propaganda is competent, I do.
Speaker 3 (56:09):
And that's propaganda you're trying to portray. You're trying to
portray it differently here because it suits an agenda. All
of the holograms are great, don't get me wrong, But
how could you not pick the Punisher where he's just
taking care of business.
Speaker 4 (56:23):
The whole hologram is pretty cool too. If we're talking
about the holograms because he kind of smash them through
the wall there.
Speaker 5 (56:28):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, it's just if you're holding it.
Speaker 4 (56:31):
It's pretty cool because he's like when he's just coming
through the coming through the wall at you.
Speaker 1 (56:37):
Yeah, okay, his fist is out in front. That's neat.
Speaker 3 (56:39):
They're great, They're honestly great. I'm so glad I have them.
That's the best Punisher's Arsenal's great, don't get me wrong.
But I only wanted to pick one. Punish your card.
The hologram is a special thing since everybody doesn't have them.
Speaker 2 (56:52):
So wait, are you none of your picks? Did you
have the actual Punisher card by Eric Larson? No, see,
I put it off. I didn't want to pick it.
I assumed that would be on you.
Speaker 3 (57:03):
I wanted to do something special for the that was
actually that's a night card. A friend of mine when
I was in seventh grade grew that card for me
for my bird. I'm perfect rendition.
Speaker 2 (57:13):
In all honesty, my favorite one. I'm such a huge
Eric Larsen fan that when I saw that pun a
shirt if that was a post try to hang that
up now like that.
Speaker 3 (57:21):
Just one handed? Who's he just letting it go let
it riprgeous.
Speaker 2 (57:25):
Absolutely gorgeous. He nails everything I like about the character.
It says iconic now as it was then. It's just
no notes. I love it.
Speaker 1 (57:35):
All right, Matthew Price number one on your list.
Speaker 4 (57:40):
I feel like I'm gonna be a little obvious, but
my number one card is.
Speaker 5 (57:45):
Actually the number one card, No Larson. It's just such
a cool iconic one and he's upside down and I
love Eric Clarson Spider Man. He gets a little bit
of New York City behind him.
Speaker 3 (57:59):
The black red is tight.
Speaker 4 (58:01):
Larson just does a cool Spider Man. And so that's
my number one card in the set. I started and
I went through and I was like, Okay, what's going
to knock these off? And I said, well, Spider Man
was on my list the whole time, so I guess
that's my favorite one.
Speaker 1 (58:13):
Spider Man was on my honorable mentions and the reason
why I had him on there was to talk about
the art with you guys. Mark Bagley has a few
cards in this set. He is about to take over
on Spider Man. I think here because Larson's going to
finish his runout on at three fifty. Is that what
it is? I can't remember. Okay, so Bagley's about to
(58:38):
take over. What's kind of cool to see that we
still have some Larson art here. I saw Peter Parker
and I was like, that is Larson. It feels like
all the way great pick.
Speaker 3 (58:49):
I know, it seems like basic and just not like
a big swap, but swapping out the blacken for the blue.
I would buy that action. Oh that, I gotta get that.
Speaker 2 (58:58):
Yeah, I like it too. Originally did Coo had purple
and orange in mine. So I always think to myself,
the custom is so iconic and the patterns work so
well that you could swap in a bunch of crap.
I think the black looks. I would buy that book.
I think it looks so good.
Speaker 1 (59:14):
Good pick. And I think Spider Man worthy of being
number one in the set for sure. This is the
character or Marvel. I love it.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
But even that, you know, look at the composition right
like this is this is heralding the nineties, right gone?
Is that like John remita straight up kind of thing,
which I love. I'm not in any way taking away
from John Romita, but the nineties, you know, Todd McFarland
famously said, why can't he be in the weird postes
did go put him in the weird posts? Look at
(59:42):
this right, like, this is the first card, this is
the brand, this is the Marvel figurehead. He's on all
the underwear, and here he is upside down going over
New York. Things are happening. It's a dynamic post. Couldn't
put Batman a Superman in this. It's great. It's a
statement of purpose. I love it. I think this card
is great. It was back then, it was now, and
there's nothing ever changing about it.
Speaker 5 (01:00:03):
Love it.
Speaker 1 (01:00:04):
All right, let's get into our audible mentions here. I'll
go through mine real quick. So the Wolverine versus Hulk.
The visual here is grey Hulk versus Wolverine, which is interesting.
It's an interesting choice. And the back shows Gray Hulk
Wolverine as well. But just to kind of solidify things,
(01:00:25):
first encounter Hulk number one eighty All right, I'm moving
on meted up.
Speaker 3 (01:00:29):
I got that card in my first pack as well.
Oh yeah, and I remember being like, I can't believe
Haulk's great here, but now I think they're trying to
homage Hulk three point forty. The McFarlane cover with the
reflection of the Claus because Hulk was gray there and
this is that Wolverine suit, but I think they're trying
(01:00:50):
to reference.
Speaker 1 (01:00:51):
That, all right. Next up is Sabertooth, and this has
an interaction thing Sabretooth. Did you know it is rumored
that Sabertooth may be the father of the heroic X
Man known as Wolverine. You guys going around.
Speaker 2 (01:01:09):
He's still Cannon as far as I'm concerned.
Speaker 1 (01:01:13):
And then we already talked about Spider Man. He was
my final runner up here. So that was my honorable mentions, Dary,
did you have any on your end?
Speaker 2 (01:01:22):
I did my honorable mentions, and again I'm gonna cheat
a little bit here, all of the legends because I
love these cars. I don't even think Johnny Blaze is dead.
They're putting up a gravestone here. The Green Goland one
is great because I want to go back to a
period of time where this character was just dead and
no one remembered him, even the Bucky one, the Captain
Marvel Won. They're just the most iconic poses and they're
(01:01:45):
just like, hey, you might not need to know who
these characters are, but they were important at some point.
The Craven one ninety percent shadows. You don't even see
the definition on his face. They're just great designs each one.
I really don't have a bad thing to say about them,
and I love that that was something that they did.
It wasn't just the deceased. It was like the legends.
These are the characters had amazing stories and they have
(01:02:06):
passed into legend. You might come across them and you're
reading Journey you may not be either way. He wants
you to know about them. So I just really enjoyed
that subset.
Speaker 3 (01:02:14):
Because they added texture to it, like, oh man, this
universe has been going on. It made these seem more
exactly this little greenness here. It's a new Fantastic four.
Speaker 5 (01:02:22):
It could be.
Speaker 3 (01:02:25):
A real character like death Luck or Sleepwalker. You might
you know, You're like, well, you know, I remember seeing this,
be like, hey, they could be legends you know later, No, that's.
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
Exactly what it was. You don't know who's going to
have an amazing death and only be in comics for
a few times. It was cool to be like, oh, hey,
Kepsain Marvel was a really huge deal if you were
around in the seventies. But he is dead and he
probably ain't coming back. He's gonna have a son next year.
That's a whole different thing. But again, if you've never
read these men, read the death, stay in this one.
I want to know. So this was really interesting.
Speaker 3 (01:02:55):
I also think the original ghost Writer like they were
just bringing him back because he'll have his own card
in the next set.
Speaker 2 (01:03:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:03:03):
Yeah, And like I think they were reprinting. They were
doing that original Ghostwriter mini series which was just reprints
with new covers, So I think they were like, you know,
kind of a little synergy there.
Speaker 1 (01:03:14):
Yeah, agreed, all right, all right, Nan, honorable mentions any
of them?
Speaker 2 (01:03:22):
All right?
Speaker 3 (01:03:22):
So number seven, mister fantastic, excellent choice. It's a cool guard.
He's stretching around and he's got a gun. He's got
a giant fucking photon gun and he's and it's got
this like triggering mechanism that only he could use because
he's got to put his hand into it. So I
like that. And what else do I got there?
Speaker 2 (01:03:46):
You go?
Speaker 1 (01:03:47):
Now what a crazy looking trigger mechanisms.
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
Fantastic of course, and he's stretching into it. You also
got number thirty nine ghost Writer, which I think it's
like I prefer that, like he'd be having his motorcycle,
but honestly for not having his motorcycle. This is really
cool and really it's Art Adams again. It really evokes
the feel of the Book of the Time. It's in
(01:04:11):
a green yard and the chains are prominent. I really
like this card even though it does not have the
motorcycle on it. And also I like on the back
they're like, would you like to see Dan Ketch's face?
Fuck you, it's ghost Rider's head.
Speaker 2 (01:04:25):
Dan Ketch has the most generic face and anymore.
Speaker 3 (01:04:28):
Absolutely he could be in imagine dragons. I wouldn't know.
I love this card. I love this absolutely on this cart.
And my last honorable mention, oh no, I have two
mores number seventy mysterio.
Speaker 1 (01:04:46):
I thought stood out.
Speaker 3 (01:04:47):
It was hard not to put it in there, like
it was one of the last ones I eliminated because man,
does it feel creepy? And I think this is a
Steve Widele joint. It's really really yees.
Speaker 5 (01:04:59):
Do you think that be Larson? Look at the face
on the back, Well.
Speaker 3 (01:05:03):
I thought the signature said Steve Widel.
Speaker 5 (01:05:05):
I just thought that face of kind of larceny on
the back of it.
Speaker 3 (01:05:08):
Well, the face could be You're right. That doesn't look larseny.
That sounds treacherous, right, yeah, larceny. We're about to steal.
We're like Mysterio. We're about to spend twenty five billion
dollars to steal two millions. Watch out.
Speaker 2 (01:05:25):
Well.
Speaker 3 (01:05:25):
And my last honorable mention was just because I wanted
to get one punisher card in here. Otherwise was Punisher
versus Kingpin because it epitomizes their conflict very well.
Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
True, mostly muscle.
Speaker 3 (01:05:36):
And that's what I almost picked his card. His card's
really his card. But yeah, I like the dichotomy here.
I like that they're fighting in what appears to be
an underground playhouse, so good for them. I like the
faces on the back. You look at that clean cut
Frank Castle. You go to the dared double card Punisher
versus Darable. He's not like that, he's becuz this.
Speaker 1 (01:05:57):
Is a badly Joe Senate.
Speaker 3 (01:05:59):
I guess that's what I believe. Badley doesn't underrated the
punisher guy. He's done a great punisher as long as
he's been around. My honorable mentions, you know, and I
could go on and on. This is such a great
card set.
Speaker 1 (01:06:12):
All right, Matthew Price, what do you got.
Speaker 4 (01:06:14):
For your Okay, so I wrote I mean, I wrote
down thirteen honorable mentions.
Speaker 5 (01:06:18):
So I'm gonna kind of zip through him. Some of
them we said before.
Speaker 4 (01:06:21):
But Havoc is a really cool Jim Lee card, so
that's why he's on there.
Speaker 5 (01:06:26):
Captain America Shield was Ron Lim who's drew on the
Kaptain a couple of time.
Speaker 4 (01:06:29):
Daredevil. We talked about Rhyino. We talked about a little bit.
I have Rhino with Doc both on there as this
kind of cool Larson close crop.
Speaker 1 (01:06:37):
Yeah, just real quick about the Rhino card. Yeah, we
didn't know his name at this time.
Speaker 5 (01:06:43):
Like whoa no good thing.
Speaker 2 (01:06:47):
Because they were trying to push the Originally he had
this ridiculous Russian name and then they came up with
an American name and it was a whole thing for
a while, and then there was like is a new
Rhino with different characters, but you.
Speaker 1 (01:07:01):
Never okay, gotcha?
Speaker 5 (01:07:03):
Yeah, but look up like you look like you're about
to run over by him. You know that's pretty cool?
Speaker 1 (01:07:09):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (01:07:09):
The thing I like his card?
Speaker 4 (01:07:11):
Yeah, the Fantastic Four Team card I thought was pretty good.
Speaker 5 (01:07:16):
See Rogue and she Hulk, I have both of them
on there. Those are both.
Speaker 3 (01:07:19):
Card I have that action figure that costume because of
that card.
Speaker 2 (01:07:24):
Oh wow, you have that costume.
Speaker 3 (01:07:27):
The action figure with that costume.
Speaker 2 (01:07:29):
That's not what I heard.
Speaker 3 (01:07:32):
I like, rogue. I just admitted, like, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:07:38):
I take it back.
Speaker 4 (01:07:41):
We might have talked about Daredevil versus Electra, which is
a nice action word, Silver Surfer versus Galactus, I know
you talked about Wolverine versus Hulk, And then my last one,
all my honorable mentions is Spider Man versus Doctor Octopus,
which I think is also a Larson card. So yeah,
I just had a whole bunch that I liked, but
I just kind of thought, well, I'm not gonna talk
a lot about all though some of them were fair.
Speaker 2 (01:08:02):
To say that Daredevil an Electro fought. Is that really
not better described as foreplay for them?
Speaker 5 (01:08:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:08:10):
Isn't that a fun Spider Man versus Doctor Octopus guard there?
Speaker 3 (01:08:13):
Yeah, man, I love how tangled tangled up Spider Man
is like, it's just wild out. Doctor Octopus is smoking,
looking cool.
Speaker 1 (01:08:21):
Second card with him smoking.
Speaker 3 (01:08:24):
They wanted to get that over for whatever reason. Thank
your Daddy's Doctor Octopus. He smokes, He's got a suit.
Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
Do you guys not remember that when we started reading,
everyone had a cigar in their mouth. Everyone. Remember, Yeah,
I didn't even like it's just so omnipressing. Like I
remember when when Cassada was like no more, characters, don't
smoke anymore. It was like night and day in the
early nineties. Everyone.
Speaker 4 (01:08:48):
It's a good idea for the reasons, he said, But
I think it gave people cool stuff to draw. It's
why they did it for so long. So like, you
can add the panel, put some smoke in here.
Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
Yeah. Man, what's the story about the Golden Age Vision?
He was created because someone walked into Simon and Kirby's
studio and there was so much cigar smoke behind the
closed door. They were like, oh man, we should do
something with this, and Jack scrawled down the original Golden
Age Vision. I'm gonna have a smoke cloud. Supposedly that's
how it happened. I don't know that's true.
Speaker 1 (01:09:15):
