(00:06):
Hey Michelle, Hey Erica, Welcometo the spin Chicks. Another exciting podcast
on top. We've got a goodguess, but we're not going to get
to that yet. We're going toleave you in suspense, exactly exactly.
I think we're going to talk alittle bit about inspiration today because that's what

(00:28):
this guest has done for us.So let's talk a little bit about what
inspires you. Michelle, tell mewhat inspires you. Stepping on the scale
inspires me to stop eating? Okay, wasn't expecting that. Was not expecting
that? Okay, what inspires me? So I've told you about this before.

(00:51):
We our neighbors, Matt and Ashleyhave two kids, Savannah and Rhett,
and I love when Rhett comes overover and plays games. He's we've
known him since he was three, maybe two or three. You have in
the neighborhood wherever it comes over andright, well, I mean, I
don't want to brag or anything, but you know you do you do all

(01:14):
right, but we love when hecomes over. His name's Rhett. He
was named well, his dad saidthey went both the parents went to Florida.
We always joke he was named afterEric Rhett, who played football at
but his wife doesn't think that's thatfunny. But anyway, he comes over.
He's got a lot of activity whenhe's here, and there's things he's
not allowed to touch, just acouple of things, but anything else is

(01:38):
fair game. He likes to takethe lemons that I haven't a container,
that are fake lemons and hide himall over the house and I'm constantly finding
him like months later, like,oh my god, I cannot believe he
hid this there. But what Iwas going to say about inspire is he
comes over. We played Monopoly togetherfor months. We just kept the board
set up and he had never playedbefore. And he's you know, he

(02:00):
was six when we started. Nowhe's seven. But he really inspired me
by just how much he loved toplay and just how excited he got about
playing the game and how excited hegot, like if he would send me
to jail, or he would,I would have to pay him a fine.
He just got really really excited. And it was just fun because it

(02:22):
made it really fun for me becausea lot of times people will be like,
I don't want to play Monopoly,that's boring. I don't want to
play card six hours. Yeah,I mean I mean literally months. He
would come over. Some days hewould come over and play for three hours
and my husband would walk through andbe like, are you still playing Monopoly.
I'd be like, yep, yep, still playing. So h that's

(02:43):
sweet, that's sweet. We goout and shoot baskets, play frisbee,
come back in and play Monopoly. So what character did he like? Like?
What little game piece did he always? I think he was the shoe.
Well, the game went on,we never took the board down for
months. He was the shoe, and I think maybe I was the witch
maybe nice okay, okay, orthe scarecrow. I'm not sure that's a

(03:07):
classic. Monopoli is a classic. What inspires you, Well, I'll tell
you what I think. I'm acreative person by nature, so I can.
I think going to college campuses alwaysand I don't always get to do
this, and I've gotten to doit in different capacity, whether it's through
work or through my kids, butthat has always been like one of my
number one things. I look forwardto it. I try to soak it

(03:27):
all in, get some different inspiration. But speaking of college campuses, and
when you saw Riley Green, ohoh yeah, yeah, well that was
you know that was fun too, because that's music, sports, you know,
all that intersecting. But back tomy inspiration, I'm gonna take a
little deviation and go with I wasfortunate my son played football at Dayton,

(03:49):
and I was fortunate enough to meetin his class a bunch of moms and
families that I'll tell you what.At Dayton, we kind of had our
own tailgate. We set it up. I mean it, doing a little
different there, okay, quoting RileyGreen, doing a little different other and
it's it's cool though, I meanit's a different scale of it. But

(04:09):
I'm telling you I miss it.I miss it, and I just want
to shout out to those moms becauseI know they A couple of them have
listened to the podcast. They eventoasted the podcast, I'm told, so
I do want to say that aroundtoasted by saying there was this girl quote
I don't know. We used todrink champagne, your favorite with them.

(04:30):
It was different round here, someof the raspberries. All I'm saying is
great group of ladies, And toall the moms out there that just continue
to support their kids playing sports andeven on campus and tailgates. I mean
that's just classic right there, andit it was it was always what rain
or shine? It was amazing food, amazing company, and it's a lifetime

(04:51):
of memories. I will say that. So I hope she's drinking tonight.
I know you've got this hold up. You do not know all these songs.
Stop. If it wasn't for trucks, we would never have this tailgate.
I don't know, all right, all right, well, speaking of
inspiration was a hell of a wayto go to a segue. You're funny,

(05:15):
But now we need to introduce ourguest. Speaking of singing, Our
next guest has an amazing voice.Oh and ps, she's also a great
track runner for the game Cocks. She's a two time NCA relay champ.
Chavon Stoddard Nietto that were now married, has two kids. It's married to

(05:38):
Jamie. She was on two Olympicteams. She's got a fascinating story.
Oh so her athletic life is fascinating. The reason that she decided not to
run in the twenty sixteen Olympics withJamaica again after being the face of Puma
for years. With this amazing songbirdvoice is going to absolutely bring tears to

(06:00):
your eyes of sadness and of joy. And she is by far the most
positive person and the most upbeat, sweet person we've had on the podcast yet.
Oh, I couldn't agree more.Again, I am so thankful to
be introduced to another one of thegame Cock divas that you worked with South

(06:23):
Carolina Track and Field. Let meget you an honorary game Cock Diva,
I feel like, but to seeyou know, you make the connection.
You worked with them very closely duringtheir collegiate careers. Many of them have
gone on to professional and now they'rein their next chapters. And Chavon didn't
necessarily you know, maybe in hermind she wrote her own chapter, but

(06:43):
there were some things that came alongthe way that she didn't expect. And
to hear her story, to hearher beautiful voice, beautiful voice. And
we also got a few sneak peeks. I know this isn't a video podcast
yet, but we saw two ofher beautiful boys. Amazing episode and again,
very inspiring. You can't leave thatinterview without just just feeling super positive.

(07:09):
And we like positive here, Yeswe try, That's what I tell
people. We're a positive podcast. So without further ado cheve. Let's do
it, Erica. We've got Chaffanon with us right now. Chaan,
thank you so much for joining us. Yes, I'm so happy to be
speaking with you. It's been solong. It has been I mean,

(07:30):
you've had two kids since the lasttime. Now, I know, I
still can't believe you got married andeverything. So I've heard so many great
things about you. So I'm lookingforward to talking with you today. Oh
yeah, no, I've been lookingforward today. Yes, So we're gonna
get We're not gonna mess around today. We're going to get right in because

(07:51):
you We've got a lot of thingswe want to talk first about. You
competed for Jamake, got in twoor three Olympics, two Olympics, World
Championships, three World championships, Sotalk about what that was like to train
with I mean, you know,we you know, you've lived in America,

(08:13):
so you know, we think we'rethe best in track and field and
we've got to take we've got totake our our docent medicine on the sprints.
So what was that like training?Did you go to camps with the
with those people and what was thatlike to train with them? Oh?
Well, just just just making itonto the Jamaican team was just pretty amazing

(08:35):
experience, you know, and Idid that as a junior at South Carolina,
So, you know, making thatfirst Olympic team and just being on
the making team, just knowing that, you know, at the time,
they were the you know, wehad the fastest people in the world on
our Jamaican team, and I knewthat going out for the team was going
to be very hard, very difficult. Wasn't going to be easy at all.

(08:58):
And I felt like I felt likemaybe no one else knew that I
was going to make that team exceptmyself, because this was a dream that
I've had since a young child, you know, when I was just started
running track and you know, soto make it to the Olympics and to
compete at such a big stage withthe world's just running being on the Jamaican

(09:20):
team was just a pretty special momentfor me. You know, I chose
to run for Jamaica because I wasborn in Jamaica. I left Jamaica,
you know, when I was almostfive years old and came to New York
Uniondale, New York, and myhalf of my family, you know,
still in Jamaica and half you know, in New York. So for me

(09:43):
to go back down to Jamaica andsee my family there, my grandma and
my aunts and cousins, and forthem to watch me run at the stadium
was a pretty special moment for me. You know, I've always even though
I left Jamaica at a young age, I went back every holiday we could
until I got to high school, pretty much because that's when track started,
you know, really picking up.I started running track, and you know,

(10:07):
our schedule was pretty busy, soI didn't get to go back,
you know, for Christmas and thoseholidays that were normally did go back for.
But you know, making it onthat team, being on the team
with one of the some of theworld's fastest runners, it was it was
pretty amazing. And to do itas a college athlete was he And the
collegiates that you ran with at SouthCarolina, I mean you ran with Lucinda

(10:30):
Demas, who's going to be thegold medalist, Yeah for the USA when
she gets yeah, I hope shegets it in I hope she gets it
in Paris. There's something, yeahthat could happen. Wait, yeah,
she's been she's been Friday. Uhno, no, no, no,
I'm sorry, the medal that twothousand, oh yes, yeah, yeah,

(10:52):
yeah yeah. So in twenty twelveErica, she was a two thousands.
Yeah, she won the gold medal. I'm sorry she went the silver,
but the Russian has since tested positiveand it's been the metal has been
taken away. So Lashinda is waitingto get the medal. And there's some
conversation and hopefully we'll have her onthe podcast sooner or later to talk about

(11:13):
that. Anyway, I don't wantto talk about that. I want to
talk about more about you. Soyou were so in when you were training
and you were the face of Pumaat some Yes, you were one of
their siss Okay, so you werea brand ambassador correct, yes, yes,
yes, you did a photo shootwith Usain Bolt. Yes, okay,

(11:33):
we need to hear every single well, you know, yeah, fast
forward into that part. You know, with all the success that I had
at University of South Carolina, Iwas able to get a professional contract first
with Adidas and then I transferred overto Puma. And you know, I've
been with Puma, ran with Pupafor about nine years. And you know,

(11:56):
just like any other athlete, youhave ups and downs and it was
this point in my career. Ithink it was after two thousand and eight
when I made the Olympic team andI moved to Atlanta, Georgia. And
actually when I after I got there, I was run and super great because
coming off of two thousand and eight, that was a great year for me,
you know, rant top ten inthe world and running you know fast.
And I got hurt when I gotto Atlanta. I had an ankle

(12:20):
injury, a chiropractice orthopedics. Theygave me some orthopedics for my shoes,
and like after a week it jammedmy ankle, but it jammed it really
bad that it took me. Ittook me out for a while. And
at that point I was like,oh my god, Like what am I
gonna do? Am I gonna losemy contract? I don't know. But

(12:43):
when I was hurt, I waslike, Okay, I'm training, but
what am I going to do?And as you know, Michelle, at
South Carolina, I always sang forthe team. I always sang with a
team. So I said, okay, well, if I'm not going to
be able to run, let mewrite, let me write some music,
Let me work on my music. At this point, and that's what I
did. I got with some producersin Atlanta, I wrote songs. I

(13:05):
wrote a song for Puma called Goand they loved it. And actually during
that year I was going different placesfor Puma, performing my Go song at
different events for them, and itwas just pretty amazing because it was like,
Wow, look at this time whereI'm hurt and I think that what

(13:26):
am I gonna do? And howdoes SO go? How could you sing
us a couple of bars? Couldyou want to hear this? Don't you?
Yeah? I knew. I knewthat you had some musical talent,
clearly, but I talent like,ye, how did that weighed more like
track music? Or then now you'retelling how it kind of went together a

(13:46):
little bit? Yeah, you know, music was actually my first love.
I started taking voice lessons at eightyears old, and I wanted to be
a singer. I wanted to bejust like Whitney Houston. So I took
voice lessons and and actually when Iwas in high school, that's what I
was pursuing, is a career inmusic. But I also knew that,

(14:07):
you know. I was also NewYork state champion twice in the four hundred
meter hurdles, and you know,I was running really fast. So I
knew that I had the opportunity toget a scholarship on the track side,
and my education was really important atthat time. So I knew that I'd
have this voice forever, but Iwouldn't be fast forever. So let me
go ahead and take advantage of myathletic, you know side, and get

(14:33):
my degree and how to get myeducation. So music has always been there
in my heart. On the team, I'm always singing to the athletes,
whether it's out South Carolina, whetherwe're at the Olympics. The athletes they
always knew that I sang, soyou know, it was always that's how
they always knew me as the singer. The singer, and some athletes actually

(14:54):
asked me when I was on theJamaican team, They're like, wait,
why are you running? Why areyou running? You know, trying to
sing us a little bit of gowe want to hear hear what? Oh,
you know, let's just go.Is like I like this fast the
uh you know a song that Iwrote, you know about being on the

(15:15):
track. It's like I hear themusic and it drives me crazy. Take
in the music. Tell me.I feel the vibe. I'm feeling all
right, I'm feeling like I'm aboutto set it off tonight. I'm in
control and I'm about the breaker recordand lose control. So Wenny Flans Many
Frozen and the shout to the topof your lungs and see me go go.
You know what I mean. It'skind of like this upbeat song about
running, you know, and andgoing fast. So I wrote that song

(15:37):
and some other songs, but thatwas the song go and I'll send you
a little video because Puma put itin a video. At that time,
it was really cool to write herown music. I mean, you know
what I'm saying. You can run, you can sing. And just was

(16:00):
that the first song that you wroteor had, oh maybe the first song
that got you put out there?Well, no, no, I would.
I wrote my first song at eightand I have a lot of songs
and just even just your uh.As being an artist, you go through
different stages of where you're at.You know, as eight year old,

(16:22):
I always knew that you had towrite your music, So I write,
I wrote my full song at nineyears old, and then you know,
just going throughout college, I alwayswrote my music and earlier in my career,
but it wasn't and then that specialsong that I did write for Puma,
but it really wasn't until twenty seventeenI started writing my music. But

(16:44):
I was different at this point becausea lot of things has, you know,
has occurred in my life at thistime, you know, the accident
of my husband, and there's justa shift in life. So at that
point, my music also changed, you know, because you know, music
comes from within and speaks from personalexperience for me as a songwriter, and
so my music, you know, transformed, and a lot of things transformed

(17:07):
at that point in my life thatI know I'll share with you later,
but you know, so my songs, you know, they were different,
but you know, so yeah,it's it's definitely a journey, you know,
a great journey when it comes tomusic and track and you know,
being the face of Puma, youknow, at that point where in my
track career where I was hurt andcould not run and I was able to

(17:30):
you know, do my music atthat time, and then my contract was
to the point where now it waseither going to renew or end, and
I got a call from Puma saying, hey, you know, we want
you to be the face of Puma. You know, we got a big
campaign that we're doing. And atthis point, I was like what I
was like, Oh well, I'mhearing like, oh my god, I'm
about to be dropped. I couldn'trun, you know, I haven't been

(17:52):
running great, but you know,I've been singing and performing for them,
So I'm just happy that. Ijust feel completely blas that I was able
to use the other talent. Andthen you know, we flew down to
Miami and and to Jamaica and wetook these shoots and it was you know,
me and the same boat them upto this point, Oh yeah,
yeah, yeah, no, becauseyou know, on the team, a

(18:15):
Jamaican team, we're all you know, we're a small island, so you
know, with the athletes, andwe're all very close, all my friends,
you know friends, and even intwo thousand and four at that time,
Usay was young. Hey you know, he's a young, young,
young athlete at that time, andand it was so funny because I do
remember being at some of the earlierchampionships and we had all this gear and

(18:40):
we would go around in the villageand would sell like, hey, do
you want this Usain boat jersey, you know what I mean, and you
just sell your gear. But youknow, we had a lot of great
times. Like I said, evenat the photo shoot and and performing in
Boston for Puma, it was meand usaining there were like you know and
singing stuff. So it was itwas really fun. It was really fun.

(19:06):
Oh cool. And even in LATimes, like I mean the ads
that we shot, you know, were in LA times, you know,
going into two thousand and eight Olympics, they were everywhere and that was pretty
cool to have people sending in pictureslike hey, with their kids and stuff
standing in front of my photo. That was that was a cool, very

(19:26):
cool moment. Yeah, definitely.Well, I think being a brand ambassador
at that time was that a littledifferent than now? I mean, how
much social media I'm just trying toremember like when exactly hit was that.
Were you doing a lot with socialor wasn't really Yeah kind of at the
time, that wasn't really prominent.Yeah, you know when I was competing

(19:49):
to me, I felt like Iwas doing that long ago, just getting
you know, different sponsors, youknow, from the food I ate to
you know, headphone to vitamins toyou know, the mattress that I slept
on, and you know, Ihad to the food that I ate.
I had a lot of different sponsorsand I would post on my page,

(20:11):
you know, even back then wheneverybody else wasn't doing that, Yeah,
I was doing that. So youknow, just even with my singing and
writing the song for Puma and andjust using that other talent to do that,
you know, I've always capitalized that, and you know, so I'm
happy that other athletes now are startingto, uh, you know, use

(20:32):
social media and represent and use othercompanies to you know, help them to
support them in their career, especiallyin track and field, because you have,
you know, our contracts, butyou know, our contracts. They're
good contracts, but they're not likebasketball contracts. They're not like football contracts
with these super huge and deals. So the more sponsors you get, even

(20:53):
better, you know, especially whenyou can get the things so that you
do need as far as your food, as far as your treatment are,
you know, whatever it is thatyou need, you can get you know,
these companies to support you as youknow, you go out there and
try to make these Olympic teams maybethe best you can be. So let's

(21:14):
talk about Jamie, and let's talkabout his accident. He was in an
accident. He was training athletes andhe was paralyzed from the chest down with
the C three dash C four injuries, C three and C four injury.
And your story has been well documentedon ESPN and every media outlet. I

(21:37):
mean, if anybody googles you, guys, they're going to see so many
heartwarming stories about the two of you. But tell us how you found out
and then what happened next? Yees. So it was twenty sixteen, and
it was April, in April, and and I was training, and I
this was going to be my thirdOlympics that I was preparing to go,

(22:02):
and I would, you know, probably be retiring after this Olympics, but
it was my last one that Iwas going to be shooting for. And
I was training, and then Ireceived a call while I was at my
character practicor just getting you know,a regular treatment, and the number came
in. But when I picked itup, it wasn't Jamie's voice. It

(22:25):
was his athlete that he was trainingat that time's voice. So that was
automatically like, okay, well, why is someone else calling me from Jamie's
phone? And then Jamie, youguys have been dating for this point,
he's your voice. We've been datingsince twenty twelve and at this time is
twenty sixteen. Select for four years. Yeah, yes, So I received

(22:47):
the call and then the athlete tellsme that Jamie was in an accident and
he's being airlifted to the nearest hospital, which was Lac Medical Center. And
you know at that point, youknow, when they said, uh,
airlifted, I knew right away thatthis is bad. You know, this
is bad. You know, it'snot in an ambulance. He's been airlifted,

(23:11):
and and you know, and Ijust remember, you know, just
getting off the phone, you know, and you know, just breaking just
just praying and breaking down into tears, you know, just praying God that
hopefully as I drove, you know, about the thirty minutes that it took

(23:32):
to the hospital, that that hewas going to be okay, that he
was going to be okay, andand knowing and that that thirty minutes was
that thirty minutes was just just justfeel with a lot of prayer, just
hoping that he was going to beokay. That's where my tears came,

(23:52):
because when I showed up at theat the hospital to see Jamie. Those
tears stopped, you know, becausewhen I when I got there, I
wanted to make sure that one Jamiedidn't see me all teared and you know,
crying and everything. But at thismoment, I knew that I had
to be there for him, andI had to be I had to be
strong, I had to be toughby his side. Wow. So,

(24:21):
if I may ask, how didyou guys meet? I mean, it
sounds like you just had an amazingstrong bond at the time that this happened,
And that's a tough thing thing.Yeah, tell us a little bit
of how you met, and thenyeah about Yeah, well it happened after
that. Yes, no, absolutely, you know we met in twenty twelve,

(24:44):
and you know it was funny becauseit was, you know, I
got out of a last relationship andit was one of those things where you're
like, I'm done, I'm notgoing to talk to anyone else. I
just want to be by And youknow how it is when you get out
of you know how it is,You're like, I'm never gonna date anyone
again. And I'm ben But Igot out of a relationship and and I

(25:06):
really thought that, you know, you know, I was hurt and I
really thought that that was it.And it was like maybe like two weeks
later, I met Jamie and itwas funny, you know him, you
know what, a US Olympian.Yes, So the funny thing is I
met I watched Jamie jump which hemade his first Olympics in two thousand and

(25:30):
four Sacramento, California with Jamie Madisand that was his hometown. Jamie made
his first Olympic Games. And hetook off his shirt and he was like
running around the track and I'm like, and I'm sitting at the track actually
at that time with my boyfriend andI had Ben, which was Felix Sanchez
and he was a top four hundredhurdle I'm sitting there watching, but Jamie

(25:52):
caught my eye and I remember becauseI was like, who is this yone
around the Track's high jumper too?So they are rather theatrical. Yeah,
yeah, he's a high jumper too. Yeah. And I'm, you know,
hurdler sprinter. So we're used tolooking at the outside of the track.
We're used to looking at the sprintersin the fast, not as much

(26:15):
on the inside. But this guywas on the inside of the track and
took his shirt off and running around. I was like, who is this
you know? And and then healso looked a little bit like Will Smith,
so it was like it looked likeSmith, So I was like,
who is this guy? And Inever forgot that moment when I saw him

(26:37):
then, And it was so funnybecause I actually never saw Jaming on the
track since, never seen him onthe track at all, which is really
weird because in track and field,I feel like we see everyone, and
like I said, sometimes you know, this wasn't a sprinter. I don't
want to be biased, but Ididn't see as many jumpers. But when
I broke up with my boyfriend anda three years later in twenty twelve,

(27:03):
Jennie popped up, so maybe thatwas God like, now you need to
see him right And And what happenedwas I moved back to LA in twenty
ten because I got hurt in Atlanta, like I told you, and I
moved back to Atlanta to LA soI can train with my this coach that
I had, and I had acommercial audition actually, and at my commercial

(27:27):
audition, Janie was there. Wewere trying out for the same commercial and
I remember gleams of him. Jamiecame over to me say hi, and
Jamie would tell you that I gavehim the cold shoulder because I'm trying to
get this audition, so He's like, Hi, somebody the cold shoulder.
I don't believe it stored me onthat. I was just so focused to

(27:49):
getting audition, which I did.I did right, I did, And
you know, that was the firsttime I got to like see him in
obviously since two thousand four, butstill it was not much, you know,
just like okay. But then Jamiehe released a trailer he was doing
a GoFundMe for a web series thathe was putting together, and I remember

(28:11):
seeing the web series come up.And when I saw the web series,
I was pretty impressed because I waslike, wow, look at this athlete
doing something other than track, andhe was doing it familiar. You definitely
have that in common. I see, yeah, yeah, you know,

(28:32):
he was doing the he put thistogether, and I was so impressed because
it looked really good. It lookedreally good, and I was just like
wow. So that automatically I wasjust like, okay, you can have
my money, you know what Imean, where do I give this money
to, you know, and atthat time gofundly just started, so I
knew one of his friends. Iwasn't really sure about giving the money,

(28:52):
so I called his friend's like, hey, you have a friend Jamie and
he's doing I want to give yousome money so you can give him for
his go fund. So so hedid, and then uh we we we
went to a track meet in Guadaloupe, and when we were in Guadalupe,
Jamie met me there. I sawJamie and and and I can't remember,

(29:15):
I think, yeah, he thinkhe came up to me and said,
hey, you gave some money formy gofund me and I was like yes,
and I was like how's it going? And he was like good.
So he showed me the trailer andeverything, and I was like wow,
like did you show all the athletesand he was like no, and I
was like what. So I startedshowing all the athletes his web series,

(29:36):
you know, because it was prettyamazing. And then you know, we
were talking after that. We bothsaid that we're going to this Jamaica meet
that was happening in our next meet. And in Jamaica, we were all
sitting around the table and I rememberin Boshon, you know Boshon and Michelle
Shan Jackson. Yeah, well whatis nickname? Batman? Okay, did

(29:56):
you want the World Juniors that wasin Jamaica, King, No, I
did it. I did it.Oh okay. Well that's where Batman cussed
me out because he got mad becauseKenny Ferguson beat him. Oh okay,
and co Try pulled him up.Coach Ry saw it happened and came over
and was like, I mean hegot cussed out. And then Rashaun came

(30:17):
back over Batman and was so niceand was like, I sorry I asked
you that way. I was soimmature and really just called himself out and
I was like, it's okay,we're great. I don't have it.
I'm never gonna. I don't.And it was always so nice to be
like, always nice to me afterthat, like, oh, I'm not
supposed to cuss out my media lady. Right, yeah, right, well

(30:41):
there was no there was no cussinin this encounter. There was no there's
no cousin in this one. He'sgrown up now, Yes, I know,
I know, he's doing pretty amazing. Yeah, you know, just
like all our game talk family.Yes, right, yeah. So yeah,
So we were at the table andmakeup, and it was Brashon there

(31:02):
and Jamie was there, and Iwas sitting at the table and we're eating
and then all of a sudden,Boushon, I had, just like I
said before, broke up with myboyfriend about two weeks ago. And we're
eating lunch at the table and Boshon'sjust like, so, hey, Chawon,
are you dating anyone? You know? And I'm just like, I
feel like I'm put on a spotright now, you know, because everyone's

(31:23):
here, Jamie's here. And itwas funny because I'm like, no,
you know what I mean, Ilove it, you know, And and
he just had this like smirk onhis face. And it's so funny because
up until the other day, Jamieand I was talking about the whole situation
how we met, and I wastelling him when Breshon, you know,
asked me that question. And thencomes to find out that Jamie was roommates

(31:47):
with Brashon and in Jamaica, andI guess he must have been asking some
questions. Jamie was asking him somequestions. So Rashon, you know,
I gotta given, like I caremaker, make me a match that's what
it sounds like, right, Soso I said, And and after that,

(32:09):
you know, we had lunch, you know, went to the Trap
meet. Jamie and I talked tolike when we were at the meet,
and we said that we planned toHe me ask me if I wanted to
do lunch at my next meet, which was UCLA, because we both lived
in La. Well I lived inLa and he lived in San Diego,
but UCLAs and Los Angeles. Sohe asked if I wanted to do lunch,

(32:32):
and so I said yes, anduh went back to the States and
we met up at UCLA and we'vebeen together ever since. That's the stars
aligned for for you guys. Definitely, definitely. So then let's go back
to now. You know, you'vegot this serious incident that happened, and

(32:59):
I mean and it was in May. It was April April, okay,
because we saw you at the Stanfordmeet. You had stayed with us in
Los Gato's just a couple of weeksbefore that, yes, yes, yes,
yes, yes. And so ithappened a couple of weeks later.
And so what was his resolve fromthe beginning, I mean, here he

(33:19):
is paralyzed from the chest down, yeah, so you know, yeah,
so when we were in the hospitaland you know, we knew that he
had to do the MRIH, theysaid that his spine was that his uh,
the disk was pressing on his spine, that they had to have surgery
right away. At that point,Jamie could no longer feel from the chest

(33:43):
down. He couldn't feel from thechest down. He only felt like tingling
and his body from the moment whenhe even land after the accident because he
was doing a jump and he Jamiejust these flips back dumps all the time,
you know, to end his careerand he's and he's this particular day
at a Susan college, his footslipped and he landed on his head.

(34:04):
So, you know, after thesurgery, you know, the doctor she
came in to see him and hehe didn't show her. She didn't see
what she really wanted to see fromJamie. So she said, let's give
it, you know, a couplemore days, and she's going to come
back to see if she sees moremovement. And she came back again and
she didn't. She didn't see whatshe wanted to see. And she told

(34:25):
me that you know that Jamie wouldprobably you know, not be able to
feed himself. You know that hemight have a thirty percent mobility chance of
even being able to feed himself, and walking wasn't in the you know,
the result of that. It wasjust what just even Eden, you know.
So, But the thing is thatwhen she told me that, you

(34:50):
know, I didn't actually really care. You know, it was like,
Okay, what what do you think? You know, where is the prognosis?
What do you think about Jamie? And but she said that, But
at that point it was just like, okay, But I knew that,
Okay, I'm used to you know, We're used to challenges, We're athletes,
and I knew that at this pointthis was going to be the biggest
challenge that I've ever had to faceand what was going to overcome, you

(35:13):
know. And that's why even whenI went in, when I got to
the whole hospital that day, thetears, they they literally stopped then,
you know, because at that pointwhen we got in, when I got
to the hospital, you know,I knew it was bad, but I
was prepared for the news, andI was prepared that it didn't matter what
happened, Jamie was going to bebetter. So after I heard this news

(35:34):
from the doctor. You know,he was in the ICU for about the
two weeks and then he got transferredto this other hospital, and you know
he was in a power chair. And you know, at this point,
you know, I was getting readyfor my third Olympics, but and I
was at the hospital every day,and Jamie's like, Shavan, you can

(35:54):
you have to go. You gotto go train because time is going by.
And I tried, and I triedto go out to the track,
but every time I got out tothe track, I I just would cry.
I could cry, and I justcouldn't you know, see myself going
off to the Olympics and being gonefor two months, you know, with
training camps and knowing Jamie would behere because I was just thinking about his

(36:17):
mental health and just you know what'sgoing through his head at this moment,
and I didn't want to leave himalone. So I tried to go to
track, but I couldn't. SoI decided that I wasn't going to go.
Eventually, you know, I alreadyhad a ticket that was going down,
you know, to Jamaica and everythingto race for my trials. But

(36:37):
I said, I said no,And it was like maybe the day before,
I said I can't do it.And at that point, you know,
I didn't know at that point, and this was the very first moment
in my life where I always havethese big dreams, you know, ever
since I was young, you know, make the Olympics and you know,

(36:58):
when a Grammy and doing all thosekind of things. But at this moment,
it was like nothing that I had, Like all the dreams, everything
was like who they It was notthere anymore because at this point, it's
like I have to be there forthis person. I have to be there
for this person that I love,Jamie, and I knew that. You

(37:19):
know, they were saying he's paralyzed, but it's like, no, he's
not. But I didn't know howlong it was going to take for him
to get back. I knew inmy heart that he would, but I
knew it was going to be along journey, and I was willing to
give everything up, you know, for that, you know, whatever it
is that you know, I knewhe had to choose, just like,
Okay, well we're gonna have todo whatever we have to do together.

(37:39):
It's like a whole nother team,right, Like you're used to being a
teammate running a relay. Yeah, and you were just going to be handing
the stick back and forth, helpingeach other out. Yeah. Yeah,
you know, it was me andJamie because my family's in New York.
Jamie's family, Jamie comes from aninteresting background and his mother actually did the
situation was really really bad. Shealready had mental issues, so this one

(38:04):
just took it over the edge.So he didn't have his family there.
So it was just Jamie and I, you know, together at this moment,
and you know, the athlete camein because you know, it's like
if you're going to get back, you know, we're doing everything that we
could for Jamie to get back, and you know, to even just to

(38:25):
the moment when he doesn't, eventhough he just stand up and even just
walk down to the car with hiswalker, because he was able to get
up and start. I remember thefirst day when he got a little tiny,
little twitch of movement and we knewthat just a little bit of movement
was enough. I mean it wasa little tiny movement too, but it
was like, you know, andyou know the time, you know,

(38:47):
as an athlete, we came in. I remember it's like, okay,
timed him. Okay, it tookforty five minutes for us to get to
the car, and it was onlymaybe fifty meters or maybe forty meters away
the car front door, if that. But it took forty five minutes,
and that forty five minutes went downto like seven minutes. But you know,

(39:07):
it was like the coach athlete.I was his coach then as well,
you know, came in to youknow, push him through this moment.
And yeah, so we don't wantto fast forward this story because this
story is amazing. So we're goingto take it literally, one step at
a time. This happened in twentysixteen. You guys decided you were getting

(39:30):
married in twenty seventeen, right, yes, and Jamie decided that, come
hot, hell or high water,I'm walking down the aisle to my lady.
Yes, So talk about that.So yeah, at the Okay,

(39:51):
so at the hospital when Jamie wasin the hospital, Jamie, you know,
Jamie asked me to marry him atthe hospital. But I think that
Jamie when he asked me at thehospital, he was he was really scared.
You know, he just saw everythingthat he had feel like lost it.
And so when he asked me.That's what I felt, you know,

(40:14):
I felt like, you know,no, I said, And at
that point, I said, youknow, don't. I don't want you
to think about that right now,you know what I mean. I just
want us to get through this.Let's let's get you back better. So
and so that's what I said, you know, in the hospital. And
then after being home a couple ofyou know, weeks, you know,

(40:36):
months or so, not too toolong, I you know, and to
Jamie, I was like, youknow what, we can start looking for
those rings. I start looking forthose rings, you know, and you
know, we we went out andyou know, Jamie was still lappy,
you know what I mean when hewhen he heard that, you know,
and you know, we went lookingfor the rings and you know, picked
a ring and and uh, youknow, Jamia, you know, he

(41:01):
proposed and you know, even justwhen he proposed, it was you know,
for him to put it on myfinger, it was really it was
so special because you know, hecan't really use his hands, you know
that well, so you know,he was trying to get it on my
finger. So it was just likeyou know, oh, you know,
and and he was trying to getit on and he did and he did

(41:23):
and he got He was just likea little buncher, but he did.
So it was just it was justso special. And and you know,
as he's you know, working out, and he's like, okay, you
know, I want to walk youdown the aisle. You know, he's
working out because we said we're goingto get married, you know, but
we didn't really actually pick a date. But then, you know, we
as athletes, we know we're goingto get ready for the Olympics, we're

(41:44):
gonna get ready for World championships orthis or that. We need a date.
So I figured I was like, you know what, you know,
baby, we need to get married. You should get We got to pick
a date. We're gonna get married. This because I knew that he needed
a date. Okay, so youso you can get rid. Eddy even
walked me down the aisle. Soand so he was he was working in,

(42:04):
he's training and April came and Iremember, Jamie hasn't taken any steps,
you know what I mean, Likethis is a year later, a
year from the accident last April,so and he hasn't taken any steps.
So I'm like, oh man,we're kind of getting close to July,
is he going to be able todo this? And I remember going into
the therapy center and I went inthat day and Jamie's just like, okay,

(42:29):
babe, look take your camera andwatch this, you know, And
and Jamie did like twelve little steps. He did twelve steps, and I
just remember from there, I waslike, what, man, did you
cry? I didn't cry. Iwas just I was just really happy,
you know what I mean. Iwas just like just like just like amaze
and just like wow, you knowwhat I mean. I was just like

(42:51):
just Wow, he's doing it.He was just like doing it, He's
taking steps. So I was justso just so happy for him. But
that's Jamie, you know what Imean. Jamie's just pretty amazing. And
I'm not sure if you've got achance to meet Michelle Jamie just during the
track, but everybody knows Jamie, and Jamie is the sweetest guy. You
love me. You know. WhenI met Jamie, I knew. I

(43:14):
was like, oh, he's differentfrom the rest. He's definitely different from
the rest. And you know, not to bash an him the rest.
If anybody's else was listening, youknow, if you are so sweet,
you're so sweet. But you know, yes, but uh, he he

(43:35):
did the steps you to twelve andthen off since twelve. The next time
he came like, you know, went to like twenty five, and then
all of a sudden, it's like, okay, I think it's gonna take
about one hundred and eight steps foryou to get from the you know,
to walt me down the aisle. So then now you've got you've given him
a date, and now you've givenhim. This is what we're going to
need you to win. Yeah, yeah, you're gonna need you to jump
this. They run fast. We'regonna need you to do it right,

(44:00):
Like, yeah, yeah, Ihave a feeling it was a little more
than a hundred steps, wasn't it. Right? Oh so when he did
that, So now when I cameback in and you know, whatever that
steps was that I told him todo, when we came back, he
was like, I did it,babe. And then I was like,
okay, so now it was justtwo fifty just a case like you know

(44:20):
what I mean. So I waslike okay, right, you know,
okay, you know, so Ijust kept moving just like how sports shoes
he does, right, you getbetter, and now you got to get
better and better and better. Butbut yeah, so I was that was
just amazing. You know, itwas amazing. And then the day came
and I'm like thinking about it now, like the day came, and you

(44:45):
know, it was it was funnybecause you know, obviously I sing,
right, so I didn't. Isang at our wedding. But I didn't
plan on singing at our wedding. You know, I didn't plan on it
because I just wanted this day.I didn't want to do anything. I
just want to be in this day. You know, I didn't want to
worry about singing or anything. Youknow, we had the la times there

(45:07):
associated press, like all these differentESPN, all these different news you know,
publications everybody they wanted to to say, hey can we come to your
wedding? You know, it's likeokay, it was like okay. So
but it was like two days beforethe wedding and I remember we haven't we
didn't pick a song yet to todance tune. And then I heard the

(45:35):
Celine Dion song. You know forall the times you know he stood by
me, you notice lead and seeon the song, and I uh and
I heard that and I was like, oh, this is a song.
I was like, I got tosing this song. You know this,
this is some words. I waslike, I gotta sing this song.
So I was like two days, two days away. It's like, okay,
well, I'm just gonna sing enoughfor me to get to the altar,
right, It's always like So Iwas like, okay, I got

(45:59):
I got to learn this song intwo days and and and and learn a
song and just be comfortable because I'mwalking down the aisle now. So you
know, And I didn't tell anyone. I didn't tell my family. Or
did you walk down the aisle singingit to him? Yes? Okay,
I said I sent. I sentthe video to you. Yes, yes,
I know, and I've watched it. I just I'm like trying to
remember. Okay, you probably thoughtit was Selene Dion, but it was

(46:21):
me. It was me, Buthe does have a song bird force.
Okay, So can we hear afew more bars of this? Oh no,
you're accent more. I'll shing alittle bit of my song happened?
Okay? Yeah, how about it? And you sing that That's what I'm
thinking of. You sing that comingdown the aisle with Jamie. Yes,

(46:44):
So, Celene Dion song. Youknow, you know that for all the
time you said by me, youknow that song. So I didn't tell
my friends or anybody. I toldthem that day when we're in the limo
getting ready, like, hey, guys, I'm going to sing to Jamie
down the aisle. And it waslike, oh, you know, And
I told her mom because she keptasking. I was like, no,
I wasn't. But when I heardthe song, I was like, oh,

(47:05):
I have to. So you know, I'm all strapped up. I
got mics underneath my dress and everything, and I'm like, okay, like
don't let anything happen, you know, like you know, walking down this
aisle and you know, I walkout and my mic is behind my flowers,
my bouquet, and I started singingthe song for Jamie. And it

(47:30):
was funny because Jamie's like, whenhe heard the song, he didn't know
that I was singing. He didn'tknow that I was singing, and he
heard it. And then when somebodymoved away and he heard he saw my
lips move, he was like,oh, wait a minute, she's singing,
you know what I mean? Andhe said he was like you know,
he was he was in tears andhe was like he had to hold
himself up because he almost fell. You know, he kind of hold himself

(47:52):
together. But you know, thatwas that was just a pretty amazing moment
just getting there. And I saidto him and and you know, just
looked in the face and it wasjust like we did it, you know,
we you know, we did it. And he did it because we
were hand in hand and he wason his feet when they said that he

(48:14):
wouldn't be They said he wouldn't walk, and here he is, you know,
we're getting married and he's on hisfeet. Like he did it.
He pushed himself to do that. You know, he pushed himself to do
and I always joke with him aboutthat because I'm like, I think I
need to, you know, becausehe's doing so so well. Now you
know, he's uh, you know, he he had the power chair to

(48:34):
the walker and then the four armcrutches after that, and he can walk
with a quad cane but not likean old man walking with a quad quaen.
Like he's still still gotta you know, get his vows a little bit
more dirty, but he can doit. And now you know that we
have the kids. He works withthe forum crutches because it just gives him
a little bit more stability now becausewe have the kids with us, but

(48:59):
you know, he's come so farfrom them saying that he'd be able to
be able to feed himself, youknow, So you know, and it's
just amazing just to see him workas hard as he as he does,
and just to see all of hisdreams still coming true to this very day

(49:20):
with his acting and everything and that, you know, and you know,
I'll share that with you, butit's just amazing, you know, to
see because when that happened, itwas just like you know, when anyone's
in such a horrible situation in theirlife, and we speak to a lot
of people that have had disabilities orbecause you never know, it could happen

(49:42):
to anyone. Because you guys havea foundation, yeah, helping others triumph,
and yes you do some speaking andyes, you know, when I
think about the game Cock divas, yeah, and I've worked with over the
years. Yes, Chavon was theMama Bear diva, even if she was
like a little king, very little, but she was always the Mama Bear.
So I'm not surprised that of allof you women and men, that

(50:07):
you're the one that was like,oh, yeah, we're doing this.
Yeah, of course, yeah, yeah, no, definitely, and it's
it's just pretty amazing. And Iknow you guys know, I know you
guys know about America's got talent andall that great stuff, and so I
want to share all that with you. Yeah, tell us a little bit

(50:29):
because like in addition to being theseelite athletes and now kind of overcoming this
challenge that you face together, Imean, you both are talented with music
and he has the acting. Sotell us a little bit more about kind
of what you're what you're doing todayand kind of your life together and on
that type of stage. Yes.No, So you know, with everything

(50:50):
that has occurred, you know, twenty sixteen, just with you know,
me not going to the Olympics andyou know, just you know, retiring
and you know, dedicating my lifeto be there for this person. I
didn't know what there was nothing aheadbut to be there. And it's to
me it still is just like wow, like I just everything was cut off

(51:14):
and that's so hard for a lotof people to even to do that these
days. But but I did,you know, we prayed and it was
just this is what we're gonna do. So fast forward, you know,
we get married and and I'm like, Jamie, you still because Jamie was
acting. He was, you know, on the latter part of his career,
and he had started doing acting whenhe was an athlete. And he

(51:37):
was writing on a sitcom for BentleyEvans, which you know produced a Martin
show, Jamie Foxx show, alot of shows in Hollywood. He was
starting to write for with them beforehis accident. But after the accident came,
was just like, no, yougot to still write. And even
when he couldn't use his hands,he used the voice you know, the

(51:57):
voice machine that wrote it out.And with Apple now you can just tap
and he and he figured it out. It's like you need to write,
write your book, right, youdid? And he did and and and
like in that the athlete, theamazing athlete that he is in Olympium,
he just even in the writer's room, he just completely rolls to the top,
you know. And that's just thekind of person that Jamie is.

(52:19):
And got himself back, you know. He uh was in the Netflix film
called Away starring Hillary Swank, whichit's funny because I'm actually in that TV
show as well. I'm making itknew about this one, the Oprah Yeah,

(52:42):
the Oprah's Own, But I knewabout that one, but I don't
think I knew about A Way Yeto go back and look at that away
the sci fi film starring starring HillarySwank and Josh Charles and and it's a
really great TV show on Netflix. And it was funny because in the show
they were looking for a love interestfor Jamie. So Jamie was like,
Hey, can you have my wifeauditioned for it? So I did and

(53:06):
I got it. You know,no one, I'm telling you, yeah,
way, because I'm sure I blowedout of the water. Yeah.
So so I make an appearance atthe end of that show and and that
was that was super cool. Andthen so from that and then America's Got

(53:30):
Talent came along. But before America'sGot Talent, I actually auditioned for another
role to play this character on thisTV show call in the Cut and that's
on Bounce TV. And I alsosent that to you, Michelle as well,
not to watch that. And Iplayed a role on that that was
really cool. So you get tocheck that one out. I had a
really good role on that that's onBounce and that that came out twenty twenty,

(53:54):
so I got my acting chops andso that was really fun for me.
And and and then America's Got Talentcame along and uh with the bells,
Got Talent came along. And howthat happened was we received an email.
Well first before the email came,UH, I got back into the

(54:15):
studio because Jamie was getting better andlike he was getting stronger, and every
time he worked out, I wouldalways come up with these songs while he's
working out, and I'm like,I got this song and the song sing
the song that you sang, I'mgonna I'm gonna say we gotta be patient,
patient, I was singing for you. Yes, So we wrote this

(54:37):
song. I wrote a song calledThrough the Good and the Bad aslong with
a lot of songs that really justthey just came about. They just came
on my spirit as we're going throughthis time and you know, like I'm
strong enough fight and and then ourwedding was coming up and actually us writing
this song through the Good and theBad, but I wasn't ready with it

(54:58):
yet. So until I I wasready, and then I came to Jim
Jamie, it was like I gotthis song that I wrote for you.
You know, I wrote it forhim and he was in tears and he's
like, you gotta go into thestudio. You gotta record the song.
So we found a producer, Irecorded the song. You know, we
got the video done, put thevideo out, and like two months later,
we got an email and from ourfoundation page from America's Got Talent and

(55:23):
it was like, hey, wejust saw your music video and we love
it. We'd like to know ifyou'd like to be on season fifteen America's
Got Talent. And I'm just readingit like like what does this say America's
Got Talent, you know, andJames like he's like I was like,
shuld do it. Jamie's like,uh yeah, you know what I mean,
Like of course, and they wantedme to be on season fifteen.

(55:46):
And I was just like, ohwow, you know, I couldn't believe
it. And Jamie's like, yeah, you gotta do the show. So
at this point, now, youknow, I go in, you know,
fast forward. I go in becausewe're going to do the show and
it's the day before the Los Angelesshut down for COVID. Okay, so

(56:07):
when I do my audition, theydidn't have an audience. They didn't have
an audience in the background because Heidihad got sick and they want they didn't
want anyone to be in there, you know what everything was going on.
And also at this time, Iam four months pregnant, four months pregnant

(56:27):
with Jasha at this time. Butwhen I do my audition, I wear
a really good dress. I weara really good dress, so you couldn't
even see my stomach. So whenI walked on, you know, I
started singing a Simon, Howie andSophia, and it was just an incredible
moment, you know, an experiencebecause just going through everything that we had

(56:52):
just been through, this being onthe show, to me, I felt
like it was just it was morethan just a singing contest. It was
just like with everything that we thatthat we went through, and just me
giving up on my dreams and everythingthat I ever thought I was going to
do, and now I'm here onAmerica's Got Talent singing you know what I
mean, as Simon and and andsinging a song that I wrote call Through

(57:15):
the Good and the Bad, that'sthe name of the song. It was
just an amazing, just an amazingexperience, you know, the the My
My, My show alone just withmy performance as over seventy two million views.

a little bit like as I clearmy throat, no no worms, but

(57:57):
through the good and the bad.All of them needed was you O hold
your hand and do anything I cando to give you all love me through
the good and the bad. Youknow a little bit like that. That

is that they're going through in life, for you to know that it's not
over no matter how difficult you know, a situation is a challenging situation may
be. And you know, alsojust know that always to lead with love.
You know a lot of times evenrelationship and today, you know,
