Speaker 1 (00:08):
Like the Beam, Like the Beam. Indeed, we have made
it to the Friday edition of the Sports Cave with
Biggest Puma once again. I am your host, Sam Freeze.
If you want to reach out to the program, you
can find me on x at Biggest Puma on Instagram
Biggest Dot Puma broadcasting live to tape once again. Here
on the east side of San Antonio, where you might
(00:30):
hear it in the background during the episode. My neighborhood
is being taken over by Yankees, a bunch of Billy
Joel fans, I guess, and maybe some Steam fans as well.
But expecting a big crowd at the Alamo Dome tonight.
Here in our backyard where we find ourselves thirty six
days till Texas travels to Kyle Field. A lot to
(00:53):
get to on the program today, obviously, gotta talk Spurs
maps from last night. You can guess by the roommate's
intro there. She will join us later in the program
for another edition of Who Won the Internet. If you
missed yesterday's episode, we did break down that Cowboys Niners
Sunday night football matchup. Talked a lot about the injury
(01:17):
issues both teams are facing and mentioned if we got
any updates we would mention them today. Well, we got
some updates and they were not good for the Cowboys.
It appears now both Micah and Deron Bland have both
been ruled out for the game Sunday night, and even worse,
Eric Kendricks and Kayln Carson are just questionable at best.
(01:41):
Really really could use Kendricks back in the middle of
that defense, considering they don't really have a natural replacement
outsides of a or outside of a special teamer or
a practice squad guy. And even though Kayln Carson is
just a rookie and a fifth round rookie at that,
it would be great to have him back, knowing now
(02:01):
that Deron Bland is going to miss as well. So again,
if you missed all that yesterday, we talked a lot
of Cowboys Niners as well as the rest of the
NFL weekend ahead. There's some good games on the schedule
on the docket. Our main segment today, of course, will
be some college football Week nine talk. Got a preview
some of the big games we have this weekend. This Saturday.
(02:25):
In college football, we have five ranked matchups, so it
should be a pretty good week on paper. And since
we haven't done one of these Friday episodes in a
couple weeks, got to jump back into some high school
football talk. Catch up on some of the local teams,
look at the top five in the area here. And
on top of all of that, the World Series starts
(02:46):
tonight as well, so we've got a lot to cover.
Let's jump right in. As always, we start with what
I watched last night. I would assume ninety percent of
y'all watched the same thing I did. That, of course,
was Spurs Opening night. They fall on the road up
in Dallas, end up losing that game one twenty to
one oh nine. It looked like the Spurs might have
(03:09):
had a chance to hang around and steal that one late,
especially with the way the MAVs were shooting in the
first half, But they get hot in the second half,
end up pulling away there in the third quarter, early
fourth quarter, to the point where both teams had cleared
their benches with about five minutes to go in the game.
I mentioned the MAVs getting hot. They were six for
(03:29):
twenty three on three pointers in the first half. I
think they were shooting under forty percent overall in that
first half. As well, they end up making thirteen of
twenty one in the second half to pull away. Big
problem with the Spurs first half was the turnovers. While
the MAVs were shooting so poorly, the Spurs weren't able
(03:50):
to open up any kind of lead because they were
turning the ball over themselves twelve turnovers in the first half,
only nineteen totals, so only seven in the second half.
But again, while the MAVs were clinking shots left and right,
the Spurs were getting a little careless with the basketball
and not taking advantage of that cold shooting from the
(04:12):
MAVs in the first half. And it wasn't just the
MAVs with cold shooting. I mean Wemby ends up only
with seventeen points on five of eighteen, shooting one for
eight from behind the arc. Did end up pulling down
nine rebounds, but he also accounted for four of the
spurs nineteen turnovers. As far as some positive notes did
(04:33):
see efficient nights from Champagne and so Hand, both with
eighteen points. Champagne four of eight from behind the three
point line and a nice baseline drive to get the
dunk as well. Again, thinking about this year, you know
we've got our questions. We've got our list of things
we want to see. One of those, if Champagne can
(04:56):
be a role player on a contender nights like last
night show, he might potentially be ready for that role
when it does come time. And speaking of things we
want to see, you know, I mentioned the real question
of is Jeremy Sohan the long term potential power forward
you want to pair next to Wimby. I mentioned the
(05:18):
eighteen points. It was an efficient eighteen points. He ends
up shooting six for eleven, one of two on threes,
but also has now gone back to the one handed
free throw style, so it's something to keep an eye on.
It feels like each night could be a different rhythm
for him at the line, which I'm not entirely sure
(05:38):
is what you want to see. You want to see
some consistency there, but it feels like he's still trying
to figure out which style is going to be more
comfortable for him, more productive. He also pulled down six
rebounds as well, and should mention Champagne had seven rebounds,
So good complimentary nights from so Hand and Champagne, But
(05:59):
on nights where Wimby goes one for eight on three
and shoots under thirty percent. That's going to be a
lot to ask the rest of this group to pick
up the slack. Speaking of some of the new guys
and picking up slack, Harrison Barnes got off to a
great start in his Spurs career. He started five for
five for the game, ended up shooting seven of ten,
(06:21):
so his efficiency kept up throughout the rest of the game.
He seventeen points on the night, Not so much for
CP three. He only goes one of six on shooting,
the one being a made three pointer. Did add eight
assists in seven rebounds. And then, lastly, the debut I
think people were most excited about. Stephan Castle gets his
(06:43):
first run in the NBA. He finishes with eight points,
five assists, three rebounds. So pretty quiet night overall for
the Spurs box score. And going up against the team
that represented the Western Conference last year in the NBA Finals,
it was going to take a lot more of that
to take them down, especially when Klay Thompson is out
(07:04):
there looking like the Klay Thompson up five years ago.
He ends up with twenty two points on really really
nice shooting numbers, six of ten on threes, and when
you're getting the wide open looks that he was getting
from Luca. From that MAVs offense, we could see Clay
turn the clock back quite a bit this year. But
(07:26):
it wasn't just the shooting. He end up also got
seven rebounds and really for most of the first half
he looked like the most active mav out there on
the court. Had a couple steals as well in the
first half. So great debut from Klay Thompson for MAVs fans.
In fact, it was such a great debut he ends
upsetting the MAVs record for most three pointers made in
(07:49):
their first game with the franchise. So Spurs take the loss.
Now return home for a back to back Saturday and
Monday night against the Rockets. I'm going to keep an
eye on this year with all of the new pieces
and the young guys looking to try to establish some roles.
Going to be really interested in the minute distribution and
(08:13):
the rotations that Pop is using. Just looking at the starters.
You know, Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, your two new veterans,
they play the most minutes of anybody, end up clocking
twenty nine minutes last night. Victor ends up at twenty
eight right behind him, and then this triumphant of Champagne
(08:33):
so hand both at twenty seven minutes each, and Kelton
Johnson off the bench right there at twenty five. So
there's your core six basically all within four minutes of
each other. When it comes to total playtime, Stephan Castle
being that next guy, that seventh man coming in at
eighteen minutes, which is exactly what I want to see.
(08:54):
I'd like to even potentially see Steph Castle creep closer
to that Kelton Johnson mid twenty's number when it comes
to playtime. But for his debut, for his first game
in the league, that's a pretty good start. I think
that's if you're looking at where he's going to eat
into minutes, I think he's going to potentially claw some
(09:15):
of those Keldon Johnson minutes away. So then we're seeing
him get more time with that starting unit next to
Wimby and start to develop some of that chemistry. Because
if we're looking at you know what's going to pay
off three years from now, it's not having Keldon play
as much of the six man role as it would
(09:35):
be Steph Castle. But again it's game one of his
career and pop knows more about basketball than I can
fath him in a fingernail, So take it for what
you will. Just looking at the rotations there, it was
Pop basically used a nine man rotation, so it was
those seven and then Trey Jones adds sixteen minutes off
(09:56):
the bench, Zach Collins fourteen minutes off the bench. And
again the NBA, the softest league, struck yet again. We
saw a flagrant foul on sohand for an offhand elbow,
off arm elbow onto Daniel Gafford for the MAVs, and
you know, watching it in real time, it looked like
(10:16):
a basketball play. Watching the replay, you see contact made
to Gafford's face and you pretty much immediately know, okay,
they're going to call that a flagrant, even though that's
exactly what you see in pickup games all across the
city every day, every afternoon, every night. But I guess
it is also opening night for those NBA officials as well.
(10:40):
But that's pretty textbook. Once I saw the replay, it
felt pretty clear what the call was going to be,
although I will say those officials last night seemed to
have some stretches of inconsistency. Let's call it that for
a while they were letting them play physical and really
swallowing the whistle. And then naturally, as the NBA games
(11:03):
EBB and flow, they started getting tiki taki in the
third quarter. Luca wasn't getting any calls in the first half.
All of a sudden, MAVs are getting to the free
throw line in the second half. So one game down.
Moving on to Houston now Saturday night. Hopefully the Spurs
can get that first win in the win column. I
(11:24):
wish y'all could hear it right now. It sounds like
a Vietnam in my neighborhood with helicopters flying really low,
it seems for this Billy Joel Sting concert. But elsewhere
in the league in the Association. Last night, Celtics end
up beating the Wizards in a snoozer. They win by twenty.
It's going to be really hard for Jason Tatum to
(11:46):
potentially win league MVP if he's not playing any fourth quarters.
And that again, I think he didn't play any in
the fourth quarter in the opener, didn't play any in
the fourth quarter last night as well. Thunder end up
handling the Nuggets in that second game of the doubleheader,
on T and T last night they win that by fifteen.
(12:09):
We did get our yearly installment of Chuck playing who
he played for. I think he got too correct this year,
if my memory serves me well. It was kind of
hazy last night by the time inside the NBA came on.
Shout out to the real hoops heads at the bar
last night that even after the Spurs disappointing loss, hung
(12:32):
around to talk some basketball and watch that Nuggets Thunder
game last night. And then lastly in the association, I
know the game that all of y'all were locked into.
The Kings were not able to light the beam for
the first time last night, light the beam for the
first time this year. They fall to the Tea Wolves
(12:53):
ended up losing that game by two. Minnesota gets their
first win of the season and with that, now every
NBA team has played a game finally this year. I
don't like the teams having to weigh It wasn't fun
watching the rest of the league get to play while
we waited for Thursday night. But finally we have seen
(13:14):
every team in action, and we have another league pass
quad box ahead of us tonight, as if World Series
Baseball or spare college football wasn't enough, or hell NHL
for that matter, where I should mention the Stars also
got a win last night. They end up beating the
Bruins five to two. They started the year four and
(13:36):
zero had dropped two of their last three, so it's
good to see them back in the win. Call them
I mentioned spare college football. Also last night, we did
have some football. Before we talk about the embarrassing play
of Syracuse's Kyle McCord, should start with the actual Thursday
night football NFL game we saw last night where Minnesota
(13:57):
was not able to stop their losing street. It is
now at two games after being undefeated to start the year.
They fall to the Rams thirty to twenty, and really
it was a lot of the old Rams that we've seen,
which magically can happen when you get your weapons back healthy.
That's exactly what happened last night. After flirting with potentially
(14:22):
trying to trade Cooper Cup midweek to the Chiefs, he
makes his season debut. He comes back as well as
Puka Nakua, and all of a sudden, Matt Stafford looks
like a good quarterback again. It's crazy how that happened.
Stafford throws four touchdowns last night, and I think what
a lot of people are talking about today is the
(14:43):
way that game finished. As we were watching that thunder
Nuggets game last night out in public, the other TV
within eyesight had the Thursday night game on, and so
instantly as soon as I heard the reaction, had to
peep over and see what the commotion was about. And
of course it was clearly a face mask by Byron
(15:05):
Young on that final play, or not final play, but
on that sack with a minute and a half left
in the game, which in turn put it completely out
of reach for the Vikings. Now were they going to
drive ninety six yards ninety four yards with a minute
and a half left in the game. The odds were low,
(15:26):
but you hate to see a game completely mathematically basically
end with as bad of a call as that was.
And it does lead me to question, you know how
long before actual calls like that are reviewable? I mean,
baseball does it when it's a tag at a base
on a you know, a guy trying to stretch a
(15:48):
single to a double, or trying to steal a bag
or whatnot. I mean, it's I know it's not a penalty,
but it is a review telling the official, hey, you
made a bad call on the field. We have video
evidence that proves how bad a call that was. Why
can't we review that? Why can't we overturn that? It
(16:09):
feels just like with all the technology we have available
to us, the only thing standing in the way is
the pride of officials not wanting to be corrected, not
confident that the Vikings were going to drive down because
they also would have needed a two point conversion. Even
then if they score a touchdown to tie that, but
I hate to see that opportunity taken away from them
(16:30):
with such an egregious call. It feels like, at minimal
maybe within the last two minutes of each half, that's
something the league review or League Replay center could buzz
down to an on field official and say, hey, you
missed a very easy to identify face masking call there.
(16:51):
Let's take that safety off the board, give them the
penalty and go forward. But Vikings end up losing, and
the bigger loss really came to day when they got
news that they're starting left tackle their absolute stud Christian Darsaw,
he's going to be gone for the rest of the year.
He's got acl MCL injury huge blow for that offense,
(17:12):
a huge blow for Sam Darnold and his blind side,
as he's had such a great start to the year.
We'll see, now facing a little bit of adversity, what
direction this Viking season turns, because, as we've talked about
all year, that NFC North is an absolute gauntlet and
there is every bit of realistic chance that they end
(17:36):
up finishing last in that division. Now, granted, I think
Chicago is still the worst of those four teams, but
you never know how the NFL season could turn on
a dime, and losing your left tackle is a massive,
massive blow. I mentioned in college football Kyle McCord's terrible
night with Syracuse. He throws five interceptions, three of them
(18:00):
you pick sixes in the first half of that game.
That would have been all the points that Pitt needed
to stay undefeated. They end up winning overall forty one thirteen. Again,
Syracuse couldn't get anytime, they got something going. Kyle McCord
through the ball to the other team and Pitt now
seven and oh for the first time since nineteen eighty two.
(18:24):
Some of y'all that were alive back then would be
very quick to remember that that was Dan Marino's senior
year at pitt before going in the first round in
the nineteen eighty three draft. So a lot of college
football still to get to in our main segment. But
before we jump there, I have to mention I was
(18:46):
trying to get this thing recorded before the start of
the World Series Game one tonight, going a little later
than anticipated, sitting here now as we're closing in on
first pitch, but wouldn't be able to live with myself
if I didn't throw some World Series nuggets out there
on today's episode. Game one from LA getting ready to start. Obviously,
(19:10):
we'll talk a lot about what happens on Monday's episode,
but just a few overarching thoughts real quick here, and
I think the first of which is we got the
best matchup very very very rarely in baseball these days,
with the amount of wild card teams, just with the
(19:30):
amount of you know, relief pitching specialists that are able
to completely shut down certain lineups, very rarely do we
get the old school, best of the best World Series matchup,
and that is exactly what we get this year. Obviously,
the history of Dodgers Yankees, I don't think many people
(19:53):
need a history lesson on that. But as far as
these two teams as currently constructed, thought is, if you're
a Dodgers fan, you're happy with the fact that Freddie
Freeman has gotten a week of rest. They're going to
have to rely on him. They've gotten this far with
him being in and out of the lineup. I don't
(20:14):
think you can have a game where he misses in
this series and just completely completely lose that production in
the lineup going up against this Yankees team that has
the clear pitching advantage, well, I should say the overall
pitching advantage, because we already know basically the Dodgers are
going to throw another bullpen game in Game four. The
(20:38):
Yankees have four starters that they can confidently go to
that they've been able to rely on throughout this run.
So far. We know the Dodgers are only relying on
three starting pitchers, and it's worked for him so far.
And I don't think you can say, you know, it's
been they've gotten lucky with their or going up against
(21:01):
teams that you know, maybe had gotten the upset and
shouldn't be there in Round two. But you just look
at the teams both of them went through. The Dodgers
went through the Padres, and then the Mets, the you
know Mets with the highest payroll, the Padres the divisional rival. Meanwhile,
the Yankees only saw the Royals and the Guardians because
(21:25):
the Royals end up opening the playoffs with the upset
of the Orioles, so the Yankees didn't have to see
their division rival, the Orioles didn't have to see the
Astros because of the Astros loss to Detroit, and then
get a Guardians team where you would have thought the
Guardians advantage there would have been the lights out bullpen,
(21:46):
but the Yankees end up getting to Class A multiple
games in the ALCS. So I think, you know, on paper,
just give me seven games. I'm not really sure I
have a lean. I think if you had to force
me to make a pick, I would just lean Yankees
because of their advantage in the starting pitching. And also,
(22:09):
I think if you look, maybe I saw this stat earlier,
if you look at some areas where there are strengths
versus weaknesses, you know, the Dodgers have had trouble striking
anybody out this postseason. They have one of the worst
strikeout rates as a team of any postseason team so
(22:29):
far this year. Meanwhile, the Yankees have the lowest chase
rate of the entire Playoffs. Their chase percentage is only
twenty three percent, so meaning one out of every four
pitch that is out of the strike zone they're swinging
at the other three they're watching it go by taking
their walks and letting the big hitters in the lineup
(22:49):
do all the damage. And if the Dodgers can't get
any swing and misses from the back and from the
bottom end of this Yankees lineup, I'm worried that top
end star power of Sodo Stanton and maybe a awakening
Aaron Judge I could be enough to push the Yankees
over the top. But again, just give me seven games
(23:11):
of it. I'm not ready for baseball to be over.
I certainly not when I'm staring at hopefully seven games
of this specific matchup of Dodgers Yankees. I got what
I wanted matchup wise. Now I'm just crossing my fingers
and hoping this is not an anti climactic gentleman sweep
(23:31):
or anything like that. I mentioned it earlier this week.
These TV rating numbers are going to be insane. I
think the most viewed game from last year's World series,
of course, Texas Rangers, Red Shoe Rangers, Diamondbacks. It was
the lowest rated World Series ever on record, and I
(23:52):
think the most viewers they had during any game was
like eleven million as the Rangers were rapping at things
up there out in Arizona. So this one should do
absolutely ridiculous numbers. It's not gonna do you know, nineteen
eighty one numbers where I think I saw it was
like forty three million people watched at the peak of
(24:16):
that World Series back then when it was Dodgers Yankees
in eighty one. But should be absolutely ridiculous numbers. Can't
wait to see what those ratings are going to be.
I can't wait to finish this pod so I can
run into the other room and watch that game. But
in order to do that, we've got to get to
our main segment. Let's talk some college football where the
(24:38):
LSU Tigers, led by Boston born and raised proper Catholic
boy Brian Kelly, again Northeastern Boston kid Brian Kelly leads
the LSU Tigers up against the other undefeated team in
the SEC. Your Texas A and M fight, nag, thank you,
(25:02):
thank you.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
Well, that's a great way to get started, and I
haven't even won all.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
My games yet.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
It's a great guy to be a Tiger.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
I'm here with my family and we are so excited.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
To be in the great state of Louisiana, but more
importantly to be with you great fans and to be
part of what is going to be an incredible ride
here at Louisiana State University.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
Man, I hadn't heard that clip in a while. It's
even more ridiculous than I remember me and my family
here in Louisiana, Louisiana State University. That man was born
in Boston, coached in the Midwest for decades, and all
of a sudden, twenty four hours in the South. He
(26:00):
sounds like he doesn't even sound like my grant. He
sounds like a caricature of my family reunions again, which
I take great offense to Brian Kelly appropriating my heritage
in that way. And I hope to hell the fight
and Aggies take it out. You're not gonna hear me
say this too often. But now that Texas and Texas,
(26:21):
A and M are back playing each other again here
in thirty six days, I want A and M to
win every game. Till then, because I want that game
to be as big of an event nationally as it
should be. I mean, obviously all of us here are
going to enjoy the hell out of it. But if
both of those teams are top ten or god maybe
(26:43):
even top five, just imagine the not only conference ramifications,
but just how much hype that game could have if
A and M and Texas keep doing their part. But
as far as the matchup with LSU, it's going to
take a lot to be that LSU team. They're starting
to find forms starting to look really, really dangerous. I mentioned,
(27:07):
you know, A and M and LSU the last two
conference undefeated teams in the SEC. Five rinked matchups across
college football this week. Three of them are SEC games,
this one being the best with the top two teams
at the top of the rankings. And then you add in,
on top of everything else, it's a night game at
(27:29):
Kyle Field. This is potentially shaping up to be a
really really nice closer to the night or if you're
a real sicko standing up late for those nine to
thirty ten PM kickoffs, this could be your main course
before you get that late night dessert. I flash back
and think you know, A and M and LSU have
(27:51):
played in some absolute historic battles since LSU or since
A and M has entered the SEC. You know, obviously
it's the two teams that led to the reason we
have overtime the way we have it now where it
becomes two point conversions after double overtime, because these two
teams end at what was it like seven or nine
(28:14):
overtimes and they went back and forth that game that
got up into the seventies a few years ago. Hopefully
we see another classic like that with A and M
coming out on top elsewhere in the SEC. Number five
Texas going oh, I should mention LSU number eight, A
and M number fourteen, but an M is the one
(28:34):
and a half point favorite playing that night game at home.
Number five Texas on the road and now one of
the toughest SEC environments Nashville, Tennessee. They taken now ranked
number twenty five Vanderbilt Texas of course, looking to get
back on track after the loss to Georgia at home
(28:55):
last week. I think, you know, seeing Van Dey beat
Bama is all the motivation, all of the awareness you
need to have to know what can happen to you
if you go in and don't take that game as
serious as you should. Of course, Vandy already ripping down
the goalpost once this year when they knocked off number
(29:16):
one at the time, Alabama would think that Sark has
the guy's focus and locked in for this one again
with the bad taste of that Georgia game still in
their mouths traveling now on the road to a place
where Nick Saban once said was the only easy environment
you faced in the SEC. Hopefully Texas doesn't drink that
(29:40):
same kool aid. But speaking of Saban, speaking of Bama,
they are the other ranked SEC matchup this week. They
host number twenty one Missouri and that Bama team, again
still trying to figure things out under Kelln de boor
now already two losses by the end of October for
(30:01):
the first time since Saban's debut year at Bamabama, sliding
down all the way to number fifteen in the rankings.
I think that matchup is a good indication of which
team is not ready to give up on their season yet,
because now with the twelve team playoff and with the
carnage that could still play out at the top of
(30:21):
the conference standings, you never know, we might end up
seeing a three loss Power five school make it into
that twelve team playoff, so a real kind of I
think loser is completely out of it. Winner still has
an outside chance. And then the other two rank matchups
this week, Number twenty Illinois traveling to face the number
(30:43):
one team in the country, Oregon, a good conference test
again Oregon and Illinois being a conference game. I swear
I'll stop saying it, but that is unstable in my brain.
Still Oregon now freshly perched atop the standings after Texas
loses last week, will Oregon face any adversity. I think
(31:04):
Illinois is a team that absolutely could dent that record,
but traveling out to Ottson Stadium is always a tall task,
especially for a team that's doing it for the first
time as a conference opponent. And then the ranked matchup
that I know everybody had circled on their calendar when
(31:24):
schedules were released this last summer, Number twelve Notre Dame
traveling to play undefeated and number twenty four ranked Navy,
the boys from Annapolis at the Naval Academy looking for
really a signature win to go with that undefeated record,
and it's not a cheap undefeated record. I mean they
(31:47):
are pinning fifty on conference opponents. They are blowing the
doors off of Group of five schools. But this Notre
Dame team will absolutely be the best team they've faced
all year. Hopefully the Navy magic can keep going. I
want to see an undefeated Army take on an undefeated
(32:07):
Navy in the American Athletic Conference game and then have
to turn around and play each other again in the
Army Navy game, because if they both make it to
the conference championship game, that will be their official matchup.
Winner of that would end up basically default making the playoff,
but they would still turn around and play their actual
(32:31):
Army Navy game at neutral site like they always do.
So I'm rooting for Chaos and I always root against
Notre Dame. So hopefully, especially for my childhood buddy Gator,
who is an Annapolis grad. We called him Gator. He
was from Michigan and he moved to Texas. Like none
(32:52):
of it made sense, We just rolled with it. He
was Gator, So do it for Gator boys, go Navy. Also,
my grandpa was a Navy, so I guess also for
my grandpa, my namesake, I should say a couple of
the other matchups I've got circled on my calendar for tomorrow.
The rest of the undefeated teams got to keep an
(33:12):
eye on them. Obviously still undefeated, but leaving me with
a lot of questions. Number three Penn State on the road.
They travel to Madison take on a resurgent Wisconsin team
that will be hopefully an interesting game, a good test
to see exactly how good of that Penn State team is. Man,
(33:33):
what has happened to Florida State? Just an absolute polar
opposite of last year's undefeated regular season. They are an
absolute mess, but a win at Miami would sure make
things fill a whole lot better. In Tallahassee, Florida State
traveling to take on number six Miami, a Miami team
(33:54):
that continues to survive with the benefit of the ACC
replay and ACC officiating. I would think that game against
Florida State is not close enough that they need to
be bailed out by the conference replay unit once again
this season, but you never know with that rivalry. And
(34:16):
then surprisingly BYU still undefeated. Number eleven BYU, they travel
all the way across the country for a conference game,
they travel from Utah to Central Florida, taking on UCF,
a UCF team that came really damn close last week
to knocking Iowa State from the list of undefeated. They're
(34:38):
looking to bounce back. I think it's probably been a
pretty hard week of coaching for UCF after they were
so close to winning last week, and now they're turning
around playing another undefeated team. Got to get back up
for the moment after the crushing loss last week. They
blow that game late up in aimes and now hosting
(34:59):
b One, a BYU team that had their own come
from behind win last week to stay undefeated. And then
lastly among the group of undefeateds this week, a classic
Big Ten matchup as Washington Huskies travel to take on
undefeated number thirteen Indiana. Everything seems wrong with what I
(35:22):
just said, but the Hoosiers are undefeated. I think game
day is actually there. I think that's the location I
saw Corso back there. He used to coach in Indiana.
Protect Corso at all costs. That Washington team, obviously disappointing
season after playing it for a national championship last year,
now just middle of the road in the new newly
(35:44):
redesigned Big Ten. But how about Indiana. I mean to
be undefeated this deep into the season is unheard of
for them Again, I go back to it. For the
first year of a twelve team playoff. All signs are
pointing to absolute chaos come selection week, and I for
(36:04):
one route for that. So give me Indiana to stay undefeated.
Please create chaos at the top of the college football hierarchy.
We need some new blood in there. We need to
see teams that historically in my lifetime have never come
close to sniffing a national championship. Give me some walky
matchups in round one of this new twelve team playoff.
(36:28):
And then, lastly, for the college football portion here one
team I was hoping would cause some chaos in this
new playoff era. Unfortunately, things haven't quite turned out that way.
UTSA now just trying to get back to five hundred.
They're sitting at three and four now after recovering from
(36:48):
the loss at Rice. They win last week at homecoming
against Florida Atlantic, and now leave our fair Burgh once
again traveling on the road playing a two and five
toll team up in Oklahoma that hopefully is a pathway
for UTSA to string a couple wins together here and
get back on track. Still a long shot possibility of
(37:12):
sneaking into a conference championship game, but it would take
a lot to the point where they just let's string
some wins together and we'll worry about how the chips
fall in six weeks here. So yeah, on paper, again,
another great week at college football. No real prime in
top ten matchups, per se, but the SEC there should
(37:34):
be a lot decided in terms of conference standings with
those three ranked matchups, and you never know. We mean,
Oregon could get blown out by Illinois. That's the beauty
of college football. Not predicting that. Don't think it's going
to happen, but give me chaos. I root for chaos
when it comes to college football. Real quickly before I
(37:55):
get the roommate in here for some who won the Internet,
I want to jump back in on Fridays to give
some love to some of our local high school football teams,
because there's some really really good football being played in
our backyard here this year. Some really good teams, some
state ranked teams, some teams that have real potential to
(38:17):
make deep runs, which would be great to see coming
out of our region. Forgive me because I'm so uncomfortable
saying these are my rankings. These are my top five teams,
but these are my top five teams for the area
right now. I still have Sybelo Steel number one. You
know that loss to Westlake I think is only going
(38:38):
to look better and better as the season goes on.
They take on winless San Marcus this week, still coming
off a bye week last week and two weeks ago
blew the doors off poor Judson fifty six to three.
Coming in number two, a really really good Piper Warriors team.
They play at MacArthur, Struggling MacArthur one in six. That
(39:00):
Piper team beat New Bronfles forty nine to thirty five
last week. Should mention Piper undefeated. Also undefeated who I
have as third the Alamo Heights Mules. They're playing McCollum
two and five. McCollum team shouldn't be a team that
Alamo Heights overlooks as they try to keep that perfect
(39:21):
record intact. They beat Veterans Memorial last week in a
tough matchup thirty seven to twenty six. Checking in at fourth,
got the one loss Brennan Bears. They take on Stevens
this week Brinnan coming off in absolute demolishing of Holmes
last week. You never like to see scores like this
in high school seventy two to seven and then coming
(39:44):
in fifth. Got to still give love to my rural
badasses that is the undefeated both Pirates they take on
Natalia one in six Natalia team, both coming off a
win over a big win over Stockdale last week fifty five.
I'm even gonna give you some honorable mentions this week
because I think I might be going to this game
(40:07):
next week. Undefeated Southwest they won last night against win
team out of Eagle Pass and Jay who won last
night against Martin Southwest versus Jay. Next week is going
to be a battle of undefeated teams, and I think
I might just find a way to get my body
(40:27):
there if I am able. And then also should mention
God good love to some of the private school kids.
Holy Cross undefeated eight and oh looking at the rest
of their schedule, that should be a ten to oer
regular season for them. Still love me some high school football.
Still love watching I mean, hell, I'll probably end up
watching well I won't probably I will end up watching
(40:49):
Craig Way and the rest of that crew recap all
the action across our great state should also say that
is my iHeart. Coworker Craig Way doing the show over
in Austin with iHeart. Now. Of course, Craig will have
to wait till after this World Series Game one, and
Game one has already waited long enough to have my
(41:12):
eyes viewing it. So without further ado, let's wrap things
up with another edition of Who Won the Internet featuring
none other than the Roommate. Oh perfect timing as the
Huies from nom are flying back overhead for the Billy
Joel concert. Hello Roommate, Hello, roommate.
Speaker 3 (41:31):
Hello.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
I still feel like we need an intro song for this.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
Oh yeah, we definitely do.
Speaker 1 (41:36):
Yeah, we'll keep working on that. But for people that
don't remember, the roommate joins me when she can, when
her work schedule allows it, she joins us for a
segment we like to call Who Won the Internet. The roommate,
of course, is just my wife, Steph. Hello, there it
is she we like to call. You know. Each week
(41:59):
we sit back and we compare each other's Internet feeds
from the last five days, from the last seven days,
just to see how different they are, especially considering we're
active on very very different platforms. I live most of
my life on X. You live most of your life
on Instagram, and I am not on TikTok at all.
(42:23):
So when something goes trendy, viral, whatnot on TikTok, I'm
completely in the dark.
Speaker 3 (42:29):
Yeah, unless it crosses your X feed, that's true.
Speaker 1 (42:31):
Unless, yeah, unless bum chill Ups starts putting out a
TikTok feed or a TikTok thread and it catches me there.
But yeah, again, I'm seeing TikTok's on X. I feel
in this way, I feel like I am the old
man in the room being educated on what actually is
happening out there in the rest of the world, in
(42:52):
outside of my sports obsessed bubble. But I mention you're
able to join when your schedule allows it. Tell the
people where all have you been the last fourteen days?
Speaker 3 (43:06):
I have been a traveler of states.
Speaker 4 (43:09):
I was in Phoenix, and then most recently I was
in San Diego and very happy to be back in
San Antono.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
Well, I know, one of those destinations sounds a whole
lot more appealing than the other.
Speaker 3 (43:22):
They were both beautiful.
Speaker 1 (43:24):
Oh no, I mean, well, which one do you think
I'm talking. I'm talking about Phoenix. You can go out
there and see the Rangers spring training facilities and surprise,
get your spot ready, start booking your hotels for pictures
and catchers reporting.
Speaker 4 (43:37):
Oh no, we saw the sunset over sailboats in San
Diego in beautiful San Diego weather.
Speaker 3 (43:43):
So it's kind of hard to top that sometimes.
Speaker 1 (43:45):
Yeah, I'm sure you were pinky out drinking your rose
on the.
Speaker 3 (43:51):
Bubbles.
Speaker 1 (43:51):
Okay, it was just bubbles. You classed it up a
little bit, I guess, or classed it down. I should say, well,
what do you have for me today? Because it is
a pleasure to always have you join us. I'm glad
we're able to get this back up and running this week.
What do you bring to the table?
Speaker 3 (44:09):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (44:10):
So I wasn't on the internet as much as I
usually I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker 3 (44:13):
With the trip.
Speaker 1 (44:14):
Well that's a good start. No, but so completely shoot
the wheels off your credibility. Okay, yeah, now go ahead.
Speaker 4 (44:19):
No, So the things that did hit I feel like
hit harder. I thought it was really adorable when the
paragliders saw the dog on the top of the pyramid.
Speaker 1 (44:30):
Oh yes, okay, that one actually, that one did hit
my timeline. What was it? It was one of the
great pyramids of Giza, right.
Speaker 4 (44:38):
Yes, yeah, And I mean that little guy had to
climb all the way up there, Like think if that's
so many steps and you just let, you know, keep going, like.
Speaker 1 (44:45):
Makes me wonder what the I mean?
Speaker 5 (44:48):
Was it?
Speaker 1 (44:48):
Literally like he saw one bird and so he just
started climbing. The bird kept going higher and higher, and
eventually he's at the top.
Speaker 3 (44:56):
You know, we'll never know.
Speaker 4 (44:57):
That's kind of what like, it's just amazing. And the
fact that the guy saw him as he was flying
by makes it just I don't know, just nature's a
pretty cool thing.
Speaker 3 (45:04):
Like it's gonna go on without us one day.
Speaker 1 (45:06):
Well, that's for damn sure. It does make me wonder
about the security levels there, because I would think they
don't want people climbing up the side of a pyramid.
But somehow a dog slides by security and makes it
all the way to the top.
Speaker 3 (45:22):
Well, what are you gonna run up and catch him?
Speaker 1 (45:23):
Well, I guess that would mean then you're a human
climbing a pyramid, So you just let the dog do
what it's gonna do. Hopefully the dog didn't do oh Yeah,
like one I have for you, because here in our
own backyard up at sea World, we had a bit
of a nasty situation. First of all, if you're sitting
(45:47):
in the splash zone at sea World, you kind of
have it comeing to you. I mean, you're intentionally going
there to get splashed by tank water that's not exactly
sanitary to with.
Speaker 4 (46:00):
Yeah, you want an immersive experience if you're sitting that close.
Speaker 1 (46:03):
Well, I think that's the best way to phrase it.
There was we had an immersive experience at SeaWorld earlier
this week where right as they go for the choreographed
will splashing the crowd in the splash zone there, Uh,
that will led out everything they had just eaten at
Takoia data Point and proceeded to splash all of that
(46:26):
pooh water all over the unsuspecting crowd that was there.
I mean just imagine, I want to know what time
of day it was.
Speaker 3 (46:34):
Well, did you see it?
Speaker 4 (46:35):
Like there was the kid looked literally looked back at
his mom in horror.
Speaker 1 (46:39):
Oh, devastation.
Speaker 3 (46:40):
It was like, save me, because even.
Speaker 1 (46:44):
A kid saw what happened right before and realized it's
going to happen, that's about to have. That's about to
hit me.
Speaker 4 (46:51):
Yeah, it makes me think of that stadium, right, wasn't
it a stadium where the pipe first? Oh?
Speaker 3 (46:57):
Yes, yes, something you don't want to be covered in.
Speaker 1 (47:01):
That was the That was the one of the final
chapters of the Dan Snyder ownership of the then Washington Redskin.
They might have been Commanders by then, but yeah, that
was when literally the team was awful. The owner despised
everyone in the organization, the organization and fans despised him.
And then as a final nail in the coffin, the
(47:23):
stadium started dumping crap water on in the fans. I
think that was the first week of the season a
couple of years ago. Good recall, how.
Speaker 5 (47:32):
Is that what sticks of all the sports sports, of
all of the sports fun facts I give you you
remember the fact that Commanders fans got crapwater dumped on them.
Speaker 1 (47:44):
That's amazing. I'm very very proud.
Speaker 4 (47:46):
I also, like kind of wholeheartedly believe that workad did
it on purpose.
Speaker 1 (47:52):
Oh, I think there's a I think there's more than
a sliver of truth potentially there. Getting smart well, especially
if you follow our European ORCA brotherhood. They take down
yachts weekly.
Speaker 4 (48:08):
And who knows how far they can talk to each other.
They're like, man, we can take them down if we
just collect.
Speaker 1 (48:12):
I don't know, No, I think you're on I think
you do know. I think you're absolutely onto something here.
Speaker 3 (48:17):
Birds aren't real.
Speaker 1 (48:18):
Well we all know that. I mean hell, even the
militaries showing it in their recruitment propaganda videos. Now in
the commercials, we're seeing birds turn into military controlled drone
something we all knew for ages was the truth. But
that's a different conspiracy podcast. What else you got for me?
Speaker 4 (48:37):
The other one I have actually takes back to the
intro when you were talking about the trends on TikTok.
There was one this week that kind of hit me
well because it's something that I think is really funny.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
Yeah, you're already giggling, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (48:50):
Because there's so many good ones, but it's the subtle
foreshadowing trend.
Speaker 1 (48:54):
To like m educate me. That one did not cross over.
Speaker 4 (48:58):
Yeah, so it is is videos of some kind of failure.
You could be falling a cat like I don't know,
there are a million different things, but it just shows
the worst part of the video and like a quick
like boom and it just says subtle foreshadowing, and then
it proceeds to essentially show you what happens leading up
to that catastrophic moment, whatever it may be.
Speaker 1 (49:19):
So it's basically like in Fight Club where he splices
in the dong in the movie reel, and so it
flashes up there and everyone's like, wait, did everybody just
see that? Well, yeah, yeah, that is that's okay, all right,
all right, I think I'm following up.
Speaker 4 (49:33):
Yeah, So it'll show like the like one of them
this this poor woman goes like falls backwards over a log,
and it just shows like her like sprawled over the log,
and then it clips back and it shows the rest
of the video and she tries to jump from shore,
and then that's like the catastrophic moment that it shows
you at the beginning.
Speaker 1 (49:51):
Okay, I think I completely understand why you loved this
trend because it was probably just a lot of people
falling down.
Speaker 3 (49:58):
Those are a lot of the ones that I check.
Speaker 1 (50:02):
No Way, the Roommate is still a weekly viewer of
America's Funniest videos.
Speaker 3 (50:07):
I mean, show me a better compilation.
Speaker 1 (50:09):
I can't. That's why I sit there and watch it
with you and laugh my ass off most of the time.
Speaker 4 (50:14):
Yeah, I do love a good quote fail video, I
guess now, But yeah, it did originate from just America's
why it's somebody.
Speaker 1 (50:22):
Well, I do like, I do like the creativity at
least of combining Fight Club with America's funniest home videos.
That's at least a new way to show people falling down.
We're still finding ways to get creative with that never
ending innovation when it comes to watching people fall down.
(50:45):
That's at least some gives me some hope there.
Speaker 4 (50:48):
Yeah, no, it's just TikTok. Trends are going to keep
pushing innovation, I think. And it's fun because I'm in
it and I see it and yeah.
Speaker 1 (50:56):
Well that's why I need we need you on that
wall for sports obsessed fellows like myself that don't spend
a lot of time doom scrolling TikTok. Although some of
the funniest things my friend group text have ever sent
me are random like college football tiktoks.
Speaker 4 (51:17):
Do you know how much different those are than what
hits my feed? I cannot imagine how different like your
friends feeds are than mine.
Speaker 1 (51:23):
Yeah, I would love to see you and Roach compare
TikTok feeds that would be funny. Well, I will close
it out again, mentioning the sports obsessed fellaw that like
I am, I know, you had to see the ut
kid that looked exactly like Conway Twitty. Yeah, not Kanye
(51:45):
Twitty as I accidentally called him earlier this week. And
then I had the thought of, I mean, you know,
Granny Donna. Imagine Granny Donna listening to a mashup of
Kanye and Conway Twitty, her favorite artist of all time.
Speaker 4 (51:58):
You know, it could either go I mean, man, I
could see her loving it, or it would just be
an immediately.
Speaker 1 (52:03):
I bet Black Skinhead would be on repeat. Probably she
would just love that. Yeah. Or you know, maybe you
know a little Kanye and Kim on the motorcycle, maybe
some bound too. I bet she would just jam out
to that.
Speaker 3 (52:18):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1 (52:19):
No, of course, the kid that went viral during the
Texas defeat to Georgia. Well, like good journalists will do,
they get right to work tracking down answers to the
most pressing stories we have here in our country. As
we are less than two weeks away early voting is starting,
(52:39):
there's so much important action that could be covered but
we had to go get an interview with the twenty
year old sophomore who went viral at the football game,
and it turns out he is I mentioned he is
a twenty year old sophomore government major, which of course
(53:00):
he checks out. He's a kid that wants to eventually
get into the political realm. It seems like his name
is Grant Walter, again, a very very ut name. Sounds
like he has to be a legacy. He gave an
interview with WFAA out of the Metroplex and I'm not
(53:21):
going to read you the whole thing. It's worth it
if you find it. Cave put it up earlier this week.
That was where I saw it. But his quotes in
this thing, it's why we do this segment, literally the
who Won the Internet? The way he describes the process
of realizing that he had become a meme.
Speaker 4 (53:42):
Oh, there were people like behind videoing, so there's like
video of him like seeing it.
Speaker 1 (53:47):
Sort of scrolling and realize he's so he's getting blasted
by his high school, his Spanish class, you know, group text.
He's starting to look around and really like why is
everyone on their phones and looking and why am I
being like why are people recording me? Specifically? All of
that gives me so much anxiety, just thinking about what
(54:08):
like being a becoming a meme not realizing it yet,
but everyone around you is already reacting to it and
realizing it. So quote. This is some of his what
he was saying in the article. I'm sitting there watching
the game, absolutely crushed by what I'm witnessing. Buddy, we
saw it in the picture. Hurt, it hurt, And everyone
(54:29):
around me is on their phones. And I kind of
turn around, I'm like, why is everyone on their phones?
And then one of his buddies said, Walter, you're a memes.
They that's what they tell me. They go, Walter, You're
a meme. And I'm sitting here absolutely astonished, because how
could I become a meme? I'm just watching football. Well,
(54:50):
first of all, you become a meme because you have
Conway twitty hair in twenty twenty four, which, believe it
or not, well y yeah, big big skull. Also to
go it, believe it or not. He says his only
haircare routine is washing it every day with two and
one dial.
Speaker 3 (55:08):
Men are so much alike.
Speaker 1 (55:10):
Sometimes I don't walk, No.
Speaker 3 (55:13):
I didn't say you, but at ut.
Speaker 1 (55:15):
Bro with that hair, with that hair, I thought he
would have been one of mine, one of my kind
of those that has multiple hair products that they use daily. No,
he uses the good old dollar General two and one
dial shampoo. God bless him. A man of the people.
He went on to say, I have all these different
(55:37):
people showing me these Twitter posts. People are already commenting
on them, comparing me to Conway Twitty shout out and
you know butt head. As soon as I read it,
I was like, oh, I hadn't put that together, but
thank you for enlightening me. Yeah, that's definitely buttthead, now
that you say it. Uh so, Yeah, his his money
(56:00):
quote here, and I think it's the money quote for
this segment. You can't stop what's on the internet. You
just gotta roll with it.
Speaker 3 (56:08):
Yeah, that's so well said.
Speaker 4 (56:09):
And I mean it's so fast, like it all happened
within what like ninety seconds?
Speaker 3 (56:14):
Yeah, like no time.
Speaker 1 (56:16):
His picture, his face is on the broadcast, someone puts
a tweet out within a minute and it caught on
like crazy. Yeah, So I mean realistically a five to
ten minute timeline. And he is nationally known for the
rest of his life. Now that's insane.
Speaker 3 (56:33):
You know.
Speaker 4 (56:33):
We used to go out in nature and realize how
small we are, and now you can just look at
the Internet and it just goes so fast it's kind
of humbling. We used to realize how tiny we are.
Speaker 1 (56:42):
We used to do so much dumb crap that that
I never would have. I wouldn't even attempt half of
the things that I did at college football games back then,
out of fear of becoming a meme, because at least
if someone saw you do it on the broadcast, unless
their dad was like mine and taping everything so we
(57:02):
could go back and rewatch it like it wasn't it
was gone. It was in and out of our collective lives.
So I feel like I brought two really really strong
contenders to the table this week. Not that you didn't,
But if we're if we're now crusading for who we
(57:24):
think won, Hello, Darling.
Speaker 4 (57:27):
I think, well, okay, yeah, he McKee can win, that's fine,
But I think it's the Orca. The Retaliation of the
Orca is new chapter at SeaWorld San Antonio. San Antonio
is now a part of the Orca.
Speaker 1 (57:42):
Yes we're lost. We're going with Shamoo and SeaWorld and
San Antonio. Although let's let's keep the trainers out of
the water.
Speaker 3 (57:52):
Hey snows, I'm not laughing. I'm like scared for them.
I'm not kidding the terrors.
Speaker 1 (58:00):
And so was your laugh. That will do it for
who won the Internet? You like how I get to
decide when we're done, so I get to leave you wind. Yeah,
now you spoke, We're giving it to the Orcas all hell,
the Orcas Rise, the rise, the collective orca population of
(58:21):
the world, reclaim what is yours. That'll do it for
another week of the sports cave. Roommate. It's good to
have you back. I'm glad your work schedule might finally
be slowing down a little bit.
Speaker 3 (58:32):
Good to be here.
Speaker 1 (58:33):
Well, it's good to have all of y'all listening as well.
I appreciate you riding along for another week of this thing.
Let's enjoy some baseball, let's enjoy some college football, and
get ready for that Cowboys Sunday night when or just
call it the end of the season. Yeah, it's it's
that bad you You might see me in a prime
(58:57):
Prime form come Sunday night. But we will talk about
everything that happens come next week. Y'all have a good weekend.
We will talk on Monday by kids. What do we
say about drugs?
Speaker 3 (59:11):
You just stay
Speaker 5 (59:14):
Yeah,
