to episode four thirty nine of the Straight Shooters available
wherever podcasts are found. My name is Von Johnson and
I'm joined as always by my main man, Pots and Pans,
Nick Pocone, the Fox, phl the Gambler, and Philly Influencer,
and we have yet another fantastic show ahead of us
here on episode four thirty nine. It is a recap

and a discussion about the two night extravaganza known as
SummerSlam from Metline Stadium in East Brother Food, New Jersey.
Before we get into our recap, and we are recording
this literally as Monday Night Raws coming on the air,
so we got it on in the background, so some
things we're talking about we might be able to answer

a questions because literally got the show as we record this.
But before we get into our discussion about Summer Slam
twenty twenty five, I gotta do my weekly check on
my main man, Pots and Pants. Nick. How are you
on this Monday evening, My good brother.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
It's been a good few days. It's been like cool
weather around here in the Philly area, and now today
it just goes back up to the high eighties and nineties.
Miserable all over again. But we got football this week.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
We do, we do. Preseason begins. Well, they had the
Hall of Fame game last Thursday, Eagle rest of the leek. Yeah,
the rest of the league starts on Thursday on Eagles
host the Cincinnati Bengals. Right, yep, A West forgot the schedule, Yes,
the Bengals, So yeah, that's happening. This past weekend of

Phillies got their closer.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
It looks like, yeah, that was exciting.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
It makes the bullpen it's a little more deep when
you don't have guys playing, you know, out of position.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Almost soul should have gotten a bat. But you know,
we'll enjoy this for now. Hopefully in October it pays off.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
That's what you hope, right, I mean some having a
good setup person and closer can win you a game,
multiple games, a bunch of games, right, that's what you hope.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
You gotta get the.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Lead, yeah, yeah, but all you need is one, probably
just one, especially when the pitchers are nearly throwing complete
games or have enough stuff for complete games.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
And it was almost frustrating watching a Sunday night baseball
game with the Phillies and at the same time as
Summer Slam going on or the main event. John and
Rosa's like, I hope nothing good happens on either show,
or I hope everything good happens on both shows, because
I gotta pay attention to both.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
So you mentioned it SummerSlam twenty twenty five, and we'll
start art with that main event you were talking about. Uh,
We're gonna start with Night two and then we'll go
back to Night one. But let's start with the big
headline out of Night two. Number one. Uh, Cody Rose
is the new w W undisputed what do they call

it undisputed WWE champion? I think that whatever. He's a
ww champion, which is almost like third on the list
of hot headlines when you look at social media. But
we're gonna start there. We just get it out the way.
Cody is the ww champion and him and John Cena
had a I think a tremendous match to close out
SummerSlam that was miles better than the WrestleMania match. It's

like they were out there trying to make up for
the debacle that was WrestleMania, and I think.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
They did a good shot of it.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Absolutely the oldest one after.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
That, Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
But besides Cody winning the title, which I think we
kind of all saw coming, was the night before Johnsen
had turned babyface again.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yeah, I missed it because I did not watch SmackDown
Friday night, so I had no idea this happened until
I was on the Tough Cover show at Mark Henry
Junior and Roy Burton's Saturday morning, and they kind of
tipped me off on it, so I was able to
watch the promo before Night one, like in between my
appearance and then Summer Slam Night one, and I didn't

(04:25):
buy it for one second, like, and I don't know
why they did that. I was like, Okay, so I
guess he's just gonna make Cody drop his guard again,
but his guard down again. But the way they did it,
I mean, at least it wasn't predictable. I guess.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
I see this is when predictable can be good.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Exactly. Well, I'm not saying it's a good thing.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
I don't think the way this is all handled was good.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
No, I agree.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
I think let's let's just go. Let's just think this
is why not a little bit John Steen is hill
to as it's now because it's done now we can
look back on it. In totality Trash one of the
worst ever, so bad. It started off with a loud
bang and it was not much after that, and that

included WrestleMania Wolf.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
And right away Rock distanced himself from that.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
I see why because the program.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
I agree, I see why now see.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
The promost scena cut from the moment he turned heel
were like off, they didn't match. It just didn't feel right.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
You think the first one was like okay, like okay,
and then it just didn't get better.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
They never fully bought in neither right, Like it's just
to me, there was opportunities to get creative and really
the only thing they did was turn this tight and
tron black. But even then he still wore the colorful
shirts because they still got to sell merch ivy. So
I guess it's the acknowledgment that it was kind of

a filler. They just said, seea, just apologize and you'll
be a good guy again. It's like, all right, but did.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Not SmackDown to all places and again.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Friday before ten o'clock PM.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
And I I kind of threw away SmackDown in my mind.
I was like okay, like I'm going to be out
of the bar a couple of friends watching the Phillies game.
I'm not going to watch SmackDown, And I had no
intention of watching its Saturday before SummerSlam. And then once
Mark and Roy give your heads up, oh yeah, I
seen it's her baby face. I was like, what, Like

I couldn't even I wasn't even on Twitter, Like it
wasn't even on Twitter. Maybe I was paying more attention
to Johan Duran and the Phillies. Yeah, but yeah, I
didn't see any of that on my timeline. So I
was in the dark and I was like, there's no
way I watched her baby face again, and.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
He just like, I'm sorry, y'all. I was. I was wilding.
I was tripping, like what we kind of expected, but
it was rather abrupt, right, and then it was just
like the next day he comes out or two days later,
I guess he comes out of Summer Slam, and he's
got all the bills and whistles of his entrance again,
like good, like the good old days of six months ago, and.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Which is crazy and how loud that life got at
least came through TV. I told earlier, like I can't
hear well through my living room TV, but that came
through pretty loud.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
They were on Johnson. They were very much in favor
of Johnson and winning that title. Keeping to Cody get
booed event, that's not as much as the why it
six did.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
I felt like there was a portion of the main
event where Cody was got booed when he was.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
I'm sure he was, but I was like, I don't think.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
They because I was. I thought Cody was gonna turn heels,
so I was kind of like, I'm expecting that, but.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
I think a lot of people were, and I think
that would have coincided with seeing his baby face turn.
But yep, that's something. If you're gonna do it, you
do it during the match, right, not the night before
into two days later or two days later, not even
the night before tie nights before.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Yeah, And I had to convince myself, Okay, this makes
sense because seen in Things is gonna be like Mano
a mano, and Cody's gonna be the one the almost
like a Summer Slam ninety four with Lex Luger and
Ta Tanka when Tataka's calling Lex to sellout with that
devas the entire time and alone and behold, Ta Taka's
the sellout. So I thought we were gonna get like
a throwback to that, and we just didn't. I probably

would have preferred that, honestly.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
Yeah, well, look, the match itself was great. He'll Turn.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
I couldn't believe how like I think maybe halfway through
I was like, oh, they're they've already out there on their.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Yeah, honestly, and again, the match was great. And I
think that seen as He'll Turn and subsequent run is
a symptom of I think a larger problem from WW
right now for me at least, and maybe I'm in
the minority, but w w's creative has been rocky as
hell in I.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Don't think it's the minority anymore. I think a lot
of people realize like they're trying to course correct a lot,
and it's some course corrections are not hitting either. So
it's one of those things where it's like damn.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
But it's not to me. It's not about course correcting
as much as this you got to make the show
feel more exciting. There's just no juice to the show.
If I were to give and we'll talk about both nights,
but if I would give SummerSlam. A rating, it'd be
B for boring. That's how I feel about it. But

(09:42):
it was just kind of boring outside of the main
events of each show. The rest of the show, especially Sunday.
I don't know what it was about Sunday.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
What is he booking?

Speaker 1 (09:56):
I don't know, Bro, I don't know. We're gonna talk
about it. But like I think they there's a need
for a course correction. It's not just with one particular story.
It's with a lot of things that's happened at WWE.
And I was willing to give them the benefit of
the doubt in twenty three and in twenty four because
they was putting up numbers. Right, it's putting out great content,

or at least content that was at least good, right,
And I know people might have said always overrated. I
think the content they were putting out, the stories they
were telling, were really good. But in twenty twenty five,
it's it's different. It's different, and it's like soon as
twenty twenty five hit, it changed. In twenty four, it

was pretty good throughout the year, pretty good. Not everything
was tremendous, but you know, it was passable. Now we're
halfway through twenty twenty five, and I was kind of
waiting and giving them the benefit of the doubt, like
I said, And then SummerSlam happened, and it felt like
you could have skipped each night outside of the main events,
you could have just not watched the show. And I
don't think I felt like that about a WW show
in a why in a while since the Vince mcmhon days.

So something ain't right. I don't know what it is,
but they just need some more life in the show.

Bro.

It's just the show overall. There's a lot of people there.
They try to get the influencers involved and create these
and manufacture these vibes, but the vibes ain't vibing. You see,
you hear the crowd on each night. They're just not excited.
And you can blame oh people say, oh, you got
the fans. They make too much money. They're not real fans.
I don't know if that's the case. Bro. If you

spend on thousands of dollars on wrestling, you better dan
well be a fan, right. If not, you could be
there for the premium experience and for the cloud or whatever,
but like you better dan Well be a fan, but
also I can. I can't put the onus on the people,
but so much it's still the onus goes on the company.
If you give them something to cheer for, they'll cheer.
Like they saw John Cena is like yay, we like him.

But everything else just didn't have it for some reason.
I don't know, But what were your thoughts on the
match yourself and and Johnson's heel turn that's thankfully over.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
I'm just glad we got the bells and whistles that
we needed at WrestleMania. In terms of like I mean,
I guess the street fight kind of like Sena coming
up from the stage with Cody on his shoulders was
as corny as it can be. It was like great, great,
it was like this is not wrestling, but it's awesome,
you know, Like I loved it. I loved it. Just

like his face and everything.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
I'm like, oh my god, it was like a nineties
action movie.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
Yeah, he had it like wait forever for that. He
had to wait forever for that thing to come fully up.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
Yes we did have to wait, but you cat, I
can just imagine it. Right at the Trump put music
kicks in, It's like Robo cop d D d dun dun,
dum dun. It comes up and all that, like.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
Some of the attitude adjustment, like off the rope, I
was like, oh, this is it, Like Cody's.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Not threw Cody, he just threw them.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
So then there were moments in the match where I, like,
I like to in my mind play like, oh, this
isn't the end, like he's kicking out. Oh he's going
to kick out, And they got me a couple of
times during that match, So kudos to them. And I
definitely thought Cody would turn at some point. So I
was a little like underwhelmed because I kind of wanted

to see it because it would have given juice to
not only seen the rest of the year, but obviously Cody,
who I thought could use it after WrestleMania, now like
he's literally, like you said, the third headline of the
weekend and he's WW champion. He's holding their quote unquote

(13:39):
more important world title. I just I don't know what
to think about that, honestly, because he didn't turn heel.
Maybe I don't know how quickly this whole rock stuff
came together, but maybe they wanted him to turn heel
and then they changed it up because of Brock. I
don't know, but I haven't read anything yet in terms

of like the behind the scenes stuff of that. Maybe
we'll see it on w W Unreal in a year. Yeah,
that's where everything's older. It's like Wrestling with Shadows were
like the Screwjob was when it came out Deceummer ninety eight.
So I'm like, well, I kind of don't care about
it anymore, but I'll watch it.

But speaking up, we will do a podcast on ww
Unreal and review the show, so that will be happening
once Nick finishes. The show's we're waiting on.

Okay, is there only five or there going to be more?

Speaker 1 (14:33):
As far as I know, they're unless I've read the
screen wrong something that there's only five episodes and they
said to one. Okay, yeah, so unless I read it wrong.
But father, I know they were only five and it
dropped all on the same day. So but after the
main event of Summer Slam, you know, John Cena has
his time in the ring because this is his final
Summer Slam, and Cody gets out of there and gives

scene of the ring and then that Scena is soaking
it in and he's taking in the crowd noise. It
catch his own music so they can hear the fans.
You hear that familiar guitar riff, that means.

Familiar with that. Yeah, over the years.

Yeah, I mean yeah. If you listen to this podcast,
you know what riff I'm talking about, and it's Brock,
Lesner Beard and Ponytail and all cowboy. Brock is back
and people got feelings. Now, if you recall, last time
