Speaker 1 (00:03):
The strange doctor weird.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Good evening, Come in, won't you? Wayward was the murderer.
You seem to get nervous. Perhaps the cemetery outside the
houses upset you. But there are things for worse than cemeteries,
for instance, men with murder in their hearts. And in
(00:35):
my story tonight, the story I call the Devil's Caverns.
My story The Devil's Caverns begins in the desolate and remote,
moping country of New Mexico. It is early morning in
(00:59):
a large hunting lodge. John Drake, the noted naturalist and explorer,
is speaking to his two nephews, Victor and Paul.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
You too, have just wasted your time coming to New
Mexico to see me. I told you both a dozen
times I won't increase your allowances, and that's final. But
Uncle John, you can hardly expect Victor and myself to
live on five thousand.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Quiet, Paul.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Uncle John has always been most generous to us. If
he feels that he can't give us any more, we
should be satisfied.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Victim, hear me. It's nine o'clock and I'm not even
at work.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
I must leave now.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Oh you're going to those caverns you're discovered in the mountains.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Yes, would you take here to come with me?
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Thank you, uncle John. Scoring caverns is hardly in our line.
But you can't go back to New York without seeing
the Devil's caverns.
Speaker 5 (01:44):
The Devil's caverns.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Yes, thank hole led because they're so huge and dark.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Hey mayding to anyone with a scientist like myself, the
caverns would be rather terrifying.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
I see.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Well, thanks anyway, Uncle John.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Perhaps some other time. Well, i'll see you both this
evening when they're.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Regret the old fool Worth millions and he wastes his
time exploring caverns. Perhaps we made a mistake in not
going to the caverns with him.
Speaker 5 (02:14):
What do you mean?
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Last night Uncle John spoke about finding holes in the caverns, holes.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
Hundreds of feet deep.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
What are you getting at? Suppose Uncle John were to
accidentally fall into one of those holes, you and I
would inherit his millions.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
Say, I hadn't thought of that?
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Well I have, Yes, Paul, Tomorrow you and I will
accompany Uncle John into the caverns.
Speaker 5 (02:38):
Who knows, perhaps he will meet with an accident.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
It's just a little further to the entrance to the caverns.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
And Uncle John, why did you make us wear leather
gloves and high shoes and there for protection against the
wretch and devil's cavern.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
You mean the rats in there are dangerous?
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Oh not really, it's just that now and then when
I'm taking their patches, and then there's the bets, the
most from markable specie.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Yeah, here we are. You just lead the way.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
It was just by sheer look that I stumbled on
the entrance. What it certainly is dark in here.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
Second, I'm turning my flashlight. Eh.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Well, I can understand now what you call these the
devil's caverns.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
Something terrifying about this place?
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Yes, and there are others even more terrifying. Come on,
I'll show them to you just a minute, Uncle John.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Went Poor Paul, Paul, where in the world are you
lighting a candle? I'm going to leave us candle here
by the entrance. I think you will stop every fifty
yards and leave a burning candle so we won't get lost. Yes,
the candles will serve as beacons to guide us back
to the entrance here.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
But that isn't necessary. Why I know every inch.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Of all the caverns by no, nevertheless, Uncle John, we'd
feel safer this way. Very well.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
We're gonna make you feel YEA did not come along.
There's so much I wanted to show you. If you
don't come over here, boys, i'll show.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
You one of those holes I was telling you about.
We'll be there just as soon as we light another candle,
Uncle John. How many candles does this make, Paul?
Speaker 5 (04:18):
This is the tenth candle. I figure we come more
than a quarter of a mile.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Everything's working out perfectly.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
Look back.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
You can see four of the candles burning, and the
other six are around that turn. Yeah, I'm alone now.
We mustn't keep Uncle John waiting.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
They are.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Now I'm going to show you another of the wonder
of these caverns, this hole.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
I'm shining my flesh light.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
A something just crushed against my foot.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
There was just one of the cavern reds they discovered.
We're here listening. Sounds like you're thousands of them, Yes, sir,
nasty little fellows too.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
Nine leather gloves and high shoes will protect this if
they go too bold, I hope.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
So now, yesterday I measured the depth of this hole,
and much to my amazement. I discover that it's nine
hundred and twenty feet deep.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
Nine hundred and.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Twenty feet If anyone fell in that it'd be quite
a fall. Shine your flashlight down the hold, uncle John,
so we can see what it looks like. Hey, well,
of course you won't be able to see the bottom,
but at least you'll get an idea of howp What
are you taking my arms?
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Boys?
Speaker 4 (05:31):
We just want to make sure you don't.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Fall in, Yes, Uncle John, after all you're awfully close
to the yair.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Nonsense, boys, I won't pull in the Let go my arms,
so I stop pushing me.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
What's come over? You don't follow you, poor uncle John?
But then accidents will happen.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Doctor, After listening to the first part of your story,
don't you think some of our listeners may be a
little shaky.
Speaker 6 (06:01):
Or I can't understand why.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
But if they are, I suppose we ought to suggest
something to bolster their confidence.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
A doctor, that's a good idea, And then there's nothing
that gives a fellow more confidence in himself than correct attire.
For that reason, may I suggest that your wardrobe include
at least one of the many smart correctly styled Adam
hats made of blustrous all furfelt in a wide variety
of soft harmonizing shades. Adam hats are the epitome of
(06:31):
fine quality and good taste. You'll appreciate too the distinctive
hat fans and other important details of your Adam hat.
Top off that well dressed look gentleman with an Adam hat.
Speaker 6 (06:45):
Now back to mystery and doctor Weir, And now I'll
continue my story the Devil's Caverns.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
After John Drake's death, screaming made it away.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Only the shrill squeaking of the rats and the heavy
freezing of the two men remained.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
For a moment.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
The two stood in darkness. Then Victor spoke, all right, Paul,
turn on Uncle John's flashlight and let's get out of here.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
I haven't got a splashlight.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
He fell in before I could take it away from
what you stupid fool. I might have known you'd bungle it.
Speaker 5 (07:23):
Now what have we got? Wait a minute, I have
my cigarette lighter. If it only works.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
There, it doesn't give much light, but it'll do. Oh,
come on, let's get out of here. Place gives me
the creeps. Yes, now there's the first candle a few
yards away come along, Victor.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Look a first candle just went off.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Yes, that draft probably blew it out.
Speaker 5 (07:50):
Handle was right over here on this rock.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
Oh, Victor, it's gone gone. Nonsense, you've probably left it
on another rocket. Well, let's not waste time this. There's
the second, and we'll fifty yards ahead.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
All right.
Speaker 5 (08:02):
Tell you that was a rock I left it on.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Now it's going hall.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Look the second candle, it seems to be moving.
Speaker 5 (08:10):
It's falling over. What's going on? But I said, someone floor,
don't be a fool. Look the third candle's beginning to flicker.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
It can't go out. It mustn't go out.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
Hurry, don't figure it.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Has gone out. Now at any.
Speaker 5 (08:26):
Candles to guide us out of you get hold of yourself.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
I've got my eye fixed on the spot where the
third candle went out. Once there, we merely have to
turn the bend to see the other candles, asked, But
suppose suppose there are two? They won't be.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
It's Uncle John. He's going ahead of us, pouring out
the candles, so we can't escape. How could it be
Uncle John? He's dead.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
It's his ghost that's doing it.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
It's getting revenge on us for what we did quiet?
Speaker 4 (08:52):
Do you hear?
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Listen the rats, that's it. They're the ones who are
knocking the candles over.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
They're carrying them off.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
They they hungry, they're attracted by the wax and candles.
Speaker 5 (09:07):
Why are you stunning?
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Can't you see?
Speaker 3 (09:09):
The path divides into three here? Do you remember which
is the way out?
Speaker 5 (09:14):
I don't remember these three paths at all.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
We must have come by the middle path.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
Yes, I'm sure that's the one.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Come on, we're bound to behind the imprant after all
the hours research where Why don't you?
Speaker 5 (09:32):
Why do you keep on saying.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
That over and over? We're lost?
Speaker 3 (09:35):
And you know we are.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
We're never gonna get out of here. Never.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
I'm gonna shout out the scene to that. Stop talking
about uncle John. He's dead, dead, No, he's all around us.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
I can feel him.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
He blew out all the candles, and I always waiting
for us to die, even the rest that we're gonna
die with.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
A cigarette light him.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
It's gone ours and it's like John, he blew it out.
It won't work, the fuel's all gone.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Hou Where are you? I'm over here?
Speaker 4 (10:01):
You have some matches, haven't you? Yes?
Speaker 5 (10:03):
Those matches are a matter of life and death.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
We don't dare.
Speaker 5 (10:06):
Walk in the darkness, not with all those holes around her. Paul,
keep talking so I can find you. How can you
find any when I've lost You'll never.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Find me, Paul, What is it?
Speaker 5 (10:16):
I'll go He's got first, pat he's started taking.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Gonna be a fool.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
It was a bat to the fresh pasture.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
Paul. I was like, tell him, he's started day.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
No, wait, wait, Paul, come back, come back.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
You're here.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
It's dangerous to run like Paul.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
He's falling into a hole.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
He's gone here.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Now I'm all alone about any light.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
It's all so uncle Johnny.
Speaker 5 (10:39):
You think you've gotten the better of me, but you haven't.
You haven't You here.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
Got to get to hold myself.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
I must.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
If I go to pieces, I'll never get out of here.
I got to take this thing out.
Speaker 5 (10:49):
There must be some ways that I can How. Oh,
one of those frets hit me.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
But they're swarming all around me.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
How I've got to fight them off?
Speaker 4 (10:58):
By Dot's.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
Too bad of our poor Victor. Wasn't it such a
horrible way to die? Two weeks later, when a searching
party entered the cabin, they found a clean, white skeleton
lying a few hundred yards from the entrance. Unfortunately, they
were never able to find a trace of John Drake
and Paul. It was as if as if they had
(11:32):
vanished from the face of the earth.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
Now I once knew a dead man.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Who would Oh, you have to go now, Perhaps you'll
drive you on me again soon. Just looked for the
house on the other side of the cemetery, the house
of doctor Weir.
