Hello, and welcome to the Stupid History Minute. I'm your
host Kep Pound. Today we're talking about Big Red and no,
not the gum, I already did that one. We're talking
about the beloved mascot of Western Kentucky University, which was
created in nineteen seventy nine by student Ralph Carey to
boost school spirit and represent the Hilltoppers in a unique way.

Rather than choosing an animal or traditional figure, Carrie designed
Big Red as a big red, furry, gender neutral blob.
The original costume costs about nine hundred bucks to build
and made its debut during a basketball game on December one,
nineteen seventy nine. Known for its belly slides, goofy dances,
and exaggerated expressions, Big Red quickly became a fan favorite.

Over time, it gained national attention and was inducted into
the Mascot Hall of Fame in two thousand and seven.
