Speaker 7 (03:53):

going on in this room.

Speaker 11 (03:57):
Fight.

Speaker 7 (03:57):
There must be some mistake. I'd like to come.

Speaker 6 (04:00):
Didn't take a look around. But what for a sheriff?
Is nothing wrong here? You you mind standing the side?

Speaker 7 (04:04):
Well? Sure? Or sure that's the way you feel about it.
Come on here, see there's nothing wrong in here.

Speaker 8 (04:11):
Who's out in the bathroom? My father, he's taken a bath.

Speaker 7 (04:14):
R Uh?

Speaker 6 (04:16):
What's that white potter on the floor next table?

Speaker 5 (04:19):
Where?

Speaker 7 (04:19):
Oh? Oh?

Speaker 6 (04:20):
That was uh some of my father's medicine. He spilled
it a while ago. I I was just getting ready
to clean it up when you not.

Speaker 7 (04:29):
Well, everything looks alright, I guess I you mind.

Speaker 6 (04:32):
Moving aside a second side and wat sheriff? You come on,
mister move?

Speaker 7 (04:36):
Was sure?

Speaker 6 (04:37):
Or I just didn't know what you meant. I'd terarely
get broken chairs? Oh oh, I had tripped over it
almost broke my neck when I fell. Matter of fact,
that's probably what made people think.

Speaker 7 (04:46):
There was a fight in here.

Speaker 6 (04:47):
I'm a big man, who when I fall, I really
go down hide.

Speaker 8 (04:51):
I think i'd like to.

Speaker 7 (04:52):
Have a word with your father.

Speaker 6 (04:54):
Well, like I told you, he's taking a baths. Why

miss pair.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
Oh, mister, the.

Speaker 7 (05:03):
Old man's a little hard of hearing with a water running. Oh,

Speaker 6 (05:08):
I wanna talk to you, mister.

Speaker 11 (05:11):
Reckon.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
I'll just have to go in.

Speaker 7 (05:13):

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Give me back that gun.

Speaker 5 (05:15):
Yeah, I'll give it back.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Oh what happened to that?

Speaker 5 (05:23):
That's the way God?

Speaker 10 (05:26):
Sure show up?

Speaker 6 (05:28):
Sure how.

Speaker 4 (05:37):
The sheriff recovered quickly on the bathroom floor, he found
the body of an elderly man. The dead man was
identified by the clerk as George Wilton, a rancher will
then had been the only guest registered.

Speaker 8 (05:47):
In that room.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
After requesting the clerk to phone the Texas Rangers, the
sheriff left to see if he could pick up the
trail of this sailant. Twenty minutes later, rangers Jace Person
and Clay Morgan climbed the stairs to the second floor
of the hotel.

Speaker 7 (06:00):
Looks like the room down here to the right chest.
Uh huh. If I was standing in front of the door,
I must be the desperat And ye ain't sure the
garden for us. He's not letting that crowd get anywhere
near all, right, excuse us.

Speaker 9 (06:10):
Get through this kind of side.

Speaker 7 (06:13):
Everybody send the bathroom right, anything been touched?

Speaker 4 (06:16):
Oh no, sir, no, sheriff left special orders. Not that
he's still be anything til you got here. Now, I
didn't even turn the water the water, yes, M running
into the bathtub. I had to pull the plug out though,
so wouldn't.

Speaker 8 (06:26):
Run over on the floor.

Speaker 7 (06:27):
Did you get a look at the man who ran away?

Speaker 4 (06:29):
Sure wish I had. I only saw his back. Sheriff
got a good look at it. No two good looks.
The way he put it, I mean he saw man
as mad as the sheriff was when he.

Speaker 7 (06:39):
Come to uh huh. We take a look inside now, Yeah,
what do we may want to ask you a few
more questions later.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
Yes, I expect you wanna talk to missus Beale too.
Now she's a lady first heard the fighting. Is she
around in her room right next door?

Speaker 7 (06:50):
Get it if you wanna, fine, we'll be out in
a few minutes, all right. The last room door is
a little Joe, and I don't expect you get any
prints off of going out now, but you better kick
it open your foot anyhow. Yeah, yeah, there he is,
M little suh. The shoot took some milk on the

(07:13):
head way. He's lying. I got an idea he was
dragged in here from the other room. I think he
looked through his pocket's play. I'll see if there's some
way to shut this water off.

Speaker 6 (07:21):
Yeah, might be a cut off valve back of the tub,
and there is.

Speaker 7 (07:27):
Find anything. No pockets are clean. Looks like it might
have been robbery. And you don't get a lab grew
up here to go over the place for a princes
And don't think they'll find too much, Jaez, Honey, mean
they's drinking glass with a tall stuffed in it, full
of dust. You notice how everything's white clean in here,
like somebody try to get rid of any possible prints.
He tried, alright. These other glasses, for instance, you can
see they've been used recently, but there's not a print

(07:48):
on 'em far as I can figure. There's only one
place in here. A friend forgot. Where's that over here?
I think you look at that water face up in
the tub. Yeah, good clear print. Say, if you're right
about the old man being dragged in here after he
was dead, there's a good chance this print belongs to
the guy who did it. See if there's anything outside
in the room.

Speaker 6 (08:09):
Chiller musta been pretty big to be able to slug
the sheriff as he as he did.

Speaker 7 (08:12):
Don't make it. The old fella had much of a
chance either, Like he put up a fight though baking
chair leg and hey, wait a minute, you looking at
that white powder on the floor. Yeah, could be one
other thing the killer didn't have time to clean up,
more like crystals than powder.

Speaker 8 (08:28):
Any idea what it is Jason that chair?

Speaker 7 (08:30):
But it shouldn't take the lab long to find out.
In the meantime, we'd better have a talk with a
woman who heard the fighting in here. Uh huh. Lucky
the sheriff got a look at the killer. He still
be able to make an identification. If that print in
the bathroom doesn't give us a lead, could be our
man won't even have a record. He doesn't. We won't
get much from the print or the monk fire.

Speaker 10 (08:46):
Oh hear the omiss field, missus b W Ranger the
desk cat said, you wanted to talk to me, Yes, ma'am.

Speaker 7 (08:54):
We're interested in anything you can remember about this.

Speaker 10 (08:56):
Yes, well, I was lying in bed trying to sleep.
I knew I wouldn't sleep because my athema was bothered
in me, but I thought i'd try anyhow.

Speaker 7 (09:04):
What time was this, ma'am?

Speaker 10 (09:05):
The time? Oh well, I'm not exactly sure, but it
couldn't have been more than thirty minutes after I took
my brown pills, so I'd say it was about nine.

Speaker 8 (09:13):
Sayd uh, it was just a couple of minutes to ten.

Speaker 7 (09:15):
When you call me, miss Bell, I know that, young man.

Speaker 10 (09:19):
What I wanted to tell the rangers started long before that.

Speaker 7 (09:23):
And let's see where was he? There were lying in bedmore?

Speaker 10 (09:25):
Oh, yes, well I heard the door open in the
next room. I didn't want to listen, but you know
how family these walls are, and when those people come
into the room, that made so much noise.

Speaker 7 (09:33):
How many were there?

Speaker 10 (09:34):
Well, there was an old man, I understand he was
the one who died, and there was a younger man.
He had a really deep voice.

Speaker 8 (09:43):
But the one I heard curious was the girl.

Speaker 10 (09:45):
The girl, that's right. She had the most piercing voice
I ever heard, and the way she was laughing, I
could tell she.

Speaker 6 (09:51):
Had no breeding.

Speaker 7 (09:52):
Could you hear what they were saying?

Speaker 12 (09:53):
Well, I I.

Speaker 10 (09:55):
Oh dead, just for not wow circuit for his Oh
that would be nice of you, young man. You tell
me whatever it is that.

Speaker 7 (10:01):
I'm very busy, ma'amah, ma'am, you were saying you could
hear the people in the next room were talking, Yes,
yes I could.

Speaker 10 (10:06):
They'd all been drinking, and then they started to tell
the most awful stories, simply awful. I wanted to put
my hands over my ears, Yes, ma'am. Well, the old
man was just fascinated by this hussy. Well, I'm sorry, rangers,
but that's the only word I know to describe her.
He laughed at everything she said and the things she said.

Speaker 7 (10:25):
Uh huh.

Speaker 10 (10:26):
Well, all of a sudden, the old man stopped laughing
and got real angry. He started shoting at the girl,
told her she'd put something in his drink. Then before
I with the most awful fight started, just awful, And
the next thing I knew, someone banged against the water
and I was almost throwed out of bed.

Speaker 7 (10:44):
Did you hear anything else?

Speaker 6 (10:45):
Yes?

Speaker 10 (10:45):
After that they were quispering in there.

Speaker 12 (10:47):
Uh, but it was slow.

Speaker 10 (10:48):
I I just couldn't hear what they were saying.

Speaker 8 (10:51):
So they want you to get in touch with the
shriff by radio as soon as you can.

Speaker 7 (10:55):
Thanks and thank you, missus Beale.

Speaker 10 (10:56):
But awesome are to tell you about when the sheriff
was up there.

Speaker 7 (10:59):
When you won't have to trouble you about that man,
the sheriff of Pilot and his report. Oh, come on quay. Yeah,
funny the way people enjoy getting mixed up in something
like this, scared to death and still get a kick
out of it. Yeah, she did help us, though. At
least we can be pretty sure now about our killer's racket,
the confidence game. Uh huh. You old man was probably
lonely and got a little careless about showing how much

(11:19):
money he had in his pocket. Yeah, he sure sounds
like the old story. I've got to hunch those crystals
we found on the floor turn out for the knockout drops.
Uh huh. Girl must a skipp before the sheriff got there,
and she could have gone out to set up their getaway.
And I sure hope either that print in the bathroom
pays off for the sheriff can make some kind of identification. Yeah,
and if we don't get any lead tonight, we have
the sheriff drive over to Austin with us in the

(11:40):
morning and go through the month file. Jason, I wonder
what the sheriff wants us to call him for. Find
out right now, get that code sheet out of the
glove compartment. See what his call number is. Will you Sheorgie,
let's see. Oh hey there's six nine two. Thanks, you're
