called Prelude to Felony.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
It is eight thirty Wednesday morning in is Mata, Texas,
July seventh, nineteen fifty one. As Sheriff Allen Hankins answers
the phone call in his office, Hankin's speaking Sure, he said, Buck, Whatley?
Oh morning, Buck? What can I do for you?
Speaker 5 (02:30):
Well, first off, you can help me locate four calves.
It was stole off my place last night.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
You sure they couldn't have strayed somewhere.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
Sure, I'm sure had eight of them in the field
out yonder. This morning four of them's gone. No fence
is broken. No way they could have got out. Somebody
took them, that's all.
Speaker 6 (02:46):
How long they've been missing? Back, I told you just
since last night. The kids were riding across the field
and the way to school. Just now heard the old
cow's ball and carrying on. My kid, Reno's pretty smart.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yeah, she turned back and seems the calves are missing. Well,
did you take a look at yourself? I sure did.
Speaker 5 (03:04):
I only got about fourteen head of my whole place, Sheriff.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
And I'm telling you I ain't mistaken. The calves are gone,
and you gotta help me find out who took them.
I'll come right on out Buck and see what we
got to go on. The sheriff went out immediately to
Buck Whatley's ranch. Upon investigation, he could find no clue
(03:30):
to the whereabouts of the missing calves, and by ten
thirty am he had called for the aid of a
Texas Ranger. Ranger Jas Pearson was assigned, and approximately eleven
forty five arrived at the Watley ranch. Hello, Sheriff, did
Jayson mighty gud to have you give it a hand?
(03:51):
This is Buck Quatley, morning Ranger. Is this the gentleman
who thinks he had some cattle stolen thing. I know.
I had eight calves out that field THEREO of them
just disappeared into thin air. I just came back from
checking the fences and there's no way they could have strayed. Jason,
what is it, Reno, we're busy. You kids beating? Now? Hey, Dad,
(04:12):
go on, Reno, don't bother me. Now, I'm talking to
the ranger, and Dad, this is my daughter. The kids
are sort of excited this morning because they're the one
to discovered the calves mission.
Speaker 7 (04:21):
I'm trying to tell you, Dad, we found them the calves.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Yeah, squear bound over Smith's place. Are that dirty crook
right in your south field?
Speaker 4 (04:29):
Hard to dee?
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Now, that's right, honest, I'm sure you never can trust anybody.
Are you sure they're your dad's calves? I'm dade sure
they are.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
You see, we took a short coop over by.
Speaker 7 (04:38):
His place on our way to school and we just
happened to see him four of them, and I know
they're my dad's.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Come on on some now, wait a minute, you've been
running that pony too hard. I take it easy, kids.
Let those horses rest them in it. They're pretty winded.
Speaker 6 (04:51):
Oh.
Speaker 8 (04:51):
I had to get back and tell them my dad,
Matt Smith having the calves you're going to rescue.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
We have to be sure he stole them first, don't.
Speaker 7 (04:58):
I just told you we found him right over there
in Schmidt's for you.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
What do you know about this Schmidt Sheriff. Oh, I've
known him for a long time. Jace lives there with
his little daughter. Always seemed like an honest, hard working
old fellow to me.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
I tell you, ranger, he stole arcades.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Well, we'll look into it. Reno say, how come you
kids aren't in school now? The Ranger's right. We know
you kids make tracks for school. Go on, beat it.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
We want to see you rested.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
You do like I said, Rena, I'll tell you're goode dad.
Speaker 7 (05:25):
Couldn't we just wait until he's arrested.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Maybe you better do what your dad says, Reno. We
can take care of things, all right, Get going, Reno?
Speaker 5 (05:32):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (05:33):
All right?
Speaker 4 (05:34):
School day?
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Yeah, you shouldn't let the kid run the horse that way,
mister Rockley and she'll ruin his mouth. He aanking at
it like that. You're right, but they needsy to tell
Reno what to do, especially when her mother's away. If
he's up visiting her sister this week, and I got
my hands full. I can tell you. Look at those
kids ride, Jacey. I shouldn't have a horse. If they
(05:57):
don't know how to take care of him. Well you
might as well go on over and have a talk
with Schmid. I guess do you want to come with us,
mister Wantley? Well, if they are your calves, you'll have
to identify them. All right, we can all go in
my car. Where do I head when I get out
of the ranch? Here, Sheriff, We're to see you over
yon across field where the kids are riding. Yeah, well
(06:18):
it's straight over that way, but we gotta go around,
and I'll be mighty surprised, Watley. If Gus Schmid ever
did any stealing of any kind, well, I guess we'll
soon find out. Well, there is the place. Well aren't
(06:46):
you coming with us? Mister Wantley? You mind ify wait
in the car rather you talk to him first? Suit yourself.
There he is coming around the house. Now, Hey Schmid,
oh ancors, I didn't see her drive in if I
shot in the back making some south each Gus, this
(07:09):
is Ranger Pearson. Oh yeah, I wonder if you could
answer a few questions for us. Not really, yeah, of
course gus. Four calves were found missing from Buck Watley's
ranch during the ninth four calves, and Wattley's daughter Reno
said she saw him on your place this morning. You
know anything about him?
Speaker 7 (07:30):
Man me?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Of course, I don't tell me, mister Smith. If you
got any cattle on your place here? Yeah? Just a few?
How many? Let me see if she charged together? I
think if we have them only for miliking and making butter,
you know, no calves? And yeah he got two? Where
do you keep them? Just down there in the field, Gotsia.
You don't mind if we have a look at him,
(07:53):
do you? No, of course not come. I assure you
you coming with us. Buck better come along, mister Wadley. Okay,
good morning mister Vatlier morning Smith. Well, no, I hear
you have some calves missing, four of them. Oh you
think they're straight away? I know they didn't or look,
(08:14):
mister you have been good neighbors. Yeah, sure you don't
think I took these cats from you? Well seems believing
when I come, promise me, look, mister Vat you want
to look on my place, why don't you come and
say so? Instead? You bring a sheriff, want a ranger too,
like I'm a thief. Yeah, well, my kid, we knows
that she's seen them here. Ah, you know she tells
(08:36):
from many lives. I ster I flees and eat you
and look, Schmid, I don't like your talking that way
about my kid. It's true. All right, just hold it,
both of you. Let's have a look at your calves. Gus. Yeah, yeah,
I show you I have two and say, ah mine,
come on, w nine neighbors are have Yeah. If I
find anybody's caps on my place, I bring them back myself.
(08:57):
Yeah there are those kids again. They haven't gone to
school yet. Yeah, playing hooky and you're not staying on
my place. I tell you, Renal, you hurt me. Yeah,
that's the right. You tell her to gos Tram, get
out all of you. I'll give my own kid order Smith. Well,
she does not come on my place again. Now, I
tell you, mister Varney, she is a devil. This Reno
(09:18):
she's a dance. I'd smarter than your kid, Smith. Lark
is a good girl. And Reno she has smart like
a hyena. Yeah, she puts cement in my vel and
gravel in the mesh. You keep that little devil off
my land from now on, mister Vatt. So you don't
like the kids snooping around a Schmidt, I tell you
I chase them off, and they come here the next time.
No wonder you wonder? Rush So Reno's a liar?
Speaker 7 (09:41):
Is she?
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Yeah? I say she is. How many curves did you
say you had? Girls? I have two? Better countm Schmid? One,
two oh, three, four, five, six? You got six here
all together? Yeah, it's true, and four one of them
is mine? How about that, mister Smith? Well Rashley, I
(10:04):
I don't know. Guess I'm afraid you got a little
explaining to do. But fuss and I explained. I got
two calves on here, a six. I don't know how
they come to be on my place. Oh h, I
wait a minute, Wadley, mister Schmid, four of these aren't
your calves? Then, no, you haven't any idea how they
got here? They say yours, mister Rackley. It takes them away.
(10:27):
I don't want anything that's not my own. Well, I
guess we found what we were looking for. But yeah,
we sure did so, mister Raley. I'm sorry I should
be here on my place, But how I don't know.
I really ought to have the sheriff run in Schmidt,
But now that I found them, I guess I'll just
run them on home. The kids are still hanging around.
(10:50):
You don't mind very well, do they? Wadley? No, I
tell you, mister Rackley, the next time that daughter of
your should come on my place, I send my sheriff
myself on type our arrest. Oh you will huh yeah,
saying that I am a thief. She should have her
mouth hoist out with Brown. So now look here, Schmidt.
If anybody's gonna be arrested, it's gonna be you. Now
(11:10):
I'm gonna show you. I'm swearing not to complaint against
Schmid for cattle that sheriff. Go ahead, sight in. You're
gonna do you no good. Oh now wait a minute,
But no, I was gonna let him off, but now
I ain't gonna. Let's get on down to your office here,
come on, said, yes, we gotta take you in. No,
let go. Nobody is asking me for something I did
not do. Con Come on, Smith, this kind of thing
(11:32):
isn't gonna do you any good. Let's ride down and
talk things over, shall we. No, nobody's taking me into
my teeth. Well, the calves were found here, mister Smith.
And since Watley's preferring charges, I'm praid you're under arrest,
but I did not take those traps. I tell you,
maybe not, But you're coming with us anyway, all right,
(11:53):
I comes in in just a moment.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
We will continue with Tales of the Texas Rangers, starring
Joel McCrae as Ranger Jace Pearson.
Speaker 9 (12:16):
Today, more than ever before, America needs all of us.
It needs every ounce of manpower that it can muster
to outproduce the world. And only through production can it
gain strength industrial strength to remain a free and independent nation,
strong enough to be beyond fear of aggression. Now that
means using all of our manpower, including thousands and thousands
(12:39):
of handicapped persons, both veterans and non veterans. So if
you are an employer, don't overlook this opportunity for added
production through added manpower.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Hire the handicap. How do you go about it?
Speaker 9 (12:52):
Simple, just get in touch with the nearest office of
your state employment service. Now, if you are a handicapped
man or woman and you want a job, you also
should contact that same office of your state employment service.
Remember to remain strong, America needs all of us on
the job. Hire the handicapped, and keep them on the job.
(13:12):
And now back to tales of the Texas Rangers.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
We continue now with tales of the Texas Rangers and
our authentic story pril you to felony.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
We dropped the Sheriff and Wantley off at the ranch
to pick up their cars, and then I drove schmid
On down to the Sheriff's office with me. After Watley
filed charges against schmid he went home to wait for
in order to recover his calves. Meantime, the Sheriff and
I were having our troubles with Schmidt. Yes, you've already
told us the calves we found on your place were
not yours. Yeah, yeah, it's true. But still I did
(13:57):
not steal them. Guys, listen, we're not asking you to
say you did. All we want you to do is
sign a statement that the calves don't belong to you. No,
I'm not shining those statements that I am a chief gus. Look,
my secretary here has been taking down everything you've said
in your own words. Just let her type up a
statement and then sign it and we'll let you go. Home. Yeah, yeah,
(14:18):
how long? Will it take? Only about a half hour? No,
I cannot do it, Narcle will be coming home from
school now, and I have promised I will take her
to a party at my sister laws. Well, guys, I'm
afraid you can't go till we tell you to, but
she will be frightened. It's getting late, I tell you what, Gus.
I'd like to talk to Knock about this anyway. So
(14:39):
why don't I ride out and drive her over to
the party while you sign those papers? Huh would you
do this? I'd be glad to so. Narkat will show
you where Ali lives. And would you see the chairs?
A little sweater? She takes cold very easy, Narka does
I sure will, Gus, Yeah, mister Ranger, yes please? Could
(15:00):
can you say as little as Pasha bruk knaka a Baptish.
While the sheriff was holding Schmid at the office, I
went out to his ranch to get the little girl.
When I turned in the road, I saw the same
gang of kids that had been hanging around earlier. They
were gathered in a bunch by the ranch house porch.
(15:20):
I saw me drive up. They mounted and took off
in a hurry down the road, Alka, is it? I'm
ranger Pearson? Say what's the trouble? You're going to a party,
aren't you? Your eyes will be all read. Nothing's worth
crying that hard about.
Speaker 7 (15:42):
I don't want to go to the party.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Now. Were those kids saying to you just now? Anyhow?
Speaker 7 (15:47):
They said my father's a thief?
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Who said that?
Speaker 7 (15:50):
Reno and Din? They all did? They said he's a
thief and he's going to jail.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Mind if I sit down on this step with you
a minute.
Speaker 7 (16:01):
Did you come to rest my father?
Speaker 2 (16:03):
No? I came to drive you over to the party.
Speaker 7 (16:06):
You did? Wait till Reno hears about that. Reno just
means she's not only mean to me, but she's mean
to Satan. If I had a nice little horse like that,
I know.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Noka. Listen, your dad told me you're a pretty sensible kid.
Speaker 7 (16:21):
Did he? Where did you see my papa in town?
Speaker 2 (16:25):
As a matter of fact, I just left him.
Speaker 7 (16:27):
Where is he?
Speaker 2 (16:28):
He's all right? Knock and he'll be home when you
get back from your aunt.
Speaker 7 (16:31):
Allis why isn't he here?
Speaker 2 (16:33):
Now?
Speaker 7 (16:35):
If you know anything about my papa, then you better
tell me, especially if it's true. What Reno said.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
What did Reno say?
Speaker 7 (16:44):
She said, Papa's a thief and he's going to jail.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Noka, do you know anything about four calves that were
found in your field this morning? No? You sure? Yes?
Speaker 7 (16:56):
I mean yes, I do. I took them when yesterday morning.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
I'm afraid your story isn't very good. Knaka calves disappeared
last night. Oh you know, telling stories never helped anybody
very much. Besides, if your dad didn't take the case,
didn't there's nothing to worry about. He's just down talking
to the sheriff and he'll be throwing plenty of time
to pick you up. Now, come on, you don't want
to miss any of the party, do you No?
Speaker 7 (17:25):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Well, by the way, I promised your dad I wouldn't
let you forget your sweater. Where is it?
Speaker 7 (17:30):
It's unfenced.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
Why don't you run back and get it? All right? Oh? Oh,
what's the matter on Aka?
Speaker 7 (17:41):
I can find it. It isn't here.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Sure you didn't leave it in school?
Speaker 7 (17:47):
No, it was right here. They took it. Now I
know why DNK was acting so funny.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
Who's ding?
Speaker 7 (17:53):
Oh he's Reno's boyfriend. He was making fun of my sweaters.
I guess he stole it, that's what he did. Couldn't
you arrest him?
Speaker 2 (18:02):
Well, unless I was really sure he took it on purpose?
Speaker 7 (18:04):
Well he did.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
Where does Dink live?
Speaker 7 (18:07):
He lives over on the other side of the wash.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
Well let's stop by that way, shall we. Yes, come on, man,
let's go fine. Mail. Yeah, your dad tells me you
walk to school every day. Knock huh, Yes, well maybe
(18:29):
that's what gives you those rosy cheeks. You ever thought
of that? Oh?
Speaker 7 (18:33):
I don't mind walking so much, but I wish I
had a horse, any kind of a horse.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Do the other kids s teaze you for walking? Uh? Huh?
You will have a horse someday. Knocker, I bet you
there is there'd hey pull up their son? Me? Yes? You, yes, sir?
You stay here now, I'll handle this all right.
Speaker 7 (18:58):
Do you want me ranger?
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Yeah? Yes, I want to talk to you. Yes, sir?
Did you take a red sweater from Schmid's place? Just now? No, sir,
I didn't you? Sure, yes, sir? And what's this piece
of yarn doing in the catch of your saddle bag? Huh?
Right here, this little piece of wool. Let's see what
you got in here?
Speaker 4 (19:18):
You can see there isn't any sweater in there, sir.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Yes I can, and that's why I want you to
tell me where it is. I don't know, Ranger, you
better tell me. I'm not fooling now. I'll give it
to Reno. You can get in trouble for taking other
people's belongings, son, Yes, you know that, Yes, sir. What'd
you want to take a little girl's sweater for anyway?
Speaker 4 (19:39):
Well, Reno said she wanted it for tonight.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
What's going on tonight? Go on, speak up. I can't
tell you. Well, you better tell me. Come on out
with it.
Speaker 8 (19:50):
Well, Reno wants to plant it planet. Well, you know,
she wants to make it look as though Nalka did
it this time.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Did what? Well, hurry up.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
Well, we took some calves from Reno's dad.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
You mean you kids took those calves over to Schmid's place. Yeah,
what's the big idea of all this? Anyway? Dink? What
do you kids want to stir up all this trouble for?
Speaker 8 (20:13):
I don't know, just for the heck of it. I
didn't want to do it, honest, Reno's the one that
thought of it.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
She said that we Reno's going to be talking out
of the other side of her mouth when I get
through with her. Now, tell me what is it your
kids are up to tonight? Well, we was going over
to caffet is and steal some more calves, I suppose, Well, yeah,
and leave this sweater so a little now could get
blamed for it. Huh.
Speaker 8 (20:36):
Well, gee, ranger, I didn't want to do it, honest,
Reno's the one that thought it all up.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
I listen. I want to tell you something. I've been
a ranger for a long time, and I can tell
you the jails are full of people that let somebody
else talk them into doing something they knew wasn't right. Yes, sir,
what time are you meeting?
Speaker 4 (20:52):
Nine?
Speaker 2 (20:52):
And I won't you say anything about this to Reno
or anyone else, do you hear, Dink?
Speaker 4 (20:56):
Yes, sir, but I'm going to feel like a stool pigeon.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
I'm leaving. How you're going to feel to night strictly
up to your dad. Come on, Dink, where do.
Speaker 4 (21:04):
You live right over there in that white house?
Speaker 2 (21:07):
All right, get moving, I'll be along in a minute. Yes, sir,
I told Dink's parents to go easy on him because
I didn't think he'd be getting into any more trouble
for a while, but I asked him to see that
he didn't leave the house or use the telephone at
all that evening. Then I took the little Schmidt girl
(21:28):
over to her aunts. By this time I was pretty
sure the best person I could get to help me
was Reno Watley's father, So about eight thirty I went
out to call on him at his ranch. Well, Hi,
they arranger, Audie, come on in. I'm glad to see you.
You know, I've been feeling pretty bad about turning old
(21:49):
Schmid in today. We've been neighbors for a long time,
but I ain't going to let anyone talk about my
kid like that shit down. Will I fix you something? No? Thanks,
mister Wadley. Where is you know? The night? Oh? She's
going to let young people's party at the church. You
know they have square dancing and games. Try to give
the kids a nice hold some time. Good idea, don't
you think? Yeah, it would be if the kids ever went.
(22:12):
What do you mean? I mean? I don't think Reno's
over there tonight, mister Wadley. You got a telephone at
the church? Oh sure, well then I think you better
find out. Okay, Hello, missus Crain, This is Buck Watley.
(22:34):
Can I speak to Reno please? Huh? Well, if she
does come in, tell her to call her dad Brondo. Well,
mister Wadley, look, Granger, would you mind tell me what
this is all about? If you know where my kid is,
I'd like to know. Is she in some kind of trouble.
I'm afraid she is, and she's heading for more. That's
(22:56):
why i came out to see you tonight about a
little matter of cattle. Theft the cattle there was your
own kid stole those calves and drove them over to
Schmid's place. Huh, what are you talking about? Simply this,
Reno and her friends thought they could put the bee
on old guts. But what in blazers would make Rena
want to do a thing like that. The whole gang
I'm out here seemed to get some kind of excitement
out of make a mischief for people. I'm afraid Reno's
(23:18):
at the root of it. Are you sure about this rangeing?
I'm pretty well convinced the worst of it is. Tonight
they're planning to steal some calves from Cafferty's and pin
the blame on Knaka Schmid's little girl. But why seems
they've got it in for her because she's shy and
doesn't have a horse of her own like the rest
of them. Do you mean those little whipper snappers to
do that just because the kid don't have a horse
to ride. Yeah, I guess without one, she couldn't be
(23:40):
one of the gang. Reno's just a kid. But I
never thought she was mean, and I just can't believe
she'd take anything that didn't belong to her. Well, I
heard you tell Schmidt this morning that seeing's believing. Yes, Well,
then I think you better come along with me tonight.
What do you say, eh? I think maybe i'd better.
(24:04):
Wadley and I got the Kaffts a little before nine
and staked out behind an old shed not far from
the crawd. We'd warned Cafferty's to let the kids go
through with it, just to be sure we've caught them
without anybody getting hurt. We hadn't been there too long
before we heard him coming. There they are, that's rain
of all right here? Hey, Jan you and my hold horse,
(24:28):
