issue that you may have through the course of the program.
We're going to start things off with mont County Sheriff
Todd Forbes, gonna get an update on the officer involved
shooting from Saturday evening.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Good morning, Sheriff, how are you.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Good morning, Michael Jordan great?

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Okay, good well.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Before we get into the details here, deputies, everybody, Okay.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
Yes, I want to say we're lucky, but rather I
would say we were. Our training and our preparedness has
once made that possible for a while a little bit
of luck. But yeah, we're blessed to have have all
of our folks intact.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Okay, good good Mont County Sheriff Todd Forbes is with
us and now sheriff if you could. This happened on
ed Dunroad a little bit after midnight Saturday.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Break down the facts for us.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
Yeah, so we were dispatched to a call a domestic
violent situation. I went to report of some shots fired.
So for our arrival there, we determined that a victim
from that crime, a female had been was a victim
of the gunshot wound, had pled the apartment in question

(02:02):
and got to a safe location and another apartment within
the same building. Uh So, upon our the begin our
investigation officers arrived and went to speak to the suspect
of that incident. And upon arriving there to the front door,
they were they were they encountered with such back too

(02:23):
as armed at that time and brandishing the weapon. Fortunately,
our officers were able to retreat a little bit, get
a little bit of cover, barked clear verbal commands, tried
to de escalate the situation a few minutes of that
was not being very effective as far as de escalating situation.

(02:45):
Within a couple of minutes, the suspect came outside onto
the porch of the residents and open fire on our officers.
Of course, our officers responded with with gunfire as well,
so there was a barrage of shots back and forth
for a few seconds. Once the suspect finally went in,

(03:06):
ending the threat to our officers, we were willing then
evacuate some folks from the apartment building and in secure
the situation and you know, later able to go in
and take custody other suspect.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Any idea how many shots were fired.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
That's still part of what's being investigated right now. So
a lot of what I'm gonna say, I though that
people get pressured in it sometimes without getting all the information.
But there's some things we just don't know this tom
and that's one of those things that's still under investigation.
You know, we'll try to get that information out when.

Speaker 5 (03:40):
We have it.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
What was the suspect hit.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
The suspect was hit. In fact, he is currently at
the hospital. I'm not sure of his condition, but he is.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
Alive this morning, okay, And the suspect is this somebody
lies there. Probably can't release any names or anything, but
just generally is as somebody who's known the police.

Speaker 4 (04:08):
I don't I don't think that's fair. I don't particularly
know this individual. I don't know if that speaks volumes
for our whole department. So that's that's an issue that
I don't think I can give a clear answer, and
I'm not sure the answer could be honest.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Okay, okay, good deal.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Now, how many apartments are in this complex in this building?

Speaker 4 (04:26):
I believe six?

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Okay, So generally speaking, I guess, you know, deputies kind
of had a twofold mission to neutralize the threat and
then ensure the safety of those five other residences.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Of course, of course, and I want to say along
with our deputies, we, of course we need to do
a little bit of assistance on this turned into a
pretty big crime scene in a pretty big event. We
really appreciate the help that we got from the Western
Say Police, the Morgantown Police Department, the Western Graham as well.
Everybody came and assisted. It took it took efforts by

(05:05):
everybody that secured the scene. It was. It was a
very tumultuous situation and we came out of it as
well as we could and I'm really proud of how
everybody responded in the situation.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
And now who's investigating this.

Speaker 4 (05:23):
This is the Bontangay County Shaffund investigation. Our detectives have
been working on this tirelessly since about twelve thirty Saturday
has got a lot of moving parts, as you can imagine,
so we're we're taking the slow We're just making sure
we get everything right and you know, hopefully we'll get
some more interests to you in the coming days.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Okay, good deal, mont County Sheriff Todd Forbes. Sheriff Forbes,
certainly glad that everyone's safe and congratulations on a job
well done.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
Thank you, sir, and I will definitely convey that message
to the people to deserve it absolutely.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Thank you very much. I appreciate that. Have a good day,
Sheriff you Sube, good morning, huh. Take care. It is
nine to twelve.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Wrapping up with mont County Sheriff Todd Forbes the latest
on the officer involved shooting on ed Dunn Road from
Saturday evening, and of course we'll keep you posted as
we get updates on that incident in the near future.
Right now, some clouds and twenty eight degrees. When we
come back, We're going to endeavor to catch up with

(06:30):
John Bowers, athletic director over at Morgantown High School, and
coach Seawan Buyser, along with some members of the Quad
A state champion Morgantown High School football team.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
It's coming up next on Talk of the.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Town AM fourteen forty FM oneh four point five WAJR.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Join the conversation at one eight hundred and seven sixty
five eight two fivey five.

Speaker 6 (07:09):
This is the Talk of the Town.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
A good Monday morning, partly cloudy, currently twenty four degrees
in Morgantown. A Metro Newszaki Weather says yet another blast
of winter is headed our way, but it looks like
the northern part of the state will be spared this
time around, as the last time it looks like the
southern part of the state was spared when we picked

(07:32):
up about four inches. Looks like the tables will be turned.
Of course, we'll keep an eye on that situation and
keep you updated. Right now, West Virginia five to one
one is reporting a crash Smithtown Road and southern Galloway Lane,
and the first responders have just cleaned up another accident

(07:53):
at green Back Road and the Kingwood Pike. So hey,
keep it between the ditches if you don't mind. You know,
there's a lot of talk about the Caribbean boat strikes.
I'd like to address that.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Now.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
We're going to catch up with some members of the
Morgantown High School football team coming up in just a moment.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
A text line that number three four talk at three four.
And certainly there's a lot of talk about the rules
of engagement and war crimes and things like that when
it comes to the Caribbean boat strikes. Now, I think
a couple of important things to recognize here is that
when it comes to drugs flowing out of the Caribbean,

(08:37):
certainly they go all over the world. But you know what,
drugs are illegal no matter where you are in the world.
I guess we can't say that, can't make that blanket
statement any longer. However, I think what we can say
is that there's a lot of talk about a lack
of due process, so on and so forth. But you know,

(09:00):
this has been a pattern of behavior that has gone
on for decades, and over that course of decades that
not only has that behavior escalated in terms of volume,
but also the lethality of the substances that are being
smuggled is increasing exponentially. Of course, we see the evidence

(09:24):
of that on our streets, and we hear it in
the news just about every time we especially when you
get a press release, for example, from the US Attorney
of the Northern District of the state. If you were
to look at their case load in the High Density
Drug Task Force that is operated out of that office,

(09:47):
look at some of those numbers, you might be very,
very surprised. Now, I think we can all agree that
the text line is starting to open up that number
three four talk three four and the Texter says, maybe
there's something more going on than just drugs being shipped in.

(10:10):
National security might not want to get people riled up.
For the past few years, intelligence agencies have been looking
for missing nuclear materials. Now, I think we're getting.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Across a lot of different subjects there, but just to
keep it where we are here in terms of the
Caribbean boat strikes, I think that what is happening now
is certainly helping our country as well as the entire world.
When things happen across the world, a lot of times,

(10:44):
the first thing that you'll hear is that the United
States doesn't do.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Enough to help our world partners.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
And I think that not only are we helping our
world partners in this endeavor, but you know what, we're
also helping our neighbors. We're helping our country. And in
addition to that, I think it's important to point out
that under these current circumstances, the cartels and the cartel

(11:14):
leaders are worried more about their own survival than they
are about getting their product into America or maybe human
trafficking or trafficking of any kind.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
And I think that that is an.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
Unexpected windfall of these constant Caribbean boat strikes. And you
know what, you and that trust me, there are a
lot of things, a lot of things, more than more
than I could mention during an hour of this program.
More more things upset me about the current administration than don't. However,

(11:56):
this current situation is helping the world world, it's helping
our country, and it's helping our neighbors, and I think
it is it. I think we have to recognize maybe
that not everyone has an objective point of view here,
and we're taking maybe a situation that has been fought

(12:19):
for decades in terms of just mountains of dangerous substances
coming into our country, and now something is being done
about it, and it's being done right at the tip
of the spear, and it's not being done in some
hearing room in Washington, d C. Where we agree to

(12:39):
send two hundred billion dollars to another government to help
them deal with whatever type of situations that we're calling
the root causes of anything. Now is the time, And
I just I don't understand why we have to be

(13:02):
why we have to treat this differently than any other situation.
When you take a look at a single tap, double tap, Look,
they're carrying poison into our country. We have no idea
what is going on in those boats or on the water.

(13:22):
But what we do know is we've seen the death
toll six figures every year for at least the last
five years. The families, you know, we've had families on
this program with talking about what about Lauren's wish and

(13:43):
all those organizations that work hard to do the good
out there. And now we have a government that's willing
to take decisive action to decrease the flow. And believe
it or not, there are lawmakers on both sides of
the aisle that aren't willing to recognize or see the

(14:05):
good and want to immediately go to press the panic button.
Has to be bad. We must prosecute and people have
to resign. It's not always the answer, that's for sure. Oh,
the text line three four talk three to four. Morgantown, Mohegans.
They pick up their first state championship in twenty years

(14:30):
over the weekend, do it with a twenty eight to
twenty one win over Martinsburg. And of course, this was
a big game on a couple of different fronts. Number One,
there was a thirty four to six decision earlier in
the regular season that that was a decisive victory Martinsburg

(14:52):
had over Morgantown. However, at the time Morgantown missing a
few key players Mattox Twick quarterback and defensive back. He
was a little bit hobbled during that contest and Martinsburg
able to come out with a thirty four to six win. Now,
of course, the championship, the champion chip tilt, the championship

(15:15):
tilt on Friday, that.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Certainly was an exciting one.

Speaker 3 (15:19):
And if we have an opportunity to talk with Mattix Twig,
we're going to talk with him about the cramping situation
that he was dealing with and because certainly that was
a very important part of that contest. We've got program
director Kyle wigs with say, good morning, Kyle, good morning.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
All right, Well, you were on the TV call of
that game. Weren't you which one? Morgan Tel?

Speaker 7 (15:47):
No?

Speaker 2 (15:47):
Actually I wasn't. Okay, oh I was. I was thinking
of Claytel.

Speaker 8 (15:50):
Yeah, I was on TV for Klaytel that Morgantown game.
The four A game is the only one I wasn't
involved in in terms of calling. So I had a
chance to the first half from the field, which was awesome.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
I bet it was.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
Now talk a little bit about that second half when
Twig is battling cramps.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
Yeah, Morgantown started to falter a little bit.

Speaker 8 (16:11):
Yeah, I mean again, it's just a situation where you know,
he had to come out a little bit, and he
played as much on defense as he had all season long, too,
and made a very very significant impact on that game
defensively and just a great two way player. But you're right,
he did have to come out for a period of
time in the second half. But Morgantown was running the

(16:35):
football effectively. The entire afternoon and obviously made some big
plays in the past game, and it came down there
to the end where quite frankly, Martinsburg just didn't manage
the clock very well and Morgantown was the recipient of that.
But you know, it was It's been fascinating to watch

(16:56):
coach Sean Buiser and this staff build this program. I
mean they've they've literally they've improved their win total every season,
every single year.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
How shocked were you to see that the game end
like that with clock Missman.

Speaker 8 (17:09):
Yeah, it was disappointing. I mean, you know, again, you
can't really put it on the players. That's a that's
a situation. You know again, that Martinsburg coaching staff is
one UH state title after state title after state title.
But it's a situation there where they're very rarely put
in that In that situation. I'm sure they practice it,
I'm sure they rep it. I'm sure they have two

(17:31):
minute drill practices, but they're very rarely in that situation
because they hadn't lost since, you know, since early September,
and they've blowed for the most part, they blow teams out,
So I think it was just a situation where you know,
they got themselves into and was a little bit uncomfortable,

(17:52):
and but yeah, it was, it was. It was disappointing
for the young man with the way it ended, but
you certainly can't put that on his shoulders because collectively,
the most interesting thing to me was the time they
let off the clock after they stopped Morgantown on third
down and didn't use that time out and let Morgantown
run the clock all the way down before they punted.

(18:13):
I mean, there's forty extra seconds that went wasted there.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
On the other side of the equation, you've got Maddix Twig.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
He's only a sophomore talk about his future.

Speaker 8 (18:23):
Yeah, they were. Somebody was we were on the sidelines
and somebody was talking about effect that he just got
his driver's license last week. Really, so he's just he's
sixteen years old. And again physically, as you know, he's
got all the physical tools and he just put everything
together this year offensively and defensively. And you know, they

(18:45):
picked their spots to use him defensively for most of
the season because that's a lot of wear and tear
on an individual. But he played a lot defensively in
the playoffs. He played a lot defensively in that game
on Friday and was clearly the best player on the field.
And you know, we'll find out. Metro News Player of
the Year ballots were due last night at five o'clock

(19:08):
or seven o'clock, so they were due Sunday evening. So
I think he's going to be prominent on many of
the voters' ballots for the Metro News Player of the Year.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
Okay, good deal.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
Well, Kyle, really do appreciate your time. Thanks all right,
thank you, sir.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
Okay, Coming up next, we're going to visit with some
members of the Morgantown High School football team, and head
coach Sean Biser will do that after the Metro News break.

Speaker 6 (19:42):
Now back to the Talk of the town.

Speaker 3 (19:46):
Good Monday morning, nine thirty four, partly cloudy and twenty
four in the University City. On the phone, we've got
the head coach of the Morgantown Mohegan football team, Shawn Buiser. Sean,
congratulations on your state championship, first one in twenty years.

Speaker 5 (20:04):
Great work, Thank you very much, appreciate you having us
one this morning. You know, been a pretty hectic weekend,
that's for sure.

Speaker 3 (20:11):
Oh, I'm sure it has, but you know, talk about
the celebration.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
Oh yeah, you know, it's just been fantastic obviously, you know,
right after the game, everybody was just overcome with emotion, excited,
and then you know, we had a PEP rally here
this morning, which was really great for our kids and
just fantastic here in Morgantown High School.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
You know, since you've come here from Kaiser, you have
steadily improved each and every season. Now a state championship winner.
Talk a little bit about that journey and what you've
done over that period of time.

Speaker 5 (20:46):
Yeah, you know, I mean, really the big thing is
just each year we've challenged our kids to improve the program,
and our seniors. I said this before, the each class
of seniors has just kind of left the program in
a better position than it was before. It all starts
in the wait room for us. You know, that's the
first thing we did was put a unified strength conditioning
program in and then just try to increase the number
of kids and interest in football. And we've just done

(21:08):
that each year, and you know, just to work our
assistant coaches put in trying to improve each year individually
as coaches and to help our players and it's just
been a building process and you know, it just all
came together this year.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
Now, take us inside what was happening on the sidelines
there in the second half, when you know, things were
starting to look a little dicey there with Mattox Twig
suffering some cramps and Morgantown was having a difficult time
moving the ball without Twig.

Speaker 5 (21:39):
Yeah, you know, we were talking about that a little
bit earlier. I was like, you know, we didn't come
in with a plan B. It was it was all over,
you know, all all or nothing, and so you know,
we worked on some other packages, but we just kind
of relied on our defense and our special teams to
make plays for us. And we figured if we could
hang in and burn some clock, we have a chance
to keep the lead. And that's what happened.

Speaker 3 (22:00):
You know, in high school football, Maddox isn't going to
come in your office and say, hey, coach, I'm declaring
for the draft early. So you've got Twig for another
two years. He's only a sophomore. Talk about that, because
you know you've got kind of a feeno there.

Speaker 5 (22:17):
Yeah, he's pretty good. I don't want to say too much.
His headles always standing here with us right now. But
he's a pretty good ball player for sure. That's maybe
the understatement of the year. You know, he comes in
and works hard. And here's the biggest thing. He's a
great team player. He just wants to win, and he
helps to push his teammates. And you know, honestly, I
think he really ever cares who gets the glory or whatever.
He just wants to make sure we win. And that's

(22:38):
the biggest quality about him.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
Absolutely.

Speaker 3 (22:40):
Well, Hey, congratulations to you and your team bringing a
state championship back to Morgantown first time in twenty years.
What was it like to do it against Martinsburg?

Speaker 5 (22:53):
You know, I don't think we ever really worried about
who we were going to play. We just knew that
that was our goal was to get there. And and
we we have a big thing where we don't talk
about really winning. We just talk about doing what it
takes to win. And uh, we never really worried about
the opponent. We just worried about it being us. Just
it was always about us doing what we needed to do.
And uh, obviously, you know, going against those guys though,

(23:15):
is there there They've been the standard in high school
football in the state of West Virginia and to be
able to go up and uh, you know, knock those
guys off was huge for our program and huge for
our program moving forward as well.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
Have you thought about next season yet at all?

Speaker 4 (23:31):
I do?

Speaker 5 (23:32):
You know. The very next day I started talking about
and writing down notes to myself what I needed to do.
It's just kind of how it works. And uh, you know,
I don't know any other way, another way to do it, honestly,
So are good. We're enjoying this, but I'm also also
already planning for next year.

Speaker 2 (23:45):
Well, tell me what are your areas of improvement in
your mind?

Speaker 5 (23:50):
Uh, you mean what we need to improve on for
next year?

Speaker 2 (23:52):
Yes?

Speaker 5 (23:52):
Or oh, oh, you know, I think we need to
to even open up our offense even more than what
we did this year. I think that's going to help
us and uh, you know, those that's one area defensively,
you know, it's just all about seeing our personnel and
seeing what we have coming back and what we what
we need to improve on. There's always something to improve on,
you know. I think being more consistent in every phase

(24:13):
that would be one area I think that would would
make us stronger next year.

Speaker 3 (24:17):
And then the last thing, talk about winning it like
you did while on the last play mistaken spike on
a fourth down.

Speaker 5 (24:26):
Yeah, we don't really worry about that. I mean, we
we had built up a lead and that was kind
of what we had talked about. We need to get
the lead and then and then control of the game.
And I think that's what we did. And you know,
our defense played lights out. They could have they could
have scored, but our defense kept coming up with big
plays and kept them in bounds and did did what
we needed to do. And uh, you know, everything else
is on them that had nothing to do with us.
So you know, we were just glad our kids executed.

Speaker 9 (24:49):
The way we drew it up.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
Okay, now you got any players standing by there that
are just falling over each other to talk?

Speaker 9 (24:57):
I do.

Speaker 5 (24:57):
I've got four guys that have Carter Cooper, I have
Maddix Twig, Calton Blunt, and Chase Traviser in here with us.
So I have two seniors and two underclassmen in here.

Speaker 3 (25:06):
Okay, all right, pass the phone to whoever you like,
just let me know who has it.

Speaker 5 (25:11):
All right, this is I'm gonna go with Carter Cooper first,
and he's standing here right next to me. So here's Carter.

Speaker 2 (25:16):
Okay, Hey, good morning, Carter.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
Glad that you're with us and glad that you could
cap off your Morgantown football career with a state championship.

Speaker 2 (25:24):
How does it feel.

Speaker 7 (25:26):
It feels amazing. I mean to take the field with
my brothers one last time into cap it off of
the state championship. I mean, it's an unreal feeling.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
What about your future?

Speaker 7 (25:38):
Yeah, I'm going to continue to play football at the
next level.

Speaker 3 (25:42):
Okay, Any any announcements you want to make here this morning.

Speaker 9 (25:50):
I don't think so.

Speaker 7 (25:51):
Yeah, I don't know. I'm still a deciding way in
my options.

Speaker 3 (25:53):
Okay, all right, well Carter, congratulations.

Speaker 2 (25:57):
If you don't mind pass.

Speaker 7 (25:59):
That phone on alrighty, I'm passing it to Kelton Boynt.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
Okay, all right, hey, good morning Calton. Glad that you're
with us. Talk about winning that national or that state championship.

Speaker 5 (26:13):
Please, it's definitely a great feeling, and especially as the
singer's great way to go out.

Speaker 2 (26:19):
So it's a season absolutely.

Speaker 3 (26:21):
Okay, well, great, great, I'll tell you what. Don't have
time to get to everybody, but congratulations to you guys.
Congratulations to coach Buisier state champions at the Quad A level.
Great work and thank you for coming on.

Speaker 2 (26:39):
Really do appreciate it. Thank you very much, absolutely absolutely
you guys take care.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
Of course, they had the big assembly in the gymnasium
this morning to recognize the Quad A state champions And
when we come back, we're gonna just pose a couple
of questions to the Voice of the Mohegans Wilson. It's
coming up next. It's nine forty one on Talk of
the Town. AM fourteen forty f m one oh four
point five w AJR.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
We are talking about your town. Now back to the
Talk of the Town.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
But good Monday morning.

Speaker 3 (27:23):
It is nine forty five partner, cloudy, twenty four degrees
in Morgantown. Welcome back to the program. On the phone,
we've got the Voice of the Mohegans, Dave Wilson. Of course,
Morgantown wins the Quad A state championship twenty eight to twenty.

Speaker 2 (27:39):
One over Martinsburg. Good morning, Dave, how you doing.

Speaker 9 (27:43):
Good morning, Mike doing pretty well, buddy.

Speaker 2 (27:45):
Oh good, good to hear from you now, Dave.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
I guess what are your takeaways after that championship win?

Speaker 9 (27:53):
You know, I tell you we watch this team. John
halberd Or and I watch this team all year kind
of grow and develop. And Week one against Parkersburg, you
saw a team with a ton of potential. Obviously we
knew Mattox Twig was going to be a good quarterback.
I don't think we realized all the way back in
Week one how good the defense could be. And we
knew there was a middle portion of the schedule there

(28:15):
where you had trips to Spring Mills, a trip to
Martinsburg in Wheeling Park, all just boom boom boom right
in a row. And they won two of those three games,
and I won. The lost was at Martinsburg. They were
beat up that day. And after that three game stretch,
John and I kind of looked at each other and went,
this team has a chance to be special. And I

(28:35):
know Twig gets a lot of attention and he should.
He's a very good quarterback. But there were a lot
of pieces in place. You just talked to Carter Cooper
where it was Isaiah Thompson's a locke at Calton Blunt
stepping up that big offensive line. But that defense obviously
was a championship caliber defense, and I don't think maybe
that unit gets enough credit for what it did. It

(28:56):
was impressive all season long held opponents too about, you know,
twelve thirteen points a game this year, and this was
obviously as good of a Morgantown football team as I've
seen in a long time.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
I had that defense on my list to ask you
about because I heard you and halbrid are talking specifically
about their ability to swarm to the ball and make tackles.

Speaker 9 (29:17):
Yeah, nobody tried to do too much the defensive line.
With Zavon Shipman and Chase Travis up front anchoring that line,
they took on lineman and that allowed linebackers to move around.
With That's Reese Well's, Kane Williams, Brooks King, they were
able to move around, and when one guy got to
the football, there was suddenly two, three, four guys there

(29:39):
on the football as well. And this is probably the
best secondary we've seen as well from Morgantown in several years.
And a lot of those same guys you know in
the back end, Carter Cooper, Coulton, Blant, Maddox Twigg, who
is an excellent safety as well, really did an outstanding job.
I think a lot of that defensive unit and they
played with a kind of a meanness, that old school

(29:59):
kind of meanness, Mike, that you got to have to
play football. So you know, I think the defense gets
a lot of credit. Certainly the offense led by Twig
and all those other pieces that were in there as well.
Obviously a complete team where you don't want to stay championship.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
Boy, it makes me smile to hear you use the
word meanness like that.

Speaker 9 (30:17):
No, No, and I mean that in the best way.
And that starts at the top. You know, Sean Buyser
sets a standard and he expects those guys to meet
that standard, and he kind of brings that attitude, and
his coaching staff has that attitude, and those players picked
up on that personality this year and really embodied all that.
The weight room, the work, the standard, and you know

(30:38):
it paid off.

Speaker 3 (30:38):
Hey, you know what, I want to pick your brain
about Buyser here, because the first thing when I had
him on the air this morning, the first thing that
he brought up was that they made the weight room
a priority. Talk about that and the importance of it,
because you can't talk about that without talking about that
big offensive line.

Speaker 9 (30:58):
Oh yeah, that big off of line was a key
part in the work in the weight room that takes,
that takes years to really develop, because that's an attitude
and that's a mindset. Because when you're in there in
July and nobody's watching, are you putting in the work
that it's going to take to beat of Martinsburg? Martinsburg
is Huntington High is Spring Mills is University. Is they're

(31:21):
putting in that type of work, are you going to
be in there putting in that same type of work.
It took Sean Biser a couple of years, I think,
to really install his off season program. Not just that,
but the attitude that it takes to really again meet
his standards and achieve that level of success that Morgantown

(31:42):
was able to achieve this year. That's all a credit
to the weight room, to the work in you know,
July and in June when nobody's paying attention, and you
know it pays off there in the first weekend of
December when you're taking on a team that had won,
had beaten Morgantown. I think fourteen straight times is the
number a half of my head Mike playoffs in regular season.

(32:04):
So it had been a while when need kind of
beaten the Bulldogs.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
When you take a look at a player like Maddox Twig,
what's his trajectory in your mind?

Speaker 9 (32:15):
As far as he wants to go, that's his trajectory, Mike.
He's only a sophomore. He picked up another offer after
the championship game from Jacksonville State. He's got one from
Marshall already. He's going to have a ton of offers
this season when he goes to camps and coaches are
able to really look at him. He's got the physical traits.
He's going to continue to develop his football IQ, the

(32:38):
way he processes information. His trajectory is as absolutely as
far as he wants to go.

Speaker 3 (32:44):
Now, I listened to your call of the game, and
then I listened to it again when I came in Saturday.
I'm speaking specifically about the final play, but yeah, go
through that with us.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
Walk us through that final play. What happened?

Speaker 9 (33:01):
Well, I'll tell you you know that play. Look, it's
the end of the state championship game. Martinsburg's driving down
the field, no timeouts left. They spike the ball, they
get inside Morgantown's what twenty are They inside the fifteen
yard line and they spike the ball on first down,
run a play on second down, so now it's third down.

(33:21):
There's an incomplete pass, so now it's third down, about
seventeen seconds to go in the ball game, and call
a quarterback run, which Morgantown snuffed out immediately. Alex Harris
makes a great tackle out on the edge. Times ticking,
there's no timeouts left, times ticking, and in the chaos
of the moment, the quarterback takes the snap, tried to

(33:42):
spike the ball, and I think the entire coaching staff
over when Martinsburg just lost track of what down it was.
That was fourth down. Morgantown gets the turnover on downs,
kneels on it, and wins the championship. But you know what,
credit the Morgantown defense again for keeping Martinsburg out of
the end of it. They were hitting Boston Todd. They
were able to keep them out of the end zone,

(34:03):
and it was going to be tough to score in
that situation, whether they run a play there or not.
But like Sean Buiser said, they were able to build
a lead, which is what you got to do against
Martinsburg because Martinsburg will adjust in the second half, and
it did and you know they were nearly able to
pull the comeback off, just ran out of time.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Can the Mohegans repeat you're asking me today today?

Speaker 9 (34:27):
You know what, we'll see how the you know guys
are going to graduate. We'll see how the weight room
program goes. But you know, with Maddix Twig back next year,
you know you gotta like their chances of being right
in the mix? Agan, how about how's that for a
non answer?

Speaker 3 (34:42):
I love it. That's great, that's great. Dave Wilson, voice
of the Mohegans and of course co host of Metro
News talk Line. Thank you very much for your time today.

Speaker 9 (34:51):
Dave, absolutely, Mike appreciate it.

Morgantown Mohegans on their state championship win over Martinsburg, their
first one in twenty years. And this news out of
Glenville just in the last few minutes, but Glenville State

(35:51):
has Glenville State University has hired the son of Bandits
coach at WVU U Jake Casteele. Well, the Bandits coach
at WVU is Jeff Casteele, and the Pioneers have now
hired Jake Casteel as their head football coach. Jake had

(36:12):
been working on the sidelines at WVU under his father.

Mountaineer football team. So congratulations to Jake Castile, now the
new head football coach at Glenville State University. Coming up next,

(37:01):
in that situation happen, And certainly we appreciate the work
of the deputies and definitely glad no one hurt in
that weekend incident. Everybody make it a great Monday. Metro
