(00:22):
the Weekly Mac, your ultimate sourcefor the juiciest fast food news. I'm
your host, Mac Davies, andWe've got a jam packed show for you
today, filled with exciting updates fromyour favorite fast food chains. Let's start
with some big news from McDonald's.The Golden Arches once poured significant marketing dollars
into salads, but since twenty twenty, greens have been off the menu.

(00:44):
This shift reflects a change in consumerpreferences and the company's focus on its core
offerings. Joe Erlinger, the presidentof McDonald's USA, explained in a June
interview at The Wall Street Journal's annualGlobal Food Forum, if people really want
salads from McDonald's, we will gladlyrelaunched salads. But what our experience has
proven is that's not what the consumer'slooking for from McDonald's. They're looking for

(01:07):
great French fries. They're looking fora five dollars meal deal. They're looking
for a hot, fresh sandwich, and so that's what we're going to continue
to provide them. McDonald's had beenserving salads for decades prior to the pandemic.
These leafy options made it possible forsome to eat at the chain while
watching their diets. As one dietblogger noted, the salads were the only

(01:29):
half healthy item I could eat atMcDonald's. For others, it may have
been more of a way to feellike they were eating healthy even if they
weren't. However, in twenty eighteen, salads became more of a liability than
a draw. That year, hundredsof people were sickened with an intestinal illness
caused by consuming contaminated food or water. The CDC identified McDonald's salads as one

(01:52):
likely source of these infections. Duringthe outbreak, the chain stopped selling its
salads at three thousand restaurants as aprecautionary men When the COVID pandemic hit in
twenty twenty, restaurants facing labor shortagesentangled supply chains slim down their menus to
focus on their most popular items.McDonald's removed salads from national menus to help

(02:13):
simplify restaurant operations. The strategy paidoff with sales ballooning as the chain came
up with ways to update and markettheir core items. But while salads are
out, a cheesy, smokey burgeris making a comeback. The smoky BLT
quarter pounder with cheese will soon reappearon McDonald's menus nationwide. This everyone's favorite
sandwich features a one hundred percent freshbeef quarter pounder patty, two slices of

(02:38):
melty American cheese, three half stripsof thick cut applewood smoked bacon, three
fresh roma tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and a special smoky BLT sauce, all
on a toasted sesame seed bun.The sauce might spur some questions, but
McDonald's USA menu spotter provides some insight. The smooth and creamy BLT sauce is

(03:00):
season to perfection with paprika, parsley, and black pepper. Get ready to
experience a sweet and tangy, savoryand garlicy sauce that has a lingering smokiness.
For those with heartier appetites, there'salso the cheese and smoky BLT double
quarter pounder, featuring two patties insteadof one, For dessert lovers, McDonald's

(03:21):
is introducing a new Mcflurry flavor KitcatBanana Split. This frozen treat combines the
restaurant's signature vanilla soft serve with realbanana, strawberry clusters and pieces of crunchy
Kitcat wafer bars. The limited timedessert will be available at participating locations nationwide
starting July tenth, while supplies last. Coffee enthusiasts in Canada have reason to

(03:44):
celebrate two. McDonald's Canada is nowoffering its Macafe Premium Roast coffee for just
one dollar plus tax for a smallsize. Elisa Buitikofer, McDonald's Canada's Chief
marketing officer, stated, we striveto be a brand for ever ever and
understand how important it is to provideaffordable options to our guests every day.

(04:04):
For those who prefer a larger caffeineboost, medium large and extra large sizes
are also available for an upcharge oftwenty five cents per size. More in
a moment. Now, let's takea virtual trip to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba,

(04:29):
where the best McDonald's in the worldmight be located. A TikToker and
US Coast Guard member stationed at Gitmo, decided to give the food a try.
She ordered a spicy chicken sandwich,French fries, and surprisingly wings.
Yes, the McDonald's in Guantanamo Baysells wings packaged in a twenty piece McNugget
box. The TikToker reported that theysmell really fire and rated them a perfect

(04:53):
ten out of ten. She alsonoted that the sandwich and fries were so
much better than they are in theUnited States. Switching gears to wiener Schnitzel,
Did you know this California based fastfood chain doesn't actually serve wiener schnitzel.
Traditionallyener schnitzel is a thin cut ofveal that's breaded and fried, not
a hot dog at all. TheWiener part of the name is actually the

(05:16):
German way of saying from Vienna, referring to the food's Austrian origins. So
why is wiener Schnitzel named after anAustrian dish it never really planned to serve.
The story goes back to the nineteenfifties, when the chain's founder,
John Gallardi, was working for GlenBell, the future founder of Taco Bell.
Gallardi wanted to open his own restaurantchain, and Bell agreed to help

(05:39):
as long as it didn't compete withhis growing taco empire, so Gallardi picked
hot dogs. When it came timeto choose a name, Gallardi was struggling
during a dinner with Glenn Bell andhis wife, Martha. Martha mentioned a
recipe for wiener Schnitzel she had seenin a cookbook earlier that day. It's
got wiener in it, which isanother word for frankfurter, she reportedly reasoned.

(06:00):
Despite initial skepticism, Gallardi thought theunusual name might pique people's curiosity,
so we went with it. Interestingly, the restaurants were originally called Der Wiener
Schnitzel, which isn't actually grammatically correctin German, but Gallardi like the sound
of it. Despite the very Germansounding name, the original menu was still

(06:20):
all American, featuring hot dogs fromday one. In a twist of irony,
Viener Schnitzel briefly added chicken schnitzel sandwichesto its menu in twenty seventeen,
announcing it would be serving the foodit was named for. However, this
namesake menu item may not have beena smashed success with fast food lover's palettes.

(06:42):
In twenty twenty four, there's notrace of Schnitzel remaining on the Viener
Schnitzel menu. Lastly, let's talkabout Taco Bell's latest innovative promotion. The
chain is giving fans a taste ofearly retirement with the Cantenas. This pop
up retirement community in San Diego willfeature a aerobics classes, pickleball tournaments,
and early dinners showcasing Taco Bell's bestmeals. Taylor Montgomery, Taco Bell's US

(07:08):
Chief marketing officer, explained the concept. There's a common misconception that retirement unlocks
the life you've been waiting for,and while that may be true for some,
we don't think you should have towait to live the life you're craving.
The Cantina's Early Retirement community, justlike our brand, represents a place
where all generations can come together tolive their moss however they want. The

(07:31):
Cantenas will open on August seventeenth andeighteen in San Diego, California. It
will be open exclusively to Taco BellRewards members who can snag day passes or
a full weekend membership starting on Julysixteenth. A full weekend membership will be
available for one hundred and fifty dollarsand includes overnight accommodations for the ticket holder
and their guest with full access toamenities, recreation, dining, and entertainment.

(07:55):
Day passes will be available for fiftydollars per day, providing access to
the grounds, record creation, dining, and entertainment from eight am to eight
pm each day. That's all forthis week's fast food roundup. From McDonald's
menu shakeups to Wiener Schnitzel's quirky naminghistory and Taco Bell's retirement community, the
fast food world never ceases to surpriseand delight us. The Weekly Mac is
