Speaker 1 (00:01):
The news, opinions, commentary, and interviews. You need to start
your day, and you're listening to the West Carol Morning Show.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Wednesday morning, twenty seventh day of August. I'm West Thanks
for joining me. It's Dragon Con Eve. The convention officially
starts tomorrow and I will be there tomorrow through Monday.
Got an interview lined up over the weekend, John Boyega
from Star Wars. Excited about chatting with him, looking forward
(00:34):
to I haven't seen him since Star Wars celebration years ago.
Looking forward to seeing him and having a chat. And
the Dragon Con pregame show with my other Star Wars
themed interviews. It was a very Star Wars heavy show
this year, with stars from the TV shows and then
(00:55):
the animated TV shows as well, and I guess also
into the film. Sam Whitwer, Katie Sackoff, Diana Lee, and
Esanto are interviews of Star Wars alum and we'll add
another too. I guess it'll be our postgame show for
dragon Con. But excited about the chance to hang out
with John a little bit at the convention and talk
(01:18):
about what he's been doing since Star Wars, because you
know that trilogy's done, what's next, what's going on. There's
another movie coming, Willie. We'll talk about some of those things.
Our coverage of dragon Con powered by Columbus State University's
Coca Cola Space Science Center, where you can learn the
science behind the fiction, the connections between science and science fiction,
(01:42):
and all of that fun stuff. So there you go,
and I appreciate them sponsoring our coverage as always, and
not only dragon Con pregame show podcast where you get
this podcast, Made of Stars podcast where you get this podcast.
Both of them have some good science and science fiction
stuff and they're waiting for you. And all the past
(02:02):
episodes of the dragon Con Pregame Show all just sitting
there waiting for you, some good stuff to carry you
into the weekend. Because you know, I'm gonna go to
Dragonon and I'm just being honest with you. I'll be
there and i won't be doing this particular show while
I'm there, got it, That's what I'll be doing. I'll
do one more I'll do a Thursday show that'll be
(02:22):
at my kick into the weekend, the holiday weekend, and
then I'll be back on Tuesday to do a show
for you. And that's what we'll do. And then next
week is a little bit of a and we'll have
some programming notes, if you will, on that next week.
But I'm having a surgery next week, and it's one
of those things where they're gonna be tinkering around inside
(02:46):
my throat, so I don't know. I don't know what
my voice is going to sound like for a week
or so. So I'll be back as soon as I can,
but i'll be back after labor Day and then i'll
talk more about out with the surgery and all that stuff.
But I'll definitely have a few days off that week
after labor Day. I'll get a few shows in though,
(03:07):
a little post Dragon con coverage for you, including probably
some conversation with John Boyega. The surgery itself, it's a surgery.
Like they say when people say, oh, it's a minor surgery,
don't worry about it. Minor surgeries or surgery is done
on other people. This is they say, it's a minor surgery.
(03:28):
I believe it, I think so I'm confident with my surgeon.
I'm confident with what they're doing. My nervous part of
my nerves in the nervous part of it for me
is that they're going to be in in you know,
where I make my money. I'm a professional speaker, That's
what I do. And if they're in there, you know,
moving things around and around the vocal cords is you know,
(03:50):
it makes you a little uneasy. If you're a professional
marksman and they're doing surgery on your trigger finger, you know,
you get a little nervous. Hey, more on that next week.
I'm okay, I'll be all right, Everything will be fine.
Life will be better when this is done for me.
So there's that, all right. I want to now talk
(04:13):
about Oh my gosh, it happened, the engagement Taylor Swift
and Travis Kelcey. I heard from someone yesterday. I said, oh,
you said this wasn't ever gonna happen. I said, no,
quite the contrary, I said it would happen. I never
had any doubt in my mind. The only thing that
surprises me about them is that they didn't do it
sooner or like that. I think they would have done
it at the Super Bowl had the Chiefs won. I
(04:34):
think they would have done it. I think that would
have been the thing on the field after the game,
Confetti everywhere, decimated Eagles team. They just couldn't do it
after it was a decimated Chiefs team, because the Eagles
absolutely destroyed them. I find no joy in saying those
words as a fan of the New York Football Giants.
(04:55):
I find no joy in any of the Saquon Barkley story. None,
none of that. But the consolation is that, oh, yeah,
the Chiefs can lose in the Super Bowl and there's
not really much the refs can do when you blow
them off the field. I digress. I think it's entirely
possible that Cracker Barrel maybe paid them to get incay,
(05:19):
because that really shifted the conversation rapidly, didn't it. I mean,
the Cracker Barrel thing is still the thing. They did
a pop up store, and so was it in New York.
I don't know somewhere that had a pop up store
and that didn't go well. Cracker Barrel is taking on water,
and at some point, while you're taking on water, you
just have to accept the fact that you need to
take the boat back and get another. Go get the
(05:42):
other boat. You got a new boat. The new boat's
got a hole in it. Quit trying to patch it
on the go. Just go back and get in the
old boat. Just admit it. We messed up. We're sorry,
we were wrong. We apologize. Coke had to do that.
And remember when Coke did that, and they said, now
it's time for Coke Classic and we'll go back to
(06:05):
the old one. And then they just phased out new Coke.
Some people miss it, some people actually liked it. I
know some weirdos that actually it wasn't that bad. It
wasn't Coke though. That was the difference. And then they
go back and then they say, well, now it's kind
And then now I guess Trump's already been saying, hey,
they're going to bring real sugar back to Coke, so
(06:27):
they're really going to go back to the old formula.
Dear Cracker Barrel, just go back to Cracker Bear. Just
just do it. Bring back Uncle Herschel, just do it.
Everybody will be fine. You've drawn a lot of extra
attention to all of your shenanigans that you've been doing
things that people didn't know about Cracker Bear. All of
a sudden they're paying attention. All they wanted to do
(06:49):
is eat some pancakes and some of those hash brown
casserole dishes. And but as I said, you don't have
to eat it. You don't have to go there, but
I know they're happy because now this Taylor Swift Travis
Kelcey engagement has really taken over all the oxygen from
the headlines, hasn't it, at least in that level. There's
(07:12):
stuff going on. We got crime in cities and presidents
trying to fix stuff, trying to take over things. You
got people pretending, oh, we can't we can't get excited
about him coming in. He can't do this. He's taking
over our cities and doing things. And I think this
is what we kind of addressed back at the beginning,
and I've been excited to see that people are starting
(07:33):
to have this perspective on all of this is this
was the trap. I told you back at the beginning.
There was more going on to what was going on
in DC than just we're going to clean up DC.
It's great that they're cleaning up DC. The reports there
that people do feel safer, the police there saying, hey,
we got some help. We're cleaning things up, taking a
(07:56):
lot of criminals off the streets. We've taken some illegal
guns off the streets. It's a good day. And that's
what they say. That's what the police that's the reports.
You can go to law enforcement sometimes and actually get
an update. God forbid you listen to law enforcement. God
forbid anyway. So then you got other cities where I
(08:19):
could fix that, I could do it, we could clean
it up. And people are saying, no, no, no, we don't
do that. You can't come in and do that. Why
it's this conversation of like, why would you oppose cleaning
up crime? And this is the trap that I feel
like they've they've lured them into, and this is what's
(08:39):
going on because, you know, cleaning up the streets and
and and justice. It was something that the left was for.
If you remember, we went through this whole thing back
during the Clinton administration, right one hundred thousand police officers
were hired and prisons built in the three strikes law.
(09:02):
Remember that that was all during a Democrat presidency. And
Bill Clinton somebody that even though he doesn't have the
respect and admiration that he once had, a lot of
people in the middle kind of remember those you know,
not the bad stuff, not all the stuff with Monica Lewinsky,
(09:24):
but they look back to that period. You go back
to Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich as the speaker of the House,
and you know, they were able to work together. That
was a time. You know, it didn't mean they always
got along, but they were able to work together. Some
things got done. There was still some controversy some of
(09:45):
the things from then still you know, oh, PBS, that
was going on back then. Remember Newt Gingrich said, why
is Sesame Street getting money from us? When you know
they still enough tickle Meolmo dolls to pay for PBS forever,
like they could cover that easily. That was the thing then,
and of course it's still going on now. Some of
(10:06):
this stuff just never dies. It's like the goonies. Right. So, anyway,
we have this we're going to fix crime coming now
from Trump and on the Republican side, and you got Democrats, Hey,
you can't do that. Why would you do that? Stay
out of our cities. You can't come in here and
(10:26):
fix this. We can't fix it. It would look bad
if you came in and fixed it. And then you
have a lot of people, you have a lot of
people that have been lifelong Democrat supporters that live in
these cities and they're going, wait, I thought we were
against crime. Since when are we pro crime? It doesn't
(10:46):
make any sense. Why would you not want to clean
up the crime really doesn't make any sense. It's this
absence of common sense on specific issues. If Trump and
RFK say we're going to get some of the dies
out of the foods that aren't great for the kids,
(11:08):
We're gonna do that. Now, this is something that you
would think would have sweeping approval, you know, other than
you know, some of the cereal companies are like, it's
going to cost us more or whatever. We'd like our
fruit loops to look different colors. And it's really not that.
It's really not that important, is it not. If there
could be a negative side effect, isn't it better to
(11:31):
you know, put in some beet juice or whatever than
red fifty or whatever it. So, so the question becomes, well,
of course, why are people, Ah, Trump's doing something positive,
He's doing something to help our kids that are Now
I know, we could take it a step farther right,
(11:52):
and we could say, hey, let's stop using our snap
programs to buy foods that have these things in them.
God forbid, just for saying that. You know, you're asking
for trouble because you got all these big companies and go, hey,
wait a minute, we need that snap money. What are
you talking about? Can't mess with that, You can't know.
(12:18):
We'll work on backing off some of the chemicals. I
like the fact also too, if you've noticed every headline
about the change and the colors, you know they're removing
these deadly toxic chemicals from the food. What does that say,
by the way, what does that say about our food
(12:39):
and Drug administration that they've been allowing them to have
these toxic, deadly chemicals in the foods? And then now
because this is this is my take on this as
a parent. If they say we're gonna we're gonna in
the next three months or whatever, we're gonna get rid
of all of the toxic dies, these deadly toxic dyes
(13:01):
that are in your kid's foods or our foods. I
know they say kids because they're trying to. It's like
when anybody in Columbus, Georgia runs for office, it doesn't
matter what you're running for. If you just put it's
for the kids, people are gonna vote for you. It's
an automatic. So you say you invoke the children. So
when people say this is in three months, they're gonna
(13:24):
get rid of these deadly toxic chemicals from our foods. Well,
what about the next three months where kids are eating them.
I mean, if you're calling them deadly toxic foods, shouldn't
that be immediate. It's like saying the kids are outside
playing with knives. You know, tomorrow we're not gonna let
them do that. Right, they're out there, you know, spinning
(13:45):
a revolver on their finger in the yard. It's loaded,
but tomorrow will take the bullets out. I digress. Nobody
can give him credit for that. Nobody's going to give
him credit for trying to clean up the streets. They
want the credit for clean up, but they're not cleaning
up the streets. It works better. Their methodology of running
the government works better when there's chaos. They need chaos
(14:07):
in the streets. They don't need it cleaned up. And
if somebody comes in and says we're gonna have law
and order, that's where the common sense part of it
comes in. Hey, we want law and order everyone in there.
That's the role of government. It's the whole role. The
role of government isn't to get your snap benefits so
that you can go by toxic, deadly food. That's not
(14:28):
the That's what some people think the role of government
is it's not. I know, it becomes that, and look,
we've got a system where that has to be there
for a lot of Americans. It just has to be.
It's the reality. But that was never the intention. You
think our founders could have ever envisioned a time where
there's a lot. They couldn't have envisioned. There's a lot.
(14:51):
Those people were just begging, like praying, can we please
have a child? As we're getting here and we're trying
to we've got our farms and we want a child.
They couldn't imagine, Eh, this child's going to be inconvenient.
We don't want this one, not right now, maybe later
in life, but not. They couldn't have imagined that. None
of them could have imagined that. But they definitely couldn't
(15:15):
have imagined that. You mean, so we're going to have
X number of Americans at any given moment, like this
is how they're going to get their all their food,
This is how they're going to eat for how long?
Like for the foreseeable future. Okay, they couldn't have imagined that.
That's not what they wanted. It's not what they envisioned.
That's not how they saw it government. You know, protect
(15:38):
private property, protect citizens, that's it. That's what it was
supposed to be. Protect us from foreign invaders. That's it.
And believe me when people like to say, you know
what about in the early days when Americans came here
and settled and they took the land from other people,
that's that's a reason. Remembering and studying history is reason
(16:00):
to say, hey, borders are important. Just saying so a
lot of Americans now in these high crime cities. Sorry,
sometimes I just say the things that people don't want
to say. And I'm on one of those kicks today.
It's just coming out and that's the reality. But as
far as crime in these cities, as far as the
(16:23):
crime goes, and people saying we can't, this is what
a lot of people were wanting want. They want to
be able to live in a city where they can
take a train to work, they can take a car
to work and not worry about getting carjacked. They don't
want to get robbed. They don't want to leave their
house and come back and the house has been burgled.
(16:44):
Nobody wants to be burgled. Who wants that? I can't
think of a single person who wants to be burgled.
I do know people who've repeatedly been burgled and they
still vote for the leadership that's in the town they
live in, not local, but they'll still vote for the
leadership there because they're looking out for us. Are they
(17:05):
couldn't somebody come in and maybe clean things up for you?
Wouldn't that be better off? And most of the citizens
are saying yes, that would be great. It's the leadership
and the party that is saying no, we don't need
that because it would make them look bad, and it
would make them look bad to those voters. Today's show
brought to you by Columbus State Universities Coca Cola Space
(17:26):
Science Center, inspiring and educating the youth and future STEM
leaders and STEM career holders that really of all ages.
I mean, they do it for school age kids as
school age kids visit the Coca Cola Space Science Center,
but they also do it through their university programs where
you can learn engineering, astronomy, physics, and the careers in
(17:52):
space and STEM fields are booming right now, and you
can learn more about maybe getting your degree on their
webs site CCSSC dot org. While you're there, also check
out some of their upcoming programs. They've got this incredible
collaboration that they do with the Schwob School of Music
(18:13):
from Columbus State University called Music under the Dome. It's
unlike any concert experience that you can get anywhere else.
It's one of those things that when you're watching it
in Columbus, Georgia, you think, is this really in Columbus, Georgia.
I mean, this is a major city attraction that happens
right here in Columbus inside the planetarium at the Coca
(18:35):
Cola Space Science Center and the new season of Music
under the Dome. Check out upcoming dates for the shows,
and also check out when the next Astronomy Night's coming up.
Where you can get outside. Sometimes you do it at
the Cocola Space Science Center. Sometimes you get outside somewhere
outside the city lights. You don't want any light interference,
(18:56):
and you can do that as well upcoming Astronomy Night events.
Also on their website, it's CCSSC dot org. As Sean
Crusan says, Charlie Charlie SamSam Charlie dot org, I just
remind you that it stands for Coca Cola Space Science
Center CCSSC dot org. Today's show brought to you by
(19:16):
Overhead Door Company of Columbus. For all of your garage
door needs, commercial or residential. Maybe you have regular maintenance
that it's time for. It's always good to get maintenance
on anything that has parts that move and have electronics.
The folks at Overhead Door Company of Columbus can take
care of squaring that away for you, and while they're there,
(19:39):
you can always ask them questions about some of the
maybe cosmetic changes you'd like to make to your garage door.
Maybe your curb appeal isn't quite what you want it
to be and you need some repair work done to
the outside door. Maybe you need a brand new garage
door completely. Maybe it's making a noise when your garage
door opens and closes. Maybe it's some sort of insulation
(20:00):
an issue that you've got with colder, warmer weather. Sometimes
that stuff gets in and it's inconvenient. Maybe you're looking
at a situation where you'd like to add a screen
door to your garage door system that you can put
down and you can use your garage space as a
sort of outdoor but indoor. You know, if you like
to work on your own cars in there, or maybe
(20:20):
you just want a little man cavid. You'd like to
be able to open the door up and not invite
all the insects in. They can do that for you
as well, and again they do after hours calls. There's
nothing worse than that thought of having your car trapped
inside your garage and your garage door won't open and
you need somebody to come help, and they do those
as well. Seven oh sixty five eight forty five hundred
(20:42):
seven oh six three five eight forty five hundred o
dccolumbus dot com more West Carol Morning Show right after
the break, not even labored yet. It's almost Labor Day weekend.
It's not Labor Day just yet, but we do already
(21:06):
have we know where the Spirit Halloween is going to be.
I don't think it's open yet. It wasn't open at
last check, but it's coming and it's in the Joanne location.
In many cities around that's where they jumped into the
Joeanne fabric abandoned stores and Halloween is coming up fast.
It happens you get passed and the Halloween stuff is
(21:28):
in the stores that's already taken over, and it doesn't
it's it's very quick you get past labor Day and
then all of a sudden, you're like, wow, we're rolling
right on into spooky season. One of the people that's
jumped on this very quickly are the folks at Oreo
at Nabisco, and they've got Halloween themed Oreo cookies. The
(21:51):
limited edition cookies two layers of cream, bright green and
orange sandwich between the classic Oreo cookies. Each cookie comes
with the Halloween theme design, vampires, cats, cauldrons. The snacks
available at Target and Walmart stores while supplies last. Check
(22:11):
your local listings. I don't know, I haven't seen them
in the store myself, but I assume that they're in there.
I just don't spend a lot of time on the cookiao.
I know you look at me and you think sure,
but I really don't spend a lot of time on
the cookiao. The world of video games leveling up more
and more as women getting more and more involved. Nearly
(22:31):
half of all gamers around the world are now women,
and mobile and casual games are driving the trend. The
shift is pushing developers to rethink the way they design
games and tell the stories inside the games. Moving forward,
be on the lookout for more complex female characters and
adventure games, and fewer shallow over sexualized female characters that
(22:52):
have been featured in so many games in the past.
We're looking at you. Lowercroft still a great character, and
I like those movies. I like the first one, at
least I don't really remember much about the second one.
But Americans work hard. They put in an average of
eighteen hundred and five hours per year, which is four
hundred and seventy hours more per year than Germans. I
(23:13):
don't know why this particular study is picking on the Germans,
but that's what it says. Some number crunches at wallet
hub wanted to break things down with even more detail
and go state by state, so they looked at ten factors,
average number of hours people work, number of people with
multiple jobs, and they figure out where Americans work the hardest,
and according to wallet Hub, North Dakota is the hardest
(23:38):
working state in America, followed by Alaska, South Dakota, Texas, Hawaii, Virginia,
New Hampshire, Wyoming, Maryland, and Nebraska. That's the top ten.
Michigan is actually at the bottom of their list as
the state where people work the least hard. Georgia did
not crack the top ten, but it is sitting at
(24:01):
number twelve in Alabama is at number twenty, So we
can feel good about the fact that, you know, we
didn't crack the top ten, but you know that's a
pretty good top top half right for both just outside
the top ten for Georgia, So that's not bad. I mean,
that's all right, all right. So Serena Williams is getting
(24:25):
some grief about selling golp ones. Have you seen this.
It's Serena Williams and she announced that she's lost thirty
one pounds and she says that it is injectable weight
loss drugs that have helped her make the transformation. Since then,
(24:46):
the backlash has come on social media and from some celebrities.
Actress Jamila Jamil had a lengthy message on social media
where she called out Serena Williams, saying she's now so
telling GLP ones. The thing I feel most uncomfortable about
here is that celebrities have access to doctors that most
(25:07):
others don't have access to. These miracle and quotes. Weight
loss drugs come at a price. If things go wrong
and you don't have a billion dollars to fix it,
that's why I don't like celebrities pushing drugs with such
drastic documented side effects. That is one take. It's not
the only person who has this take. A number of
(25:29):
people are basically saying, hey, look, she's an athlete and
an influencer, and she's basically saying you have to take
medication to be healthy and have a certain standard of
beauty and how that's disappointing. So look, I don't blame
Serena Williams for seeing this as an opportunity to do
(25:50):
this as an endorsement for a product. I just don't
know if she was expecting the backlash. I don't know
if anyone prepped her for it. But it is what
it is, and I understand people's reaction. I don't necessarily
disagree with it, but I hope she was prepared, because
you know, this isn't cracker barrel, but it's not a
(26:14):
good look in general for a pro athlete, somebody who
has been an outstanding shape for their career and knows
the formula, knows how to get in shape and lose
weight without taking a drug. But I hope she was ready.
That'll do it for this Wednesday edition of the show.
(26:36):
Thanks to our sponsors and patrons. Thank you for listening.

a weird connection that's already there. It's built into it.
