The news, opinions, commentary, and interviews you need to start
your day. You're listening to The West Carrol Morning Show.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Tuesday morning, twenty ninth day of July. I'm Wes. Thanks
for joining me. Quick reminder dragon Con Pregame Show and
dragon Con Pregame Show podcast coming soon. We're less than
a month away from dragon Con getting started downtown Atlanta.
I mean we're weeks weeks away. You haven't planned your

(00:33):
dragon Con experience, now's the time to do it. Might
have a host hotel or two pop up if you
want to stay in one of those, as some cancellations
have inevitably happened as we get closer to the actual
Labor Day weekend. Otherwise, there are some spillover hotels where
you can book your weekend. We're just planned for a
day at the convention, even if it's just getting one

(00:56):
day memberships and you go up and you hang out
for the day and a lot of time people like
to go up on Saturday. That's the day of the parade.
It's one of the largest parades that happens in the
Southeast period all year, definitely the largest of its kind.
You know, this isn't Saint Patrick's Day. This isn't Marty Gras.

(01:21):
This is not specifically associated with a holiday. It's just
celebrating fandoms. It's fun, it's a great day. It's a
great way to kick off a Saturday. If you go
to dragon Con on Saturday and spend the day there
at the convention, hanging out and checking out everything that's
going on all weekend long, you can squeeze it all
in on a Saturday. That's what you can do.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
There'll be some guests that will only be there other
days and you might miss an opportunity to see them
or some of the panels, and in that case, you
need to be there the whole weekend. But DragonCon dot
org for a list of all of the guests will
be attending, all the events going on, and we'll have
the dragon Con Pregame Show to fill you in on
every thing you need to know for this year's convention.

(02:02):
Anything new, anything different, We'll let you know what's going on.
Dragon Con Pregame Show and dragon Con Pregame Show Podcast
powered by Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center.
Only guess I can confirm I told you I might
have another one to confirm today, not just yet, not
so fast. Maybe tomorrow soon though, because the interview may

(02:25):
be happening very soon. But I can only confirm at
this point. Katie Sackoff Battlestar Galactica, the Star Wars franchise
was a Longmire. Yep, she was on that show. My
dad loves some Longmire. Never gotten into I need to
do Longmire. Apparently I was told if you like Justified,

(02:45):
you'll like Longmire, So I guess I should do that.
So confirmed, we'll have her on the show on the
Dragon Con pregame show plus past episodes waiting for you
wherever you listen to your podcast. Okay, So one of
the things that came up often on my trip to Australia.
You go overseas and people will ask you questions, especially

(03:08):
if we have at the time a president who is
I don't know. It takes a beating from the media.
I mentioned before, I was in Australia during the Clinton
Lewinsky scandal. A lot of people ask questions about that.
They wanted to know, They want to know what was
going on there, what the deal was, some explanation of

(03:29):
what was what. We had an election that was coming
up on one of my trips, and I remember being
asked by many where I thought things were going to go.
Notoriously bad at predicting elections. I'm not good at it
at all. I'm being honest. Although this past election I
was able to predict the exact turnout as far as

(03:53):
exact scoring, if you will, as far as the electoral
votes that were or one got it exactly right. I
named every state, first time I've ever done that. I'm
notoriously bad at predicting. But although one of my trips
I was asked about who I thought the next president
would be. I said George W. Bush. That happened, That

(04:13):
was one that I predicted, But that was the gap
from that George W. Bush and then his re election
to this most recent election. Haven't been good at predicting.
The others just been wrong, wrong, wrong, But anyway, got
them right this time. Maybe I should stop. I had
really stopped, but I thought, you know, for the purposes

(04:33):
of the show, I should at least make some sort
of a prediction, And I laid out what I thought
the electoral votes would be, and that's where we got to.
That's where things played out. So anyway, the point is,
you go overseas when there is a president that is
maybe questionable, you get people that will ask questions. And

(04:55):
when I say questionable, but based on what they hear
from the media. And I've told you that while I
was in Australia on this most recent trip, just a
few weeks ago I was there, there were people who
would ask questions, some curious, Hey, this stuff we're hearing
about him can't be true, is it. I think, well,

(05:17):
a lot of what we hear about him is not true.
A lot of it is way off the mark. So
I don't know exactly what you've heard, but here's what
I can tell you, and then fill in the blanks.
And occasionally people would ask about things as they pertaining
to tariffs, Oh my gosh, he's giving this country or
that country a beating, and he's picking on this place

(05:39):
or that place. And all I could say to that
was you got to give it time to play out,
because weeks ago we didn't really have any answers yet.
You know, when I left for that trip, we didn't
have answers. Seemed like things were going to start playing
out as we got into the summer, really into the days,

(06:00):
but we didn't really know where things were headed at
the time. In fact, and I'm going to get to
an example of this, but there were predictions that the
economy would blow up by Independence day, that Trump's moves
towards tariffs and his attempts to negotiate deals with other
countries was going to tank us. We'd be in a

(06:22):
recession by Independence Day, and that didn't happen. I think
it was really largely coming from a place of people
wanting to see him fail and hoping badly that he
would fail, and that didn't happen. And all that I
could tell people when they would ask me about things
or take little shots and jabs. One person even told

(06:43):
me something about, as our boys were enjoying some ice cream,
well you better have it now because it'll be you
won't be able to afford ice cream by the end
of the year with those tariffs, which didn't make any sense.
But it was clearly just an attempt at trying to
make a little comment and take a jack or whatever.
I don't know. I don't take that stuff personally. I

(07:04):
know I could if I let myself get into this
place of like you're messing with me. Because dot dot
dot but I think it was just really a boy.
You know your president's going to ruin things, and you
just let it go because there's no real benefit. There's
an old adage about you know, you don't live here,

(07:26):
you don't vote, so honestly, you can have whatever opinion.
I mean, you can have whatever opinion you want if
you live here. But I care more about the opinions
of people that live here, no offense, people that are
I should say, people who can vote here. I care
more about their opinions really than just about everybody else,
especially people that don't live here at all. But obviously,

(07:49):
why would a tariff on ice cream even be a fact?
Like we're not importing a lot of ice cream, it's
not a big import thing, or not just shipping in
ice that ice cream from you know, Scandinavia. We don't
do that. I mean, I'm sure there are some fabulous

(08:10):
ice creams from Scandony, but I don't know that. You know,
you're gonna hit me more if you go, boy that
Irish whiskey you like, ah might want to start drinking
some American whiskey, which I think is kind of the
point of some of these tariffs. But anyway, so now
we're getting a little bit of answers on things because

(08:30):
the economy didn't blow up by independence date. It's actually
doing fine. It's actually doing pretty well, showing more signs
of improvement. And now we've had a few of these
tariff deals made and yesterday the announcement, well I guess
it kind of came over the weekend that it was
getting done. But a deal with Europe, a deal with
the UK, after a deal with Japan that's just gone through,

(08:57):
I would say some progress has been made. And to
the folks that were hoping this economy was going to
blow up and that this president was going to fail,
and you know what, anything can still happen, right, anything
can happen. But these are the kinds of deals, these
trade deals are the very things that Trump came in

(09:17):
and intended to get done.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
See.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
The argument here is that we've been raked over the coals.
We shipped something somewhere and there's these crazy tariffs and
fees and things that we have to pay. So why
isn't everybody else paying their fair share? And I had
people say, well, he bullied countries, that's what he was doing.
He was pushing people around the things that he did
to Canada and the things that he was doing to

(09:44):
I guess, I don't know what he was doing to Australia.
Was he doing something to Australia. I had people there
a saying, oh my gosh, the things he's done to
us here, and I'm not really schooled on that. I
didn't realize that that was going on. But ultimately, the
goal is to get a deal that's fair for everybody.

(10:05):
And that was the point that I made to everyone. Look,
when this all settles, he can threaten, oh, I'm gonna,
you know, put a three hundred percent tariff on your
stuff coming in. But in the end, when an agreement
gets made and trade gets resolved, this is what his
intention was. Make it fair for everybody involved. And when

(10:29):
two sides can negotiate, shake hands, sign the papers, and
move forward, and it's beneficial to both of them to
do that. Well, how dared American president look out for
the interests of the American people. It's not something that
we've had for a while. It's nice to have that
and know that there are those interests being looked out for.

(10:52):
And I think everybody should want their leaders to look
out for their interests makes sense, doesn't it. I know
you want to feel like, oh, well, we're looking out
for the interests of the whole world. Well, yeah, that's
what these deals end up doing. I'm no terifologist. This

(11:13):
isn't my specific area of expertise. So it's not like
I can say, look, here are the specific implications of
each of these percentage points. All that I can tell
you is we've got some deals that have now been made,
and the ink is dry, and we move on. And

(11:34):
right now we have a president already ready to go
on to the next one. Let's get another trade deal made.
Let's make sure that everybody involved is getting a fair
shake in all this. And I can admit I'm not
an expert on this. I don't know everything about it.
I don't. You probably don't either, just being honest, I mean,
maybe you do. Maybe this is your field as you're listening,

(11:57):
But chances are, of all the people that are listening,
probably not a lot of people that are experts in this.
And if you're just regurgitating whatever you hear, positive or
negative from the news, I mean, that's all it is,
is a regurgitation. You can't sit back and say, hey boy,
this is what I know. I learned everything about tariffs

(12:20):
in three days, and I can tell you everything. And
I've been doing it now for six months. I can
tell you everything about it. Now, let's jump over to
what's just happened with the Club Random podcast. Bill Maher
has admitted another time for Bill Maher to say, you
know what, let me swallow my pride a little bit

(12:41):
and admit I was wrong about something with Donald Trump.
And on his Club Random podcast, he said that he
was wrong about tariffs and Donald Trump, and he says
he's got to own it because this economy right now
is thriving, and he says, just to take an example, tariffs. Now,

(13:04):
I remember that I, along with probably most people, was
saying at the beginning, oh, you know by the fourth
of July, the economy was going to be tanked by then.
And I was like, well, that seems right to me.
But that didn't happen. It could happen tomorrow. I'm just saying,
that's reality. So let's work first from the reality of that,

(13:25):
not from I just hate Donald Trump, because that's boring
and it doesn't get us anywhere, and it leads you
to dishonesty. The truth is. I don't know what his
strategy is, but look, the stock market is a record highs.
I also drive around. I don't see a country in
a depression at all. I see people just out there

(13:46):
living their lives. I would have thought, and I've got
to own it, that these tariffs were going to sink
this economy. There's an explotive in there too by this time,
and they didn't. How do we deal with that fact
because that's the fact, and that's a real reality that
people are starting to adjust to now. Most on the
left don't want to admit that, and that's become this

(14:06):
new Bill Maher that we're all still adjusting to, where
he'll say really horrible things about Trump and then sometimes
I have to go back later and go, eh, that
was wrong. I'm gonna keep saying bad stuff about him,
but about this when I was wrong, and that's that's fine.
I think that's what you should do. I've defended people

(14:28):
in politics over the years. I've defended actions and defended
things and been debt wrong about it and had to
come around and admit later that I was wrong. Thought
I had an understanding of that, and I did not.
I when and I've meant I've talked about this here
and radio, and I can tell you this. I didn't
think Trump was serious. I didn't think he was a

(14:48):
serious candidate for president. I didn't didn't think that at all.
And I really thought he was just kind of in
there to lose, you know, boost his profile. It's just
I don't want to thought. And then the closer we
got to election day and I went, he seems to
be actually trying to win, and then he did. I

(15:10):
didn't know that he could, so that it was like, well,
let's see what he can do. And then he did
some really good things. And by the way, on that
during that first presidency, our previous trip to Australia before
the most recent one, people then were saying things to
me like, man, everybody says bad things about Trump, but

(15:32):
he's doing really great things for the economy and it's
rolled over to our economy and that's a good thing.
When he does things that boost your economy, it boosts
our economy, and we're excited about it. These are people
I knew who worked in finance. These are people I
know who worked in their specific field, rotated around how

(15:56):
the economy was doing in Australia as it rolled down
from US. So, yes, we're doing pretty well right now.
And a couple of big wins here recently, now three
big wins recently when it comes to trade deals. So
I'm sure there's some more in the works. I'm sure

(16:17):
there's some more good things coming. Feels like it certainly
feels like things are starting to turn around. We're starting
to get some of that relief we've been waiting on
since COVID because we had a president right after COVID
and enduring it, really overlapping it, and he was asleep

(16:39):
at the wheel, but the people running things were hell
bent on making sure we didn't recover. I mean, this
was a we have other things to accomplish. We can't
let people get a break. We've got them down. Let's
put our foot on their throats and let's pass some
green legislation that's not happening right now now, and we're

(17:01):
actually getting an opportunity to pull out of this and
feel some positivity for once. Today's show brought to you
by Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Hey everyone, this is doctor Sean Crusin. I'm the executive
director of Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center.
I want to tell you about a very special exhibit
that we have on display the summer. It's so big
that it can't even fit in our own exhibit gallery.
It's just too many pieces. This is a collection of

(17:33):
items from the personal collection of astronaut David R.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
Scott.

Speaker 3 (17:38):
Dave Scott flew on Gemini eight with Neil Armstrong, he
flew on Apollo nine, a dress rehearsal for the moon landing,
and then most importantly perhaps he commanded Apollo fifteen, where
he became the first person to ever drive a car
on the surface of the Moon. Because Dave's brother, Tom
lived and worked here in Columbus, Georgia with our Columbus

(17:59):
Chamber of Commerce, we got to be good friends with Tom.
Tom has coordinated a very generous donation of artifacts and
memorabilia from the Scott brothers collection to us here at
Coca Cola Space Science Center. And again, that collection got
so overwhelmingly large we couldn't put it on display here.
That's why we're doing the exhibit at the Bow Bartlet Center.

(18:19):
They are open from eleven am to four pm Tuesday
through Saturday. Go down and check out this great exhibit
on display at the Bow Bartlet Center. Check out all
the other wonderful pieces of arn't work down there as well,
and then come visit us here at Columbus State University's
Coca Cola Space Science Center.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
Today's show brought to you by Overhead Door Company of Columbus.
For all of your garage door needs, commercial or residential.
Maybe you have regular maintenance that it's time for. It's
always good to get maintenance on anything that has parts
that move and have electronics. The folks at Overhead Door
Company of Columbus can take care of square in that

(18:58):
away for you, and while they're there, you can always
ask them questions about some of the maybe cosmetic changes
you'd like to make to your garage door. Maybe your
curb appeal isn't quite what you want it to be
and you need some repair work done to the outside door.
Maybe you need a brand new garage door completely. Maybe
it's making a noise when your garage door opens and closes.

(19:19):
Maybe it's some sort of insulation issue that you've got
with colder or warmer weather. Sometimes that stuff gets in
and it's inconvenient. Maybe you're looking at a situation where
you'd like to add a screen door to your garage
door system that you can put down and you can
use your garage space as a sort of outdoor but indoor.
You know, if you like to work on your own

(19:40):
cars in there, or maybe you just want a little
man cavid, you'd like to be able to open the
door up and not invite all the insects in. They
can do that for you as well, and again they
do after hours calls. There's nothing worse than that thought
of having your car trapped inside your garage and your
garage door won't open and you need somebody to come help.
They do those as well. Seven six thorty five eight

Right after the break, well, do you remember the woman
in China who moved into a retirement home in spite

(20:26):
of the fact that she was I think in her
thirties or forties. Well it's happened again. Now an Australian
woman has moved into a retirement home and she loves
her new home, loves the other residents, she enjoys the
daily activities bingo, chair yoga, morning walks. She's thirty eight.
After a long term relationship ended, she needed a place

(20:47):
to live. She stayed at an airbnb for a while,
but after visiting her aunt at a retirement community, she
fell in love with the place and decided to move in.
She says she's never been happier. She believes the slower
pace is good for her mental help, and it only
costs her about five hundred dollars a month, a fraction
of the cost of an apartment in Melbourne. She's heard

(21:10):
the criticism from her own family and others on social
media who say she's too young to live in a
retirement community, but she doesn't care. She's embraced the lifestyle
and has no plans to leave. That's got people talking,
how does it sound? Does it sound too young to
start that lifestyle? Or does it sound the exact right

(21:30):
pace for maybe the exact right person. I don't know,
but now it's happened a second time, so or at
least a second time. There may be others who've given
this a tribe, all right. Grandmothers, warm and sweet, most
of them are, and some of our fondest memories may
be growing up spent with our grandparents, well many grandparents,

(21:54):
though maybe not around anymore. I guess more aren't around
than are around. I mean, if I'm being quite literal
with my observation on this, but many people don't still
have their grandparents. I don't still have my grandparents. For example,
a company in Japan is giving people an opportunity to

(22:15):
rent grandparents. Company called Client Services, which has all sorts
of convenience services available. Convenience Services is offering something called
Okay Grandma. For about twenty three dollars an hour. You
can rent a senior woman between the ages of sixty
and ninety four to cook you a homemade meal, give

(22:36):
you life advice, or just keep you company. Some are
expert chefs, others are master housekeepers. Many are just great listeners.
Company says their life experience, warmth, and wisdom make them
irreplaceable companions. I like it. I like it. Next, we've

(22:57):
got Pepsi launching a soft drink designed to help your insides.
It's Pepsi's Prebiotic Cola and it will be available beginning
in November online only and start appearing in stores next year.
Available in two flavors, Original Cola and cherry vanilla, each
with thirty calories, five grams of cane sugar, three grams

(23:21):
of pre biotic fiber, and no artificial sweeteners. The company
says that the original cola designed to taste just like
normal pepsi. There's a number of these prebiotic and probiotic
type drinks on the market, so we'll see as Pepsi
sticks a toe into those prebiotic waters. I guess all right,

(23:45):
if you heard of the tea app for the Ladies
in your Life. Basically, it's a women only platform and
it's the number one free app on the Apple Store
right now. This allows women to anonymously share experiences and
opinions about men in their cities. Women sharing red flags

(24:09):
and green flags to rate guys and offering comments such
as describing bad date experiences or vouching for the guy
as a friend. The app let's users run background checks,
search for criminal records, and reverse search photos to make
sure that their dating app pictures are actually legit and

(24:30):
really them. So this is obviously very popular. If it's
the most downloaded app right now in the Apple Store
of the free apps, so would you use it? I
could see where it could be a valuable resource if
you are trying to get to know a guy that
maybe you want to date or whatever, and you get

(24:51):
some little bit of inside track on finding out what
they're really like from women who've encountered them. And researchers
in Spain are trying to figure care out the health
effects of moderate drinking a four year study that involves
ten thousand adults aged fifty to seventy five. During the
four years, the researchers will be providing study subjects with
free wine. The catch, though half of the participants will

(25:14):
get free wine, the other half will get nothing and
have to completely abstain from any alcohol throughout the research period.
And you don't know which group you'll be in when
you sign up. So if you like wine, you got
a fifty to fifty shot at free wine. If you
don't like wine, you got a fifty to fifty shot

(25:36):
at having a drink wine. I guess that's how that
would work. So that'll do it for this Tuesday edition
of the show. Thanks to our sponsors and patrons. Thank
you for listening. I'll catch you back here tomorrow morning.
