Speaker 1 (00:01):
Start your day with Wes. You're listening to the West
Carol Morning Show.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Friday morning, August first time, Wes. Thanks for joining me.
Here we are August. It's here, it is upon us.
Can we start counting down to Christmas? We got past
the Christmas in July Day and Leon Day and June
and all that. Now we're into August, so we can
(00:29):
start thinking. I know everybody says you got to think
about the other holidays. You gotta put a lot of
focus on Halloween and Thanksgiving and all that. But it
all just kind of dominoes just start falling down quickly.
Don't think it is August. We can celebrate at the
very least the fact that Labor Day weekend begins in August.
Labor Day itself is actually on September the first, but
(00:52):
Labor Day weekend. Dragon Con downtown Atlanta now five host hotels,
I guess, and everything you need to know about dragon
Con is coming soon to the dragon Con Pregame Show
to radio about two hundred radio stations around the state
of Georgia and surrounding states, plus the dragon Con Pregame
(01:13):
Show podcast, and you can hear past episodes of that
where you're listening to this podcast this year. I told
you already I was ready to announce one guest. I
now have a second guest that I can announce for you.
First up told you that we were adding Katie Sackoff
to the show this year. Be talking to her about
(01:34):
her time with Battlestar Galactica and Longmire, and the fact
that she's also now part of the Star Wars universe
and also from the Star Wars universe. Excited to chat
with Diana Lee and A Santo, who is the daughter
of Dan Innsanto and the goddaughter of Bruce Lee. Her
(01:58):
dad a marsh arts choreographer and actor, a legend, and
she has followed in that path and that trajectory in
her career, doing stunt choreography and doing stunts, training folks
in martial arts and an actress as well, and has
appeared in the Mandalorian and the Ahsoka series as well
(02:21):
as voicing some characters and some animation. The same character
actor actually Morgan Elsbeth is the character's name in the
Star Wars universe, and I'm excited to add her to
the list. We got some more coming soon. I'll tell
you the names once I have them, But those two
are definitely I've got interviews scheduled, and once they're scheduled,
(02:42):
I'm comfortable saying that they're going to be on the show.
As always, the Dragon Con pregame show powered by Columbus
State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center, And you can
go back and listen to past episodes of the shows
as well. You can do that as soon as you
finish today. What a great to do all weekend long,
All right, it's Friday. We begin with some positive news.
(03:06):
We'll start with PJ Woodland, who is a football player
who now plays for LSU. Grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
PJ enjoying success at LSU, but does what some athletes
do not all try to give back to the place
(03:27):
where they grew up their hometown. He was doing a
back to school drive in Hattiesburg, handed out one hundred
and fifty backpacks to kids in the area. PJ remembers
all the support he received while growing up and playing
football in high school, and for years he always wanted
to give back. Growing up, I always wanted to do
something like this. I always try to lead by example.
(03:49):
Now that I have had the community to do something
like this with my team and my guys, and we
just got it done. I mentioned this story one. It's positive.
This is something great that's happening. And I know that
this is not the first person to do something like this.
But we are in this phase now where college athletes,
(04:11):
thanks to NIL deals, name image likeness deals, are making
money off of their sports careers. Some of them go
out and buy Lamborghinis, not naming names, but some of
them do that, which is their right, it's their money.
We're in a position where this now becomes a free
market situation. If you decide I want to go buy
(04:32):
a nice sports car, drive it to Miami or whatever,
that's up to you. That's yours, or you know, girlfriend
have an accident or whatever the story might be. My
point is, this is now a college student who has
this NIL deal and is using some of the money
(04:52):
from it to give back to his community. Kudos to him,
because he could absolutely just be stockpiling it in the bank.
No one would fault him for that. He could be
using it to invest in his future, which he probably
is using some of it to do that, you would
hope so. But in this case, at the very least
he's doing something to give back to where he grew up,
and I like that. That's a nice story about another one.
(05:15):
Aunt Crocker lost his wedding ring while paddle boarding on
the Great River Owls in England, and he thought it
was gone forever. Upon realizing that his ring was missing,
Aunt actually grabbed some goggles and dove to the bottom
of the river to search. No luck. Visibility was poor.
(05:37):
Aunt didn't have enough oxygen in his lungs to do
a proper search. That's when he had to call in professionals,
and he contacted a local scuba club. Three members of
the Bedford Scuba Divers rose to the challenge and the
rescue team got into the river found the ring. Get
this in ten minutes, and of course was thrilled. I
(05:59):
didn't think they would find it, he said, so when
they did, I gave them all a hug, even though
they were soaking wet, to celebrate the successful mission, and
his family took the three divers for he will deserve
pint of beer and gave them a donation to their
scuba club. Ten minutes, guy dives down to the bottom
(06:19):
on his own, thinks I'm going to look for it.
Probably doesn't have a lot of hope and they jump
in and find it in ten minutes. Now, I don't
know if you're like me now this. I try to
just focus on the positive because this is a fun story.
But the skeptic in me is like, do one of
those guys have a wedding ring in their pocket and
they just went down and we're like, here it is.
Could you give us a very detailed description of what
(06:43):
your ring looks like? And then comes up you know
they bought one at the store. They probably would have.
I don't know how much the donation was to the
scuba club. Anyway. No, I don't want to be snarky
on this one. This is good. I like this store.
I like these positive stories. It's nice to kick off
our weekend with a little positivity. But before we can
(07:05):
really get into the weekend, let's get into the strange
and bizarre news from around the world. Like how about
this story out of Argentina. This is one of those
weird stories that I feel like we need more information,
but this is all we've got. I mean, I could
really dig into this, but I'm gonna give you just
(07:25):
kind of the overview of this twenty seventeen, and we've
all seen the Google car driving around taking pictures of houses.
You may have even had that moment where it's kind
of you see it coming into your neighborhood, or you've
heard it's going to be in your neighborhood, and maybe
you tidy a few things up outside just because you
know it's coming. Well, in twenty seventeen, the Google street
(07:49):
View car rolled through the town of Braggado, Argentina, and
at the moment that a certain man happened to be
in his own yard sunbathing nude, the car's high tech
camera has got a photo of him and published it
(08:13):
with his street address, and it ended up online for
everybody to see. The man happens to be a police officer,
says that he faced a lot of joking because of
what happened around the city and at work. It's a
small town Brigado. He decided he was going to sue
(08:33):
Google took him to court. They violated his privacy and dignity,
he said. Well, a lower court initially dismissed the case,
saying that he was responsible for not being dressed appropriately
in his own yard. Google even argued that the man's
fence was too low to expect privacy, but upon appeal,
a higher court ruled in his favor, saying that Google
(08:55):
had intruded on his private life and failed to protect
his identity. The court then awarded him thirteen thousand dollars.
Doesn't seem like much, but on principle, if you say, hey,
at least I got some satisfaction out of this something.
But this has been like an eight year saga for
(09:16):
this poor guy, and being a police officer, I would
imagine he got teased quite a bit about it. However,
they're not taking pictures in the backyard, are they. I mean,
I don't know the exact I didn't check the image.
I didn't want to do that, but I just wonder
how if he was in his front yard, what was
going on there and how that was possible? All right,
(09:39):
straight into Compton. A woman in Compton, California, a video
that she posted from her doorbell camera went viral because
she caught something really weird on it. Jessica Ortiz shared
late night footage on social media showing a strange, oddly
shaped figure walking. PA asked her home she captured the post,
(10:03):
anyone please explain what my ring just caught. I'm not tripping,
am I. Most commentators have had the same explanation. They
must be aliens. It does look a bit like an alien.
I've watched it multiple times. I'm not sure exactly what
(10:24):
I'm looking at. I'm watching it again and it definitely
looks like an alien walking past her porch. It's an
oddly shaped thing, whatever it is. I mean, I don't
know what an alien really would look like.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
But.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
That's what the consensus seems to be. Yes, it's gotta
be aliens. Some have suggested, though, that maybe it was
someone wearing a hat and carrying a bag, which would
look strange in the dark. There's an odd reflection of
something on it could be that. I don't know, but
(11:02):
it is a little freaky. I gotta be honest with you.
I don't know exactly what it is that I'm looking at,
but it's weird, and I guess it'll be a mystery
for a while unless someone actually comes forward and says, no, no, no,
that was me. I was wearing this like Pope like hat.
I don't know. It's just a weird shaped thing, and
(11:23):
I don't know how to explain what it is. So
maybe someone will come forward, all right. A toddler in
India survived a cobra attack by biting the deadly snake
to death. Two year old Govinda Kumar was playing outside
when a cobra slithered up and coiled itself around his arms.
(11:47):
Without panic, the child bit the snake as hard as
he could, eventually killing it. The boy, however, ingested some
of the snake's venom and collapsed. He was rushed to
the hospital for a treatment and survived in stable condition.
The cobra, however, dead. That's a tough kid, I don't
(12:11):
think I I mean, I guess you get in a
survival situation, there's you know, especially when you're really young.
This is a two year old as a toddler. I
don't know how big the snake was, but that's a
pretty uh, that's a pretty tough kid. That's like Chuck
Norris level legend right there. Visitors to Ohio's Cedar Point
(12:31):
Amusement Park may want to start reconsidering riding the park's
newest appropriately named attraction, Siren's Curse, The newest ride at
the thrill park, left righters stranded on the top track
about a week ago, forcing them to nervously walk down
the tracks to safety. It was the fourth time this
(12:53):
has happened since it's opening about a month ago, and
it's not your average roller coaster. Siren's Curse is the
first so called tilt coaster in the US. Features a
section of track that disconnects from its starting position, turned
ninety degrees, and then reattaches to a steep decline track. Fortunately,
no injuries were reported from any of the four malfunctions,
(13:16):
so I think I'd probably sit in that one out
for a little bit until they get all the bugs
worked out. I don't know. I don't know how I
feel about having to walk down doesn't seem fun. A
slow moving escape artist is back home in Devon, England
after a very low, sorry very slow, sixteen day adventure. Shelley,
(13:40):
a twenty year old leopard tortoise, vanished from her family's
garden on July ninth. Her owners were shocked that she
managed to get out, had no idea where she could
have gone. It's a tortoise, they didn't think she could
have gotten very far, But after sixteen days with no
signs of her, Shelley finally appeared three miles away out
the side an ice cream parlor. A farmer in the
(14:03):
area was first to notice her and thought she was
a rock until she started moving. Word of Shelley's escape
had been in the news, so the farmer got in
touch with the owners and arranged for a reunion. They
drove to the ice cream parlor to pick Shelley up,
then gave her a little ice cream before bringing her
back home. They've since reinforced the fence around the yard
so Shelley won't make any more ice cream runs. That's nice.
(14:26):
This could have been in the good news story. I mean,
it's weird, but he could have just been in her
good news store. That's a positive. I always like what
a pet gets reunited, even if it was trying to
make some kind of an escape. A family in Oklahoma
City didn't have finding a naked four hundred pound man
in their home on their Bengo card last week, but
(14:47):
they did just that. The naked burglar identified as Cory Cisco.
It's a great name. I don't like what. I don't
like being four to pound naked guy, but I like
the name. Didn't stay long because the homeowners grabbed their
guns and he bolted out the back door ran across
the yard jumped into a pond, where he stayed for
about an hour. Blake Overstreet, who owns the house, said
(15:10):
that he waited in the water very much hippopotamus like.
I think that's a cut on his size, isn't it,
dodging snakes and snapping turtles. Police eventually showed up coaxed
him out of the pond. Cisco was under the influence
you think, and has been arrested for indecent exposure and
public intoxication. I don't know what the blood alcohol level was,
(15:32):
but when you're a big fellow, I think they can usually,
you know, consume a lot before they start to show
any signs of intoxication. Pizzeria in Stouton, Wisconsin shared a
kitchen with a licensed edible marijuana vendor. What could possibly
(15:52):
go wrong? Dozens of people were sick and after they
were accidentally dosed with THHC. Yeah, after eating food from
the famous Yeti's Pizza. When the pizza rea ran out
of cooking oil, staff unknowingly used THCHC infused oil from
the shared kitchen to prepare items like pizza, garlic, bread,
and sandwiches. The contaminated food was sold over a three
(16:14):
day period, and soon after, emergency crews responded to reports
of people experiencing dizziness, anxiety, and other symptoms of TCHC intoxication.
Several sorry seven several people were hospitalized. Dozens more reported symptoms.
It actually occurred last October, but the CDC recently included
(16:35):
it in a new report. In total, eighty five people
said that they felt the effects of the TCHC after
eating at the restaurant, including children and seniors. Some even
tested positive for TC despite not knowingly consuming cannabis. The
restaurant owner cooperated with health officials closed the business immediately
after learning what happened. The CDC says they're still investigating. Now.
(17:01):
This is in Wisconsin. Cory Cisco was in Oklahoma City.
I'm guessing I don't want to be mean, but I'm
guessing Cory Cisco probably likes pizza. I mean, he was
intoxicated in some capacity. I don't know. I'm just doing
the math, but I do realize Oklahoma City, Wisconsin not
(17:24):
really close for a pizza run. Today's show brought to
you by Colomba State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center,
Inspiring and educating the youth and future STEM leaders and
STEM career holders that really of all ages. I mean
they do it for school age kids as school age
kids visit the Coca Cola Space Science Center, but they
(17:47):
also do it through their university programs where you can
learn engineering, astronomy, physics, and the careers in space and
STEM fields are booming right now. And you can learn
more about maybe getting your degree on their website CCSSC
dot org. While you're there, also check out some of
(18:09):
their upcoming programs. They've got this incredible collaboration that they
do with the Schwob School of Music from Columbus State
University called Music under the Dome. It's unlike any concert
experience that you can get anywhere else. It's one of
those things that when you're watching it in Columbus, Georgia,
you think, is this really in Columbus, Georgia. I mean,
(18:30):
this is a major city attraction that happens right here
in Columbus inside the planetarium at the Coca Cola Space
Science Center and the new season of Music under the Dome.
Check out upcoming dates for the shows and also check
out when the next Astronomy Night's coming up. Where you
(18:50):
can get outside sometimes you do it at the Co
Cola Space Science Center. Sometimes you get outside somewhere outside
the city lights. You don't want any light interference, and
you can do that as well upcoming Astronomy Night events
also on their website. It's CCSSC dot org. As Sean
Crusan says Charlie Charlie SamSam Charlie dot org, I just
(19:11):
remind you that it stands for Coca Cola Space Science
Center CCSSC dot org. Today's show brought to you by
Overhead Door Company of Columbus. For all of your garage
door needs, commercial or residential. Maybe you have regular maintenance
that it's time for. It's always good to get maintenance
(19:32):
on anything that has parts that move and have electronics.
The folks at Overhead Door Company of Columbus can take
care of squaring that away for you, and while they're there,
you can always ask them questions about some of the
maybe cosmetic changes you'd like to make to your garage door.
Maybe your curb appeal isn't quite what you want it
to be and you need some repair work done to
(19:53):
the outside door. Maybe you need a brand new garage
door completely. Maybe it's making a noise when your garage
door opens and closes. Maybe it's some sort of insulation
issue that you've got. With colder or warmer weather, sometimes
that stuff gets in and it's inconvenient. Maybe you're looking
at a situation where you'd like to add a screen
door to your garage door system that you can put
(20:16):
down and you can use your garage space as a
sort of outdoor but indoor. You know, if you like
to work on your own cars in there, or maybe
you just want a little man cavid you'd like to
be able to open the door up and not invite
all the insects in. They can do that for you
as well, and again they do after hours calls. There's
nothing worse than that thought of having your car trapped
(20:36):
inside your garage and your garage door won't open and
you need somebody to come help, And they do those
as well. Seven oh six thorty five eight forty five
hundred seven oh six three five eight forty five hundred
O dccolumbus dot com more West Carol Morning Show. Right
after the break, well, are you familiar with adult summer camps?
(21:08):
It's a thing and apparently it's really popular. People looking
for nostalgia maybe just an opportunity to go back and
relive their childhood. Maybe just looking for a chance to
get around some people who really mis gooing to camp
and I don't know, have that kind of community or whatever.
(21:29):
Different camps around the country are set up to let
people relive their childhood memories and make new friends. Many
of the camps have activities like rock climbing and water sports,
but those who are goofing off at camps say it's
mostly just a break from their stressful lives and a
way to find joy and simple shared experiences. Not for me,
(21:54):
but I sort of have. I guess in a way
we've sort of joked before that dragon Con is kind
of like adult summer camp, just for like a weekend
with some of my friends. So maybe in a way
I have that experience already. But I don't want to
get back to the you know, mosquitoes and red bugs
(22:17):
and flies and all that stuff that doesn't interest me.
I don't need to do that all right. Public toilets
can be disgusting. Let's be honest. If you've ever had
to use a public toilet, probably was a sincere like
time of going. I don't really want to do this
(22:39):
am I going to go in there? It might be awful.
Usually it is, I think, especially if you're in a
larger city, and that's usually the place where you desperately
need a toilet, right because if you're not at a
restaurant or in a hotel or something, you might need
a situation where you think, I've got to use a
public bathroom. Sometimes they're just hard to find, period. So
(23:03):
as a company called Thrown Labs that plans to make
changes to all that, they've created smart toilets designed to
be convenient and comfortable, high tech restrooms are unlocked by
a QR code, they have running water, they're free to use.
They're also monitored with a rating system, and without violating privacy.
(23:27):
The system is set up in a way that the
toilets are less likely than public toilets to be messed
up or trashed by users. Big cities where there's lots
of protesters good luck. I mean, we've seen this whole
talk about setting a police car on fire is just
sort of being a basic activity, right just to watch
(23:48):
it burn. So I would think setting a smart toilet
on fire might be something people like to watch burn.
Not that I'm trying to disparage the idea. I think
this is a great idea. I like the idea of
having monitors public toilets, not in the stalls, but you
know what I mean. A recent study found that humans
still outperform AI in one important creative task, making smart toilets.
(24:14):
Now the alternative uses task researchers. Researchers matched pairs of
humans against AI systems, asking them to think of new
uses for everyday objects. While AI showed impressive originality, the
best human ideas were still unmatched by the machines. So
(24:35):
we got that going for us, right. If you ever
wish you could eat French fries while playing games on
your brand new switch to and not ever have to
look away from the screen, well guess what. A three
D print designer created something called gamy fries. That doesn't
sound good. You put gamey in it, it doesn't sound good.
(24:58):
It's basically a joy con grip that doubles as a
holder for your fries. That's what it is. Sounds simple enough.
I don't like the name, but I like the idea.
It's shaped in the iconic red fry carton for McDonald's
and it lets you inhale the fries without letting go
of your controller. Yeah, it looks ridiculous, seems unlikely too
(25:21):
many gamers we're actually wanting such a thing. But it
seems to be a real thing in the three D
print world, and it does actually exist. So if you
can't stop playing games long enough to and I guess
you can put things besides fries in there. I suppose
does it have to be fries? I don't think so.
(25:44):
I just don't like the name Gamy fries. It doesn't
sound good. How about some forgotten websites from back in
the early two thousands. Speaking of nostalgia, this is my
kind of nostalgia. I don't need to go to summer
camp again. I don't need to deal with all of
the drama that comes from summer camp. But let's just
(26:08):
jump back to the early two thousands and remember some
of the websites that maybe you haven't heard mentioned in
a while. Remember Napster, Remember Alta Vista, or board dot
Com or MySpace GeoCities. I think we all remember GeoCities
and ask Jeeves. So some other websites, maybe they have
(26:30):
gone in the past, disappeared forever. If we're gonna mention MySpace,
we should mention friends her too, shouldn't we remember that?
That was like one of the I think that was
the OG, at least for me, it was the first one.
I remember it all all right. That'll do it for
this Friday edition of the show. Thanks to our sponsors
and Patronspatreon dot com, slash Wes Carol God bless you
