Speaker 1 (00:01):
Start your day with Wes. You're listening to the West
Carrol Morning Show.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Friday morning, thirty, first day of October. I'm Wes, thanks
for joining me. All hallow zve It's Halloween. Here we are,
final day of October and the downhill slide into really
the holidays begins really tonight. I don't know, maybe midnight.
(00:31):
I mean, do we count Halloween as part of the holidays.
I think that would be nice. We could include that
as part of the holidays. Depends on what you're doing
for Halloween. You know, if you're sacrificing cats and stuff,
that's not really a family activity. Though we covered that already,
but we had the place overseas. It was not adopting
(00:53):
black cats because they were concerned about all that, and
you know, they know their community better than I do.
I can't judge. Seems like a good plan if you
think that's going to be a problem. You know the
drill tonight it's Friday and it's Halloween, and that means
there will be probably more people on the roads, especially
(01:15):
late at night. The later you get into the into
the holiday, into the trigger treating. So you know, the drill,
you got small kids, you got kids period, somebody they
need an adult with them. I mean the big the
big kids going out. And I got nothing against the
big kids doing it. Nothing put some effort in where
(01:35):
some sort of a costume. I don't care, be six seven,
I don't care. Just something that gives the impression that
some effort went into a costume. That's all. Nothing wrong
with a cheap costume. There's nothing wrong with saving some money.
We went that route this year. You save a little money,
that's all. This is a this is a time where
(01:57):
saving money is a good thing. I mean it's always
a good thing. You should be saving money, but especially
saving money in twenty twenty five and rolling into the holidays,
that's all. You know, government shutdowns and whatnot. You know,
there's a lot going on, so especially if you're affected
by that. So here here's a deal, you know, some
(02:20):
kind of reflective something, if possible. You want some glow
sticks or good We often spend time trigger treating with
our friends Katie and Mark and their kids, and Mark
always has the glow sticks man. He's a Scout and
he and his son Andy, well their Scout family. That's
all you got to say. It's a Scout family. They're prepared.
(02:41):
They have the glow sticks or you know, it's something
to be visible, flashlights, glow sticks. You don't want your
kid dressed like a ninja running up and down the
streets in the dark. That's you know, if they're trying
to pull a ninja costume off, this isn't really going
to be the time for it. And just be aware
(03:02):
of all the cross street crossings and not getting caught
up and you know, back and forth across the street
and that kind of stuff. Just be aware of all
of it. And by all means, parents check the candy
and make sure that if there's anything in there you
want to eat. You know, there's a tax involved, there's
a parent tax. That is, you know, kids have to
expect it. They're small, they don't know. If they're kind
(03:26):
of in that mid range, they need to expect it.
If they're old enough, they're probably really kicking up a stink,
but you know, they're big enough to fight back over it.
I guess. So there's that. And then the other side
of this is the responsibility of the people driving careful
in the neighborhoods. Slow down, really really slow down. Nobody
wants an accident nobody wants to have to live with
(03:48):
that on either side. You got to be careful and
by all means, you know the drill. This is a
holiday that involves people having a beverage two at some point,
maybe not during trigger treating, but you know, later in
the night, and you know the drill. It's too easy
to get an uber or a lyft or whatever, or
(04:10):
just get a friend to go with you that's not
going to drink whatever. It is. All the precautionary things,
no fireworks after midnight, that kind of stuff. You know
the drill. We cover these things in holidays all the time,
and it's important that we remember to do our best
to look out for each other. That's all we're asking for.
That's it. That's all we're really asking for is just
(04:31):
look out for each other. I don't think that's a
lot to ask. It's a Halloween edition of our Friday Show.
So let's get into some good news first up, to
get things started, Let's go at this. I like this story.
Nineteen sixty two World War One soldiers Malcolm Alexander Neville
(04:53):
William Kirk Harley wrote two notes, stuff them in a bottle,
launched the bottle into the sea. One hundre hundred and
nine years later, that bottle resurfaced on an Australian beach,
connecting families across generations. Recently, Deborah Brown and her family
were cleaning up trash at Wharton Beach in Australia when
Deborah's daughter stumbled upon the bottle buried in the sand
(05:14):
and inside were the letters written by Malcolm and William.
Deborah Hu's Facebook to track down their descendants, sparking emotional
reunions and shared memories. Deborah connected with Herbie Neville, Malcolm's
great nephew. Herbie said he knew of his great uncle
Malcolm from stories he'd heard from his aunt, who is
now one hundred and one. She also connected with family
(05:36):
members of William. His granddaughter, Ann Turner explained that the
discovery has impacted the family in a big way. We're
all absolutely stunned. Their five grandchildren who were still alive
and said, and we're all in constant contact since it happened,
and we just can't believe it. We do very much
feel like our grandfather has reached out to us from
the great How great of a story is that? A
(05:58):
World War One era note in a bottle discovered on
a beach in Australia. Good stuff. The University of North
Carolina at Charlotte, the Brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma and
I guess I'm saying that right fraternity took on a
physical challenge to raise awareness and honor a brother who
(06:18):
lost that they lost to mental health struggles. The brothers
spent a day taking turns running a one mile loop
around campus from sunrise to sunset. In total, they covered
sixty miles. The goal was to get students talking to counselors,
to each other, to anyone who listened. The event encouraged
students to talk openly and seek support. While the fraternity
(06:40):
now starts every chapter meeting with a mental health check in,
Derek Appa, one of the runners, says, the whole point
was to bring awareness to mental health. There's a strong
stigma around college students men especially, and having openness has
been great for us as a whole. How about that?
I like it. I like it. Good for these guys. Nice.
(07:02):
It's a good way to honor a student that they
lost there at the school. All right, it is Friday,
it is time for some weird news, and we have
ourselves an animal story to get things started today. And
it's an animal story in a Spirit Halloween. And this
seems to me like the best way possible to kick off.
(07:25):
I wanted to get you a good one. It's a
Spirit Halloween and there's an animal involved, all right, that's
how we're doing this for Halloween. That's how we're rolling.
So a Spirit Halloween store, Plano, Texas. I mean, you
know the drill. They got everything you want, costumes, accessories, decorations,
a live monkey. We're in a diaper That's not in
(07:46):
every Spirit Halloween, but it was in this one. As
the scene got really out of hand, shoppers were browsing
the aisles when they suddenly spotted a diaper wearing monkey
swinging from the rafters and poles, and employees said the
monkey was in the store with its owner when it
got spooked by one of the animatronics, who hasn't experienced
(08:06):
that in a Spirit Helloween, and decided to take off.
It remained on the loose inside the store for about
thirty minutes while staff and shoppers tried to catch it.
Police were eventually called in. With the help of the
monkey's owner, used a cookie to lure the frightened primate
from the rafters. Thankfully, no one was hurt. You know,
(08:27):
I want to check the diaper. I don't know what
the animatronic was, but there could be some stuff going
on in the diaper, That's all I'm saying. I mean,
those things scare me and I'm not a monkey. Well
I'm not a monkey, that's all. Let's do another animal story.
This one's not. This is a SeaWorld. This is not
a Spirit Halloween. But it's in Florida, so that helps, right.
(08:51):
Florida woman suing SeaWorld Orlando for injury she says she
suffered when a duck flew into her face while she
was riding a roller coaster. The person in question, Hillary Martin,
she was visiting the park back in March and she
was riding the Macho Mako I think It's Macho roller
coaster when a duck suddenly flew into the coasters past
(09:11):
hit her in the face, knocking her unconscious. Martin argues
that the park failed to warn guests about the risk
of bird strikes when it should have known. The coaster's
location was near body of water, would create a zone
of danger for birds like ducks and gulls. Martin claims
the duck strike left her with permanent injuries, disfigurement, emotional trauma.
(09:33):
She's seeking fifty thousand dollars in damages. Good luck. I
wish you're the best on that one. I mean, it's
not fun. I mean you're going there to have a
good time. You just want to have a good time,
that's all you want, and then a duck hits you
(09:53):
in the face there. I feel badly for the injury.
I don't take that lightly. If I did, I would
make a joke about ducking. I'm not going to do that,
but it probably would have been helpful for her. Maybe
the sign should have said, hey, possibility of ducks. Maybe
you think about ducking. I don't know how about this story.
Thirty one year old Aaron Thompson was arrested a few
(10:15):
days ago for destroying about five hundred dollars worth of
pumpkins outside a Tampa area target. According to police, he
showed up at about one fifteen in the morning October
thirty first, and threw roughly eighty pumpkins to the ground.
Wasn't difficult for police to track Thompson down. Security called
him back to the store a few days later and
showed him surveillance video of the incident. Guards asked him
(10:37):
if he recognized the person in the footage, and he said, yeah,
that's me. He explained, unapologetically that someone had made him
angry and he took it out on the gourds. Police
were called and charged him with criminal mischief and I,
you know, I'm not sure if you know, maybe his
(10:58):
favorite band was smashing pumpkins. Maybe that would have been
a defense. I don't know, maybe not. It's not unusual
to toast a job well done unless you're in the
middle of a burglary and you stopped to do that.
A California man returned to his home to find Sabina
Blanco sitting at his dining room table sipping a glass
(11:19):
of wine after breaking into the house. Took me a
second to realize whether or not Sabina Blanco is the
type of wine it was, or if it was the
name of the person who was drinking it, but it
could have been both. The man told the thirty one
year old to leave, and after he did, the victim
called police to report the incident. The resident also reported
that his house had been rummaged through. Blanco who was
(11:41):
booked at the Santa Clara County, Maine Jail for felony
residential burglary, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor battery
on a police officer for allegedly spitting on the officer.
I wonder where he might have learned it's okay to
spit on officers. Maybe we've been seeing that in the lately.
A thirteen year old boy in New England is recovering
(12:03):
from major abdominal surgery after he swallowed nearly one hundred
high powered magnets. The boy reportedly swallowed the very powerful
magnets about a week earlier and started to experience stomach pain.
I wonder why Doctors discovered the magnets had formed four
chains inside his intestines, causing serious damage. Surgeons had to
remove parts of intestines along with the magnets. He spent
(12:27):
eight days in the hospital and has been recovering. New
Zealand banned the sale of these magnets back in twenty thirteen,
warning that they pose a risk to children. Serious risted
children at that but the boy was able to purchase
them online thanks to Timu Timu Timu I don't know,
I don't use it. Years ago, Jill and I were
(12:48):
talking about the fact that when you make a purchase
for something that you're going to use every single day
and for many hours every single day, it's worth making
sure that you purchase something that's high quality and it's
something that's going to last for a really long time.
And one of those things that we focused on was
bed sheets and bedding, because you spend at least a
(13:12):
third of every day in your bed eight hours a
day or so, maybe six to seven. It depends on
how much you sleep, but you might spend about eight
hours a day in the bed, and you want the
sheets to feel nice. You want them to last a
really long time, because that's the other thing. When you
get a nice set of sheets, you want them to
last a really long time. Well, let's talk about Cozy Earth.
(13:35):
The folks at Cozy Earth have their bamboo sheet sets.
They're cooling, they're comfortable, and they have an unparalleled softness
and they've got thousands of five star reviews for their products.
And not only are we talking about bed sheets, we're
also talking about other bedding. We're talking about pajamas. Yes,
(13:57):
we're in that time of year where people want to
get their pajamas so they can have their Christmas pajama
photos maybe for their Christmas cards. And these are also
high quality, comfortable pajamas. So when you talk about getting
something that's going to last a long time and be
comfortable your pajamas, you'll spend a lot of time in.
And then also the bedding and bedsheets and things. So

you can always ask them questions about some of the
main maybe cosmetic changes you'd like to make to your

want it to be and you need some repair work
(19:08):
done to the outside door. Maybe you need a brand
new garage door completely. Maybe it's making a noise when
your garage door opens and closes. Maybe it's some sort
of insulation issue that you've got with colder or warmer weather,
sometimes that stuff gets in and it's inconvenient. Maybe you're
looking at a situation where you'd like to add a
screen door to your garage door system that you can
(19:30):
put down and you can use your garage space as
a sort of outdoor but indoor. You know, if you
like to work on your own cars in there, or
maybe you just want a little man cavid you'd like
to be able to open the door up and not
invite all the insects in. They can do that for
you as well, and again they do after hours calls.
There's nothing worse than that thought of having your car
(19:51):
trapped inside your garage and your garage door won't open
and you need somebody to come help, and they do
those as well. Seven six three five eight forty five

O dccolumbus dot com more West Carol Morning Show right
after the break well. Dictionary dot com has declared six' Seven,
(20:24):
yes that's six' seven the twenty twenty five word of
the year because of the surge and searches and social
media usage beginning in the summer of. This year the
slang term born from a TikTok fueld meme and a
viral song loosely signaling so so or maybe this maybe
(20:47):
that offer and delivered with a palm's. Up gesture dictionary
dot com said the choice reflects how language, evolves online
noting that six seven may have a little, concrete meaning
yet carries cultural weight as a symbol of a generational in. Group,
HUMOR now i suspect there will be some six to
(21:10):
seven's trigger treating. This evening it's just a hunch you're
going to See some my boys needed a last minute
put Together for wednesday night church and they were encouraged to.
Our costumes one was six one. Was seven, It worked it,
was easy was it difficult? At all it was a very,
(21:30):
low cost very budget friendly version. Of it it just
involves some tape AND a. T shirt that's really all.
It TOOK but i would suspect that all of those
searches come from the adults who still don't, get it still.
DON'T understand, I mean i, GET it i understand kind.
Of it just the constant references to it with no,
(21:52):
real explanation and kids almost like it was their in
joke and they didn't want adults to know. ABOUT it
i think is what led to all of. Those searches
possibly online would make sense at the very. Least right
scientists From the University Of south australia spent four years studying,
remote work so folks working from home or working outside of,
(22:16):
the office and the findings. Were clear people working from
home tend to, be healthier happier and just as productive
as their in. Office counterparts one of the biggest perks.
More sleep remote workers get about thirty extra minutes of sleep.
Each night they also report lower anxiety stronger engagement with
their jobs without the, daily commute which averages for some
(22:38):
four point five hours. Per. Week yikes people have more
time with, their family hobbies, and rests some studies even
estimating that it adds up to extra ten days a.
Year plus working from home encourages healthier habits like, cooking
more eating. Healthier foods on the, productivity side workers are,
more efficient, meetings tighter managers are focusing more on results
(23:02):
than just. Showing up perhaps, most importantly having the freedom
to choose where and how to work seems to be
a key to long term motivation. And balance seems when
remote work is, done right it's a win win for employees.
And organizations, All right so couple things. On this i'm
a strong advocate for working. FROM home i, do it but,
(23:24):
You know i'm my. Own boss that's part Of why
i'm able to, do it and it's certainly advantageous for
me when it comes to when kids are home, from
school there's an adult at, least present Even if. I'm
working i'm able to break AWAY when i need to
break away for SOMETHING that i need. To do but
again that's more of a self employed working from. Home
(23:46):
situation this notion and this idea that a manager needs
to stand over your shoulder and watch everything that you
do in order for you to get any work done feels,
Very dated it feels VERY. Pre COVID and, I remember
i've got a good friend of mine who works in
the corporate level and a training and, advising capacity and
(24:11):
he talks a lot often, back then at least about
those challenges of managers also learning how to manage from
afar and it not just being a situation where, you're,
saying okay employees have to learn how to get. Work
done it also means that managers had to learn how
to do that, as WELL and i think in some
situations they still haven't figured. It out and that's why
(24:34):
you have a lot of businesses telling people to get back,
to work get back in, the office which, you know
if it's a job that involves you know some sort
of you need to be face to face and you
need some sort of brainstorming sessions and things that certainly can't.
Be difficult and some work does get done by, having
(24:54):
that but a lot of time gets wasted by having that.
As well so, All right so, Of home for the
first time in a, long time people are moving back
to THEIR. HOMETOWN sa a recent survey found that over
half of respondents in twenty twenty five chose to move
closer to family and return to. Familiar places that's up
forty five percent the, year before and remote work is
(25:15):
one of the things that's made. It easier with folks, craving,
affordability community slower pace of life instead of, hustle culture
people are prioritizing relationships and. Well being an, added bonus
those who move back home often help boost their local
economies and it makes it a. Win win so there. You,
go well if you're listening to, this show you probably follow,
(25:35):
the news and you probably know that at any given
point you might turn ON the tv and see something
horrific going on in. The news and anytime you see
that in experience that it's hard not to wonder is
something really bad on. The horizon AND all i can
tell you is this the time to be prepared for
(25:55):
something horrible that may happen and get everything in order.
Was yesterday the second best time to get ready for that.

if your emergency preparation isn't where it needs, to be
you don't have the things that, you need and you

could be on. The horizon and let's, be honest kind
of always feels like something horrible is on. THE horizon
i hate to be, a pessimist but. It's reality kind
of always feels like there's a, storm coming or there's
some sort of civil unrest or whatever. It, is well
