Speaker 1 (00:01):
Start your day with Wes. You're listening to the West
Carrol Morning Show.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Friday morning, seventeenth day of October. I'm Wes, thanks for
joining me. It was a short week, man, it has
flown by. First two weeks in change of October have
flown by. This all went by so quickly that I
did not even acknowledge the fact that we had the
dreaded Monday of the thirteenth. I didn't do a show

(00:30):
Monday because of the fall break that my kids and
many other kids in the area. I've heard from a
few of you saying, I guess that the fall break
for some schools a little different than what they were
doing for Muskogee County. But Monday the thirteenth, of course
worse than Friday the thirteenth, because it's Monday. Everybody can complain.

(00:52):
I'm superstitious. I don't like Friday the thirteenth. Whatever your
deal is with Friday and thirteen, it's not as bad
as Monday the thirteenth. And we survived that this week,
so we got that going for us. And it was
a shorter week because of that, at least for me,
not everybody.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
I know.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Some of you maybe took the day off or a
couple days off this week because of the fall break
situation with kids.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
I hope you got some extra time with them at least,
or they just played video games.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Kids do that. They like to stare at phones and
play video games and text their friends breaking news, other
breaking news.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Water is wet.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
A couple things I want to mention. I know you've
heard me talk about Nutcracker. Get your tickets from the source,
not from the people who have bought the tickets and
marked them up for you. That is a regular problem
that happens with the show. So go to River Center,
get them at the box office, get them through Rivercenter
dot org, get them through Thecolumbus Ballet dot org. Don't

(01:51):
overpay for the tickets. Show coming up thirteenth and fourteenth
of December. It's Saturday and Sunday evening show and Mattine's show.
My seventh time in.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
The role of Mother Ginger.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Hope you'll join us for the Nutcracker Ballet and annual tradition,
one of the great traditions this time of year. And
I say that just, you know, not just because I'm
part of the show that I'm you know, arguably technically
the biggest star of the show physically and taller than
ever after my next surgery after adding three quarters of

(02:24):
an inch getting me back to my original height. So
I got that going for me. I'll be bigger than
ever on stage. Don't miss it the Nutcracker, Thecolumbus Ballet
dot org or Rivercenter dot org or the River Center
Box office. Another quick plug I want to give you.
I haven't really talked about this much here. I don't
know that I've talked about it at all here, but
I want to make sure that you're aware of it.

(02:45):
If you're a regular listener of this show, and maybe
you don't listen to the space podcast we do, Made
of Stars, but maybe you have someone in your life
who would find this interesting because we are doing something
we have not done yet. Yesterday it was our two
hundred and fiftieth podcast of Made of Stars. It is
a space news podcast we do. We cover the events

(03:07):
going on not only out in deep space but on
Earth and all the work that happens towards, you know,
getting people into space, as well as the science behind
all of that and the studies and things that happen
in conjunction with what's being discovered in space or on Mars,
or on the Moon or you know, moons of Saturn
or Jupiter and all the fun stuff. We cover all

(03:31):
of that and then some and we do it in
a way that we hope will encourage and inspire the
future STEM career holders in the world. And maybe you
got one of those kids in your life. It's not
uncommon to have a kid in your household that says
I want to be an astronaut, or I want to
work for NASA one day, any of those things. That's
part of what they do at Columbus State University's Coca

(03:52):
Cola Space Science Center. We try to bring that energy
to the show that we do every Thursday. As I
said yesterday, it was our two hundred and fiftieth podcast
version of the show, and we also did it on
radio for you know, since two thousand and seven, so
a lot of episodes there, and then you know, two

(04:13):
hundred and fifty exclusively as a podcast. And we're doing
something on November first we've never done before. We're going
to do Made of Stars live in front of an
audience at the Coca Cola Space Science Center in the
Omnosphere Theater right there in the Planetarium. If you've ever
been to Music under the Dome, It's it's going to
be like that, except without all the musicians. It'll just

(04:35):
be me and doctor Crusin talking about space stuff, and
we hope that you'll join us. It's free. Happens at
six o'clock on Saturday, November first, and then immediately after
we finish, they'll have Astronomy Night if you'd like to
stick around for that. That is also a free activity.
Doctor Rosa Williams and team will be showing you the
nighttime sky, talking about what you're going to see in

(04:56):
the sky, getting y' all filled in on everything, and
then you know, assuming there's no clouds in the way,
a chance to check out the telescopes and things and
get a good look at the evening sky. And that
will all happen on November the first back to backfun
but we hope you'll join us. Form Ada Stars Live.
Sean will have all the facts and I'll be there

(05:19):
asking the questions and just being me. That's what I do.
That's what I do. You give me an audience, and
that's what I do. We have no idea what to expect.
We've had a lot of interest in this. I hope
you all turn out. We'd love to fill the place up,
and we'd love to make this a regular event. But
we hope to see you there. Made of Stars Live
on November first at Columbus State University's Cook Cola Space

(05:43):
Science Center on Front Avenue. All right, let's talk about
some good news as we get ready to kick off
the Friday edition of the show with I like story.
This could have been a bad story. Spoiler alert, it's
a good story. There was a runaway tortoise named mister
T and decided to take a slow stroll down a

(06:07):
busy railway line in England. Passengers standing on the platform
waiting for their trains spotted the tortoise on the tracks.
Quickly alerted railroad staff workers responded immediately and safely removed
mister T from the tracks, treated to a snack of
lettuce and water at the station cafe while the staff
posted his photo online, hoping to find his owner. Just

(06:30):
a few hours later, mister T's very relieved owner came
forward and explained that the tortoise curious, had escaped from
a nearby home and gone on a little adventure. Thankfully,
mister T was unharmed and is now back where he
belongs at home. Hopefully his curiosity has been quenched, that

(06:52):
thirst for knowledge has been attained, and maybe he knows
now not to go on train tracks. Kola is testing
out something called reverse vending machines at three college campuses
in Scotland, which allows students to trade empty bottles for
and cans for credits that they can use at school cafeterias.

(07:16):
Machines are being tested as part of a new program
organized by Coke and an environmental charity group in Scotland.
Under the current deal, students will receive twenty seven cents
credit for each bottle or can they return to the machine.
That money can then be used at the campus cafeteria.
The idea to encourage students to recycle rather than throw

(07:36):
away their empty cans, bottles and trash, and maybe even
pick up.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
A few things.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
I mean, if you know it's worth twenty seven cents,
then you pick it up and you take it in
and you can use it in the cafeteria. Joe Padwick,
one of the directors of the program, thinks the reverse
vending machines will be something that will soon be part
of everyday life. And could lead to billions of beverage
containers being recycled instead of just tossed into life fills.

(08:00):
Great story, great idea. I like it. How do we
get it in high schools? Maybe even all the way
down to elementary schools? I think that would be great.
One more good one because I like this one a lot.
Manolo betten Kerr, owner of Manolo's Bakery and Charlotte, North Carolina,
has been quietly doing something for the past twelve years,

(08:21):
baking and delivering free birthday cakes to people experiencing homelessness.
His mission is simple, to make sure everyone feels seen
and celebrated on their big day. He started his tradition
after realizing how many people go unnoticed, especially those living
on the streets. For Manolo, it's not just about the cake.
It's about dignity, kindness, and reminding people that they matter.

(08:43):
He calls the recipients his neighbors, emphasizing that homelessness doesn't
make someone any less deserving of joy. This year, betten
Kerr and his employees hit a milestone delivering their three
hundredth cake. Well done, and you gotta know this is
made some people feel great. All right, let's get to

(09:04):
some strange and bizarre news from around the world. We
have a story that actually, if you listen to the
Mate of Stars podcast yesterday or this week's edition, we
had this story on the show, and I thought, well,
this is too good of a story to not include
it in this week's Strange and Bizarre News. So a
woman in West Texas was looked up and saw this

(09:27):
massive parachute drifting in the sky and it ultimately crash
landed in her property on her ranch. Anne Vincent Walter
thought the object that landed was a weather balloon called
the sheriff's office. Little did she know that the sheriff
was already aware of something falling out of the sky,
because he had received a call from NASA asking if
he had located a piece of equipment that they had misplaced.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
Lost is the right word, I guess.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
Turns out the equipment had been launched from Fort Sumner
in New Mexico by NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Team. It
was part of an experiment to improve telescope accuracy, but
strong winds had blown it far off course. Walter was
so intrigued she called her job to ask if she
could come in late, they said yes, and she got

(10:15):
to witness the retrieval of the high tech gear firsthand.
She later shared her experience on social media, calling it
a once in a lifetime moment. Good stuff, And we
dig a little deeper into some of that, and even
we talk about Breaking Bad because there's a West Texas
connection to Breaking Bed, specifically Marty Robbins connection to the

(10:37):
show Breaking Bad.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
We talk about that.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
So check out Mata Stars wherever you listen to this podcast.
A former strip club employee in Tampa was arrested last
week for a drive by attack. Not with a gun,
but with a cheeseburger.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
Makes it a little easier, you know it was a cheeseburger.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Police say twenty six year old Jordan Cotto pulled up
outside the Atlantis Gentleman's Club hoping to speak with management.
Things quickly escalated into a heated argument. That's when investigators
say he reached down, grabbed a cheeseburger, and hurled it
at the man, hitting him on the shoulder. The victim

(11:16):
wasn't seriously hurt, but the burger did cause police what
police called bodily.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
Harm to the man.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
So not seriously hurt, but there was some bodily harm.
I think it might have just been shame he got
hit with a cheeseburger for crying out loud. No, I
would imagine that could hurt. I know somebody who once
hit somebody in the face with a burrito. So and
I don't know the outcome of that, but I would
imagine it didn't feel great. And I also know there

(11:44):
was probably some shame at getting hit with a burrito.
But I don't know the person who got hit. I
know the person who did the hitting. When questioned, Cotto
reportedly admitted to the burger toss showed zero remorse. In fact,
he told officers he would do it again. Kotto was
arrested and charged with mist meter battery and released on
his own recognizance. So he's not sorry. I mean, you

(12:06):
hit somebody with a burger, probably not gonna be sorry
about it, probably not going to show too much for
more so, I would think you did it, you commit.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
To it, you own it.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Giant Food stores is issued to recall on their hard
taco dinner kits. After discovering something unexpected inside. You might think, oh,
it's a wood glass or metal. Oh no, the kits
were taking off the shelves because some of them contained
hot chocolate packets. For some reason, the packets of cocoa
found their way into the kits, which you know, could

(12:39):
be a problem if you got a milk allergy. They
could also be a problem if you were, you know,
hoping for tacos. The packages don't typically list any milk
allergions in the ingredients. The Giant company says, anyone with
one of these kits who would like to return it
can do so.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
At the store where they purchased it.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
I'm not making light of the milk allergy because obviously
that could be a big problem, but again, it's hot chocolate.
That's not going to do much to satisfy your craving
for tacos either. A restaurant in Everglade City, Florida, is
offering customers free pizza and all they have to do
is bring in a dead Burmese python. The restaurant, Wildman's Pizza,

(13:21):
Pasta and Pythons, is owned by Dusty Wildman Crumb. Of course,
it is well known local python hunter who has devoted
much of his life to saving the Everglades ecosystem. Burmese
pythons are an invasive species causing major ecological damage to
the region. We have talked about some of these python

(13:42):
hunters and things already, but this is a different version
of it. They've drastically reduced populations of native animals like bobcats, raccoons,
and possums. So in order to combat the problem and
encourage community involvement, Crumb is rewarding python hunters with a
large specialty pizza if they do, in fact bring in

(14:05):
a dead python. So good luck, good luck on The
python hunting and armed standoff in Washington State finally came
to an end, not by violence, but by use of
a dairy queen. Police and pullman Washington were locked in
a tense standoff with a man suspected of setting his

(14:26):
own apartment on fire. Forty year old Elijah Reagan launched
a mortar style firework into his ceiling, sparking a blaze
that damaged eight apartments and forced dozens of residents to evacuate.
After the fire, Reagan reportedly called as a strange wife
and said, I bombed my apartment. He then led police
on a high speed chase while smoking meth. I assume

(14:49):
he was smoking meth, not the police. It's a strangely
worded story, he led police on a high speed chase
while smoking myth anyway, it was him, not police. According
to the story, His car was eventually stopped with a
spike strip. Police surrounded the vehicle and he refused to
get out. Cops negotiated with him and ultimately agreed to
surrender in exchange for a dairy queen blizzard. They're good,

(15:12):
you know, I mean that could get me out of
a car. Officers picked one up for him, along with
a hamburger, and used not to be thrown at anybody,
used a tactical robot to hand it to him. When
he was done, he gave himself up and he faces
charges of arson and eluding police. The blizzards are good, man,
They're good. I don't know that they make one that

(15:34):
has meth in it though. And things got a little
bananas at a recent festival in South Carolina when a
spider monkey got loose them spider monkey stories. Police in
the festival were stunned to see the little primate running
around the town. Clerk got together with the mayor and
his wife to pursue the monkey, and they eventually found

(15:56):
her sitting on the back of a parked car outside
of barber shop. She had a lease attached to a collar.
The They say that the monkey was screaming and clearly frightened. Yeah,
it's probably true. So the mayor's wife got the idea
to see if maybe spider monkey's like coffee. She placed
her hot cup of coffee on the ground and backed away.

(16:17):
It turns out the monkey does like coffee, walked right
over to take a sip when the mayor's wife stepped
on the leash, scooped her up. A short while later,
a woman came by to identify the monkey as her pet,
named Ava. Glad they included the pet's name in the
story because that was important to the story, not the
fact that a spider monkey was running around and drinking coffee.

(16:41):
Nothing weird about how did it know to drink the coffee?
And it was hot coffee? So did it you know
it blow on the coffee or did it just start
gulping because you're supposed to sip it, not gulpit.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
That's what I've heard anyway.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
Today's show brought to you by Columbus State University's Coca
Cola Space Science Center, Inspiring and educating the youth and
future STEM leaders and STEM career holders that really of
all ages. I mean they do it for school age
kids as school age kids visit the Coca Cola Space
Science Center, but they also do it through their university

(17:16):
programs where you can learn engineering, astronomy, physics, and the
careers in space and STEM fields are booming right now.
And you can learn more about maybe getting your degree
on their website CCSSC dot org. While you're there, also
check out some of their upcoming programs. They've got this

(17:39):
incredible collaboration that they do with the Schwobe School of
Music from Columbus State University called Music under the Dome.
It's unlike any concert experience that you can get anywhere else.
It's one of those things that when you're watching it
in Columbus, Georgia, you think, is this really in Columbus, Georgia.
I mean, this is a major city attraction that happens

(18:02):
right here in Columbus inside the planetarium at the Coca
Cola Space Science Center and the new season of Music
under the Dome. Check out upcoming dates for the shows
and also check out when the next Astronomy Night's coming up.
Where you can get outside sometimes you do it at
the Cocola Space Science Center. Sometimes you get outside somewhere

(18:24):
outside the city lights. You don't want any light interference,
and you can do that as well upcoming Astronomy Night
events also on their website. It's CCSSC dot org. As
Sean Crusan says Charlie Charlie SamSam Charlie dot org, I
just remind you that it stands for Coca Cola Space
Science Center CCSSC dot org. Today's show brought to you

(18:47):
by Overhead Door Company of Columbus. For all of your
garage door needs, commercial or residential. Maybe you have regular
maintenance that it's time for. It's always good to get
maintenance on anything that has parts that move and have electronics.
The folks at Overhead Door Company of Columbus can take

(19:07):
care of square in that away for you, and while
they're there, you can always ask them questions about some
of the maybe cosmetic changes you'd like to make to
your garage door. Maybe your curb appeal isn't quite what
you want it to be and you need some repair
work done to the outside door. Maybe you need a
brand new garage door completely. Maybe it's making a noise
when your garage door opens and closes. Maybe it's some

(19:30):
sort of installation issue that you've got. With colder or
warmer weather, sometimes that stuff gets in and it's inconvenient.
Maybe you're looking at a situation where you'd like to
add a screen door to your garage door system that
you can put down and you can use your garage
space as a sort of outdoor but indoor. You know,
if you like to work on your own cars in there,

(19:51):
or maybe you just want a little man cavid you'd
like to be able to open the door up and
not invite all the insects in. They can do that
for you as well, and again they I do after
hours calls. There's nothing worse than that thought of having
your car trapped inside your garage and your garage door
won't open and you need somebody to come help. And
they do those as well. Seven oh sixty five eight

Show right after the break. So you're one of those
people who likes the idea of having an aquarium but

(20:34):
doesn't like all of the upkeep. There are a lot
of upkeep. They really are. I had an aquarium in
my office once and then someone just threw it in
the trash.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
I don't know why.

Speaker 2 (20:46):
It wasn't at home, it was in an office where
I was working at the time, and for some reason
it was thrown in the trash. I still don't understand that.
I would love to have my aquarium again. However, they
are a lot of work to keep them up.

Speaker 3 (21:00):
They just are.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
Well how about if that's you and you don't like
the upkeep and you really like Lego, Well, boy, if
we got the story for you. Lego has introduced their
Lego Icon's Tropical Aquarium. It's a massive, forty one hundred
plus piece set designed for adults. It features levers and

(21:22):
cranks that make the brick built fish and coral move
in a black frame that mimics an actual aquarium. It's
not available till mid November on the sixteenth. The price
four hundred and eighty dollars. Look it looks like a
neat Lego set, That's all I'll say. I mean, I'm

(21:43):
not against it.

Speaker 3 (21:44):
I would just.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
Rather have like the real fish. It's just I love
Lego I do. I just think it's you know, it's
not a real aquarium, but if that's your thing, and
maybe your kids would love it as well. Just in
time for Christmas, a new study has to determined that
boys and young men aged fifteen to twenty four have
become even more glued to their screens. The American Time

(22:07):
You Survey tracked that in twenty ten, guys of that
age range spend an average of just under five hours
a week playing video games. Last year, twenty twenty four,
they've doubled that to over ten hours a week, and
it's mostly against other people using the internet. Ninety seven
percent of teenage boys say they play games online. I mean,

(22:31):
first of all, the fact that they're playing against each
other is gonna have an effect on how much they're playing,
because you know, yeah, one person playing against another person.
Then they're however long they play, you know, both of
them are contributing to this time, the two to tango scenario.
It's a little scary. It doesn't surprise me though, In fact,

(22:53):
I would have maybe thought that ten hours.

Speaker 3 (22:56):
A week seems low. That's just me.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
That's almost low, but it's still a lot. Almost everyone
you know complains about getting sleep Researchers have found that
young adults are turning to either alcohol or cannabis to
help make sure that they can tune out the world
as they shut their eyes. University of Michigan's Institute for
Social Research says twenty two percent of young adults in

(23:21):
the US are now using alcohol or cannabis to help
them fall asleep, and among those saying that they have
used cannabis in the past year, over forty one percent
say that they have used it exclusively.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
To help them fall asleep. Interesting.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
I know a few people who do this. This is
how they shut out the world and slow their brain
down and allow them.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
To actually go to sleep. So interesting.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
Hollywood's desire to mine other intellectual properties for content may
have hit. I don't know if they're calling this a
new low, but I mean it kind of is. It's interesting.
I mean, I can think of some scenarios where this
could be interesting in the right hands, and I think

(24:11):
it may be in the right hands. But anyway, you've
seen Battleship, You've seen you know, Pirates of the Caribbean
was one of those things. They went this is a
Disney ride, and they're gonna make a movie about it
and then it ended up being like an amazing with
four movies that.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
They got out of that Battleship.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
I know, it's kind of you know, some people loved
Battleship for it kind of being so bad it's good,
I guess.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
I don't know. But they've done this with a few.

Speaker 2 (24:37):
Games and here we go. Here's something a toy that
they have decided to turn into a live action series,
and it's the Magic eight Ball, and it's in the
hands of m Night Shymalong and the old matel magic
eight ball. You know, you pick it up, you shake it,

(24:58):
you look at the bottom, and you get, you know whatever.
The answer to your question is who you're going to
take the prom? Should I take this person? Should I
ask that person? I don't get. It doesn't give you
like you're not going to say who do I take
to prom? And it's not going to tell you like
Sally if so, that is one magic eight ball. But no,
primarily you get try again. I mean, that's what you

(25:19):
get over and over.

Speaker 3 (25:20):
And over again, you know.

Speaker 2 (25:23):
So basically, Shaymalan, I never know if I'm saying his
name right. It says that the plan is to reimagine
the Classic Magic eight Ball is the centerpiece of a
high concept, character driven supernatural drama that blends psychology, intensity,
and cultural intrigue. You know, I mean, if there's somebody

(25:48):
to do this in a psychological drama series, I mean,
that's the guy. People are just going to be waiting
for the twist ending at all times. I guess that's
the way it usually works.

Speaker 3 (25:59):
With his stuff.

Speaker 2 (26:00):
That'll do it for this Friday edition of the show.
Thanks to our sponsors and patrons. Thanks for listening. I'll
catch you back here Monday morning.

New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
