Speaker 1 (00:01):
The news, opinions, commentary, and interviews. You need to start
your day, and you're listening to the West Carrol Morning Show.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Thursday morning, sixteenth day of October. I'm west thanks for
joining me. We thought it was becoming fall. I mean,
it feels fallish now in the mornings. It's fallish. This
is what we get. We get that false fall, and
then it warms up again, and then we get, like,
you know, another false fall and warms up again. We
(00:30):
get a couple of those, and then it finally makes
its way into the actual fall, which lasts about an
hour and a half, and then it's just winter. That's
kind of the way it works, those of you who
were new to the area. That's typically sort of the
way things play out. Speaking of winter one of the
great traditions, and I guess technically it still happens in fall,
(00:53):
although I think of winter is December, January, February. That's
my mindset. I know that there's an astronomical thing, there's
a you know, the weather people have their days that
they talk about. I get all that, I understand, but
I still think of I'm on the three month system,
and I think of winter as December January, February. Those
(01:16):
are the three coldest months typically, right, and then it
makes sense then March, April May is spring, and then June, July,
August the hottest months. It just fits my system works.
I don't have to go with the astronomical stuff. I understand.
I do get that there's an astronomical thing at play,
and for some parts of the world those probably fit
(01:39):
exactly with what's going on weather wise. It's not the
case for us, and I just I think of us,
even though I know, as I just pointed out, it's
not very fall like necessarily, but we'll hit this October November,
and I think it's really September is kind of the beginning.
(01:59):
I know, it's the art of the burn months. It
starts to get a little bit of a break. Sometimes
it's not an exact science. It's not a science that
all the science has its days. I get that. But
my point is for me, December is when we officially
start winter, and that means it's time to start thinking
(02:23):
about one of the great Christmas time family traditions, the Nutcracker,
and you can get your tickets now. It is coming
up on the thirteenth and fourteenth of December, and those
are the two shows open to the public. There are
a couple of other shows that are like there's a
school show, there's a show on the evening of Friday,
(02:47):
but it's not the shows that you can buy tickets
for Saturday and Sunday, an evening show, Saturday matinee show
on Sunday. And it's a reminder. You want to get
your tickets from the Rivercenter dot org. No Rivercenter dot org.
And then you also have Thecolumbus Ballet dot org. There's
(03:12):
no v for it's just Rivercenter dot org. If you
buy the tickets from anywhere else, you run the risk
of putting yourself in a position where you end up
paying too much. You don't want to overpay. If your
ticket prices it's one hundred dollars to sit up in
the balcony, that's not the real ticket price. Someone has
bought the ticket and they're reselling the ticket, and you
(03:34):
don't want to do that. This will be my seventh
year in the role of Mother Ginger, the biggest star
in the show. Literally. I got that joke from my
friend Lufarigno, who at every convention he goes to says,
I'm the biggest star there and literally and I will
be a bigger than ever thanks to my next surgery.
(03:56):
I'm now three quarters of an inch taller than I was,
and shows they've readded my old height. I was down
three quarters of an inch. They have added that back.
My surgeon took care of that for me, and I
appreciate that. It's just part of fixing what was wrong
with my neck. But still, you know, stretch me out
(04:17):
a little bit so I'll be taller than ever on
stage on the stilts in the Nutcracker. We look forward
to seeing you there this December. Get your tickets Thecolumbus
Ballet dot org or Rivercenter dot org. That's how it
goes right. You don't have to put THEE or Columbus,
it's just Rivercenter dot org. And you can also get
(04:38):
them at the River Center box office. That's another place
you can safely get your tickets without getting ripped off.
I got a couple of questions as we move on
into the topic for today, because we have now had
Governor Pritzker in Illinois start making threats in the direction
of ice agents, and I think this is first of all,
(05:00):
he's done many things to put them in jeopardy to
put their lives in danger. He's done these things where
he's you know, still continues to call them names that
sound threatening. He's used Gestapo type language all along. I
know it was Gavin Newsom, and I think Pritzker has
also been doing it. But you've had these people that
(05:22):
are saying, you know, take the masks off. Why are
you you know, you're you look like armed thugs. You're
going in, You're grabbing people off the street. It's like,
you know, Nazi regime. It's like, you know, fascist takeover.
Whatever they want to call it, they want it to sound,
you know, as horrible as possible because they think that
(05:45):
this is the strategy that is going to end up
getting them a chance to be nominated to be the
Democrat nominee for president in a few years. We're still
in the first year of Trump's term. He's got three
more to go. I know, we get this, We're going
to do this midterm thing. I feel like these are
(06:05):
people that aren't looking out for the midterm elections. They're
looking out solely for themselves. They're only worried about their future.
That's how I feel. I don't know that anything that
they're doing threatening ice, trying to put ice in crosshairs,
trying to put them in danger. I don't think that's
doing anything to help the Democrat Party moving forward. Gavin Newsom,
(06:29):
who you know, is trying to do everything he can
do to be Trump. He's trying to mimic Trump, he's
trying to do all these things. Just go be your
own guy. You're this like smarmy Weazley. I've said this before.
I feel like if the devil was walking on Earth,
he would look like Gavin Newsom. He's just this slick
(06:51):
you know, he's not a bad looking guy. He's slick.
He's got the slick back hair. Everything about him lies
with ease. Says things on his podcast and press conferences,
just the things that come out of his mouth. You know,
he did this thing where he said at no point
and did he say certain things? And then they went
(07:12):
back and they said, here's all the different times that
you said all these things, and that's happened now, you know,
multiple times. And that's him. He's just slick. He's he's this,
he's just this slimy. You know. There's so many adjectives
I'd like to use, but I don't. I don't want
(07:34):
to insult other groups. I don't want to insult other professions.
I should say, I just don't want to do that.
I don't want to. But there's certain groups that he
just feels like. He just feels like one of those,
you know, just little weasly guys. That's what he looks like.
He looks like the devil personified. That's what he looks like.
(07:55):
And I'm not saying he's the devil. That's just what
he looks like. But he does tell life. I'm not
saying anything to try to put his life in danger.
That's not who I'm about. That's not what I think
any of us should be about. I don't think he
would do the same by asking ICE agents in California
to have to take off their masks when they're doing
their job so that people can dox them and threaten
(08:17):
them and go to their houses and potentially hurt them
and kill them. I think that's you know, that's a
whole different extreme to my approach to it, where I
just say, you know, let him run his case, let
him run his campaign. That's what he's gonna do. That's
who he thinks he's supposed to be. He already during
Biden's term. He went to the White House. He took
(08:41):
pictures at the White House. Biden was out of town,
one of his first trips out of the country, and
they took Newsom prepping him to run for president. They
took him, he walked around. I think he sat at
the desk in the chair and had his coat over
his shoulder, and he walked around, and they took lots
of photos of him, giving him these opportunities look really presidential.
I think he left the pitchfork at home. That's a
(09:02):
good idea. You really don't want to have the pitchfork.
You know. They body they did body paint to cover
up all the red on his skin, hid the horns
under that hair. They did all those things and got
him ready, and then he didn't end up being the candidate.
I mean, I think he thought that's what was gonna happen.
But anyway, so you got that, and then you got
(09:24):
Pritzker in Illinois, who has also done everything he can
to try to put ICE agents in danger, and now
just to make it worse, he's threatening them. He's basically
saying Trump's not going to be president forever, and once
he's not president, I'm gonna come after you. He's set
the table for some sort of a revenge on ICE
(09:45):
agents that come to Illinois to do their job, federal employees,
federal agents, federal law enforcement to come into his state
and do their job. And he's trying to say he'll
go out after him. I mean, where does he draw
the line. Would he do it to police officers, would
(10:06):
he do it to his own security team. I'm not
saying that they should do this, and I'm certainly not
saying that we should do anything to put him in jeopardy.
But my question is, if you're part of his security team,
if you're someone whose job is to protect the governor,
wouldn't you be tempted to just maybe, you know, walk
off the job, just kind of wander off down the street,
(10:28):
stop paying attention. Maybe you and everyone else just roam off,
and especially if you're in a busy area, lots of
people around, and just kind of let him fend for himself,
let him see how it feels. Now, nothing's going to
happen to him. Of course, I don't know. I wouldn't
think so. I would hope not. And you probably are
(10:49):
going to lose job and get fired, so that part
of it doesn't work. But I mean it's basically the
kind of corner he's painting some of these law enforcement
people in and if they want to have any loyalty
to each other, I mean, how can you feel like
you were part of law enforcement if you're ICE, if
you're being threatened for doing your job, which is taking
(11:16):
care of removing people from the country who are here illegally,
especially people who have broken laws other than just being
here now some of them just for being here. Yes,
it's a misdemeanor. We covered that yesterday with Don Lemon,
who has no understanding of what a misdemeanor is. I mean,
(11:37):
he knows Missy Elliott, but that's it. That's all that
he knows about misdemeanors. That's all he's got. But he
doesn't seem to understand that, yes, a misdemeanor is in
fact a crime. It's breaking the law. And when ICE
agents show up to do their job or federal employees
(11:58):
show up to do their job, you have a governor
in Illinois who badly wants to be president. He's trying
to be tough, he's trying to show how tough he is.
Boy I'm gonna be Trump and I'm gonna be tough.
It's so funny, isn't it. The person that they hate
and they hate so much. They hate him so much.
(12:21):
We haven't even gotten a year. It's almost there, but
we're not even a year past the election, and they're
still so mad and they hate him so much. And
the best strategy that they've come up with is to
try to be all tough. And I mean, that's that's
the best they've got. That's all that they've got is
(12:42):
to try let's see how tough. I'm gonna make all
these threats and I'm gonna try to seem like I'm
a real I'm a tough guy. That's what I am.
I am so tough. I'm so tough. I could play
quarterback for Georgia. I don't know that that's the adject
to that they say. Watch a Georgia game and listen
to how many times they they say the word tough
(13:05):
when talking about Gunner. But anyway, Oh, it's just good.
It's a good quality to have to be a tough quarterback.
You want that the Rothless Burgers and you know, the
Josh Allen's. You want a tough quarterback. It's just, you know,
they say it a lot. Every announcer has to say
the word tough a lot. And that's what these governors
want to be. They want to be tough. They want
(13:27):
to flex and show how tough they are. That's their objective.
Back over to California, doesn't the governor have other things
to do? Don't we have the Olympics coming up? I
mean we're we're, you know, less than three years away
from the Olympics and LA is hosting it. Didn't a
(13:47):
large part of LA burn to the ground because of
his and other people's incompetence and lack of preparation. Shouldn't
they be getting LA rebuilt in time for the Olympics.
I mean, I would think it's going to take at
least three years to get everything ready. I don't know
the people, the conspiracy people who think this was all
(14:08):
a strategic burn intentionally, I mean, they would argue that, yeah,
it doesn't, you don't need to. I mean, you're kind
of fueling their fire, no pun intended. If you really
if the things that need to be rebuilt aren't important
for the Olympics, because some of those people have pointed
that out, and if there's no big rush. By the way,
(14:30):
there's there's no state in the Union, no state at
all that it's harder to get anything done in They
have so many restrictions, they have so many things they
have to follow, Like it's just you have to get
you know, permission, to get permission, to get permission, to
get permission to do things in LA or in California,
(14:51):
but especially in LA they have to I don't know
New York may in New York, New Jersey may be harder,
but anyway, it'd be even harder when when they get
the communists mayor that's coming soon. So I'm sorry Democratic exsumptionalists.
It's definitely not a code word for communists, like Martin
Luther King said, So that's the thing for Martin Luther,
(15:12):
you we're supposed to ignore. So then also the World Cup,
there'll be the World Cup. They'll be like six matches.
I think they're going to be there next year, next year,
twenty twenty six, next year World Cup. People coming from
around the world to a city that's you know, just
burned to the ground because of his incompetence and the
(15:34):
mayor's incompetence, and so he doesn't have anything else to do.
Is he just is someone else handling all that and
he's just making podcasts and public appearances and attacking Joe Rogan.
That's the best he's got. He's got nothing else to do.
These other things. We don't have to get this stuff rebuilt.
He's just got nothing to do but run for president.
(15:57):
It's a good sign. That's the kind of leader that
we we really need, is someone who's just worried about
whatever the next job is. Today's show brought to you
by Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center, inspiring
and educating the youth and future STEM leaders and STEM
career holders that really of all ages. I mean, they
(16:19):
do it for school age kids as school age kids
visit the Coca Cola Space Science Center, but they also
do it through their university programs where you can learn engineering, astronomy, physics,
and the careers in space and STEM fields are booming
right now. And you can learn more about maybe getting
your degree on their website CCSSC dot org. While you're there,
(16:46):
also check out some of their upcoming programs. They've got
this incredible collaboration that they do with the Schwobe School
of music from Columbus State University called Music under the Dome.
It's unlike any concert experience that you can get anywhere else.
It's one of those things that when you're watching it
in Columbus, Georgia, you think, is this really in Columbus, Georgia.
(17:07):
I mean, this is a major city attraction that happens
right here in Columbus inside the planetarium at the Coca
Cola Space Science Center and the new season of Music
under the Dome. Check out upcoming dates for the shows,
and also check out when the next Astronomy Night's coming up.
(17:27):
Where you can get outside. Sometimes you do it at
the Cocola Space Science Center. Sometimes you get outside somewhere
outside the city lights. You don't want any light interference,
and you can do that as well upcoming Astronomy Night
events Also on their website. It's CCSSC dot org. As
Sean Crusan says, Charlie Charlie SamSam Charlie dot org, I
(17:49):
just remind you that it stands for Coca Cola Space
Science Center CCSSC dot org. Today's show brought to you
by Overhead Door Company of Columbus for all of you
Garage Door needs commercial or residential. Maybe you have regular
maintenance that it's time for. It's always good to get
(18:09):
maintenance on anything that has parts that move and have electronics.
The folks at Overhead Door Company of Columbus can take
care of square and that away for you, and while
they're there, you can always ask them questions about some
of the maybe cosmetic changes you'd like to make to
your garage door. Maybe your curb appeal isn't quite what
you want it to be and you need some repair
(18:30):
work done to the outside door. Maybe you need a
brand new garage door completely. Maybe it's making a noise
when your garage door opens and closes. Maybe it's some
sort of insulation issue that you've got. With colder or
warmer weather, sometimes that stuff gets in and it's inconvenient.
Maybe you're looking at a situation where you'd like to
add a screen door to your garage door system that
(18:53):
you can put down and you can use your garage
space as a sort of outdoor but indoor, you know,
if you like to work on your own cars in there,
or maybe you just want a little man cavid. You'd
like to be able to open the door up and
not invite all the insects in They can do that
for you as well, and again they do after hours calls.
There's nothing worse than that thought of having your car
(19:14):
trapped inside your garage and your garage door won't open
and you need somebody to come help, and they do
those as well. Seven oh six thy five eight forty
five hundred seven oh six three five eight forty five
hundred O dccolumbus dot com more West Carol Morning Show
right after the break, Well, this is a little bit
(19:41):
of a scary trend. Young adults looking for roommates to
split their rent are becoming more likely to find someone
twice their age to live with, according to new data.
That's because older Americans fifty five and up fastest growing
group in the US rental market. As older people are
(20:04):
finding housing to be less affordable, more of them turning
to rentals and looking for roommates. The US Census Bureau
says that between twenty thirteen and twenty twenty three, the
number of renters age sixty five and over increase by
two point four million, a thirty percent increase from a
decade prior. While the twenty and thirty somethings still dominate
(20:27):
the rental market. More boomers are moving in now. It's
interesting the creativity here when you start trying to, you know,
mix these two groups together. I'll say this. I would
think this just me. I'm not in this fifty five
and up age group just yet, but I would think
(20:50):
it might be a little harder for the boomer age
group to move in with someone younger. I would think
the younger people are getting a bit of a win
here because you know that those boomers are probably going
to pay the bills on time, have an understanding of
what it means to pay those bills, and have good
(21:13):
credit and all those things. Now, they also might be
looking at you funny if you're playing video games all day,
just pointing that out. Just be aware. But it's a
little bit of a scary trend, isn't it. Well, you
might be getting more than just some extra protein when
you use a protein powder to boost your smoothie. Consumer
Reports tested twenty three popular protein powders and ready to
(21:35):
drink shakes and found that more than two thirds of
them contain more lead in a single serving than experts
say is safe to have in a day. The worst
offenders in the tests were naked nutritions, vegan mass gainer powder,
and it gives the breakdown seven point seven micrograms of
(21:56):
lead per serving. That's fifteen hundred and seventy percent above
Consumer reports level of concern. Fuel's black addition, which contains
six point three micrograms of lead, or about twelve hundred
and ninety percent over the daily lead limit. Consumer Reports
did add there's no reason to panic if you've been
using any of the products that they tested. Many of
(22:17):
the powders are fine to have occasionally, but if you
are loading up on them, and it's interesting. I mean,
I know that there's going to be a lead amount
that is considered okay, But does it make you feel
It makes me feel weird. I mean, it just makes
me feel if I know there's lead paint on the wall,
I don't go licking the wall. That's all I'm saying.
(22:39):
Maybe there's a safe amount of wall licking you can do.
That's all I'm getting at. That's just my thought on it. Well,
it's almost Halloween's scary movie season is upon us, and
it turns out watching them does give us more than
a good scare, could be fueling actual fears, especially fear
of the dark. A recent survey found that nearly three
(23:02):
in ten adults still admit to being afraid of the dark. Interestingly,
men were slightly more likely than women to say this
thirty three percent to twenty six percent to cope, twenty
five percent sleep with a night light, and about ten
percent keep the lights on all night, with men again
more likely to do this than women. Eleven percent of
(23:22):
those surveyed admit they still sleep with a stuffed animal
or a comfort item. While the survey looked at how
scary movies, especially around Halloween, might be contributing to the fears,
twenty eight percent of respondent said they love horror films
and try to watch as many as possible. I do
find it interesting when these surveys come out and the
(23:44):
number of people that seem willing to open up about
things like things that you once would have never said
out loud. You know, people in that boomer group probably
aren't opening up to the twenty somethings when they're mates
about how they have to have a night light. That's
all I'm saying. Well, forget about hot cocoa and bacon cookies.
(24:06):
The winter arc trend is about to get ahead start
as far as you start preparing for those new year's
resolutions this time of year, with temperatures starting to drop
in days, it was warm yesterday and it's gonna be
warm again today. But that's just here, well not just here,
but that's what's called living in Georgia this time of year. Well.
(24:27):
As temps are starting to drop in, days get shorter,
people tend to let go a bit, relaxing in terms
of their goals and indulging in holiday excesses until the
new year. And the Winter arc is actually about shaking
that up. Instead of waiting until January, people are supposed
to use the last three months of the year to
kickstart those healthier habits and routines, from exercise to sleep
(24:50):
and screen time. The idea is that you beat the
winter blues as they start to emerge, and then you
become a better version of yourself by the time the
new year starts. That's the strategy anyway, Good luck. That'll
do it for this Thursday edition of the show. Thanks
to our sponsors and patrons. Thanks for listening. Catch you
(25:12):
back here tomorrow morning.
