Speaker 1 (00:01):
The news, opinions, commentary, and interviews. You need to start
your day. You're listening to the West Carrol Morning Show.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Wednesday morning, thirtieth day of July. I'm West thanks for
joining me. We are knocking on the door of August.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
One more day.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
I mean, you got today and then tomorrow and then August.
We're already on that downhill slide. I always say this,
and I always just feel this constant.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Reminder.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
I feel like whenever time's zipping sliding in all that
stuff just zipping right along, I get that reminder. We'll
be into Christmas shopping here soon. I actually was looking
at a Christmas present online yesterday that I was shopping for,
so didn't buy it yet, but I'll pull the trigger

(00:55):
on it very soon.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
That's what I was doing yesterday.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
So just awareness that I know still early. I get that,
but does feel like it will just all of a
sudden be late November and we're gonna go what happened.
We'll be ready to do the Nutcracker. It'll be right there.
The Nutcracker will be upon us.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
I do realize that before we can get into really
talking about Christmas and the Nutcracker again, we have dragon
Con coming up Labor Day weekend, the dragon Con Pregame
Show coming to radio and podcast wherever you get your podcasts,
where you get this podcast.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
How about that. There may be some it's not on.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
I don't know, but it's the dragon Con Pregame Show
podcast and the dragon Con Pregame Show a radio edition
coming the weekend before Labor Day weekend. That's when it drops,
That's when it's official. At this point, I can just
tell you. I know Katie Sakoff will be joining us.
I know there are a few other guests maybe with
Star Wars connections that I may be talking with, some

(02:02):
Marvel connections possibly, And that's all I can really say
at this point.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
I'll just tell you. Very soon I'll.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Have the full rundown of the guests that will be
a part of the pregame show. And it's powered by
Columbus State Universities Coca Cola Space Science Center, where you
can learn the science behind the fiction.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
All right, let's get into some a few topics.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
I've got like three things that I was thinking about
really talking about today, and it's kind of in no
particular order. There is a level of importance to the topics, certainly,
but one of them it's not that important, I don't think,
but I think it's worth talking about. And I kind
of wonder if I should just get that one out

(02:46):
of the way and move on to the metior topics
or start with the meteor topics. I don't know, I'll
just I'll start with the media topics and if I
don't get to the other one, I'll get to it.
I mean, it's not urgent, and maybe I can do it,
you know, after the break, so it falls under the

(03:07):
category of the And you don't hear me use these
terms a lot, or this particular term, this expression very much.
I was tempted to use it once on my trip
in a conversation with someone because I was chatting with
someone who was telling me that. And I guess this
Canadian family was saying that they were in Australia but

(03:30):
wanted to go back and visit in Canada, or we're
trying to make a trip somewhere around the world but
didn't want to stop in the US. They were just
so angry about Trump, didn't want to have anything to
do with stopping off. And then they were also discussing
with us about there were some things in today's lingo.
You know these kids today and their lingo, and they

(03:54):
were talking about some of the things they didn't really understand,
some terminology that they were unfamiliar with, and whether it
was in texting, and similar to the my dad will
use LOL to mean lots of love. He doesn't understand
it means laugh out loud. I've explained it to him.
He still doesn't get it. He still thinks it means

(04:15):
lots of love. You know what, more power to him.
He's my dad is now eighty, he's living his best life,
and if he wants it to mean lots of love,
then go for it. You let it be whatever you
want it to be. But in this conversation, this particular
person was telling me that she was helping her husband
understand some terminology, like she and their son were kind

(04:39):
of running through some of the things that younger people
say that he doesn't understand what it means, and she
was kind of running through some of the things and
we were having a nice laugh about that. And then
she explained this trip they wanted to take and how
he was going to go. You know, he was gonna
do whatever he could do. Travel the other way around
the world to get to this trip they wanted to

(05:01):
go on in order to avoid landing in the US
because this guy was that upset about Trump. And at
that point in my mind and I had I had
this in the holster, it was ready to go, and
I thought, maybe you should tell them what Trump arrangement
syndrome means. But I decided to, you know, be nice,

(05:23):
just to be nice. You know, it doesn't cost you
anything to do that. I don't often speak of that.
I think it's absolutely a real thing for a lot
of people. And if someone is so angry with our
president that they will fly and spend more money, time
and money to go out of the way to stay
away from our country. Just landing here and being in

(05:47):
an airport for a little while, that certainly qualifies in
that there's a there's a level of hate, there's a
level of I think it's a lot of misunderstanding.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
I think ignor prince is probably the right word.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
I think there's a strong element of that that comes
into play.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
But I digress.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
I don't talk about that term very much, but I
got a couple of examples of that, just things that
have happened really in the last couple of days, and
often when I share stories like that story, that's not
to I didn't mention any names, I didn't say exactly
who it was. I may have people listening that know

(06:29):
who I'm talking about, that are familiar with some of that.
It's not meant to be little anything. It's just meant
to say, look, we have people that are misinformed. We
have people that are misinformed on both sides of the
political aisle. We do the fact that we have people
that are misinformed and choose to stay as misinformed as possible,

(06:52):
or the things that I find concerning, if there's at
least a hunger or a desire to try to understand things,
that gives me a little hope. That's a little bit
of a breath of fresh air. I'm not a fan
of Bill Maher, but I see what he's doing when

(07:12):
it comes to at least making an effort to try
to understand both sides. That dinner that he had at
the White House with Trump and Kid Rock and Dana
White and others. That's something that you say, this is
showing some sign of maturity or progress or at least

(07:33):
being inquisitive wanting to try to understand going in probably
with a certain amount of expectations, and then coming out
with something that was different. Still doing what he does.
He's not a Trump fan by any means, but he
has had these moments where he said, you know what,

(07:54):
I have to at least admit I was wrong about things.
We talked about this yesterday when it came to tariffs
in the economy and things. So that's a positive. That's
where we could all, I think, at least hope to
be see what we've gone through in the last many years.
And I've dated this at twenty one years. I can

(08:16):
speak specifically to this particular aspect of things. But two
thousand and four was the first year that I recall
someone telling me that they could not be my friend
if I didn't vote the same.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
Way that they did. This was someone who was a.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Staunch liberal and staunch liberal for two thousand and four. Okay,
first time I had someone say to me, we can't
be friends if you don't vote the same way that
I do. And it seemed odd then, but this was
before I was covering politics, and I remember thinking, this
doesn't seem right, This doesn't even feel right, this seems

(08:56):
really evil. This has this feeling of very misguided, very ignorant,
and touching.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
On the line of evil. This is something that this
is cult like.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Right, you're saying, oh, I can't talk to you, And
what we've seen play out over twenty one years is
a series of this getting worse, and it really does
tend to come from the left. Can't associate with you,
can't be friends with you, your support someone who we've all
heard repeatedly from politicians and from the media is evil,

(09:37):
So therefore you're evil. I can't associate with you, And
that in itself is kind of evil, right it isn't
it at least toeing the line for it.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
So if you believe that.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
And then you don't associate with other people, then the
people who want to control you have won. You're really
just a pawn. And I'm not talking to people on
the left that have friends on both sides have no
problems dropping all of that and having an ability to
not discuss politics in a social setting, to just be

(10:16):
able to turn it off. I like being around those people.
I understand I do this, and then when I stop
doing this, I can have a conversation with you about this.
But as I've pointed out, I'm not evangelical about it.
You have your opinions, you have your views, whatever you
want them to be. I'm not going to tell you
have to change. I could still be your friend. Now,

(10:38):
whether you can be my friend, I don't know. The
powers that be don't want.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Us to talk.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Bill mar took a lot of flak for just walking
into the White House and saying, all right, I'm here,
tell me why I'm here, And that's kind of how
he approached that. I don't think he came out of
it different in that he still goes after Trump and
has issues with him. But I do give him credit
at the very least he's now approaching things from the

(11:04):
perspective of, okay, let me help me understand. And now
that I'm kind of seeing things a little differently, I'm
starting to kind of understand. But anyway, not a fan.
I'm not a Bill Maher fan by any means. This
is not something for me that I say, wow, I've
got to got to watch his show. I see the

(11:25):
headlines whenever he says something interesting, and that's when I
follow up on it. So anyway, we have people that
definitely live in that world. They don't want to associate
with anybody who has different opinions to them, and they're
comfortable rooting their hatred in this area of Well, this
is what I was told, or this is what I feel.

(11:49):
I don't have any evidence to support it, but this
is how I feel. This is what I believe to
be happening. So we just had a great week for
this administration, a great week for the country. I understand
if you don't support him, you probably don't want the
things that he wants to do to succeed. But overall, economically,

(12:12):
when we're all succeeding, things are good for us. If
you support all these social programs that we have in place,
you have to at least be supportive when economically we
do well and that kitty starts to get refilled, because
let's be honest, those social programs have to be funded somewhere.

(12:35):
We were on a trajectory under the last administration for
a lot of that to dry up. The deficit was insane,
or it is insane, but it was progressively getting so
much worse over that like five year period starting back
in twenty nineteen with COVID. So yes, us doing well

(12:55):
right now should be something that at least on some
level you should be able to to celebrate, but that's
not the way it works because it's all about politics
and it's all about what you're told. So cuts have
been made, and some of those cuts are having a
very specific economic impact on individuals jobs around the country.

(13:18):
We've heard all these stories about jobs. We know things
are going on when it comes to public broadcasting right now,
and there should be concerns for people who work in
public broadcasting because it's a looming thing hanging over people's
heads that maybe things are going to go away. And
we've had this ongoing discussion now for again it's been

(13:42):
like thirty years about whether or not the public should
still be funding public broadcasting. So the main argument here
is that the average citizen is going to have some
of their tax money go towards public broadcasting. But if

(14:03):
public broadcasting only supports one party or only supports one truth, right,
there's this idea now that's come from public broadcasting where
they say, look, we're looking for agenda based, we're not
looking for the truth. When it comes to journalism. That
should be a red flag that should jump out at anybody.

(14:28):
It should unless you're so biased and one sided that
you think, hey, cheating is fine. Let's cheat the system,
and let's let everybody pay to cheat the system. So
you can tell yourself and convince yourself that this is
about somebody who got their feelings hurt. Because everybody wants

(14:49):
to say Trump just gets his feelings hurt and he
goes after people. They want to say he got his
feelings hurt by Stephen Colbert, so he went after him.
People are just filling in the blanks. They just say,
we know that that's what happened.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
You don't know that.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
You don't You're just making up a narrative in your head,
or someone's made up a narrative and told you, and
you're just buying into it with no evidence to support
it at all, and you're willing to put our future
on the line for it. Right as a country wheres
cuts are coming in and it's putting us in a
position where we can all do a little better economically.

(15:24):
Let's also go to the other the reason I brought
up the tariffs this week, because here we go, great
week for the country, great week for the American people,
and what is the mainstream media discussing. They're discussing whether
or not Donald Trump was cheating at golf in Scotland.
They saw somebody drop a ball and they said he
probably hit the ball. So that person who dropped the

(15:45):
ball is caddy or whatever they were doing that to
help him cheat. I'm not aware of him being in,
you know, even a senior PGA tournament, Like what are
we keeping up with? And USA Today asked the White House, Hey,
what was going on with that?

Speaker 3 (16:04):
Was that cheating?

Speaker 2 (16:06):
And of course our White House Press Secretary's Office responded
with a hey, let's focus on the teriff or are
you worried about the golf game? The legendary golf game
was how it was worded, And yes, that is exactly
we heard. All this stuff about distractions about Epstein from

(16:29):
the White House is distracting us about Epstein by all
these accusations coming out about Barack Obama, former President Obama
and his staff, his team, and that was a distraction,
but at least it would be a worthwhile distraction.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
If it was. I don't think it was.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
But if it was, is talking about the president's golf
game a worthwhile distraction? Is that worth our time? In
any way shape or form? I mean any way shape
or form or is it a useless distraction just to
get us talking about anything else except for success. And
it's also meant to be something to get people to ridicule,

(17:09):
so that again they just believe that's how bad this
guy is.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
He even cheats at golf.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
Today's show brought to you by Columbus State University's Coca
Cola Space Science Center.

Speaker 4 (17:20):
Hey. Everyone, this is doctor Sean Crusin. I'm the executive
director of Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center.
I want to tell you about a very special exhibit
that we have on display the summer. It's so big
that it can't even fit in our own exhibit gallery.
It's just too many pieces. This is a collection of

(17:40):
items from the personal collection of astronaut David R.

Speaker 3 (17:44):
Scott.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
Dave Scott flew on Gemini eight with Neil Armstrong. He
flew on Apollo nine, a dress rehearsal for the moon landing,
and then most importantly perhaps he commanded Apollo fifteen, where
he became the first person to ever drive a car
on the surface of the Moon. Because Dave's brother Tom
lived and worked here in Columbus, Georgia, with our Columbus

(18:06):
Chamber of Commerce. We got to be good friends with Tom.
Tom has coordinated a very generous donation of artifacts and
memorabilia from the Scott Brothers collection to us here at
Coca Cola Space Science Center. And again that's that collection
got so overwhelmingly large we couldn't put it on display here.
That's why we're doing the exhibit at the Bow Bartlet Center.

(18:26):
They are open from eleven am to four pm Tuesday
through Saturday. Go down and check out this great exhibit
on display at the Bow Bartlet Center. Check out all
the other wonderful pieces of artwork down there as well,
and then come visit us here at Columbus State University's
Coca Cola Space Science Center.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
Today's show brought to you by Overhead Door Company of Columbus.
For all of your garage door needs, commercial or residential.
Maybe you have regular maintenance that it's time for. It's
always good to get maintenance on anything that has parts
that move and have electronics. The folks at Overhead Door
Company of Columbus can take care of square in that

(19:05):
away for you, and while they're there, you can always
ask them questions about some of the maybe cosmetic changes
you'd like to make to your garage door. Maybe your
curb appeal isn't quite what you want it to be,
and you need some repair work done to the outside door.
Maybe you need a brand new garage door completely. Maybe
it's making a noise when your garage door opens and closes.

(19:26):
Maybe it's some sort of insallation issue that you've got
with colder or warmer weather. Sometimes that stuff gets in
and it's inconvenient. Maybe you're looking at a situation where
you'd like to add a screen door to your garage
door system that you can put down and you can
use your garage space as a sort of outdoor but indoor.
You know, if you like to work on your own

(19:47):
cars in there, or maybe you just want a little
man cavid you'd like to be able to open the
door up and not invite all the insects in. They
can do that for you as well, and again they
do after hours calls. There's nothing worse that thought of
having your car trapped inside your garage and your garage
door won't open and you need somebody to come help,
And they do those as well. Seven oh sixty five

(20:10):
eight forty five hundred, seven oh six three five eight
forty five hundred o dccolumbus dot com more West Carol
Morning Show right after the break. Okay, so this is
this is the topic that's not all that important, and

(20:31):
I wanted to try to get to it in the
first segment. But that's all right, we'll talk about it
now because really it's I mean, it's a comical thing
that happened, but we're not supposed to think that it's comical.
We're not supposed to acknowledge it in any way as
being comical, but it is happened during a WNBA game.

(20:53):
Khalia Copper is her name. Her wig came off during
the game. You may not know the name Khalia Copper.
I didn't know it, but she's a w NBA player,
trust me. And her wig came off during the game
and there's a timeout called play got stopped. Copper grabbed
the wig, ran off the court into the back to

(21:14):
hide the fact that I guess she was wearing a wig.
First of all, I didn't know, Like I know, there's
some circumstances where you wear a wig and it's very
much kind of like you know, it's a hush hush,
you keep it quiet. You don't want people to know
that you're wearing a wig. If Lebron James that thing,

(21:36):
that whatever it is he's wearing, if that came off,
it would be kind of like, oh my gosh. We
knew there's something going on there, but we didn't know
exactly what it was. Now we can see what it is.
But I think in many instances, especially when you've got
women that you know, they treat wigs. Some women that's

(21:56):
at all, but some women treat wigs like and I
worked with many women who did this, and they just said, look,
I just I wear something for a little while, I
switched over to the other one. It's not a big deal.
I might wear something one day, wear something completely different
than next, and then go back to the other. I
worked with women like that.

Speaker 3 (22:13):
It was nothing.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
We just all thought, oh, your hair looks nice today.
Oh it's a new wig, and you just move on
with it. I didn't know this was a big shock.
I didn't know this was a crazy thing to find out.
This is not like, you know, I'm not talking about
now family feud. Obviously he's bald, But when Steve Harvey was,
you know, wearing that wig, the little hat wig that
he was wearing and when he was doing the Steve

(22:35):
Harvey Show, if that had fallen off while they were taping, yeah,
I could imagine he would grab it and run to
the back because it'd be like, oh my gosh, John Travolta,
Ted Dance and any of those.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
People when you go like, I think they're wearing a wig.

Speaker 2 (22:49):
It would have been a big, big deal. I don't
know that this was a big deal. This was a
player who I mean, the wig came off during a
basketball game. It's not like grabbing it and running into
the back of races it from happening.

Speaker 3 (23:03):
It happened.

Speaker 2 (23:05):
What's most interesting about it is that they stopped play
for it, like that was a justifiable reason to just
stop an athletic competition from But and then I guess
someone made fun of her from the stands and got ejected.
I don't understand what's going on in the WNBA, But
apparently you can't make a joke about somebody wearing a wig.

(23:26):
It hurts somebody's feelings or triggers them or whatever it does.
And ah, yeah, yeah, I mean, anyway, I told you
yesterday about the tea app or yesterday or Monday Africa,
which day.

Speaker 3 (23:40):
But the tea app where people.

Speaker 2 (23:43):
Rate men women rate men with a red flag or
a green flag, Well, it's been hacked twice in the
last couple of days, and it's exposed more than seventy
thousand user images, photo IDs, and direct messages. The data
breach is sensitive because the app itself is a bit
controversial because it's women rating men and it's supposedly private.

(24:05):
So also a big deal because users were assured.

Speaker 3 (24:09):
That they would remain anonymous.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
So if you shared something intimate about a guy, even
if you're just saying, hey, this is a friend of
mine and you probably don't want to date him even
though he's a friend of mine, but you may you
know all that kind of informations I guess in there.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
So we'll see where this goes.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
For the most currently the most downloaded free app in
the Apple Store number one. I don't know how this
will affect that, obviously, I can't imagine it will be
a good thing. But anyway, how many friends does someone need? Well?
A new study says five people with five good friends

(24:48):
reportedly are have the best well being. Those with three
close friends weren't as happy. Doesn't seem like a big difference.
But according to research, it is basically having five friends
gives you more peace of mind and there's a feeling
that there's always someone there that you can count on
or call.

Speaker 3 (25:07):
So that's nice. That's how many you need? You need five?
Do you have five? You're good? You need at least five,
most people do at least. So school getting started.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
I know some in O were listening area getting started
this week, Muscogee County which is a big chunk of
the listening area where we are doing the show out
in the Chadah Chattahoochee Valley. And there are other schools
starting back next week other districts, but Muscoge County back
next week. New survey parents have school aged kids found

(25:39):
that back to school shopping this season is putting a
lot of financial stress on them, so much so that
they're going into debt and cutting back on essential school supplies,
cutting back on essentials to afford school supplies. Rather, thirty
nine percent of parents survey said they can't afford back
to school shopping this year. Forty four percent said they
plan to take on to cover the cost. That's up

(26:02):
thirty four percent from thirty four percent from twenty twenty
four f four percent of parents said that they plan
to sacrifice necessities like groceries to make sure their kids
have what they need for the upcoming school year. You know,
there are necessities for back to school, and then there

(26:22):
are not necessities for back to school.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
Someone was asking me yesterday.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
Boys all got brand new clothes for going back to school.

Speaker 3 (26:30):
No, they got closed for going back to school. They're
not all brand new. They get shoes when they need them.
They don't get new shoes for back to school. They
get shoes when they need shoes. They get clothes when
they need clothes.

Speaker 2 (26:44):
That's what we do. That's how it works. New backpack,
we'll check the other one. I think it's good. They
can keep using it. There's nothing that says they can't
use it. That's kind of how we do it. That's
our version of beating the stress of back to school shopping.

Speaker 3 (26:58):
I know not everybody can do that.

Speaker 2 (26:59):
Some kids just to wear out the clothes, wear them
out quickly, wear out the book bags.

Speaker 3 (27:04):
That'll do it.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
For this Wednesday edition of the show, thanks to our
sponsors and patrons.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
Thank you for listening. I'll catch you back here tomorrow morning.

Speaker 1 (27:12):
