If we can continue to pretend Kobe Bryant was a saint after his death, we can at least put Hulk Hogan's career in perspective in the weeks after his passing.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
The news, opinions, commentary, and interviews. You need to start
your day, and you're listening to the West Carrol Morning Show.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Monday morning, twenty eighth day of July. I'm Wes, thanks
for joining me, kicking off another week together. Final week,
not even a whole week. We're days away from rolling
on into August, and the upcoming month of August means

(00:32):
we're almost to dragon Con. This year, the dragon Con
Pregame Show will premiere on two hundred or so radio
stations around the state of Georgia on August twenty third
and twenty fourth. And if you happen to live in
a city that is in a bordering state and it

(00:54):
has a station that is based out of Georgia, or
maybe a license maybe in another state but run by
someone in Georgia, may just get your chance to hear
it then as well, because it will be heard throughout
the southeast on a number of stations. Two hundred or
so stations are going to cover it, and I want
to thank first our friends at the Georgia News Network,

(01:17):
part of how we make all this happen, and then
also our sponsor four years of the dragon Con Pregame
Show Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center, and
we like to often discuss on the Mate of Stars
podcast elements of science and science fiction. This all ties
in great because my co host of the Mate of

(01:38):
Stars podcast wherever you hear this podcast is doctor Sean
Crusen from the coc Cola Space Science Center, and he
and I like to talk about science science fiction, the
connection between the two, and a regular sponsor of our
pregame show and the Dragon Con Pregame Show podcast, which
will also be dropping right around that weekend of the

(02:01):
twenty third. We do the show the weekend before dragon Con. Now,
if you're new to this whole deal and you haven't
listened to me for years, then you may be going okay,
dragon Con. That is that one of those nerd conventions
that sort of sure, there's elements of that to it,
but it's more than that. It's a popular arts convention.

(02:23):
You don't have to be a nerd to be involved.
Doesn't hurt, doesn't hurt, but that's not really what it is.
So it's this huge convention. I guess there's now five
host hotels. Takes place in downtown Atlanta every Labor Day. Weekend,
and it also they take over America's Mark nearby. That's
where all the vendors are. If you want to buy

(02:43):
a t shirts, you want to get a tattoo, you
want to get a piercing, you want to buy a sword,
you want to buy a lightsaber, you want to buy
dice for games, you want to buy actual games, all
those sorts of things, any kind of fandom, anything that
you want represented, will be there for sale America's Mark.
But then also what goes on in the other hotels.

(03:04):
It's just a constant living convention that takes place all
weekend with guests from various fandoms appearing this year, including
some of the people who've been on past dragon Con
pregame show, radio and podcast and you can listen to
those now if you go to where wherever you're listening

(03:25):
to podcasts, go to the dragon Con Pregame Show podcast
and you can listen to interviews with people like William Shatner,
George t Ka, Mini Mouse, Donald Duck. I mean, lots
of great voice actors from over the years, some iconic,
but the current voice of Mini Mouse, the current voice

(03:45):
of Donald Duck, and then also Star Wars, Star Trek
and others. Now, speaking of crossover fantoms, I am today
ready to announce our first guest for this year's show,
and I'm very excited at someone that I've wanted to
interview for you years, and she is now booked for
this year's show, so you'll be able to hear her.

(04:06):
I'll be interviewing her soon in the next couple of weeks.
Really looking forward to having her on the show. She
is and when I say, sort of a crossover fandoms
Battlestar Galactica, Longmire, Right, and Star Wars in the Mandalorian series,

(04:27):
as well as in Ahsoka. So Katie Sakoff, I've looked
forward to having an opportunity to talk with her for
quite some time. I've been anxious to get that interview,
and we got it set up. It's all ready to go.
We'll do that. I've got a couple of others I
can't announce just yet, but I'll have my chance to
announce them very soon. Very excited about the potential other guests.

(04:50):
I think one maybe I could go ahead and call,
but I'm not going to do it yet. Like I
think I could make one more announcement, but I'm going
to wait ntil it's official. When I know the time
and the date for the interview, i'll let you know,
but that may be I may have that for you tomorrow.
And this is a relative of one of the most
iconic people in movie history. Okay, sort of a relative,

(05:16):
how about that? Kind of there's a relation there. There's
a connection to this icon and I'm looking forward to
that interview as well, but not official yet, so I'll
wait again. Thanks to Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space
Science Center. Okay, Now for today's show, I want to
go back speaking of people that I've interviewed. Not for
Dragon Con though, although one of the elements of this

(05:38):
convention when I say it's not just nerds, wrestling is
a component of Dragon Con every year. And a friend
from back in the radio days, in the Top forty
radio days and from conventions and spend a lot of
time with this guy at a place places like Hooters

(06:01):
his choice, but the Iron Chic who I had a
nice rapport with over the years. We had him in
Columbus for a number of events, and he and Hulk
Hogan had this bitter relationship and it was really more
Chic than Hogan. Being honest, I don't Hogan. I never

(06:22):
heard anything really said about the Chic from Hogan. Chic
was just upset, like it was one of those things
in wrestling where when you get over on somebody and
you win, typically there's a chance for a rematch later
you get another chance to try to, you know, win
the title back. I guess that never happened between Hogan
and the Chic was bitter about it. If you ever

(06:43):
met him anywhere and mentioned Hogan's name, you heard about it.
If you followed The Iron Chic on Twitter, there were
a lot of things about Hogan on there.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Well.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
I had I booked an event with Hulk Hogan's daughter
Brooke to come to Columbus and she was launched a
singing career at the time, and she was opening for
another act that we had for a show, and I thought, well,
I'd love to have Brooke come in and sing, and
her dad was going to come with her, and so
he helped us promote the show and all those sorts

(07:15):
of things, and I got to know him from that,
and ultimately I had an opportunity to get him and
The Iron Chic on the phone together and patch things up.
And for Hogan it didn't seem to be patching things up.
He just was genuinely The Sheik had had some terrible
things happen in his personal life. Hogan. I let Hogan
know about it, and I said, if you want to

(07:36):
reach out, we can get you on the phone with him.
He said, yeah, let's call him, and they did. They talked.
The Sheik was really happy to hear from him. They
worked through some of their things, at least the things
that Sheic needed to work through, and it was one
of the cool moments of my radio career, my broadcast
career was being part of that moment. These two guys.

(07:57):
Hogan easily the most popular and iconic wrestler of all time.
I mean, he is for professional wrestling, the guy you
can make arguments about various you know, every there's always
these comments where people say, you know, who's the greatest

(08:19):
basketball player ever? And then people try to go generation
to generation about who's the greatest and you know, currently
will go oh, Lebron because he's the current one. That's
really the way things work in a lot of sports.
Tennis players, there's this talk of who the best is
currently at least in women's tennis. You know, people would
say Serena Williams and there's not really been someone to

(08:42):
come along and threaten to take that title from her,
but it will happen. At some point, there will be someone.
People will say, Wow, she's better than Serena Williams. There's
some people who say Serena Williams for tennis in general,
is arguably the best tennis player ever. Now, certainly wouldn't
beat the best men's players, but that's that's not what
we're talking about. Just as far as her importance to

(09:06):
women's tennis and things like that, you could make that case.
I don't. I don't have a problem with that case.
The people who try to say that she could play
against the men and you know, she would say I
could play the worst ranked men's player and I would
get crushed, and that was those were her words. So
understanding that difference. But this isn't a conversation about biology.

(09:27):
That's what I want to talk about today. My point
is Hogan for the most part, not the best technical wrestler.
There are other guys that you would say, I mean,
you could make a case that, you know, Rick Flair
is the best wrestler of all time. But even Rick
Flair says Hogan was more of an icon than I was,
and I think that's accurate. I think there are guys

(09:50):
there's there's there's guys who were good wrestlers that weren't
necessarily this uh head and shoulders above everyone else's figure
that the whole Cogan was. And he had other things
working for him. He was in Rocky three, you know.
I guess he got fired from WWF back then for
doing that movie. He was told not to do it.

(10:11):
He did TV, he did movies. None of that stuff
really panned out as well obviously as wrestling did for him.
But he was this iconic figure. Now I know there
are reasons that people don't like him. We've learned more
things about him behind the scenes. We've heard all these stories.
We've learned about some of the things that he said.

(10:33):
There was the issues of steroids, when he lied about
the steroids and admitted later that he lied about the
steroids and those things. There were obviously the issues of racism.
These tapes of him, you know, using language that not okay,
and he took a beating for it, certainly in the
later part of his life. But he passed away last

(10:54):
week on Thursday of ultimately cardiac arrest. I don't know
if they've decided what caused it, if this was just
a specific cardiac event, or if it was anything to
do with anything else going on with him medically. And
I don't know that it's really our business short of
it saying, oh, this is a side effect of that
steroid use that he lied about, And I don't know

(11:16):
that we're ever going to find that out. But the
point is hul Coogan passed and for the most part,
in most sports media, they have treated him like this
icon that he was, with reverence, with respect. Sure there
was a time and a place for the things that

(11:37):
he said when he was alive. He's not here anymore
to defend that, and I don't know that he's ever
defended it. I think he's apologized publicly for it, and
over the past several years been a very outspoken born
again Christian. He was baptized a few years ago. He's
talked about trying to spread his faith to other people.

(12:00):
Those people was the wrestler Roddy Piper, who he said
that they didn't get along at all when they were wrestling,
and that Roddy Piper, I guess ultimately became a Christian
before he passed away. And he said that he got
a message from Roddy Piper, a voicemail that he says
he got from him after he had passed away, and
he thinks that it was from Beyond. I mean a

(12:23):
wild story, and Hogan tells it that like it sounds
like he believes it. Being a wrestler, being a performer,
you know, maybe he's selling it better than other people would,
but he certainly seems like he believed the story. And
then there's social media that used its opportunity to just

(12:43):
attack him relentlessly since he's passed away. One a wrestler
from the WWE, Chelsea Green, has actually left social media.
She says there was too much backlash from people because
she basically called him an absolute eye and people said,
you know, he got involved in the election and he

(13:06):
supported Trump, and he said racist things in the past,
and he's despicable and he's horrible human being and he
deserves to die, and those kinds of things floating around
on social media, which brings me to my point today.
First of all, if we can't have some respect and
reverence for an athlete, and I understand we're talking about wrestling,
but these guys are athletes in so many ways. Professional

(13:31):
wrestlers are like they're almost like straight out of comic books.
They're colorful characters. You know, they're doing these superhuman feats
in the ring. Sure there's a script involved to some degree,
and it's not script by script. There's you know, predetermined
outcome things that you don't really talk about. But they

(13:53):
have to put on this performance and they have to
put their bodies on the line at times, their lives
on the line so that they can do these these performances,
these shows. They're very much circus entertainers in some way,
but they're also very much athletes. And it's insulting to
try to take something that was said, which, by the way,

(14:14):
many wrestlers, many non white wrestlers, have defended him in
this time, saying, you know what, that was a long
time ago, wasn't okay. One of the people that he
said language about that he shouldn't have said was The Rock,
who had a nice tribute to him on social media.
And I guess my question is this, and I realize

(14:36):
I'm borderline kind of doing the same thing, but It
does make me wonder because one of the conversations that
comes up about and this isn't fresh after his death,
this is now many years later. But we have this
tendency sometimes where we will forget some of the horrible
things that people did or were accused of doing. When

(14:58):
you start having conversations about about, you know, the greatest
ever in basketball, and when I hear people talk about
Kobe Bryant, I think people forget that he was actually
accused of raping someone and that there was a settlement
that was done. And then he went on TV and
he gave an apology that was really kind of an admission.

(15:20):
If you go back and you listen to what he
said during that apology, he's basically saying, eh, I didn't
realize that's what I was doing, but apparently that's what
I was doing. I mean, that's kind of what he said.
That's the way it sounded to me, and so sounded
to a lot of people. And then he was just
we just kind of moved on because he was really
good at basketball, and we collectively moved on, and then

(15:42):
he died in this horrible way, and we just kind
of forgot about any of the bad stuff. That's a
pretty bad thing. I'm not defending anybody using racist language
by any means. Hogan himself had a I think he
was he extorted, like he had a tape someone had

(16:03):
recorded him with them having some personal time, and they
tried to extort him. And I don't think they ended
up paying them or whatever the result was of all that.
But I think we should for just a minute, address
the fact that there are a lot of people that
we look at with reverence. I don't know that we

(16:26):
ever really got answers on the whole ray Lewis Atlanta thing,
did we. Ray Lewis was an outst I mean, Kobe
Bryant was, you know, yes, one of the great basketball
players of all time. Ray Lewis one of the greatest
linebackers to ever play the game of football. Completely this
is just two examples, but these are both people that

(16:46):
we've just kind of ignored the fact that, you know,
somebody got killed in Atlanta and there were accusations, maybe
not that ray Lewis did anything, but that he was
somehow involved in cleaning things up. I don't know what
the real story is. I don't know that we ever

(17:06):
got answers. Did we ever get answers to that, or
do we just move on from that and go, man,
that guy can play football some circumstances, we don't do that.
Ray Lewis is still alive, and I'm not accusing him
of anything. I'm just pointing out the fact that there
was a point where people went I think ray Lewis
might have held hot a body. We never found that

(17:28):
suit he was wearing that night, Like later he was
seen in a different suit. Why wasn't he still wearing
that white suit? Those were things that were said, And
again I'm not saying that he did anything wrong, but
I just assume that on the day that he dies,
that's not going to be the first thing that's brought up.

(17:49):
I'm going to assume that probably no one else is
ever going to bring up the whole rape accusation thing
with Kobe Bryant. Nobody talks about it. People happily go
out and buy his jersey and wear it and T
shirts and talk about what a hero he was. They're
all flawed human beings, these pro athletes, they all are.

(18:12):
And if we're going to focus on a period of
time for a whole Cogan or we're going to focus
on his political stance. God forbid somebody take a political
stance that's not popular. Apparently it's more popular than we
thought it was, at least when he was doing it.
It did take guts to stand up there and endorse
Trump on, rip his shirt off and have on the

(18:34):
Trump shirt. It did so. I say this a whole Cogan.
When I was around him, he was a nice guy,
loved his daughter, loved his family, loved his son, loved
his family. And it took time out of his day
to reach out to the Iron Cheek when he knew

(18:55):
Sheic was going through something tough and called him. I
heard part of the conversation, and then he stepped away
and they had a private conversation. And I can tell
you this. A few months later, I saw the Iron
Cheek and he ran up to me and thanked me
for making that happen, told me what a good guy
Hogan was after all the horrible things he'd said about him.

(19:15):
It doesn't make everything okay. Does it take away anything
that happened behind the scenes. You know it does. When
he starts telling us that he's given his life to Jesus,
that he got baptized, that takes away everything. Does it
mean that people aren't going to bring it up? Obviously not.
But the important thing is he says at least he's

(19:38):
professed publicly that he's moved on from those things in
his life and he was living a new life. And
I'm glad that at least we have the assurance that
he did that. And while it's sad, seventy one is
really young for somebody who fitness was a big thing,
and I know he did a lot of things to

(19:58):
his body over the years. I know he did. He
talked about that, he's talked about the steroids, he's talked
about some of the things that he did, and a
lot of wrestlers die young. But I do get some
reassurance in knowing that he made that decision and then
he put those other things behind him, even if social

(20:22):
media is not ever going to let that happen. Today's
show brought to you by Columbus State University's Coca Cola
Space Science Center.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
Hey everyone, this is doctor Sean Crusin. I'm the executive
director of Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center.
I want to tell you about a very special exhibit
that we have on display the summer. It's so big
that it can't even fit in our own exhibit gallery.
It's just too many pieces.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
This is a.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
Collection of items from the personal collection of astronaut David R. Scott.
Dave Scott flew on Gemini eight with Neil Armstrong, he
flew on Apollo nine dress rehearsal for the moon landing,
and then most importantly perhaps he commanded Apollo fifteen, where
he became the first person to ever drive a car
on the service of the Moon. Because Dave's brother, Tom

(21:12):
lived and worked here in Columbus, Georgia, with our Columbus
Chamber of Commerce, we got to be good friends with Tom.
Tom has coordinated a very generous donation of artifacts and
memorabilia from the Scott Brothers collection to us here at
Coca Cola Space Science Center. And again that's that collection
got so overwhelmingly large we couldn't put it on display here.

(21:33):
That's why we're doing the exhibit at the Bow Bartlet Center.
They are open from eleven am to four pm Tuesday
through Saturday. Go down and check out this great exhibit
on display at the Bow Bartlet Center. Check out all
the other wonderful pieces of artwork down there as well,
and then come visit us here at Columbus State University's
Coca Cola Space Science Center.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
Today show brought to you by Overhead Door Company of
Columbus for all of your garage door needs, commercial or resident.
Maybe you have regular maintenance that it's time for. It's
always good to get maintenance on anything that has parts
that move and have electronics. The folks at Overhead Door
Company of Columbus can take care of square in that

(22:14):
away for you, and while they're there, you can always
ask them questions about some of the maybe cosmetic changes
you'd like to make to your garage door. Maybe your
curb appeal isn't quite what you want it to be
and you need some repair work done to the outside door.
Maybe you need a brand new garage door completely. Maybe
it's making a noise when your garage door opens and closes.

(22:36):
Maybe it's some sort of insulation issue that you've got
with colder or warmer weather. Sometimes that stuff gets in
and it's inconvenient. Maybe you're looking at a situation where
you'd like to add a screen door to your garage
door system that you can put down and you can
use your garage space as a sort of outdoor but indoor.
You know, if you like to work on your own

(22:57):
cars in there, or maybe you just want a little
man cavid, you'd like to be able to open the
door up and not invite all the insects in. They
can do that for you as well. And again they
do after hours calls. There's nothing worse than that thought
of having your car trapped inside your garage and your
garage door won't open and you need somebody to come help,
and they do those as well. Seven oh six three

(23:19):
five eight forty five hundred. Seven oh six three five
eight forty five hundred O dccolumbus dot com. More West
Carol Morning Show right after the break. I know, just
the other day we were giving you a report on

(23:41):
popular ice cream flavors or the most popular ice cream flavor,
and we have another report on this. So I just
think it's fair we represent the flavors that win the
polls correctly. So here we go. Recent data that comes

(24:03):
from Instacart says the most popular flavor of ice cream
across the US. Now we just told you chocolate was
number one. I don't remember whose pole that was. Now
we've got instacarts, which says no, no, no, not so fast.
Chocolate's number two, Vanilla is number one, Cookies and cream three,

(24:23):
strawberry four, which is higher than it was on the
other pole as well. That seems like the real top
four to me. That's just my impression, and I realize
I'm just gauging off of my gut. That seems like
an accurate representation of the top four. Number five mint
chip or mint chocolate chip. That probably is about right

(24:46):
to me. I know there's some other flavors that could
be up there at five. Cookie dough, coffee, butter, pecan, neapolitan,
and peanut butter. Chocolate is in the tenth spot, and
this is according to instacar, based on what people are ordering.
So there you go. Now, I realize we could slant

(25:08):
this just a little bit. If somebody, if a lot
of people that like vanilla just buy a lot of it,
then maybe it's one person buying two or three times
as much vanilla as some of the other flavors. So
just keep that in mind. But I think it's safe
to say vanilla and chocolate are certainly at the top,
and that's a fair thing. Four signs that you have

(25:30):
what's called a minimal effort partner. So you get this right,
a partner that is just doing the absolute minimum in
the relationship. They're not they're not going, they're not doing
anything above and beyond, all right, And this is the

(25:51):
thing people are talking about now online where they talk
about you know, people get into a relationship and they realize, man,
the other person's putting no effort in at all. Are
these are signs that maybe you're in that relationship if
they don't prioritize communication, all right, that's fairs. If you're
in a relationship where people don't prioritize communication, that you

(26:12):
probably have some issues going on there. But yes, minimal effort.
They don't talk about the relationship specifically, they avoid that,
they don't make any plans for anything for you to do,
and they don't show up for you. If those four things,
this is, according to experts, the four signs. So according
to experts, you could need some counseling help and that

(26:37):
could be something that could help you maybe potentially actually
have a more fulfilling relationship with somebody who puts in
some effort, not just minimal effort. So uber has added
a female driver option This seems like something that's a
little like should have been done a long time ago.
Remember there were some issues where some questions about and

(27:00):
conduct or people getting in the wrong car and these
kind of things. Well, Uber, I guess, based on popular demand,
has rolled out the long requested feature in the US,
so let's women choose to be matched with female drivers.
Option has been available in forty countries over the past
six years, and will be tested over the next few
weeks in Detroit, LA and San Francisco. Should things go

(27:22):
according to plan, the women Preferences feature will eventually expand
across the US, giving both the rider and driver some
control and sense of safety. There are some situations where
I would say this reeks of something foul, but in
this circumstance, this seems like if it makes everybody comfortable,

(27:43):
I think we need things where people feel comfortable. I
think that's important. Does it mean they're definitely should feel comfortable.
Maybe not, but it's giving them that option and if
that makes them more comfortable with their ride, then so
be it. According to a new Internet national study, switching
to a four day work week with no pay cut

(28:03):
led to major improvements in employee well being Researchers tracked
nearly three thousand workers across one hundred and forty one
companies and found the employees reported better mental health, reduced burnout,
even improved sleep and physical health. The arrangement was also
a win for companies. They say productivity didn't suffer and
it actually improved. So there you go, all right. Finally,

(28:28):
one thing they say you should never ever do on
a plane. Travel experts agree taking off your shoes is
a no no. They say, first of all, it's a
safety hazard, especially during takeoff and landing if there was
a problem and you had to get off the plane
and you had to run out on the hot tarmac

(28:48):
with no shoes on. They say it's gross for people
around you. Nobody wants to see or smell your feet.
And they say it's also gross for you. And you
wouldn't take off your shoes on a subway or bus,
would you. And it's public transportation. So yes, floors are dirty,
very dirty, So keep all those kind of things in mind.
And it's as possible there could be glass on the

(29:09):
floor or something that could actually hurt you, so don't
typically do it on planes. I must admit I've done
it on international planes, but usually airlines like Quantas will
provide you a little pair of socks that you can
wear while you're on the plane. I don't go barefoot
on the plane. I definitely don't do that. But there
you go. All right, that'll do it for this Monday
edition of the show. Thanks to our sponsors and Patronspatreon
