Speaker 1 (00:01):
And now stay tuned for the program that has rated
tops in popularity for a longer period of time than
any other West Coast program in radio history, The Signal
Oil Program, The Whistler Signal, the famous Go Father Gasoline.

(00:28):
Invite you to sit back and enjoy another strange story
by the Whistler.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
I am the Whistler, and I know many things.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
For I walk by night.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
I know many strange tales hidden in the hearts of
men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yes,
I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
And now for the Signal Oil Company, the Whistler's strange story,
fateful reminder.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Phil Alexander slammed the phone receiver down angrily, ignored the
puzzled look on Elaine Clyde's face, and slowly studied the
room in which the two of them sat.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
It was Phil's own office.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
His reward for fifteen years of service in the interest
of Minnick's distinguished jewelers, and now he was Proprietor James
Minnick's right hand man. He was also the favorite of
wealthy women, women like Elaine Clyve seated across the desk
from it, but that wasn't all about Phil Alexander. No,

(02:04):
the phone call he just completed was a far more
accurate yardstick of what he was really like down inside
that call from al Farino reminding Phil of a ten
thousand dollar gambling debt.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
Phil, what on? It's the hum? Oh nothing, Elaine?

Speaker 5 (02:22):
Really another client as demanding his eyes.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
Oh no, nothing like that. Oh about the ring mounting?
Do you like it?

Speaker 5 (02:30):
I do very much. Your designer does such distinguished work.
Aren't you going to talk me in to buy it?

Speaker 4 (02:37):
You know? And I didn't want you to buy anything
that doesn't please you.

Speaker 5 (02:40):
Of course you don't, Dear. I'm afraid you're not in
a joking mood to night. That phone call really distressed
you didn't?

Speaker 4 (02:48):
Now, Please, don't you worry about it?

Speaker 6 (02:50):
I shan't, and I'm going to get your mind off
it too. I'm having a little party tomorrow night. Suppose
you come and make it a success to.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
Moor night sounds fine.

Speaker 5 (03:00):
I'll be there at eight sill, dear until tomorrow night.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
There tomorrow night, mister Alexander. Huh yeah, that's a nice dog.
She look expensive?

Speaker 4 (03:18):
Who are you?

Speaker 3 (03:19):
He likes mister Alexander. Feerno sent me over.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
You can't come and hear my place of business.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
But I did com in. You see, Ferino don't like
farms banged up in his ears, and he wants his dog.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
What does he think I'm gonna get it?

Speaker 7 (03:31):
Well, that's not his problem. Tell you what, though, I'll
give you a lead. Why don't you bring the dollar
just left down to the tables tonight. We can fix it,
so should drop at.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
Least ten geez, then you'll be square.

Speaker 7 (03:44):
You get out of here, okay, sure, all right, Foster
till Friday night? Anyway, Friday night, Yeah, eleven shot Ferino's place.
But I'm telling you what f Reno said Friday night
at eleven.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
You pay up, it pay off, mister Allie said.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
You stand there watch him saunter off. And yet this
anonymous little man has served you with what might be
a death warrant. You try to imagine what Elaine Clyde's
reaction would be if you suddenly asked her for a
loan of ten thousand dollars. And your employer, James Minnick,
you know what he'd do if he had any idea
that his trusted assistant even knew any one involved with gambling.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
Oh, Phil, will you come into the office a minute.
Oh yes, mister Minnick, right away. I'd chap you were
just talking with a possible new client. Oh no, I
don't think so. I'm afraid our prices are too high
for him. Frankly, I hope they are well. Come on
in a moment, all right, sir, Elizabeth hold the phone calls,

(04:57):
will you cause mister Minnick? Sit down, Phil, sit down,
Thank you, sir. I wanted to talk with you before
the annual employees dinner to night. Something rather startling has
come up, Phil. Startling, sir, Yes, that's a small word

(05:17):
for it. I suppose there's no easy way to say this, sir.
You know what a sticker I am for personal honesty integrity.
I yes, of course I do, mister Minnick. I can't
afford to have people working for me whose integrity I
no longer respect. What are you trying to say, mister Minnick.
What would you say, Phil if you thought one of

(05:39):
your most trusted employees was no longer worthy of your trust?
I I don't know. I guess there isn't much to say. Er.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
If you don't have a new car, then, like most
of us, you no doubt wish you did well. Here's
a tip. The next best thing to a spankin new
car is a car of any age powered with signal
ethyl gasoline. Yes, the premium grade of signals famous go
Farther gasoline is a true super fuel, scientifically engineered to
bring out the best in any car of any age.

(06:26):
And when I say best, I mean the kind of
performance many drivers never thought their cars capable of. I
mean pick up, the thrilling kind that makes the back
of the seat come up and nudge you forward. And
I mean power the kind that hoists you smoothly easily
over hills that used to call for shifting. Don't get
the idea, of course, that signal ethel's going to let

(06:47):
you step away from all new cars. After all, Smart
new car drivers use signal ethel too to bring out
all the exciting performance that's built into today's power packed,
high compression motors. But of this you can be sure.
The next best thing to a new car is your
car powered with Signal ethel gasoline.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
It's difficult to believe, isn't it, Phil, But apparently James
Minnick has discovered your association with al Farino. You stand
there stunned, unable to speak, your mind spinning, wondering if
your employer also knows of the ten thousand dollars you
must pay for Reno and soon. And as he speaks,
you realize mister Minnick is looking at you and watching

(07:48):
your face.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
I hear. I don't blame you for looking so surprised. Phil.
I found the knowledge that one of my trusted employees
was stealing almost incredible myself. What are you going to do?
Nothing immediately? In matters of this kind, it's important to
be absolutely certain of the facts. Yes, I want to
be very sure, Minnie. Yes, Elizabeth.

Speaker 8 (08:11):
I'm sorry to disturb you, sir, but there's a man
outside about the employees banquet tonight.

Speaker 5 (08:15):
He said you wanted to go over the final arrangement.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
Oh that's right, I do all right, in just a moment, Yes, sir,
I i'd appreciate it if you wait for me, Phil,
I think it might be a good idea if you
and I went to the employee's dinner together. If I
don't get a chance to see you before, then we
can finish our talk afterwards. Certainly, mister Minnick, I'll wait

(08:39):
for you.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
You can't run, can you, Phil? You know if mister
Minnick has found you out, no amount of running away
can save you, because if mister Minnick doesn't find you,
farino will. Mister Minnick is unable to see you again
before the annual employees dinner, and as it progresses, you
toy with your food. Half listen as mister Minnick delivers

(09:07):
the familiar speech he makes every year about the rewards
of honest endeavor the value of personal intiguity. But then
something he says pulls you up short.

Speaker 4 (09:17):
Ah, this is more than just our annual dinner tonight.
It's well, it's an occasion. I've been advised by my
position to take a few months off. Missus Minnick and
I are sailing to Hawaii, and while I'm gone, I'm
placing the full responsibility of the store in the capable
hands of Phil Alexander. How about a word, Phil? Why?

(09:42):
I don't know what to say except well, thanks, mister Minnick.
Never mind, Phil. Just to know you'll be here while
I'm gone is all I need to know. And now, everybody,
we're here for some fun. Enjoy yourselves. There's music for dancing,
everything you want.

Speaker 8 (10:02):
Have a good friend, or must I call you mister Alexander.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
Fine with me, Elizabeth. Excuse me, Elizabeth. I'll send Phil
back to the party in the moment. I want to
give him some fatherly advice. Right now, we won't belong Well,
Phil surprised, I certainly was. I hope you enjoy you
a trip, mister Minnick, You've earned a rest, all right, Yeah,

(10:28):
that's what missus Minnix is. We'll say this Saturday. Uh Now, Phil,
that dishonesty matter I brought up late this afternoon. My
timing was none too good, but I had to share
it with someone I knew I could trust. I hope
I didn't concern you too much. Well, I I found
it hard to believe, sir, I know know Ordinarily I

(10:50):
wouldn't burden you with it, but since you'll be in charge,
I want you to keep a very close eye on Elizabeth.
Elizabeth is shocking. Shocking is She's been with me so long,
almost as long as you feel it, and yet she's
the only one besides myself who has the combination to
the vault. Oh you've missed some jewelry? Is at it? Yes?

(11:13):
Small things, nothing really expensive. Yet I uh, I somehow
find it impossible to confront her with it. Oh, perhaps
she isn't guilty at all, But if she is, I
want a court of course cartony acumen. Yes, now, I
hate to burden you with this, Phil, but I probably
won't be in the store before I leave. And after all,

(11:35):
who else can I trust?

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Your mind spends again, Phil, Because even as James Minnick
handure the combination to the jewelry store vault and tells
you to keep a close watch on his secretary Elizabeth,
he's handing you a solution to your own problem, isn't he. Yes,
if he suspects Elizabeth and trusts you, it will be
a simple matter of your word against hers. James Minnick

(12:07):
is played right into your hands, hasn't he filled? And
as you return to the company party, you've already a
half formed plan in your mind concerning Elizabeth.

Speaker 8 (12:16):
Oh there you are, feel don't you think you should
at least say the last waltz for your new secretary?

Speaker 4 (12:22):
I was thinking about that too.

Speaker 5 (12:24):
Oh you promised the dance to miss the Minnick.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
No not, it's been swimming in the punch bowl since
I saw you last night.

Speaker 5 (12:31):
I was going here, but they tricked this.

Speaker 8 (12:33):
The punch has no punch, pure fruit use our nursing.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
Why, miss Elizabeth, I believe they're playing our song.

Speaker 5 (12:42):
I bribe the leader, Joe of God, Elizabeth.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
I know a place where the far more interesting punchbowl
you do. They filled the punch bowl with popcorn and
serve your rare old native drinks like scotch and water.

Speaker 5 (13:02):
Sounds great, it is, and.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Rare old native musicians play rare native tunes like.

Speaker 5 (13:07):
Ragma Mini's Shadow with a sense of humor.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
I don't let's go.

Speaker 5 (13:12):
I'll I like your natives.

Speaker 4 (13:27):
There are they?

Speaker 5 (13:29):
You know you really had any food? I didn't know you.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
Were human more.

Speaker 8 (13:34):
I don't believe I knew you could talk either, except
to say yes sir, mister Minnick, and yes ma'am missus Klown.

Speaker 5 (13:42):
Oh now look, okay, I've gone too far.

Speaker 9 (13:44):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 4 (13:44):
Missus Klein is a good client of Minnigs. It's my
job to keep her that way. That song. She's just
a client food, just a client, Elizabeth.

Speaker 5 (13:53):
I'd like to be able to count on that.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
I'd like you too.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
It's going well, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (14:07):
Phil.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
You're certain now you'll have no trouble with Elizabeth. Her
interest in you is obvious and for the first time
in weeks. You feel sure of yourself. Don't you late
that night as you return to your apartment your confidence
is sorry.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
Then I'll celebrating film Farino. Good those tribals.

Speaker 7 (14:29):
First, Phil, I heard about mister Minnick leaving you in
charge of the store while he's away.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
That's five, Phil, Fine.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
Look for Reino. Now that you know you'll get the
ten thousand? Can you give me to Monday? Mister Minnick
sailing Saturday. I wouldn't want to do anything before.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
He left town.

Speaker 7 (14:49):
I'll tell you, servent, Phil, the Friday night figure is
ten grand.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
By Monday, it's twenty.

Speaker 4 (14:56):
Look you can't do that.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
No try me.

Speaker 4 (14:59):
But it isn't going to simple to get to ten, and.

Speaker 7 (15:03):
It could get a lot more complicated if I saw
mister Minnick before we left, couldn't it?

Speaker 4 (15:08):
Bill? He wouldn't do that. Where would it.

Speaker 7 (15:10):
Get you off the hook for parks like you who'll
get no business playing the wheel?

Speaker 3 (15:16):
I want my dough Friday night.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
Phil, No, lady, he means it doesn't he philed. Friday
night is your absolute deadline, and Farino isn't letting you
forget it for a moment. There's very little time The
next morning is Thursday, and after a sleepless night, you

(15:41):
arrive at the store early before anyone else. In James
Minnick's private office, you go immediately to the vault, quickly
work the combination.

Speaker 4 (15:50):
There's cash on hand, yes.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
But not nearly ten thousand dollars, and the jewelry is
all marked for delivery to clients that day. You don't
dare disturb it. By mid morning, immersed in store problems,
you find yourself trembling, looking up nervously, constantly fearful that
Farino or another of his men will walk in on you.
It's while you're making a quick tour of the display

(16:14):
rooms that you finally do notice a strange man loitering about,
and it takes all the nerve you can summon to
approach him.

Speaker 10 (16:22):
Yes, oh, mister Alexander, that's right, I have a message
for you. Can we talk on private.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
See here, I've had enough of these messages as you
described them.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
Oh yeah, yeah, and.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
My private office is not provided for such negotiations. Now,
if you'll.

Speaker 10 (16:36):
Kind of manners, I don't think you understand.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
I understand that I want you to get out of here. Look,
the boss says, I know what your boss said, tell
him I'll have the money for him Friday, somehow, someway,
Oh came mister Alexander.

Speaker 10 (16:50):
Oh one other thing.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
You sure you know what I'm certainly I know. Tomorrow night,
eleven sharp at for Reno's place. I'll have the ten thousand.
Now get out of here.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
You watch him go. Phil, curse Farino for hounding you
as you start back towards your office. Go inside. You're
vaguely aware that Elizabeth is speaking to.

Speaker 5 (17:13):
You, Phil, Missus Clyde is on the phone.

Speaker 8 (17:16):
Oh okay, if you take it on my phone, I'll
here just your end of the conversation.

Speaker 5 (17:19):
If you take it in minutes, all this, I'll be
a booth.

Speaker 4 (17:22):
I'll take it here. Hello, Missus Clyde.

Speaker 5 (17:27):
Hello, mister Alexander. Mire so formal today, aren't we?

Speaker 4 (17:31):
Why?

Speaker 5 (17:31):
No, I am kidding you. Phil. You haven't forgotten about tonight,
have you?

Speaker 4 (17:35):
Tonight?

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (17:37):
My, you have forgotten my party this evening eight o'clock.
I asked you when I was in the store yesterday.

Speaker 4 (17:42):
Oh, yes, of course, I'll.

Speaker 5 (17:44):
Send Charles around for you. About a quarter of that,
all right with you?

Speaker 4 (17:47):
Yes, it's fine, wonderful deer.

Speaker 5 (17:49):
I'll see you tonight.

Speaker 4 (17:50):
I look forward to it. Goodbye bye.

Speaker 5 (17:55):
You know I think I like your other side, the
other one I saw last night.

Speaker 4 (17:59):
Huh oh, sure we'll have to do it often, Elizabeth.

Speaker 5 (18:15):
Dear, you're not having any fun.

Speaker 4 (18:17):
Of course, I am Elain, and everyone enjoys your partner
just the same.

Speaker 6 (18:20):
I'm afraid you're taking your new responsibilities at the store
too seriously.

Speaker 4 (18:23):
Perhaps that's it.

Speaker 6 (18:25):
I know something that will put that old gleam back
in your eye. Come on in the library, all right,
sit down at the desk, Bill.

Speaker 5 (18:35):
I want you to see these in a proper setting.
The light's better there.

Speaker 4 (18:38):
You being pretty mysterious.

Speaker 5 (18:42):
Can I trust you not to watch the combination to
my wall?

Speaker 3 (18:45):
Say?

Speaker 4 (18:46):
Yes, I think so.

Speaker 5 (18:48):
I'm not worried. Now then, what do you think of
these good heavenly nay, sad thing.

Speaker 4 (19:01):
They're unbelievable diamonds, sapphire's.

Speaker 6 (19:05):
Emeralds, not many of each, of course, But I did
think they might make a nice bracelet.

Speaker 4 (19:09):
Hi, I'm sure they would.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
Now.

Speaker 5 (19:11):
I want you to take them.

Speaker 3 (19:12):
Take them to Jacques at the store, Darling.

Speaker 6 (19:15):
Let him study them, work out the bracelet design. When
it's ready, I'll stop by and see it.

Speaker 4 (19:20):
But about the gems.

Speaker 5 (19:21):
Can't you keep them in the vault at store for me?

Speaker 4 (19:23):
Oh? Certainly, we'll be glad to Why not have Charles
deliver them to Miss Patten in the morning, Miss Patton
and mister Minnick Secretary Elizabeth Patton checking things in and
out of the vault is her job. Even if you
sent them to me, I'd have to turn them over
to her, all.

Speaker 6 (19:38):
Right, Phil, If that's the procedure, I'll send them in tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
Good Now, let's get back to your party, shall we.
I promise you I'll be a model guest the rest
of the evening.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
It's a break, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (19:57):
Phil?

Speaker 2 (19:58):
You know enough about gems to ask to make the
value of Elaine Clyde's collection. You'll have no trouble fencing,
You're certain of that, and the amount you can raise
from one to two will more than cover your gambling
debt to Alfarino. You please, don't you, Phil, Because your
plan is so simple, so easy. The Clyde gems will
be delivered to Elizabeth in the morning. She'll put them

(20:20):
in the vault, and once any of them are missing,
you're certain all the evidence of theft will point to her.
You're at the office Friday morning, confident that you'll be
able to keep your eleven PM appointment with Farino and
keep on living in the body.

Speaker 8 (20:36):
Good morning, Elizabeth, Oh Morningville for your party last night.

Speaker 5 (20:39):
Must have agreed.

Speaker 4 (20:40):
We feel fine, so fine. In fact, I'd like to
have dinner with you this evening.

Speaker 5 (20:45):
You know that's nice because I'd like to have dinner
with you too.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
No good, I'm afraid I'll have to run out on
you afterward. Have to have a business appontmcy. But at
least we'll have fun at dinner.

Speaker 5 (20:54):
I'm sure we will.

Speaker 4 (20:55):
We can go from work if that's okay with you. Fine?

Speaker 5 (20:59):
See how agree?

Speaker 2 (21:01):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (21:01):
I almost forgot missus Clyde chauffeur is bringing some stones
in this morning. It wants us to keep them in
the vault for her until our designer makes them into
a bracelet. You'll check them into the vault, won't you.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Why?

Speaker 5 (21:14):
Yes, of course, have you any idea of their value?

Speaker 4 (21:17):
No, we'll have to have them appraised in the next
day or so. Of them, I've got to keep some
appointments for mister Minnick today, so I probably won't be
around until dinner time. If anything comes up.

Speaker 5 (21:28):
Oh my goodness, something did come up.

Speaker 8 (21:30):
I guess it isn't too important, but that man was
around here when I came to work this morning.

Speaker 5 (21:34):
Man, you know the fellow you were talking with yesterday
on a personal matter.

Speaker 4 (21:38):
You said, Oh, did you talk to him?

Speaker 5 (21:42):
No? If he should come back, shall I tell him
anything for you?

Speaker 4 (21:45):
Yes? Tell him alone.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
You spend a profitable day away from the store, don't you, Phil, Yes,
you may come with an established fence in the city.
Describe the stones you'll deliver to him later that evening
and get his assurance that if they are as you say,
you'll easily get the ten thousand dollars you'll require. Early
that evening, you have dinner with Elizabeth, send her home,

(22:14):
see her home afterward, and then set your final plan
into motion.

Speaker 4 (22:19):
You go directly to the.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
Store, let yourself into the darkened building, and make straight
for the vault in mister Minnick's office.

Speaker 5 (22:35):
You really expect to get away with that pill, Elizabeth?

Speaker 8 (22:38):
Honest, I followed that cab as they say, only I
know a short cut get away from that vault.

Speaker 4 (22:44):
Philm you surely don't expect to use that gun.

Speaker 5 (22:47):
If I have to, and I may.

Speaker 8 (22:49):
You made two mistakes, Phil, first in thinking i'd go
for your sudden interest in me after all these years,
And second, when you spent most of the day away
from the office. You see you're mister I for Reno
called to remind you of your appointment tonight. Look, Elizabeth,
I'll take that box of missus Clyde's Phil.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
I have use for what's inside.

Speaker 4 (23:07):
Nnick sunder you. Elizabeth, you're under me. Let's make a deal.

Speaker 8 (23:12):
The box faill hand it over. Minnick will be no concern,
and you little use where I'm going.

Speaker 4 (23:18):
Okay, I'll hand it over. He only made one mistake,
but that one's gonna prove rival well.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
Lieutenant sure adds up just as you tell it, mister Alexander.
Funny you say the girl worked for Minnick's a long time.

Speaker 4 (23:43):
Too, Yes's almost as long as I have. It's terrible.
Mister Minnick was suspicious of her before he left. I
tried my best to watch her. That's why I had
the gun ready. Now you did your best. You couldn't
know she had an accomplice. Didn't get a good look
at him, man, No, no, he managed to leap out
past me. Not the gun from my hand, but not
bere I.

Speaker 2 (24:01):
Know those are jewels. Had partner made off with you
said they were uncut gems?

Speaker 4 (24:05):
Yes, that's the trouble. It will be very difficult.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
To trace them, possible probably, But don't feel badly. Mister
Minnick's insurance will cover the stones. Wouldn't have covered your
life though.

Speaker 4 (24:17):
Yes, you're right. I could have been much worse off
if it had happened differently, much worse off.

Speaker 9 (24:38):
How long will your car last? How long will your
