In the small town of New Essex in 1959, it seemed as though a witch was on trial. Callista Blake, a fiercely independent 19-year-old with an unconventional artistic talent, was accused of poisoning her former lovers wife. Her aloof demeanor, avowed atheism, and irresistible charm made many believe she was guilty. Callista claimed she had mixed the deadly potion for herself in a moment of despair, and couldn’t save the victim who drank it accidentally. The circumstantial evidence was overwhelming, and yet, a few remained convinced of her innocence. This is their story of a fight in the courtroom to save her life. Edgar Pangborn masterfully tells the tale from multiple perspectives, revealing the complexities of human nature and the chilling reality of the justice system.
