Each year we try to give back to our awesome group of fishheads through our Annual GiftAway Extravaganza. This year we chose Waccamaw Outfitters as our venue and a great time was had by all. We were blessed to have Capt. Chris, Capt Matt"The River Rat", Officer Tommy, Chef Richard, Fred "Fish Police" Rourk, and Bassmasters EQ Angler of The Year JT Thompkins join us for the morning. With Waccamw Outfitters as a beautiful back drop, we gave away hundreds of dollars in great gifts and that included gift certificates to many of our partners. With the line up we had, there was lots of great topics and we, once again, are amazed at the maturity of our good friend JT Thompkins, as he shared many thoughts on his 2023 year and the future for himself at the top level of tournament bass fishing. We hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and wish you the Happiest of New Years in 2024. We appreciate each of you for making us the most listened to fishing and hunitng radio show on the Grand Strand!! (we are the only one LOL) Lets all get together and set some great goals for 2024 on and off the water and lets try to focus on meeting these goals and more. City and Georgetown, where every dayis a boat show every day, and

(00:25):
by the Freedom Boat Club where yourboat is waiting, and by Monarch Rupin.
Hey are good friend Bert Williams. And you know that's the one person
that we should have invited to comehang out. We know he's you know
what he's doing right now. He'ssitting eating breakfast listen to us on the
radio, yep, watching over theocean right now. I'm where you better
believe it, so you follow himon Facebook. Oh yeah, Well,

(00:47):
we are at walk the Mall Outfittersfor our ninth annual, ninth Annual Big
Christmas Extravaganza and gift Away. Andwe've got a lot of wonderful things here
to give away. We got alot of wonderful things for with purchases.
In other words, come over hereand knock out your Christmas list. And

(01:07):
while we've got Captain Matt over herewith us, let's talk about walking all
outfitters and all the great Christmas optionsthat somebody can come knock that list out.
You and I talk this week. You sent me a list over.
Let's talk about some of those things. You know. We've got turtle boxes
on special bam. I mean,that's a that's a hot gift item this
year. They're well worth the moneythat they are. Loud flow. You

(01:30):
got one, Yeah, I do. I've got two of them. And
then you demonstrated it to me acouple of weeks ago. And I'm gonna
tell you what, I had totake my hearing ad off. It was
so loud. I mean, we'vegot catch to fever fishing rods. We've
got the hell cat you know, all you cat fishermen. We got the
hellcats here. All of our apparel. We've got ocean tamer bean bags.

(01:52):
Let me tell you it was madefor a great ride out. Oh boy,
do they anybody that has whoever cameup with who came up with the
idea think of it? Who said, let's Fred Fred's here too. We've
got Chef Richard in the house.Uh fishhead James. The og of fishhead
is in the house. But whocame up with it? Fred? I
wonder if it was it a KingMichael Fisherman, you would almost have to

(02:15):
think, oh yeah, you wouldalmost have to think, well, I
tell us, you know the bestthing about them, they're not only for
fishing. No, we got ridof our furniture out around the pool and
I have all my fishing bean bagsout there, and that's a great idea.
Weather you don't have to worry aboutthem. And so it's not only
for fishing. Are these the onesthat float too? They do? They

(02:36):
do float. I mean they're notused as floating, you know, if
they blow out the boat or something. Yeah, they're gonna float. But
you need it, you know, you can't just lounge around in the water
wheel. So I'm gonna just saythis real quick. In our National Championship
excursion that we made to Southport onthe day that was from Hell that we
were on, I looked at McClure, who is under my watch when we

(02:57):
were fishing, and I said,McClure, I want you to re number
one thing. If you go outthis boat or this boat goes over,
swim straight to the bean bag andhold on. Yes, because there is
a a handle on it and youcan wrap your arm in it and hold
on. Of course, I don'tknow when them nine footers if it would
have made much of a difference, but it would have been helped. It
would have helped. But yes, bean bags are incredible. But anyway,

(03:21):
let's talk about you mentioned a turtleboxreal quick. Do we have a little
contest for a turtlebox? Did wedo? Yeah? Well, so we
had a you're gonna have to comeget it. You're gonna have to show
up, that's all. No,No, no, absolutely they do.
But I think we had an anonymousdonor who has donated a turtle box,
and that is going to be awith purchase contest. In other words,

(03:44):
you come in and we're going tosay this, you got to buy at
least one of Captain Matt's one hundreddollars buckets. Now what we're talking about
here, Matt made a deal.Matt did a deal. Basically, you
get a walk them all outfitter's bucket, go shopping. You get twenty five
percent off if you buy over onehundred dollars in that bucket. That's not
that hard. We've got a bucketbottle special, you know, one hundred
dollars or more. My shopping assistantto the right of me doesn't even realize

(04:09):
he's been complaining about shopping not shopping. Well, he doesn't realize it.
I'm giving him a bucket and he'sgot to go fill it up with one
hundred dollars worth of stuff because we'regetting into contest. By the way,
you're eligible too. Just let youWe talked about this, he and I
were texting already. We made theexecutive decision that we're eligible. If we
spend the money, we're eligible.Yes, So yeah, I'm sending Russ

(04:29):
shopping. But I know we've talkedto a lot of people that are coming
out today, and we're gonna behere till twelve. Well, we'll be
here till twelve. I know youguys will probably be here longer. We're
gonna be here till twelve. Andwe have a special guest also that's gonna
be joining us here shortly, andthat is JT. Tompkins. We've talked,
he's been on the show with usbefore. We talked about him a
lot. He's one of our own. We say that he's from here in

(04:50):
Myrtle Beach and he is the oneof the hottest tickets in bass fishing,
one angler of the year in allthe open division this year and uh qualified
number one for the Elite Series nextyear. And uh he is bringing out
some of his FX custom rods thathe's representing now and gonna have those,

(05:11):
and uh he's gonna give a castingdemonstration and also gonna let you try to
cast his rods. And now we'rehoping that he doesn't give the bait caster
to the wrong people. But hedoes have some spinning rods set up here,
even raised his hands for that.I need bait casting tutorial for suthing.
But my good friend ed Pietrowski lastnight and I were texting while I
was in the deer stand and whilehe was trying to get the weather situated.

(05:33):
He may make an appearance as well. Hopefully he comes over knocks out
some shopping lists. But if nothingelse, he did share it on Facebook,
I heard, and when that happens, it's like viral if you can
get ed to share something that goesviral. So we're hoping we get a
good crowd over here, and uh, we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna have
a great time. We're gonna playsome games. We got a lot of
We do have some giveaways for peoplethat don't purchase. You may show up

(05:58):
and we do have some giveaways forthem as well that include hats, shirts,
gift cards and various things. Andwe also have two fifty dollars gift
cards to walk them on. OutfitterCome outfitters. Yeah, so, and
those are with purchase as well.I think are we gonna give We're gonna
give them away. If you showup, they're gonna get a fifty dollars
gift card. Okay, so we'regonna have some weight. I mean,
if you're an earshot, I wouldsuggest you get over here to walk on

(06:21):
my outfitters of Colin Marine. Idid, Oh, I agree, I
agree. I'm looking around there. He is Donnee Smith in the house,
the founder, recent founder thanks tosome screwball and whatever else, recent founder
of the Kayak Association here, theGrand Stread Association. And we'll get him
home here to join with us todaytoo. He's got some tournament stuff into

(06:43):
works and doing a great job withthat. But we're just excited as Christmas
and uh, you know, Igot a deer story to tell. I
don't know if I want to tellit now. I know Lucas is listening.
But last night I harvested my firstbuck of the year, first year
of the year period, and itwas a it was a traumatic experience.
Sounds like it you told me aboutthat. It was. And I'll tell

(07:05):
you one thing that I have alwayssaid in deer hunting, and and and
this is just my opinion. MaybeI'm I'm wrong, but I think the
easiest part of deer hunting is pullingthe trigger. I think for most people
the easiest part is to pull thetrigger. It's I think the hardest thing
is to not pull the trigger onsome You know, here's the deal.

(07:28):
You can't eat antlers or horns. As somebody said earlier, you can't eat
antlers. They don't taste good,so it doesn't really matter. But if
you manage a place for trophy andfor nice bucks, you're gonna typically let
younger bucks walk. And we atlost she I'll say where it is at
Los. She had a beautiful sixpointer that did not have brow times,

(07:50):
and a young lady early in theseason shot at said deer, and unfortunately
her scope and they realized it towardsher scope had had had come off,
had moved, so she made aleg shot unfortunately did not hit any vitals.
And this deer showed up on mygame camera out there early on,

(08:16):
and we started watching this deer andit dropped. It went down to about
eighty pounds, maybe a little bitmore ribs, and I've got pictures of
it that head to head with acoyote, which we caught. For sure
it was not going to survive thatnight, and so it did. And

(08:37):
in the last three weeks, thisdeer has put on weight. And you
know, while all the pictures thatwe have you see this left leg up,
you don't ever see it on theground. So you're only thinking maybe
it's getting better. You know, you're looking at steel show still steal photos,
you're not looking at video, soyou're thinking, the deer's getting better.
The deer's getting better, and heis putting on weight. So we

(09:00):
had all made kind of a decisionthat we were gonna hold Gimpy. Had
he had gotten a name, Gimpy, we had we were cheering Gimpy on
and that included my family, mykids, like every morning wanted to know
was Gimpy out, and we wouldlook and find Gimpy if Gimpy came out,
and so we it got personal. And so last night at five fifteen,

(09:24):
Gimpy Gimpy, it got personal.Gimpy decided to gimp out. And
it was kind of weird at firstbecause to watch how a three legged deer
walked. Oh yeah, and itcould move, but it I mean that
left leg was just dangling. Didn'tsee any motion out of it at all.

(09:46):
And then as he was eating,I watched and the text started.
So I started with lucas. Isaid, what do you think. I'm
like, he actually came out,and I'm like, because I had said
I wasn't gonna shoot, And thenI watched and he's like, it's your
to see. I got the wholetime. He's like, it's yon on
you man. And I was like, dude, don't do this to me.
As your property is your deer isyour deer. It's like the family

(10:07):
pet too. Yeah, it's likea family pet. Now I'm like,
so who do I text next?My wife? I'm like, Gimpi's out,
What do I do? She's like, is he struggling? I'm like,
yes, is he suffering. I'mlike, I don't know if he
suffered or not. I mean,I don't know. And I was watching
him eat and I started, youknow, watching, he was close,
he was eighty five yards. I'mwatching through the binoculars. I'm watching through

(10:28):
the scope and he's as he's leaningover, you know, I don't want
to get into it. He's swayingand stuff. And listen, we're not
into the head at heart and winteryet. And the coyotes are are,
you know, ferocious? And Ijust couldn't. I literally put the cross
chairs on him like three times, took them off, three put it off,

(10:48):
and then I quit text him withany of him, and I said,
I got to make this decision.I got to make this decision.
And as the sun started going downand it got man, I'm gonna say
one thing about tragic con and Igot it. This is going to be
an Irby Street. They taught meinto a tragacon. I wanted to do
Leopold again. I did. Iwent with a tragacon. Holy mickerel,
Like I was starting to worry aboutgoing past sunset. It was so clear,

(11:09):
and so I made the decision. And I'm just gonna tell you the
truth with tears of my eyes.I pulled the trigger and literally with tears
of my eyes and uh he heuh, I don't he did not,
he did not suffer. You know, they they are, I mean,
mister dionnar over here, by theway, did we even mention that Tommy

(11:31):
from everybody knows you. That's allright, everybody knows your voice. But
I'm just gonna say this much thatI don't. I don't think he suffered.
He I don't think he suffered long. And you know what I'm I'm
excited, and I'm also gonna getthat skull mounted. And I am.
I had talked to Cassie, whois the young lady who she had started

(11:54):
following him. I was sending picturesto Ken and they with updates. So
so I told her that we're gonnaput on there, Cassie and English,
We're gonna put We're gonna put bothour names on the on the uh skull
amount. But it's it's a toughdecision. It is. It's a tough
decision. And you know, Imean, ethics come into play. They

(12:18):
do, and and you know,I told Lucas this goes back five weeks.
I said, dude, is thisnot stupid? I'm sitting here worried
about a deer that I want tosurvive so that I can kill it's genetics
down the road so I can shootanother you know, because the genetics of
this deer are pretty much that anythingit produces is not gonna have a brown

(12:39):
time. So there there are thatwe know of one dismounted that's from that
genetics line. So I'm like,is this is? Is? Is it
weird that I'm But in the sametime, I don't want the deer suffering,
and uh, so I decided topull the trigger and we're gonna have
some venicons, gonna have some gimpysausage and gimpy hamburger. First, they

(13:03):
don't name it. How big isa spread? I didn't measure it,
but to me, I'll put itthis, I put I put it up
against uh the eight and the ninethat I have in my garage that are
my biggest and it's taller, taller. It's real tall, yeah, I
mean real tall. And definitely ifI was Cassie, I would have pulled

(13:24):
the trigger back in October on it. I would I would have if it
came out. I mean it's notgonna have brown time. They I mean,
I guess you know through through geneticsand other things. It's not gonna
have a brown time. I uhuh. Oh, by the way,
yes, uh, you're getting atext from the one and only Ronald Tallby

(13:46):
Ronald is the only one in theinlet right now with lib shrimp. Really
yep. If you're looking for liveshrimp, yes, that man went crazy
last night and uh went make surehe had lab shrimp. Yes, sir,
yea. So he went and gothe went and loaded up. I
think he's gonna be open tomorrow toofor a little bit. Yeah, on
Christmas. Ep. Yeah, hedid say that he would be open at

(14:07):
least until noon. Right. Well, him and I have have coordinated some
stuff. But yeah, we're gonnabe there. Oh you're gonna be there
too. Yeah, all right,is the party in the making there is
Listen, it is a party upover there. When he shows up.
It's fun, I guarantee. Wellhe had them lined up over there getting
srimp this morning when we were there. Wow, and they look good.

(14:28):
They're good. They're good merles inthe shrimp. They're about that big.
I may not what are they eatingin merles gelet right now, Chris,
are they eating shrimp from Georgia orare they eating merles In srimp. I
think they're gonna eat anything that merlesIn. The shrimp will do just fine.
Man. You know, we gota lot to talk about too.
We go back to the trout tournament. We got to talk about the trout
tournament. And congratulations Captain Jimmy andCrewe. Unbelievable too. Fish. And

(14:54):
I mean I never would have guessedthat so the store, I wouldn't have
either. The story. So thestory is that those were called pretty much
back to back. Yes, andthey were caught really early, Yeah,
yeah, super early early, reallyearly. And no, if you don't
know Captain Jimmy, if he catchestoo big fish early, it's gonna be
a long day for somebody. That'sall they caught. That's all they fished

(15:16):
for. Wow, there's two bites. You know what they did the rest
of the tournament? What drove aroundthe inlet? Yep? Well, I'm
gonna tell you I would have donethe same things. Yeah, well how
would you not? I would havebeen a dead dog getting breakfast. This
was a big fish eight eight seveneight eight seven or eight nine trout.
That is a lifetime fish. Yeah, all right, and I'm going to
tell you the six and a halfthat went with it is no slout.

(15:39):
Now, most people will never catcha six pound trout. No, they
will not little on that almost anine pound trout in four foot of water.
Yep, yeah, yep. Wow. Well there's no chance of getting
in that spot to fish anymore,by the way, because somebody is playing
lock it up everybody. Everybody.I watch all I watch all social media,

(16:00):
and he can tell wow. Youknow. I had this conversation yesterday
with a good friend of Merle's limitfishing charters, and he said, I
don't think that Jason's guys would gosit there and catch multiple, multiple fish
sitting there. I think they wouldcatch some and leave. And I know
we've had this discussion. I thinkI would. I think I think I

(16:22):
think the person that realizes what they'recatching there are a school of breeder fish.
Yeah, at that school is breederfish. They are. I mean,
look at the size of them.Look at the weight. That fish
was almost nine pounds and fishes headmine inches. That fish should have been
over thirty. Yep. Well therecomes up here we are with ethics again,

(16:45):
there comes a time David David plaidand release over twenty A great philosophy,
great great group. You know thosefish are the spawners, they are.
And how about his day? Yeah, look at his un artificial.
On artificial he won flounder and secondin the overall and that was on one

(17:10):
fish, right, yeah, fivesix or five something? Yeah, yep.
And then trust me, I spokewith him that evening. He was
super happy. Oh he should betoo. I mean, what on just
on artificial? Uh huh, allof us, everybody else was fishing live
eight Now we all love his jigs. I strike jigs a lot of us
fisher I've been using them. Andhe still can't believe it. But those
our biggest fish that we caught inboth our two biggest King Michael this year

(17:36):
came on an ice strike. Thesecrets he sent me the fixture right now,
came out on it and he justcan't believe it. And he said,
I told you early on not totry it. He said, I
worried that it'll be it held up. It was the only hook and I
wish Tony was here. It wasthe only hook left. And the forty
pounder that we got it was theonly hook left in that fish and it

(17:57):
had no bend to it. Okay, we'll go to break. All right,
let's do it. We'll go tobreak. Hey, listen, y'all
walk them all outfitters. Come onright down here, Matt tell him how
to get here. Four Elm Street, Downtown Conway, out of Conway Marina.
It's easy to get to. Ineed to turn my lights on to
let him know. Yeah, we'llturn your lights on it. No,

(18:17):
you already, You've already given mea heart attack this morning. All right,
well listen, we'll be right backon the other side of the break.
Y'all come to walk them all outfitters. We're getting ready to start giving
away some stuff here. Hey,don't go Anywhere's the Southern Angles Radio show
here on Gator one O seven pointnine and the Freedom Book Club where your
boat is waiting and by Monarch Groupand where Bert is not here and we
wish he was cause hey Bert,if you're listening, I still want my

(18:40):
golf balls. Oh you know, have you all seen the stories about those
golf balls so all over? Haveyou seen it? Now? You know
the deal? So his phone numberson there, So if you find the
golf ball and you call Bert, you get a sleeve of golf balls no
way, which is with his faceon it. So he has had this
week was like somewhere in Georgia maybeyep, somewhere in Savyana, I think.

(19:03):
And then Charleston golf balls turned down. Yeah, so you know,
I would be scared. Like backin the day, I wouldn't worried about
it, but I would be scaredto have that on my ball, on
my balls, on my golf balls. Fred or you golfer, No,
you don't play golden to get outthere. Because it came a day where
it was either golf or fish.If you could be any good at either

(19:26):
one, then you're gonna commit one. And I stole the club. You
know what I was. I wasthere. I was there with you once
I was on the golf side, and then decided I was tired of chasing
my golf ball in the water.I felt like there was something that would
be more lucrative in that water thatyou already in the water anyway, in
the golf ball. Yeah, Isee a bunch of people over here.
We got people in now, yeah, we do. We got people in

(19:48):
there over there doing some shopping. And that's right, Hey, knock out
that Christmas list. I mean, who wants to go shopping on Christmas Eve?
I'm going through, So this ishappening. This may be the first
year. This may be the firstyear that I do not have to shop
on Christmas Eve. And thanks tomy wife for being so prepared. But

(20:11):
yes, no shopping on Christmas Evefor this guy. But you can come
down here and knock out some list. Knock out your list, find something
for that loved one of yours. They got Listen, they got these I
was walking around looking. They gotthese, these knives, these great knives
right here. See that less thanten bucks? Parent? Yeah that thing.
I like the T shirts they gotthe black Water therapy yep, yes,

(20:34):
yeah, that that's kind of cool. I mean, if you ever,
if you live on Aaron Conway oryou guys are you know big time
in the red water stuff? Icall it red water all right. See
that's they're cool looking stuff. Begrateful him. And I've been telling look,
I'm gonna tell you what. I'mgonna put stars on the spot if
he doesn't show up, and he'she's right now, he's texting me with

(20:56):
excuses he's working. Uh huh, yeah, right, I got him this
this cool thing. Tell me whatthis is because this is the kind of
stuff that people like that. Allright, So I have one of those.
It is called chilling Real. Thatis a koozy that you can also
fish with. It is rigged upwith a fishing line leader for a hand

(21:18):
line. It's got to wait onit. It comes with hooks and you
can stand in the water and fish. You imagine Sandy Island or Redneck Beach
in the Black River, you know, anywhere. Why not that's the old
school yoyo. Yeah, why notthrow out a rig I saw Matt has
toadfish. Not Matt, that isCaptain river Rat. Captain river Oh,

(21:41):
I'm sorry. I am sorry,by the way, I screwed that up
earlier too. Captain river Rat isin the house, Captain river At all
right, Well, Captain river Athe's got a bunch of toadfish stuff.
He's got these these what are theythole coolers, the dry bags. I
mean, that is all some stuff. And that stuff you're probably not going

(22:02):
to go find at a lot ofthese places. You're going you go to
tanker. I doubt you're gonna findthis stuff. I'm glad. I'm glad.
My wife's not listening. I knowshe's not because you may have just
nailed one of my last minute gifts. I get in so much trouble because
she gets mad because I put fishin her cooler accidentally, like having sorry,
but like you know, most ofthe time when I'm gifting fish to

(22:22):
people, like if I clean them, then I need a small cooler to
transport them in, and I don'twant to use one of my big nice
K two's or big frigs, soI'll normally grab whatever her little picnic ull
cooler. We all do it,and then all of a sudden it goes
up missing and I can't remember whereI put it. So did I clean

(22:44):
it? Did I not clean it? You know something that those cases and
I was on in here, andyou wouldn't never think of this as a
Christmas present. You see those boatbrushes right there? Oh yeah, now
you know I could wear out aboat brush pretty quick. Wull. That'd
be a real nice gift for somebodyto had a boat. You know he
needs to wash your I mean, that's a nice piece of gear right there,

(23:04):
you know. Luke, Luke that'sa great idea for Luke. Barnador's
here in the house and for allyou ladies out there you may you may
remember him from the football field, but Lucas here and Lucas gonna be meeting
at Merle's in the fishing charters nextyear. Luke, a brush is a
great idea for you for Christmas.Yeah, he'll be very familiar with that.

(23:25):
We've been doing the Uh. We'llthrow in the cleaner too. You
can start practicing, you can startpracticing. But yeah, I mean,
if you if you have a manthat does a lot of boating and a
lot of boat washing, his brushis probably worn out. That's a good
idea right there. You know what. My brush is worn out. I'm
so is mine. That's why Ilove my About the now, I think
something else is really cool that thatI like personally. These signs right here,

(23:48):
yes, and then I agree thewelcome all river sign here on paneling.
Uh, these things are beautiful. You know we we we do the
three D. You know we've donethe three D signs with our buddy Chuck
and very similar. But a greatpiece of art, great centerpiece to put
in a man cave. Great Imean even in your house. The other

(24:11):
thing behind it is something that's great. Battery boy, boy, I know
you get tired. Bye it isyeah, Captain Captain Chris of Carolina hook
imply and uh Daniel the last weekfor a battery for his book for Christmas?
Did he really? Yeah? That'sa smart kid. Yeah, he's

(24:33):
not getting one. That's thinking that. That is good thinking. What's a
good sayings? Uth? Too heavyfor the sack, I'm not about it.
That is good thinking. Yeah. But walking around here and seeing did
you notice the artwork over here?Did anybody see the artwork that's over here?
Yes, those are the pictures you'retalking about. Yeah, oh yeah,
there's awesome. I mean there isso many different things you can find

(24:56):
in here, and and again alot of people may have not been here.
We're walking all out. What's thatfor Elm Street? Is that right?
Or yeah? Yeah? Just cometo a Conway Marina. Come to
Conway Marina. You can't miss it. You look for the two story building,
look for the two story building, the trilogy truck and the dn R
car which the dn R car youcan't really tell the DNR. Yeah,
sneaky with that one. Oh yeah, black one but his lights work really

(25:19):
good. And so does the sirenin your mirror. Yep, and so
does the siren. Well, i'lltell you what, Fred, what's happening
down south? It was a fishingreport from down south. I haven't really
been and I hadn't been really excitedto go either, because of all the
rain we got and the rivers arestill up, and be honest with you,

(25:42):
I haven't been out to go lookand see what the order conditions are
either. I've talked to some guysfrom w and they were asking me about
going to harvest orcers. I'm like, if it adn't clean and grain,
I wouldn't be picking anything up rightnow. So even the guys that traditionally
this time of year be out tryingto get orchards for Christmas and new might
better be careful doing that. SoI haven't been looking, and I hadn't

(26:03):
had a drone opportunity to go huntingthese fish down either of it. If
this water's off, I don't know. I was thinking about that this week.
You know, we talked a lotabout the drums. I'm not sure
that would be that would help you. If this water's all tanned off and
you can't really see it. See, you're back to the old school man.
You back to every creek looking forhim instead of flying them as you're

(26:26):
gonna have to go in there andlook for him. Well, I'm gonna
tell you I took the drone withme duck hunting this week. I got
suckered into a duck hunt. Now, I'm just kidding. I didn't get
suckered. It's always a pleasure totake McClure Hopkins to do anything. My
patient partner and soon to be formeryouth angler not he's got three months left,
but he wanted to go duck hunting. He's never been down south,

(26:49):
and so Jonathan Stevens from live Wireinvited us to join him, and we
left at the I don't know ifyou call it the I don't know if
we left late Tuesday or early Wednesday, But anyway, we left at two
in the morning, right, andyou're over thirty. Guess what that don't

(27:10):
compute anymore, Bud. My boysmet up at two thirty this morning to
go do game management property for ducksthis morning. Oh oh well, good,
two hours away from the house.Meeting at two thirty to walk in.
Oh wow, it's to walk in, well, walk in with waiters.
Oh yeah, I'm going to saythis much the best part of the

(27:33):
whole day. Well, we hada fire for three and a half hours.
You go to big fire and westayed warm. You gotta be really
mad at it, Yes, andI'm not that mad at it. But
I kept saying, all right,McClure's having fun. McClure's having fun.
But I did fly the drone afterabout two and a half hours of not
seeing a duck. I did flythe drone up and not to go scare

(27:55):
up game or harass the animals, which is illegal, by the way,
for any drone owners out there. They're thinking, Oh, I'm gonna fly
it into Annandale or kin Low andI'm gonna scare the birds up and get
them flying. That's not what thedrones for anyway. I was not near
any of those impowerments, but Idid want to see where we were.

(28:17):
Where we were is an area thatnow has been noted as an Indian burial
ground. Is this down santee?Uh huh? So we are what I
thought was amongst smitten middens. Letme say that, correct middens. And
so I wanted to see it fromthe air, so I flew it up
and the footage is absolutely incredible. And you and I have experienced middens together.

(28:41):
You showed one in in Northoundland tome, and these middens that uh,
we were around Stephen who Goldvinch CenterGoldvinch is an expert at this stuff,
and he is he loves all thathistory and everything. He is not
positive that they were mittens, butthey could have been something else. But

(29:02):
when you're talking about in the middleof this rice field area, in the
middle of nothing, and then you'vegot these clumps of green grass that are
all perfect in a I call ita comma. They look like a comma
perfect and they're all evenly spaced outand it's crazy. Not by accident,
not by accident. Yeah, andit's they're kind of that way in North

(29:23):
fel It too, the way they'respaced out. For folks, you don't
know what a midden is, sowhat is it? It was designed the
Indians came up with it and itwas a tidal fish trap. Correct,
Well, it's the theories are thatthe least translation for midden is the dump.
Okay, so it for whatever reasonthat I maybe Steven's better and knows

(29:48):
more about me. But they woulddump the oyster shells in the same spot
repeatedly over years. And as theyas the guys have gone through and studied
the different layers and stuff, theycan ate it by the pottery they find
mixed in with the shells, andit goes back thousands of years that they
were putting oyster shells on the exactsame spot for centuries, yep. Why

(30:10):
they were doing that, I don'tknow. I don't know if it was
to give them a higher advantage tosee, or they just it was an
easy place to dump the oyster shellsafter they had done or I don't know.
But there's places all up and downSouth Carolina coast where you'll see the
middens. So if you see apile of white orsters out in the middle
of nowhere, you gotta wonder howthat got there, that's probably the Indians,

(30:30):
yep. And where we were,we were within a quarter mile of
where Jay and Kelly found the Indianbody. The bones which now have been
I mean it's been not I don'tyou call it certified, verified or whatever,
But yes, that they were Indianbones hundreds of years old and that

(30:53):
there are others in that same areaand they were collecting pottery and she reached
down to grab a piece of potteryand there was an arm. There was
an arm there. So yeah,so it's crazy. But I mean,
you think about the rice fields downthere, and anybody that has read about

(31:15):
the history of the Cte Delta, the rice fields and the rice plantations and
everything else in duck hunting. Imean, it was at one point in
time the mecca for duck hunting inthe southeast, and Brooke was you know,
up his Ears and that too.I've seen the if you ever been

(31:36):
to the up in Cherokee where theyhad the village the Ladies there. I
saw a lady one day I wasup there. She was stringing perry winkle
shells into a necklace and they wereall bleached out and they were white.
And I asked her, I said, do you know what those are?
And she said no, And Iyou know, got into talking about berry
winkles and she said, yeah. She said, back in time that the

(32:01):
coastal tribes were trade with the mountaintribes and one of the things they used
was those shells. I said, you have no idea how many periwinkles.
They are, but it was prettyinteresting to see her stringing them up in
the mountains of North Carolina. Yeah, having periwinkles, which you know,
we know where they come from andwant to see in the grass. So

(32:22):
yeah, there's a lot of historywith the with been here a long time.
Have you ever got out the boatCaptain Chris and waited for rids?
Yeah? Have you ever got aperiwinkle in your shoe? Oh? Yeah,
it'll cut you. They are apain in the butt. You will
stop walking. You will stop walking, you will you will stop walking.
They make it miserable. Yeah, they really can't get it. They can't.

(32:43):
You're going, yeah, you're gonnahave you gonna something's gonna change,
get them all over your trim tabseverything. Well, i'll tell you what.
The crowd is growing. And Isee Cody Wilder's dad, David is
here now, isn't that? Isn'tthat nice to be known as Cody's dad
David? I see David is inthe house. Cody, unfortunate is not
in town. He's out of town. But that is one of our uh,
I mean, I just want towe we love Cody, obviously,

(33:06):
he's one of our favorite bass fishermenand a Calmway tiger angler out here.
And uh so we're gonna we're gonnatake a break. Jenny, you're ready,
let's take another break here? Yeah? Well, no, give me
like, gim me give me tenseconds, all right, I'll give you
ten seconds. One, two, three, four five. Anyway, y'all
come out. Listen. We gotgreat gifts, great giveaways. Come down,

(33:27):
pick up that last minute gift andget registered to win up to a
turtle box. I mean, we'vegot fifty dollars gift cards. How are
we gonna we got We gotta figureout the gift card thing? We got
what we're gonna figure out the fiftydollars gift card the year. Oh yeah,
we gotta figure that out, likeright right now, in ten seconds.
When we get offer the first thingthat shows up and asks for a
fifty dollars gift card to walk home, my outfitters, they come find me

(33:47):
or you, they're gonna get it. Wow, did anybody hear that?
All right? Listen, if you'redriving around, if you're driving around,
come to walk, Come on outfittersright now, come find me or Tommy
and ask. There you go.We got two, So the next two
people, the next week's fine, next four people, the first two people
to show up that aren't here now, that aren't here now, that are

(34:09):
here. Now we'll walk aroud andask us, uh, let's let's do
it. I love it all right, y'all, don't go anywhere. We'll
be right back on the other sideof the break. This is a Southern
English radio show on the Gator oneoh seven point nine. All right,
fish heads, we're back here onthe Southern English Radio show coming to you
live via the Toyota Tundra Studio presentedby Sparks Toyota where the dealers always in

(34:32):
Oh it up, hang On,we were missing Chris hang On and by
Key Westwowboats and Marshall's Marine where everyday's a boat show every day and Freedom
Boat Club where your boat is waiting, hey, and Monarch Rufe and look
at that space. See that bigblank space in there. Okay, in
the world of radio, you don'twant that mat the river at was not

(34:58):
prepared. We did not give himfair warning. So watching he's busy,
and he's and he's watching Russ Rush. And by the way, uh,
mister Luke is a ladies out there. So just so you know, Luke
is a already training for being agreat daddy and babysitter. He's doing great
over there. Look at look atmom? Gone, mom saying no,

(35:19):
all right, listen real quick.Blossman Gas, our good partner's up there
on the north end. Want tomake sure that you have a great time
in your backyard this spring and summer. And we do have a very busy
man on the phone. That's JesseLong with Blossman. Jesse, thank you
for joining us this morning. Iknow you're really busy watching that hog cook,
aren't you. Yeah, good morningguys. Yeah, then it is

(35:40):
five thirty daddy. Well uh,let's now how many people you got to
feed? And are you cooking oneor two? Multiple? I'm just spiking
one. We got about twenty peoplecoming over, I think. And how
big? How big would said saidhog be? Eighty five pounds? Read
that's a pretty good size. That'sa pretty good size. And when supper

(36:05):
ready? Yeah? When read?Four? Four? Okay? All right,
So are you cooking that thing onone of your brand of smokers or
do you all have something? Didyou have to get something a little bit
bigger for that? I'm I knowI'm setting myself up here, but got
a pea cooker that Blossman Holmes thatwe actually lease out, so I've got
it here at home this weekend. He'sn't it. Oh that's a great that's

(36:29):
a great idea. That is agreat idea. But we've got the shep
we got ship with us. Nowyou remember Sheep Richard from the big cookout
that we had. Oh excuse me, it was the grand reopening of Blossman
and Chef's here in the studio.Let's talk about some of the great grills
that has Christmas obviously, that isgrill. Are grills like a popular Christmas

(36:52):
item? I'm I'm asking I wouldlove one, it is. I mean,
we kind of mark some things downon a few sales, and definitely
the Wilmington Green was a good sailorForce and Coyotes blaze all the above.
Napoleon sold several of the number ofyears says, and the grill accessories is
a big hit with the Big GreenEgg as well. Well. I do

(37:13):
have plans over the next two weeksto experiment with a couple of new things
on my Wilmington grill. And thanksto you and Wilmington grill in Blossman,
I have a wonderful new Griddell top, but it took me eleven years to
learn that I can actually steam orsmoke in my in my Wilmington grill.

(37:36):
I'm embarrassed now. Prior to yougetting me the accessories that I needed.
Again, the only thing that Ihave had in twelve years go out is
that the what was it the teethon the connector for my fosset or my
my my on my little whatever youcall it down there to I can now

(37:58):
lock fluid in so I can fillit with water and ship I want you
to, so I could fill itwith something to add flavoring into a smoke
into a steam, yeah, exactly, cooking in yeah yeah, because it's
actually the same thing when you thinkabout it, right, a smoker from
from a grill. It's still you'restill using heat right to heat the unit.

(38:20):
Right. There's water in a smoker, right, and you're throwing the
chips in however way that particular modelis, right, you know, whether
it's a palette or whatever, you'redoing the same thing. So all you're
doing is is sort of manipulating thatthe kind of unit that you have.
So what about a roast from avenison? Wouldn't that be something that would

(38:44):
a deer a deer roast? Wouldthat be something that you would smoke?
You ever done that? Jesse's adeer hunter too, Have you ever done
that? Oh? Yeah, Ihave have take hom and of course wrapping
bacon, peppers, onions and letit smoke you to go wrong there?
What is a good? What? What's something good? Now? I've read
on Wilmington Grill's website different things.Apple juice is something that's really big.

(39:07):
Apple cider, I think, andsome other things. Wine, I guess
there's something that's good. What's anothergood seasoning to add to the water to
add flavor in your cook? Well, like you said, wine, yeah,
and or or or a real heavyred wine. You want you want
the most flavor in something like thatbecause it's not going to be a direct

(39:30):
you know, you know, you'renot flavoring that, You're not flavoring to
meat. You're flavoring smoke. Smoke. Yeah, that that that sounds perfect.
Now. Another popular popular grill outthere in this world is green Eggs.
And the key to a green eggI think a lot of times is
the accessories that you have to gowith it because they can do so many

(39:51):
things. You've got last time Isaw you have a ton of accessories up
there of almost every option you need. Yeah, from the pizza wedge.
I mean that's a big hit thistime to year when the egg come out
with so the pizza wedge, it'spretty cool all these hot dollar pizza ovens
you have. And if you gotan egg right now, you can definitely
can work into a pizza oven forsure. And who would want a nice

(40:15):
homemade I basically brick oven, That'swhat it is. I mean it performs
as a brick oven. Pizza shifsover here smiling. And by the way,
Jesse I got to eat the Shif'scooking last week for the first time
ever. And there is a reasonthat he cooked for so many stars and

(40:35):
that they a couple of them kepthim around for so long. It's unbelievable
to figure something out about that toget him back, and let's do something
at Boston. I agree. Ithink it's a great I think that's a
great idea. Yeah, I wouldlove it, and we will, and
definitely he is open to that. We've already actually had some discussion on some
other things and and doing that aswell. And you know, we that

(40:55):
might be a great place to doit. But we've talked about having kind
of like a lady's I don't wantto call it a ladies thing because we
the men probably need to learn asmuch. But we were talking about having
a cooking seminar, right, likewe do fission seminars all the time,
but having a cooking seminar with withwild game and fish. Yeah. I

(41:15):
do private cooking demos all the time. People hire me to come in maximum
of eight people, so it youknow, it stays real. You know,
it's it's small, right, right, And it's great because I can
I can uh you know, talkwith with you know, the each individual
and and and it's more. Uh, I'm having the same trouble you are

(41:37):
with getting that word. I know, I know there's a word intimate,
intimate's intimate, And I love thatbecause I'll do four or five dishes right
in front of them, yep,you know, to two and a half
hours, and I talk all about, uh, you know, what it
was like to work up close andpersonal in the kitchens of Hollywood's a list,
right, you know, And andit's it's very interesting because it trends

(42:00):
lates to the guests a lot easierthan it would if it's, uh,
you know, if it's a say, a restaurant. I think he brought
enough. Yeah, I think hebrought enough. I'd like to well,
I'll tell you what I'm I'm superexcited to try. I think that once
we do one, I think wedo one. I do think that you're

(42:22):
gonna get a big demand for Yeah. And I love doing it. I
love doing I do. And Ithink, man Jesse, we might have
come home with something that might bea good idea for you know and eating.
Yeah, exactly. And people peoplethat I do this for, they
relate to me more than say,if it was a restaurant chef, because
what they realized in a very shortperiod of time is even though I work

(42:45):
for who I did, I stilldo the same thing that everybody else does.
I wake up in the morning andI say, okay, what what
am I? What am I cookingtoday? Where am I going to shop?
Who doesn't eat this? Who eatsthat? You know? And then
I cook, I serve, Iclean up, right. I do the
same thing that everybody at home does. So I've got all kinds of techniques

(43:05):
to pass on to all the hooksthat I've been told a gazillion times that,
wow, we you know, welearned so much from this how to
shop for I could do a wholeseminar on shopping, getting in and out
of grocery stores, getting the bestquality of stuff with the least amount of
stress, and you're on your way. I'd love that because you know,

(43:27):
at my house, my youngest sonLane, when he wakes up, the
first thing he says was for supper. You know, so my wife has
a menu on the wall so hedon't have to ask anymore. You and
I don't have the luxury of cookingoff the same menu every night. I
opened an upscale, wood fired pizzeriand Los Angeles after I stopped being a

(43:47):
private chef, and people are comingto me saying, boy, this must
be killing you compared to work infront. I said, I cook off
the same menu every night. Itis so freaking easy. Yep, you
know, but but you and I, we don't have that luxury. Got
to come up with stuff all allthe time, all the time. And
that's my problem, coming up withsomething new. You know, we're tired
of chicking we're tired, you know, we want something different. You know

(44:09):
my boys, you know, they'rethey're avid hunters and and they're killing deer.
And I've got freezer full of venisonand I'd love to have new recipes
for that. Yeah, you know, because when I cook it in the
over and it drives out so bad, it's like jerky. Yeah, you
know, so I'd like to learnhow to cook. You need to make
sure you pick up the trilogy outdor the magazine every month and everybody doesn't.
And and check out that recipe thatthe ship is sharing with us each

(44:31):
month. He put a really goodvenison uh menu recipe in there. Yeah.
A couple of months ago, whenI was working from Mel Gibson,
I was very lucky. They hadseven kids. Right. Kids are always
the toughest please, right, Butthey were the most open minded about anything
I wanted to do. And I'lljust give you a quick story. Prior

(44:54):
to that, every celebrity that Iinterviewed with they all said the same thing,
every single one of them. Welike everything until the first day that
you start, and then you getthis dossier of well, this one's vegan,
this one's vegetarian, this one willonly eat fish on Thursdays, you

(45:15):
know, and it becomes comes inreal house. But with with Mel Gibson,
it was whatever you want to do. His wife said to me in
the beginning that that I was heronly luxury, that she didn't have to
think about what she was gonna cookthis day. That's nice, yeah,

(45:35):
and that's a compliment. Yeah,yeah, And that's that's often why why
you're hired as as a private chow. Well, we're gonna help you cooking,
and we're gonna help you out byputting you right on a grill.
And that's going to be going upand visiting Jesse at any of the Blossman
location. Jesse, you guys arelet's see, you're gonna be probably closed

(45:57):
Christmas obviously, what what what's yourschedule for the rest of the year after
that normal schedule just close Christmas Dayin New Year's Day? Wonder rest wonder
Well y'all y'all deserve it, buddy, y'all deserve it. And uh it's
been we've had some actually cool weatherthis uh winter and fall, so it's
been good for us for business andwell hopefully it continues. Well, that's

(46:19):
great, And how about the bassfishing for Jesse Long you're going to be
doing some bass fishing. Oh yeah, looking forward to It's my favorite time
of the year to go fishing.Of course, when the cold weather's out,
no jet skis and all that goodstuff, and how much they'll be
wearing a cold suit fishing any day. In short, well, are you
signed up for the six man tournamentsfor the year? Do you are you
going to do that again? Theteam teams Swamp Fox of course, and

(46:39):
then uh me and my partner's fishin the South Carolina Bass Team Trail that
right here, Team Trail. That'sit. Ye. Well, I got
a man sitting beside me here that'sgot a little bit of a pretty cool
schedule coming up this year, andthat would be j T. Tompkins has
finally come into the building here andwe're going to have him on in the

(47:00):
next segment. But I know youprobably like to wish him well with him
being a local boy every weekend anglerdreams of I know, I'll probably still
propane the rest of my life andjust for fun. But congratulations to JT.
That's super. He's you just cantell he's dedicated and puts his time
in and then he has definitely rewardedhim exactly. I think without a doubt

(47:22):
we all agree. Anybody that knowsJT in the least bit knows that he
is dedicated to his job. Andwhen you're going to be a professional at
anything, I mean, I'm goingback to golf myself. I didn't have
the dedication that I needed back then. I may have had the talent,
but not the dedication. And JT'sgot the dedication. And we're looking forward

(47:44):
to a great year out of himcoming up and following him on the Elite
series, and Jesse, I lookforward to watching you fish this year.
You you actually do. You know, at the end of the day,
you really do pretty dang good yourselfin fast fishing for a part for a
hard time guy, Well you gotto enjoy it. I mean, who
else wants to go out there andrun around in a seventy miles an hour

(48:08):
and so I'm sure Jat canbouch forthat, and you as willing. But
everybody's got to have something to do, and it's it's that thing you look
forward to do it every weekend. That's it, all right, folks.
Well listen, y'all, go upand see Jesse at Blossman Gas and don't
forget hey, all those generators youneed. And we got lucky this year
once again through hurricane season, notto not to lose power for any significant

(48:32):
amount of time. But there werea lot of people that were safe and
comfortable knowing that they had back up. And that is all thanks to Blossman
Gas. And y'all can call them, have them come out. They'll give
you a free estimate and set youup with the peace of mind to know
that you're not gonna lose all thatbenison and everything else in your freezer when

(48:52):
the power goes out. Yes,Kevin, stop, all right, we
got a one one more question outof the chef here. No, I
just want to to say, youknow, I I don't endorse just you
know, just because and I wasblown away by Blossoman's. Yeah, I
mean they have even you know, they got entry level all the way up
to to to high end equipment. But even the entry level stuff was was

(49:15):
excellent quality. That's I was veryvery impressed with. But that is the
truth and and the big box.So it's kind of your favor and right
and the products of the products willsell as well. And the staff was
just so friendly, just blew meaway. Yeah, they are Jesse's okay,
But miss Trudy she is the bomb. I'm just kidding, Jesse.

(49:37):
She is your backbone. Well listen, man, I hope wishing you and
and the Long family and all theBlossoman family of merry Christmas. And thank
you so much for taking the timeout from watching that hog cook to join
us. There you go, youguys, I hope you have a merry
Christmas. All right, buddy, you too, see you at four o'clock.
All right, we're gonna see howthis works. We're gonna see when
Jesse hangs up, if we loseJenna. Let's see how that works.

(49:57):
All right, all right, buddy, all right, Jesse's gone and Jenna's
still there. I think. Allright, perfect, all right, wonderful.
Well JT. Tompkins has made itinto the building. And uh,
let's see. We are at aquarter after and Sergeant Pardue it's here.
I believe he was shamed into coming, is yeah a sarg Some of us

(50:25):
have to work this morning. Sounderrated it is. It is overrated,
overrated, underrated. You know what? I think he's here for? Though?
What's that he knew? We gotbiscuits, by the way, and
the biscuit and a biscuit. Hey, Jordan, you hungry, JT?
Are you hungry? All right? If you if you're hungry, grab a

(50:46):
grab a biscuit. Listen. Sohere's the deal. JT's got THOSEPX custom
rods here. You got to comecheck him out. We're gonna get him
on the in the next segment andlet him sit in and do a whole
segment with him. Will talk abouthow his life has changed. Now.
Those are sweet and and it's changedin a significant way. I know you

(51:08):
can go ahead and put the headphoneon. Now. Let's well, we'll
talk a little bit right now.We got some time. But I know
life has changed a little bit.You typically right now, would you not
be traveling and fishing? Well thelast few years, you know, a
lot of stuff's been changing with everythingwith sponsors and everything. So it takes
a long time to get a boat. You're trying to work out deals and
it takes a lot of companies. You know, they don't get their budgets

(51:30):
till run around October, and thenyou still got to work them out.
So it takes about a month. And then you once you order the boat.
It takes some time. So thelast two years, you know,
I've been trying to find where myhome's at. And you know, this
year, I finally fell in onyou know, Yamaha Skeeter Combo from Marshall's
Marine. So now that I'm withthose guys, it's gonna be a lot
long term relationship with those So nowI this is my first year, you

(51:51):
know, with them, So ittook some time to get everything in order.
But after that next year, youknow, BE ordered my boats a
lot sooner, you know, gettingon the water a lot earlier, and
you know, back in my normalrhythm. Once I get used to everything
and you go ahead. This isa weird question, I know, but
do you guys have agents? Imean, how do you find those sponsors
and things like that. So alot of people do have agents, like

(52:12):
a lot of people that I listento, you know, on the pro
series. But I don't have anagent. You know, I'm very new
to the sport and I'm just tryingto learn how to navigate myself a little
bit. So that way, youknow, maybe in the future that I
do get an agent, I stillunderstand how to do it on my own.
Or how to like handle a lotof the conversations that I have.
But like, this year's definitely beena learning curve. It's probably been the
most difficult part of the job thatI've ever had was this year learning how

(52:35):
to talk to sponsors, learning howto present yourself, learning how to present
them, and learning how to educateyourself on everything, because not only do
you have your job of bass fishing, you also have to have the job
of understanding everything about your sponsors thatyou represent so you can represent to the
best of your abilities. So andthen you have to learn all that about
every company you're going after and alsoall the companies that you have. So

(52:58):
it's been a large and flux ofinformation for me like to process over the
last little while, because you gotto do research on them. But what
I think, what you're talking about, you got to do research before you
even go to them. You reallyhonestly need to already act like I mean,
you already need to be educated onall of their products, on their
service whatever before you go to them. And then obviously if you pick them
up and and and you start representingthem, you almost because you are an

(53:22):
employee exactly, You're you're a fulltime employee to these guys. You got
to represent to the best of yourabilities. But like this year, I've
been super lucky that a lot ofthe companies that I have are companies that
I've already worked with for years,So I really had to do much a
lot of research. But you know, you still got to branch out,
look for you know, a lotof other things, because this is a
sport that costs a lot of moneyand it's hard to do this sport without

(53:44):
it. And so I got togo out there and I got to make
a living as well. And butI have been lucky, like a lot
of these companies that I work withthis year. You know, Moto Bates
is one that I'm represented by representingand I love those bits. I've been
using them my whole entire career. You know, They've been a big state
in my career. You know,Skeeter Yamaha, I know all about them.
I've been surrounded by them since avery young age. A lot of

(54:04):
my best friends on the tour theyrun them FX Custom Rods. I've I
mean, I've used them. They'remy opinion, probably the best rods they
ever put my hand for the priceand I also believe in the people like
That's another big part about sponsors thatI believe in is the people that are
behind it. And when I geton the film with people, usually I
can tell if I want to bewith them in the first five minutes.
And also whenever you go on theirpages and you see a lot of local

(54:25):
people supporting them and you see alot of stuff like that. That's how
all my sponsors have been, Likeeverybody loves them in their local area of
Fish, USA. You know, when I posted the video, I got
an influx of people coming to meand saying, hey, you made a
right decision. You know, theydo a lot of help around locally.
They help a lot of anglers. And that's what I'm looking for is companies
that aren't you know, they're willingto help a lot of other people around

(54:46):
them and not just themselves. Andthose are people I'm trying to surround myself
with. And I've really enjoyed thisyear, you know, getting with these
companies that I have. So,yeah, that's awesome. He's a little
mature any for a twenty one yearold. Wow, I was you know
podcast with him? Well, ofcourse, job we've been friends for a
while, but they did a podcastwith him, and like the whole podcast,
you hear me going wow, yeah, wow, Like he's answering questions

(55:08):
and I'm like wow. And thenI watched Dave Mercer sat with him or
did the podcast with him and theother eight, right, the nine of
them that made it. And ofcourse he comes he saves the best for
last. I think he went andordered itn't he like how they finished?
He went from ninth to first,Yeah, from ninth to first, and
then of course he ends with him. And I could tell Dave was the
same way. Dave was like wow, yeah, and uh had some good

(55:30):
questions and then and then and Itold j T. I would have done
the same thing. He asked himone question that he had to He's he
asked him for a question to askhis next guest. It's a new thing
Dave's doing on his podcast Laiter. You get to give a question. You
don't know who's going to be thenext guest, and they have to he
has to come up with a question. And he did the same thing I

(55:52):
did, or would have done.He couldn't come up with it. Yeah,
I could have come up with anything. Was like because it's such an
important question, like like he makesit sounds so important, which it is,
and I was just like blown away. I was like, I really
don't know what to ask. Iwas like, because he wants us to
be like somewhat controversial but also notcontroversial, like enough to get some entertainment
at him. And I was like, dude, I got nothing. I

(56:14):
mean, I'll be honest, Iain't got anything. Well, you know,
that was a great answer. Imean, these these boats are like
the race cars. You know, they've got all these sponsors and I've often
won. I mean, I knowthe race car guys. You know they
have their marketing teams and stuff.Yeah, they got teams. But I
never understood how you know your professionalfishermen, you know, do that if
you have to go knocking on doorsor like you said, if you have
an agent or not. You said, some guys do. But I tell

(56:36):
you learning your business. You know, the fishing aspect, of course,
you've got that down. There's proofand the putting there, but then you're
learning the business aspect of it too, you know, and how to do
that. And that's that's just that'sjust awesome. It is, it is
awesome and and I'll tell you onething. I got to go with him
this week to introduce his rodgs toour friends at Palm Mata State Armory.

(56:57):
And he did a great job.He did. He did a great job
for a man who's just been insales for three months, I mean two
months. I mean really, Imean you're prior to that, your mentality
was I hate bass and I'm gonnatry and catch every single bass I can.
And now it's like, okay,I gotta go learn all these businesses
and talk to these people. Andhe believes in his rods. I can

(57:19):
tell you that he does believe inhis rods. And and you've got a
chance today to come out, andI want people to come out and pick
these rods up and hold them, because I think you're gonna be just as
amazed as Captain Scott and Peyton were. Because it was funny because it was
ten minutes of our conversation that youhad to call the owner of FX Customs
and get Scott on the phone withthem because he's already talking about loading his

(57:42):
boat with them. Oh yeah, they're impressive rods. Like I mean,
I've said it multiple times, likeif you go in your tackle shop.
You can grab any rod off theshelf and I'll compare it right next to
it, and I'll put an eightydollars rod against a five hundred dollars rod
Like it doesn't bother me at allto put them right next to each other,
because I know what it's gonna comeout at every single time. I
don't know how he does it forsuch a small well, I know how
because he's you know, he's nota selfish guy. He wants to help

(58:04):
anglers, and he's a guy thatwants to help anyone around him. And
that's why he puts such a cheapproduct product out to the public that's so
expensive to build. Yeah, andyou know, he's just a great guy.
Bob at FX Rods, You know, Bob, that's right. I'll
see who's lurking around that stack ofodds or hoping to how many you brought.
Hey, Luke, don't be grabbingany touching man, Luke, Luke,

(58:24):
you see a couple you could backlashover there. Well, we're gonna
try and get jt out on thewater here after the radio show and let
him show us some of these rodsin action, and we'll be here till
twelve o'clock. So y'all come by. Remember we've got some great giveaways,

(01:00:59):
right here in Calm Way. Justcome drive down here. We're easy to
get to. Ask JT. Igot a text from JT. I can't
find it. Yeah. I hadthe old location in the in the in
the I was like, I know, this is not right. I guess
they maybe moved. Yep, theybeen that mic just a little bit towards
your head. Don't feel bad.I did the same thing that went by

(01:01:19):
there. I'm like, wait aminute, he's over by the marina.
The marina is that right here?Yeah? I was about that girl had
the old walk them all outfit Googlemaps, if you go to that,
if you go to the website. It's right. We gotta we gotta get
them. The river rat needs tocontact Google. Yep, yep, you
gotta get that. Change because youdon't want that. That girl is telling
you not to go to the wrongplace. If you do, go road

(01:01:44):
to the website and get the directionsfrom there. Yeah, you gotta get
Google. You gotta, you gottauh yeah. So you need to reach
out to them, let them know. So that's for Russ Russ that or
that. That's for me on RussRuss. Where's Russ at? He's being
good? Rush? That's your newpaddle. Daddy's got a paddle. Oh

(01:02:05):
yeah, yep, daddy's got apaddle. Put a little heat on your
fanny. Hey, this time ofthe year can be really good bass fishing
here. A lot of people justlike salt water Chris Coudell, You,
a lot of people just put theirboats up and they don't like to fish
because of the weather. But bassfishing it can be great. What are
some good tips for somebody that isa local and may may not even bass
fish yet, But what are somegood baits, good ideas for somewhere to

(01:02:28):
start for somebody to go out andhave a good chance to catch in the
bass here and then walk them allblack river pead whatever. Yeah, I
mean personally, like i'd always justusually some of your I lock about one
bait in my hand, I justthrow it, you know, a chatter
bait, and I put a yellmotozaco on the back of it, and
I just I throw that about thewhole time. I usually don't even put
it down. And then you know, if I ever get around certain things,

(01:02:50):
if I got some brush or somethingoff a point, you know,
I'll throw like a crank bait orsomething through it or jig. But I
keep it very simple this summer year, and I cover water because usually this
ficial group up and with the floodsand everything government right going right now,
so they're gonna be moving. Butonce you find them usually grouped up.
So what kind of retriever are youdoing? Yeah, it was the water.
Water's colder, you know, airtemps are colder, faster, retrieve,
slow to retrieve. Really this timeof year, I just I fish

(01:03:15):
everything super fast, like it's justthe way I've always fished. I fished
extremely fast, and when you getaround enough of them, they will bite
and then you can slow down, but that was my question to speed.
Yeah, and that's just the oppositeof what we do with reds exactly.
That's just I mean, that's completelythe opposite. Yeah, they're lethargic.
They're just slow by slow, realslow, lipping the end of the rod

(01:03:37):
just to just to make it move. Yeah, I mean just lipped it
and drag it using heavier baits, light baits, half ounce chatter baits,
but all I use half ounce jigand if i'm flipping like anything, I'm
usually quarter We're using eighth ounced nedrigs and stuff like that. Yeah,
I'm just super super slow. Yeah, I fish a lot different than a
lot of people. It's just theway I've always fished. I Mean,

(01:04:00):
the thing is that I've learned ifyou're gonna be around winning fish, you
don't have the trick them, likeyou don't have the trick them if you
get around the right ones. Sowhen I get in the river, I'll
get in areas that I know aremore popular, like, man, how
do you know what's how do youknow? What is that place in the
river? All right? All bassfish? So yeah, where am I

(01:04:20):
going? You just said that?Take it for granted that I know what
that is, what that means,So tell me what that means. It
can mean a lot of different stuff. I mean, So you can either
get around areas where there's boat rampswhere you know there's been a lot of
release fish and just go around thereand pick fish off, or you can
go to areas that you know, like a lot of times this time of

(01:04:40):
year, you know, I'll goto Denning creeks, you know, creeks
that don't have an ox bow.You know, there's not as much current,
the fish don't have to fight ashard, and you can pick them
off there. But we're gonna findthose groups of fish at is getting on
like areas where there's a lot ofcurrent and then just getting out of it.
So if you're going down these creeksand you see one tree that sticks
out a little bit further than therest and there's like a big eddy behind
it, there's always gonna be fishingon that. That's like similar to red

(01:05:02):
fish. Yeah, all fish actuallydon't want to fight the current. They
go stand out of the current andeat in the current. They're burning that
energy sitting in the current. Yeah, So like this time of year when
it gets to the right time, when it gets the dead low tide,
I'll just go drive around and markeverything that Like if you can on dead
low tide, if you can seewith your eyes in the water and it
looks good, it's good. Likethat's just what I've always done. I

(01:05:25):
just drive around and look for stuffthat looks right, you know, getting
the bins and wherever those binds turns, the straightaways, and you find a
little bit of current, the lastbit of current or the first bit of
current hitting the curb or coming offthe curve, and you find something there
that's usually where they're gonna be,and that's where're gonna find your groups at.
And that's always what I target, like I've always learned, Like back
when I used to fish here along time ago, you know, I
just fish down a bank and I'dpick them off all day. But now

(01:05:47):
I just you know, fish alittle bit slower, go down a single
bank and pick them off. Butyou in your electronics mainly in the river.
Like when I'm in the river,I fished like twosan niners and everything.
I don't even turn all my graphs. Yeah, like in a river,
there's no need for a single graphon a boat, Like I don't

(01:06:08):
even turn a single thing on.That's what I like doing. Like,
yeah, that's realutely like life scope. I've it is definitely useful here.
I've never done it yet. It'sthe art of leading water. Yeah,
Like all like all river fishing isis driving down a bank and be able
to see it, like in visualizinghow the bank, how steep, or
how where the currents at, whereit's underneath the water that you can't see

(01:06:29):
in visualizing. So like, graphsaren't a big deal in this river.
So like if you can go outthere with zero graphs on a boat,
I've done it a bunch of timesevery single year. When I get a
boat, I usually have a trollomotor on it and no graphs, and
I usually can go out there andhave thirty forty fifty fish days. I
think that's great because you know,a lot of this stuff. The newer
generation is dependent on electronics, soany way to cheat it, and the

(01:06:49):
fact that you can do that withoutit, it's like living your life in
a foreign screen and your farm everyday. Yeah, you're very dependent on
it. But yet what you justsaid is not dissimilar to what we do
readfist. You know, you cango at low tide and pick out terrain
and understand how the fish are goingthe orientce same thing he just said,

(01:07:10):
I would be lost in the river. No, you wouldn't. And I'll
tell you this, You really wouldn'tbe because I'll tell you when Tony took
me under his wing and we startedand he started getting me hooked on bass
fishing. Which I can tell youFred that once you get out there and
do it, and once you startrealizing what you're looking for, and once

(01:07:32):
you feel that pump, if youfeel that thump on a crank bait,
or you feel that crank bait loadup, it's really not a thump.
It's more like you feel in thatand then all of a sudden it just
all of a sudden becomes heavy,or that thump on a chatter bait.
Chatter bait is a fun bait tofish, but once you feel it,
and then once you realize that thatyou're letting the fish tell you where they're

(01:07:54):
at. I mean as much assaltwater, I think in fresh water it's
even more so is you're really trulygonna fish that first bank For me on
the Tuesday and Thursday night deals isI let I fish that first bank or
a second bank, and if I'vecaught two fish, I let the fish
tell me where they are. They'reeither gonna be on grass or they're gonna
be on structure. And I'm talkingsummertime fishing. With this time of the

(01:08:17):
year, you're not gonna find muchgrass, or if you do, it's
underwater because it dies off in thewinter. Correct. But honestly, like
the biggest key, I think thatthat once I learned, and it took
me a year and a half reallyto get is you've got to be an
accurate castor fig because if you donot hit that point where they want it,

(01:08:39):
if you do not hit the spotthat they want it, you're gonna
go past fish after fish after fishand not get bit kind of like a
tail in red fish if you don'tput it where it needs to be.
Because what exactly you don't get thatbite? No, I'll tell you a
little scary you. You go outwith some of these guys and when you
take the first frog to the chestwhen they missed the hook set, it'll
scare the crap outea. It's onlydoing demonstrated out on my boat. Yeah,

(01:09:00):
we watched it, yep. Imean watch the fish eat the bait
and then it came was coming backto the boat. Yep. Are you
a frog fisherman? Do you domuch? Oh? For sure? I
mean you have to, especially likeanywhere in the country where like the fish
are set up shallow. A frogis the hard beat. The beat.
That's why it's as big as itis, because it's fun. I mean,

(01:09:23):
I love in the river. Justdon't pick it up a frog and
throwing it and then But like I'mjust like I don't have really favorite baits.
It's whatever to fish or like whateverI gotta do to make it work,
I'm happy doing. I mean,if you get when you leave in
the morning, you've got one tideon, oh yeah, you go all
right, you may have her favoritebait, but you got to go to

(01:09:43):
Yeah, I got go To's Likea chatter bait's my number one bait probably
used year round that a jerk bait. Maybe not in the river, but
like anywhere I go in the country, a chatter bait is useful, especially
in this river. Like I throwa chatterbait three hundred five days in this
river. For some reason, theylike it. I don't know why.
It's just something I've always thrown, something I love to pick up and just
into fish with. How much inbass fishing, how much do you think

(01:10:08):
is confidence in the angler bait confidenceby the angler versus bait versus the fish
really wanting that bait. I mean, you know what I mean. We
all know the old saying tackle isdesigned to catch the fishermen, not the
fish. So is it important thatyou find something that you like, you're

(01:10:32):
comfortable with, and fish with confidenceversus you know, Chris went, Chris
went yesterday and killed them on acertain yamamota worm and this color that you
don't use. I mean, doyou go immediately buy a pack of them?
Or do you say, oh no, they're going to bite my bait
too. Yeah. So one thingI've learned throughout this year is that baits

(01:10:55):
don't matter near as much in alot of ways, Like I don't know
how many times. So I havethis one partner, Tyler Williams, and
I'd have to say he's probably thebest jack fisherman in the country who will
also be on the Elite Series nextyear. Yes, he will also be
in the Elite Series and he wasmy partner through a lot of the year,
and he's probably one of the bestjig fishermen of all time. And
he makes fish bite it. Itdoesn't matter where he goes, he will

(01:11:18):
catch him on a three quarter undjack. So is it more action or
color this time of year? Sothat's a hard question. I really don't
believe in color very much. Likethat's just one thing I don't believe in
Like black and blue, green, pumpkin, white, you bout got it
covered. Yeah, Like, honestly, you're about as good as you're gonna
get peanut butter and jelly sometimes ifyou're on fish, I like peanut butter

(01:11:42):
and jelly. Yeah, Like that'sa good color. And then I mean
the thing is only time I reallylike, like in our river, I
genuinely don't think color matters that much. Like there's very few like either green,
pumpkin or white. I think thatpaint bubblegum that became so famous or
popular, I think it's because ofus. I think the thing is we
like to be able to see itsink and watch it get hit. Yeah,

(01:12:02):
you know what I mean. Honestly, I mean there are times where
color matters, like if you gothe Tuesday night or Thursday night or a
Saturday and you're catching on the samebank, Like if you catch them on
Thursday on a black and then yougo white, you know on Saturday,
and then on Tuesday you go yougotta switch it up. Like if you're
fishing for the same fish, colormatters and action matters. But if you're

(01:12:24):
actively searching for new fish, whichis what you have to do to stay
competitive, like it, color doesn'tmatter, Like I've learned that over this
year, Like when you find everywhereI went this year, if I found
a fresh group of fish that Iknow it was found, it doesn't matter
what you throw at them. Sothe flash is what they were acting to,
not the color on your chatter bait. It's the sound and then also
the flash versus what color skirt yougot on it, right, Yeah,

(01:12:46):
I mean it's it's a it's ait's combine a little bit of everything,
the action, the sound. Likeyou're saying it's a reaction, but exactly
it's pure reaction. Like it doesn'tLike a lot of times, it don't
matter if it's a swim jig orchatterbait. It's whatever. You have confidence
in and it's coming by their faceso fast. That's here's the number one
where reason why I fish fast,And here's what I believe, and I
think it's the number one reason whypeople should fish fast is I would rather

(01:13:13):
like I not have the trick tenfish in a day and get five bites.
I'd rather blow a bait by twohundred fish and force them to eat
it. Because when you got apredator and you bring something like a cat,
dare you dare Yeah, if yougot dare yet, Yeah. If
you got a cat and you're justworking and moving a little thing super super
slow, yeah, he might pawdit and then you might trick him a

(01:13:35):
few times. But if you takeand just swing it by his face every
single time it comes by his facesuper super fast, he's gonna snatch it,
jump on it, attack it.The same thing with a bass.
If if I do that with twohundred bass and just blow something by them
super fast, I will get enoughof them the trigger and when they when
they do trigger, they usually eatit right, compared to like a fish

(01:13:56):
that you gotta like trick and like, I just don't like that. It's
not it's not glad. I'm recordingthis, like, tricking fish is not
really my deal. I just lovefinding fresh groups now this there are times
like I think it's a lot easierto trick a fish really than it is
the blow blowbaits by a lot offish. Because there's been tournaments this year.
If I don't figure out anything inpractice, I would just go to

(01:14:17):
the most popular areas in the lakeand just go pick it apart super slow,
because I know that's what I gotto do to compete. That's what
I gotta do to stay alive. You know what I love this year is
your mom and I became well, your mom and I become friendstance. You
came to the show year three yearsago when you won the Toyota Series event,
and your mom and I were textingall year long, and and I
would text her before, how's hefeeling? Because I don't want to bother

(01:14:40):
you because I tried not to,but I know I texted you and blew
you up a lot, but itwas more complimentary than anything. And your
mom would say, he's not onfish or he's struggling, and he would
go he would finish second, hewould finish second, he would finish ninth
or whatever, and uh, butgoing into it, I mean, the
confidence makes a difference when you whenyou blast off on day one. Yeah,

(01:15:02):
for sure. Like there's certain thingsthat I don't know how much it
plays like there's confidence in certain things. But you like there's tournaments that I
wasn't on fish, Like I'll goover one that was a really big one
for me is the tournament at youFall, Oklahoma. Was a tournament I
had the worst practice of my life. I mean early in practice, I

(01:15:25):
found them in one creek. Butthe thing was a tournament a couple of
months ago. Was one out ofthat creek, like a really big one.
It was a tech warss pro circuit. Everybody was in there. So
it was really good the first threedays and then it was done. After
that done. And I remember thethird day of practice, I was in
there and I was fishing. Iwas like, I was throwing a jig

(01:15:45):
these fish that were biting really easilybefore, and I throw it in the
brush pibably pulling out just it wouldand they would cut it loose, as
like all right, if they're doingthat now, yeah, if if they're
already doing that type of thing rightnow, in two days, it's completely
useless to even try, Like I'mnot I don't feel like throwing a jig
now. And then first day ofa tournament, gotta throw away a shaky

(01:16:08):
head. In the last day ofthe tournament, I gotta wait thirty seconds
to let a wacky rick sink downthere to get a bite. So what
I did, I said, I'mdone, I'm gonna I scrapped my entire
part. I spent three and ahalf days in one one creek, scanned
the whole entire thing out front toback, and I pulled the plug.
I was like, I'm not doingthis. I'm done. I can't I
can't fish like that. And Istarted. I went back to my research

(01:16:29):
because I do a lot of researchto places, and I knew, like
those a couple banks that you knowfamously the tournament's always done good on these
couple banks. And I said, all right, I know this is where
the probably the biggest population of fishes. Yeah, and I'm just gonna put
my boat down on turnament. LikeI had no clue. On day one
of the tournament, I literally droveto where off limits was, set my
boat down right outside of it,and just started fishing. I never picked

(01:16:49):
my Trollo motor up for the firstsix hours of tournament. I wasn't diwaled
in Like it was just you gottayou gotta go back to your research.
You gotta go back to what youdo best, which I picked up a
jerk bait of chatter bait started goingdown. Just go fish fish, yeah,
fish hard. Yeah. So wellI had confidence in doing that,
but it wasn't like I know I'mgonna catch them. It was like,

(01:17:12):
all right, if there's fish hereand people catch them here, I'm gonna
catch them too, right, Andthat was kind of what I did for
that tournament. And that's one thingthat's why research is such a big deal.
Like when you travel outside of thisarea, there's not a lot of
research to do in the walk themall you can, but it's it's it's
pretty pretty useless, right. Butlike when you go to places where there's
been a lot of tournaments, Ican go on my phone and tell you

(01:17:32):
exactly how it's going to go down. Like I can tell you where all
top ten boats are going to be. I can tell you what base they're
going to be done with. Ican tell you how they're going to do
it. Just off of research,And that's kind of what I did.
You follow Oklahoma, I did aton of research. I understood where I
was going to go down, andI just happened to put my boat down
and you know, get the rightbikes throughout the first day. Do you

(01:17:54):
go back and find like old coverageof tournaments on these places and watch it?
Okay? I just thought I wasgonna, I figure the preparation it
pays off. Yeah, preparation,I think, like, honestly, in
my opinion, I think research isthe single handily the most important thing in
bass fishing. Like how many daysdo you pre fish before a tournament?

(01:18:15):
So I pre fish a lot, like long probably I probably had two hundred
and seventy five to three hundred daysin the water last year. And I'll
I mean, we only have ninetournaments five there's seven days. So leading
up to it, do you alwaysfish the day before? Yeah? You
fish three days before then let thefish rest so you fish. You have
the tournament, so you have fourand a half days of practice. You

(01:18:35):
have the Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, half a day Wednesday,
and then tournament starts Thursday. Andthat's how it lays out. And that's
what I practice. But also Ipracticed before that. But the thing is,
like I've talked to a lot ofpeople and I tell people, you
should already know exactly what you're doingbefore you even back in your boat,

(01:18:56):
Like most of these places that there'sresearch done. You should know exactly what
to throw, where to throw it, and when when, do everything before
you even back in your boat. And all you're doing is verifying the information
that you've already processed a lot oftimes. Right, yeah, you're just
reinforcing that. Uh, let meask you this. If you going to
you in an area four minutes fourminutes all right on your pre fish.

(01:19:19):
If you go in there on yourpre fish, are you if you're catching
those fish? You're leaving them? And then oh yeah, okay that yeah
that was I figure dad. Yeah, So whenever I go to a place,
let's say, I'm like, yougot to understand also comes down to
research. You got to know exactlywhat it's going to take to do good
in the tournament. How much ittakes to cut a check, how much
it takes to make a top ten, how much it takes to win,

(01:19:41):
and then how your practice goes youand you think, all right, I
can win it, I can topten it, I can get a check,
and then in practice, whatever youthink you can do, that's where
you got to stop. So ifit takes five three pounders to cut a
check, all right, I catchmy first three pounder, I throw in
there, I get another bittom likeusually fish running groups of size, I'm
gonna shake that. I'm gonna I'mgonna I'm not gonna set the hook on

(01:20:01):
them, let them go them exactly, don't educate them, leave, go
find new stuff. And sometimes itdoesn't work out. Sometimes I pull in
these areas. I caught a threepounder, shook another one off, it's
a one pounder and there's nothing elsethere, and I get burned. So
it's a That's probably the number onemost difficult thing I've done this year is
learning how to practice, Cuz Iused to just shake everything off like I

(01:20:21):
thought that was the deal, likego there, shake everything off, go
back and catch them. And thenI started noticing my tournaments were just doing
this like up down, up down. I was like, there's no way
this is the right way. Sothis year I started just setting the hook
on everything, and I said,if I'm a good enough angler. Every
fish tells you a story, andevery single fish, if I can get
more stories put together through my practice, I'll know exactly what to do and

(01:20:43):
I'll be able to adjust on thefly. I like that, So that's
what I did this year. Instead, I didn't shake off hardly any fish
this year, and I was ableto adjust a lot better in tournaments this
year than I have in previous years. But it you can't do that like
when I was first starting out,if I caught every fIF I want to
catch a fish in the tournament becauseI want to know how to adjust.
It takes a long time to learnhow to adjust the fish. And I'm

(01:21:04):
lucky enough to be with on thewood. I'm able to be on the
water enough to be able to understandwhat every single fish tells me. But
you know it's a tough thing todo. Yep, Well, listen,
