Speaker 1 (00:16):
Bulkin of cho Talk you a special podcast off the
Brandon Steelheads right here our news talk stock a ninety
sixty AM. My name is Mike carrif to lead us
along with Brendan Langer, both broadcasters off the Brampton Steelheads,
and we have a good, good podcast on episode six
lined up for you today. But first let's start off Brendan.
How are you.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
I'm doing pretty well, Mikey, Thanks thanks for asking. You know,
it's been it's been pretty nice, pretty nice weather here recently,
even into September into late September, going into October, it's
still been staying pretty warm out. So I've been playing
a lot of golf. Yesterday, I had a tournament with
a Peel Crime stopper, saw some Steelheads representatives out there.
Had had a quick chat with with Mike Hastings on
(00:59):
the core as he the steel Heads had had a
booth there and they were at one of the holes,
so saw him and had a quick chit stop and
chat with him, and then played some golf yesterday. So
that was a good time. Other than that, though, you know,
it's just kind of the kind of the same really
really watching a lot of baseball recently, of course because
of the playoffs coming up. You know, everybody kind of
getting everything sorted out. Clinch shoheo, Tani going on crazy runs.
(01:23):
So I've been I've been pretty locked in on that.
Other than that, though, you know, just working and it's
pretty much it.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
I can't wait for baseball, Dan, That's me, seriously. I
think the season goes way too long. One hundred and
twenty games.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
And then sixty two, one hundred and sixty two.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Whatever it is. It seems like two hundred and sixty.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Two and then got especially especially when your team is
out of it, that's when it really feels long.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Well the Jay stink right, oh oh they do. Yeah,
like they stink, and I mean that's our team right right.
But they do have a good future ahead of them.
I think. I think next year, I think they have
to make a couple of moves here and there. Uh,
and I think they'll be okay. But yeah, baseball whatever show.
Hey I heard I saw hate Tony got the fifty
and fifty. Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Probably maybe the best game ever in baseball history.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
It was.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
He was six for six with three home runs, ten RBIs,
two stolen bases, passes, fifty to fifty gets to fifty
one fifty one in the same game. Yeah, it's crazy stuff.
And he might be available to pitch in the playoffs.
That'll be crazy if that.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
You think he's gonna think Do you think show Hay
is going to be just as exact effective if he
pitches and and hits.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I think so. I think
it'll be. I think he'll be pretty similar because he's
done it before. I mean, maybe has he got fifty
to fifty, but uh, he's he's obviously shown that he's
an MVP caliber hitter. Well he's a pitcher, so I
don't think there'd be much of a drop off. Who
knows though to Tommy John surgery, so you never know
what what happens after that and if you're gonna be
necessarily the same pitcher you were before. But but I
(03:01):
could see it still working out pretty well.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
So what about the Dodgers. Are they gonna choke again
in the playoffs? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Probably, I hope. I think they will.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Stand the Dodgers, Yeah, I mean neither.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
I I don't know. I think there's there's not a
team that just like jumps out to you in either
league that I think is like this team is a
is a world beater and they're gonna win the World Series.
Especially in the American League. I don't really see anybody
in the American League that seems that good. But the Dodgers,
of course, they're They're always going to be up there.
I think the Brewers, who already clinched or have a
pretty good opportunity this year to make a make a
(03:35):
deep run and then I know I'm leaving. You know,
the Phillies. Of course, they have the best record in baseball.
So the Phillies, yeah, they're gonna be in there as well.
The Diamondback has been playing good baseball too, so I
think it'll be pretty competitive in the National League. And
I don't see the Dodgers making it all the way.
They just don't have enough pitching. They don't have enough pitching.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Right, what happened to Baltimore? They were doing They just
kicking everybody's behind and then now they're just losing like crazy.
I know they won the other day, but man, I mean, yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Their offense is falling off a cliff. They have no
relievers and they won't I don't think they'll be going
very far.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
They steak, they stink too, But I'm not surprised with
them actually, So I wanted to you know, I'm not
a big Yankee fan obviously, and I really wanted them,
you know, to really do bad this year. But again,
you know, they make the playoffs, and they're.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Always good, always around there, always there.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
They got the money, they can buy whatever they want
and whatnot. So but hey, baseball playoffs are awesome, right,
and that's where you know, last year what we expected
Arizona to go all the way right, almost all the
way last year. So yeah, I like them. I like
them as a team. Yeah, No, everything's good on my side.
I mean, you know, same thing here, just working away
and stuff like that. Saw my Browns get their first
(04:49):
win on Sunday, Yeah, yeah, yeah. And Deshaun Watson was
I mean, he wasn't there. Me didn't looked that good.
But the first drive you looked good, and then after
that it was just not too good. But the defense
was really good. I mean, they got a safety at
(05:10):
Trevor Lawrence in the end zone. They're pressuring Lawrence like crazy.
The Denzel Ward was good. The running back to the
running game is pretty good for Cleveland. So yeah, I mean, hey,
to start. But uh, I don't know, Shawn. I just
have to say that to Shawn. He's not my guy.
(05:30):
He's not my guy.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
I think that's I think that's a feeling that is
felt across Brown's nation. I don't think a lot of
people are extremely high on on Deshaun Watson. Of course
with the off field part of it as well, that
goes into it too.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Yeah, absolutely absolutely. So Yeah, other than that, you know,
I had my birthday the other day. I turned. I
turned a big two zero, right.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
There you go, And it was nice.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Yeah, you know, I had my son and just as
long as the family's together and all that kind of stuff,
I'm just saying, you know, then that's all that matters.
Right So, And I'm the reason why I say that
because I'm very grateful to have him. And we played
and that was it. You know, I had family over.
We have family over and stuff like that, and that
was it. Really didn't really do much for my birthday.
(06:20):
So I like it that way. I like it, lott Key, Right.
It's not the way. It's not the way it used
to be when you go out every weekend and party
it up early birthday and stuff. I used to do
that all the time, right, But now it's just like
you know, you have your family, you have your close
friends over that's all that matters to me, right, So.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Yeah, one hundred percent. I couldn't agree more. I've never
been a huge birthday guy, like going out and doing
stuff on my birthday. Always just you know, a couple
of close friends, family. That's kind of what I what
I'm doing on my birthday as well.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
So all right, so here's my question to you.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Yes, out of all the holidays.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Since we're talking about family stuff like that, what is
the holiday.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
You like the most? It's a Christmas, I think is
why is my number one holidays?
Speaker 1 (07:04):
All right?
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Christmas for me? I think that's just the time when,
like you know, everybody gets together and I just like
hanging out with everyone. So that's cool. Thanksgiving also similar.
I like Thanksgiving as well. But yeah, i'd say I'd
say Christmas, how about you?
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Thanksgiving? And Easter?
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Yeah, Easter is a good one too. That's a tough
one to leave off.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Yeah, there's reason reason why. Reason why is because Christmas.
I love Christmas too. I don't despise Christmas. I love Christmas.
You're kidding me? You know, it's more for the kids
and stuff like that and all that and whatnot, right so,
uh yeah no, but when you look at Thanksgiving and
you look at Easter, you know, I like it just
the family gets together and you don't have to give
(07:43):
presents away and all that kind of stuff and worry
about this and worry about that and the stress. You know,
it's all about getting together for me, right so, and
that's why I like those two holidays, right, you know,
no stress, zero absolutely zero stress. Just as long as
everybody shares the stuff, we're fine. Especially on Thanksgiving.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
That can be stressful sometimes though, if you're not getting enough.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Oh I know, well I know I've been there. I've
been there, and I've seen it because we have pretty
big family get togethers for like, yeah, we have a
huge family, right so, and we when we get together,
we get together. So sometimes that happens where you know,
they take it too money. You know, I talked about
this report, Hey take it easy on the stuffing, and
they turn back and they laugh at you. All right,
So these people in my family, oh sorry, I'll leave
(08:31):
some for you, they say, I'll leave them for you, okay,
And then when you go to get some more than
it's all gone, so at least not enough that you
want right right, right, right right, all right. So here's
where we've got coming up on the show today. We're
gonna talk about the preseason and a hole for the
(08:52):
Brenton steel Heads, and we'll talk about the game, the
recent most preseason game against the Barry Colts and I'm
glad preseason is over. We'll talk about just to say that,
we're going to talk about Kobe Barlow. I mean, there's
some huge rumors going around that he's going to go
somewhere and we'll talk about that as well. And well,
we're going to have our Eastern Conference predictions. We're not
(09:14):
going to go Western Conference folks, because this is a
Steelheads broadcast broadcast podcast broadcast, I guess you could say that,
So we're going to keep it East, right, So everybody,
I notice everybody's kind of doing every podcast is doing
their predictions or whatnot. But guess what, these are the
right predictions coming up here this podcast. So we're going
(09:34):
to talk about that, and then we're going to talk
about the most boring ist sport to watch ever on
TV and what sport I feel shouldn't even be a
sport which makes me sick. So we'll talk about that
as well. So that's what we're going to talk about
in an episode six here of Trot Talk right here
in news Talk Saga nine sixty am. So, uh, yeah, Brendan,
(09:59):
I mean, you look like you know you've been golfer.
But where's the tan? Man?
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah, I know, I'm pretty scared of this. I'm pretty
scared of the sun. So I uh, I put a
lot of sunscreen on and were wear a hat at
all times when I'm outside. Yeah, I don't uh, I
don't get I don't get too much of the tan.
I kind of stay the same uh, same shade all year.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Right, Well, you're lucky because I tan easy. I don't know.
I mean if I go outside for like ten minutes
or fifth nine, for about an hour, hour and a half,
I'll get a tan. I'll get a tan. And I
try not to get the farmer's tanya. It drives me.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yeah, I have that. I have that going with uh.
With playing golf, I just burn quick. So that's why
I gotta get the sunscreen on fast. But but yeah,
that won't be a problem for too much longer because
you know, summer's ended, and then we're gonna be in
the rink and we're gonna be in then.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Yes, you know we're gonna be in the rink a
lot coming up, so uh looking forward to that. Uh yeah, man,
So the season is just around the warner. But I mean,
let's talk about I mean, let's just let's talk in
the beginning. Yeah, that's talks a preseason, right, so the
whole What did you think about the Steelheads preseason? Let's
(11:11):
talk about that first.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Yeah, we'll get into it. So of course, you know,
they win just the one game they win yesterday at
the time of recording this, so their final preseason game
that was playing on this past Thursday, two to one
against the Barry Colts. But again, wins and losses, you know,
they don't really matter too much in the in the preseason.
It's just good to see some of these young guys.
Manny Amato gets on the board, he gets his first
(11:34):
goal technically in the ohl. I know it's preseason, but
still that's going to build some confidence going forward for
some of the young guys. You get a look at
some of the new players, some guys that are maybe
trying to make the team, As a whole, though, I
think it was a pretty successful preseason for the Steelheads,
and a lot of players, of course, were away in
training camps. He had ten players go. I know a
few of them have come back already, as Jack Vanvolson,
(11:56):
who's back. He was in the game yesterday. So I
think as a whole it was pretty successful. And we've
talked about it before where if you can get out
of preseason with everybody healthy, that's the biggest success. And
I think so far everybody's healthy, knock on wood, at
least to my knowledge, So I think that's the most
successful aspect of it, if everybody can get to the season,
(12:17):
and you know, it's not too far away now, I
guess a week today I'm recording this, So so if
everybody's healthy, I think that's a success.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
It was a success for one one injury, that kind
of there's only one. Lucas Cardmeres took a high stick
last night against the Barry Colts and there was only
a four minute minor four minute double minor to me,
could have been five. But yeah, so he came off
and he was bleeding profusely. Apparently the trainer I didn't see.
(12:45):
I didn't see been a broad brower on the ice,
but apparently he was looking for it too, that's what
very broadcast said. So, you know, hopefully Lucas is going
to be okay. But that's the only injury besides that.
But Lucas will be all right. I mean, you put
it full showing that guy and he'll he'll play through anything, right,
So get the tooth done and not hockey, right. I
(13:06):
hope to see it.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Yeah, yeah, things happen out there on the ice. But
but overall, a pretty good performance by the by the
Steelheads yesterday, and you know it was there was again
a lot of young players in the lineup. We just
mentioned it that some some players were gone and most
of their regulars weren't around, But you got some young
guys who were kind of in elevated roles. They got
to play on the top line, you got to play
in different I think Will Egleton was playing with Carmiras
(13:29):
and Martone to start the game, so that's a little
bit of a different look. You had some of the
youngsters up on the top line playing and Troy Patton
out there, who's who's probably gonna get into quite a
few games this year. For the steel Heads, and he's
looked pretty good in preseason, but an overall sort of
good complete game. They're outshot a little bit, but good
to see Ivan Covid back in the net as well,
(13:50):
and then making some big, big stops in that game yesterday.
So that's definitely a positive going into the game, going
into the season. I guess I should say.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Yeah, he was, I mean, he was top notch. He
was He made thirty six to thirty seven says and
he looked like he was he's ready for the season.
But yeah, he was great last night, phenomenal. Made a
couple of great stops, like first class stops. I mean,
we know Jack can do. But you know what impressed
me about the preseason and again the rookies, we talked
about it, but a couple of guys that have really
(14:19):
impressed me. Of course, you know we talked about Troy Patton,
both impressed us. But how about Owen cart right back
in the TWN zone right playing defense. He's been really
playing a good stay at home defense, right and he's
tough and he's been able to hit to take the
hit for a sixteen year old. So and another guy
(14:41):
that's really impressed me. That really impressed me last night
was Kieran Mkowski. He was all over the place last night.
I mean, he's he was like a human bowling ball,
hitting everything in sight, right, and you can see, you
know that he's not scared, and his shots gotten a
lot better. A couple of times he went hard to
the to the net and didn't score. But those are
the things you'd like to see in the preseason from
(15:01):
the young guys, right, And they really and the Coulick
as well, the Kulick looks like, yeah, he's looking more confidence.
His war check was really good last night, really good, right.
I know it wasn't you know, the two A teams
or anything like that, but yeah, again, you know, this
is the preseason, and this is what we uh, It's
all about the young guys getting getting to play because
(15:23):
you never know how deep this Steelheads team is. But
if somebody goes down, you got to be ready. These
guys got to be ready.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
One percent. No, you're completely right, And that's why the
preseason is so valuable because you get these guys opportunities
to play. And and yeah, there's a lot of people
fighting for spots on the back end, but we know
at some point in the year, whether it be injuries
or performance or whatever it is, Cartwright's going to be
in there and he's going to be playing a string
of games. Same with Upfront, with with Patton and Tomato
and all these names that were brought up that that
(15:53):
that definitely will. We'll be getting some run this year
at one point or another.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
Absolutely all right. On that note, Langer, we're going to
take a break and when we come back, we're going
to talk about a little Koobe Barlow for everybody knows
who he is, Winnipeg Jet Jets draft pick who is
rumored to be going somewhere. But we'll talk about that
after the break. As you are listening to Trout Talks,
(16:19):
podcast of the Brampton Steelheads right here on News Talk
Saga nine sixty am, Welcome Bauck to Trout Talk right
here on News Talk Saga night sixty am, the official
podcast of the Brampton Steelheads. Mike care Felita's along with
Brendan Lang and we are broadcasters for the Brampton Steelheads
that I see Mississauga.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
I don't think no, okay, thanks, so I think you're good.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
Hey, you never know, right, That's why I had that,
all right, So welcome back everybody, and we want to
talk a little Colby Barlow here. All right. So Colby
Barlow owen sound attack. Probably one of the best players
out there right now, and we know that he's drafted
by the winning Pig Jets season Winnipeg Jets camp right now.
(17:03):
The rumor mill is going around like crazy, the Oshaua Generals.
That seems to be the biggest rumor right now. Apparently
that he's gonna go to Oshawa. But I mean he's
from the area, the Barry area, right, so apparently they
want in on him too, And he has said he
(17:24):
wants to play closer to home than I keep hearing.
He wants to play in the Oshawa. He does not
want to go back to Owenson and the reason why
obviously is because they're rebuilding and he wants to win
a championship. Right But I'm looking at the draft cover.
Let's look at the draft cover. Okay, Now, let's look
at who can make these moves, right And we're gonna
(17:46):
pull this up right now, and we're gonna go through
this as I go through my beautiful iPad here and okay,
here we go, all right, Okay, Soshwa. So if the
Oshawa generals want to scoop them up next year, they
don't have a second round pick. Next year they have
(18:10):
a third and a fourth. They don't have a fifth
or sixth. They have a seventh. That's is twenty twenty five, folks,
A ninth, tenth, and eleventh they have Now twenty twenty six,
they have a second, a third, two fourth, Say yeah,
two fourths, one fourth of their own one sounds fourth
winsor's fifth their own, six, seven, eight, ninth, ten and eleven.
(18:35):
Now they're gonna have to give.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
Up a lot, No, a lot.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Now do you do this if you're Oshawa? Yes, draft
cover being so low.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Yeah, the draft covers low, of course. But I do
think that Oshawa's I mean, they obviously had a great
year last year, probably contended when I don't think they
necessarily thought they were going to be there, and then
end up obviously winning the Eastern Conference and playing the
London Knights in the finals. I think this kind of
in a similar sense of here in Brampton, to kind
of bring it back closer to home, is a year
(19:12):
that they're gonna try to go for it again because
they were maybe a little bit ahead of schedule last year.
And yeah, it's gonna get tough with like you said,
with the draft cover being low, but I do think
it's still a move that they definitely should entertain because
of them wanting to compete and having this year to
compete as well.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
So they'll probably be like a SAG and sagon not
pretty much as zero picks. Right, they pretty much gave
everything away last year, so if they do, they're probably
gonna have to give away everything and then it's gonna
be another it's gonna be a massive rebuild next year. Yeah,
I mean it's all in or all or nothing, right, So,
but that's the biggest rumor. But if he goes to Barry,
Barry's got a lot of draft picks still in their
(19:50):
coveroard to play with. So it's gonna be interesting to
see what happens with Kolby Barlow. But if you guys
go to Ausha, I could see a couple of players
going the other way as well, Uh, to to oh
and Sound a team that's rebuilding, of course, a very
very very young team. I mean big time young. So
I mean I think they're one of the oldest guys
is uh Carter George Right, nineteen year old, probably the
(20:16):
best player L like Kings draft pick goal tender. But anyways,
so I can see a couple of players going that way,
but it'll be interesting to see what happens uh with that.
So I don't know, like I just ifsh okay. So
here's here's my thing. So if Ostwa makes that move, okay, fine,
then I go up. And now we're gonna go up
(20:39):
and we're gonna scroll through the Brampton Steelheads draft covered, right,
So what does Brampton have to play with? Well, let's
go through it, shall We We have three seconds next year, okay,
twenty five Ottawa's third, Branford's fourth.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
Two fifths, a sixth, sevenths, two sevenths and eighth to
ninth and eleventh twenty twenty six two seconds, two thirds,
I mean the fifth, sixth, welf, seven a ninth and
two techs Now, Okay, So what I'm trying to get
(21:21):
to is say, if Oshawa.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
Does acquire Colby Barlow, fine, but the steel lights off
the drop cupboard to acquire two really maybe two or
three really really good hard nose dominant players with this
draft cover, and you know the Steelers are going for
it this year.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
M hmm. Yeah, Like I said, I mean, it's kind
of a similar spot as the general. So yes, if
they do go out and get Kolby Barlow, I still
think I think going into the year, Brampton is pretty
set with what they have right now, and I think
maybe like a fringe addition kind of gets made before
the season starts. But I do think that the roster's
pretty set. Talking more so when we get down, you know,
(22:01):
further in a year to the trade deadline, and then
when there's teams that maybe thought they were going to
compete that are out of it a little bit, or
you know, things like that happen throughout a season, so
there could be some guys that become available. And yet
with the draft cover that you mentioned, I mean just
having three second round picks this year, two next year,
a lot of a lot of high end picks that
(22:22):
should go another way. So I mean, yes, you could
the Seals could easily make two different trades.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
Us.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
Now I'm not saying two trades to trade for like
complete star players, but two trades to trade for guys
who will be extremely or will contribute a lot. Yes, yes,
they will be very They will contribute quite a bit
to to the roster. And of course another n OA
spots still still available as well, so that's also something
to look at.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
Yeah, there you go. I mean that Oway spot. I mean,
that's gonna be interesting to see what James Richmond does
with that OA spot, right, so and assistant general manager
Mike Doyle and and everybody, they all get together and
talk about it, of course, but it's gonna be a
because who's you know, as you said, who's going to
be out, who's going to be uh you know selling,
who's going to be adding? Right? So, I mean, yeah,
(23:10):
I can see maybe maybe maybe the Steel it's making
maybe a little tweak maybe here and there before the
season starts. But you know, the real season is going
to start right after after the trade deadline. Who's in it,
who's not? Right? And that's what I always say, The
real season always starts after the trade thataline, I expect
the Steel Eights to be up there and we'll talk
about our predictions and whatnot. Before we get to predictions.
(23:32):
I just wanted before all this kind of stuff, I
just want to say, these are predictions, ladies and gentlemen,
And you know it's before the season. Of course, we're
you know, prognosticating, and everybody prognosticates, so take it easy
if we don't say your team's up there and stuff
like that. If you watch this, I mean, what do
(23:53):
you think, Langer.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Yeah, no, that's that's good. I think that's how it
should It should always be. I mean, predictions it's so
hard to predict. I mean, especially with with in junior hockey,
especially so hard to predict in junior hockey. So many
young players. I think you just never know, like what
players can take a jump from year to year. Like,
there's just so many variables that go into it. So
it's it's really difficult to predict. And like you said,
(24:17):
you know, it's uh, they're just predictions and it doesn't
necessarily mean that they're they're gonna be true. It's not
like what we say. It just happens. So yeah, that's
kind of where it is. But it's just a fun
exercise to do to just kind of see, you know,
where you think the people the teams are gonna be,
and then and then compare it at the end of
the year and see if you know the right sense.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
Yeah, you know, you look at two years ago, I mean,
just to add on to what you're saying two years
ago with the Peterborough Pete, like everybody expected them to
like really really be bad all year season long and
all sudden the added right.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Yeah, and and any I mean even the even the
other way too. With with the Steelheads a few years back.
Remember they were in the top ten in the CHL
rankings and then you know, a part way through the
year just it didn't work out for whatever reason, they
had to pivot, they had to sell pieces off Flake.
I mean that stuff happens all the time. We can
talk a little bit about the new CHL rankings with
the steel Heads up there in number two behind Medicine Hat.
(25:09):
So that's a pretty big, pretty big pad on the
back to James Richmond and staff and putting that team together.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
Unbelievable number two in the CHL top ten and number
three where the London Knights Oshwa Generals are in the
top ten over the Branford Bulldog Branford. Four HL teams
in the top ten. I've never seen that.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
I remember three, three in the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
It's crazy. I've never seen that before. I've never seen it,
So it would be interesting to see how that plays out, man,
because especially the East. The West isn't the West isn't
They're not They're not that strong. This year the tides
have turn. Now it's the East that's strong. The West
still it's London and who else. I mean, I can't
think of anyone else really, I mean.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Yeah, I kind of like, Yeah, they're young, but I
mean they could could be good. I think Susce Marino
might be around there as well. They were good last year,
so I like middle of the pack. I feel like
they're they're kind of sitting around, but yeah, it's I
mean London, you know, they're They're always going to be
up there. It doesn't matter what year it is, what
happened the year before, it's always going to be London
(26:17):
in the top three. They probably win that conference this year,
I would think. I know we're not going into Western
Conference predictions per se, but I think it's pretty safe
to say that a lot of people would pick London
to win that conference.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
I mean, Eastern Cowen if he comes back from the leagues.
Yeah that this team is absolutely stock. But only thing
to me is probably the goaltending. I would say probably
for the London Nights Willmore. They have a lot of
confidence in this kid, right and we seen him, we
seen him well, we've seen him once last year he
played in the missis when they were in the Mississauga Steelheads. Like, okay, okay,
(26:52):
not spectacular whatnot. I thought the Steelers could have won
that game, but there was a couple of mistakes, but whatnot.
We won't get into that. But uh, I don't know,
Olwen Wilmore. I mean, what do you think?
Speaker 2 (27:04):
Yeah, I mean you just again, you never know what
kind of jumps guys make. And of course he was
playing with Michael Simpson before that, so you know he
has a pretty good mentor guy that he played with there, Yeah,
for a while. So again, it's it's just it's hard
to predict kind of season to season, especially for goalies.
Especially for goalies, it's really difficult to say. But I
think London has a pretty good track record of if
(27:26):
they believe in guys that they're probably pretty good. So
I would think he's he's going to be very solid
back there for them.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
Yeah, totally. Yeah, I think so too. I think you'll
have a good defense in front of him. But we'll see,
we will see. I mean, time will tell, I mean
in the Western Conference, will just kind of go through
some teams. Yeah, you mentioned the Sue Greyhounds. Maybe they
might take a step back this year. There's uh, I
don't know. I just they had a lot they went
for work kind of last year. So yeah, so I
(27:56):
don't know. It's tough to say. I mean, I feel
like Kitchener.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Kitchener was Kitchener. Of course they're selling off as well,
so they're gonna be you know, a little further down too.
But but you never know again, Yeah, yeah, possibly, we'll
never you never know. It could be could be coming
Eerie again. That's another team we thought they'd be better
last year than they probably ended up being, So it'll
be It'll be interesting to see the Western Conference. Really,
I think it's pretty wide open besides London, so there's
(28:22):
there's a chance for some teams to really turn it
on and have a good year.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
All right. So there's our prediction, Leads and gentlemen, London
and number one and second third, two to ten. It's
a tossome. It's a toss up. I'll throw the Eerie
in there. I'll throw in there right. Other than that,
I don't know, I seriously don't know, and it's hard
(28:46):
for it's hard to say that. I mean, saganaw, I
anticipate them to sell I really do. Yeah, I do.
I mean I don't know your thoughts about that because
they have nothing, they have nothing in the draft draft cupboard.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
Yeah, I could see it happening. I mean, they still
have a few guys too that they can put together.
I mean, if Porrect comes back, I mean, they're still
going to be, you know, in decent shape, especially with
what just we talked about in the West with it
being pretty wide open. So I think they're kind of
in a tough spot really going into the year, and
they'll have to decide kind of how the season starts
and see where.
Speaker 1 (29:17):
They want to go there. The West will be interesting.
All Right, we come back Eastern Conference predictions with myself
and Brenda Lang and yeah, wow, we can't wait to
tell you as you're listening to Troetalk right here at
News Talk Saga ninety sixty. Aye. All right, welcome back
to Troe Talk right here, News Talk Saga ninety sixty. Ayeah.
Mike Caref lead us along with Brendan Lang, the official
(29:39):
podcast of the Brampton Steelheads. All Right, so we're going
to get to our Eastern Conference predictions. Brendan, would you
like to go first or second? I feel like this
is a game show here.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
You know what, you can lead it off, Mikey, you
can lead off. I know, I know a lot of
people are anticipating mikey Kay's prediction. So let's let's get
back to the people.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Okay, Am I going ten to one?
Speaker 2 (30:01):
Or am I going to go ten to one? Go
tend to one?
Speaker 1 (30:06):
Okay, now before I get the other predictions, Okay, I
get the predictions. I say it again, Folks, Brendan and
I are just making predictions here. Don't get upset. Hey,
your team could be number one and then you can
tell us you know. All right, so let's go to tenant.
All right, so let's start off with ten years tend
(30:31):
to Niagara Stocks. I don't think they're gonna get past ten.
I really don't reason why. I don't like the trade
they made with the Flint Firebirds. I don't like the
direction some of the trades that they've made. I do
like Jack Browdie. I think he's been in a fantastic,
fantastic addition to that team. I just don't think they
(30:55):
have it yet. Yeah, they got Waslyin. He's a great,
great young player, but they gave away fro Love and
I mean, I don't know. I just I have them
at ten. I do like their goaltending though. I like
Charlie Robertson. They gave him a chance at the end
of the year. He did well, right, I mean he
(31:16):
stonewall the steel Ads a couple of times too. It's
a pump, like fifty five shots on him to win,
as I remember. But I mean they got a young team.
I think they're still a year away though, I really do.
If they keep it together, I feel that they keep
it together and get a young core and keep a
young core together and grow together instead of trading everything.
In sight, I think they're gonna be fine. I really do. So.
(31:37):
I have them in ten, but nagra next year they're
gonna be good. In nine. I have the Sudbury Wolves
and the Sudbury Wolves and nine last year they went
for This year, Quentin Musty probably gonna come back, right
because they can't send him to the can't send him
to the AHL. He's not eligible yet in San Jose
(32:00):
draft pick. I mean, they do have over agers. Coach
of dollar Nick DeAngelis. They do have Donovan McCoy, they
do have Kieran Walton. After that, okay, they got Alex
farand after that not really much. They're goaltending very suspect
(32:21):
Nate Crawchuck. I think they're building to work twenty twenty
seven in Sudbury because apparently they're building a new arena
there that's supposed to be ready. So I think they're
going to build towards that, and I think they're going
to try to go for it then, so Sudbury's going
to take a step back. But yeah, so there's my
number ten, ninety ten to nine, all right, Number eight
(32:45):
Peterborough Pets get in this year. They get in young team,
really showed a lot of fight last year. They kept
it together. They got Kayden Taylor, they got nice goaltending
over there. They got Zach Bowen over there. I think
he's going to get a lot of playing time. I
like their team a lot. I like their team. They
might be the Steelheads of last year, so look out
for them. They might even move up from eight and whatever.
(33:06):
But they are a young, hungry team. I got them
in eight seven. I got North Bay, I got North
Bay in seven. Yes, they've lost a lot of players.
They've lost ty Nelson, They've lost oh my goodness, they've
lost a lot of tons of guys. Bill mannis just
to say a couple right. Manus was a huge part
of their team. They've been in the Eastern Conference Final
(33:27):
two years in a row, so they're probably going to
take a step back, obviously, But why I have them
in seven. They got a good young goaltender over there,
Mike mccire. This kid is unbelievable. He came in the
playoffs last year and shut down the Sudbury Wolves. Right,
Sudbury Wolves were pumping shots at this guy. Right. They
still have Romani. Romani's a good player. They still have Wakely, Okay.
(33:52):
But do I see them maybe trading off on Wakely, Yes,
I do. I think I think he is going to
be expendable at the trade deadline. So I have them
at seven. At six, I have the Ottawa sixty sevens okay,
And now he's still there, Henry Muse, great defenseman, and
(34:14):
now he's probably you know, he's most likely going to
be back with Ottawa this year. Good goaltending. They got McKenzie.
Call McKenzie over there, good goaltender, and I give it
to their coaching. And I say this about North Bay too.
You know Dave Cameron, Ryan wullihand a coach of North Bay.
But Dave Cameron great coach and he can get the
(34:34):
most out of his players. Right. They did get rid
of Brad Gardner. They're taking a step back this year.
You could totally see it. Right. They've lost Samuel by A.
They lost a couple other players as well, So I
can see them maybe in sixty. In fifth, I have
the Kingston frought Necks. Why hungry team, love their coach.
(34:57):
I love Troy Mann. All right, I'll keep it at that.
Now let's get to the big ones. Four to one.
I got Branford at four. Okay, I'll tell you why.
Speaker 2 (35:08):
Now.
Speaker 1 (35:08):
They got great forwards. Van acker lartis right, Jack guy
should be back from Montreal? Did it acquire Ryerson Leanders right?
And they've got a ton of room and they're draft
covered as well to make more moves. And but the
thing that and they got a good defenseman, Arn Prottz.
(35:29):
Owen Protz is absolutely phenomenal back there in defense. They
have Patrick Thomas as well. They got a good team
They've got a really, really solid team. But is their
defense gonna hold up? That's the thing. They're gonna have
to acquire another at least get another couple of defensemen.
And I'm pretty sure your check did commit to the
Branford Bulldogs, right, not your check, So that's huge. But
(35:51):
other than that, it's gonna be tough back there, and
that back then, they're gonna be playing a lot of guys.
So we'll see. But they have a great coach and
Jay McKee jamie probably one of the best coaches in
the OHL as well, and he gets the most out
of his guys. So I have them at four, number three,
the Barry Colts. I have done. What look up for
these Barry Colts, man, I'm telling you. They acquired Gardner, We'retucci,
(36:16):
they have well, uh, they have Aky in there, they
have gels month right, they got they got Hemming who
just came over from the Dallas Stars. That their import.
Who's gonna play? Uh? They they got a nice, nice team.
And I have another team that has a huge draft cover.
And how about the goaltending Sam Hillebrand.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
We know about him.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
We know about formergency emergency backup for the Steelers. So
I have them at three. I think great coaching as well,
Marty Williamson. I look, I think they're gonna be. They're
gonna be number three this year. That's my opinion. Number two.
Are you ready?
Speaker 2 (37:00):
I'm ready give it to me.
Speaker 1 (37:02):
Okay, Generals, Okay, now we talked about this before, but
I'm gonna talk about it.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
A great forwards.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
They got great forwards of course, man really really good forwards.
Row Brick if he if he comes back, Row Brick
might get an HL, he might get an HL contract rights.
He's an overager Seneca, Uh Danford? Where should I keep
going here? I mean they're loaded, right if they get
(37:33):
Kobe Barlow as well? Okay, fine, but again I go
back to the draft cupboard with the Austro generals. If
they acquire Barlow, which it's looking like they might, then
who are they gonna get. You're not gonna have much,
not gonna have much of that draft cupboard to do anymore.
Right to get their needs at the trade deadline whatever
(37:55):
it is, right, they could decide to go without a trade,
without a trade, and it happened in London nights last year.
They only they didn't have to, right, because they made
it was a thirteen year row and they didn't make
the trade the trade deadline. So I have them a
number two, and of course the number one. It's the
Brampton Steelheads. No, I'm not being biased, the number two
(38:15):
ranked team in the CHL top ten. I have them
at number one in the east. Lots of depth. Where
do we start? Carson Raycoff Port Martone, Angus mac Danell,
Luke Misa, it will be help me out here, Brendan,
I just keep me. I could just keep naming names
like crazy here.
Speaker 2 (38:36):
So Lucas Krmers on the back end talk about Finn
hard hanging guarding Spencer. Sovo just brought Rome to Solva.
Speaker 1 (38:46):
Let's see Parker von Richter, who's really coming into his own.
Stevie Lescavar has should be back from camp. And again
I looked at the draft cover and they have one.
They have one overached lot available and they can make
a couple of really really good moves. So there's my
one through ten. Man, let's see what happens. All right,
(39:08):
your turn, my friend.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
All right, I'll run through this a little bit quicker.
We don't have a ton of time and a lot
of the points that I'm gonna I'm gonna say too,
is is you've You've covered a lot of it. So
I'll run through my run through my no no, no,
no no, I'll run through my ten, ten through ten
through one. Okay, So we're gonna We're gonna have the
same at number ten for for a lot of the
(39:31):
points there. I think. I think the Ice Dogs are
still another year away. Like you said, a lot of
young players there, so I do believe that I do
believe that they can sort of get out of this
rut that they've been in. Like I think that it's
possible with the core that they have, with maybe a
couple more draft picks coming in there, a season from now,
I could see them being a playoff team a year
from now. You talk about the goaltending as well, that's
(39:52):
pretty strong too, so I could see that happening. But
for this year, I have them still in h in
tenth place. In ninth place, I am gonna go with
the North Bay Battalion. Actually, I think they're gonna talk
about falling off a little bit again. They made a
run for the past two years, being in the Eastern
(40:13):
Conference Final both years. Dallan Wakeley possibly being moved at
some point this year. I could see them being a
team that maybe gets off to a bit of a
slow start and then decides to deal some pieces off,
And that's why I think that they probably slipped down
into that spot. Peterborough for me, I like what you said.
I think that they kind of make a run back
into the playoffs this year. Really young team there, and
(40:36):
and I don't know if they're gonna be up to
the heights that maybe the stealers were a season ago
with the young players, but they put on a pretty
good performance at the end of the season last year.
So I like them in eighth place. Sudbury for me,
or sorry in in eighth place, Yeah, Sudbury for me
in seventh place. You talk about still the guys that
they have up front when you mentioned coach of Delik
(40:58):
and Alex for who you put in there? Why am
I forgetting the Caen player Kieran Walton? Thank you?
Speaker 1 (41:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
If there's there's a few more names up there on
offense that I think will be UH will be still
putting up some numbers enough in an offensively driven league
in the OHL for them to UH to still be
in the in the seventh. In the seventh spot, uh
for me, in the sixth spot, I have the Kingston
front Nacts. I don't know if there's a whole lot
(41:29):
to say here. I feel like Ottawa and them are
pretty interchangeable. I like their coach as well, Troy Man,
who took over halfway through last season. I think that
he's a guy that can definitely put something together here,
get the systems working a little bit better than maybe
we saw early on in the year last year. So
I can see them in sixth Ottawa. You talk about
Dave Cameron, and I just think anytime that he's behind
(41:50):
the bench, he's gonna get the most out of his players,
like you said, and he's gonna find a way to
keep them in relevancy and have them around the top
five of the of the conference. So I like Ottawa
at five and then number four. Let me find this here,
number four right now, I have the the Verry Colts.
I have the Verry Colts at number four. Yeah, so
(42:13):
a little little change from from what you were saying there,
but yeah, the very Colts at number four. Obviously, he
was a preseason game. We saw quite a quite a
bit of their of their team in Brampton when they played.
I do think they have a lot of good talent
up front. Sam Hill Lebrant, of course you talk about
him any time he plays the steal that's absolutely kills them.
So I do think there and fourth. For me, in
(42:35):
third place, I'm gonna say Oshawa, which kind of shows
you what I what I think about the top two
teams here. But it's so tough. I mean, they could,
they could really be anywhere in the mix, but I'm
just gonna go with I'm gonna go with having them
in the third spot. One thing though, that I that
I should say is and something that you didn't mention too,
(42:56):
is Jacob Oustric who absolutely turned it on right year.
Now as now as an overager as well, he's gonna
be even better than he was a season ago. So
for me, I could see them being in second or third,
but I'm gonna go with third and then either reason
I have Branford in the second spot. You mentioned all
(43:16):
what they have upfront when you talk about Mark van
Acker and having Jack Eye come back and all those names.
But just for me, the move to get Ryerson Leanders
is so huge for them to have one of the
best goalies in the league back there, and you talk, yeah,
maybe the defense might have a few holes in it,
but but I could see him kind of bailing out
(43:36):
some of those holes and making some of those holes
look a little bit smaller. And then Branford can make
some moves as well, like I think that they have
a lot of room to improve too. So I like
Branford at number two. And then we both have both
have the steelheads at number one. Yeah, Okay, it might
be some bias in there, of course, but we do
both have the steel heads at number one. I just
think with the talent they have and not even and
(43:59):
the young talent too, like a team that has been
together now for about their I guess last year the
first full season together. You have the half year before that,
but yeah, two and a half years together. Throw in
Ivan Covid, who I think is going to take a
big leap this year as as the number one goalie
getting the number one time in the net. And then
(44:19):
you talk about the defense. We've already discussed it when
you were talking about yours. But I just think that
there's discussing so much, so much depth from the seedlings,
which I think they have more of compared to other teams.
Like other teams, you look at the top, you know,
six guys top four defense, and they're all going to
have really really good top parts of their lineup. But
I just think the depth from the Steelheads is a
little more unmatched. I guess I could say for for
(44:43):
the other teams. So they're like it, like it a lot.
Speaker 1 (44:46):
I really really like your top ten, actually really really
like it. I like what you said about the depth.
I think the steel Heads have the most depth right now.
And that's that's key. I mean, that's key. But here's
my question about Jacob Oster. Okay, yeah, he won Goaltender
of the Year last year. Can he keep that up?
Can he keep that up? Though? We'll see, we'll find out. Yes,
(45:07):
he was amazing last year. Will we have that hangover
kind of thing, you know, Willie. We'll find out. Should
be interesting. I like all your picks, love all your
picks actually bang on, but I just I just don't
know about Sunbury. I just don't know. But we'll find out,
we'll find out. I like how you said that, Yeah,
(45:29):
I like how your picks man perfect, absolutely perfect, So
just keep it that all right? All right? So I
guess we'll go to break.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
No, no, no, no, no, we don't.
Speaker 1 (45:42):
Want to take a break. No. I'm just kidding around,
all right, Okay, So you know what when we talk
about depth with the Steelheads too, I mean, here's one
move that I like the acquisition of Jacob Gibbons to
be the backupender for Jack ivan Covid. Now, Jacob Gibbons
(46:04):
is probably going to get we hope that he can
get about ten twenty starts this year, and that'd be
good for Jack to get him a little bit of
a rest. But I liked the acquisition. He played well
in Erie last year when he was there.
Speaker 2 (46:17):
Yeah, yeah, I agree, I agree. I think again, when
you have it, when you have a young goaltender. Although
I do think it's going to be a big jump
for Ivan Covid and I think he's ready for it,
you're always going to need that a little bit of
insurance back there. And I think Jacob Gibbons early on
in the preseason was maybe just getting his feet wet
a little bit with the Steelheads, but I thought he
looked a lot better in kind of the second half
in that game against Barry. And we know goaltending coach
(46:39):
Chris Beckfords, who is a big proponent of Jacob Gibbons,
and he was kind of the one who sought him
out and said, this is the guy I want to
I want us to look at if we're going to
be moving on from one of our goalies. And yeah,
I think he's he's definitely going to be a big
piece for them, all right.
Speaker 1 (46:54):
So that's going to do it for episode six of
Troke Talk right here, Who's talk Saga nine sixty Yeah,
episode seven coming up, and the stupidest sport ever is
hot dog eating. Wrapping up with that, we're seeing for
episode seven. Everybody have a great, great eating
