Speaker 1 (00:16):
Welcome to trunk Talk right here on SAGA and I
sixty am your official podcast up the Branton steel Eggs.
My name is Mike Garrett lead us along with Brendan Lang.
We are both broadcasters up the Branton Steelheads, and we
have a great show lined up for you today. But
first of all, Brendan, my man, how are you doing?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
You know, I'm doing okay. We got uh, we got
baseball playoff starting and we were talking about that last episode.
It started up yesterday at the time recording this, so
so I've been locked in on that, looking uh, looking
forward to to going deeper in October and seeing what's
up with that. But besides that, though not much of course,
we got the steel Ed season underway, so we were
back at the rink, you know, felt good to be back, obviously,

(00:54):
felt good for you to probably get out on the
road again, get to Eerie for the first road game
of the year. Yeah, it's just kind of been kind
of been all systems go here with with the steel
that's getting underway and and working in the mornings and
all that stuff. So nothing too much new, of course,
other than the new season starting up.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Yeah, and uh, what what I mean the season just
starting up, as you said, and we had some games already.
Steelheads are two and oh to start this young season. Uh,
pretty impressive opening game against the Branford Bulldogs and that
was on Friday night. I guess we could first touch
on that first. I mean to me, it was an
absolute dominating performance from start to finish.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah it was. But also, what have you been up to?
We haven't got to that, like you can give me so.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Well you know, yeah, so yeah, i'd you know, it
was at the rink and then we had the what
the road trip in Yurie on Saturday, and then I
watched my pathetic team on Sunday lose again. Yeah. Yeah,
so we don't need to and no, I really don't
really want to go into not much of them and
stuff like that. So yeah, I know that's about it,

(02:02):
watching football and stuff. You know, played played my son
and whatnot, right, So you know, that's it's the life, man,
it's family life. So you'll get there one day, man, man,
you'll get there one day.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
One hundred percent. Can't wait to see see your son
get out to a game this year.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Well, yeah, he was.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
I know.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Every time every time you want to bring him. There's
always something that comes up, and.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Here's always something that comes up. Yeah, so I'm aiming.
I'm aiming for actually aiming. It's funny I say that
Amy for the October nineteenth game or something like that
against Saganaw and that's an afternoon game because he can't come.
So here's the thing with little guys, right, they can't
come like during the week and plus with school and
stuff like that, right, so it's got to be an
afternoon game with him. So yeah, so hopefully Saturday afternoon,

(02:41):
we'll see what happens there, right, Yeah. And so yeah,
that's about it, man, That's all what's going on with me.
But uh, let's get back to Let's get back to
that game on Friday night, opening game, inaugural game for
Brampton Steele Legs, first time they dropped the puck there
in the regular season since twenty thirteen, twenty fourteenth season.
And what game it was against Branford.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
What a game, you're you're right, the new fans in
Brampton were really treated to a good opener there. Seven
to nothing the final score in that one against Branford,
and I mean just an absolute blow up from start
to finish like I mean, I think it could have
been ten nothing if Ryerson Leanders didn't come up with
some pigs's, especially early on in the game. I thought

(03:22):
Ryerson Leanders and know he gave up seven goals, but
I thought he played pretty well, like he didn't get
a whole lot of help in front of him. I
mean a lot of those goals were goals that he
didn't really have much of a chance on. So early
on in the game the steel Edge dominated. Looked like
they scored early with Jack van Wolsen getting on the board.
They called that one back for offside, and then how
fitting Porter Marton gets the first goal of the season,
first goal in Brampton, obviously a big milestone for him,

(03:46):
a big year for him coming up in his in
his NHL draft season and just being named the captain,
so obviously a big year coming up for him, and
he gets things going, and really they just needed that
first one to get through and then everything just kind
of opened up after that. Looked like one of the
new guys in Carson gray Cuff, had a great game,
had multiple opportunities. And I talked to him after the
game and he said, you know, I felt like I

(04:07):
was around the net the whole game, just couldn't buy one.
And then he finally go and felling through there at
the second period. So yeah, I mean it was a
great game from start to finish. And I mentioned all
that on the offensive side. Didn't even mention Jack ivan
Covid who picks up the shutout as well. Yeah he
was great too.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yeah, he was a twenty one stage shutout on Friday.
He made the stage when he had to. He made
some big a couple of really big stomps right the
side of the goal. But yeah, he played a great
buddon You know what the big thing was to me?
There was seven different goal scorers and that on Friday,
and that tells me that's total team effort. And the

(04:44):
offense was clicking, the defense was really good. Just just
a great game on Friday, and the fans were treated
to a great game as you said so, and then
they moved on to Saturday against the year wee otters
and a huge, huge five to two win on the
road in front of those lunatic fans. I mean that
in a good way, because they're very passionate. That's why

(05:06):
I say that. And wow, yeah, five to two win.
So I mean you look at the weekend, Brendan, and
you start off on Friday, I mean Porter Martona goal
and three assists, Luke Misa goal and assist on Friday,
Carson Raycoff with one, Spencer Solva with one, Jack Van
Bolson to assist, Lucas Karmeiras two assists. I mean it
was just all over the place, right Aggleton scores, Sharrot

(05:28):
scores on Friday, and then, like I said, you think
we've touched on that on Friday and then it's Saturday.
How about Spencer Silva going back to in his old
bar and the great came on the back end two assists,
Carson ray Cooff a goal and assist, Luke Misa with
an assist, and Porter Martona and an assist, so two assists.
Excuse me? So you know what port of martone with

(05:49):
six points on the weekend, I don't believe? Pretty good?

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Huh for two games?

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah? And Jack ivan Covid with the goals against Avage
have one point zero zeros and he played absolutely ominal
I'm sorry, stopping everything in sight. I mean that's Samuel
Fannel was all over the place for Erie. I mean
him and Malcolm Spence were two man wrecking crew would
look like and boy, boy I was good.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Yeah, I mean obviously that's that's back to back games
to start the season that he was really good. And
I just mentioned there against Branford and then like he
said against Erie too, coming up with again you say
that he made the big saves when he had to, Like,
I mean, it just seemed like every time that Eerie
sort of got together a rally, it was it was
just stopped by by ivan Covic. And even when they
did come back to tie the game at two, I

(06:40):
mean still it just seemed like even after that, he
wouldn't let them get any further, made a couple of
big saves before the Steels were able to to retake
the lead and obviously ultimately hold onto it for the
for the duration of the game. But ivan Covic has
been great so far. Of course it's two games, but
I mean I think we expected that out of him
to start the season, obviously getting the number one job.

(07:00):
We just talked to him last, talked to him last
week and he said, you know, obviously he was really
excited for it and he was ready for it. Uh,
And he showed that a couple of the other names
you mentioned there sova a great start to the year.
And then one one guy who was on the team
of course last year too, Luke Misa, who was who
was drafted by Calgary this past year. I thought he
looked really good in the first game again, or the

(07:21):
first two games, I guess I should say against Bradford
and any ree. We always know the skating ability, but
he'd looked stronger with the puck this year. It looks like, yeah,
he looks like he kind of has a different gear
that he's getting into, uh this season. And I feel
like he really stood out to me in the in
the first game of the year for sure, and then
then just watching on the on the broadcast as well
in the second, but just being in the arena for

(07:42):
game one, I thought he really really stood out to
me as as a guy who's going to be a
difference maker this season. We know he got a massive
jump in points last year, and I could see even
a bigger jump coming this year. Just the way that
he started this season.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Yeah, he played very very well. But one one guy
on Saturday that really stuck out to me was Lucas
Karmiras all he seems to score the big goals, right,
and it was two two and the shotkeep in the
point didn't get through. I got blocked in front and
who was there? You know, like Lucas has now he's
biggerly stronger, and he has a sense now for the net,
more confident, got that rebound util he was just put

(08:15):
it in with these right, and that made it three
to two, said lucky made it four to two. And
then the good oh my goodness, oh yeah, I mean unbelievable.
The fans were called for a penalty and no they
you know, they called for everything in Eerie for a
penalty anytime there's a hit the same. But every time
there's a hit, there's something or a good hit, woo,

(08:37):
it's like, oh my gosh, it's a good hit. Come on.
But they're passionate fans. They are allowed to do that
their moneys. So but very impressive, very very very impressive wins.
So they just got to keep that up. And one
guy that's going to be coming back, who does have
to serve his three game suspension, who's going to be
Ben in the back end to Stevie Leskobar, so he's
going to help out a lot. And another thing, Brendan,

(08:58):
I want to touch on how because Luke Dregusika was hurt,
reed Gee steps in on back on defense and he
really played well back on defense those those two games.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Yeah, reed Gee played well in an Owen cart right too,
getting in there his first action in the OHL after
getting drafted this past year, and he looked really strong too.
And we talked about him a little bit after the preseason,
thought he looked good.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
But but you're right.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
I think Reid Gee a guy that they they paid
quite a bit to get last year and he came
over and you know, he was he was pretty good
last year, kind of in and out of the line up.
Him and Draguska were sort of switching in and out.
And obviously, with Draguska injury at the beginning, he gets
the start and there's gonna be competition all season long
on the back end and who's going to be playing.
So I think it's a really good start. Obviously unfortunate

(09:44):
for Luke Jerguska to be hurt to start the year,
but you know, those injuries are going to pop up
during the season and the next man up has to
be able to come in there and fill the role well.
At REDGI one hundred percent did that in those games.
And then you say, too, leskov are going to be
back as well, So then you're gonna have you know,
Leskovar is going to be in there, another guy is
going to be moving down in the in the lineup

(10:04):
a little bit, and then you're really going to have
a strong, strong defensive core. They look strong in the
first two games. They're going to get even stronger here
in a couple of games, I guess one game. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
And the depth, now, the depth is absolutely phenomenal back there.
I mean, what do you do? I mean, look, you
got Drake Garusica, you got Gee, now you've got Leskovar
come back after three games. Owen Cartwright's look like a
veteran back there. As you said, he looked just calm cool.
Collected those two games. He really really really played well.
But and jack Vin Wols has been really playing well.

(10:38):
He's but he had a good first couple of games, uh,
I thought for the steel Heads.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Yeah, he's got a lot to prove this year as well.
I mean, going through the draft, he wasn't picked this
year in his in his first draft year, and and
he's got a lot to prove he went to a
Columbus Blue Jackets camp. I believe it was uh got
a little opportunity there was sent back to to Brampton.
And I mean again like this is a season for
him where he's going into his second sort of draft here.
He'll be back in the draft this year, and if

(11:04):
any the first two games or any indication, I think
teams will probably taken notice for sure of those first
two games. We always talk about Jack Finvils. We had
him on the show last year, of course, and you
can tell he's really intelligent about the game and he
really understands the way it works. And I thought that
that was pretty apparent when we talked to him a
season ago and whenever we see him around the rink.

(11:25):
But just maybe getting a little more of that physical
edge to him, I think is part of the game
that James Richmond wants to see and I thought I
saw that in the first two games as well. I
think he was, you know, in there a little more
often kind of in the mix, and the numbers stand
out for him as well, and showing that he has
made an adjustment going into this year.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Yeah, it seems like everybody's been really physical lately. And
you know, interviewing James Richmond on Saturday. He told us
on Friday too, he said, you know what he goes,
I want all four lines to go up there and
play pissed off. He said that the interview and play
pissed off, right, And don't you know if you make
a mistake, so what come back and get it back
kind of thing. Right, So it's a different mindset this year.

(12:03):
It's it's more obviously it's win now and we all
know that, right, So, but you could totally see it
by the physicality as supposed to Jack van Woltson. But
album McGregor Richmond getting his first goal as well on Saturday, Huh,
nice little snipe got it by Earlin in there the
Swish sport. It was.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
It was a good it was a good goal. It
was a great goal. And we again it goes back
to the depth that you talked a bit earlier on
in the in the episode, and I talked to h
to Rakeoff about at the end of the game on
on Friday night, just like you said, seven different goal
scorers in the first game. Uh, it just speaks to
how strong the death of this team is. And we
talked about that when we were doing our rankings, just

(12:41):
saying why we think they are near the top or
at the top is because of the depth that they possess,
not only forwards, but the defense as well. So that
obviously points to that in McGregor Richmond getting out their
fourth line center. You know, he does a lot of
good things, whether it's face offs, whether he's playing in
the defensive zone, and then to get a little bit
of offensive output from as well as just an added bonus,

(13:02):
and you know, good to get things started off on
the right foot for him this season.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
Yeah, you bet. How about in a nice little pass
from from the back of the net from Bacol It
really seeing the plans now, I mean, it was a
great pass to Richmond in front. And it's again we're
going to talk about the coolick probably more and more
when the year as the year progresses, but I think
we're going to talk about it more because he's getting
more and more comfortable with the game, especially the North

(13:28):
American games. So it was good to see him have
a nice game as well.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
So it was it was and there's always going to
be an adjustment period with impoor players, especially when they're
young too. James Richmond saying, you know, he's going into his.

Speaker 1 (13:40):
Draft year this year.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
It's not like he's a he's an older guy. He's
still seventeen years old, you know, coming in here and
getting the opportunity to play. Didn't play in the first game,
gets in there in the second game, and yeah, I
thought he looked really good. I was. I liked how
he looked in the preseason. And you can see the
skill sets there for sure. When he gets an opportunity
to play and he gets more comfortable playing the small
ice and just you know, more comfortable not just in hockey,

(14:03):
but just you know, in life. Coming over from a
different Yeah, as as a teenager's pretty difficult. So getting
adjusted to everything around here. I agree with you. I
think we're gonna be saying his name quite a bit
throughout this season.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
Yeah, it was kind of funny. I'll tell you a
funny story. So they had a fan fest actually on
Saturday in Eerie. So we drove by the fan fest, right,
and this is how passionate the fans are, you know,
A couple of them flipped us the bird and all
that kind of stuff when we're driving by. I thought
it was pretty funny right, yeah, wow cool so but

(14:37):
that's how passionate they are over there, those fans, I
tell you that. So we'll talk to our guests about
that when he comes on, Angus macdonel so, and that
will be our guests. So looking forward to chatting with him.
And we'll take a break and we come back. We'll
have Angus MacDonell. You're listening to trout talk right here
in Saga ninety sixty A. Welcome back to trut Talk

(14:59):
right here in news Talk Saga nine sixty Am. Mike
care for leave us along with Brendan Lang, both broadcasters
of the Brampton Steel Ends, and we'd like.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
To welcome in the assistant Captain Angus mac donell, the Goose.
And yes, and he is right there, it says the goose,
right on the side of the screen.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
All right, how you doing, goose? Thanks for joining.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
Us, good Mikey, thanks for having me absolutely so.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Hey, great weekend, two wins talk about Let's first talk
about Friday night, the inaugural game and Brampton. A man,
I thought that four lines were clicking. You were clicking.
My gosh, your beard, you look so different, you look
so old of it. Anyway, I just want to say
that you're not a totally different person. But talk about
Friday Night, the inaugural game of Brampton. Talk about your feelings.

Speaker 5 (15:47):
Yeah, I think it was an awesome game to start
out the year. We had a ton of energy. Everyone
was super excited for that game. We were lucky to
have a full lineup. We knew Branford was missing a
couple of guys would be a big game for us
to take advantage of them, and I think we just
came out firing and all cylinders and all together, all
four lines were rolling. We had seven different goal scorers

(16:10):
in the game, which I thought showed how much depth
we have on this team, and so I think Evan
was just super excited to get going and it was
an awesome first game for us in Brampton.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Yeah. I talked to Carson Raykoff after the game had
asked him about that, just the depth. I mean, you
get seven goals from from seven different players, Like, how
important is that going to be for the length of
the season, Just to have, you know, all those guys
being able to produce on the offensive side of the puck.

Speaker 5 (16:33):
I think that's definitely gonna be huge for our team,
We're gonna have nights where our top line or top
two lines are gonna gonna score two or three, but
there are other nights where we're gonna need depth pieces
to step up and get us goals.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
And you saw that in that first game.

Speaker 5 (16:48):
How crucial it's going to be for us to have
scoring from all four lines and then the defensive defensive
what as well. Having those guys step up is going
to be huge for us this year.

Speaker 1 (16:59):
Goose in Dallas camp again. Talk about the experience. Yeah,
talk about Dallas camp this year this time.

Speaker 5 (17:07):
Yeah, it was kind of nice this year going in.
I knew everyone, a lot of the staff and a
lot of the guys, so it made it a lot
easier for me to transition there. We had a little
two game series against Detroit and Traverse City, which is
always an awesome time. They sell out the barn there,
so it's pretty cool to throw on the Stars jersey

(17:27):
for that and get that entire experience, and then we
flew to Dallas for the training camp there, which it
was an absolute grind there. They push you to the
limits every day, and I think it was just great
to gain that experience and then come back here. We
had a ton of guys at NHL camp, so I
think everyone brought a little something back to the team

(17:48):
this year.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
And were you acquainted with the former Steelhead Thomas Harley
while you were down there?

Speaker 5 (17:53):
Yeah, he was still working out his contract. He was
negotiating his contract, but he ended up coming down a
little late, but I was talking with him a little
bit about about his contract and then the Steelheads as well.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
Goes, is this the best line you've ever played on
right now with portermartone and Carson Raycoff in your career?

Speaker 3 (18:13):
Oh, definitely in the HL best line I've ever played on.

Speaker 5 (18:16):
You see the amount of skill those guys have, and
you've seen Carson scored whatever it was, fifty two goals
last year. So I think it's gonna be awesome for
me just playing with those guys and feeding off their skill.
I think I'm able to open up a lot of
ice for those guys so they can make plays, and
if we keep rolling, I think we could have an

(18:37):
unbelievable line this year.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
And you talk about playing with those guys coming into
this season, what's kind of for you, like, like, what's
the goal?

Speaker 1 (18:44):
Is it?

Speaker 2 (18:45):
Just win? Are there any like, you know stats that
you want to put up, Like, what is the goal
specifically for you coming into this year.

Speaker 5 (18:51):
Yeah, for me, this year is winning and that's the
biggest thing for me is I want to be on
a championship team and I think that that is of
the best interest for me. And if I want to
sign a contract, they want uh players that can play
in big moments and can win championships. So that's been
the main focus for not only me, but I think

(19:11):
the whole team. Obviously, everyone has their little goals for
for point wise and all that, but I'd say that
the biggest one for me would be just winning a
championship and playing on a winning team this year.

Speaker 1 (19:24):
Let's talk about that game and aria hostile fans, hostile everything,
hostile broadcasters. No, I'm just well, I mean some of
the people in front of me, the news reporters are
actually pretty funny. But talk about that game, talk about
the atmosphere and just just and the win. How much
of a big win that was.

Speaker 5 (19:43):
I think that was big for us to play in
an environment like that, and they gave us a little run.
It was two to one for most of that game.
It's good where it's good to play in those games.
It's going to teach us how to win and win
tight games, how to close out games in crucial environments
and places like that where it's hard to play. I
think it was awesome for us to stick together there
in the third period and ended up winning five to two,

(20:05):
but it was more like a two to one, three
to two.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Game that whole game.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
Too.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
Yeah, my brother was fortunate enough he brought down his
whole lacrosse team. So they they were telling me they
were pretty rowdy, they were getting into it with some
of their fans. So just to have that, just to
have that support, it was awesome.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
So you say he was down there with his lacrosse team.
The last time we talked to you at a media day,
you said that you actually went back and played a
junior A lacrosse this year and you were drafted to
the NLL by the Buffalo band. It's what made you
first of all, made you want to go back and
play lacrosse again this offseason, and then how did you
find out you were drafted?

Speaker 1 (20:42):
What was that like?

Speaker 5 (20:44):
I think the main thing for me going back to
playing lacrosse is I found over the past couple of
years I had him played in the summer and I
was losing a bit of foot speed on the ice,
and I think that was the big thing for me,
was gaining that foot speed back and even just staying
in shape through a the summer. It's unbelievable for that.
But the main thing would be just a lot of

(21:05):
running a lot of short sprints. I think will help
me a ton this year with just short skates and
taking people out wide, and that was the main thing
for me. And then the draft, I was actually in
my hotel room in Dallas. I was keeping tools on it.
I didn't really know what was going on, to be honest,

(21:27):
but I ended up I got a couple of calls
from some teams and they were just asking me like,
what's your situation, Like are you going to be coming
to camp or what's it like. I was like, not really,
my priorities hockey right now, but maybe in the future
if things don't work out. But I told them all
that hockey was my main priority and that's what I
was going to be focusing on this year, and a

(21:49):
lot of teams were just like, oh, thanks, I appreciate
you being honest with us. And then I didn't talk
to Buffalo and they picked me and I didn't know.
And one of my buddies gave me a call. He's like,
you got drafted and I was like, no, no, I didn't.

Speaker 3 (22:02):
You just got drafted. And I was said, we'll checked
on my phone.

Speaker 5 (22:06):
And then John Tavares, the lacrosse player, he's one of
the greatest lacrosse players ever, he gave me a call,
which was pretty cool, and that was about it.

Speaker 2 (22:16):
I'm gonna say, I'm gonna wager to bet you're probably
the only steal had to be drafted in two pro leagues,
so that's that's pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (22:23):
Yeah. Yeah, you're like Deon Sanders. Now you got too
sports you can you're gonna fly over to Buffalo. Then
you're gonna fly over to to Mississauga or to St. Ma,
take a place. You get the propeller planes, right, yeah,
go to Buffalo. Thank congratulations for that. That's amazing. But uh,

(22:44):
let's talk about you know what, we don't talk about
the games coming up this week, Goose Big Ones. You know,
got Barry Colts coming up. You've got the London Nights
of course that's huge, and Sunday against egg Gristalks but
first let's talk about the Barry Colts huge rivalry. Of course,
that's I mean, you guys got to be pumped. How's
practice going with that?

Speaker 5 (23:05):
Yeah, we've We've had some pretty intense practices leading up
to this weekend.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
We know Barry what they're gonna bring.

Speaker 5 (23:13):
We've played against them enough the past couple of years,
so it's always a close.

Speaker 3 (23:17):
Game with them.

Speaker 5 (23:17):
It's just gonna depend on who who wants to compete
harder and who wants to win that game. And then London,
who's ranked number two in the OHL. So that's I
think that's gonna be a big test for us. Uh,
they're getting a lot of their guys back from NHL
camp right now, so they should be coming in with
a full roster, which will be another big game for us.
And then even Niagara they started, they have two wins already,

(23:39):
so I think they're gonna be a little bit of
a different team this year, which is definitely gonna push us,
unlike previous years where they they haven't had the greatest team.

Speaker 3 (23:47):
So I think in that game, it's gonna be a.

Speaker 5 (23:50):
Lot about us dialing in for that one because we're
not used to them having a great team, so we
can't think that we're just gonna roll right over them.
But I think if we come to play each and
every night of those games, then we'll have a great
chance at winning.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
And with the London game coming up, of course that
one at home in Brampton. You get the first game
in Brampton out of the way against the Branford Bullocks,
first game of the year. We've We've done a lot
of talking on here about you know, what the move
has been like and everything kind of off the ice,
but you get your first taste of it on the ice.
So how did you like the atmosphere and was it,
you know, different from Mississauga? Just how did that feel?

Speaker 3 (24:23):
Yeah, I think it was great.

Speaker 5 (24:24):
We had a great little tailgate before with lots of
the fans there, and I think even the environment was
great after we scored it was it was super.

Speaker 3 (24:32):
Loud in there.

Speaker 5 (24:33):
And then also just the fans like the building. It
feels like the fans are more on top of you,
is one thing we found. So you're definitely hearing the
fans more. They're getting more into it, and I think
if we have a great team this year, the fans
are going to keep coming up and there's gonna be
more and more every night. So I think that's one
thing we're super excited for, is just building the fan
base from the bottom up, and I think we can

(24:54):
do that by having a winning and successful year.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
It was what did you work on the most in
the off sea?

Speaker 5 (25:02):
I think the biggest thing for me was working on
my foot speed, and then I work out at Matt
Nickel in the summers with a lot of the pro guys.
So I think just each and every day working on
little things that's gonna make me stronger. It's gonna make
me harder to push off pucks.

Speaker 3 (25:20):
So at the pro.

Speaker 5 (25:22):
Level, it's a whole different ballgame. So I think just
building for that was my main focus this summer.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
And you talk about kind of the the off season regiment,
what does that look like maybe kind of more off
the ice in the gym sort of thing. What does
what does the workout routine look like?

Speaker 5 (25:37):
Yeah, so we're in the gym. We usually go in
at around eight o'clock eight am. We do a little
pre ice workout to get us prepped for the ice,
which is mostly like a little mobility with bands and
stuff just to get us warm for the ice and
then we'll go on the ice for an hour and
a bit and then we'll come back to the gym

(25:59):
and do our real lift. Every day is kind of different. Uh,
they have us on a pretty strict program. There, a
lot of a lot of biking, a lot of speed
work just with the It's not all about lifting the
heaviest weights.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
It's more about your like working on.

Speaker 5 (26:16):
Your posture and uh being able to push weight quick,
which is I think one of the biggest things for hockey.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
We talk about Texas, talk about Dallas, would you do
you know, talk about the city. You know, a lot
of rodeos down there. Did you learn how did you
learn how to line dance? You know anything like that?

Speaker 5 (26:33):
You know, like talk about that, you know, yeah, talk
about we can get to any rodeos or get out
for any line dances. But uh, the Blue Jays were
in town when we were there, so we got to
go see their their new stadium down there in Texas,
which is pretty awesome, all brand new. So we went
to the Jays Rangers game down there when I was

(26:55):
down there just for development camp. We got a tour
of the Cowboys facilities, so just see the facility that
they have is just incredible. So they keep us busy
down there every day we're doing something, if it's we're
going into the community for community service work or anything

(27:16):
along those lines. They like to keep us invested in
the community, which I think is awesome for for a
place like Dallas.

Speaker 3 (27:24):
Down there, you.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
Say you got out to the new stadium, did you
try any of the food there? I know they got
some some crazy.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
Stuff down there.

Speaker 5 (27:34):
We had a couple a couple of pregame meal steaks,
but not at the ballgame. We didn't try anything too crazy.
Got little ice cream hot dog and some pop. But
we saw people walking around with the old six foot
long hot.

Speaker 1 (27:47):
Dogs that they have down there.

Speaker 3 (27:49):
So they're carrying they're carrying the hot dog like a
perse around.

Speaker 1 (27:53):
And they put like everything on it, right.

Speaker 3 (27:56):
Yeah, it's loaded.

Speaker 5 (27:57):
You get the loaded ones with the chili and whatever
whatever you want on it.

Speaker 3 (28:01):
And everything's bigger down there, so, oh.

Speaker 1 (28:04):
Yeah, bigger than you said that. You know the hair,
you see the hair, like the women's hair. It's always
like this in Dallas, right, yeah, like close to the dog.
I think that's the thing. All right, Goose, You know
what I want to thank you? So much for joining us.
We know this was last minute, so much appreciated, and
uh we're gonna have you on again of course, you know.

(28:26):
And good luck this season and uh good good luck
this season, good luck this weekend right for me. So
that's all I have to say. Yeah, all right, very much.

Speaker 3 (28:35):
Yeah, thanks, you see on the weekends.

Speaker 1 (28:37):
All right.

Speaker 2 (28:37):
Thanks, ye have a good one, all right.

Speaker 1 (28:40):
So that was Angus MacDonell, new assistant captain, well no,
new assistant captainlet' say say, captain of the Brampton steel EDGs.
And we come back. We will break down that interview
with Tegus mac noel. You're listening to trout Talk right here,
News Talk Saga nine sixty am. Well about the trout
Talk right here at News Talk Saga nine sixty am.
Mike Carefull lead us along with Brendan Lang. We are

(29:00):
the official podcast of the Brandon Steelheads. And we just
talked to assistant Captain Angus MacDonell. And the first thing
that impressed me, Brendan, how much for pro he is?

Speaker 2 (29:12):
Yeah, you're right, yeah, yeah, yeah, all good. Yeah, yeah,
definitely a fro. You're right. I mean I feel like
we say that a lot about the guys that we
talked to on this on this podcast, and and you
said it there at the end. You know, it was
kind of last minute. He just jumped on here, said
he would come on and he and he obviously did great.
So yeah, great to talk to to Goose. I like

(29:33):
that he wrote that on this Goose good good nickname.
You know what I'll say, hockey nicknames usually aren't very good.
I'm gonna throw that out there, but but that one's
that one's a pretty strong nickname. Anyways. Besides that, yes,
a pro for sure, and I think Dallas definitely got
a good one in uh In Angus MacDonell. Of course,
going out there and getting the opportunity to, you know,

(29:54):
go out to camp and get to say that for
quite a few players this year. But now his second
time getting to be an NHL camp, you know, I
think kind of the second time you do anything, it's
just gonna be a lot easier. So he gets that
experience last year, goes in this year. He kind of
knows what to expect, he said it to you know,
he has a he knows the staff better, he knows
some of the players better, so he's just going to
be more comfortable and you know going in there this

(30:15):
year is so obviously big for him and it's big
for his development to be able to go to pro
camp and and get that opportunity.

Speaker 1 (30:21):
Yeah, how about that too, been drafted by the Buffalo
Bands as well, and that how you know, he didn't
even know, and you know I pressed me. He said,
you know what a concentrate on hockey right now and
this and uh yeah, so that's there, you go right there.
So I was just thinking, that's why I said, Deion
Sanders are gonna fly from here to c. Saint Marie
here with propellers. Who knows, right, But he just said

(30:41):
but yeah, he said, he's contra in hockey this year
and this team's inn win now mode. And he's a
big part of this team. Man. He is the raw,
raw guy. He's a leader, he's a pure leader. So
he's gonna have a big year. He's desert for a
big year.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
Yeah. A big theme on the team. Everybody that we've
talked to has just said, you know, it's winning. Winning
is the biggest thing, and that was something that he
echoed as well. Of course, he's a big part of
the leadership group on this on this team, and I think, obviously,
when you have a guy like him who's in that
leadership group, who's just kind of echoing that sentiment that
it's all about winning. Of course you're gonna have personal goals,
and he alluded to that a little bit, but it

(31:17):
is mostly about winning and when you win, when you
play in those big games, it's gonna help you personally
as well. So obviously it's a it's they're in win
now mode and they got off to a good start.

Speaker 1 (31:27):
Great start, all right, So let's move on. Let's see
up the games coming up Brendan, Barry Colts coming up,
the London Nights, and the Niagara Ice Dogs, which is
coming up right after trou talk right here in Saga
I sixty am, I'll have to call for you from well, Niagra.
I'm gonna I'm gonna disappear from here and be a nagre.
So but yeah, so you'll hear me on the side

(31:51):
of the hour. Anyway, besides that, let's you have to
give Brendan. Let's talk about Barry. Tide about Barry first.
That's gonna be a tough one. Cole Wood wins back
from Utah as well. Uh, they got it. They got
a really, really nice team. Bow Ake's back as well,
he's back from Edmonton. A couple of guys that are
out of their lineup, Bull Jalsman's out of their lineup

(32:11):
and Ryley Patterson's out of their lineup. Dalsman's out with
an injury and Patterson out with an injury. Still tough
place to play, Always been a tough place to play
for Missaga and Sam Hillo Brandon.

Speaker 2 (32:21):
That that's the guy right there, that is the super
villain of the Brampton Steelheads is Sam Hilo brand and
mister Steelheads. Last year, he was amazing anytime they played.
I always said that a bunch of times, whether it
be on the broadcast or on here. But uh but yeah,
I mean he he came and stole the show. I mean,

(32:42):
of course he was part of the Steelers organization at
one time. Goes over there at Barry and he's been great.
He was actually he was part of the World Junior team,
the US team last year too, So he's got some
he's got some great experience and he's one of the
top goalies in the league. So you you combine that
with a really strong team in Barry and like you said,
a tough place to play for the steel at It'll
it'll be a fight on uh on Thursday night, and

(33:03):
one that I think I'm really looking forward to. And
it's it's kind of a rivalry as well. I think
there's a I think there's a rivalry and these two
teams playing each other too.

Speaker 1 (33:10):
Yeah, there is definitely. I mean, this is a team
that's trying to load up as well. They picked up
Brad Gardner, they picked up drifted Bertucci on the back
of that was a huge picking up a Tristan Bertucci,
Emil Heming, guy that committed Dallas, star of draft picked
as well. Who's gonna play up front? But this is
a yeah, this is a team probably that probably is
going to add at the trade deadline. Well maybe we'll

(33:30):
it depends how they how they're doing. They're one in
one right now, but always a tough one, all right.
So let's move on, of course, Saturday against the London Nights,
they say, And my goodness, yeah, so let's talk about
London Knights.

Speaker 2 (33:45):
Yeah, of course, yeah, man, it's it's gonna be a
good game. At the time of this airing, it's gonna
have happened already. So we'll know how good of a
game it was. But but no looking forward to it.
It's a it's gonna be a good one. I mean
we always always say that when you see these two
teams face off, and just anytime you're playing against the
London Knights, you know it's going to be it's gonna

(34:06):
be a game. Angus said there that you know, all
the players for the roster for London are going to
be back. We'll see if if Easton Cowen is back.
I know we were talking before about two guys from
their team as well, and Halton and gazes Off who
are going to be back. So maybe a little bit
less of what they have on the top end of
that roster, but it doesn't really matter. I mean, the

(34:26):
London Knights are always going to be a great team
and a tough team to play against. You know, the
Hundred Brothers put together a tough team every year, so
it'll it'll be a physical one and and I would
expect there to be some goals scored in that game.
Let's just say that.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
Definitely if they just got back tickets in and O'Reilly
too for any camps, right, so if they get Cowen
back by that time and as we said, this game,
that game will be done by the time this is
done kind of thing. Whatever. But yeah, well what a
matchup that's going to be. And wow yeah wow, So yeah,
I think it's go I think that game might come
down to goaltending though we'll see Omar Gainst most likely.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
Yeah, and that's another thing too, We'll we'll see I'm
sure a Jacob Gibbons in one of these three games
this uh this week. I think we probably see Gibbons
get into one of them. Ivan Covid got the first
two games in the back to back. I think, you know,
you'll probably see Ivan Covid against London. I would think
he probably plays against Barry too. Maybe we see Jacob
Gibbons in the game that's coming up after this against
the Niagara Ice Dogs. So we'll see how that all

(35:28):
shakes out. But you're right, it'll be it'll be a
goaltending battle. Like I said, I feel like there's there's
gonna be a lot of offense between the steel Ands
and the and the and the Knights, so it will
come down to goaltending for sure, and just who can
you know, keep that one last puck out of their net?
I feel like it's going to be that kind of game.

Speaker 1 (35:43):
What's the heat of beating Barry?

Speaker 2 (35:45):
You think that's a tough one. I think again, I
think I think energy early on in the game is
such a big thing when you go to play the
Barry Cools because because you said how difficult it is
to play there, and if you get off to a
slow start, it's just really really difficult to be able
to come back against that team, especially with Hill and
Brandon net that we talked about. So I think getting

(36:07):
off to a fast start, really bringing physicality, energy early
on in the game, which I think James Richmond, you know,
preaches all the time. I feel like that's kind of
a big key for them to win that game.

Speaker 1 (36:17):
Yeah, they got to be physical because you know, Barry's
gonna come out physical. They always do, and they built
this team around physicality. And then Marty Williamson's a heck
of a coach over there, head coaches, Yeah right, I
mean he's He's a legend as far as I'm concerned.
So that's gonna be a tough one. So if they
come out physical to steal it, then they got to
score first. I think the first goal is key against

(36:37):
the Barry Colts score first, and I think they're gonna
be okay. They should be okay, So we'll see what
kind of intensity to come out with. But Angus MacDonell
said it, we know what these guys are about. We
had a hard week. We have. We had a hard
practice is getting ready for these guys. So and you
know James Richmond's practices, they're tough, they're not easy, so.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
That's for sure, right. Yeah, So yeah.

Speaker 1 (37:00):
That should be a really good one. But in London,
London should be really good as well. But what's the
key to London? What it's the key to being London? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (37:08):
Again, I feel like it goes to the goaltending. I
feel like that's kind of the biggest thing in it. Yeah,
and we talked about the offense and how potent both
of them are, maybe not just the goaltending, but just
the defense of play as a whole. I feel like
is a big piece to beating the London Knights, just
because of how much firepower they have upfront, even with
maybe some of them, some of their top guys not
being there, still a ton of firepower up front. So

(37:30):
you look, that'll be the first game Stevie Leskovar will
be back in the lineup four, so that's huge to
get him back. Spencer Silva obviously has gotten off to
a great start. Harding and Parker von Richter have looked
really strong. Fibiger as well in there. I really like
the defense course, so I feel like that's kind of
the biggest thing going into the game against London.

Speaker 1 (37:48):
Totally agree. The defense is going to really have to
be good, especially with those breakouts because you know London's
going to come up with a hard four chat. Right
if you got the defense, Bond Richter, Harding and company,
they're going to have to get that puck up quick
and get chances back there. We're going Willmore. Last year,
I remember when these two teams met. This the first
of two meetings between these two teams, but and they
split the meetings last year one to one. But yeah,

(38:10):
they're gonna have to get They're gonna have to get
that puck up really quick, get lots of shots on Willmore.
And again they should be okay. I think they should
be okay, But we'll see. If Easton Cowen is gonna
be in the lineup, that's gonna be interesting.

Speaker 2 (38:23):
So yeah, yeah, that'll be big. And then and then
after that, of course we have the Ice Dogs game,
and that's coming up right after here on on Saga
nine sixty am and and like Haga said, there too,
it's there. It's either two and oh to start the year. Like,
I don't think Niagara is gonna be the the pushover
team that maybe we saw in the past. So I mean,
I'm not saying they're gonna be great, they're gonna make

(38:45):
the playoffs, but I just they will be better than
I think they have been in the past two years.
So you have to be able to go to go
into that game, especially playing in Niagara, you know, not
always an easy place to play. They got some good
fans out there, so yeah, I think that game too
will should be a good one. And we saw them
beat Ottawa early on in the year Kingston I believe
they beat as well to start this season, so uh,

(39:06):
you know, I think that they will be more of
a threat this year. I mean, we saw years in
the past where it looked like the Ice Dog's barely
touched the Steel as end. I mean, I don't think
that's gonna be the case going into the There's gonna
be a little more fight to those games. So again,
and James Frischman, I know he says that too, but
he can't just go into those games and think, and
it's gonna be point night for me. I'm gonna go

(39:28):
and we're gonna get three goals and we're gonna win
by ten. It's just it's not gonna happen. You gotta
go in there and play this, play the game the
right way exactly.

Speaker 1 (39:34):
And you know what, they gotta watch guys like Kevin Heat.
You gotta gotta you gotta watch Kevin Heat. You gotta
watch Robrick, young Ryan Rodbrick out there. You gotta watch
wastle it rookie. He's looked really good so far. Owen Flores.
He stopped over fifty against the Ottawa. Yeah, I mean
he's over ager. I'm not sure if the Steelers are
gonna see him though. For some reason, I have a feeling,
Charlie Robertson, for some reason, it's going to be in

(39:55):
that against the Steelers too. So for some reason, always
plays well against the Steeah, he does well. You do
that even when he was at North Bay. But yes, Brennan,
I totally agree with you this is not the same
Nagara team. Uh. They picked up Jack Browdy Brody as
well from Barry Blair Scott back there, so their defense
is a little bit different. I still think there might

(40:16):
be in the honeymoon phase, That's what I'm gonna call
it right now. Being two and O, I do expect
the steel has to come out hard in that game
and maybe Jacob Gibbons to get to start in that
one as well. So that's what I expect.

Speaker 2 (40:28):
Yeah, yeah, I'm with you on the on the Jacob
Gibbs front. I think we probably see him in that
in that game as well. Get him an opportunity and there.
We saw him the preseason a bit, but I know
that the coaching staff really likes him, and we know
Chris Beckford too, the goaltending coach for the Steelheads, kind
of sought him out and then wanted him on the rosters.
So I'm excited to see him get into a game.
I mean, I don't know if it'll be that game

(40:49):
for sure, but we'll see him here in the not
too distant future for sure.

Speaker 1 (40:53):
Yeah, we'll see just on the other side of the
break here. So we are after trout talk here, but
Brendan life tips, My man, let's let's talk about life
tips and you got anything that's going on? You know,
what do you want to share with the people that
you'd like to know about life? Is?

Speaker 2 (41:14):
Like, man, I don't know. That's putting me on the spot.
I'm not not too great with these ones. Usually are
usually this is your second Yeah, but yeah, no, I
don't have anything for.

Speaker 1 (41:28):
You right now, like you oh all right, Wow, I
don't know, nothing's really you know, just be nice, be
kind out there, like.

Speaker 2 (41:39):
I'm with you. I'm with you for sure.

Speaker 1 (41:42):
But anyways, big games coming up for the Trout. Wow,
big month, big month coming up for the Trout. Big,
big month, and every game is huge. So yeah, they
really really need to at least I'm gonna say, Brendan
to at least two or of three out of these games.

Speaker 2 (42:00):
Yeah. I mean, I feel like anytime you go into
three games stretch, if you're winning two out of three here,
you're looking pretty good. So I think that every time
you go into a kind of a weekend, I think
that's kind of the goal. And obviously going forward, hopefully
you get three or three, but definitely you're right win
two to three and you're looking like you're in a
good spot.

Speaker 1 (42:18):
You got it all right. On that note, we're gonna
wrap it up here on trut Talk, right here at
Goose Talk Saga nine sixty and the official broadcast of
the Brampton Steelers. So for Brendon Lang, I'm might here.
Peliti's Day two coming up after the break. It's the
steel Ads on the road to take on the nag
Rice Dogs at the Meridian Center. Take care, everybody, and
we'll see it right after the breaking.
