Speaker 1 (00:17):
Hello, and welcome to trout Talk here on SAGA nine
sixty am. I'm Brandan Lang alongside mikey Kay, Mike Caravlidas too,
broadcasters for the Brampton Steelheads on SOGA nine sixty. Thank
you for coming along here on this Sunday afternoon, or
if you're watching on YouTube wherever you get your podcast.
Thanks for coming along, Thanks for watching, Thanks for listening today.
We got a good show for you today, got some

(00:39):
topics to cover. Good guest. Of course. In the middle,
we'll have Yaco Fibiger on the show today, so you'll
be hearing from him in a moment, the Brampton Steelheads defenseman,
and we'll get into their recent games. Lot going on
in the past week for the Steelheads, so we can
talk about that before we get going though, Mikey, how
are you doing. How's how's the week been treating you?

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Good? Good? Week's been good. You know, every day is
always a new day. It's like Groundhog Day. I always
say that, right, but you know, back at the arena.
Good to be back at arena for a good win
against the London Nights and a very very well you
know one of those games. I guess you could say
against the Negrice Doug's on the road, but can't win

(01:20):
them all. That's where I look at it. But the
week was good. Yeah, the week was good. And yeah,
week was good.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah, that's right. I mean getting back in the rink.
It was a good kind of test I think against London.
I know they didn't have their full roster, but the
Selings jumped all over them in that game. And we
can talk about that in a little bit. But I mean,
just with with everything going on, you know, that's kind
of I'm kind of the same as you groundhog Days,
doing the same thing all the time. It's kind of
how it goes. We do have a holiday coming up

(01:48):
to which we can talk about a little bit in
the last segment. I guess when this show airs it
it will be Thanksgiving, so we can we can talk
a little bit. Yeah, the stuff and yeah, the stuffing.
I know you had a life tip on the stuff
last year, so maybe we could get a get deeper
into that a little bit. We were in the final segment.
Oh okay, perfect, I'm really looking forward to the stuffing

(02:08):
talk in segment number three. Okay, so let's get into
some hockey talk though, So we don't have a ton
of time here before we have the alchomfibic steel Ens
defenseman onto the program. So first we'll start off. And
it was a little while ago now, but the Barry
Colds game, we can just kind of do a little
bit of that. You were there, of course, and the
Steelheads picked up a big win in Barry.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Yeah, they barely played well. Most of the play was
inside of the Barry zone. They came out again just
rolling four lines one after another. The top line of
ray Coff, actually the top line of ray Coff, Brtne
and MacDonell. We're in on all the goals, right, So,
I mean, what else is new with those three guys.
So Macdanell had a really good one timer, They were

(02:48):
really really good on the four check. Barry couldn't get
the puck out of their own tone. I think the
shots at one time are like twelve to three in
favor of the Steelheads or fifteen to two something like that.
I can't remember. But really really good game, really good
team effort, really good on their defenses, on their breakouts,
were really good just overall team after that game, and

(03:11):
that's the way it's been so far this year. That
they got to keep that up going to moving forward,
that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Yeah, I was gonna say the team effort has kind
of been a theme all season long. Early on in
the season, it just seems like everyone's firing. Of course,
you have the top line. It helps when they're firing
on the cylinders that they are right now. But yeah,
getting everybody involved is obviously a big part of this
of the Steelheads team, and they were able to do
that against the Barry Colts. Now we'll jump to the
game against London that was on Saturday this past weekend,

(03:40):
and my goodness, I mean, what a game for the
Brampton steel As I mentioned it a little bit there,
London missing a few of their guys, but still, I mean,
I don't know how much of a difference it would
have made with the steel Its the way that they
came out, the way they took it to the Knights
with Rakoff scoring was at sixteen seconds into the game.
I think it was that obviously got things going. Lescovar

(04:01):
back in the lineup, he throws a big hit early
on on Sam Dickinson. I think that kind of ramped
up the physicality a little bit for the Steelheads just
maybe got them a little more comfortable in that game,
and they from the beginning to the end. There was
a little stretch in there where London made a bit
of a push, but pretty much for the whole sixty minutes,
the Steelheads dominated that game.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, and it came out and they just all worked them, right,
They just worked them from start to end. But one
the only I think the only real pressure that the
London Night's really hot in that game is when the
steel has gotten some kindly trouble in the third period.
Other than that, it was all Steelheads that game. As
you know, I mean Ray coops scoring as you said,

(04:40):
eighteen or sixteen seconds in whatever it was, and yeah,
then he just kept going. Mark Tom was absolutely absolutely phenomenal.
Ivan Covid was great in between the in between the twine,
a great great, great team effort. Spencer Solva was good,
everybody was good. That's all you could say about that
out shooting him playing them again, total team effort. And

(05:02):
Steven Leskovar with a huge hit behind the net. I mean,
I think I think that the arena just like shut
from that bit, right, and he set the tone early. Yeah,
the guys really seemed to feed off that, it seemed
like so it was a great team effort.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, And I mean he's such a big piece to
the team, Leskovar is, and I think even though they
did win the first three games, they still missed him
on the back end. And to have him back is
really really big for this for this Steelheads team to
just have that steadying presence back there. We know Chas
Sharp kind of gave that last year as the overage
guys Spencer Siva there. Now he has maybe a little

(05:40):
bit more of an offensive side of the game. But Lescovar,
you know, he's a he's a defensive defenseman kind of guy,
and he's going to he's gonna be able to provide
stability back there. And he's just such a big piece
to the roster. And another thing too, like you said
with the hit, he just he brings energy to the game.
I think that's something too that that the steel Head
neat and any team needs is somebody to be there

(06:02):
to bring energy to the roster, and obviously he does that.
You talked a little bit about Ivankovic there. You can
maybe elaborate on his performance against London because you said,
I mean there were a couple of times where the
Knights pushed back a little bit because of the penalty
trouble that the steel Heads had. It was near the
end of the second period into the third period where
they started to really march to the penalty box, but

(06:23):
ivan Covid came up with save after save to keep
them in that game. When the Knights were pushing.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
I'll tell you, I was down on ice level, you know,
wink for interviews and all that kind of stuff when
you guys are up in the booth, and I couldn't
believe when you watch him when you're down on ice level,
watching Jack iven Covid and the way he positions itself
himself when you're down the ice level, when you see everything,
My goodness me. I mean, he made this one save

(06:49):
when he jumped to his right and stuck out his
right patterns. It's like unbelievable. And he's just he knows
like he's just so good at positioning and that's what
makes him so good. I think so. But yeah, he
was really good that game. He's been really good all
season long so far. I mean already already ohl Goaltender
of the Week, right, I don't think it's going to

(07:09):
be his first time either as me right, so he
looked really good. He looked really really good that game.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
And then he doesn't get the start. In the game
against Niagara, you get Jacob Gibbons in there getting his
first action of the regular season since he was traded
over from the Erie Otters. Niagara came out strong in
that game. I mean the ending shots were forty to
thirty four in favor of Brampton, so they still ended
up out shooting them. But I just think the way
that the Ice Dogs came out, and it was their

(07:37):
home openers, you knew there's going to be energy in
the building. He knew that that they were going to
come out with a lot of energy, and then it
just seemed like they maybe took it to the sealings
early on in that game.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Yeah, they came up with a lot of speed. They
came out with a lot of speed that game, and
Martone scored eighteen seconds into that game and then it
was a nice pass from Ray Coop whatnot. And then
after that, maybe there was a couple of shots that
Jacob Gibbons would want to have back, right, and you know,
maybe there was some jitters going through his going through
his stomach of course, being his first start as a Steelhead,

(08:06):
and James Richmond said in the interview, that's the that's
the game that we wanted Jacob Gibbons to start. That
We had it circled on our calendar, right, but you know,
give and see. There was a couple, like I said,
a couple of shots that you want to have back.
But he kind of settled in after that he did
get pulled. Of course, that guy that Colvid came in
and then we'll talk about what happened with that, and
then Jacob Gibbons had to come back in. But yeah, no,

(08:30):
full credit to the nay Greistos. They came out with
a lot of speed. They came out with a lot
of energy that game. Ryan Robrick was really good. Kevin
he with a hat trick that game. And boy Kevin
he he was he was really flying that game. So
but I expect next time these two teams play it
won't be like that. That's my opinion. Guarantee. I can

(08:53):
guarantee you.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
That I think you said it pretty well there. They
came out flying in that one, and then Ivankovic does
come in. Of course, we have the fight between him
and Owen Flores, and that ends up in the four
game suspension for Jack Ivan kobc Sam on the other
side for Owen Flores. We're going to talk a little
bit more about that suspension when we get into the
last segment of our show, but we're going to take
a break right now here on Saga nine sixty am.

(09:14):
When we come back, we'll have Brampton Steel Edg's defenseman
Yakom Fibger on the show. You're listening to trout Talk
here on Saga nine sixty am. And welcome back to
trout Talk here on Saga nine sixty am. I'm Brendan
Lang alongside mikey K, Mike Carafelitis. Thank you for coming
along here and listening on this Sunday afternoon or wherever

(09:35):
you're listening to this podcast. Now, I'd like to welcome
onto the show Brampton Steele Heads second year defenceman Yakub Fibiger. Yakub,
thanks for coming on. How are you doing today?

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Hi guys, how are you? Thanks for having me?

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Hey anytime? Yaka parw are you doing You look like
you're pretty relaxed over there. You're back up your billard house.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
Yeah, I just came back from practice, so we just
got home five minutes I go.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
So yeah, okay, I want to ask your first house
practice been so far this week?

Speaker 3 (10:07):
That's pretty tough. I like we skated a little bit.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
But.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
That's all we need. We needed to do that. It
is good and we are ready to go to go
this weekend. Uh.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
So we talked about the practice. I want to kind
of talk about one game at home on the weekend
against the London Nights of course, a team that won
the OHL last year and it's going to be around
kind of the top this year, along with you guys
as well. So what was that like to be able
to face off with them early on in the season
and how did you think you guys played in that one?
Obviously getting a big win.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
Yeah, I mean it was a really big win for us.
Like we played London Norri two times. There's a there's
a top team right there, but there were missing a
bunch of players of course, but still very strong team
and I think we played really well. We started really
well and I think the third barand wasn't our best,
but we came out with a big win. So that's

(11:01):
important for us.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Yeah, I mean, I thought, you guys really really took
it to the right in the beginning, and it just
shift after shift after shift, and I followed maybe maybe
a little bit of penalty trouble you'd probably agree in
the third period that kind of gave blood and a
little tried they tried to get the momentum, but it
never happened. So that's a good thing. But the acle
let's talk about your off season. Of course, you know,

(11:24):
you were drafted by the boy, the Seattle Kraken, and
you went to Seattle camp and whatnot. What did you
learn down there in Seattle camp? Uh?

Speaker 3 (11:36):
Oh, yeah, it was a it was a summer, interesting
summer for me. I was all over the place. You know.
We had a always lit the draft and the development
camp and some national team, then a lot of training,
a lot of skates, so not much time. But I

(11:58):
enjoyed it. And uh, if you want to talk out
a draft, and it was amazing, you know, to be
drafted by Seattle and to see how things works on
a development camp and then of course on training camp
after and rookie tournament. It was a great experience and

(12:18):
I think I learned a lot of things and I'll
try to keep learning and hopefully next to our show
Stronger and we'll see what happens.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
You talk about the draft, could you maybe take us
through what the what the process was like for you,
Like did you know Seattle was gonna pick you? Did
you have a lot of conversations with them? Were there
other teams in the mix? Just how did that all
kind of shake out?

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yeah? I mean like throughout the year I had, I
would say a lot of meetings with the team, So
I didn't expect like like one or two teams, especially,
like I wouldn't say like, yeah, I knew Seattle was
about to pick me by I talked to them, of course,
but I didn't know. And I was just like watching
the draft at home with my family, and then just

(13:05):
when Seattle picked me, it was a great moment for me.
I enjoyed it and I enjoyed the time with my family.
And it was maybe, I know, five hours and I
was heading to airport to go to the Dolphin camp,
so it was pretty quick.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
You know, It's unbelievable to me for a guy that
comes over from from check you uh, and how fast
you learn the English language is still unbelievable. To me,
like you just seem you fit in right away, right,
you know, and that's something you should be very very
very proud of, right I mean compared to like because

(13:39):
you know there's other guys that have come over here
from Europe and all that kind of stuff and it
takes him a while that you know, to fit in.
But you like a glove, like an absolute glove, I
mean a white glove, you know what I mean? Yeah, unbelievable.
So when you were in when you're in Seattle, that
kind of stuff there camp whatnot? What did they teach you? Like,

(14:02):
what did they try to work on with you the most?

Speaker 3 (14:10):
Uh? Well, I mean they want to like they walk
with us on like a lot of things, like like
the development coaches in a development camp, Like every single
coach is different, different style, different techniques how to teach things.
So there's a lot of new stuff for me. And
I wouldn't say there was something like uh they would

(14:32):
tell me, yeah, we need you to work on this,
like on ice or something. We work on everything. The
big thing for me was always slay over the summer
the gym, getting getting a little bit stronger in the gym.
I think I'm in a good way. I got a
little bit stronger, but still I need to get more
right so.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
I could see you that.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Yeah, so they work.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
I mean look look I mean prepared the last yeah,
I mean compared last year, Like your arms are like
this now. And I remember when you walked on the bus,
I was like, whoa looly this guy. Goodness, Like you're
just you really filled out right, So that's good. That's
that comes from hard work and and that's great.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
Mikey had talked there a little bit about uh, you
know you coming over from from check you last year
and and fitting in pretty quickly and obviously that that
was the case. And you talked a little bit about,
you know, having Adam Zidlicky here in Brampton or Mississauga
last year that that helped you along. Now having Martin
Vashula coming in from Chechia, are you kind of you know,
taking him under your wing, like maybe there's a bit

(15:40):
of a carry over there now with with another guy
coming over from your country now playing on your team
as well.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Yeah, of course it's great to have three guys, three
check guys from one country, like getting one team.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
It's unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (15:53):
So we are trying to help Martin out. You know,
it's not really easy for him either because he comes
like dude team who is one of the best from
the from the league. So when I came over last year,
it was a little bit easier. We're getting kind of
young and everyone was not as experience as now, so
it's it's tough for him, but we are trying to
help him with Adam uh and I think he's doing

(16:17):
very well. So yeah, it's it's always good to have
someone we have to you can talk to in your
in your language, So yeah, it's good.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
I love it when you guys are talking check on
the bus and stuff like that, or talking check period.
I love it. I love it so much. I turned on.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
I'm trying to can you understand Mikey trying.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
I'm not yet. I'm trying to pick it up when
you guys are speaking and I and I hear like
her zigs, I hear you, and I turned around the Martin,
I just kind of smile and I want to I'm
trying to learn.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
What did you pick up so far? Absolutely nothing?

Speaker 2 (16:53):
Absolutely nothing. I'm trying though, I'm trying, and we're going
to talk about that after. But you know what, let's
I want to talk about the game and name it
was one of those games. I thought maybe.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
It was.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
It was it was a tough loss and whatnot. But
what did you what did you guys in a whole
learn from that game moving forward? Uh?

Speaker 3 (17:13):
You know what, I think, like it wasn't it wasn't
our like one of the best games. Obviously it was.
It was pretty bad for us, But I think every
team kind of needs that, you know, like, uh, you
can be just I know, winning every every single game.
So obviously we want to win that game, but we lost.

(17:34):
It happens. We We're gonna learn from that, and I
think it's better to lose now then then later in
the season. So you're gonna learn from it, and hopefully
next time, I believe we'll we'll get back to them.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
I totally agree with you there, my friends, And it's
funny every word that you just said there, I said
that to it Griccati over there, everywhere that you said
just said just to say, that's hilarious. I said, I
can't win the mall. I go to one of those games,
one of those games and act like the parade they're
starting the parade over there just to say anyways.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
And also in that game, of course you have the
goalie fight. You have Owen Flora's facing off against Jack
Ivan Kobe. I know that the result obviously isn't isn't
great with the four game suspension for Jack, but but
have you ever been in a game with a goalie
fight before?

Speaker 2 (18:26):
Now?

Speaker 3 (18:26):
I never seen any of my life. So I was
actually like when the iceman it happened, I was watching
the scrumble on the ice and then the Naga Nagara
guy goes to me and like, oh, look look, so
I turned around I saw Kobe if Flora's fighting.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
I was like, oh my god, this is bad.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
So obviously, like you you don't see goalie fight every day.
But how you said that four games suspension isn't really
good for us, Like, I mean, Kobe's are one of
our best players, so we have to have good games
now without him, and like, we'll see what happens, but
I hope we'll not find ever again. But yeah, exactly,

(19:10):
yeah he tried, so he did.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
He did, he did, but he didn't. I tell you this.
It was a seventeen year old against a twenty year old, right.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
Yeah, good, yeah, good, good, for Kobe, Like I mean,
he was trying to the game wasn't going our way,
so he was trying to somehow, uh, get back us,
get get back us. I'm sorry, you know what I mean,
like get us going. Yeah, and well it didn't happen,
but still it's a it's good on him, like he

(19:39):
fought seventeen year old. The only only thing about that
is the four game suspensions. But you know what had
already happened. We can do nothing about it now, so
let's just move on and we'll we'll be back and
I'm sure all good.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
Yeah, for sure. I mean you guys, you know you
just move on. You can't win them all on to
the next. You couldn't have said a better myself. Everything
you've said is just perfect, perfect. So ever since you've
been in cancer. Now this is what your second year
in Canada, right right? Okay, So what are some of
the things now, some Canadian things that you'd like to do,
you know what I mean? Like now that you've been here, Yeah,

(20:16):
now you've been here, what did you do in the
summertime and whatnot? I know you were busy and whatnot
with the draft and whatever, but what did you do
did you go fishing? Did you did you catch you? So?
Did you? Did you see a lot of Canadian geese?
You know what I mean? Like something like that.

Speaker 3 (20:30):
I know, if you're able to talk about today, Mikey here.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Yeah, yeah, okay, oh wait wait wait gotcha? Right? But anyways,
give me some of the things that you that you
like to do now and maybe some of your favorite.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
Yeah yeah, you know, you know. It's it's different culture, different,
different style of living. But I like it. I mean
it's a it's different. But actually I have new billets
this year and our blood mom is a half foolish,
so the foods are similar. So that's good for me

(21:05):
because I to be honest, I don't like the Canadian food,
but I don't want be hating, so I like to
check food more. But yeah, but I mean I've been
fishing here, Simon fishing. That was great. Then we of
course go with the guys to hang out to some restaurants,

(21:25):
we do all kind of that stuff. So but I've
been here only for two months so far, so I'm
not like right back to you know, like last year
it was all new, like it was everything new to me,
and now I just don't need to go everywhere to
explore the downtown. Like last year. Like last year I
came over, I went downtown Arega Falls. This year, I

(21:47):
kind of came back from Seattle kind of like take
a deep breath, like, yeah, I finally them. I'm like
back into one spot and all over the place again,
and and so down a little bit. And you know,
the season is long, so lots of time mm hm.

Speaker 1 (22:04):
And you mentioned the cooking. What's uh, what's the dish
that she's making your your billet mohamed? That uh that
you really look forward to.

Speaker 3 (22:13):
Well, you know you probably heard that one before. Schnitzel
is my my favorite. But there's still nothing I can
I can compare, compare like Canadian food. I don't know,
like my style maybe yeah.

Speaker 2 (22:32):
Of course that's a big.

Speaker 3 (22:36):
Okay, yeah, yeah we do. We do Progie in check.
But we have like a lot of sauces, dumplings, all
this stuff. Like of course we are big on big,
big on soups. So there's lots of stuff. But I
mean it's still a food, right, I do will eat
it and you're ready to.

Speaker 2 (22:53):
Absolutely just as long as said yeah, exactly, it's good
and it's good to go that's it. I like that.
That's a great that's a great choice. All right, Let's
talk about the team for a second here, Yaka, Is
this one of the best teams you've ever played on?

Speaker 3 (23:07):
Yeah? For sure. I mean, I mean we have lots
of lots of skill on that team, lots of great guys,
and I think we all go far this year and
hopefully we will. So this is one of the best
teams for sure.

Speaker 1 (23:22):
And you talk about the skill and everything like that,
but also how about like the leadership group. I know
a new captain was announced in border martone and and
lots of different assistant captains as well. So how is
how's the leadership kind of been? And I know that
this team is known to be pretty close off the ice.

Speaker 3 (23:39):
Yeah, I mean we're really tight group, and there's a
lot of leaders in that room. I mean every single
guy can be a leader in the room. I mean
it's not only the guys wearing the letters, right, but
obviously the guys wearing the letters are like the biggest
leaders on a team. We have Spencer Shova, he was
captain two years before Ei uh, Marty. I think he's

(24:02):
doing pretty pretty good and being captain, like we have
a really good group, and I think that's the main
thing for us to not just the skill, but the
leadership and good group, good locker room. So that's good
for us.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
All right. How do you say Happy Thanksgiving in Check?

Speaker 3 (24:20):
Well, you know what, Mikey, we don't. We don't do Thanksgiving.

Speaker 2 (24:22):
So oh, I'm sorry. Oh my goodness, Okay, I did
not know.

Speaker 3 (24:29):
You don't have to be sorry about it. We just
we just don't. Like, it's not a big thing in Check.
You know, you can say Thanksgiving, it's called Yiku's down,
but nobody, no one really cares us in Check, so
so it's not a big thing like here Christmas, Christmas,
Christmas is big, Easter is pretty big now, Halloween is,
but it wasn't before because you know, it's an American

(24:52):
thing again, so we're kind of like trying to take over,
but it's still not as big as Christmas.

Speaker 1 (25:00):
I like that, great, great yes, trying to take over Halloween.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
You know, I get these big kids that come to
the door, and I know I don't want to give
them candy. Seriously, if they're over like thirteen years old,
I don't want to give them nothing. And I remember
last year ya, I'll tell you a funny stories. So
many of them came to like thirteen fourteen year olds
and they always come at like ninth at like after
nine o'clock and they just put their thing out or
like this, so trip the treat. I remember, I looked

(25:26):
at them and said how old are you? I said,
he says, how old are you?

Speaker 3 (25:30):
Mikey? You know the guys last year. The guys last
year made me go for Halloween to do he want
to figure out treat? I never did that in my life.
When I told them, they was like, yeah, you have
to go. Last year. Last year I went to our house.
I was so embarrassed when I when I when they
opened the door, I was like, trick on treat and
they're like look at me like they wanted to kill me.

(25:53):
Like one house home.

Speaker 1 (25:56):
What did you dress up as? What was the costume?

Speaker 2 (25:59):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (26:00):
I think last year I was bleding with Margoudreau and
Finn Harding and we had some we had some bear costumes,
so it was a was a bear. So it's kind
of funny story.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
Yeah, do you have you still have that costume?

Speaker 3 (26:17):
It was it was from the bills, So so.

Speaker 2 (26:20):
That's actually pretty funny enough. That's you know what, It's
just like a rookie thing, right, they made you like go, uh.

Speaker 3 (26:27):
Yeah, I mean it was my first time ever. I
was seventeen, so it's kind whatever.

Speaker 1 (26:33):
Hey, there you go. You got the experience though, you
got the experience, right, yeah, all right, exactly. Thank you
so much for coming on here today chatting with us.
I know it's it's obviously busy right now, season getting started,
so thanks for coming on and we'll talk to you again.
Good luck for the rest of the season.

Speaker 3 (26:51):
Thank you, Thanks for having me a good one guys.

Speaker 1 (26:55):
Sir, thank you, Yes to you this weekend. All right.
That was Steelhead's second can you hear defenseman Yakub Fibger.
We'll be back after this to wrap up that interview
and also talk about games coming up here in the
near future. I'm Brendan Lang. That's mikey k. Thanks for
coming along here on trout Talk Saga nine sixty am.

(27:16):
And welcome back to trout Talk on Saga nine sixty AM.
Brendan Lang along with mikey Ka, Mike Cara Felitis here
on trout Talk, and we just spoke to Steelhead's defenseman
Yakub Fibigeruh, you can just tell. I mean we talk
about all the always the maturity and the closeness of
the team, but you had said it there. You know

(27:37):
that it's something to really be proud of and his
in his case of learning the language and getting assimilated
so quickly into into the team culture, into the culture
around here, and you can tell that you know, maybe
he is even a little more comfortable this year than
he was even a season ago.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Oh yeah, can totally tell, totally. So I mean, for
I've remember when we interviewed him last year, right, and
he was you know, he answered the question and that's it.
Answer the question, that's it. Maybe said you know a
little funny things there. But you can see the character
of him too, right, He's got a great character and
he's he's really he's he's getting better. Like remember in

(28:15):
the beginning of the season last year, you know, he
was still getting comfortable, and that's what the way it
is with all the important guys, right, But he caught
on really quickly, really quickly, right, and he just got
better and better and better back there on the back end.
And he started off so strong a Brendan, I mean,
already so I mean already this year he's got you know,

(28:37):
two assists and he's a plus one. That's not that's
pretty good through five games for for defense, but unbelievable
how much he's grown to be to be a man,
in my opinion, and you know, to learn the language,
as you said, and back on the back end, and
he's helping Barton Vakoulik and you could see that in

(28:57):
him and Zaid Lucky right and you know the check
threesome there, the three Musketeers, I guess we can call
him at right now or something like that. But great guys,
great kids, and he's huge, He's huge in that back end.

Speaker 1 (29:11):
Yakober Yeah, and the first second we talked a little
bit about Stevie Leskovar coming back and Yakofiviger another guy
that's just such a big, steadying presence on the back end,
and you can tell like he was he's always been
a great skater and the skating has even taken another
step this year and and we've talked about it before.
Just the way his ability to close gaps on the

(29:33):
back end, I think is something that really stands out
to me when I when I watch him play, he
just he moves the puck extremely well. And yeah, we
of course talk about how getting assimilated off the ice
is difficult when you're coming over from a different country
at seventeen years old, eighteen years old but now and
also getting a similar on the ice is difficult too,

(29:54):
And he's done that seamlessly and now into a second
season looking even stronger than he did last year. And
I think it is pretty awesome that you have three
guys from the same country that are that are on
the team and they get to kind of, you know,
hang out together and speak the same level and all
that stuff. It helps. It for sure helps immensely. So
it is pretty cool. And I like what he said
too about how for Martin it might be a little

(30:16):
bit more difficult to kind of get into it on
the ice because of the team is a little bit older.
You know, they're trying to go for an Ohl Championship,
Memorial Cup. Last year was more of a learning season,
so he could get in there a lot and had
more opportunities maybe, So I thought that that was pretty
interesting that he kind of felt that that way as well.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
Yeah, that's exactly it, right, And you know, he said
he it's funny how he said, you know, Martin mccoole,
that came over last year or he came over this year.
But last year he was on one of the best
teams in the check but they were younger and stuff
like that. Exactly what you're saying, you know, And now
he's coming on to this team that's going for it
for sure, going for it all right. So you know
he's trying to mess in with some older guys and whatnot.
But how about the perfect teacher to teach him mom,

(30:54):
you know under the wings and Yaka Fibacar, I mean,
great character, great guys. It'd lucky to I mean, just
just perfect, perfect situation for Mark mccooley to walk into, just.

Speaker 1 (31:08):
Like it was a great situation for for Yakam to
talk into last year.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
So exactly.

Speaker 1 (31:14):
Yeah, big thanks to him for coming on, like you said, great, great, great,
uh great talking with him, yes, and great talking with him.
And I know we'll have him on the show again
before the season's over. So lots of big stuff for
your coming up for for the Brampton Siealds. We'll kind
of get into, I guess the the games that are
going to be played now when this episode air it's

(31:34):
the two games are going to be finished, but we
can still talk about the two teams they're going to
be facing off with. I know they've already played Barry once.
They're gonna go to Barry once again, uh to face
off against them on Saturday. But first let's talk about
the the game coming up against Windsor. Windsor has gone
off to a pretty good start this year.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
Oh look at the Ethan Belcheads back. What is he
six six six or six seven or whatever he is?
And man, he's looking good right now. And they got
a green tree there, they got spell great, they could
score a lot of goals. Nesbitz there, Christaforo on the
back end. They gotta Joey Costanzeo's playing really well in

(32:13):
net right now for them. Uh so, yeah, this is
a team that you know, you gotta you gotta, you
gotta four check them, you gotta for check their defense.
If I'm the Steelheads, and I'm sure James Richmond system
is gonna be perfect for that. Don't let them get
out of their own zone. And I think the key
to this game, because winsors very very good team is

(32:33):
the breakouts, because they're so very very fast in the front.
So if they could break out fast and the Steve
le thing, they could break out fast. So far this year,
they should be okay against the winsor spitfires in my opinion.

Speaker 1 (32:48):
Yeah, I mean you talk about the kind of the
offensive prowess that they have and Liam green Tree of
course leading that he's got nine points in four games
to start this year. I mean, he is a guy
who uh the l a draft pick U as somebody
who you're gonna have to watch out for, of course
any time that he's on the ice. Uh, and you
know it's gonna be a little bit more difficult. I mean,

(33:11):
Jacob Gibbons, I thought, you know, there were, like you said,
maybe goals that he would like to have back in
that one, and I think you know, there's definitely some
urs that go into playing. So he'll be more ready,
more ready for sure to play in these two games.
But you still are missing your number one goalie, so
there are gonna be yes.

Speaker 2 (33:26):
No, sorry before I forget, that's why I sorry about that.
Two guys are going to be back in the lineup
that way out of the lineup against the Greystock. Spencer
Silva will be back in the lineup and will be
back in the lineup. Spencer Silva is a big loss
to get to get him back in there, so any
and so that's gonna help too.

Speaker 1 (33:46):
For sure. Yeah, one hundred percent it will. And and
I think just you know, now with with Gibbons having
a game under his belt, he's going to be a
little more comfortable and I would expect a great performance
from him, uh in that game against Windsor. But still
regardless of who the who the other goalie in the
net is that you are still missing your number one
guy and Ivan Covid. So the defense is going to

(34:06):
have to be tight against a team that can score
goals in bunches, and they've shown that so far this year.
Just looking at the at the numbers here, they've got
thirty one goals scored for that leads THEHL and they've
only allowed twelve goals on the other side. So they've
been they've been pretty stout. I mean, they've they've done
a lot of things well, and they lead the OHL

(34:28):
in penalty minutes, so you know there's toughness there as well.
It's it's gonna be a great game on Friday. I'm
really really looking for.

Speaker 2 (34:36):
Yeah, yeah, big time. I mean the League of penalty minutes. Uh,
you know the Steelers, they don't back down. Let's just
say that. So it might be, uh, might be an
intense game. We're looking at their lands, so it's gonna Yeah,
that's gonna be a good one. But they need to
get they need to get traffic in front of Cristanzo.
They need to just keep shooting on them. And I'm

(35:01):
with you. I think Gibbets is going to happen. I
think he's gonna come out of this. And you know
what it's like, It's like Bill Belichick says, you know,
I called Dames Richmond, Bill Belichick, and you know, the
next man up right, yep, next that's right. But now
he's had, you know, almost a full week of practice
being the number one guy, and I'm sure he's just
going to be just fine. I mean he was see
Jacob Gibbons was pretty good when they had that carousel

(35:23):
goalies in Eerie. I mean it was six or five
or six of them last year, right, So I expect
him to be pretty good this weekend. Yeah, the next
four games are his.

Speaker 1 (35:32):
So yeah, one hundred percent. So looking forward to to
seeing him in the net and obviously getting like you said,
in the next four games. We can also talk about
the game against Barry. The Steelings have already gone to Berry,
They've already got a winning Barry winning that one forward
to one. We talked about it in the first segment
a little bit. So what do you think that that
they can take from the game there that they beat
the Barry Colton bring it into this next one and

(35:55):
try to do the same thing or maybe have the
same blueprint of how to beat this team.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
And it oh pressure, take it to them, take it
to them right to different the opening with so use
their speed and just the intensity, keep the intensity level
up the whole time. And that's what they did, and
that's what they did against the Barry Colts. Barry Colts
were moving, they were a little bit slow that game.
They were missing I give them, you know one thing.

(36:20):
They were missing Riley Patterson. They were missing bow Achy
who was supposed to be in the lineup that game
but apparently got scratched last minute. But he will be
in the lineup this game. So they're going to have
those two back. Barrys look like a different team a
little bit. Since those two have come back So if
the steel Heads can take it to them in the

(36:40):
beginning and score quickly on Sam Hillibrand and we know
about Sam Hillbrand the way he's played against the Steelheads
in the past, right, it's like he's on a mission
to destroy them because he was an emergency backup at
one time. So great goalie. It's going to be an
intense matchup up and Barry, especially on a Saturday night,
and you know it's going to be and the fans
and Barry are going to be really ramped up. So

(37:03):
take it to them in the beginning, get them emotional
intensity level up, take it to them, and then on
the four check get those shots on goal like they
did the first game, and they should be all right
a card And that line of Ray, Coff, Marton and
MacDonell was absolutely fantastic in that first game. So they're
gonna need they're gonna need that, and they're gonna need
all four lines to just keep going.

Speaker 1 (37:25):
Yeah. I feel like that's a big thing with this Steam.
I know we talk about the depth so much, but
just the fact that they can roll the four lines
and they've done that so far this year with great success.
And I think you talk about the pressure. That's a
big course going into Barry. We discussed it the first
time they went there. It's always a tough place to play,
So going into Barry, being able to get off to
a good start is a big key, I would say

(37:46):
for the steel Legs, and I feel like they've done
that really good job of that this season, getting off
the fast starts. I mean even the game that they
that they lose against Niagara. You said it, Martone scores
within the first minute of the game, Ray Kov within
first sixteen seconds of the game against London, even if
you go back to the first game, sure it was disallowed,
but Paanvlsen's scored a goal really early on in that.
Like they they've seemed to have been able to get

(38:08):
off to good starts, and I think that that's going
to continue and going to have to continue if they
want to win that game against it. Yeah, for sure.
And you said it as well, bo Ache and Riley
Patterson two massive pieces to their lineup that they were
missing the last time. To see how it's played them.
So it'll be a different game. It will one hundred
percent be a different game this time around against the

(38:29):
Barry Colts. And when we talked about it before the
season started. We both had them in the top four
in the Eastern Conference, and I still think that that's
going to be the case. So it will be a
different game for sure this time around. All right, So
before we finish off today, we'll talk quickly two other things.
One thing we'll stick with the Steelheads here, and that's
the Jack Ivan Covid suspension. You heard us talking about

(38:50):
it in the first segment. Also discussed it a little
bit there with with Fibby, but Ivan Covid four game suspension.
What do you think of it from a league standpoint?
I guess I.

Speaker 2 (39:02):
Don't like it. I'm gonna be honest, I don't like
it one bit. Four games, A little bit harsh, A
little bit harsh. When see that whole play, that whole
sequence was. It was a big scrum and they were mad.
See they were mad. Nagar was mad because Kevin he

(39:23):
got kinde took a little shot from Lescovar and that's
what ended up with the scrum and whatnot, right, and
then the goalie decided to go at it. There was
another scrum going up on Tatra. Guska was getting into it.
I could do I think Shanowski. I believe yes, it
was yes, And then all of a sudden, I looked
down on my left and what is what is going on?

(39:44):
You know, like all of a sudden, they're going to
go out of old Flora's a thing. Besides that four
game suspension for that, no, I think it's a little
bit too harsh. Maybe I could have seen maybe two games,
one game and whatnot, But four games and a twenty
year old Flores against a seventeen year old ive in COVID.
And then when and I'll say that and just my opinion,
when I of COVID was down on the ground, Flora's

(40:06):
game an extra couple shots, two three shots, which I
thought was unacceptable in my mind. Right, So yeah, if anything,
if anything, you get Flora as the extra suspension because
of that. That's my opinion on that. But four games
each too harsh.

Speaker 1 (40:22):
Yeah, there definitely were some extra shots. I mean, you
were in the building. I just saw after the fact.
But yeah, I completely agree with you. I just think
four games doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless
there's a rule in the rule book that I'm not
aware of that any goalie fight is a four game suspension.
I just don't see what the grounds would be to
give them a four game suspension. If you look at

(40:43):
every other fight in the league, it's a five minute penalty, sure, instigators,
whatever could be a ten minute misconduct, whatever it might be.
But then goalie fights, it's a four game suspension. Like,
I just don't see how that makes any sense. Sure,
taking off the mast, okay, fine, taking off a helmet,
you're gonna get an extra suspension of that. Okay, a game,
you get a game for that. I just don't see
where the four games comes from. It just doesn't make

(41:04):
a whole lot of sense.

Speaker 2 (41:05):
Yeah, exactly, So what guys can skate in front of
their skate in front of the goalies and cause trouble
and the goalies can't do anything, just saying so what
absolutely when one say, a player slashes a goalie and
the goalie decides he wants to retaliate and punch, which
is whatever I mean's part of the game, right, Some
of that stuff's going to happen sometimes. What you're gonna
get to get to games two games to the goalie

(41:27):
or something. But I don't know, it just doesn't make
sense to me. Four games is too much in my opinion.

Speaker 1 (41:31):
One hundred percent agree with that. All right, moving on
Quinton Musty, we'll get to him here quickly. With the
Sudbury Wolves not reporting there after being sent back from
San Jose camp, apparently has requested a trade. What what
if you heard or what's your kind of opinion on
this situation.

Speaker 2 (41:50):
Well, it's kind of weird actually, with the Musty situation,
because I mean, you look at two situations with Barlow, right,
and Barlow didn't want to go back to Owen Sound,
but he didn't report a camp, right, he didn't report
to their training camp. Quinton Musty did. He reported their
training camp. He went through the training camp with the
Sudbury Wolves and whatnot, and then all of a sudden
he goes to San Jose camp and all of a

(42:11):
sudden he wants a trade. I don't know, I just
find that kind of weird. But that's just the way
Quinton feels. But I don't know, somebody's gonna pick him up, obviously,
and it's interesting to see who picks him up. I mean,
in my mind, I don't I don't know. I mean,
I know the steel has a million tons of picks.

(42:32):
I mean, seven seconds or six, the Hurts whatnot. So
I'm not sure if they're gonna go after him. But
you know, there's a couple of names that I've been
in the mix of the steel Heads. I don't want
to discuss, you know, say that right now, but I
don't know. I don't know for sure. But we'll see
what happens. We'll get Musty. But my mind's a little
bit weird.

Speaker 1 (42:50):
No, Yeah, I agree, you're right, like going to camp
first and then heading off to San Jose and then
saying he doesn't want to be there. Yeah, there's definitely,
I mean, probably more to the story than We're not
going to be privy to all the of course that
that goes on, so we don't know exactly what that
would be. But but yeah, somebody's gonna pick him up.

Speaker 2 (43:07):
I would.

Speaker 1 (43:08):
I think the Steelers, like you said, they have the
assets to do it. You also mentioned there's some other
names floating around that maybe the Steelers would be looking at,
and that's fine. I think personally that must He goes
to the Western Conference. I think that's probably more likely.
I don't know exactly what the draft coupverard looks like
for the contenders in the West, but I I would
think he goes to the west. That's just my feeling

(43:29):
on the on the situation.

Speaker 2 (43:31):
And you know, maybe you can see the Flint Firebirds
picking them up, right, I mean, it seems like it
seems like to me that the Wolves and the Flint
Firebirds have been trade partners a lot lately. I mean, well,
they just traded Mania, Kanyon and Collins over there, right,
so for Clint Camera and Eules whatever whatnot. But hey,

(43:52):
maybe you could see Musty going back to play with
those guys, right, So he is American too as well,
just to say so, maybe he wants to gold. So
I'm just sorted out there. Who knows, maybe London might
sweep pick.

Speaker 1 (44:06):
Imagine that we all know, we all know London. It'll
be London will be dancing around there. They'll not hundred
percent be and they're always in on those kind of moves.
So it'll be interesting to see for sure. Yeah, And
I would think it happens sooner than later. I mean, yeah,
I hope for the player it doesn't drag out too
long where he's not playing. You know, you want him

(44:28):
to be to be playing. So we'll see, we'll see
what it'll be interest shakes out with that for sure.
It definitely will be interesting. All right, before we send
things off, we usually do lifetips, but we have a
holiday actually right now. It's Thanksgiving Sunday. Mikey. I know
you're a big Thanksgiving guy. We talked about discussing before.
What are your plans for Thanksgiving? What's what's what's going

(44:48):
on today?

Speaker 2 (44:49):
All right, So everybody's going over to my sister selves,
both families, so it's gonna be about oh my goodness,
ten fifteen, twenty five people the immediate this is just
the media, families whatnot. So yeah, big Thanksgiving dinner going
on there. And I made sure that they're gonna make
more stuffing this year. They're not going to be out

(45:11):
of stuffing this year because last year they were out
and I was very very upset, upset, upset in my mind,
But what are you gonna do?

Speaker 3 (45:18):
Right?

Speaker 2 (45:19):
And yeah, so yeah, there's gonna be lots of food
and it's gonna be all about family and that's what
it's all about, around the family and whatnot. So I'm
looking forward to it. And like I said, the stuffing
better be there otherwise because I told that my sister
and everybody else who's you know, who's going to be
cooking that day, please make sure that you make more
stuffing because last year when I turned around, it was gone.

(45:41):
This year, I'm gonna turn around and I better be
up to here. I'm just saying, I'm just gonna be
very grateful to be even to be able to have
the opportunity to have stuffing. So but yeah, it's all
about family. To me, I don't even care about that,
and that's that's it.

Speaker 1 (45:57):
Yeah, one hundred percent. I'm gonna be going to my
grandparents house. We'll have a family over, and I'm telling
you there's never been a shortage of food. Lot there's
there's there's leftovers for weeks. Oh yeah, the turkey, the
stuff and all that. So definitely looking forward to it.
But you're right, it's all about family. It's all getting
together and seeing everybody again. And you know that's exactly

(46:21):
so looking forward to it. I'm definitely looking forward to it.
Football as well. We get football on Thanksgiving. Yes, so
there's gonna be gonna be lots going on. Gonna be
lots going on, for sure, Uh definitely, yeah, for sure
will be. It will be a great day all right, Mikey,
thank you. Thank you to Yak Fibergrit for coming on

(46:42):
the program. Great to chat with him. And thank you

that's right, that's right, share it, share any everything, not
just the stuffing everything that's right, that's right, all right,

thank you for coming along. I'm Brendan Lang, that's Mikey
K Mike Cara Felitis. We're signing off here on trout
