Speaker 1 (00:15):
Okay, welcome to truck down right here and us Tom sounding.
I'm sixty am, the official podcast up the Brampton Steelheads.
Welcome in here. My name is Mike Carrihalitis. Along with
my partner Brendan Lang, we're both broadcasters for the Brampton
Steelheads and let's start off. Brendan, how are you doing,
my friends?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, I'm doing okay.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
You know, I know we always talk about just kind
of how the same thing's been going on. I actually
since the last time we talked, I've been to two
different concerts, so that was some exciting times we have
as of recording today. The Toronto Raptors get underway today,
so I'm excited to watch them tonight. Got the NBA
kicked off yesterday with the Lakers and Celtics winning yesterday,
(00:57):
so definitely looking forward to that.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
And yeah, it's been.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
A it's been a pretty i guess, eventful few days
since the last time we talked on here for me,
but other than that, you know, just getting work done
like usual.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
And yeah, that's pretty much it. Though. It's been it's
been a pretty good few days.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah, good, that's good man, Like you know what, you
know what it's you know what I like. I like
wearing shorts right now. This is in this weather, right,
it's just unbelievable. At the end of end of October.
I'm wearing shorts right now. I remember at this time,
I think last year I was wearing jeans and sweatshirts
and whatnot. Right, But the weather's been great just to
get outside and whatnot. Right, So.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
It's been awesome. And I mean I get up pretty early.
I know you do as well. The only thing is
is that when you go outside in the morning, I
need pants, and then when I leave work, I'm sweating
because I have pants on.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
That's the only problem. It's it's a little cooler in
the morning and then it just gets warm.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
So but I agree, though, I agree wearing shorts of
this time because I was out last night for one
of the concerts and then it was even around like
ten o'clock, it was still warm.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
I was still wearing shorts and a T shirt. It
was there, you go, beautiful outside.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
What cars did you see?
Speaker 2 (02:04):
I saw a guy named m J. Lenderman.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Never heard of him before. One of my friends had
a had an extra ticket, so I went to see him.
That was at Lee's Palace in Toronto, so it was
a pretty good spot. And then yesterday I saw a
band called the Drive By Truckers. They yeah, yeah, the
My my uncle is a fan, so it was his birthday,
so we went there to uh to check them out.
(02:27):
That was at the dan Forth Music Hall. First time
I've been there, so so cool spot to see as well.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Very cool. What do they call them on the Truckers?
Speaker 2 (02:35):
The drive by Truckers.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
The drive by Fuckers. I'm gonna have to remember that, Okay, yeah,
maybe the day right.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Well, they're a little old, I think that lead singers
like sixty two, like they've been around for a long time.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Okay, yeah and all that. That's great, that's great. Yeah,
that's good. So let's talk briefly. Let's get through it
quickly here before our guests comes out. Let's go through
what we gonna be talking about here today. We're gonna
talk about the Steelheads last two games. Our special guest
special guest in this episode is gonna be Spencer's Soba,
(03:10):
assistant captain of your Brampton Steelheads former captain of the
Ariaders can move here in the off season. Then we're
gonna talk about the CHL Top ten. Then we're gonna
talk about, you know, got any surprises in that CHL
top ten that you see are the OHL teams or
that we see are the OHL teams. You know, we're
gonna talk about, you know, who needs to step up
(03:30):
for the Steelheads of course, and NHL preliminary scouting list
is up, so we're gonna talk about that there's some
Steelheads on that list and whatnot. Let's talk about the
last two games, Brendan. Let's start off of last Friday
against the Ottawa sixty sevens, which was a three to
two huge win, I mean absolutely huge, winning a shootout
(03:52):
against the not Ottawa team.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Yeah, massive, massive win. We talked about how big of
a home stand this would be. The three games they
still one left coming up against the Barry Colts here
on Friday. When this episode comes out, it'll have been
played already. But to start it out by getting a
win and a game where I think they started off
a little bit slow against an Ottawa team that kind
of held some offensive zone time quite a bit in
(04:16):
the first period, and then the steel Heads kind of
ramped it up a little bit and a little bit
more as they went on in the game and to
get that game to a shootout. Ottawa also was riding
a three game losing streak coming into it. They had
just blown a lead the night before against the niak
raa ice dog, so you knew that they'd be bringing
a lot of energy to start the game. But the
Steelers did a great job of kind of weathering that
storm from Ottawan just getting it to the end where
(04:38):
they were able to get through overtime. It's well documented
the struggles that they've had in overtime going back to
last year and in the game that we'll talk about
here in a moment. So to get through overtime and
then get to the shootout also awesome for Jacob Gibbons
to get his first win as of Brampton Steelhead.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Great to see that.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
And now we know Jack ivan Kovic will be back
in the net this Friday as he's back from suspension.
But for Jacob Gibbons, I think that's just a big
kind of confidence booster. You get in quite a few
games here with Ivan Covid getting suspended, you get into
four games with him getting suspended early in the year.
You get that first win out of the way. So
now when he's going to be needed going forward. I
think he'll probably be a little more comfortable in the net.
And I thought he looked really good the two games
(05:17):
that they played this weekend, Like he looked really solid
against Ottawa and also looked really solid against Saganaw as well.
So definitely a lot of positives coming from that one.
And then and then of course the game against Saganaw,
which we can talk to about the moment.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
But but the Ottawa game a good win for sure.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Yeah, it was really really good. You know, two things
that really stood out to me the shootout port Demarton
five hundred had fakes there when he was coming in
on the shootout and absolutely be called McKenzie. I mean,
what a shootout goal that was. And and too, Jacob
Gibbons his confidence level when I interviewed him after the game. Again,
(05:53):
you know, he had a great game that day, and
what he said really really got to me. He said,
you know, you go, I'm getting more confidence now, he said,
and he goes, everything's slowing down. And when he said that,
you know, that's key for a goaltender if everything's slowing down, right,
And he had a great game, and he had a
great game and say he had a nice game on
Saturday as well, but something if this ever happens again
(06:18):
with Jack, hopefully not right with Jack Ivankovich, then they
know that Jacob Gibbons can come in and do the job,
which he did a great job of on Friday, so
kudos to that. But I seemed like, uh, you know, Ottawa,
they're playing like a just lining up everybody in the
back of the blue line and saying, all right, if
you guys can beat us, okay, go ahead, come, you know,
(06:39):
come come get us, like a wall every time the
Steelers would come up. So Dave Cameron structure, That's what
I have to say. And it was kind of shutting
down the Steelers in the beginning.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
You had talked about it, actually, we were talking about
in the broadcast booth, how you were saying, you know,
they were kind of playing like a defensive structure through
the neutral So yeah, so it again kind of maybe
uh surprised them or shut them down a little bit
in the beginning of the game. But they did a
great job of you know, fighting through that and picking
up a big two points and had a big you know,
(07:11):
three out of possible four points over the over the weekend, and.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
I thought against too, uh, if it wasn't for two turnovers,
it was two turnover, two turnovers, two goals. Pretty much
the Steelers turn to puck over, right, If they didn't
turn the puck over against the saganaw spirit, they had
that they had that game wrapped up. I thought, because
they outplayed Sagana, they all played them in their zone,
they out played them whatnot. So you know your thoughts
(07:37):
about that too.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Yeah, I thought in that game that they they did
have played them in multiple facets of the of the game.
And you know, sometimes it just doesn't come to fruition
with uh.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
With the win.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
So for the steel EDGs, I mean, you get into overtime. Again,
we've talked about just the the overtime struggles that they
had a season ago, kind of rearing dire ugly head
a little bit in the in the over I'm framed there. Yeah,
you lost to yeah five seconds in Christian Epson scores,
But but you look at the you look at the shots,
I mean, thirty one to twenty one. I think Brampton,
you know, held held the offensive zone time probably for
(08:13):
the for the majority of that game. So again it's A.
It's good kind of three points to get back into
it after after losing three straight going into the weekend.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
All right, so let's take a break. When we come back,
we'll have our special guests, Spencer Solva, assistant Captain of
your Brampton Steelheads, and you'll hear from him, and we
come back right here a true talk on Saga nine
sixty A. Welcome back to trout talk right here in
Saga and I sixty eight. I might carefu lead us
along with Brendan Lang, and we'd like to bring in
(08:44):
our special guests, sistant captain of your Brampton Steelheads defenseman.
And there he is the man, Spencer Solva, a million
dollars smile. Let's rock and roll over there. All right, Spencer,
first off, let's start off. How you doing.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
I'm doing great. I just had a good practice today
and uh kind of laying low for the rest of
the night, so I can't complain.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
That's great.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
We were just talking a little bit about before you
came on the the past two games this weekend. So
of course, going into the weekend, you know, riding a
three game losing streak, how'd you hawd you feel about
the weekend and obviously breaking that on on Friday and
then ultimately coming up short against Saga out there on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Yeah, I mean, it was obviously good to to break
the losing streak. You know, you you kind of never
want to go down that rabbit hole as a team,
and it was definitely uh good to snap that this weekend.
And you know, three out of four points going into
(09:46):
coming out of that weekend going into the next. So
pretty positive from from all the guys in the room.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Okay, so let's how was practice this week so far?
I mean, if you guys been yelling at each other,
screaming at each other, you know, all that kind of
stuff in a positive of way, talk about practice.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
I think I got you there. Uh yeah, it was
pretty pretty positive this week. We uh, you know, the guys,
the guys are all head up high, and you know,
we've had had a good week with just you know,
chemistry and stuff, and no one's really being too hard
(10:26):
on themselves. So I think we're really positive going into
this weekend.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
And as a as a leader, of course, you know,
you get brought over in the off season from from
the Eerie Otters and and named to the to the
leadership group as an assistant captain this year at the Steelheads. Uh,
you know, when you are going through maybe a stretch
like that early on in the season, and as an
older guy in the league as well, what what kind
of maybe insights are you providing to to guys on
the team when maybe you're going through those Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
I think it's just kind of you know, don't think
about the last game and just focus on, uh, you know,
the task at hand. And I feel like, you know,
when when we do that as a group, you know,
we did our our last game, we won, and it
was kind of just all focus on on the next shift,
the next play, and uh, no one was really kind
(11:17):
of thinking about mistakes they made earlier or anything like that.
It was just, uh, you know, good good chemistry throughout
the whole room. And you know, that's that's what it
takes to be an elite team, just you know, keep
going shift by shift.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
So all right, Spencer, So you were at New Jersey
Deviles camp. Uh in the off season. Uh, talk about
what you learned from there and what you can bring
back from the Devil's camp, you know, to the guys,
to the team and whatnot. Uh.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
Yeah, I think just how to be a pro and
how to treat other people and treat your teammates and
treat your body as well. I think, uh, there's a
lot of great tips that you know, they they've given me,
and obviously the other NHL camps I've been to, I've
learned a lot from from those teams as well, And
(12:04):
you know, I think it's, uh, it's good for guys
who haven't been in that situation before to to kind
of get knowledge through me. I'm kind of like the
middleman there.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
But.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Obviously, uh, at that level, it's it's tough to me.
You know, Thankfully I've I've seen kind of the insides
of it and how it works, and I think it's
definitely great to uh to bring those kind of corners
back to the group.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
So and of course being in in New Jersey camp
this past year and you just said, you know, you've
been to three different campsry with the Leafs the year
before that. Are there like big differences between the three
that you went to or are they all pretty similar?
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Like how does that kind of look?
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (12:47):
Yeah, they're all different in uh in their own way.
But I guess that's just how how teams how the
teams are ran and stuff. But they were all great,
like unbelievable experiences my so many new guys and made
a lot of friendships along the way. So yeah, I
mean they were all great.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
So you were a captain of course with the Eerie
Artist before he came over, and you got the A
with the Brampton steel Heads, well deserved of course. Uh
So to me, I don't know, like, you're not the
are you like a raw, raw kind of assistant captain
you know, hey, let's go, or are you the type
of guy you know, like they just show on the
ice kind of thing? Because to me, you're like, I'm
going to call you the side of assassin from now on.
(13:30):
You just you're you're all business, right, So talk about that.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
Yeah, I'm I'll honestly be vocal, you know, and when
I need to be. But you know, I think I
think I show a lot of leaderships through just my
play and I practice habits and and how hard I
work in the gym and stuff like that, and to
try to lead by example. So and you know, when
(13:55):
it's when it's game time, it's all business for me,
and I want to do everything I can to to
help the team win, and you know, obviously I I
bring kind of that experience now being an older guy
in the team and uh so just trying to try
to be a leader. Uh in that sort of aspect, I'd.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
Say, because you know what when you work out, my gosh,
like you got your legs are like this, and I'm like,
what does this guy do? Just like the soul like,
I think to myself, Thank God, I gotta I gotta
ask this guy what he does in the gym. But
we'll talk about that another time. My goodness.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
Yeah, yeah, I just just all hard work.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
So good for you, man, you look like a million bucks. Sorry,
Brendan started cut.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
It's all good. I want to go. I want to
go back to the trade a little bit with uh
with the erie of course, and being a captain there.
I mean, how difficult was that?
Speaker 3 (14:48):
I mean you were the leader as the captain last
year of horse assistant captain the year before that. Obviously
really close with a lot of the guys there. So
what was the experience like getting traded?
Speaker 4 (14:58):
Yeah, I mean the captain c and eerie. It felt
it felt very right to me. I felt like I
could do really well with that role, and I feel
like I did a great job of connecting our group
and and kind of growing as a team. And obviously
when I got traded, uh, you know, I'll miss all
(15:19):
the guys there. Their their friendships will have for life.
But you know it, stuff like that happens, and I
think it's I think it's really great that I got
picked up by Brampton, And you know, I was, I
was super excited because I know all the young talent
we have here and I I knew some of the
(15:40):
guys over the summer, like met a couple of them
when I was up here in Toronto, And yeah, it
was it was great, And you know, the transition is
really easy for me. All the guys on the team
are unreal. Uh, the staff here is great and yeah,
absolutely no complaints, and it was it was a really
easy transition for me, which which I really appreciate from
(16:03):
from all the guys and the staff.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
So some people might forget this, Spencer, but you played
with Team Canada UA team from twenty twenty one twenty
twenty two. Talk about that experience.
Speaker 4 (16:15):
Yeah, that was a that was a great experience. It
was obviously my my first time representing my country. And
you know, we we had some problems during COVID and stuff.
I wish some other events and stuff didn't get canceled,
but you know what happens, and and uh so I
(16:35):
was I was really pumped to go. And we had
a really good team, uh, you know, playing with players
like Badar, Fantilly and some of those guys who are
just unreal. And it was an honor for me to
get named assistant captain obviously for Dard captain and Fintilly
the other assistant. And and the tournament didn't really go
(16:57):
the way we wanted. We lost in the core and
over time, but you know, stuff like that happens, and
and you know, you can't go back and change that.
But uh, it was a really good group of guys
and I had blasts over there in Germany, and yeah,
it was an experience I'll never forget Germany.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Yeah, talk about the experience being in Germany. I've never
been to Germany either. What's yeah, what's it like over there?
Speaker 4 (17:22):
Yeah, It's it's crazy how much different Europe is is
to hear it was we were in Lands to Germany
and and the uh yeah, every everything just feels like
so much more slow down over there. And uh, you know,
more calm, people aren't as busy. And yeah, it was
just good, great experience.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
So yeah, that's the way people are in Europe, right
They're just like they're so happy just to be live.
They wake up in the morning, they go out, good morning.
It's just like you right now. That's yeah, all right.
So we're gonna circle back a little bit here. We're
gonna get to know Spencer Solva a little bit. We
like to keep things little bit light here in this podcast.
You know, a lot of podcasts are very very serious
(18:03):
and whatnot, but we were serious, but we could be.
We joke around at the same time. So, Spencer, what
is the favorite thing you'd like to do in the
off season.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
I'm a big golfer. I love the golf. I think
that and the town I live in is, uh, we're
we're on the water. So we get up in the
boat a lot and wakesurf, wakeboard and all that stuff,
so that that kind of keeps me busy over the summer.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
You get out of the boat a lot do you fish?
Is fishing on there?
Speaker 1 (18:39):
I did?
Speaker 4 (18:39):
I didn't fish this summer. I did. I did once actually,
but I know a lot of a lot of my
cousins stuff are big fishermen, so I always see them
doing it, and I'd love to go. I just every
time we go out there. I'm just addicted to the
to the wakesurfing. So that's that's kind of my go to.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
If you could travel the one place in the world,
one place, where would it be. I'll tell you my
place first, the North Pole. Go ahead, just to see
what it's like. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
Yeah, a town called North Pole, Alaska, And like the
street lights are candy canes and everything and it's actually
it's really funny.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
But shout out to Canvan Cycle. I played minor hockey
with them. But any place in the world, I don't know.
I I like being in like the mountains and stuff.
I'd say probably like New Zealand would be a sick
place to be. Yeah, surf and stuff and it's beautiful there,
(19:51):
and that's definitely something on my bucket list where a
place I would want to go to.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Yeah, No, that'ld be an interesting place for sure.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
No.
Speaker 3 (19:58):
I was just wondering how you got started playing hockey,
like as a kid, was it uh, were your parents
into hockey? Was it something new for the family, Like
how how did you get into it?
Speaker 4 (20:08):
Got you? Yeah, I think my my dad played hockey
when he was when he was little, he didn't play.
Uh he didn't play into his like teen years or anything.
But I mean in in Windsor, it's kind of like
a hockey town, and so they my parents just put
(20:30):
me in super young. I think when my brother started,
I started as well, so I kind of got an
early jump on on some of the kids my age.
But yeah, they just put me in in and I
fell in love with with hockey and you know, never
kind of looked at anything else. That was just my
main sport. And you know, as as much as I
(20:51):
could be on the ice, I I'd love to be
out there shooting pucks in my driveway and everything like that.
So yeah, I just kind of fell in love super young.
And uh, definitely was something that I knew from a
young age I wanted to pursue. So so when you.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Were when you were traded, your feelings right now? Okase,
when you're traded here to Brampton, I just want to
know your feelings about the team right now? Is it
you know when you're trading, like, is this the a
team that you feel that can go all the way.
Speaker 4 (21:22):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
Other teams that you've played on, I.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
Do one hundred.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
You know.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
I I believe in this group heavily, you know it.
It didn't even take me a week to realize how
how special this group is. And you know, I think
we have a lot of hype around our group. So
you know, we're gonna get other teams best every night
and so so that's gonna be tough for us, but
(21:48):
I think we're we're figuring out how to handle that.
You know, I think we we may have been in
a bit of a slump, but I don't think that'll
affect us at all. I feel like, if anything, it's
going to make a strong longer as a group. And
you know, I'm I'm really positive and uh, you know
our our play so far, and you know, I think
(22:10):
we just keep getting better every game. And I think
some some of the guys in our team don't realize
how special we are. And but I think that'll change
pretty soon. Like we are, our group is so tight
and so close that I don't think we'll have an
issue at all going down the road playing games, you know,
(22:31):
connecting chemistry, all that stuff, And you know, I truly
believe we can be a powerhouse.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
So, and you had mentioned a little bit earlier on
about the coming to the team and everybody being welling welcoming.
You talked about the staff as well. What's uh, what's
it been like playing for James Richmond and working with
match here Tana as well as the as the defense coach.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
Yeah, it's been great. I love I love Jr's approach
to the game, and you know, the systems we play
and it allows for for the defense to to kind
of be up and play as well, which which I like.
And I think Maddie's done a great job with the
(23:13):
development and everything and Jarr as well. You know, our
our skill development has been great, Our systems work has
been unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
You know, every day I feel like I'm getting better
with with those guys and and and they're great people
as well. Uh. You know, I feel like I can
go talk to any of the coaches whenever I want stuff,
and and they're really open to me and which which
I love, and so I'm I'm really thankful for for that.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
Yeah, You've walked into a great situation here. Uh wow.
I mean, you know, I'm gonna ask you the same question.
I think that I asked Carson the Razor Breatcroft. So
because you're do the team, so you play for you know,
you play for Stan Butler, of course, and now you
play for James Richmond. So what are the coaching styles like?
(24:07):
What are what's different about the coaching styles?
Speaker 4 (24:12):
I don't know. I think, uh, I think there's just
more movement in our style of play. You know, the
we go from I go from playing a one two
two to a two one two, which now I have
to be more gapped up and not kind of play
a trap or anything like that. And so I I
(24:34):
like that because uh, I'm a I like to think
I'm a good skater sos buzz around, yeah, and which
which I like? And you know, I I like both
coaching styles. You know, Stan Butler was a great coach,
a great guy to me, and all the staff in
Erie was was so kind and respectful, and you know,
(24:57):
I can't thank them enough for for what they've done
for me. But yeah, I just think it's it's a
good change and in in the style of play. And
you know, I really like playing our systems and stuff,
and uh yeah, I enjoyed a lot and.
Speaker 3 (25:15):
One part of the system that you had said there
too is getting the defense up and involved offensively, and
that's obviously a huge part of your game now. Is
that the way that you've always played? Was there a
coach that kind of got you more doing that?
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Like, how did that work?
Speaker 1 (25:28):
I love watching you skate before you go the question
for sure? Go ahead?
Speaker 4 (25:33):
Oh yeah, thank you. Yeah, I've I've kind of always
played that way. You know, if if I get caught
up in the play or something, you know, I just
trust my skating to get me back. And so I
I feel like I can recover a lot once I
get up there. And I also like like leading the
(25:54):
rush and you know, kind of breaking into the zone.
Speaker 1 (26:01):
Last question for me for me Spencer Souls, is you
know what do you have any I've never seen? Like,
I know, do you have any superstitions before the game,
Because I was gonna say, I see you running a lot,
So do you have like a thing where you run
like three laps and you stop for three and a
half or something.
Speaker 4 (26:16):
Oh, you know, you know what. I every when I
get to the rink, I hop in the shower and
kind of reset, uh, kind of feel fresh for the
game and always take my stick the same way, roll out,
do the same you know, reps on on the rollout
(26:37):
and same stretches before the game. And then yeah, I
run back to the room because I have a heat
pack on my back, so I gotta go take that off,
come back in my sweater. And then once I get
too hot in my sweater, I run back, put a
T shirt on, and then I'm ready to go for
a warm up. That's why I'm running back and forth.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
But yeah, okay, yeah, you're a running machine man.
Speaker 4 (27:01):
Yeah yeah, bluss us the legs and stuff too, so
why not you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
That's awesome all right, Spencer, thank you so much for
coming on and on trou Talk, and of course we'll
have you on during the season, more and more and more.
The seasons just begun. It's so young. Are you doing
a great job out there? Keep up with the workouts
and those legs. You got to keep those legs nice
to pump my goodness me and thanks for coming on.
Speaker 4 (27:29):
Yeah, thanks, thanks, guys, really appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
Have a good one. All right. So that was Spencer
Solva of your Brampton Steelheads. We'll talk about that interview
when we come back right here on Saga nine sixty AM.
All right, welcome back to trout Talk. Right here in
Saga nine sixty AM. Mike care for lead us along
with Brendan Lang. We're both broadcasters of the Brampton Steelheads.
(27:52):
We're just talking to Spencer Solva, newly acquired from the
Eerie Otters this off season. And uh, I'm gonna say this,
Brendan pro another pro.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
Yeah, definitely, Like you said, I think that's a great
word to describe him too. Is a pro and and
he's been to three different NHL camps, so that helps
so much just to see the habits and what goes
on in those types of scenarios and seeing it in
different organizations as well. I think is also something that
would definitely help create that kind of pro feeling that
(28:28):
we get talking to to Spencer there, and like you said,
you know it helps on the ice and off the
ice go into these kind of camps. So I do
think that it's he is such a great addition to
the team. Of course, when you look at the defense,
core Chas Sharp going out the door, who was a
huge piece of the team of season ago, the captain
Overager and then bringing in Spencer sova to help on
(28:49):
the ice of course, but also help in the room
as well, and Chas Sharp is a big part of
that being in the room, part of the part of
the leadership group of course, as the captain. When he spoke,
everybody listened. So that is kind of now following into
into the shoes here with with Spencer SOA.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
Yeah, you can totally see that with them. Yeah, he's uh,
you know, he's a quiet leader, as he said, but
when he speaks up, he speaks up and you can
and that's why he's been a captain. And you know,
he's a guy that played U with Eric with thea
Dard and he played with Antilly he played my goodness,
and that the EU eighteen twenty twenty twenty twenty two
season assistant captain. I mean, if your assistant captain over there,
(29:27):
and he's always been assistant captain and assistant well deserved.
I mean, he's such a good kid and his skating
is unbelievable, his defense is unbelievable. Season is so young,
he's already got eight points in eight games, right, I mean.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Pretty good, I'd say, so good.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
Yeah, all right, so let's move on. Brendan HL top
ten just came out. We'll go through the Ohl teams
right now. Brankton Steelheads sitting in third, Winter spitfires in six.
This is a CHL, folks, not the OL top ten.
So just to say, in eight, the London Nights, nine,
the Niagara Ice Dogs. Still hanging around. That honeymoon still
(30:05):
hanging around if you ask me, so, uh, that's an
extended honeymoon. But anyways, it's like Zach Brennan, any any
surprises in that, What do you think?
Speaker 3 (30:14):
I don't necessarily think so. I think it's probably fair
that the Steelers have dropped a little bit in the.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
CHL rankings, you know.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
I mean they had a pretty good weekend and they're
starting to get things back on track, and I would
expect them to definitely move up the rankings, you know,
going forward. I think that that's definitely in the cards
for them. So I wouldn't say there's anything really surprising
on here. When you look at the OHL teams, Winsor
has been a force to be reckoned with early on
in the year. I mean, their offense is just scoring
at a crazy rate right now, So they move up
(30:44):
into sixth place. I think that that's pretty fair. London
still hanging around that top ten, and you know they're
always going to be around there, so that's understandable. The
Ice Dog's the one I say it's surprising just because
of where the Ice Dogs you know, have been in
the past few years. But the start they've gotten off
to you, I think they're definitely worthy.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Of being in that being in that station. Yeah, well
right now, of course.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
But that's of course, and that's what the rankings are for,
is right this moment. I'm not saying they're going to
be there at the end of the year right now,
right now, right now, and you really have to give
them a lot of credit. I feel like I've said
that quite a bit on yes, but you do play well, yeah,
I mean, and not to say that that it lasts
the whole year.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
But just to be able to come out and start
the year the way they have, I got to get
off to this start after the last few years is
obviously really big for that organization.
Speaker 1 (31:35):
Good for them, exactly, good for them. You know what
Bruce Boudrow seems like he's doing. Bruce Boudreau, Ben Boudrow
or Bruce's sign doing a great job coaching over there,
so good for them. They're sitting in ninth right now
in the Ohl top ten. Kevin, he's having a big
year we talking about, so good for them. They're staying Hey,
two weeks in a row, they're in the top ten.
Speaker 2 (31:52):
So yeah, good for them.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
Good for them. Let's see how long the honeymoon stays
for if it is a honeymoon or if it's actually
a marriage. I don't know if that makes sense, that
makes sense, Yeah, I think it makes sense.
Speaker 6 (32:04):
Yeah, yeah, okay, all right, so let's talk about Okay,
back to the Steelers, of course, so we all know,
you know what, We all know that Carson, Raycoff, MacDonell,
and Martona have done a great job up front.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
I just feel that they need that secondary scoring. Brendan,
and we talked about this on the broadcast and whatnot
during the intermissions. In your mind, I'll start off with you,
I guess, and then I'll move it on to me
who needs to And now it's early, but who needs
to step up?
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (32:38):
I mean it's it is tough to say because it
is so early on in the year and you expect,
you know, everybody is still kind of getting in the
swing of things a little bit. But I think just
going off of past years and guys that I think
are are big cogs in the in the wheel of
the Steelers team, and then guys that I think will
definitely produce as the year goes on and maybe just
(33:00):
has taken them a little bit longer to get into group.
I think if you look at somebody like Mason Zebeski,
who's been huge for this team in the past, he's
kind of moved. He played on the second line a
little bit last year, he's in the top six a
little bit. Now with the talent they have, he's moved
into the bottom six. He's been playing a lot with
Jack van Voltsen and Adams Alicky on that third line.
(33:21):
I think maybe that's why you see the production taking
a little bit of a hit because he's kind of
moved out of that role that he was in before.
So he's a name that I think will start to
produce here going forward, and when he does, that'll be
massive for the Steelens. I think, you know, kind of
also in that same conversations is Jack van Olson, who
will probably be in there even a Kieren Wakowski now
(33:41):
in his second year you know, there's guys where I
think that we will start to see that here as
we get a little bit further into the year.
Speaker 1 (33:50):
That's perfect, that's perfect analysis right there. You know what
after the first game against the Branford Goldogs, you know,
seven different scorer, the secondary scoring was there absolutely destroyed
domination of the Branford Bulldogs. So they're gonna need that again.
They're gonna need that scoring to coming. You know what,
It's gonna come in bunches. But you know, Van Voltson's
gonna have to be more. In my my opinion, consistent
(34:10):
consistency is the key man. Voltson's gonna have to be consistent.
Carl Miras is gonna have to be consistent, even though
Carl miras Is two way game is unbelievable, right, Uh,
it's a beskie. He needs to get back to where
he was last year. And uh he's getting them. He's
getting that. I thought he had a really strong weekend
actually against and Autawa, So he's getting their big time.
I think he's Uh, I think they're just do. I
(34:31):
think uh they're I think they're gonna be just fine.
Actually with the second game.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
No, I agree, I personally agree.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
Yeah, just right now, they're a little bit of a lull,
and that's gonna happen, right.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
Yeah, we talked about it before, not just not just
like winning and losing games, but but players on the
roster as well. You're gonna go through that at different
times of year. Uh. And and this just happens to
kind of be near the beginning of the year. But again,
like I said, I don't have any doubts that the
names that I mentioned or anybody else will produce the
year goes on. It just has, you know, maybe going
not to a little bit of a slow start exactly.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
That's all it is, is a slow start. And yeah,
I expect too. I expecte Beskie to step up. I
expect Luke Misa to step up. Luke Mesa, Yeah, Luke
Misa is gonna get up there. They're gonna be just
fine with the secondary scoring. And when they do, if
it's like they if they get back to which we're confident,
they're going to look out everybody. This is why this
team is ranked number three in the country. So if
(35:27):
there's any doubters out there, how about this, You come
down to the CAAA Center and check it out and
be the judge for yourself. So yes, I recommend that.
I recommend that. All right, So let's see up the
next games here, my friend Barry coming up Friday night,
and you're gonna be on the call in that one,
and I'll be working color with you and looking forward
(35:47):
to that first, and we'll talk about that game first
and go off on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
Yeah. So, so the Barry came. It's it's kind of funny.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
I mean, they I feel like they play them every
other day.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
It's crazy.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
Yes, well, yeah, third time in October that we're going
to see them play against the Barry Coles. Both times
have been in Berry, so this is the first time
Barry's going to becoming of Granton. They win the first one,
Barry was kind of shorthanded, isn't really the same team
that we saw or that we will see coming up
this week, and then they were at full strength the
last time the steel has played them in Barry. So
(36:19):
I think that that game is probably a better barometer
of what's going to be kind of going on in
this in this game coming up, I think for the Steelheads,
you know, it's it's all about starting the game fast,
which they've done here recently, but then kind of just
sustaining that a little bit, you know, into the game.
I think that that's maybe where where it's been lost
a little bit. The starts are good and then there's
(36:41):
a little bit of a lull and they let the
team back into it. So I think that that just
kind of sustaining the energy. And when we talk to
James Richmond, that's kind of what he said, you know,
he just wants to see more fight, more pace with
the team playing with and also having jack ivan Govic
in the net is going to be huge to get
him back in the goal. Of course, the last time
they faced off, Jacob Gibbons wasn't gold and he played
(37:03):
pretty well. He was I think it was fifty one
to fifty two shots that fifty three okay, yeah, fifty
three shots that Barry threw at him.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
So to allow four goals.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
You know, forty nine, sayes, I would take that. But
still just just having your number one guy back in
there is going to.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
Give you a little more confidence as well. And yeah,
I think that's gonna be huge for them on Friday.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
This is a huge rivalry, absolutely huge rivalry, right, I mean,
both teams know what they're going to bring to each other,
you know what I mean, like Branford or Branford. Barry
knows what Brampton's gonna bring. Brampton knows what Barry's gonna bring.
Two great coaches, Marty Williamson James Richmond head to head.
(37:44):
It doesn't get any better than that for Friday Night.
I think the key to that game is going to
have to be the compete level, because you know that
Barry's gonna come out flying and they usually always do
again and against against anybody. Right now, with the team
that they have, they added Dollan Wakeley, they added Brad Gardner. Uh,
(38:04):
we're Tucci my goodness, they already have Bode Wan up there, right,
so Hison in the back end. Okay, So, and don't
forget the way it ended last time with getting a
two game suspension with a little bit of unnecessarily punches
on Porto Martone. I didn't understand that.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
Yeah, they were kind of going at it all game
and then it just spoiled over at the end. But
this is going to be his first game back from suspension.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
To its right, right. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
I think they'll you know, they'll probably get requainted.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
Yeah, Yeah, these teams don't like each other, folks, we're
trying to say they don't like each other. But I
think the key is competitive. I think the key is
compete level. They got to compete. They got to compete
every four lines. They got to be really, really really
really playing well against this Barity team, because you know
they're going to bring it and bring the physicality against
this Bary team and they should be Okay, yeah, completely,
(39:00):
all right, So let's move on gwelf Storm and that's
going to be coming up on Troutta right after trout
Talk at four pm. Actually, it's gonna be a four
pm start from the Sleeman Center in Gwelph. Gwelf Storm.
It's a team that doesn't have Jet Luchenko right now,
who's still in Philadelphia fly with the Flyers, and apparently
John Tortorella absolutely loves him. So yeah, so I'm not
(39:23):
sure if he's gonna be coming back. Let's just say that.
And you know, here's a team. Here's a team, Brennan,
here's the team. Sorry, here's a team. It's been kind
of snaked it the last couple of years, right, yeah,
patros last year stays with the Bruins. And now Luchenko,
another one of their best players, stays with Guelph. But
it's gonna be a tough one for the steal Arts
because it's tough to play over there. Number one, Number two.
(39:46):
Cory Stillman's a good coach, heck of a coach, and
he's got a really good coaching staff, and they got
a really good, young, hardworking team, and they're big, they've
got a good goaltender and Gillespie over there. So it's
gonna be tough. But I think the still that should
be okay in that game. But well, what do you think?
Speaker 3 (40:03):
Yeah, I mean it's no, no, Yeah, it's a it's
a bit of a bit of a slow start for
Gwelph this year. I think probably most people thought that
they'd be a little bit better to start the year,
but like you said, they have been a little bit
sagment with some of their guys staying in NHL camps
probably longer than they are maybe not just camps, even
Potter's staying there last year, you know, and and now
(40:24):
Jett lu Chanko playing into the season with with Philadelphia,
with guys that they probably didn't necessarily think we're going
to be spending as much time in NHL as as
they are and Luchanko, like you said, I mean, it
seems like John Tortorella absolutely loves him. So that's got
to be pretty cool for the guy. You know, you
go up there, you're a young player, you get a
shot to play, and John Tortorella, who's a you know,
(40:44):
as from all accounts, a very good coach, a very
hard coach to play for. Uh, yeah, you must be
doing something right that John Tortorella is complimenting you. But yeah,
so that's got to be pretty cool for him. But
but yeah, the Gulf Storm, you know, they've gone out
to a little bit of a start this year, and
and if you're the Steelheads, you just you have to
capitalize on that. And then you just have to you know,
(41:07):
realize that again it hasn't been how Gwelf kind of
saw it shaking out early on in the year and
just really continue to I don't want to say kick
them while they're down, but but kind of like that,
I mean, like you just got it. Like you said,
it's it's similar. You just have to bring a lot
of energy.
Speaker 1 (41:21):
Gwel.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
It's a tough tough place to play. So going in
there bringing energy, scoring early is a good way to
you know, get the crowd out of it, and that's
going to go a long way in that game.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
Yeah, gwel's they're coming on. So they're going to be
coming off to three and three on Saturday. They're going
to be playing the Barry Colts and then at home
against the steel Lights. So I guess that's hope that
Barry you know, takes a little life out of them,
I guess, as you can say, and then we jump
all over them because we're not playing on Saturday. So
the actually we have the day off in the rink
on Saturday, which is kind of weird. Huh does not
(41:53):
feel good? Tell you that? I don't know, and in
a good way. I mean, you know, everybody deserves a day,
that's right. Yeah, Oh my goodness, Brendon like all right, right,
all right, my man, So you know, life tips, let's
get the life.
Speaker 2 (42:13):
Oh sorry, before we get to lifetimes, you want to
talk quickly about the.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
Oh preliminary Yeah, goodness, I totally forgot. Excuse me, ladies
and gentlemen. Okay, So the preliminary HL preliminary Central Scouting
list just came out Porter Martone, no surprise, is an
A and two other players are on there.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
Brendan, Yeah, Porter Martone is an A.
Speaker 3 (42:34):
You see Jack Ivan Covid as well in the in
the B category, and I think that's probably fair. You know,
I do think he's the best goalie in the draft,
and and I goalies it's it's tough to go first.
I know we saw that with a scar of in
Nashville a little while ago, but but most of the time,
you don't see goalies getting drafted in the first round.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (42:53):
So I see you know, the B ranking as being
pretty uh pretty on point. Seeing in the in the
third rounds, I think we definitely see Aving Covid going.
Speaker 2 (43:02):
In that range.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (43:04):
Lucas careers as well. On the list, I think he's
a C ranking, so that's around like the fifth round. Again,
I think that that's probably a pretty fair ranking. And
again these are early rankings, like they're gonna change as
the season goes on. And then you also have Gabe
Sharad and Luke Traguzka in there as well. Uh and
and they're ranked in that like sixth seventh round range.
(43:24):
So quite a few guys. You had quite a few
guys drafted last year by the Stelings, and I think
it's gonna be it's gonna be the same this year.
Speaker 1 (43:31):
And again that's just like kudos to James Richmond and staff,
like just again producing producing NHL talent. Guys are getting
drafted every single year and that's what it's all about,
developing and winning as well. But I think you know,
he's he's the best at developing him in his staff.
And I'll keep saying this all the time, like he's
(43:51):
he's he's a I think Carson Raykov said, at best,
he's a players coach at the same time, he's tough
at the same time, right, and he's always been good
to us, so to say, so, yeah, yeah, he's he's
a he's a man's man. And I'll keep saying.
Speaker 3 (44:07):
That, Yeah, he's You're right with the development aspect of it,
it's it's definitely true also too. We we didn't mention,
but porter of our tone and Jack avan Covid announced
to the roster for the first uh US.
Speaker 2 (44:19):
Yeah, can't the CHL.
Speaker 3 (44:20):
Against the United States Development Program that's gonna be played
a little later on.
Speaker 2 (44:25):
Here, so the first iteration of it.
Speaker 3 (44:27):
So it's pretty cool to see you guys from the
from the Steelers to get named to that roster.
Speaker 1 (44:30):
That's awesome. I think they're gonna do just fine. Like
you imagine, Jack just shuts him out against the US
National Development Program. You know, here's a guy, actually, the
guy what's his name at person? He came from there,
right from Sagan he did, Yeah, he came from anyways. Yeah,
that should be awesome. I mean porter, he should, he
should dominate that game. I think in my in my mind,
(44:52):
I think Jack's gonna be just fine. Yeah, great accomplishment
for those two. Yeah, and for the guys that are
on the Central Scouting List. And as you mentioned, you know,
car Mirrors, Dray Rusica and company. Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable. So
good for them, and I'm sure they're gonna get dropped
it just the beginning, folks. They can move up. Hey,
they can move up.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (45:13):
All right. So one last thing, one life tip, and
then we're going to wrap it up, all right. So
I have to say this, So that dog in the
backyard that I was talking about that Jess go crazy,
well apparently it's been replaced with a little chuhuahua or something.
So now at nighttime instead of the big bark, right,
instead of the big bark at nighttime. Now, I hear
a little bark something in the backyard. Yeah, it's crazy, honestly,
(45:41):
that's all I hear.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
And so they've just like they've switched swap dogs.
Speaker 1 (45:46):
That's what seems like. I don't know. It's up on
the same spot going on to me, and they.
Speaker 2 (45:51):
Don't break their dog inside it for like fifteen minutes.
Speaker 1 (45:56):
Yeah, it's bad. It's bad. We don't know what's going on.
All right, you got any you got anything? Oh?
Speaker 2 (46:02):
I think we need get the dog updated.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
Yeah, but keep you come on, folks, I mean, don't
keep your dog outside so anyways, because that's bad. I'm
a dog.
Speaker 2 (46:13):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 1 (46:16):
Anything Brendan, Oh no, no, no, all right, is that
gonna do it? For this episode of trout Talk right
here in Saga nine sixty am, or if you're watching
on YouTube, So for my partner Brendan Lang, I might
care forelitish stay tuned after at four pm Gulf Storm
(46:37):
and the Brampton Steel that's coming up. We'll see you
next time.
Speaker 4 (46:40):
Book
