Jack van Volsen on the show in a moment. We
have lots to talk about with the three and three
(01:34):
this past weekend. Also with three and three coming up
this weekend coming up, so lots of steelheads hockey to
look at the review to look forward to. But before
we get to that, Mikey, how was how was your week?
How are you doing? How the how have all the
things been?
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Good?
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Everything's good, you know, just wheeling through every days, like
I said, like groundog day you wake up. You know,
I keep saying, you know, saying this pretty much every episode,
do the same thing all the time, and and lots
of hockey on the weekend and stuff like that. So yeah,
we joined my actually we just step in the right direction.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
My son.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
He's got to be skating for the first time finally,
so we're looking forward to that. And that starts in January,
so yeah, we had to get a cage for him
and all that. So he's excited. So it should be good.
And uh yeah, that's about it pretty much.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Cool could to hear he's getting on the ice.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
Yeah, it's been a while, it's been a while, right,
but yeah, uh well whatever, you know, he's six now,
he's just turned six, better than late than ever, so
he's looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
So it should be good.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
It's awesome, so definitely good to get the skating lessons
in first, you know, and then.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Sure, yeah, if he likes it then yeah, if he
likes it, then we're going to keep him kind of thing, right,
I mean, if it was up to me, I'd not
force him, but i'd be like all over, I'd be
all over. Omkay, no, stay on the ice and stuff.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
But you know you can't do that to the kids, right.
If if he likes it, then then we'll keep him
in it.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
So yeah, I'm sure. I'm sure you're looking forward to
it as well.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah I can't wait. Oh man, Yeah, looking rarely looking
forward to it.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yeah, I mean for me, it's it's been. It's been
similar as well. Of course, like you said, lots of
lots of hockey going on. Of course we have, like
I mentioned the three and the reason you you got
your first overnight trip out of the way on the weekend.
How is the bus ride up to you up the
North Bay?
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, No, it was all right.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
I mean, uh, it was a quick turnaround, right, I
mean we left right after the game against Sarnia and
then uh hit the bus trail there up Highway eleven
I think it is, and something like that. So we
made it at a good time, got to the got
to the hotel at a good time, got to the
arena at a good time, and uh, you know, honestly,
right right in the room and right to right to sleep,
you know, one hour after that, and stayed up an
(03:45):
hour and a half maybe watched it I think Vancouver
and who was playing, Houver I can't even remember his
playing at Saturday night.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Oh Vancouver and Sane was a that's what was playing.
Speaker 5 (03:53):
So I watched a little bit of that.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
And then right to sleep, got up and then boomed
me right at the arena again at the North Bay
Memorial Gardens.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
So uh yeah, the.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
Memorial Gardens for a boy, those fans are really really hardcore,
let's just say that.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
So it was kind of cool though, hey for the.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Old Brampton battalion going up, going back to you know,
North Day battalion kind of thing, So that's kind of cool.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
So yeah, it was, it was good, It was okay.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
And well, I guess we can get into that now.
Of course, the steel Heads do end up winning that
game in overtime. Another big, big goal from Adam Zidlicky,
who's been playing amazing recently and really all year. I mean,
he's been one of the guys. I mean, of course
you talked about the top line that drives a ton
of the offense, but outside of that, he's he's been
(04:38):
the guy. And we know when he's playing that straight
line game, he's got so much speed and that's when
he's at his best. And I mean he's been that
way pretty much the entire season. So we'll get to
that game, but first we'll talk about the first game
against North Bay that was on Friday night and the
Steelheads they came out, they came out a little slow,
but then they really ended up taking it to the
battalion and it was it was a big seven to
(04:59):
two win.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Yeah, i'd say so, I mean dismantling of the battalion,
I guess you could say.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
But uh, now, yeah, exactly like you said. You know,
the first.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Goal, it was what North Bay got the first goal.
Then after that, you know, uh, they started off slowly,
the North Bay got the first goal. Then after that
it was just like, you know, all of a sudden,
they just turned into another team, the team that we
that we know in love, right, and they just came
out and dominated them after that. So I guess we'll
get to all the stats and all that kind of
stuff later on.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
But wow, uh, what a what a what a game,
What a game that was.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
And it was a great game for Troy Patton of course,
scoring his first OHL goal. Congratulations to him, Uh, coming
down and beating Charlie the Rock to the glove side.
So uh, congraduations that kids. One of the most humblest
kids with former Barry Junior Coult that you'll ever meet.
So yeah, we you know, it's just quiet.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
You never know.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
He's he's a hardcore, uh you know, a fighter too
and all that, and he got a fighter study.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
We'll get into that after. Yeah, he did.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
He did against his right or carry. I mean those
two probably know each other. Right to carry he played,
I believe for the Oakville Rangers. The top of my head,
I think it's there. So those two probably knew each
other and they they boy, they it was a stage fight.
So if it's this stage fight now in the OHL,
it's a rule that they're both kicked out, so you can't.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Do that anymore. So that was staged.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
I mean, but they were they both dropped the.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Gloves and they just both went at it whatever, But
it was it was a it was a good fight.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
It was a good tussle.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
I thought Patton got the better of them, but at
the end, right Carrie got the that got the last shot.
But Patton is one tough cookie, I'll tell you that.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Yeah, for sure. And you love to see young guys
getting into it as well. I know James Richmond is
a fan of that, seeing that the young players showing
that side of their game. You talk about, of course,
the big goal from Troy Patton in the in the
game on Friday night, Porter marks home four points, continues
to uh terrorize the Ohl really is is the best
way to say. Regal in that game, a couple of
(07:01):
hats thrown on the ice. Big big night for him
and also the guy we're gonna be talking to you
in a moment in Jack Van Bolts and two goals
in that game as well for him.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Yeah, I mean it was just the again four lines
pouring it on on the North Bay battalion. They couldn't
really do anything on Jack guy the COVID or inside
of the defensive zone. And one guy wanted to talk
about after we talked to Jack to JVV, one guy
want to talk about a spencer Sova. I mean, he
had a nice weekend, and you know, we talked about
(07:32):
a guy. We talked about a guy that needed to
take the place of Chad Shark from last year, a
guy that was going to be that guy. I'm starting
to think now, Spencer Sova is that guy.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
I really am.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
He's starting to play in all situations, on the penalty kill,
on the power play, on regular regular strength, of course,
but he's playing in all situations.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
He's playing so well right now. But I want to
get into that more than that later on. He's he's
playing at another level as well.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Yeah, we can, we can definitely do that. In the
last segment. We can talk a little bit more about
about Sova's game. But coming over, you knew about the
offensive side of it, and I think everybody knew about that,
But I think maybe it just took him a little
bit longer to kind of get settled in on the
defensive side. But now that he's starting to show more
of that, like you said, it's they need a replacement,
(08:18):
and they needed a replacement for Chas Sharp and now
he is looking like looking like the guy like you said. There,
So we have that game, the big seven to two
win against the North Bay Battalion then the Sarnia Sting
come to town and it was kind of a reverse
of the Friday night game. They got off to a
great start but couldn't really sustain it. Sarnia, I know
you talked about it on the broadcast quite a bit,
and when you're interviewing some of the Stink players as well,
(08:39):
just the hard work that's haarney At plays with was
just it was unmatched in that game.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Okay, yeah, all right, so yeah, sarney a Sting, you
know what it was. They came out hard and they
deserve to win that game. They came out to compete
right from the opening with sol all Steel has got
off the lead and it seemed like maybe they needed
a little, you know, a little wake up call kind
of thing. Right Well, they gus didn't get off to leave,
but they came back to take the lead and they did.
They they played hard, they were finishing their checks well.
(09:06):
Coached from Alan Lea tang Uh Sza had a really
good game and goal and kind of a repeat of
last year when they came just fign you really if
you ask me, and but no, well deserved and they
deserve to win that game.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Still heads their day out, they out. Uh, they were competing.
The steel has to stop competing. So there it is.
That's that, that's the ball game.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Yeah, I know, you're you're You're completely right. And and
that's again kind of a reverse of what we've seen
a lot of this year with the with the Steelheads. Uh,
they lose that game five to three at home once
again at the c A Center. But I think something
else we can definitely discuss about that game. You see
(09:49):
Loup Mesa, I think is the name that we kind
of haven't haven't talked about. I know we talked to
him last week. Uh, and it was great to have
him on. But since he's moved up to that top line,
I mean, he's just been he's been flying. Obviously, anytime
we get to play with the Rakoff, you get to
play with Martin and it's gonna help. But he's taking
his game to a completely different level.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
Yeah, I mean the speed.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
I asked him my number, saying to him last week,
did you get faster or something? Because every since he's
gone up to the top line, it's just like he's
gotten faster. So he's he's playing in another level right now.
And it's nice to see him on the top line
doing some some good things. Now, that's really really good.
But now that what's going to happen when Angus MacDonell
(10:27):
comes back, that's my question. So Angus MacNell was on
our top line, so we're looking at another couple of
weeks probably for Angus before he comes back from his
lower body injury. Right, So, so there's gonna be some
interesting decisions that James Richmond's going to have to make
with the Lions. What he's going to do with the
Lions right now. So losing Lucas Carmeres on the weekend
(10:49):
as well, Uh, you know, and I hit from Wyatt
Kennedy there, so it's like that, Yeah, Luke Mesa and
in MacDonell, it's going to be interesting to see James
Richmond does.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
But Luke Mesa he's playing another level on the top line. Definitely.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Yeah, you're right, it will be interesting because I know
when we talked to JR. And he was saying there
was no thought of any movement before the macnanell injury
of moving them around. So I would think it just
goes back there. But I mean, I guess if Luke
mess continues to play it this way, you never know.
You might want to want to stick with it. You
mentioned there the Carmeer's injury. You should probably talk about
that a little bit too.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
He goes out in the game on Friday against North Baya.
We think at this point it's probably not as bad
as originally thought the injury, hoping maybe two to three
weeks when we were talking to James Richmond. That's kind
of the timeline again, a lower body injury for him.
And that's a big loss because now the depth just
gets tested even more.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
Yeah, and so uh it does get tested even more.
And you know one guy, that's a couple of guys
that are really starting to look good. I feelings did
look he's you know, he's looked good ever since the
season started. But how about Martin the Sulik, Yeah, he's
looking really good. He looked really good on the weekend.
He's been on that line with Jack van Bulson and
Adams did Lock. He had to assist on the weekend.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Right, really nice crossed ice pass on on Sunday to Jack.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
Van Bolsen going hard to the goal and Van Bolsen
beats uh goaltender Nado on right and uh, yeah, looks
like he's getting more comfortable James Richmond was talking about,
you know, maybe the ice was you know, still used
to the europe and I are still getting used to.
He's not running into the boards anymore because he's not
(12:26):
doesn't think the ice is too big. But you can
see it that, you know, I probably watched the game
maybe one more time after I watched it, and you
can see how comfortable he's getting.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
I just kind of kept my mind on my eyes on.
Speaker 5 (12:41):
Va Sulic and the way he's transitioning back and forth.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
He's getting better and better and this that's such a
good sign for the Steelheads to have the import pick
from check Ya getting better. So now that gives the
steel it's even more depth. Right, Paton played, I thought
Paton had a good weekend. I thought with Kowski, you know,
he played really well on the weekend. He was really
really physical out there. So things are starting to come
(13:07):
together a little.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Bit more now.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
So now the injuries that are oh Sebeski Karmiras, my goodness,
Mac Danell, Leskovar, Hey, I mean, this is a good
situation to be.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
In, right, and even you talk about all the depth
and that third line of with Kowski, Sharrat and Ren Richmond,
they were a ligne last year that got a lot
going on the for check, had a lot of offensive
zone time and kind of got things going for the
top line to get out there and then possibly have
some tired defenders on the ice. And they're kind of
(13:39):
getting back to that game. I think they kind of
lost it a little bit early on in the year,
but this past weekend they've shown that they've gotten right
back to what they were doing last year. So that's
a massive development again for the depth, and I like
that you talk about Basulak as well. It's going to
take a little while to get adjusted, so obviously he's
starting to get into that. And then lastly, we'll just
quickly go over that game against with baby overtime winner
(14:01):
on Sunday, Jacob Gibbons getting the start, first time that
he was back in the net since that good return
from suspension, and I was going to say he did.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
He looked really strong, looked really good. He made some
really good saves.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
I mean, he was showing his athleticism, making some good
right pad saves, making some good saves in general, and
his positioning was really really really good.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
H Maybe there was one maybe one goal, of course,
you know, he'd want to have back.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
There's always a goal you want to have back as
a goalie, right, But overall he played really, really well and.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
They needed that. They needed that on the weekend, got
four out of six points.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
And what it was, it was a good game. It
was a great game to steel Its again.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
You know, they got off to that three to one
lead against the North Day Battalion that after that, you know,
they let the battalion get back into the game, and
I thought to myself, you know, I was calling the game,
and I thought to myself, oh gosh, there, you know,
to myself, they're running out of gas like this because
you're playing two games and under forty eight hours, right,
So but they didn't.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
They came together and ray Cooff. I thought Raycoff's goal
was an absolute snipe to the game at four.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
And before that, Porter Marteau, my goodness in the second
period scoring with point nine seconds and the second that's
an NHL shot man curl drag shot.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Nobody would have stopped that.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
I don't care who you are, right, And I was
just like, wow, unbelievable, unbelievable this And if Porter Martau
doesn't go top three, I'll be surprised, but he's got
to keep it up, right, scouts, look at the way
you you play in the playoffs. You could be a
hundred point guy and not too well in the playoffs,
(15:34):
and the scouts are gonna say, well, he's not a
playoff guy, and.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
You'll drop right. So you know, that's the way. That's
the way she goes. Is here she goes or she
doesn't go right.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
And I mean I don't have any doubts that he's
he is a player that will continue to perform into
the playoffs. I think that he's he's kind of built
for that. Yeah, those those scenarios. Before we go to
break here we get to our guest on the other side,
also talking about you had mentioned his name earlier, but
Spencer so the five assists in the game, assisting on
all five goals scored by the Steelers. What a knight
(16:05):
for him.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
It was unbelievable, and especially on that overtime goal.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
I mean, here was three on three.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
It was Spencer Soba, Luke Misa and Adams Adlucky you
started it off. I mean not even thirty seconds in right, uh,
Misa with the steed comes down the wing. Soba anticipates it.
You know that shot was on purpose, he said, said Locky.
Coming down the wing, he knew nad On was gonna
kick it out to him and make the save, and
(16:32):
he did.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
He was perfect.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
And that's how smart of a player Spencer Sova is
and that's why he's an over ager that the steel
Heads wanted from the erie odders. Right, here's a guy
who's been in NHL camps and whatnot. Spencer Sla has
really been really been impressing me lately.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
On the back end. He's just five assists.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
He was in on every goal and he's played again,
I'm going to say it again, every situation he's out there,
so I mean three on three, overtime, the power play,
the penalty kill.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
He's he's starting to be that guy now. So it's
good to.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
See, all right, So we will take a break here,
come back on the other side. We will have Brampton
Steelheads forward Jack van Vohlsen. Again. You're listening to trout
Talk here on Saga nine sixty am. A head, Welcome
back to trout Talk here on Saga nine sixty am.
I'm Brendan Lang along with Mikey k My carefully it
is two broadcasters for the Brampton Steelheads, and now joining
(17:22):
the show is Brampton Steeheads forward Jack van Volson. Jack,
thanks for coming on the program. How are you doing?
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Thanks for having me?
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Well, it's about time, not just kidding.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Thanks thanks for being here. Of course. You guys just
finished off your your first three and three of the year.
You only got two, you got the next one coming
up next weekend, for this weekend coming up now, but
you pick up two wins out of the three. What
are the vibes like around the team right now?
Speaker 6 (17:49):
Yeah, I mean I think it was I think it
was pretty big for us to get that overtime win
there on Sunday. You know, I thought, I don't think
everyone was happy with the kind of the way Saturday
played out.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
I felt like.
Speaker 6 (18:04):
It just wasn't our best kind of straight up, it
just wasn't our best. So even though it was even
though it was a three and three and you know,
we were a bit shorthanded, we really we really wanted
to have a good game Sunday. And yeah, I mean
it was a tough battle against North A. You know,
the their barn was going and it was nice a
little bit of a comeback there and obviously great firs
(18:26):
is to get into OT and definitely definitely lifted the
boys up and you know, got some good momentum, like
you said, going into another three and three this weekend.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
It's good. Jack.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
I just want to start off when you first got
traded to the well missits August. You LEDs at the time,
and you played your junior hockey with Porto MARTONU with
the Toronto Junior Canadians. I mean, did you guys call
each other after that, because you guys got traded both
at the same time, talk about that.
Speaker 6 (18:54):
Yeah, I mean, yeah, it was kind of I don't know,
I don't really know if neither of us expect either
of us expected it at the time, kind of you know,
just being drafted and then you know, I think we
only played around thirty games for you know, our teams,
and yeah, I think once we kind of found out
(19:14):
that was happening, or we got a little bit of
a word and you know, there started to be some
rumors out there and whatnot, we definitely started texting a
bit and then we kind of found out that we
could end up in the same spot, and obviously it
was really cool, you know, just kind of how it
worked out because obviously, you know, like you said, playing
(19:35):
playing Jaisee together, and even before that, we grew up
played against each other, our dads played against each other
in the OH, so I've always kind of we've always
kind of been buddies.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
So it's definitely cool to end up in the same spot.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
And because Mike, he asked of a you know, kind
of earlier on in your career. This this weekend we
had Troy Pattens for his first OHL goal. Can you
remember your first Ohl goal and what was it like
and what kind of were the were the feelings in that?
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 6 (20:03):
It was against uh, it was against Hamilton at the time,
I guess now Branford. But it was my second game,
so it was obviously it was pretty cool to get
it over the way pretty early. And yeah, I mean
it was just kind of a lucky play. Honestly. I
kind of was on a fast break and then I
remember I was on a I'm pretty sure it was
(20:23):
on a little bit like of a two on one
with Quintin Paje who's still on Peterborough. I tried to
slide it over to him in my backhand and hit
the d skate, the puck kind of came right back
to me and my feet were almost like blow the
goal line actually, but I like shot it with my feet,
blow the goal line and like hit the goalie's ear
and went top shelf. So you could say a little
(20:46):
bit lucky. Yeah, I remember it pretty clearly. It was
a special one. Maybe a bit of luck involved there,
but yeah, I mean obviously emotions were high, obviously really happy.
You know, you obviously think always about your first one
and stuff like that. So yeah, it's definitely what I remember.
Speaker 4 (21:03):
Oh yeah, boy, coming from an athletic family too, you're
you know, your you your father and you know, I
thought I did some digging year in your uncle Joe
one a memorial Cup with the Sue Sabery Greyhounds.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
How about that, Like I mean, obviously uncle Joe.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
How much do you talk to Uncle Joe about his
experience and how much does he carry it on to you?
Speaker 3 (21:23):
What kind of advice does he have for you?
Speaker 6 (21:26):
Yeah, believe Yeah, it's awesome. Yeah, like you said, kind
of growing up in a hockey family. Obviously, my dad
and my uncle Lee in the way they like they
both ended up well. Originally my uncle he Yeah, he
played in the Sue one of one one a Memorial Cup,
I'm pretty sure as a sixteen year old.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
So pretty cool first year for him.
Speaker 6 (21:48):
And then he actually ended up being the captain there,
which is really cool because every time we take the
trip to the Sioux, they have their they have the
Captain's Wall. And I remember my first first year when
we when we first did our suite trip, he came
along with my dad, so that was pretty special just for.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Him to be able to, you know, kind of see
the rank again.
Speaker 6 (22:09):
And yeah, I mean the they live my family and
their family they're really tight, so we always spend you know,
holidays with them and stuff like that. They're only like
a five minute drive away, so spend a lot of
time with them in the summers. And yeah, he's been
he's been a big part of it because even when
my dad played, he was a defenseman, but my uncle
(22:30):
was a forward, so I can relate to him there
a bit. And yeah, he's always coming out to games
and he's really great supporting me.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
And yeah, I've definitely learned a lot from him.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
When you first came on the show, you were talking
about the games and you mentioned the barn in North
Bay was was rocking. Where's the toughest place to play?
Do you think, as an opposing player.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
I know where this is going. I think I don't know.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
I'd probably i'd say it like in terms of.
Speaker 6 (23:02):
In terms of like loudness, I could I guess you
could say it's like I would say, I'd probably put
like North Bay up there, just because it's it's it's
a little bit like you know, it's a tinier rank
the roofs low and especially just because we've played there
in playoffs a couple of years. I think it's my
(23:22):
personal experience is just from that. But I would say,
like I'd say Sudbury's pretty tough, just because kind of
a bit, a bit bit of an older rink, you know,
it's A yeah, i'd say those two. Some some guys
say Owen sound. I kind of like Owen sound. It's
a it's obviously obviously it's a little bit smaller, but
(23:47):
you know, I think, I don't know. I think it's fun.
Kind of reminds you of playing minor hockey and ice
is a little bit smaller, so you get to shoot
from everywhere.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
But ju rake over there, Manja, it's like an o
J rinker worse than an o J rink.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
Right, Yeah, you're like where everything's like you're right on top.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Yeah, just like just like this.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Yeah, I agree with you, Like it sounds so small.
Speaker 5 (24:12):
Yeah, I wanted to gonna get a new arena over there.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
Probably never, but I don't know. Yea too. I kind
of like it too.
Speaker 6 (24:18):
Yeah, but I mean, like, obviously obviously there's like London
Kitchener Winds, they're like the big rinks, But I don't
really I wouldn't say those are like hard. Obviously it's loud,
but I think that's more just like exciting, Like I
look forward to playing in those rinks, you know, even London,
like nine thousand fans.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
Stuff like that.
Speaker 6 (24:35):
So I would I would say those games, you really
get amped up for it and you use that to
your advantage.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (24:42):
So you've been playing on the line right now with well,
you guys have really been clicking with Martin Vasulik and
Adam Zidlicky, we talked about it before you came on.
Came on right now, I mean, what's been working for
you guys. You guys have been really really clicking.
Speaker 6 (24:56):
Yeah, obviously past four so games, I think things have
been going really well. You know, Zid's just kind of
a flying out out there and using his using his
speed to his advantage.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
And.
Speaker 6 (25:11):
You know, it's it's it's great to play with something
like that kind of he's just a hound on the
fore check, you know, always moving his feed and then
he's obviously so skilled like when he gets the puck.
So yeah, I think we've I think we've really I
think we played a bit together last year, but I
think this year it's been a little bit more consistent.
So I think we've built some chemistry. Yeah, and then Martin.
(25:33):
Martin has been a great new addition. He's made a
couple of sweet passes to me, so just all I
had to do was bury it, which is nice. And yeah,
I think just him coming over. He's a really skilled player.
I think he sees the ice pretty well and when
when that plays there, he can make it. So yeah,
it's been going well and you know, hopefully, hopefully we
(25:54):
can keep it going.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
And you've been filling the net up recently with with
four goals in your last four games. You have the
two goal game of course over the weekend as well.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
We were talking to j R.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
And he was saying, you know, you've kind of been
around it all year and then they really started to
go in again these past four games. Is does anything change?
Do you think, you know, just maybe got some better
bounces here, like kind of what's what's gone into this
recent stretch of scoring.
Speaker 6 (26:18):
Yeah, like you said, I think I think there was
like a little bit of a slower start, you know.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
I guess you could say first eight games or so.
Speaker 6 (26:27):
But yeah, you know, I think for me it wasn't
really I wasn't really trying to focus on that. I
think it was early. So I was just trying to
make make sure I was doing the right things, you know,
focusing on the little details because I knew eventually, I know,
I knew eventually it was gonna come. I was getting shots,
I was getting some I was getting some good grade days.
So I think I think when you're not getting the
(26:47):
good grade a's and you're not putting yourself in those
in those situations, I think that's when you kind of
got to worry. But you know, I felt confident with
my game, and I was just trying to add things
throughout throughout my game. Focus on the details, you know,
make sure make sure I was good on face offs,
plan more physical things like that because I knew eventually,
like shooting and you know, scoring these things are and
(27:10):
making plays, you know, on the offensive side, I feel
those are my strength. So I think I know eventually
it was gonna come. But yeah, it's been nice recently,
you know, for it to go my way, and you know,
kind of just look to keep that going absolutely.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
You know, I hate to bring this up, but you know,
maybe it's a motivation for you, uh, not being drafted
in the last NHL draft, You have a chip on
your shoulder this year playing you know, is that a
goal of yours? Obviously to to get drafted, of course,
to go back into draft? You know, like is that
one of your goals this year? Obviously to win of course,
but is that one of your big goals?
Speaker 3 (27:44):
Yeah? For sure. I mean, which I thought you should
have been drafting just to let you know.
Speaker 6 (27:49):
So yeah, I mean, like like you said, it's yeah,
I'm obviously going to use it as motivation, but I'm
not like I'm not gonna dwell on it or anything.
I mean, I think that all I can really do is,
you know, kind of just focus on this year and
you know, putting my best foot forward and like and yeah, like,
like you said, go go back in as a plus one.
Hopefully I have a strong year, you know. I think
(28:12):
it's gonna help that we have a really strong team.
So I think just showcasing myself in the best way. Yeah,
I mean there's tons of guys that that get drafted
plus one, even plus two. I think we saw that
last year. So yeah, it's obviously in the back of
my mind. It's definitely a goal. It's always been a
goal for me. But no, I don't think I'm gonna
stress about it right now. I think the most important
(28:32):
thing for me, you know, it is just to just
to focus on the present. I don't really think thinking
about that stuff really helps me out in the long run,
you know. I just think, you know, you don't really
need to worry about it, and at the end of
the day, whatever happens happens. But yeah, it's it's it's
obviously a chip on my shoulder not getting drafted. But
you know, going going to a going to a camp
(28:54):
at the start of the year, I think was a
really good experience for me. And then even bringing that,
just bringing that back, I think it gave me a
little taste, and yeah, I think just keep keep keep
doing what I'm doing, you know, I think and then,
like I said, just focus on what's happening now and
then the rest will take care of itself.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
And I was gonna say, like you just mentioned there,
of course you go to the Columbus Blue Jackets camp
and you said it was it was beneficial for you,
Like what do you see there, You know that that
you see kind of on the pro side, that that
really helps you when you do come back to play
for your team here in Brampton.
Speaker 6 (29:28):
Yeah, I think I think the biggest thing for me
was kind of just how fast it is, because that's
something that I you know, it's something that I wanted
to make more consistent in my game.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
Was my pace, you know, just making sure that my
feet are always going.
Speaker 6 (29:43):
I think there was sometimes last year where I just
get caught gliding around a bit too much, and I
think it was really a big focus for me over
the summer and going into the season, you know, just
to have it more consistent. And I think once I
went to Columbus and played those games in Buffalo at
the showcase, I think because I really I really just
had to always be moving, to be able to keep
(30:03):
up with you know, there's a lot of HL guys there,
you know, and I was the youngest guy there, right,
So I think just going there.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
And having the sense of how fast it really is.
Speaker 6 (30:15):
I think when I came back it was like, Okay,
this is the pace I got to play at and
not really kind of adjusting back to what the OHL
is and not that it's much slower, but there's definitely
a little bit of a difference, just because the guys there,
you know, bigger, and they they're more experienced.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
And stuff like that.
Speaker 6 (30:33):
So I think for me, it's just kind of thinking
about that and you know, having that pace in mind,
because at the end of the day, like if you're
not playing.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
With pace, then you're not going to keep up with
those guys.
Speaker 6 (30:44):
So I think it was just a really good reminder
and really good experience for me coming back for this year.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
So you're with Luca del Bell Blues down there. How
much did Luca help you in Columbus Camp?
Speaker 2 (30:54):
Yeah, he was great.
Speaker 6 (30:56):
I kinda even though I never played with him, he
kind of it was like when when I got traded.
When I when I got traded, he got traded out right,
but he's like every year when he like comes back,
he does a couple of training camp skates, So I've
done a couple of skates with him in the summer.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
Yeah, he was great.
Speaker 6 (31:12):
He was someone I could, you know, lean on, even
because when I got there, I didn't really know many
of the guys, but he was one guy that I
was pretty familiar with, so you know, even just like
going to dinner and stuff, just texting him like making
sure it's like the right dress code because he's been there.
He's been at a couple of the camps with them,
So yeah, it was really nice to have someone I
could lean on there for sure.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
And talking about your game, one are your biggest strengths
so far this year is has been in the face
off circle and you've been the best on the team
in taking draws. Is that something that you've always kind
of had a knack for. What kind of work goes
into perfecting that craft?
Speaker 3 (31:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (31:48):
I mean I think it's something that I've been dominant,
like predominantly center my entire life. So it's something that
I'm very comfortable with, and I think it was something
as I grew older and matured a bit more. I
think it was something that I realized was like really
important because not only like yeah, like the team obviously
(32:08):
it's huge, especially in the Ozone D Zone like special
teams even more. But I think it's at the end
of the day, it's just another I think it's just
another way to like just to get on the ice more.
I mean, you know, if if the if you can
use that to your strengths and it's oh there's a
big draw, then you.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Know we need that on the team.
Speaker 6 (32:26):
So yeah, it's definitely something that I worked on, and
I've done a lot of work on it, especially with
like Thorny and stuff going over like video and just
pre skating the other teams.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
Face off guys.
Speaker 6 (32:38):
But yeah, I think I think, especially this year, I've
done a deeper dive into it, you know, especially with
my mechanics and stuff like that, and like just how
my feet are even even just like getting stuff from
watching like the Leaf games.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
And stuff like that. Yeah, I think I think it's
it's paid off.
Speaker 6 (32:54):
But I think there's been a couple of games where
I've been pretty hot, so I think just kind of
you know, in it out a bit more and keep.
Speaker 2 (33:01):
It more consistent and yeah, I mean it's like I
like taking them. So yeah, hopefully it keeps that going.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
Now you're doing great.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
So you know Big three and three coming up this weekend,
Ottawa sixty seven's Kingston never easy trips right down east
and then the Bulldogs on Sunday and you come back,
then we come back home and then it's.
Speaker 3 (33:22):
The Bulldogs on Sunday whatnot.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
So you guys have been through it before, the younger
players haven't, you know, Cartwright, Patt and whatnot.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
So how do you how do you teach these guys,
you know, how to eat properly and these kind of trips,
how to keep how to keep loose and whatnot.
Speaker 6 (33:40):
Yeah, I mean I think I think the biggest thing
is just you know, we're going there. We're going there
to win hockey games, right, So yeah, like like you said,
they really haven't been through it. I think they got
a little bit of a taste of it this weekend.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
You know. I think Paton was okay.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
Yeah, I thought I thought he did. I thought he
did really well of him.
Speaker 6 (34:00):
So yes, but yeah, I think even like Saturday night,
like just going up to going up to North Bay
after the game, I think they kind of got a
sense of you know, how quick to turn around is
waking up Sunday morning, you know, kind of two o'clock
game right away, So if it kind of almost felt
like two games like in under like two days almost
like this was a four o'clock game then a two
(34:21):
o'clock game, right, So yeah, I mean I think those
guys know, like they know, just stay hydrated, keep eating.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
Well, we do a lot of like team meals and
stuff like that.
Speaker 6 (34:30):
So yeah, I think the most important thing is just
about taking care of your body, not staying up too late.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
You know, just how important sleep is, stuff like that.
Speaker 6 (34:38):
But yeah, I think I think they've gotten a pretty
good idea, you know, how to how to take care
of yourself because at the end of the day it
is important, and you know, we got to be ready,
especially for three and threes.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
All right, Jack, thank you so much for coming on.
We'll let you run here again. Good luck for the
rest of the way, and we'll we'll talk to you soon.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
Thanks.
Speaker 1 (35:01):
All right, that was Brampton Steelheads forward Jack van Volsen,
and we'll be back here on the other side to
wrap things up here on Saga nine sixty am and
Welcome back to trout Talk here on Saga nine sixty Am.
I'm Brendan Laying along with mikey K Mike Carafelids, two
broadcasters for the Brampton Steelheads. Thank you for coming along
(35:21):
on Saga nine sixty or wherever you're listening or watching
us here on trout Talk. Jack van Volson just on
the show, and every time we talked to him, and
we had him on the show last year. You interviewed
him on Frida or Saturday. Excuse me, Yeahsisarni a sting
and then we just talked to him there in the
last segment. And every time you talk to him, you
can tell that the knowledge of the game is extremely,
(35:45):
extremely high and the hockey sense is probably one of,
if not his best.
Speaker 4 (35:49):
Asked I'm just gonna say, hockey IQ. Yeah, yeah, that's
it right there. His hockey hockey IQ is off the charts.
And the way he carries himself on and off of
the ice, that's another pro. He's an absolute pro. And
there's so many pros right now, you know on the Steelheads,
the Steelheads roster, but Jack, Yeah, he's he's got it.
(36:11):
He's got to get future ahead of him. His hockey hockey.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
He was great. He's getting better, better and better each game,
it seems like to me. So look for him this year.
Speaker 4 (36:18):
If he keeps going, you know, he's going to be
drafted the NHL and he's gonna do some big things
for the Steelheads this year.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
That's for sure.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
Yeah, No, I mean I can definitely see it. I
think he's one point off point per game to start
the year. I mean, playing early on on the third line,
you know, now now getting up onto on the second line.
I mentioned it during the interview as well. Scoring. He's
got four goals in his last four games. He scored
two in the game against in the game against Sarnia,
so you know, or excuse me, against the North Bay.
(36:46):
So you know, I mean, he's just he's really kind
of coming into his own and again he's he's gonna
be relied upon here a lot with with MacDonell and
Carmeras down uh, through the through the forwards and up
the middle and Carmeras, So it's gonna be important for
him to keep things going. And and he's looked really
good here recently.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
Yeah, we're gonna need the injuries to come back though, too.
I mean these are key.
Speaker 4 (37:07):
These are really key injuries right now, and the way
they're playing without the injuries is actually with the injuries
actually is very it's pretty impressive. So but I'm pretty
sure is the best he is going to be okay
for this weekend. Lear we think so he should be okay.
Mac donaland krmere is probably looking at another couple two
to three weeks Whatnotuh So yeah, Andre Gusica, we don't
(37:31):
know the timeline on the drag as well, so, uh,
but still two key guys that there they're gonna need
for this road trip and end on Sunday. Uh the
game that will be coming up right after trout talk
against the Branford Bulldogs and uh, Brandford, they've got a
lot of good players coming back, so that were worked
there the first game when the Steelers wake them.
Speaker 5 (37:50):
So it's gonna it's gonna be it's gonna be tougher.
Speaker 1 (37:53):
Yeah, it's definitely gonna be tough for not to mention
that's gonna be on the back end of the three
and three and what as well, and the first two
games being on the road too in Ottawa and in Kingston.
So first quickly we can kind of go over those
first two games because those will have already happened by
the time this air, so we can just kind of
maybe gloss over it a little bit. But that road
trip you you mentioned it. For the young players, you know,
it's their first time going on the road trip. They
(38:14):
had the one to North Bay. But now with two
games here in the middle of the three and three,
what are you kind of looking for that will tell
you the Steelheads are moving in the right direction in
those two games against Kingston and Ottawa.
Speaker 4 (38:27):
Oh, here's the thing about these games, like you know,
James Richmond's probably gonna split up ice time, so they're
more fresh for these three and threes, not to play
rakoff line so much, not you know, kind of thing
to split up the second line with the first line the.
Speaker 3 (38:42):
Third line a lot.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
So look for I'm gonna look for that, especially in
these tough three and threes. Now, the first game against
the Ottawa sixty sevens, we know it's going to be
a tough one.
Speaker 3 (38:51):
They played them last time.
Speaker 4 (38:52):
It was a shootout, actually shootout win for the Steelheads
three to two, I believe, and Jacob Gibbons that was
his first win as a Steelhead. Really well prot really
well in the shootout as well whatnot. So, but they're
gonna have to come out and get that puck out
quickly out of their own zone against this Outawa sixty
seven team. If they could establish the four check the
(39:14):
steel Heads and keep Ottawa hemmed in their own zone,
especially with the Ottawa defenseman maybe Henry Mus they got
back there, a couple other guys, but really not that
much right as far as I'm concerned. So they should
be okay as for Saturday against the Kingston fraunt acts.
So you got to stop them in the neutral zone.
You got to stop their speed. They are a quick, quick,
(39:35):
quick team in transition. If you can stop the Kingston
fraud acts and the neutral zone and turn that into
chances for chances your way, and especially stay out of
the penalty box and keep the power play going as well,
because the Steelers power play has been played really well.
On Sunday they were two to three, just to mention,
but got to see all the penalty box, especially against Kingston,
(39:57):
especially against the Ottawa. Keep Kingston, don't let them use
their speed, use the neutral zone or stop them at
the red line. Ottawa, use the four check, keep them
handing their own zone. Chances should come the other way still,
that should be okay.
Speaker 1 (40:13):
Yeah, and Kingston, I know, we obviously have talked quite
a bit about Niagara's hot star, but we don't really
talked much about Kingston's hot start. I mean, they're eight
four and four to start the year. There are two
points out of first place right now, sitting with twenty
if you're actually tied for second place in the Eastern Conference,
no one ahead of the Oshawa Generals right now. So
I mean this is a team that again it's a
(40:33):
team that maybe didn't have a ton of high expectations
coming into the year, but like you said, they've got
so much speed and they've gotten out of such a
great start. So that's going to be a big game.
The second game of the road trip, of course, a
tough one as well, So that's that will be a
good one. And then we have the Sunday matchup, which
which is going to be coming up right after the
show here on Saga nine to sixty am. That's going
(40:54):
to be at the CIA Center, a Sunday home game.
We don't see as many of those in recent years.
We get the Saturday games, but Sunday at home two
o'clock coming up right after trout talk, gonna see former
steele at Ryerson Landers in the building. We already saw
him and you mentioned too, some key players back in
the lineup for Bradford.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
Yeah, Nick Clardas is back. Nick Clardas, we didn't see
him in game one. They just got your a check, right, Adam,
you're check. First round pick of the Saint Louis Blues.
He just got sent back to or sent to the
Branford Bulldogs. And absolutely he's huge. He's a big boy.
Uh So there's two key guys right there. I mean,
they got Patrick Thomas out there. They got a good team.
(41:33):
They got a good young team over there as well.
But the Arvesting still are almost aid Arbor Jack guy,
Florian Jack guy. And I think that's hurting them, I
really do. I really think that's hurting them. They're they're
kind of an up and down team. Yeah, Ryerson Landers
is back as well. I think, Well, I know the
first game the Steeled just pumbled him with shots and
then Ryerson was pretty upset so because his defense wasn't
(41:57):
doing so well. But I think your check helps their defense,
the Bulldogs. But they still have a lot of holes
back there. I know they got Lucas Moore. He's probably,
to me their next best defenseman if you ask me.
Noel Roberts, he's kind of up and down. You don't
know really what you're gonna get from him. Besides those two,
I don't know. I really don't see anybody else in
(42:18):
that defense. Brendon, I don't know your thoughts on that.
Speaker 1 (42:22):
Yeah, I mean the three guys that you mentioned are
obviously the top three guys that you're going to be
looking at. And I feel like coming into the year
you you said that about their defense that you didn't
really see too much there. Now, of course your check
is is a massive upgrade up there on the on
the top pairing Jacob forgot about him. Yeah right, yeah, So,
(42:42):
I mean, you know there's they do have guys back there.
But but I think you're right in the sense that
if the steel Heads get on the four check, which
we talked a little bit about the third line getting
on that, if they make the defense make quick decisions,
I think that's where you're going to see success from
the steel Edds and the offensive zone and again just
trying to to create turnovers in the offensive zone. I
(43:05):
think is where they could get a lot of their
offense from.
Speaker 4 (43:08):
Yeah, and then you know they they just it seems
like they always rise up to the games against these
Branford Bulldogs as well. Every time they play them, the
Steelheads always seemed to play well and beat them. So
you know, knock on with that happened again, and seems
like every you know, the four lines are rolling against them.
So they're gonna need four lines to roll again, and
especially coming off you know, this will be the last
(43:28):
game of the three and three, they're they're gonna need that.
They're just just put it all on the line, especially
last game of three and three whatnot.
Speaker 3 (43:34):
So but it's gonna be tough.
Speaker 4 (43:36):
And you know Jamie Keee good Well coached great coach
for the Branford Bulldogs, So it's gonna be a dog
fight as they.
Speaker 3 (43:45):
Fish the fish against the dogs, right, So we'll.
Speaker 1 (43:47):
See, Yeah, it'll be big, it'll be big, and definitely
looking forward to to that one. A name that you
mentioned earlier that you wanted to get back to with
Spencer Siva, So let's talk about him quickly here before
we before we go, we got about three four minutes
before we had to wrap things up here on trout
Talk and get to our game against the Branford Bulldogs.
But Spencer Sova his biggest performance as a stealer with
(44:08):
the five assists on Sunday in North Bay. But other
than that, I think the defensive game is really starting
to come into its own.
Speaker 3 (44:16):
Like you know, he's getting his stick in the lanes,
in the passing lanes.
Speaker 4 (44:22):
I mean when he's when North Day was trying to
make you know, the perfect pass, crossing pass and say
it on the penalty kill, Who's whose stick was there
to stop at Spencer Sova, he was getting back on
two on ones, making him two on twos. I mean,
he's he's making big hits again, He's hitting guys. He's
just he's just playing in another level right now. And
(44:42):
again I have to say it again, if there's looking,
if they're looking for a guy, if we're looking for
a guy that's just going to take over for Chash Shark,
because Chash Sharp was that captain back there. Sencer Solva
was a captain of course, don't forget for the Arie Otters.
Now assistant captain for the Steel Edge. And there's a
reason why he's starting be that Chazz Sharp back there, so, uh,
(45:03):
they're gonna need him. They're gonna need performances like that
from him every night. But this weekend he really impressed me.
Five assists again on Sunday. But his defensive play is
which doesn't get noticed enough, but it was really good
on the weekend. The stick was in the lands, he's
taking out the man. He's doing everything fundamentally sound right.
So yeah, he's he's coming into his own.
Speaker 1 (45:26):
Yeah, I know, he really is. And you're talking about
the on ice play, but also off ice too, the
intangibles of Chas Sharp Broad and bringing Spencer Silva and
being a captain before in Eerie definitely brings that aspect
to the team as well, which is something that that
that they needed in the loss of Chazz Sharp. So
so huge on the ice, an huge off the ice
for for Brandon this year.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
Yeah, he's been He's he's the guy off the ice too.
Speaker 4 (45:50):
I mean, he's a quiet, quiet leader and he always says,
you know, if I have to say something, I'll say it,
but otherwise, you know, I kind of lead by example
kind of thing, right, But uh, he he fits in
perfectly with this team and you know from the team
last year. You know, we saw how tight knit the ARTH.
There's still tight knit. And again I keep saying that
we know it's cliche. A lot of teams say that
(46:11):
this team really is, and Spencer Solba fits in perfectly
with this team. So we'll see where it goes. Yeah,
he's just getting better. I we'll see where it goes.
Speaker 3 (46:21):
He's getting better.
Speaker 1 (46:22):
Yeah, no, he is. He continues to get better every game.
And of course we're going to see another three and
three so that'll be uh, that'll be interesting to see
how they do before we get to our last segment here.
If you do have any life tips, we can get
that a moment before we do, though, I just want
to say congratulation to Manny a Model for getting into
his first OHL game as well, right steelhead, So that
was pretty cool that he gets up there. Of course,
(46:43):
a lot of injuries you don't want to see that,
but when those injuries happen, somebody else gets an opportunity.
So that was good for him to get in there.
Speaker 7 (46:49):
Yeah, he did good, he did well. He did well
on got a couple of shifts in there. I saw
on Sunday there and he did well. You don't chucked
the bucking, didn't play that much whatnot. But he did
everything he had had to do and do anything more
than he had to do. But he played well and
good for him and he's going to get more opportunities.
So guy played for the London Junior Knights.
Speaker 4 (47:09):
He was the o j H, the o j HL
player of the week the week before, I believe so,
and then the here he is in the big in
the OHL. So congratulations to him for that and he's
just going to get better. Another player that I liked
in the preseason.
Speaker 1 (47:25):
So we'll see another player too who was a late
round selection that that ends up getting signed by James
Richmond after training camp. We saw that, even going back
with Charlie Kallen, Who's right, guy who gets sent out
of being signed. So of course the hard work paying
off from a training camp. So so congratulations and of
course congratulations Detroit Patten for his first OHL.
Speaker 3 (47:45):
Goal as well. Yeah yeah, in his first fight, that's right.
Speaker 1 (47:50):
Yeah, So good weekend, good weekend for him. All right,
do you have anything for us to finish things off?
Speaker 3 (47:55):
Mikey, I'll get some sleep, Larry, folks, if you need sleep,
get it. That's all the good one. Love it all right.
Speaker 1 (48:00):
Sleep don't go to sleep now though, because we do
have the steel that's coming up next.
Speaker 3 (48:04):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 1 (48:05):
It's gonna be the Branford Bulldogs against the Brafton Steels
coming up right after us here on trout Talk, So
enjoy the game. I'm Brendan Lang. That's mikey K. Mike carefully,
just thank you so much for coming along on trout
Talk here on SOCCO nine sixty am, and enjoy the
