Speaker 1 (00:15):
Hello, and welcome to trout Talk here on SOCCA nine
sixty am. I'm Brendan Lang, along with mikey K Mike
Careflida's two broadcasters for the Brampton Steelheads. I think episode
number fifteen today on the shout Talk of the season.
Pretty sure it's episode number fifteen. I checked before and
I've already forgotten, but I'm gonna go with episode number
fifteen on trout Talk today. All right, we can jump

(00:37):
into it before we do that. Though, it's been a
couple of weeks since we've seen each other on trout Talk. Mike,
you know, we had a little bit a week off there,
but now we're back on it. We're back talking to
talking to the players, talking about Steelheads hockey. So over
those two weeks, anything fun happened, anything big that needs
to be brought to the table.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Here, No not. I was, well, we didn't well we
didn't have a broad Let's you know to everybody, you know,
we didn't have a broadcast last week because I was
I was really feeling really really really in the bag
last week, really sick, and you were you went away

(01:14):
last week too, So we didn't have a broadcast last week.
So yeah. Other than that, uh, what's there to say, really,
I mean just at the rink and and taking care
of family stuff and that's about it, right, I know,
were just lots of stuff going on behind the scenes.
They had the top prospects game, which we'll talk about,
the excoose me, the chl USA National Development Program whatever

(01:40):
against each other, so which was kind of fun to watch.
And other than that, not much. Nice to watch the
Cleveland Browns winning a Thursday night there.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Oh my goodness, the snowball, that's right, that's right.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
And for anybody that says that we got lucky, I
don't think so.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
You gotta think so you got the hat on today
to supporting the team. Hey, Jameis Winston came in and
you know what, playing some good football, that's the way
she goes.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Yeah, he played really really well that game, and you
know it was a snow bowl. Yeah, but you got
to learn how to win, and that was They did
a good job of keeping those Pittsburgh fans in their
seats in Cleveland. And I don't understand those Cleveland the
Cleveland fans selling their tickets to the Pittsburgh fans and
making the making it loud over there, you know, and

(02:31):
I still, for the life of me, don't understand that.
But that's the way it goes anywhere.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yeah, people trying to make money at any any contacts.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
The way it goes.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Yeah, yeah, no, it's understandable. Yeah for me. How about yourself,
I know you went on trip there, so I did. Yes, Yeah,
I went to uh went to Michigan. We talked about
it a little bit, I think on the last episode
that I was going away, But yeah, I went to Michigan,
watch Michigan Wolverinees game. First time I'd seen football in
the US of any kind, really, I think, No, I

(02:59):
guess I have been a few hockey games in the US,
but checking it out, I mean, it's just it has
a different vibe over there. We were just talking off
the year before just sports in general. I mean, like
everybody around the town was wearing Michigan gear, and it's
like you go in the grocery store and everyone's got
it on and they've got like posters all over the
grocery store, and it's like, Wow, this is crazy and too,

(03:20):
like it's college too. Like you obviously, we still hold
pro sports in a high regard in Canada, but but
college sports is kind of you know, not the same
obviously not the same level that it is in the US.
I mean in some places it's bigger than pro sports.
So it is. It was It was pretty cool to
see good tailgate. Got to meet a few people from
down there and actually tailgated in a high school sort

(03:42):
of grassy area right next to the university. And it's
the same high school that both Harbob brothers went to.
So that was pretty cool. Yes, also Bob Seger, the
musician went there as well, So that's right, some history
at the Oh don't know Bob Seger. Okay, well yeah
it is. Yeah, Bob Saga did not go to that school,

(04:05):
but Bob did anyways. Yeah, so just some just some
you know history there. It was pretty cool. And then
there was just und one hundred and ten thousand people
at the game. Awesome to see the just the size
of the place really look really looked. The big Michigan
ended up Yeah, the big house.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
It's right.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Michigan ended up winning fifty to six. I think it
was Northwestern So not a not a great game, but
just cool to be part of the atmosphere.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Oh that's awesome. I mean that's amazing. I mean, I'm glad.
I'm glad you got to experience that, you know what
I mean. Once you experienced that once, you're probably gonna
want to go back again and again and again for
sure in the future, you know what I mean. So
I know that's the way it was with me when
I first went to my first NFL game. It's it's
a different ballgame, just like you said. But I've never
been to a game with one hundred thousand. I've never

(04:49):
been to a college game. So that's my next thing.
So that's you. You did it, man. Keep that memory, Yeah,
keep that memory like that's that's great. Good glad. You
had a great time.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
No, it was. It was a it was a great time.
And I know over the over the weekend when I
was gone, the steel Ends were having a pretty good
time as well. A couple of wins, a couple of
big wins for the for the Brampton steeletz, let's get
into those games right now. I think I was there
for the Friday game and we get to the arena
and everything was kind of you know, everything seemed like

(05:19):
last minute everybody was scrambling. You had a bunch of
moves being made. He had Chase LEFAIV getting there like
an hour before the game, getting ready to play for
his new team, and he played extremely well, I should say,
considering all the circumstances. And then you got a couple
of new signings on the back end and all that
kind of a scramble getting everything ready to go. But

(05:40):
obviously a big win against niagarais Dog's team that's been
pretty good so far this year.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah, that was a nice little bounce back win because
they lost to the Erie Otters on that Wednesday night
by the score of seven to four, and Eerie great
bounce back win. Custom guys making their Ohl debut that
were signed from the Jay Stephen Alexander excuse me, Alexander,
Stephen Graham McCauley, and well we alre We were talked

(06:09):
about the trade with Chase the Fabe, which was kind
of cool. Got a chance to interview him, and you know,
pretty much they just stuffed this put his stuff in
a van and they when and you know, as soon
as I got to the arena, I remember texting you
guys who work there yet, and we all text each
other saying, we Chase the fab is, you know, he's
playing to okay, you know, so that was kind of cool,
but good pick up chase fabe. They needed that over ager,

(06:32):
as James Richmond said, you know, because they were Joe
Goldwin two at the time. Stevie Leskovar is out in
the lineup, Spencer Sola was back then. That was huge.
But those two guys, the two guys that got in
the lineup that Alexander Steven and Graham McCauley were impressive
as well. I thought they really played well on the

(06:52):
back end, and especially I mean Alexander Steven could have
scored his first the witch All goal that game, so
kept coming to the man just found that open space
and he just shot it wide. I think he got
a little excited, but you know what happens, right, I mean,
what ever had that wide open scene there. But Graham
McCauley really really, really, really good in his own zone
as well. Both of them were goodness in their own

(07:13):
zone and they gave the team a little bit of
a jump and it was a huge win, big win
in a shootout, especially over Owen Flores last time they
played each other. We know what happened with the fight
and DNA greis Dog's winning that game.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Yeah, it was. It was great to see those two
guys get the get their first opportunity. You talk about
Alexander Steven, I mean, he's a guy who has put
up quite a bit of quite a few points in
the in the OJ as a defenseman. I think he
had like thirty two points. Yes, Burlington Gougers. Yeah yeah.
Also a Brampton native, so that's pretty cool for him
to be able to get playing in his in his

(07:49):
hometown to start things off. And then I think we
should talk a little bit more in depth about the
Chase let Fave trade because at the time when he
gets brought over, you talk about the the over agers
and they were going with zero at one point because
because Cova and Lascovar were out of the lineup, and
James Richmond said, you know, he didn't want to let
that go on for too long. And you can see
an immediate impact that that le Fave has made since

(08:11):
he's gotten in the lineup.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Yeah, I mean he's a good two way player, right
and you know, asking him, asking him at the intermission,
you know, what what do you bring to this team?
And we all know what he brings to this team.
But you know he's here's a guy that won an
OHL Championship with the Peterborough Petz two years ago, so
he's got that. He's got that championship experience. He's a
great two way player as well, and those are the

(08:32):
kind of guys that James Richmond likes, and interviewing them,
you could tell he's he's a good kid and whatnot.
So he fits in. I think he fits in pretty
well with with this lineup, especially with his two way
game and the championship experience. This is the kind of guy,
the kind of guy that this said this team needs.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
All Right, So we've got Owen Kurt right Steelheads, a
rookie defensemen coming up next. Quickly before we get to him, though, Mikey,
let's just say I wasn't at the game on Sunday
susse Marie Greyhounds obviously another big win for the steel Heads. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Huge.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
I mean hat trick, first career OHL hatrick for curre
In Wackowski. Uh, a hat trick for for Carson Raycoff
as well. In that game, they got off pretty much,
I'll keep it short and sweet. They got off to
a really really slow start, I thought against the Sue Greyhounds,
Brady Martin, you know scoring uh uh. They were getting
out shot, they were getting out played, and all of

(09:22):
a sudden halfway through that first period, some of the
things just switched and then the Steelheads really really started
to take it to the Sue Greyhounds. But really happy
for Kieran mckowski that game as well, for his first
career Ohl hat trick, and he's he's really been playing
well lately and the puck has really been finding his
stick and he's got a real heavy shot when you
love to see it, and good for him, and ray

(09:43):
Cooff just continues hot and those three ray Cooff, Martaon
and Forrest Is for Marton that game as well. That's it, man,
it was good.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
It was a good Yeah, it's I think you're right
about Wakowski too. Because of the injuries and kind of
where they've had to shift in the lineups. He's gotten
big opportunity here. He's and he sees it playing really well.
Even other names like McGregor Richmond on that third line center,
you have Gabe Sharad who's playing some good hockey right now.
Mason Zebeski's playing his best hockey. If of his season
as well. So that's a that's good to see you

(10:14):
with those guys. All right, we're gonna take a break
here on trout Talk on SAGGA nine sixty am and
we will be back right after this. Hello, and welcome
back to trout Talk here on SAGGA nine sixty am.
Brendan Laning along with mikey K Mike carafelit is too
broadcasters for the Brampton Steelheads and now like to welcome
on to the program rookie defenseman for the Brampton Steelheads

(10:37):
ow and Cartwright Owen. Thank you for coming on. How
are you doing?

Speaker 3 (10:40):
Hey, guys, thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
Hey, no problem, Thanks for coming on. And you're in
the You're in the dark there. You look like you're
in the corner there. Make sure, I guess you're in
your billet house. You're in a secure corner, snow baking
here you is that what's going on on?

Speaker 3 (10:52):
No, I'm tucked away in the basement right now.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
So gotcha, I understand you're in the dog host then
in exactly gotcha.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Mike you just mentioned I guess we can kind of
start with this because we talked a little bit earlier
in the season. Uh and you said that you're ability
building with Carson Ray Coops. That is that right?

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (11:14):
So in the past couple of weeks and things have
changed up and Carson actually moved out, so I actually
just got Chase, Uh, Chase the four that just came in.
So so we just moved in a couple of days
ago and we're getting all used to the new house
and seems like a good guy and it's gonna be
good for the team.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
Well, maybe talk about that a little bit. You can
start with with talking about Raycoff obviously in your first
go around in the OHL getting to to start things
out with him, and then obviously now Chase le favanother
guy who's we were just talking about him, just want
an OHL championship. He's a veteran in the league. What's
it kind of been like to to live with those
guys and kind of sharing their experiences with you.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Yeah, it was. It was pretty cool.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
It's just like the first time living away from home.
So Carson was pretty good with kind of helping me
make that big adjustment and kind of seeing him see
what he does does every day and it was pretty cool.
And Chases the same thing he's really consistent and your
routines every day and watching him at practice, he works
his bag off and and he's gonna be a pretty

(12:15):
good addition to the team.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
All right. So you you get drafted to the steel Eggs,
you first signed the paper. You're signing the paper. Now
you're in James Okay, remember back here in James Richmond's office.
What's the first thing that came to your head? You're
signing this. But you sign this paper, you're like, oh
my goodness, Like, you know, talk to me about that feeling.

Speaker 4 (12:35):
Honestly, Like, as I was signing that paper, I knew
I had an opportunity and just to make the best
out of it. And I think from there on I
just went tried my best the whole summer, and I
think I put a pretty good summer in with work
on ice and off ice, and it eventually paid off
with making the team this year.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
And even going back before signing the paper, you finish
off your your U sixteen season with the York Simcoe Express,
and then you know you're kind of going through the
the Ohl draft, Like did you did you talk to
the steel Edge before? Did you have an idea it
could possibly beat them? And just what was your reaction,
What were you doing when you were when you were drafted.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
Yeah, so maybe midway through last season, I had a
zoom call with Jr.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
And Mike Doyle and went went pretty good.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
And coming away from that meeting, I had a pretty
good idea that they wanted to They liked me and
wanted to take me. So leading up to the draft,
I had maybe a couple of teams in mind that
wanted me, and I knew third round or.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
Second last pick of the night.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
So I was pretty nerve wracking, but I had I
had faith in it and eventually got my name called.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
So talk about your off season program own. It seems
like now you're getting a little you're getting bigger. Now
you know you're getting older and and whatnot. Of course
you're only sixteen, But talk about your off season program
and and what you do.

Speaker 4 (13:59):
Yes, So in the last few couple of summers of
just go to like a small private gym and South
end of Aurora with a couple of my York Simco guys.
There's I think there's four of us in there. So
we go there probably four four days a week, maybe five,
and just a good good hour of workout and good.

(14:20):
Good to just spend time with the guys too and
keep those friendships as well.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
Yeah, and talking about that team, I mean you get
to spend you know, years with them kind of growing up,
and then you get to play in the Ohl Cup
as well. So what was that experience like?

Speaker 4 (14:34):
Yeah, so I spent eight years with York Simco, So
building up with those guys, I'd like. When I first
started in York Simco, we weren't the greatest team, and
I think each year we got better and better and
built up to sixteen where we had a pretty good
year and we had a little shaky shaky run in
the Omi Chase and got into the Ohl Cup in

(14:55):
a wild card game and ended up punching our ticket
to Oisha Cup, and which was quite the tournament to
play in with all those eyes on you, and I
think I made the best out of it.

Speaker 3 (15:06):
Now.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
One guy, of course, that graduated from that program. We've
talked about this before, Quintin Byfield. Do they have this
picture all over the place over there so you guys
can get all pumped up.

Speaker 3 (15:16):
Uh? They have.

Speaker 4 (15:18):
They have a couple of pictures in Jerseys and his
parents are still in the organization, so you see them
around the odd time, and you'll see Quinton training back at
home in the summer, which is good too.

Speaker 1 (15:29):
Have you ever have you ever got to skate with
him or work with him in any way?

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (15:33):
Not recently.

Speaker 4 (15:34):
I think when he played for your sinco, I was
in my first year in Novice and I think I
remember doing some like a mentor thing where I did
something with him, But I don't really remember anything recently.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
But that's awesome, man, you know, just to get to
see somebody like that, you know in the NHL right
now and he's he's a guy that went up pretty
early to the NHL, right and yeah, from the Saidbury
Wolves organization. But only talk about this year so far.
How different is it? Of course we all know all
the speeds a lot a lot faster of course than
the which you'll compare the OJ Whatnotuh what else have

(16:12):
you learned on the side with Matt Charon Tane? How
much has he helped you?

Speaker 3 (16:15):
Yeah, he's been great.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
So last year I went to Evers Academy and he
would he would come to our school maybe once a
week and run these specific practices. So that's why I
think that's when he first got his eyes on me,
and since then he's I've learned tons of things from
him and with making the jump, he's been great.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
And I mean you talk about the coaching staff there
with Matt, but how about the players, Like I mean,
who are maybe some of the guys that have that
have really kind of integrated you and got you, you know,
on the right track here in your first year.

Speaker 4 (16:48):
Yeah, the whole team has been great, just kind of
welcome me, welcome me in.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
And the decor especially just like Solva.

Speaker 4 (16:57):
Von Richter, Harding, Febec, you're pretty much all them, Leskovar.
They've all been great, kind of teaching me the little
things and what's what what not to do and what
to fix and they've been great.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
So you guys were all at the Top Prospects game
last night against you know, the USA Top Prospects Game.
Then I heard that you want a trivia contest?

Speaker 3 (17:24):
Yes I did so, so.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
If you elaborate on that and what did you win?
Did you win something? And what was the trivia question?
And tell me how this all came about.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
Yeah, So, like we our team split up into like
different groups to get rides there. So our car got
there for warm ups, and we were just kind of
sitting in the stands and some guy came up to
us and asked if we wanted to be on the
JumboTron for a trivia game midway through the first and
all the guys looked at looked at.

Speaker 3 (17:51):
Me and said, carts, he wants to do it. So
I ended up doing it halfway through the first and
it was it was one.

Speaker 4 (17:58):
Of those games where they like got to match the
the duos of the cards and they they mix it around.
Oh yeah, so I ended up got them all right
and won the whole whole team Cabodo hats.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Look at that you see? Yeah, my goodness, you want
all you want them all kobodo hats and they and
they should all be buying you dinner, because that's right.
It's amazing.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
Now.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
Now, did they volunteer you because they knew you were
good at trivia or because you were because you were
rookie and they wanted.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
To make you do I think I think it was
because of.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
That's awesome.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
It's not that bad though.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
It's fun though, right, Like that's fun stuff.

Speaker 3 (18:40):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
So you guys had some good bonding time and stuff
and whatnot. You never mind about that, But well that's
one of the things I'm trying to say. But you
know what else, what else do you know? Like who
you guys all hang around each other? Like who's who's
the guy that you really lean on on the team,
like to talk to for advice? That's what I'm trying
to ask.

Speaker 4 (18:58):
I guess I think uh von Richter and Harding are
definitely guys that I can just learn from and feel
pretty open with and chat with them on the ice,
chat with them on the ice and just kind of
they're good. They're both they're both defense and I like
to bring some other game into my game, so I
like to learn from them.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
And then on the ice, are there guys you know
playing in the OHL that maybe you grew up playing
with or against the you that you know you notice
on the Iceland's pretty cool that you're kind of playing
together in this you know setting.

Speaker 3 (19:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (19:30):
So one of my one of my good friends that
we played on GO for maybe last six or seven years,
Colin Ellsworth, he's on well so he's it was we
played them in an exhibision game and I think we've
played them once and we got them next week, and
they're in our school games. So it's always special to
see another buddy from home playing playing.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
Against I believe he's he's he the number two guy
right now.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
Yeah, I think so.

Speaker 4 (19:56):
Yeah, so he's getting gay?

Speaker 2 (19:59):
Yeah right, I thought, because I thought that joeven Osky
got up and then I guess you're just kind of
flip flopping maybe those Yeah, exactly, that's great. That's great,
all right, So what are the what are some of
the things you like to do off of the ice,
soin like we know nothing about you, so tell the
people about you. What do you like to do off the.

Speaker 4 (20:20):
Ice, off the ice, Like off season, I love going
to the cottage and spending time with my with my
friends up there, and I love fishing and going on
a ceado and and then I also like building things
like putting, puttering around the garage and building some random
thing out of wood or something and working with my hands.
And and then the odd sport I'll get into too.

Speaker 1 (20:44):
What's what's what's the latest thing that you've built?

Speaker 4 (20:49):
A couple of years ago, I made like an outdoor
cage from that. Okay, uh, next time, I think I'm
gonna make a bench out of my broken sticks.

Speaker 2 (21:02):
Wow, So you're like, there's your You're like a big
handy man.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
Huh yeah, I try to be with drywall down here
for drywall kind of guy.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
That's that's that's impressive man, that's impressive. So yeah, what
else if you like to go to the cottage, you
like to fish? Obviously you like you look like a
fishing kind of guy. I could totally see he's just
chilling on the boat, right, Yeah, exactly. What's the biggest
fish you ever caught?

Speaker 3 (21:26):
Uh? To be honest, our caught it.

Speaker 4 (21:28):
Our lake at the cottage is not the best fishing
it it's just ninety bass. I've caught some decent baths there,
but it's nothing else other than bass.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
How about sunfish? No?

Speaker 4 (21:44):
Nothing, Actually, there's the golf course I work at. There's
there's like ponds in there, so the odd time you'll
fish in there and we'll get tons of sunfish and stuff.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
Nice.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
Like the ponds in there are so stocked.

Speaker 4 (21:58):
Like I think one night I went there, maybe got
twenty two within two hours. Every every cast as a fish.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
Yeah, it's like so easy those Yeah, well I got one.

Speaker 3 (22:12):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (22:15):
How about the trou do you catch any true nothing yet. No, no, no, okay,
you said there that you get into the odd sports, Like,
did you play any other sports growing up?

Speaker 3 (22:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (22:26):
I played Triple A baseball as well until probably three
years ago. And it's kind of tough to play two
high end sports nowadays, Like you got to kind of
pick one, and I ended up I was a lot
better at hockey than baseball, and I loved it a
lot more so I picked I picked hockey catcher.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
Yeah, at the end of.

Speaker 4 (22:49):
My career, I was I knew a little bit of
a catcher, but center field a little bit of picture.

Speaker 1 (22:55):
Okay, Yeah, I was gonna I was gonna guess outfield
you got this long strides you could yeah track down
so yeah, yeah, all right.

Speaker 2 (23:04):
If there's one guy right now that I mean, you've
got into quite a bit of games this year. If
there's one guy that you have a person a little
rivalry with, who would be on the team on another team, obviously,
anyone that you can say that I hate, you know,
this guy, I play against this guy kind of thing,
you know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
There's a guy on the Autoway Chase Yanny. Yes, we
got into it a little bit at the at the
end of the game and I went to see with
him probably two years ago, and all right, I.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
Know what, Chase Y, So we're gonna remember that when
the next time we played the Autowa sixty seven. So
next time we played the Autawa sixty sevens, he's gonna
be watching this. He's gonna put it on off joking anyway,
that's gonna call. Everybody has their own rivalry kind of guy.
That's the thing we ask everybody the same question.

Speaker 1 (23:54):
Sorry, now, no, is is there like a is there
a team maybe per se that you kind of feel
like there's more of a rivalry against when you go
out there, Like I know we've had kind of some
some big rivals, like like Branford and when they were Hamilton,
you know, with the Steele it's but but for you,
is they're kind of a team that you feel the
game's kind of different?

Speaker 3 (24:11):
Yeah, I think I think Barry.

Speaker 4 (24:12):
Right now, it's just two top teams in the same
division and kind of a close like distance from from
each other. So our fans go there, their fans come here.
So it's always tight game and good game to play.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
And good atmosphere too, right, Yeah, yeah, there and Barry
and playing when they come to to Brampton and whatnot.
Sou So like, what tell us some more about yourself? Oh?
I know, okay, we know you like baseball. Do you
like steak?

Speaker 3 (24:45):
I love steak?

Speaker 4 (24:46):
Actually, I love a good okay, I love a good
keg steak.

Speaker 3 (24:49):
Or my dad makes a good steak.

Speaker 2 (24:51):
Too, So all right, so what how do you like
your steak?

Speaker 3 (24:54):
Medium rare?

Speaker 2 (24:58):
Yeah, you're good.

Speaker 1 (24:59):
Yeah, mikey, Mike, he likes to make sure, Mike, he
likes to make sure that everybody eats your steak medium rare.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
Yeah, you can't go wrong with medium rare.

Speaker 2 (25:08):
Yeah. Okay, good boy.

Speaker 1 (25:09):
I like you here, all right, Yes, thank you, thanks
for coming on here talking to us. Uh obviously you
know it's it's a busy time of the year and
you're playing some some great hockey and your and your
rookie year. So thanks so much for coming on and
good luck the rest of the season. We'll see around
the rink.

Speaker 2 (25:26):
Keep up.

Speaker 3 (25:27):
Thanks for having me, no problem.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
All right. That was Steelheads rookie defenseman Owen Krt right
here on Trout Talk on Sagging Iroe sixty am. And
we will be back right after this and welcome back
to Trout talk here on saggin I sixty am. I'm
running laying along with Mikey K Mikafelitis, two broadcasters of
the Brampton Steeheads. Thanks for coming along and thank you
to Owen Cartwright for coming on the program. A great

(25:51):
conversation with him. The last two episodes we got to
talk to the to the most recent draft picks of
the of the Steelheads that have been getting some opportunities
here in this in the season. We talked to Troy
Patton last week, now Owen krt Right this week, and again,
I mean it's it's the same sentiment about when we
see these players, when we talk to them, they all
kind of, you know, fit the same mold, and I
think that that's obviously done by intention by the coaching

(26:14):
staff and James Richmond at the head.

Speaker 2 (26:16):
Yeah, I mean he's another one, you know, like those two,
they you could tell they're gonna be pros. They've been
working really hard lately and it's nice to you know,
we see Troy Patton get on the ice. Just talk
about Troy Patton for a second, and you know he
works his butt off every time he gets out there.
Same with Owen krt Right, back there. And what I
like about Owen cart Wright is he's getting He's getting

(26:37):
a lot better back there, that's for sure, and he's
getting a lot more confident every time he gets into
the game. And I notice every time he plays with
Spencer Sova, he doesn't but never mind just with Sova,
just in general, he makes the right play. He doesn't
force anything, he doesn't try to make anything too extravagant.
When you have to use the boards, he knows to

(26:57):
use the boards. He won't put that puck up the middle.
You know, they say hockey one to one, never put
that puck up the middle. I've never seen him do
it yet. So he's a really really good sound defenseman.
I think he's got a really good future for the
steel As moving forward.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
Yeah, I mean I completely agree. I think you know
you're gonna start to see obviously more confidence as he
goes along and as he continues to play in more games,
and possibly you know that that offensive side of it
can can always come from that. But the defensive side,
I mean, he already is is great in his own zone.
Knowing where to be without the puck too, I think

(27:30):
is a big thing as well. Boxing out in front
of the net, making sure that there's you know, nothing
too crazy going on in front of He's very strong
too for a rookie, ye rookie player as well, so
he just does you know, a lot of little things, right.
I think that's kind of the best way to say it.
That that, like you said, there's no big mistakes. Sometimes
when you get young players, they maybe try to do

(27:51):
too much and you see some big mistakes come out
of it. But I haven't seen that at all in
the games that he's had to play. And just like
Troy Patton, he's had to get into more games probably
than he expected to, Like you know, coming into the year,
it's a team that's likely trying to go for a
Memorial Cup. You're a sixteen year old probably. I remember
talking to him earlier in the year and he said,
like half the games, if I get into that, like

(28:12):
i'd be I'd be happy with that and the kind
of talk to the coaching staff. But it's had to
be more than that. And he's definitely, you know, stepped
up to the task. And that's what has to happen.
You have to have guys step in when you have
injuries like they haven't and he's been one of the
guys to.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
Do that, yes, exactly. And I like the way he,
as you said, boxes out and he plays in his
own zone, of course. Yeah, I like. I like how
he finishes his checks. And when he finishes his checks,
he'll hold up the guy against the boards like you know,
the right way, you know what I mean, and he'll
pin that puck up on the boards with his skate.
And I love the way he does, you know, the
little things, as you said. So, and he's just gonna

(28:45):
get better. I mean, he's just he's just a rookie.
He's just a rookie for for the love of god,
you know. So yeah, good kid, really really nice kid.
How you liked that when in the Koboda hats for
everybody at the HL the top Prospect USA to Prospect thing.
That's amazing, right, So it's good for him. And I
hope the team watches this. They better buy him dinner
or something like that.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
So yeah, I agree, I think that's definitely in the
cars for him after that trivia performance yesterday. Smart smart,
that's right, Okay, So let's yeah, let's let's get into
uh into some games coming up this weekend. Now, they're
gonna be played on on Friday and Saturday, so we
will the games will be done by the time that

(29:26):
this comes out. But we we got a road trip here,
like you were going to UH to Sarny and sagat
Out two tough places to play, you know, two teams
that UH work hard. And I know Sorny has struggled
a little bit recently, but when they played in Brampton,
I mean you saw the compete in the effort level
that they gave. It's not gonna be an easy game
going down there.

Speaker 2 (29:44):
And sorry, no case that's and that's I think the
first time I feel, the first time the Steel has
played them. I feel maybe that the Steel has maybe
got a little bit cocky. I think maybe I don't know,
because Sarny was coming in struggling and then what happened.
They got out worked, sorry beat them, they got out work.
Sirza was really really good in now and he always

(30:06):
seems to play well James Brampton Mississauga as well when
they were in the Mississauga Steel Line, so they got
a good goalie, it worked really hard. They got a
good coach at Alan Latang, who is probably one of
the best coaches in the league as well. They got
some good young talent. They got Easton Wayne right over there,
they got Felac over there at the first first pick,

(30:28):
Alexandro di Audio. So you know, so they got some
good young talent. And the steel Head's got to be
ready to play. They got to be ready to compete
right from the opening whistle. Can't be like Sue Saint Marie.
I'm gonna say for last game, it can't be from
the beginning where Sue Saint Marie was dominating them. Jack
Ian Covid pretty much had to, you know, bail them
out a little bit. Twenty shots on goal in the

(30:52):
first period for Sue Saint Marie, right, So I can't
have that against Sarny, especially in their barn. It's a
tough barn to play in. And so they got out
worked them. That's number one. Just outwork them and they
should be okay.

Speaker 1 (31:04):
Yeah, I think it's big too. And the Seedlings have
done a pretty good job of starting off well in
games this year. I think that was a little bit
of a blip there in that game against the against
Assuse Marie Greyhounds. But but you're right, I mean, especially
on the road it's it's tough when you get off
to it to a bad start and you're just playing
from behind the eight ball, especially you know in a
place like Sarnia, the crowd is going to be hawking

(31:24):
on Friday night, so it's you know, it's it's definitely
something that if you can get out, if you can
take the crowd out of it early, it's always a
big plus when you're playing a team like that. And
like you said, they got a lot of young talent.
I mean, it's not just like it's you know, a
hard working team that that doesn't really have much there.
They got a ton of young talent and a team
that I think will be will be really good in
a couple.

Speaker 2 (31:44):
Of years, oh for sure. And you know one guy
that's gonna go back there too bad. It wasn't two
guys that are going back to that got drafted by
the Sarniest thing, Portmarton and Angus MacDonell. Angus macdel unfortunately
probably won't be in the lineup for that game, but
port of martone will. So you know, he's always into
that extra pushing portomartone step every time he plays. He
he loves to play against Sarnia so especially in their barn.

(32:06):
So we'll see what happens there. Should be it should
be a good one. And uh uh, but they got
to get traffic because the last time they played against
each other, I didn't find that they had enough traffic
in front of Serzcha. Uh. They need more of that
in front of him. So uh, we'll see what happens.
Should be a good game.

Speaker 1 (32:21):
Though, Yeah, like you said, played well, and that's kind
of due to that fact where he kind of saw
all the shots and and there was not a whole lot,
you know, going on in front of him. So you
have that game on Friday, then you have the game
in Sagan on Saturday, the Silent's heading out to to
Michigan and and another, I mean a tough, tough game
against a team that we know about, uh about Michael

(32:43):
mes So we know about the points that he's putting
up and the season that he's having in his draft year.
But not just him, I mean, they got a lot
of guys on that team that there are quality, quality players.
And again it's a it's gonna be you know, it's
it's definitely not easy to go into these places and
and and win road in this league.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
No, no, definitely not. And it's a back to back,
second of a back to back and Sarnia and then
right after Sarnia off to huff the Sagana. Not easy.
So yeah, they got I mean Michael Misa. Of course,
we know it's going to be the battle of the
Mesa brothers, and we know how they like to play
against each other in a friendly way. Of course, Michael Lisa.

(33:21):
I thought he played pretty well in that hl USA
Top Prospects game, right in the same line of Martone.
But they got him. They got Joey Willis as well,
a guy that could score goals on the back end,
Zane Perek. It'd be interesting to see Zane Perek. Actually
he took a match penalty against the Winter spit Fires.
We don't know yet. I'm wondering if he's going to
be I think a match penalty is an automatic two

(33:43):
game suspension, so for a cross check to the face
on Martin on Windsors. So I actually had somebody that
sent that to me and said, what do you think
is five? I'm like, well, I don't know. I guess so,
you know, so it kind of look a little bit whatever,
But I'm pretty sure if a match, so it's two games,
so be interesting to see if Saint pers playing in

(34:04):
that game. The league is going to review that. That's
up to the league. But another good defense when they
had back there Androc another good goaltender. Of course, they
played like almost every game for the Saga Spirit, right.
I mean they got Caleb Pappano and he played against
the Winter Spitfires. I think they lost like seven to
nothing or something, there's seven to one or whatever it was.
So yeah, so anticipate ange Roke to play against the Steelheads,

(34:26):
and it's gonna be tough because these guys they four
checked Brendan. They come hard at you then, and they
got that person up there. I remember he scored running
it overtime against the steel Right, So it's their tough team.
They come at you and they come at you hard.
So you better get that puck out of there, and
especially on their defense. Four check on their defense, get

(34:48):
some turnovers over there and otherwise if they start getting
on the defense and steel Heads can't get it out
of there, look out, it's gonna be a tough It's
going to be a tough night.

Speaker 1 (34:57):
For the steel Heads for sure. And you said, you
know Hendry Oak plays a lot of games. I just
looked at it at his stats here, I knew he
played a lot of games. So he's played twenty games
this year. The Caleb Caleb Papino has played four games,
four of them. So so yes, Andrew Oak always in

(35:17):
the net for sagan On. He's a good one though,
Like I mean, he's he's the guy back there that
that's always solid. So that should be uh yeah, yeah,
should be good. Should be a good weekend here on
the road. And then we definitely need to talk about
the School Day game coming up because that's gonna be
on Wednesday after this airs. That's a first school Day
game of the year. I do think there's two of

(35:38):
them this season, Yeah, in Brampton. This first one against
the Gwelph Storm and last year was against the gwelfh
Storm I think as well. So a little interesting here that, yeah,
that we get to see the gwelf Storm again. But
school Day always a great you know, initiative to get
all the kids out there. And the first time it's
going to be in Brampton.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
Yeah, that's gonna be a lot of fun, right, so
uh wow, Yeah, it's gonna be for Storm team. Though,
from the last time they played each other when it
was a ten to one game, Golfstorm had a slew
ton of injuries. Rlison was out of the lineup. Luchenko
just came back. You could tell he was just kind of,
you know, a little bit rusty that game and whatnot. Uh,

(36:15):
They're gonna have a lot of guys back for that game.
Uh yeah, So it's gonna be a lot better Gulf
Storm team, that's for sure. And uh, it's gonna be
a good challenge. I mean, Gillespie's really good in that
Cam Allen back there on defense. Like I said, Arleson
up there, Carabella up there, Uh, Jette, Luchenko up there.
They got they got some talent, and they got of

(36:37):
court Quinnboshane. How can I forget about Quinn Boshane as well,
another talented player for the Storm. So h again, you
gotta work the Coreys still the coach team. You gotta
work Cory Stillman coach team and you win. You don't
out work at Corey Stillman coach team, you lose, bottom line,
And I'm sure James Richmond same thing. You all work
at James Richmond team you win because these are coaches
that are good coaches, and they they're both well established.

Speaker 1 (37:01):
Yeah, I number said it, and you always look forward
to those games too, because you know, the energy in
the building is there right from the from the start,
so it's it's always interesting to see that. But yeah,
this GELF team, like you said, it's a different team
than when the Steelheads won ten to one. So I
hope you know that there's there's not too much of
thought from the team of that game, uh, that that
they won tend to one because obviously it's going to

(37:24):
be a different test coming up this time. And I
think it's interesting too. You know, jetl Chenco, a guy
who was loved by John Tortorella and in Philadelphia coming back,
so obviously that's a huge piece to get back. You said,
you know, it was his first game back. You know,
he's kind of just getting into the swing of things
playing with with Gwelp again, so it'll be interesting to
see him even you know, a guy who's who's leading

(37:45):
the team in points right now in defenseman in Cam
Allen on the back end with with twenty points and
twenty one games. So it's it's you know, it's a
team that will definitely pose some uh some issues for
the Steelheads and and it should be a good one
on school day.

Speaker 2 (37:59):
Interested to see though the gwelf Storm. I mentioned this
on the broadcast Brendan On on Sunday against the Sue Greyhounds.
It's gonna be interesting to see what the gwelf storm
do with the trade deadline. It really is gonna be
interesting because they got they I feel they have some
talent that they can like. They're not gonna compete this year.
There's no doubt in my mind they're not gonna compete

(38:20):
for championship. Right It might make they might make the playoffs,
but championship I don't think so. So they have definitely
have some guys' assets to sell. And you know the rumors,
rumor mills fly about Lochenko going here, the Chenk's gonna
go their trade deadline, whatnot, Cam Allen's gonna go somewhere, whatnot.
So interesting to see what they do with the trade deadline. Right, So,

(38:43):
but this month is going to be very very key
for them, So we'll see what happens.

Speaker 1 (38:47):
Yeah, one hundred percent. Like you said, it's it's not
the year for them obviously to contend. You could see
them making the playoffs. I mean, they're not too far
out of it right now, sitting in last place in
the Western Conference. But with you know, eight teams making if,
there's always an opportunity for you to get in. All right,
So we got about five minutes left here before we
wrap things up, but we got to talk about the
CHL prospect game against the US National Development Program two

(39:10):
steel Heads, Porter Marton, who's the captain of team CHL
and Jack Avankovic. Ivan Covid gets into the second game
just kind of what did you think of the whole
sort of mini tournament. I guess you could call it
between the two sides.

Speaker 2 (39:22):
Well, I can be honest with you, the first game
was kind of a you know, it was all it
was all CHL, right, I mean the USA couldn't really
do anything. I know they didn't have James Hagen's playing
in the game for their top prospect, the USA. But
I don't understand one thing. Why can't why can't NC
double A players play in that game? I think that's

(39:44):
what killed maybe the US, do you know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (39:46):
Yeah, I mean I think it's just because it's the
like it's one team. The US development program. Yeah, like
it's not.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
Maybe, so do you think maybe if they were allowed
to maybe NC double A players were allowed to kind
of jump in here. But I know it's just the
NAS develop program and whatnot.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
But yeah, I think that's yeah.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
You know, but what I think about that? So, I
mean what I think about that game. Yeah, CHL dominated
in the first game. I think they dominated the second.

Speaker 1 (40:11):
Yeah, they did.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
So when I think about Port of Marton, it was
absolutely phenomenal. It was all over the ice. He played
on the line. It was pretty much him and Misa
and all him and Mesa were just absolutely phenomenal playing together.
So and don't forget those these guys have been good.
These guys are good friends, right, they know each other
and whatnot. So he was great all over the ice
Ivan Covid. Yeah he got in the second game. I

(40:34):
made some really really key staves near the end of
the game to keep that game tie when it was
one to one at the time. Right, And he's so quick,
Jack ivan Covid. He's so good I find at at
positioning and whatnot. So just an overall game. But I
was really impressed with the both of them.

Speaker 1 (40:55):
Yeah, I was too. I think like you said, Marton,
it was it's kind of you know what he does
with Brampton. It's like maybe obviously he puts up the
points as well, but even outside of that, he just
does so much on the ice that could go unnoticed
as well besides the points. And I think that's kind
of even more so what makes him the draft prospect
that he is. And I thought he looked really good

(41:16):
as well. And then I have a covic like you said,
I mean, there was two or three saves in that
third period, and it's tough when you don't see a
lot of shots. I think they only had twelve in
the game the US team did so when you don't
see a lot of shots and it's tough to stay
engaged in the game. But obviously he was able to
do it and made some big saves down the stretch.
A couple other OHL players I think that I noticed
quite a bit watching that game. One was Malcolm Spence.

(41:38):
We know about him, oh yeah, playing an eerie and
then also Matthew Shafer. He looked amazing in those two
games on the back end as well for the CHL team.

Speaker 2 (41:46):
Yeah, those two are really good. I mean, you could
tell you you know why Matthew Shafer is going to
be a top four pick for sure. Some guys having
the number one, some guys have the number two, three, four, whatnot.
For me, it's gonna be top four. Wherever he goes,
team's going to get a beauty. I mean, this guy
goes into that herd. He's very very smart on the
back end. He knows exactly where to go and whatnot.

(42:07):
I mean, he's just an overall great defenseman, right, And
those are the kind of guys you like. And you
gotta like Malcolm Spence. He another guy for the eerie
otters too. As you said, the way he finds the
open spaces too. He's able to get to the dirty
areas Malcolm Spence and get those goals. And he's got
a great shot as well. He's very very high I
Q as well. So both both of these guys, I

(42:27):
think Malcolm Spence should be top fifteen in my opinion, maybe,
but Matthew Shaffer will be top four.

Speaker 1 (42:33):
Yeah, I think so too. And I think even for
Matthew Shaffer in his draft year, I think there's a
possibility of maybe a World Junior yeah, you know, call
getting to play in that I think we'll see you know,
maybe a couple of Steelens playing in that, but I
could see that for for Matthew Shaeffer as well. So
looking forward to it to that. It's it's actually coming
up pretty soon the world Jagers. Now, I mean, there's

(42:54):
gonna be some guys going to going to training camp
pretty soon. So should be interesting to see. Yeah, I
don't know exactly when it starts.

Speaker 2 (43:02):
I'm hearing the eighth or something. Okay, Okay, I don't
know I'm hearing I don't know for sure, eight six, seven, eight,
I don't know, something like that. Probably the last game
for the uh, it's going to be the six for
any play or before the six probably and then they're
going to go to training camp whoever gets invited.

Speaker 1 (43:23):
But anyways, right in the tournament this year in Ottawa too,
so pretty close, not too not too much travel for
for anybody playing, you know, in the in the Ohl
and around here. All right, so we will finish things
off there Mikey quickly. We got like a minute two
minutes left. If you got anything for me, let's let's
hear it.

Speaker 2 (43:41):
All right, Okay, well you know what, I really don't
get much just uh, just this time. You know, a
watch where you're going. And uh, you know, if if
somebody bumps into you, or you bump into somebody, it's
nice to them to say, oh sorry, you know, my
sorry about that. You know somebody doesn't say sorry, then

(44:01):
you know that bothers me. That's tough to say. So say,
you know, if somebody just be just be nice. Somebody
bumps into me, and you know, I say by accidents
for example, you know you're in the grocery store, I'll
see you know, you're like, well, you know, sorry about that.
You know, if somebody bumps you and they don't say anything,
they look at you like they want to, you know,
give you a coco beware head butt or something or
whatnot right, and you.

Speaker 1 (44:23):
Know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (44:23):
And it's just like, you know, you look at them
and just look at you, and it's like come come on, really,
you know, they just be nice people. Life's too short.
That's all hard to say.

Speaker 1 (44:31):
Yeah, it be nice to be cordial in those situations.

Speaker 2 (44:34):
You know.

Speaker 1 (44:36):
Yeah, big words, big words on trout talk. That's what
we do here. All right, we will finish things off
with that. Brendan leg mikey K, thank you so much
for listening. Uh, we've talked about it on the on
the show, but we do in the school day coming up.
That's on Wednesday, so should be good. A couple of
games this past weekend as well. So thank you so

(44:57):
much for listening. This is trout Talk. You're on song
nine sixty a m. And have a great day everyone.

Speaker 3 (45:03):
