Speaker 2 (00:24):
Hello, and welcome back to trout Talk here on Saga
nine sixty Am. I'm Brendan Lang along with mikey K,
Mike Caerfelitis, and Zach Bodenstein joining us today. The third
member of our crew was on last season. First time
we can have him on here in season number two
of trout Talk. This is episode number seventeen of season
number two, getting close up on the holidays here. So

(00:46):
the Steeler's just finishing out their schedule before they get
that eight day break. Before we get into the Steelheads.
Usually we talk about what's going on, Mike. You we
usually share, you know, our boring lives every week. So
let's go to Zach. Let's see what he has to say.
What's been calling odd Man. It's been a while you've
been on the show.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah, good to be back with you boys. I mean,
we're seeing each other at the rink all the time,
so everything's the same there. But nice to jump on
here with you guys. Life's been busy, you know, this
broadcast industry is all over the place, So that's kind
of where I've been. But things are fine. Super excited
to get into the holiday season and get that going,
hopefully planning a trip right before the ohl playoffs. I

(01:21):
obviously want to be here by the time the Sealers
can get in the playoffs. But yeah, super excited for
that and just to keep working. That's that's that's all.
That's all it is.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
That's all it is.

Speaker 4 (01:31):
Dude.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
It's been like a year since you've been on here.
It's just working, that's it. That's that's all that's been
going on.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Life, life's in the way, were social life right, It's
it's all of it. Trying to catch up on sleep.
I get any sort of sleep at this point is
a bonus. So took today off because last night we
had the game so that was awesome and I'm feeling
feel invested today.

Speaker 5 (01:51):
All right.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Good back to back to work tomorrow as well. Mikey,
how have you been doing? How have you been doing
the last couple of weeks. We didn't have an episode
last week, so.

Speaker 5 (01:59):
No, we don't know not so you know, everything's good,
everything's good, same old thing, you know, groundhog Day. The
birds are chirping, the chipmunks are climbing trees, you know,
stuff like that. I actually saw I saw a really
cute chipmunk the other day, you know, and the way
it was eating its nut, you know what I mean,
it's just so it's just so cool. You just stare
at them and they just look at you like they
think you're gonna steal their nut, right, and.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
It's just kind of like he was eating a piece
of chocolate cake.

Speaker 5 (02:23):
Yeah, all yeah, you know, they they love their They
chipmunks love their they love their nuts. But anyway, everything's good,
you know right. So uh yeah, yeah, Groundhog Day, buddy,
that's all she said. That's the way she goes. That's it.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
That's it.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Yeah, same with me.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
You know, again being around the rink because there's a
kind of uzac you talked about it, but a midweek
game for the Steelers, it feels kind of weird going
to the rink during the middle of the week and
it feels like a weekend when you get there, and
it's like, you know, it just shouldn't be happening. But
they got to get their games in. Of course, they
have the holiday break coming up here and just a
bit their last game coming up on just Umber twentieth,
that's I guess a week from this pass Rider. This

(03:03):
upcoming Friday, I should say, is the final game before
the holiday break. So let's talk about the recent stretch
of play here, and we can kind of start with
the game on Friday in Niagara. The Steelheads lose that
one by a score five to four. Mikey, you were there,
so so what did you see in that game?

Speaker 5 (03:21):
Well, I mean got off to a really really you know,
slow start. I mean race for the puck and alex
Osadorian he seems to always score against the Steelheads. It's
another guy, even when he was a Subbury Wolf and
you want to race to the puck and he just
it was like a perfect shot, beat Ivan Covid to
make it one and nothing. And then after that it

(03:43):
just kind of went back and forth, back and forth.
And then some turnovers. Some turnovers really cost the steel
Heads in that game. And if it was it for
the turnovers, steel Leads out played them, they really did.
And Owen Flores again just making save after save and
making these gloves saved. It's just like cold, when's this
guy gonna stop? Right? So he's been doing it all year.

(04:04):
He's been doing doing a great job. And yeah, that
was pretty much it. Really it was their goaltending, what
are their goaltending and their turnovers? Steelheads that were absolutely
uh winning that game one hundred percent. So what are
you gonna do? I mean, it's one of those games, right,
And you know, Niagara, they've been starting Flores for like
almost every game, it seems like, right, And if I'm

(04:24):
a Niagara fan, I might be concerned. Maybe they're gonna
he's gonna get burnt out. So, I mean, I know
they do have Charlie Robertson as their backup, but I
just think he's gonna get burnt out. I think it's
going to be a problem for them going moving forward
if he gets hurt or something. Forget about it. So yeah,
then that's that's the way she goes and that's the

(04:44):
way she went to the Niagara.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
Yeah, Flora's has definitely been one of the reasons why
Niagra is going to be in the playoffs for the
first time in a long time. I think it would
be a massive collapse of epic proportions at this point
if the Ice Dogs were not to make the playoffs,
So good for them. Good for that fan base. We
know people with the organization, so happy for them to
to get back to their winning ways, and for the
players too. I mean, to have a losing culture like
that takes a toll. So it's great to see a

(05:09):
new regime in there with Ben Boudrou behind the bench
and for them to win some games. I'm pretty much
on board with Mike here. I mean, top line continued
to do their thing against the Ice Donks, but without them,
I don't know where the Steelheads really would have been.
They played a good game, but at the end of
the day, other people we're talking about this game specifically,
other people have to put the puck in the net.
We know that depth started to pick up in terms

(05:31):
of the offense later on when we get into these
other games, but for that game particularly, it was the
top line, some blown coverage, some goals that Jack ivan
Covid doesn't typically let in. Just not a great recipe.
But they only lost by one on the road. Given
all that, so it's still about health that continues to
be a thing for the Steelheads. Obviously we have guys
at World Junior camps right now, but health has been

(05:53):
an issue the entire season. Let's remember, guys, this team
is built for March April May potentially. I'm not too
concerned guys about you know, how they're playing without all
these guys in the lineup. It's going to be about
how it all molds together in March and April. Obviously,
you want them to be together to find their foot
aid and get the chemistry going. But all things considered,

(06:16):
I'm liking what I'm seeing, especially on the offensive side
of things.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, I mean, you're right with all the guys out,
and there's gonna be some deals probably made as well
that are going to compliment what they already have moving
a past. Like you said, they're built for March and
April hockey, and I think that's kind of where they're
going to be heading with that game in Niagara though,
of course, I think they were the better team just
it was really the five goals were five defensive zone breakdowns,

(06:40):
like they just they broke down five times. They allowed those,
and other than that, they looked like the stronger team
in that game. So they lose that game on the
road on Friday night, they come back home for a
game on Sunday as a Teddy Bear Toss game against
the Eerie Otters and the Seals also lose that one
five to four. It goes to overtime, but Adam Zidlicky
scores the Teddy Bear toss winner. Zach will give you

(07:02):
credit on that one. You did pick Adam Zidlicky score
the Teddy Bear toss goal. So it was I think
it was a game where again the Steelheads pushed back
in the third period. They didn't have much for the
first two periods, but then they really pushed back in
the third. And you like to see that kind of
effort from that team when they were down but still
finding a way to get back in that game, but

(07:22):
ultimately losing it over touch.

Speaker 5 (07:24):
Yeah, the you nailed it right there. I mean, what
else can you say the third period they came out
hard and but in the first period that's what killed them.
I mean, that's what killed them, one hundred percent. They
just kid ere He came out, they got they got
a lot of speed. That team's got a lot of
speed and they're very They're a big team, so they
were handing the steel leedgs in their own zone and

(07:44):
they did a good job and they deserve to win
that game, right and then that just proves that you've
got to play sixty minutes, and especially against the team
like the Arie Otters. Pan Femus was good. Matthew Shafer
man seeing him for the well, I mean for the
first time in Brampton and he's I sawhim and eerie whatnot.
But man, he's he's he's something I'll say, like he

(08:05):
really controls that back end. But they deserve to win
that game. A little bit too little, too late, and
that just that just says what James Richmond's been talking about.
You got to keep them pedal to the medal and
you got to play sixty minutes and they didn't do
that against the Area Otters, and the Area Otters did
and kudos to them, and they are well I don't
know if they played sixty maybe about forty five, but
you know they did enough to win that game. And yeah,

(08:29):
so there you go. That's the way she goes.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
It's a few games in a row now where the
steel Ads have started slow and they've had to claw
themselves back in games. It's not a recipe for success.
It's not characteristic of this team either. Let's remember at
the beginning of the year, how many times they were
scoring within the first minute, maybe even the first shift
of the hockey game, so not typical of the Steelheads.
But again, guys are out of the lineup, other guys

(08:51):
have to step up. Talk about being burnt out. Maybe
the guys up front are burnt out. They're playing elevated
roles that they're not typically used to playing, and to
their credit, they're doing a job. It's just really tough
to overcome the losses that they've they've suffered, but they're
starting to get healthier. Like we said, by trade deadline,
they should be pretty much one hundred percent healthy. And

(09:11):
then if James Richmond elects to make trades, which were
ninety nine point nine percent, sure.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
He's nine point nine.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
As close as as certainty as we could be, right,
I mean, so growth to add to the team, but
most importantly, they are going to be healthy with the
guys they already have. And that's a team that was
ranked number one in the CHL rankings pre season on paper,
so we know the team's really good when they're together,
and they're only going to add. So again I'm not
too concerned. But slow starts, like you said, have been

(09:41):
a bit of a theme lately and not particularly a
good one.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
I'm telling you right now, they're going to get back
up to that number one spot. They're going to get
back to that top ten after the trade deadline, mark
my words.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
There you go, we'll cut that. We'll bring it back
up when when it happens, Yeah, in March when they
headed to the playoffs.

Speaker 5 (09:59):
I guess.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Quickly before get to our guests here, we're gonna have
Finn Harding on the show. Today. We can talk about
the most recent game, and that was on Wednesday night.
Talked a little bit about the midweek game, but the
Steelheads really shorthanded in that one, the most shorthanded we've
seen all season long. That's against the that was against
the Branford Bulldogs. So you take all the injuries, you
have Portmartone, Carson Raykoff, Jack ivan Kovic, they're at Team

(10:22):
Canada World Junior camp. And then you take Adam Zidlicki,
who's probably been your best depth player all season long.
Add that in with the defenseman in Yakofibcar and for
how they were short handed yesterday, you have to really
like the effort that they gave.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
Yeah, I don't think that's a game that Jaye McKee
is really like patting his guys on the back saying,
good job boys, he got the two points. I think
that's a game that they should have won, like eight
nothing on paper, and they didn't. It took them to ot.
What a game from some of the Steelheads in particular,
I thought Gamee Shirat has played a really good energy
role and showed some offensive upside in his OHL career.

(10:57):
He took it to another level playing with Luke mean
great to see Luke Misa drive that top line extend
the point streak to thirteen. He's been unbelievable since the first,
you know, eight to ten games of the year started
a little bit slower on the offensive side of things.
So really like the way some of those guys stepped up.
Spencer Sova and Finn Harding, who will talk to you?
I think you want to ask Finn what his ice
time was on Wednesday because we.

Speaker 5 (11:19):
Don't have an emission ever got off the ice.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
Got to be over thirty, right, So I stepped up.
Guys stepped up, for sure, But again I don't think
it's a convincing win from the Branford Bulldogs, who, by
my measures, have kind of disappointed this year, like we
thought they'd be a lot better than they are. They're
still a good team, they're probably still a contender, but
it was not a convincing win over the shorthanded Steelheads,

(11:41):
missing eleven regulars whatsoever.

Speaker 5 (11:44):
You know what though, hard work, smart work, hard work,
and we met, we talked about that intermission, Brendan, you know, Zach.
We talked to jar about it as well, you know,
insider meeting, and that's what they did. They out worked them.
They all worked the brand. The Branford Bulldogs out left
passes were absolutely phenomenal. They outlet out of their own zone,

(12:05):
the way they were four checking, the way they were
causing turnovers in that defense. Lucas Moore was given the
puck up, Roberts was given every defenseman was giving the
puck up back there and they didn't know what to
do right And it's nice to see and it's nice
to see Aid and Lane of course get his first
Toidchow goal. He played a real good part of that.
Uh that victory or victory, well not loss, but you

(12:26):
know it should could have been a victory, let's just
say that. But nice to see the hard work, the
hard work boy, especially with all these aps and these
call ups that were up. Stevens getting his first Toychell
point as well, uh Man first cho goal for Martin
Vasulik as well.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (12:42):
I think that was Martin Vasulik's best game of the
year as well against the Branford Bulldogs. So uh good
to see the team effort. I just can't wait till
everybody comes back and they're gonna feed off this. I'm
just telling you right now, and it's coming soon. It's
coming soon, folks, look.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
Out, definitely coming soon with everybody getting healthy. You talked
about some first yesterday, Manny and Motto also getting on
the board as well, get his first point in the
Ohl too. So we'll throw it a break now. Come
back on the other side, we'll talk to Rapid Steele
has defenseman Finharding And you're listening to trout Talk here
on Saga nine sixty am.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
No Radio, No Problem. Stream is live on Saga nine
sixty am dot.

Speaker 5 (13:35):
C A.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
And welcome back to trout Talk here on Saga nine
sixty am. I'm Brendan Blang along with mikey K, Mike
Caerphelitis and Zach Bodenstein. Joining us here today three broadcasters
for the Brampton Steelheads and now joining us on the
show Steelheads Defense, but assistant Captain Finn Harding Finn, thanks
for coming on. How are you doing today?

Speaker 4 (14:10):
Hey guys, what's up? Thanks for having me?

Speaker 5 (14:11):
Happy to be He looks like he just got up there. Fantastic.

Speaker 6 (14:16):
No, no, no, I came from practice, rushed over the
rush rush hours, got me tired though.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Maybe that's what you're seeing, gotcha, gotcha?

Speaker 5 (14:23):
Well you got the hear going on, you know, you
got the hockey hair going on and stuff. I don't know.
It just looks like you woke up. So I'm sure
looking good, buddy, looking good?

Speaker 2 (14:33):
All right, So I guess we could start with this past.
These past few games, obviously, guys have been really shorthanded.
We can talk about the game yesterday too, that was
on Wednesday against the Branford Bulldogs. We were just discussing
missing eleven players. I mean, what were you guys thinking,
you know, going into that game with being so shorthanded.

Speaker 4 (14:50):
Yeah, you know, I didn't know it was eleven. That's
a lot.

Speaker 6 (14:53):
But you know we're gonna acknowledge in the room. You know,
they were missing a lot of good guys and key
guys at that and you know, we just kind of
next man up kind of thing. You know, we had
a lot of young guys that you know, wanted to
make their mark and show up, and I think for
the older guys like myself, it was time to you know,
step up and and and really come to play.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
And you know, I think, I know.

Speaker 6 (15:12):
We lost in overtime, but I think it was a
great effort from all the way up and down the lineup,
and you know, we we played the right way and
it just it didn't go away at the end there,
but you know, really strong effort. I think it was
a great game from everybody.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
Yeah, I wanted to ask you about your ice time, Finn,
like you and Spencer sova, it seemed like you guys
didn't leave the ice and you had to be relied
upon in a game like that. So do you know
what the ice time was after yesterday's game?

Speaker 6 (15:38):
Not quit suuring the exact number, but it was over
thirty I think I hear fot it was that thirty mark.

Speaker 4 (15:43):
But yeah, it was quite a bit. But you know,
luckily we've uh.

Speaker 6 (15:46):
We've been working hard in the gym with Benna and
he's got our conditioning right, so it was we were
ready for it for sure.

Speaker 5 (15:52):
Yeah. I just so you know what, man like I
we've talked about this already, but you know, we had
an interview with you and your brother, like, how awesome
is that player with your brother? I mean, I keep
saying this. I wish I wish I had a brother
to play with, like to play ohl or do that.
I hadual older sisters, which is fine, but you know,
like playing with your brother, rooming with your brother and

(16:14):
ire he uh, what an accomplishment man like you guys
must have been like just a cloud nine. Tell me
about your family again, how that felt and whatnot, because
I know your mom. I saw your mom actually at
the at the game, and she was just like they, well,
thank you for the interviewing or whatnot. And she's very emotional,
like in a good way. She's just a good person.
And your dad too. You come from a good family.

(16:35):
So talk to me about uh, talk to me about
that whole experience.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
Thanks to about that whole experience.

Speaker 6 (16:40):
Sorry, yeah no, thanks, by the way, I appreciate those comments.
But yeah, you know, it was it was surreal to
be able to play with them, and we always kind
of joked about it, you know, him being the lefty,
me being the right D you know, s being D partners,
and you know, for it to actually come to fruition
is insane. And we're super grateful for the games we
had and hopefully the future games we have. And yeah,
like you said, Mom's very passionate. I think a couple

(17:03):
of tiers were shed those first few games, you know,
and what she saw us on the ice, which is
pretty cool. And you know, those these moments are moments
will share forever and talk about forever. But yeah, like
you said, like it was a super cool playing with
my little bro and you know, being able to drive
up to the rink with them and and and prep
with them, warm up and and then line up with
them and on face off and get to play with them.

Speaker 4 (17:22):
It's, uh, it's special for sure, and.

Speaker 6 (17:24):
You know, never forget it, and you know, hopefully we
get more games together.

Speaker 4 (17:27):
That's that, that's the plan.

Speaker 5 (17:29):
So awesome.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Yeah, yeah, that obviously is really cool. And I want
to talk to you about another guy that that you've
been playing with, uh very often this year in Spencer
Sova of course coming over in the off season. What
has it been like kind of meshing with him and
being able to play with him on the back end.

Speaker 6 (17:45):
Yeah, not about de partner, Eh, he's uh, he's been great.
He's got those wheels, he's he's an unreal player, unreal
offensive d man like.

Speaker 4 (17:55):
He plays both ends really well and makes my job
very easy.

Speaker 6 (17:58):
And you know, yeah, we've been hanging around off ice
and hanging around on ice trying to you know, build
chemistry and and and get closer. And he's one of
my great buddies. And he's a great guy off the ice,
which is even more important. But yeah, he's been really
fun to play with this yere and hopefully we can
keep building off of what we've what we've done so
far and keep that momentum going for later on in

(18:19):
the season when it counts.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
Well, you've seen a lot of maturity in your game.
Fin defensively, the numbers are awesome, especially the the the
apples are great. Uh, the plus minus is awesome too,
But what are some of the things that you've been
working on that to get to this point and maybe
even further. We know that the Pittsburgh Penguins have been
scouting you quite a bit at the home games especially,
So what are some of the things that maybe they're

(18:41):
telling you to work on and what your coaching staff
and Brampton's been telling you as well.

Speaker 6 (18:45):
Yeah, for sure, playing my my my identity is the
big one. You know, being hard to play against, being
able to shut down those top lines night in and
night out, and you know, making their life miserable a
little bit on the ice. And but also of being
able to you know, transition pucks and chip in offensively.
Like you said, you know, I'm trying to create some
offense as well, and it helps the team a secondary

(19:07):
scoring rather you know my game. But you know, definitely
being hard to play against defensively and then being able
to move move pucks up with a good first pass
and you know, help out when I can get in
the offensive zone and and and keep it there and
create chances.

Speaker 4 (19:19):
So that's the one thing I've been working on.

Speaker 6 (19:21):
Would be probably the defensive side of things, but also
trying to branch out a little bit as well.

Speaker 5 (19:26):
You definitely have Before I get to my question, you
definitely have a career in broadcast. The way you talk,
the way you talk right now, You're you're a studio
guy all the way all the way, it comes to you,
then goes over there and then Finn puts it.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
But I appreciate that.

Speaker 5 (19:45):
So I just you know, did you know Kyle Dubis
was out the game last night and I didn't want
to talk you Obviously, I'm not gonna you know, we
don't want to say nothing until now. Dubis was a
game last night and he was an eerie So obviously
he's been following you around really high on you the
Pittsburgh Penguins. So have you talked to mister Dubis at
all every time anytime he's been in the arenas?

Speaker 4 (20:08):
No, Yeah, I wasn't aware he was.

Speaker 6 (20:09):
He was at both those games and tried to do
my best when he was there, of course. And yeah,
I've spoken with him before. He's awesome, just awesome. Just
spoke with him my camp. I didn't speak of them
after any of those games, but at camp, and you know,
he welcomed me with open arms. You know, the organization
and super special moment to be able to you know,
talk to him and get to know him a little

(20:30):
bit for sure.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
And on the point of the Pittsburgh Penguins, tell us
about your draft experience, you know, you're getting picked in
the NHL draft. And then also after that getting to
go to camp and experiencing that kind of pro side
of the game as well.

Speaker 4 (20:44):
Yeah, getting drafted was unreal.

Speaker 6 (20:47):
Uh, just a real real moment, you know, to share
that with with my family in our living room, and
you know, we were watching from the screen and I
had no idea, like I guess everyone else was watching,
but you know, when I saw my name pop up,
it was it was super awesome to be be able
to share that moment and have that moment, and yeah,
it's one of those things that you take a second
to appreciate, but then you know, onto the next thing
and and you just taking.

Speaker 4 (21:08):
His stride and got to keep working.

Speaker 6 (21:10):
But and then camp, when I went to dev camp
in main camp, just an awesome experience. H learned so
much and a lot of great guys that both those camps,
and you know, to be able to play with those
NHL guys.

Speaker 4 (21:21):
Was was awesome. Like you learned so much.

Speaker 6 (21:23):
It's one thing to see them and you know, look
from the stands, but it's another thing to be on
the ice and three feet away from them and defending them.
Like you just you pick up things that you never
even would have thought of. And it was just really
cool experience and you know, Pittsburgh and unbelievable camp, and yeah,
I learned a lot was the most important part. I
went in trying to be a sponge and took some
things out of it, which is good, and you know,

(21:45):
hoping to continue to use that oh I think you
lost Mikey, Yeah, and carry that onto this season and try.

Speaker 4 (21:52):
To make it stick. So yeah, it was super fun.

Speaker 3 (21:54):
Well that's the right attitude to have, right, just taking
all the information. I was talking to your dad on
the secon day of the draft and just you know,
hoping and praying and thinking, you know this, this guy
has to get picked. He had such an awesome year
and and gratefully you did. And obviously you seem very
humble and grateful for that. But let's talk about mom
and dad. I mean, they've been awesome obviously with us,

(22:15):
but to you and to Jared, how have they helped
you guys kind of navigate and find your way? And
I'm sure they were the first ones to you know,
give you a hug and jump on you after you
were drafted.

Speaker 4 (22:25):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 6 (22:26):
Like like you said, the parents, they're the ones that
do all the real hard work, driving us to practice
as kids and games and feeding us and putting up us,
putting up with our nonsense all that. Like they're the
real heroes and all of it. And you know, being drafted,
it's a collective. It takes it takes a village, you know,
they say, And all the coaches and and everybody and

(22:47):
everybody that has helped me along the way. They are
also you know, take absolute credit for it. But yeah,
like you said, parents, getting drafted is good for me,
but it's almost great for them too, because it's that
hard work kind of you know, mose to something a
little bit, which is kind of nice to see.

Speaker 4 (23:02):
And yeah, they've they've been the bath.

Speaker 6 (23:04):
Role models for my brother and I and you know,
hopefully we can keep proving them right, I guess if
you will.

Speaker 5 (23:10):
You know, you guys must be getting really pumped up now.
But I mean, because the way you guys played last night,
you know, some of the injuries now are going to
start to come back, and then you know, the guys
at the World Juniors they're going to come back, and
then who knows what's gonna happen after that whatnot. But
you might you personally and the veterans must be starting
to get a little bit more excited now, you know
what's what's happening.

Speaker 6 (23:32):
Yeah, for sure, Like you said, we've had a lot
of guys out the whole season with injuries.

Speaker 4 (23:38):
It's just just been unlucky a little bit.

Speaker 6 (23:40):
But luckily we have a great team and a lot
of death, so a lot of guys have been able
to step up, and you know, we've been still very
competitive this season, but yeah, when guys start filtering back in,
it's it definitely is exciting because you know, we got
a really special team here and a great tight group,
and you know, we're expecting big things this this postseason,
and so I'm excited for it.

Speaker 4 (23:59):
And I think I speak on behalf of all of
us when I say.

Speaker 5 (24:01):
That, Yeah, everybody says that. Every Like you know, Chase
la Faib says that. Everybody says that I can't believe
how tight the group is, right, Yeah, and that that's amazing.
And you know what's when I interviewed Steven last time,
Alexander Stephen just to add a piggyback on that what
you're saying, you know, first thing he said was, you know,
the guys are so welcoming to me, and and he
just seems so comfortable. He seemed like he was there

(24:22):
for like five years. You know that. And that's the
effect that you guys have, you know what I mean,
because you guys are just really really good kids. So
just to say there it is.

Speaker 6 (24:30):
Yeah, No, it's like like you said, like definitely a
good culture. And you know that starts with the coaches,
and it also starts with the former veterans on our team,
like former captains like Charlie Callahan, Chash Sharp even though
I'm aster, Luca del w like, they all kind of
instilled that James Hrdy, I'm forgetting a lot of names,
but they knew who they are. But they kind of
instilled that culture for us. And you know, we kind

(24:51):
of have grown up together a little bit, a lot
of us and and with the guys that have recently
come in, like Sova, Carsten Steveo, like you said, you know,
we just obviously welcome them like like they're brothers and
we just become this brotherhood.

Speaker 4 (25:04):
And you know, I think it's a really good group.
And I know it's you probably.

Speaker 6 (25:08):
Get that a lot, and I'm sure a lot of
people say that, but I really do mean it.

Speaker 5 (25:11):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. It's cuche, but yeah, it's recording a
real deal.

Speaker 6 (25:15):
Yeah no, I know it's easy, but I really do
mean it. And you know, I'm hoping the best, like
all of us for you know, what's to come, and
hopefully we can put it into uh into play in
the future.

Speaker 3 (25:27):
You can delifore you before you jumped in bread and
you could tell it tight. The group was when I
was at the Top Prospect scheme in Oshawa when Kobe
and Marty were playing and I saw you guys all
sitting there, and then I came to join you when
the coaches told me that you guys were there. I mean,
you could see just like the way that everybody kind
of blends together, and you can tell why there's chemistry
on the ice because everybody off the ice is having

(25:47):
a good time. So I just wanted to throw my
two cents in there, because it's very easy to tell
that you guys are just enjoying each other's company, messing
around like what I did when I was eighteen, nineteen
twenty with my buddies. I love it great a.

Speaker 6 (26:00):
Team, right, and that makes exactly Yeah, Yeah, there by
the way, Zach, that was fun.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
Great to see you. Man.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
It's fun and and a part of that culture. Obviously
you're a big part of it being an assistant captain.
You're a name to the leadership group before the season.
So how has that kind of changed your role? And
and who are some guys that maybe you learned from?
You mentioned a few names there that have kind of
helped you to to mold into that leadership role that
you're in now.

Speaker 6 (26:25):
Yeah, of course, like I said, those guys that I
named earlier, I kind of studied them a little bit
when when I was younger and they were kind of
leading and took some things off them on and off
the ice, and you know, yeah, it's definitely an honor
to have an ad for this team and this this
kind of group. But you know, I think with or
without a letter, like, we got a bunch of leaders
on this team, and so it kind of makes it

(26:46):
easy for me and other guys. But yeah, that's something
that I've definitely tried to do this season, this kind
of step into that leadership role and and and try
to help this team and and and bring that culture
that we've we've we've been instilling in the past couple
of years and keep at it.

Speaker 5 (27:01):
You and Sola have beencome really good friends. And you
can totally tell by the way you guys play together.
And I think you guys should be together all year.
I mean the way you guys have been playing. But uh,
what what an acquisition that guy has been, right, I
mean the way he plays, the way he walks the
blue line, Like does he teach you how to walk
the blue line? Just curious, like that art the way

(27:25):
he does it. Yeah, yeah, you're right.

Speaker 6 (27:29):
He's definitely electric on that blue line. And I've definitely
been watching him a little bit because you know, I
try to take something out of everyone's game, but you know,
his in particular is that is that walking the line
and always be able to patrol and and find teams.
And yeah, like I said, he's been he's been fun
to play with. So it's been good.

Speaker 3 (27:45):
And and on that note, I mean, you've been getting
a bit more power play time. Talk about that, because
offense has been a part of your game this year.
You're not compromising the defensive side, but you're getting some
power play time. That must be fun. But but with
that comes a lot of responsibility.

Speaker 4 (27:57):
To Yeah, Yeah, it's.

Speaker 6 (27:59):
Been good trying to help out where I can, and yeah,
I've gotten an opportunity this year to play on a
lot more power play, which has been nice.

Speaker 4 (28:06):
And you know, I'm just trying to capitalize.

Speaker 6 (28:07):
When I can, and yeah, without compromising the defensive side
of things, and yeah, trying to chip in as much
as I can.

Speaker 2 (28:15):
And aside from the offense. And you were talking about
things that you were trying to, you know, bring into
this season and maybe was you know, brought up by
Pittsburgh or whatever. I find at least just watching the game,
you seem to be playing with more of a physical
presence this year than I've seen in the past, and
and maybe a little bit meaner out there on the ice.
You got to fight this year as well, first time.

(28:35):
I think that's the first time I've seen you fight.
So has that sort of been like a conscious effort
to get that at into your game.

Speaker 6 (28:42):
Yeah, I definitely went into this this last offseason trying
to gain a lot of strength and a bit more
weight and size, and you know I did that, accomplished that,
which is nice. And yeah, I've definitely been trying to
be a bit meaner. If you will on the ice
and that goes with, you know, being hard to play against.
And yeah, I had a bit of a fight in Saginaw.

Speaker 4 (29:02):
And that was good.

Speaker 6 (29:03):
And then yeah, just trying to it is a bit
of a conscious effort to kind of, you know, finish
my hits when I can, and it just adds to
that being hard to play against. Yeah, I definitely kind
of added that to my bag, or tried to add
that to my bag.

Speaker 4 (29:15):
At least this season.

Speaker 5 (29:16):
That fight you got into and Saganaw, who was that
with again? And yet I would say you won that
fight just to say, and Ethan Hay was acting like
he won the World Series. I just want to kind
of throw that in there and wow, did you did
you get the boys fired up after that? Just to
say that was a big spark. But I'm not saying

(29:36):
fighting is good. Just to let everybody know, you know,
who's watching and listening out there is just part of
the game. Anyway. Yeah, great job, Ben, Yeah thanks?

Speaker 4 (29:46):
Was it your first fight?

Speaker 2 (29:47):
Was it your first fight? I just don't remember.

Speaker 4 (29:49):
I gotten the one my.

Speaker 6 (29:50):
First year, but that one was more of a wrestling match.
So yeah, if you will listen, this might have been my.

Speaker 3 (29:55):
First who's giving you the fighting tips? If anybody shout
out to.

Speaker 6 (30:01):
My guy, Ryan Young. I wrote a bit uh this
summer Ryan in boxing.

Speaker 4 (30:07):
He's no phone. He helped me out a lot and
give me some great tips.

Speaker 6 (30:10):
And you know, we we worked this summer on a
little bit of fighting and so yeah, it was good.

Speaker 5 (30:14):
Hell, i've ever seen a blue jay before?

Speaker 4 (30:17):
A blue jay?

Speaker 5 (30:18):
Yeah, like live in your face.

Speaker 4 (30:21):
I've seen one in my backyard once or twice.

Speaker 5 (30:23):
Yeah, yeah, why why do you ask? Apparently it's good luck.
Have you heard anything like that before.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
I've never heard that.

Speaker 5 (30:30):
Yeah, if you see it, blue jay's good luck. If
you see a cardinal, it's bad luck.

Speaker 6 (30:33):
All right, I'll be on the lookout for those blue
jays then, yeah, thanks, I heard.

Speaker 5 (30:37):
I think it's my family saying this stuff. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (30:39):
I've heard there's a spiritual I've heard there's a spiritual
meeting to finding cardinals. And apparently it's like somebody who's
somebody who's passed away is like visiting you or something.
A lot of theories.

Speaker 5 (30:49):
So anyway, I just thought i'd throw that in there.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
All right, we can wrap things up. I'll let you run, Finn. Thanks,
so much for coming on. You've been great so far
this year, so contained success and we'll see you around
the rink. Thanks so much for coming on. Have a
good one.

Speaker 4 (31:03):
Thanks guys, really appreciate it. Great speaking with you guys,
and I'll see you Sin. Thanks, Viann, see you, Fann.

Speaker 2 (31:09):
All right, that was steele Ed's assistant captain and defenseman
Finn Harding here on Saga nine sixty am on Troup
Talk and we'll be back right after this.

Speaker 1 (31:32):
Stream us live at SAGA nine sixty am dot c A.

Speaker 2 (31:51):
Welcome and welcome back to Troup Talk here on SAGA
nine sixty am. I'm Brendon Lang along with Mike e
k My Carefelita, Zach Fodenstein on the show today as
well three broadcasters for the Brampton Steelheads. Guys, we can
quickly talk about our conversation that we just had with
Finn Harding, and I asked him about kind of the
leadership role that he's obviously had to take on this year,

(32:13):
being an older player, being an assistant captain this year,
but you can tell the maturity is there and he
really conducts himself as a pro and I mean, obviously
that has a lot to do with the fact that
he got to go to NHL camp this year, and
obviously he's brought back some of those qualities to the team.

Speaker 3 (32:30):
One of the best people. I mean, just like Mike said,
very well spoken but positive is a huge thing. Like
it's almost weird to hear him think about getting feisty
on the ice, because I know he's just ice, but
to have that blend is awesome. He's fitting in with
the boys. Obviously, he's one of the leaders on the
team now, one of the older guys. All of a sudden,

(32:50):
seems like yesterday it was just his rookie year and
we're coming into this season and we see Finn Harding
and Parker von Richter on the back end, We're like,
are we sure these guys are capable? It's it's crazy
to think they're in their third years. So Finn's always
been one of my favorite guys on the team. Very
well spoken, easy to talk to. If his parents are listening,
you know, I love you guys already because people who

(33:11):
are always chatting. Just a great family. And to have
him paired up with his brother, like not only on
the same team, but they were out together on the
ice and number of super cool.

Speaker 5 (33:20):
That's unreal. I mean, can imagine, like my gosh, like
playing with your brother the same the same Ohl team whatnot.
But he did a good job, Jared Hardy when he
came to so really good. He moves the puck really
well out of his own zone. He's very smart, just
like his brother. His brother is very smart too. And
I'll say this again about Finn. You know everything you said,
Zach' I'd probably say the same thing. I mean, great kid, whatnot.

(33:44):
And if if I had a daughter and an older daughter
that is ready for marriage, I'll say this a guy
Ben would be the guy then would be the guy
should marry the daughter? One on you a good like
I need? Is this always smiling, good kid? Positive? What
else can you ask for? I mean, right, hey, you
say to Finn, come on over, I need your help

(34:05):
right away, right any big type of guy you say, look,
you know, can you fix my wall gear or something,
it would be like, can you be the first one?
All right, let's do this, you know what I mean?
Like he's a leader, and yeah, I just I love
the kid. Yeah, like everything exact said. That's that's it. Yeah,
if I had a daughter, you could marry, marry any
day of the week, I had arrange.

Speaker 3 (34:26):
The marriage, arrange marriages, let's do it.

Speaker 5 (34:31):
Yeah, I probably don't do that these days. You never know.

Speaker 2 (34:34):
Oh yeah somewhere for sure. Yeah, definitely still happens. But yeah,
I mean the steel Heads obviously they always talk about
about the people that they bring in and not just
the players, and I think finn Is is a perfect
example of the type of people that they bring into
the organization and obviously all the things that you guys said, Uh,
just a great guy to be around and very easy

(34:57):
to talk to. You always approachable. So big thing to
finn for coming on the program today. We do have
some or a few Steelheads games coming up here. We'll
focus on the Oushawa Generals because that's coming up tonight
after trotalk. The game starts at six o'clock, but we'll
kind of quickly talk about the next game at the
time of recording. That's on Friday against the Sudbury Wolves
in Sudbury. Mikey, you'll be down there. So what are

(35:20):
you looking for in that game?

Speaker 5 (35:21):
Look for the baby. The boys might be thinking about
a little revenge for that game, right, and I'm sure
that's on the back of their mind. You know, last
year losing to the Sudbury Wolves in the playoffs. Don't
forget the Sudbury Wolves did when they won in Mississauga
at the time in the dressing room, you know, cooting, hollering,
and it's all over social media and some of the

(35:41):
stuff they said on social media whatnot.

Speaker 3 (35:44):
It got a race though.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
But you know, don't get me wrong, this stuff's going
to be in the back of their mind, losing to
them in the playoffs. But Subury is a tough place
to play, very really tough. That a arena up there, smaller,
the fans are right on top of you. These two
teams don't like each other one bit. First meet, if
you could believe a first meeting of six all now,
between these two teams, they're going to see each other

(36:05):
a lot, right, so it should be a hard fought battle. Uh,
it's going to be a really hard fought battle. And again,
you know, we don't know who's going to be back
in the lineup, but if they play like it against
the Branford Bulldogs, it should be all right.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
Yeah, they could be getting both Lucas Krmiras and Mason
Sebeskie back for that game. That is great news. That's
both of those guys ahead of schedule. We can tell
you that now. So that's awesome. Crazy to think that
it is the first meeting between these two teams, considering
they've played the Eerie Honors a Western Conference team three
times already. So yeah, look for that. Look for this
rivalry between the Wolves and the steel Heads to only

(36:40):
build if they're playing each other six times in the
next you know, three months in change, it's gonna get
pretty feisty. And you're right, it's the first time since
that playoff meeting. Quentin Musty out with the broken hands,
so that's a break. But when you think about how
shorthanded the Steelheads are, Sunbury really didn't lose many guys
to the World Junior Camp, so it will be a
tough test. And video coach Matt Anderson was telling me

(37:02):
it's gonna be about minus twenty up there.

Speaker 5 (37:04):
Mike, Yeah, I was. I was already thinking. I was
already thinking about that, and right when, actually twenty when.
As soon as I got home last night, I didn't
believe Matt Anderson. You know, I thought maybe he was
just saying that, and so I just you know, I
looked at my phone minus twenty three. Do you believe
that minus twenty three up there? Whatever? O?

Speaker 2 (37:23):
Well know, yeah I was. I was saying, you'll be
in the warm rink, but Matt said, it's not a
warm rink.

Speaker 5 (37:30):
No it's not.

Speaker 3 (37:30):
It's not.

Speaker 5 (37:31):
Yeah, it's not. They changed everything down there though, apparently, so, uh,
you're not so crammed inside their little press box that
they have there, so you know you won't hear their
other commentators as you did before in your mic, right,
and you guys said it right, I could hear it,
you know, not anymore. They moved them, so we're in

(37:51):
different spots and stuff. So anyways, besides that, like they
still got they got coach of Delek. Still they got
I mean, they got Alex FARRONI just got his first
career o hl Hatrick, another good player. They still got
McCoy in the back end. They still got de Angels
on the back end. Kieran Walton here's a guy that's
really coming into his own right now when to pick

(38:11):
Jets draft picks as well. So if you can shut
those guys down, especially those forwards, like I said, the
Steelhets play like they did against the Branson Bulldogs. In
my humble opinion, they should be okay, and if the
goaltending is good for the steel Heads, they should be okay.

Speaker 2 (38:26):
So let's move on now to the game that's going
to be coming up after trout talk here at least
in a couple hours, a six h five start against
the Oshawa Generals on a Sunday night. So steel Heads
facing off against oshawall obviously a really strong team, but
they did lose a couple of guys to the to
the World Junior Camp. So again it's gonna be a

(38:47):
tough battle either way. But but there are going to
be the Generals will be missing a few key players.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
Yeah, just quickly because I know we're coming up on time.
But yeah, Beckett, Seneca and cal Ritchie are with the
Steelheads boys at Canadian World Junior Selection camp. So that's
a break. But when you still got to contend with
guys like Colby Barlow, like, it is still a really
good team. Jacob Bostar, They're they're a handful. And again
when the Steelheads are at full strength, I'd love to
see those two go head to head in the seven

(39:15):
game series because it might come down to that but yeah,
it's it's still a loaded Oshawa team, But like Mikey
said on the other day, it's not the same team
without cal Ritchie. When he was up with the Colorado
Avalanche at the start of the year, there's no surprise
that the General struggled. And then when they got him back,
and obviously they got the Barlow trade done, things started
to settle for them. But without cal Ritchie, he might

(39:37):
be the catalyst for that team.

Speaker 5 (39:38):
Mikey, I think so too. I mean, as soon as
you just nailed it right there, as soon as cal Richie,
or when he was with the Colorado Avalanche and he
wasn't back down yet, then you know, you could see
the Generals fan saying, when are you gonna send him down?
When are you going to send him down? Gosh, we
need him, we need him, we need him. They were struggling,
They were struggling at the beginning of the year. But
they still have a lot of good players over there,
and that's a like Torrents is over there, Luke torn Larrence,

(40:00):
they got on the front of Kobe Barlow, as you mentioned,
Buckley Buckley, So I guess those are the guys you're
going to lean on right on the back end. Morelli
is still there, Ben dan For still in the back
end too, right, Jacob Boster really good oolver age goalie.
And it's another tough place to win. Steelheads went zero
and four against this general's last year, right, And uh,
it's a tough place. It's a tough place to play,

(40:22):
really really tough place. But again part smart work, hard
work beats so and we should have the injuries, hopefully
some of the injuries back And that was.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
Right, Yeah, that's what I was going to say. I
mean that they were kind of circling that game Friday
possibly to get them back, but Sunday maybe more likely
to see as Zebeski and uh and Carmeiers back in
the lineup. And I mean two guys, especially Krmers who
was having a great year before he got hurt, kind
of as that second line center, so he's going to
be huge to get back. And then Sebeski as well,
who was I think playing his best hockey of the

(40:54):
season before this injury too, so he can hopefully jump
right back in where he was and I think the
Steelheads will definitely be successful. We should talk actually quickly
before we get to the to the last game. Excuse
me because we didn't mention it. We talked a little
bit about it, but we should talk about Aiden Lane
coming to the Steelheads and signing with them. Of course,

(41:15):
a guy who's committed to Harvard University and with the
new rules, allowed to play in the OHL now, so
probably just for two years, but even just adding him
for those two years, I mean, that's that's a big
get for James Richmond and the Steelers.

Speaker 3 (41:27):
He's a high hockey IQ guy you saw yesterday, just
made a number of plays, put the puck on the
net a number of times. Think he had like four
shots at least. Obviously scored the lake goals. So he
gets the net front, gets the trust of the coaches
to play that net front bumper position late in the
game when you're when you're seeking the tieing goal. So
a lot of good skills from him. Has the chemistry
with Kieran Wookowski from the GTA John in their minor

(41:48):
Hockey league days, so they played together. Van Volsen was
in the middle on that line too. But he's got
a lot of good tools. Obviously needs to season everything.
First game in the OHL, he only got two in
the USAHL, So this was a step up in terms
of talent by a mile. And obviously he passed the
first test, but let's start to see him get a
little bit more consistent. I think he could provide a

(42:10):
really nice, comfortable depth roll for this team once they're happy.

Speaker 5 (42:14):
Yeah, and that just adds more. That just adds more
to this team. And who when the again we have
to go back with all the injuries come back, so
you can look at this. It's kind of like I
guess a deadline deal earlier? Yeah, deal, right, I mean,
and when all the injuries come back, and again we
say we're ninety nine point nine percent sure that James
Richmond's going to make some deals. Got the trade deadline.

(42:37):
That's going to help the depth and help out a
and Lean as well. But to play Kier mckowski, you
nailed at Zach. I mean, they were really good. And
you know guy Saint Andrew's college before he came. You know,
just look at his stat's not twenty one games I
think we talked about last night, fourteen goals, twenty seven
and six forty one points, thank you very much. So
he's stick, he's strong. What I saw last night and

(42:59):
is hockey. I ugh, Zach, you nailed it right on
that said, his hockey IQ is really really good and
he's just going to get better. Because his first game
in the scores the game time goal, Like, I mean,
how do you like that?

Speaker 3 (43:09):
Unbelievable?

Speaker 2 (43:11):
It really really is awesome. And I mean not just
his first game in the oh, but he didn't even
practice with the team before the game, so I mean,
to just to go in there, and I mean it
seemed like the fit was pretty seamless. Obviously a lot
of guys playing in the lineup that are necessarily on
the roster all the time. But for him to get
in there and like you said, get that game time
goal late in the third period, and to your point, Zach,

(43:33):
getting the trust of the coaching staff to be out
there in those in those times as well, Uh, definitely
a big thing. All right. Just quickly before we wrap up,
we will talk about the another Wednesday game. We got
another Wednesday night game coming up this week as well.
Is the Branford Bulldogs again on a Wednesday. At this
time it's in Branford though obviously a rivalry there, so

(43:53):
I'm expecting another great game on that Wednesday game in
Branford they're.

Speaker 5 (43:57):
Going to come out physical. I think Branford's going to
really come out physical on that Wednesday. So the Steelheads
really have to like match their intensity, like come out intense. Again,
just hard work beats hard work. Smart work beats their talent.
I think they did a good job of the Steelers
did wrapping up largest. I know Artist he played well,
but he didn't, you know, have the game that Nick

(44:19):
Lardis usually has and whatnot. They did a good job
on him and and mister van Akro over there. You
got to stop. They're pretty much a two line team,
right and that's it after that. So he stopped the
two lines and they'll be successful, simple as that.

Speaker 3 (44:32):
Yeah, it was a game that they probably should have won.
Put up close to forty sewing for all the absences.
So credit down they played. They played great. They all
bought in, which was great to see. And and like
you said, hard work is important. And I know we
might not have time, but I just want to quickly
mention that team Canada for the World Juniors. They're playing
against you sports right now. Last last time I checked

(44:54):
three goals for Carson Raykoff, one goal for Porter Martin.

Speaker 5 (44:59):
Very good even Covid starting for the college team whatever
do you use sports? Is that crazy or what? Yeah? Yeah,
the two goalies to two for you you sports and
two for the team Canada.

Speaker 3 (45:12):
So maybe they know Kobe's tendencies then, so let's just credit.

Speaker 5 (45:17):
Yeah, sure that started, but I don't know that's what
I saw like the lines anyway. Yeah maybe, yeah, I
don't know.

Speaker 3 (45:27):
Yeah, definitely looking forward to that.

Speaker 2 (45:29):
I mean, I think uh Raykoff will be on the
team obviously, you know, as a returning player Martona, the
season that he's had, I think you probably see him
on that on that team as well. So definitely looking
forward to that. Quickly before we wrap up, Mikey life tip, Zach,
it's your first time back. You got anything for us
that we can that we can take into the next
few weeks before the holidays.

Speaker 3 (45:49):
Sure, we'll go with what's been applicable in my life.
I guess. Take chances, you know, be open to things,
be confident in yourself. It all sounds cliche, but you
put all these things together. Trust the process. You keep
working hard. You're working hard. It seems like things aren't
coming to fruition. You just keep working hard. You take
different approaches and avenues, and I think things will materialize

(46:12):
for you. So that's yeah, it's it's been a busy time,
but I'm just trying to, you know, live by that
mentality and be proud but not satisfied, celebrate your small
victories all that kind of stuff. So that's a that's
a season's worth of life here.

Speaker 4 (46:26):
There you go, not bad.

Speaker 2 (46:28):
Wow, Yeah you were banking them all for this the yes, yeah,
all right, we will wrap things up here. We gotta go.
I don't Mike, Oh, Mike, okay, give it. Let's hear it.
Let's hear it.

Speaker 5 (46:40):
Never heard my life tip yet.

Speaker 2 (46:42):
Okay, let's go.

Speaker 5 (46:44):
All right. Your chipmunks are nice to see. I'll tell
you that right now. So they're very very comforting if
you see them. All right, So if you see a chipmunk,
just watch and if you're having a bad gig, go
in the backyard. You see a chipmunk eating a nut,
and you just watch the way they do it, the
way they it's very comforting. So my lifetip is going,

(47:04):
thank you, chip bunk eating a nut. Watch you'll feel better.

Speaker 2 (47:08):
Watch the chipmunks. There we go. That'll wrap things up here.
