Speaker 2 (00:24):
Good afternoon and welcome to cliptro Chop right here on
SAGA and I sixty am, or if you're watching on YouTube,
this is episode number twenty. I believe Brendan and my
correct that's right, yes, episode number twenty right here is
the official podcast of the Brampton Steelheads. My name is
Mike Carrafelitis. You know me as mikey kay, I guess

(00:44):
in my capadre and my partner Brendan Lang with me
as always. We are broadcasters w Brampton Steelheads and Brendan
my friend. First, let's start off, how are you doing
and did you watch the Super Bowl?

Speaker 3 (00:58):
I'm doing all right. I did watch the Super Bowl,
kind of sparingly.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
I was.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
It was kind of in and out. I didn't see
the entire game. But but yeah, I mean obviously it
wasn't It wasn't a great game. I don't know how
you felt going into it. I thought the Chiefs were
going to win, and I did think that Philadelphia had
the better roster. I think that was kind of the
general sentiment around that Philadelphia was the better team. But
I just thought, you know, the Chiefs have something going

(01:24):
on that they'd be able to figure out that win.
But one of the worst games we've seen Mahomes play,
especially in a big game like that, and he was
under siege the entire night.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Like, I mean, isn't that great? Six sacks?

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Oh, it's amazing. Now, realistically, I don't really like either team,
so I wasn't I wasn't really jeering too much for
either side. But if I had to choose, I would
like to see Kansas City lose. As a Buffalo fan
and as pretty much a fan of any other team
in the league, you probably want to see them lose.
So yeah, I mean, I didn't think they would, but
Philadelphia was by far the better team, and it wasn't close.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Well say this, it was. I watched the whole game,
we had people over and stuff like that, and I'll
say that it was the best blowout I've ever watched
in my life. I was going for Philly right from
the beginning. I love the way they played. I was
cheering so hard. I loved it so much, and and
I didn't want Kansas City to break that record. I
really didn't. And being an AFC guy, I'm kind of

(02:23):
you know, I like Mahomes, I like Jalen Hurts, you know,
don't get me wrong, but I just don't like Kansas City.
I'm just sick of them, Like enough is enough, you know,
of course trying for you know, Philly, their second Super
Bowl Congratulations was so awesome to watch it. I the
best Usually blowouts, you know, you change it and whatever whatnot. No,
not me, not that. We kept it the whole time.

(02:45):
Everybody's sitting down.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
It's like, yes, so everyone, everyone you were with was
cheering for Philadelphia.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Yes, you got it? Yeah, okay, yeah, so we were
and everybody was just like, yes, more more more points,
more points, more points. I wanted them to hit h
oh yeah, oh yeah. So but you never see Mahomes
under CEM like that. That defense was so good for
Philadelphia and the offense was good. I expected Barkley to

(03:12):
have a better game than he did Saquon, but but
the Jalen Hurts was awesome. Was awesome in that game.
And if you could have gave an MVP my last
week on this, if you could have gave an MVP,
I would have gave it to the whole defense of Philadelphia.
It's kad of you know, that one player that's me.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Yeah, I mean, as you said, I thought it was
gonna be like, if they could contain Saquon Barkley, they
would have a pretty good chance of winning. But I
think he ran for just over fifty yards. Jalen Hurts
ran for more yards than Barkley. Yes, yeah, Hurts was
over seventy yards, and he obviously, uh played well passing
the ball too. And then, like you said, the defense,
the defensive line of course, just decimated the Kansas City

(03:53):
offensive line. Then you have the rookie Cooper Dejene on
his birthday getting the pick six the cornerback for Philadelphia.
So it's yeah, everything went right for Philly, and obviously
they completely deserved that. Remember last year they got off
to that really good start, then they absolutely fizzled out
the low stretch. Yeah, so it's good to see them,
you know, obviously maybe do it a little bit opposite

(04:14):
this year. They got off to a good start and
then just kept getting better throughout the year. Happy for
Sakuon Barkley. I think he's a guy you know that's
had struggled to win in his career with New York
despite being one of the best players in the game.
So it's pretty cool he's able to Yeah, yeah, that's
right to say healthy as well. It's cool that he's
healthy and he gets to gets to win the Super Bowl. Now,
it's obviously a good story.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Loved it, loved it, loved it, loved every second of it.
And I love the food that we had too. It
just I have to brag about the spread that we had.
So we had pizza, we had homemade RIGATONI mah, it
melted in my mouth, my friend, Yeah, it sounds good.
And we had chicken wings, and we had sound. We
kept it pretty simple, right because we didn't have like

(04:57):
five hundred people over anything like that. We just had
eight people over, right, So oh my god, oh that
it sounds amazing. Oh yeah, oh yeah that it was
so good. All right, So let's get to let's go quickly.
The last two Steelheads games, of course, huge wins ten
to three over the Erie Odters and a huge six

(05:20):
nothing win for the Steelheads over the Kingston front Knacks,
a combined score of sixteen to three. In two games,
Brandon Boughts and Are the Steelheads back?

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Yes, the Steelheads are back. I'm going to say that
right now. In those two games, I think I think
it just shows the type of capabilities that the team
has when I mean, obviously they have the offensive ability,
but I think that even more important in those numbers
is three goals over the two games and one of
the games being a shutout. I mean, we talked so
much about the team defense and how that's you know,

(05:54):
struggled at different points of this season, whether that be
in their own zone, through the neutral zone, whatever it
is that they have. I've had some struggles throughout the year.
So for that to be able to lock down the
way it did over this past weekend, you know, you're
going to get the scoring with guys like Martone and
ray Koff and mac de Andellomisa. Of course you're going
to get the scoring from those guys, but to see
it happen on the defensive side of the puck, I
think is so big for this team's success going forward.

(06:17):
Of Course, you know, you get a blowout game against Erie,
and sometimes you can get a little bit complacent in
those games, but they didn't. They kept the pedal to
the medal, the entire time, and then after you get
that big win again, sometimes there could be a little
bit of compleatency going into the next game. You know,
we just won big, We're going to do the same
thing here today. But it wasn't like that at all,
complete full sixty minute effort the next time out against

(06:38):
a really good team in Kingston and a team that
you know is in the standings around the steel Heads
and could possibly be playing in the playoffs, could possibly
even be jockeying for a position for the playoffs, you know,
if the steel Leeds really go on to run here.
So that's I think the Kingston game was really telling
for me. You did it against Erie the Western Conference,
but you did it again the next day as well,

(06:59):
so that's obviously huge and also big the Jack Ivan covid,
you know, he seems to start a be getting on
a roll here with this with the second shutout of
the season against against Kingston.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
How about a couple of milestones in that weekend, Raycoff
tying a single season UH season single season game record
with six points in one game, about Finn harding the
same five with uh most single most game most. Let
me go through that again. You know, maybe the Super
Bowls in my head a little bit. Still, five points

(07:31):
in one game set another season record for as a
steel Has defenseman. Now we're talking about steel has defenseman
like Ethan del Nostro. We're talking guys, hey, Nick hay
for Thomas Harley, Thomas Harley, these are guys that the
Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick past. Unbelievable. Congratulations to Finn and
of course to Carson Raycoff as well. A lot of

(07:53):
milestones Brendan and this weekend Connor Smith two hundred career games,
yakup Fiberger one hundred games. The milestone just keep getting
more and more and you gotta like that. But yeah,
total team effort from the team in two games. James
Richmond didn't like the way those three goals were scored,
and I think it was addressed because it was unbelievable

(08:16):
the way they played against Kingston. Total great team effort.
As you said, the defense was really really good in
that game. I thought Stevie Lascabar maybe played the best
game of this the season as far as they're concerned
ever since he's come back. SOA was good. Everybody was
good in that game. So how about Ker mckowski getting
a goal and assists in that game as well. Birthday boy,

(08:37):
well his birthday was on Friday, so hey he gets
some birthday president on Saturday, goal and assist and he's
named one of the stars, right, So good to see
you here and get on get on the board as well.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Yeah, lots of lots of miles. Was like you said,
that was also Carson Raykov's tenth career hat trick, which
is absurd. Like when I saw that stat, I was like,
my goodness, that is that's crazy that he's had ten
and it is always your career. I mean that obviously
just shows the type of offensive player that he is.
And also you talk about all the milestones and obviously

(09:06):
that all that stuff's great. I think another big thing
and kind of fits into what you were talking about
there with Wokowski, is the depth scoring starting to, you know,
come out a little bit. Mason Zebski gets on the board,
Gabe Sharrott scores on Friday, starting to get those names
down the line up a little bit that are contributing.
Of course, Adams is like he didn't play this weekend,
but he's another guy who's going to slot right back
into that depth scoring and he's had a good year.

(09:29):
So uh, definitely lots of lots of things to like
from this from this weekend, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Well, hopefully Lucas Karmiris is okay too, right, I mean,
here's a guy that scored as well, and he was playing,
he was just starting to find his stride again coming
back from injury and any suspension and whatnot, and then
he goes down again and I don't always it was
looked like a lower body injury. So hopefully he's going
to be okay soon. But yeah, so but if not,

(09:55):
the depth scoring was really really good and you have
to like that for the Steelers and Jack give Covid
getting on a role played really really well positionally in
both games on Friday and Saturday. Maybe the first goal
he might have wanted to have back against the Earie
on Friday, but then after that he really knuckled down.
And it's funny, you know, you see Jack in the
holloway and stuff like that. You know, I try to

(10:15):
stay away from the goaltenders, right of course, and you
see him, you see he saw how focused Jack was throwing,
the throwing the whatever he does. His pregame stuff or
his music on doing the stretches and yeah, that's right.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
We always really cool he does.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Yeah, he does, right, So.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
We always walked past him when he's doing he's stretching,
and it's like, don't.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Even look at him. Yeah, I said to him after
the game. I said to him after the game, I said,
because when he was the first star and when I
interviewed him and I said, buddy, I go, I'm still
not touching you. I'm not going to touch you. And
he started laughing, right, because they have never touched a
goaltender when they're doing well.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
Right.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
Yeah, And remember what James Richmond told us before the game.
He said Jack was back in there because he won
against Erie, and he said if he wins again, he's
going to be back in the net for the next one.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
So simple as that.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
Yeah, exactly, So we're going to proli likely see him Againtubury.
I would think within the three games, you'll see gillsbian
one of the three, maybe that North Bay game on Thursday.
We'll have to see how that works. But again, I
mean Gillespie is also you know, he's played pretty well
when he's been counted on too. So if you can
get the yeah, get that kind of tand of going.
And what is it now, nineteen games left in the season.

(11:20):
I think that's yeah, that's right, less than twenty games left,
so it is it's a ton of games, a lot,
a lot of points to be had there. So it's
definitely big to have both of those guys on their
game at this point.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Yeah. So great, great showing, and we have a great
guest coming on today and we are going to talk
to him when we come back right here on truck
Talk on SAGA ninety sixty am, or if you're watching

welcome our guest. He is from Peterborough. He is the
captain of your Brampton Steelheads.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
There he is, how's he going?

Speaker 3 (12:52):
How are you doing?

Speaker 4 (12:53):
Ill?

Speaker 2 (12:56):
You look early over there? He got the hat on everything.
Every thing must be good and and steal Head's land.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Oh yeah, I think yeah, things are great right now.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Order, I have no idea where you are, but you're
you've got a permise to follow on your face right
now for the people that are watching on YouTube, you're frozen.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
Can you see me now?

Speaker 2 (13:19):
Yes, sir? Perfect. First order, let's talk about the fat
past two games. I want to ask you first, is
this team back?

Speaker 5 (13:30):
Yeah? I mean I don't think we're ever gone, and
we weren't really out of anything. I think maybe we
had a little they have to trade deadline. You know,
every champion goverirsity. I think we've had lots of versity,
and I think that's which brings close together. So we
knew we we talked to each other, we said everything

(13:51):
we just said, and just we need to let our
action speak more than our words. And you know, I
think that's what we did this past weekend, and you know,
hopefully we can continue that on through uh through the
season here.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
And you kind of talked about that after the trade deadline,
But but what was the difference this past weekend? You know,
is there anything that you can kind of point to
that felt different? In those two games that that obviously
created those those two big wins.

Speaker 5 (14:12):
I think just our details maybe you know, we really
harped on that through practice and in our video and everything.
You know, we wanted to play better defensively to to
create offense. And I think we won both games, putting
up ten goals the first game and then getting a
shut out and winning six to months in the second game.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
I think we focused on that compete.

Speaker 5 (14:30):
Level, and I think everyone kind of bought in, whether
it's the first line, the fourth line, or you know,
the third pairer right to our goaltending. I think everyone
kind of we all have one goal, and you know,
we kind of figured if we got to if we
want to win hot games, you gonna need to do
it together.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
So last year, you know what quite unbelievable. What you've
been doing this year, seventy six points so far this year.
You had seventy one all of last year through sixty
games played. This year forty points excuse me, and forty
games played seventy six points. What has been going well
for you lately and what did you work on in

(15:05):
the off season.

Speaker 5 (15:06):
Yeah, you know, I think coming this year, I definitely
want to take a bigger role on I kind of
want to like lead this team on the ice enough day.
I think a lot of my credit goes to this team.
And you know, it doesn't happen with the people in
the room of the people you play with. You know,
you play with good hockey players and you know you're
getting passes and you know they're buried on past that

(15:28):
you get done.

Speaker 4 (15:28):
But yeah, I think a lot of it goes to
your team.

Speaker 5 (15:31):
But also I just wanted to work on kind of
everything in the off season, you know, just from my
you know, just getting overall bigger and I feel like
I've had more dominant this year and I think I
still got a bit more show here in this in
this later half and going into the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
You mentioned there about leading off the ice. Now, of
course you kind of have almost a full season on
your belt. We were just saying, nineteen games left to
go this year. How has the you know, experience been
as the captain and you know, how have you kind
of been able to lead the team a little more
off the ice this season? Of course with that leadership role.

Speaker 5 (16:02):
Yeah, I think, uh, you know, coming this year and
when I got named captain, I i didn't really want
to change too much. I just wanted to keep my
personality and I think that's what where I am just
kind of how I am in the room, and you
know how I kind of conduct myself. But yeah, you
know we like I think it's it's gone good. Like
I got a good leadership, I got good people in

(16:22):
the room, I got a good leadership cast. I've got
a good group here and I think we really take
it by by stride.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
But you know, we have had some rough times, you know.

Speaker 5 (16:30):
I had, Yeah, I had, We've had had a couple
of talks because you know, like we were like exceeding
our expectations. So you know, there's been times where everyone's
kind of to step up in this room. And I
think we have a very solid group which kind of
everyone understands and you.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
Know, ever really in this room.

Speaker 5 (16:46):
So it's been pretty easy for me. You know, I
just try to be the same person I am and
just try to make every day around me better. And
you know, I think I had the people beside me
in that room to to help me along the way.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
If you could tell all the little ones out there,
what does it take to be a captain?

Speaker 5 (17:04):
Yeah, I think it takes you know, hard work, and
you need to lead by example. I think it takes
just you gotta be able to talk. You gotta know
when to step up and say the right thing.

Speaker 4 (17:15):
And then.

Speaker 5 (17:17):
I feel like you just got to be yourself. I
think that's the biggest thing. You gotta be yourself. You
gotta you just gotta.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Show what you what you know.

Speaker 5 (17:26):
And I think you really got to believe in what
you believe. And I think if you do that and
leaders are leaders and people follow.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
Follow you the right if you're the right leader.

Speaker 3 (17:36):
I want to take things off the ice now. Of course,
the Super Bowl just passed. Did you watch the game?
And who were you? Who are you rooting for? Was
the was the outcome good in your eyes?

Speaker 4 (17:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (17:47):
I was rooting for the Eagles, so they came to
visit win.

Speaker 4 (17:50):
But yeah, I watched with the guys on the team,
and yeah, it was. It was a fun night. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
Yeah, that was the best float I've ever seen in
my life. I'll tell you that awesome we had. I
was telling I was telling Brendan.

Speaker 4 (18:02):
We had people. It is pretty curiousy.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
And I don't know what kind of spread you guys had,
but we had this homemade BRIGATONI oh, my god, and
melted in my mouth, my friend, I'll tell you that
right now. But Agwaye, Yeah, we talked about you, you know,
with the Connibadard thing, you know, getting setting setting the
record with twenty two points, passing him right in the
U eighteen Worlds. So I was asking you even know
you've been to captain and all that kind of stuff

(18:24):
of everything pretty much, So how big is your how
many medals do you have? And how big is your
trophy case in your basement? It must be big?

Speaker 4 (18:33):
No, yeah, you know I've had. I've had.

Speaker 5 (18:35):
I've had the opportunity to win, I think lost since
I was a little kid.

Speaker 4 (18:39):
You know, I have us.

Speaker 5 (18:41):
I have actually hockey six hanging in my room at home,
and I have like medals hanging onto each one of them.
I don't know how many have, but my dad made
them for me. So it's pretty cool to see those accomplishments,
you know, when little hawk shorts and your kid and
kind of getting the more serious to mental whether it's
world championship, championships and stuff. So yeah, it's always fun,
very cool and.

Speaker 3 (19:00):
One of the kind of things you did this year
of course was playing in the Top Prospects game, the
first one that had ever happened against the US National
Development Program. You got to be the captain. So what
was that experience like and just maybe talk a little
bit about sort of the rivalry between those two, those
two entities, you know, the HL playing against the Development Program.

Speaker 5 (19:18):
Yeah, you know, it would cool to be able to
share that with different top prospects in the THCHL. You know,
it's always cool when you get to come together with
other top prospects and play against the best from the US,
and you know there's always a rivalry between Canada and USA.
But yeah, I think it was It was pretty cool.
You know, we've got a wayway with a two nothing

(19:39):
series wins, so that was also cool.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
You gotta gotta take a win out of it.

Speaker 5 (19:42):
And you know it's fun to meet new people and
see what you play with another tournament. So it was
an overall and amazing experience.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
So I did a little I did a little digging
and whatnot. And it's pretty cool what your family does
on Boxing Day. You guys have a hockey party in
the pond in the backyard and then you guys bring
it in to watch the game when when the Canada starts.
So we'll talk about that. How long have you guys
have been doing that for down at Peterborough.

Speaker 5 (20:08):
Yeah, you know, my family's done that for as long
as I remember. You have a nice pond out there,
you can have a big crew over there to play
some pond hockey. Then you should go watch the World
Junior Game. And this is the first year we didn't
have because my whole family is in Ottawa.

Speaker 4 (20:19):
So you know, it's pretty cool. I kind of look
at my childhood dream.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
And and your World Junior teammate and Carson Rakoff. Obviously
you guys have great chemistry. Uh, talk about that relationship.
I mean how that's built so quickly. Obviously he gets
traded over here in the off season and it seems
like you guys have been playing together your entire lives.

Speaker 5 (20:39):
Yeah, you know, it's been good. I actually do him
from a couple of summers. You know, he trained together,
kind of skateed in the summer. So when he got traded,
you know, I kind of figured he might be playing
together this season. When it did happen, you know, kind
of fed off each other very good. I mean know, chemistry,
you're pass into each other, and you know, just I
think we'll really help trying to contribute to this team.

Speaker 4 (21:01):
And I think we just want to win games for
our team.

Speaker 5 (21:03):
And I think, uh, we just got to continue to
keep playing the right way and hopefully everything turns out good.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Yeah, I'm congratulate you too on you know, your hundredth
career assist pretty cool as well. There's another thing for
you and how special would it be to win a
championship with a guy that you got traded with in
Angus Mac? And now how special would that be because
you guys are brought here together to win a championship
and you guys just known each other a long time.
How special would that be?

Speaker 4 (21:29):
Yeah, it would be. It would be amazing. You know,
he's my best friend.

Speaker 5 (21:33):
This is my first year back and starting, uh the
game here is very now, so you know, we're pretty close,
and I think it would be it'd be amazing, just
not for us to win a championship for this whole team,
you know, with this core group for so big, very serious.

(21:53):
You know, I think we have a goal and we
said that and you know, like I said before, we
got a lot our actions to work now.

Speaker 3 (22:01):
And got to ask you about the game coming up
tomorrow against At the time of recording this tomorrow against
the sud Wolves. It seems like every time you guys play,
you know, there's always it seems like a playoff atmosphere
on the ice. So what are you kind of looking
forward to in that game to coming up tomorrow?

Speaker 5 (22:17):
We go when you know, they're a point ahead of
us in the Eastern Conference, and if we want kind
to make a little push and kind of try to
make our way up the ranks in the Eastern Conference,
we gotta win win this one. And I think we
got got got on the right track this past weekend,
and I think we're gonna come prepared in Sudbury and
then North Bay the following day.

Speaker 2 (22:34):
Yeah, the sense of urgency with you guys was unbelievable
those last two games, that's for sure. And practice leading
up to it, how is practice been. I know we
haven't had a lot of practices, but how's practice? How
has practice been leading up to these uh to this
game tomorrow?

Speaker 5 (22:50):
Yeah, it's been. Uh, it's been really good. You know,
we're having fun. Us supposed to be fun and you know.

Speaker 4 (22:56):
We're all, uh, we're all having fun. With there.

Speaker 5 (22:58):
You know, we're working hard, we're battling, we're competed, we're
making it hard on each other, but there's also time
for a couple of laughs and you know, some fun games.
So yeah, we've just been sticking to what we have
been doing the whole year, and I think we're gonna
come out ready to go.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
And I wanted to ask you about the power play
because it seems like it's it's really been clicking recently.
And obviously, you guys, you know, had a lot of
injuries and then a lot of players away at the
World Junior so sometimes it would be tough, you know
to get chemistry with all those guys being out of
the lineup. But how have you felt that you guys
have been, you know, on the man advantage here recently.

Speaker 4 (23:27):
Yeah, I think it's been getting better.

Speaker 5 (23:29):
We're still a lot of room for improvement, I think,
uh and uh, I know we we know we expect
more out of ourselves on that power play and we
want to score every time we get on the ice,
So you know, I think it is coming together more.
We've been practicing and crack, we're a bit more, but
you know, I think still got a bit more of
improvement to come here in the same half. And that's

(23:50):
what the regular season four kind of worked on things.
And when I guess the playoff time hopefully's at one
hundred percent and that we're ready to go, Oh.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
Big would it be to beat this Sudbury Wolves? You
guys got that in your mind from last year the
playoff exit?

Speaker 4 (24:00):
Of course, yeah, I think maybe yeah, Uh, I was
rude to talk about.

Speaker 5 (24:10):
You know, we kind of we were to take our
experiences from last year, but last year's last year, and
then this year's the new year, and you know, we
kind of came in. We set some different goals this
year than we did last year, and you know, we're
ready to go over. It's gonna approach it as any
other game, right.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
And you know, we've been asking guys about this kind
of a all the time, but just want to see it.
Obviously it's different for every player. But do you have
sort of any superstitions or or maybe not superstitions, but
just routines that you had kind of go through before
every game that that gets you ready to go.

Speaker 4 (24:44):
I wouldn't say really anything too superstitious. You know, I
like to do the same thing.

Speaker 5 (24:48):
I kind of focused on the process going into the game,
and yeah, I like to be more of a kind
of loose guy before games and how high, how kind
of spy and just trying to get the whole team gone.

Speaker 4 (25:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (25:02):
Wow, just big games coming up, huge games coming up. Sudbury,
North Bay, Oshawa, I mean Oshawa. Of course they're up
in the standings whatnot. But I like that. But one
thing I wanted to say was, you know, your family
has been unbelievable supportive towards you. Your grandfather, your parents,
Your grandfather travels with you everywhere. I mean, he's your
family's probably one of the nicest people I've ever met.

(25:23):
And you and your grandfather, my goodness, see he's a
jet right. I mean how much have they helped you
through this journey?

Speaker 5 (25:31):
Yeah, you know, they've been probably number one fans, so yeah,
I mean, like them in my both my parents. You know,
they've been my number one supporters and number one fans,
so you know what, they're there for me. They do
everything for me, and you know, it's it's nice to
see them come to games and have all the support.
And yeah, you know, I'm very close with my grandparents,

(25:53):
my parents, my sister and my whole family, so it's
very nice to see their support.

Speaker 2 (25:57):
It's amazing.

Speaker 3 (25:58):
And last one for me, of course, it's your uh
it's your NHL draft year this year.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
You know, you see the projections. We all see the projections.
Have you really been thinking about that during the year.
Is it something you try to put in the back
of your mind, like, what's that whole process kind of
been like it and maybe help some of the guys
in your teams that on your team that have gone
through the process helped you out with it.

Speaker 5 (26:19):
Yeah, I mean when you're kind of putt in the
in the spotlight, you know, definitely, sometimes the ranking and
everything's in the back of your mind. But you know,
I just try to come into the rink every day
and focus on the process and focus on getting better
and that's all I could really control. And you know,
I want to I want to win here, and then
when it does come time to the drafts, you know,
I'm just gonna I'm gonna be happy that ever whatever

(26:41):
team takes me and kind of believes in my game. So,
you know, it's been it's been an amazing year. Just
going through your draft here, it's always kind of pretty cool.
To be putting on that spotlight. But yeah, it's been
a it's been a pretty cool year. And you know,
I still probably the most important time here coming up
in your draft season is the end of the season
in playoff time. So yeah, I'm just gonna go out
there and try to give my best every night and

(27:02):
just trying to get better every single day.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
All right, Porter Uh, I want to thank you so
much for joining us here, of course, you know, taking
the time to join us here with trout talk, and
we will see you soon at the rink, of course,
and I'll see you tomorrow in Brampton and looking forward
to this road trip and whatnot. So thanks for joining
me and keep up the keep up the hard work.
And you're a great captain of this team.

Speaker 3 (27:26):
Thanks Porter, Yes, thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
Good one. All right, everybody, that was Porter Marton, captain
of the Branton Steele Legs and captain of every team
it seems like every team, candidate team that he's been on. Brendan, Uh,
shall we take a break. Let's do it all right,
Let's take a break and we'll break down the interview.
This is true Talk right here in Saga nine.

Speaker 1 (27:47):
Sixty stream US Live at SAGA nine sixty am dot
c A.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
Welcome back to Trump Talk right here at SAGA n
sixty AM. Mikey K, Mike carefuleave us along with Brenda Lange,
and we are both broadcasters of the Brampton steele As.
This is the official broadcast of our podcast of the
Brampton Steelers, And we just talked to Captain portamartone and uh,
you know, different mindset as he says, and uh, you know,
he's just I like what I like how he said,

(28:46):
you know, hey, every team's gonna go through these kind
of slumps and whatnot. And we had our slump, now
we're now we're jumping. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (28:54):
I mean that's that's exactly kind of what you want
to hear from from the captain and a leader on
your team, right, just kind of you know, there's gonna
be highs and lows to every season. He just kind
of got a roll with the punches and the Steelheads
have at least in the last two games, you know,
come back and really fought out of that. So I
think that you can hear the demeanor and his voice

(29:14):
and what he's saying, just trying to stay even keel
and getting back going now with again with less than
twenty games to go, so you can tell that there's
a lot of leadership, and obviously his voice is huge
in the room, and like he said, you know, we've
had to have some meetings, we've had some conversations because
we weren't performing up to up to the expectations. So obviously,
again he's a big time leader, a great leader, and

(29:37):
as you said, he's had a lot of opportunities to lead,
being captains of pretty much every team that he's on.
So yeah, it's obviously again a great player and somebody
that is obviously a great leader as well.

Speaker 2 (29:50):
At nine points in the last two games as well,
for Porter Martina, unbelievable. I think he's just starting to
get his stride right after the roaders. Let's not forget
ladies and gentlemen, Brandon, let's not forget how many injuries,
how many aps. Again, I know we talked about it
all the time, but now this team is starting to
get comfortable with each other, and I think this might

(30:11):
be at the right time. But we're gonna see, well,
in my mind, we'll see how this road trip goes.
But I anticipated to go well.

Speaker 3 (30:20):
Yeah, I agree, I think it will go well, and
like you said, it does take a while to get
everybody kind of up to speed and get the chemistry
going again. When like you said, I mean, they missed
guys for such a huge chunk of the season. I
remember when the five players went to the World Juniors.
I think there was thirteen guys regularly plays out of
the lineup at one time. I mean, it's just it's

(30:40):
really unheard of to be able for them to be
able to stay at or above five hundred in that time.
And now getting everybody back healthy and getting the chemistry going,
I mean, obviously it's something that again takes a little
bit of time, but like you said, it seems like
it's starting to really fall into place right now, and
I would expect that to be the be the same

(31:00):
way moving forward.

Speaker 2 (31:02):
All Right, So you know what, Brendan, let's go through
the ohl standings quickly here, and actually let's let's elaborate
more on this and how many games the Steelheads have
against Eastern Conference opponents. So these are big ones coming up,
I'll tell you that right now. So if you look
at this at the regular season standings right now, so

(31:23):
you got the Steelheads sitting one point behind the Sudbury
Wolves in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. And then
you have I mean, oh, I got to pull this
up here. Sorry about this, ladies and gentlemen. So here
we go. Okay, why is it showing me? That's what

(31:44):
is going on here? Brennan, Yeah, computer problem here.

Speaker 3 (31:47):
No worries. Well, we could take I got the standings.
I got the standings pulled up right here, right yeah, So.

Speaker 2 (31:56):
Okay, there you go.

Speaker 4 (31:57):
Okay, No, why are you doing this?

Speaker 2 (32:00):
Why are you doing this to me? Hold on, I try. Okay,
here we go. All right. Okay, So got the steel
and sitting in seventh place, as I said, one point
behind the Sudbury Bolls, eight points behind the nager Ice
Dogs with the game in hand. Okay, now, okay, okay,
the Kings is Bronas sitting to sixty seven points in
fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Osha was sixty seven.

(32:23):
This I mean there's still nineteen games to go. I
mean this, it's a lot of game. So anyways, Ostro
Generals with sixty seven points, Brantford Bulldogs with sixty seven
that surprises me, and the Barry Colts are on top
with sixty nine. Now, the steel Heads have one game
in hand on the nagger Ice Dogs, got to play
them two more times, right. They have two games in

(32:45):
hand on the Kingston front Acts, got to play them
one more time. Ostro Generals. When this is over, they'll
be playing them two more times, right and they sorry,
they have yeah, two more times. And they have two
games in hand on that Brandon Bulldogs. They got to
play them one more time. And they got three games
in hand on the Brandford Bulldogs that's huge, and one
game in hand on the Barry Colts and they still

(33:06):
have to play them one more time. Back at the
CIA cent, I'm looking at teams above them in the standings.
I know they got to play North Bay a couple
more times as well, and you cannot take those North
Battalion lightly. They are a team, a hungry team, very
very hungry team, and they're fighting for that eighth spot
in the Eastern Conference right now, for that last playoff
spot with the Ottawa sixty sevens tied with the Ottawa

(33:29):
with forty points, and I anticipate them to really honestly
take that eighth spot. But yeah, Brendan, your thoughts, I mean,
what are the steal. Tell me, I'll get to it.
I'll get to it after your thoughts. But with nineteen
games left, if the Steelheads want to make a push,
maybe for a third or fourth in the Eastern Conference,

(33:49):
let's say, realistically, what do you think the record has
to be in the last nineteen games? Oh?

Speaker 3 (33:55):
Man, that's that's tough. I mean, obviously, so you're saying
third or fourth right now. I mean, if you're talking
third or fourth, you might as well say first, because
it's really not that far from third and fourth to
first place. I mean, what's the difference right now? Three points?
So like yeah, two points? So, I mean, I don't
it's really hard to say. So I'm just trying to think.

(34:17):
I mean, I think you would have to win of
the nineteen remaining to get up into that way. I
think you'd have to win at least thirteen fourteen games.

Speaker 2 (34:28):
I would say fifteen.

Speaker 3 (34:29):
Yeah, that was kind of around that number. Thirteen to
fifteen games, and you're gonna have to hope for obviously
other teams to lose as well, So you'd have to
go on quite a bit of a stretch.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
Obviously it's not impossible.

Speaker 3 (34:41):
But even if they don't get into that sort of third, fourth,
second area. They're gonna be a really tough first round
matchup for any team. Like I mean, if you look
at it right now, they're in seventh place, obviously one
point difference from Subbury. That can change the time they
get four games left against the Subury Wolves, So I
mean that can always be fluid if they play you know,

(35:01):
any team, they're Oshawa, Branford, Barry Niagara like for them,
the reward for finishing high in the conference is going
to be playing the Steelheads, who, as we expect, to
be playing some of their best hockey going forward. So
whether they get there or not, obviously is going to
be tough. Like I said, probably thirteen to fifteen wins,
you have to look at in the next nineteen and

(35:22):
hope for some losses as well and beat the teams
that are ahead of you. That's another big thing too,
that's obviously in there as well. So if you look
at that, I think that it's a possibility. But either way,
they're gonna be a tough first round matchup for any
right exactly.

Speaker 2 (35:37):
I mean I mentioned this on the broadcast before, I mean,
and the intermissions, will we talk why can you even
on the road broadcast on both podcasts. But I'm gonna
mention it one more time. Why are people already penciling
in the steel Heads already old? They're gonna be in seven,
Brandford's gonna be in second, Barry is gonna be in first, whatever,

(35:58):
Just saying right right, there are nineteen games left, nineteen, not.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
Five, not four, nineteen, and for some teams less than
that too. Like you said, the steel Its are three
games inn and against the Yeah.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
I mean and everybody, and they're starting to play together.
And it drives me crazy. And I'm gonna say this,
it's nothing against. Everybody's entitled to their own opinion, don't
get me wrong, right, but it drives me crazy. How
a lot of these people are counting out the Steelheads.
It drives me nuts. Some people out there. I'm not
going to mention any names, of course, that just drives

(36:35):
me crazy. This team is just starting to get together, folks.
They are going to be a hard out. This road
trip is going to be good. This team is coming together.
Look out. And for the so called prognosticators, let's see
what they're saying at there with nineteen games left, how

(36:55):
about you start penciling the Steelheads a little bit higher,
and I'll leave it at that.

Speaker 3 (37:00):
Again, I mean, it's it's gonna take quite a few
wins to get them up there, but it's one hundred
percent not impossible. Again, like you said, with the amount
of games left it is, it's definitely not it's definitely
not set in stone right now, so to speak. So
there's there's definitely a chance. And that's not just about
the Steel Ends. I think in general there's a lot
of chance for movement within the Eastern Conference. I mean

(37:22):
I just said, you know, the between fourth and first place,
what is its two points is the difference right now?
Like Kingston, Oshawa and Branford are tied with sixty seven,
barry as sixty nine, they're in first. So it's like,
even if you're not talking about Steel Ends, there's so
much room for movement there. The Ice Dogs are right
in there as well, and then obviously Sudbury and Brampton.
So I would not think that where it is right

(37:44):
now is where it's gonna end up at the end
of the year.

Speaker 2 (37:47):
Do you do you feel that maybe there's a chance
they pass Day Grace Dogs into that six spot. I
really do feel that there's a chance they can catch Kingston.

Speaker 4 (37:55):
I really do.

Speaker 3 (37:56):
Yeah, I mean, that's that's definitely more of a possibility.
I could see that as something that's happening. Again, you
have the Ice Dogs coming up pretty soon. Actually it'll
be when this comes out, it'll actually be tomorrow that
they will be playing the Ice Dogs, so we can
maybe talk a little bit about that game coming up here.
But yeah, I do think that that's definitely a possibility
that they could move up into that fifth spot and

(38:17):
overtake the Ice Dogs and possibly, you know, see whoever
it is that in that number four seed in the
in the Eastern Conference.

Speaker 2 (38:22):
All right, let's talk about those two games, Brendan, you
know coming up are going to be the Ice Dogs
and the Australagenos coming up and both home games gotta
be huge. And then they played the London Nights on Friday, right,
so here we go. I mean, it's go time, and
it's going to be a dog fight. As they say,
you know, Dieager Ice Dogs really talented jump team to

(38:42):
start it off. Let's start off with that.

Speaker 3 (38:44):
Yeah, we can just kind of quickly run through those games. So,
like you said, tomorrow it'll be the Ice Dogs and
the steel Legs in Brampton two o'clock start for Family Day.
This season, though like Niagara has played the steel Eds up.
The Steelers are one and three against the Ice Dogs
this year. This will be the fifth matchup between the
two teams games. Like you said, a really talented young team,
have got a really good goalie and Owen Flores he's

(39:06):
been a huge piece to their success, the overager. So
it's always going to be tough. Kevin, he likes to
perform against the Steelheads as well. We always say that
about guys who come to play against Brampton. I mean,
he's a great player and it seems like even elevates
more when he sees the Steelheads. So it'll be a
tough game. But I mean, I think it's it's it's
coming at the right time to get these games under

(39:27):
the Steelheads belt, right because these are gonna be effectively
playoff games, Like we said before, when you're playing the
teams ahead of you in the standings, those are the
ones you have to win. So it should be should
be a good bout between those two teams. And then
you said the Kashwan London coming up after that.

Speaker 2 (39:42):
Yeah, huge and I think those are measuring stick games
right there. For playing Oshawa twice pretty much a week, Right,
you're going to be playing them on Saturday. Then they
ended to be playing them on Wednesday. I believe your
areer Wednesday night game at THECA Center. Yeah, so yeah,
and then you know, I think those are huge measuring
stick games. And I really think if the steel Legs
play their game and Ash was talented too, boy boy,

(40:05):
I'll tell you these games coming up are gonna be
really nice to watch. To watch all these uh prospects
and whatnot going against each other, and uh yeah, they're
gonna be nice games to watch. If you're a big
if you're an OHL fan, I would tune into all
these games coming up.

Speaker 4 (40:21):
So lots of.

Speaker 3 (40:24):
It will be uh will be some good bouts here,
like you said, this upcoming week.

Speaker 2 (40:28):
All right, so I guess we'll get to some life tips.
I got some, oh, boy boy, but there's been some
well I'll get to you first. Let's get some life tips.

Speaker 3 (40:39):
Well, I don't know, this is this is your segment, Mike.
We need to here from the man with the wisdom.

Speaker 2 (40:47):
All right, Okay, as you know, we've gotten a lot
of snow. So one was it on Saturday when we
left the arena. My goodness, it was bad. It was
pretty bad. So we got a lot of snow the
next day. You know, you gotta shovel whatnot, and a
lot of shoveling, and and uh, there's there's a gentleman
across the street that lives across the street from me.
I'm not gonna mention his name or anything like that. Never,

(41:10):
I'm telling you, man, this guy has never shoveled, and
he's a good shape. Telling me wrong, he's a good shape.
This guy, he's a young dude, right, and he's never
shoveled his whole life ever since he's been living there.
Very bizarre. The sidewalks are brutal. So you know what
I did. I went across the street when I sent

(41:30):
a message kind of and I shoveled his whole sidewalk.
I did, Let's see if he let's see if he
follows suit, because nobody I've ever shoveled his sidewalk and
he never shovels his driveway.

Speaker 3 (41:43):
I was gonna say, I was gonna say, so you
gave him, like the subtle message of shoveling the sidewalk.
I was gonna say, do you ever think of, you know,
subtle message? No no, no, no, no no, not shoveling
his driveway leaving a shovel by his driveway. You ever
think of that subtle message. He walks out there and
he's like, what's this. I guess I better shovel my driveway.

Speaker 2 (42:03):
Yeah, he's gonna take it and put it in his garage.
That's what this guy does, garage. And thank you very much.
This guy he has a scrap metal business. So listen
to this. So this guy has a scrap metal business. Right,
I'm telling you, man, in the morning, at five o'clock
in the morning, I'm up by that anyway, right because
my day job and whatnot. So in the summer all

(42:26):
years ding ding ding boom boom boom burer ding ding
ding boom boom boom. I'm like he has he has
his own yard, but he uses his driveway in his
backyard as his business thing. I mean, on on, buddy, Right,
he doesn't shovel this thing. He cuts his He hardly
cuts his grass as well. Everybody around the neighborhood. You know,

(42:49):
did you get to tell everybody kind of talks he says, hey,
what's going out over there? You know it never cuts
his grass that much as well? What are you doing right?
Move get out? You know, like, come on, everybody else
takes care of their stuff. I mean that's number one
to me. I take pride in that.

Speaker 3 (43:05):
I think it's signed for a neighborhood intervention. You get
everybody together. Yeah, you start saying, hey, hey, shut driveways,
not shoveled, grass isn't cut.

Speaker 2 (43:14):
Let's go throw my shovel goes in the garage, Throw
him a lawn where he's got that too, Throw throw
my weed. Whack he throws that in his backyard. No,
but I come on at the point being, you know,
help out like I we and the two doors over
for example, there's an old couple that lives over there,
and I always go over there and I always shovel

(43:35):
their sidewalk all the time. You know what I mean,
really really nice people and whatnot. They can't do it right.
But this guy, this guy, like, come on, like do something.
I take pride in that stuff, you know what I mean.
I take pride if I can't leave the house, especially
on a summer day, for example, if my grass is
not cut, nice I feel like terrible. I think. I

(43:56):
don't know, it's just the way I am. I guess maybe,
but whatever, this guy couldn't care less grass streams anyway,
I don't understand.

Speaker 3 (44:05):
Don't you agree with me on yeah, got to take
care of the property. No, I agree with that. I
definitely agree with that, you know, and and it makes
it makes all the other houses around you look bad,
right when you got the one when you definitely haven't
taken care of it.

Speaker 2 (44:19):
I get it.

Speaker 4 (44:19):
No, I see that.

Speaker 5 (44:20):
Now.

Speaker 3 (44:20):
I don't know a home, so obviously I don't. I
can't speak firsthand with this, But yeah, my neighborhood is
pretty good. Actually, I think everybody, Yeah, that one guy
just trying to think. No, I don't think so, if
you like, everybody's pretty good with it, at least around me.
My street's pretty long, but at least around that of course. Yeah,
I think everything Yeah, okay, okay, yeah, so you'd see everyone,

(44:43):
but yeah, no, I think everything's taking care of around here.

Speaker 2 (44:48):
Well, good for you, everything everything taking care of too.
Is just that one guy. I just don't understand. I
just don't get it. But yeah, what what do you think,
brendany You know what, let's circle back to hockey for
two seconds. What do you think the Wednesday, Thursday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Saturday, the game plan has to be we'll

(45:10):
just do this quickly.

Speaker 3 (45:12):
Yeah, one hundred percent. I think the game plan one
hundred percent has to be. And we talked about this
with James Richmond, and we talked about it so much.
Limit the odd man rushes. Obviously, that is something that
has plagued them recently, so being able to again try
to limit that. And then I feel like the Steelers
are best when they're when they're for checking, when they're
pressuring in the offensive zone, and that's kind of what

(45:35):
I saw in the past two games as well, making
the other team make those quick decisions, making their defensemen
have to make the quick decisions and not allow the
clean breakouts. I think that's when the Sealds are at
their best when they're playing that fast, up the ice
style of games. So I think that's something that the
Stelds will definitely look for. And then I think I
think we're starting to see that that the Steelers are
going to be getting some really good goaltending down the

(45:55):
stretch as well, so that everything kind of falling into
place in that regard.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
I'm just gonna say the Ford checking has to be
good and they have to be physical absolutely thing. Do
physical and keep playing the way they're playing, all right,
So that's gonna do it. For episode twenty. You're a trull.
Talk right here at SAGA and I sixty am. If
