Speaker 2 (00:24):
Welcome bit trut talk right here in Sabini sixty am,
or if you're watching on YouTube, this is episode number
twenty two. I believe my name is Mike Carafelitis, along
with my partner Brendan Lang, were both broadcasters of the
Brandon Steelheads. Brendan, let's first start off with how are
you doing.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
My friend, hell I doing okay. It was a little
bit of a tough weekend for pet, but you know,
out on the other side now of a bit of
a bit of a sickness and you know what, doing
a lot better. So looking forward to looking forward to
the next couple of weeks of hockey obviously a lot
going on in that. And and also, you know what,

(01:05):
the snow's melting a little bit. I could see some
grass as I'm looking out the window, you know what,
It's starting to get to that part of winter where
like I don't I don't mind winter, I don't mind
the snow, but it gets to like a point, especially
around you know, March, near the middle of it. Where
it just kind of starts to look ugly with all
like the dirty snow all around the roads and everything
where you just kind of wanted to to go away.

(01:27):
So I think we're going in the right direction. We've
had some more days, had some rain yesterday, so moving
in the right direction.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Weather.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Well, I was feeling pretty good. How have you been, Mikey.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Good, got good. Just got back from that wow whatever
during the week, the northern road trip there, so that's
that's a doozy. I couldn't believe how much snow they
had in Sue savingy in my goodness me like we
were lucky to get up there. There was a lot
of uh there was a highway closure, all that kind
of stuff whatever, So but it was it was a

(01:57):
good road trip, of course, you know. Still it's coming
out of five about six points out of that road trip.
And there was a dad's big dad road trip up
there too, right, so it was kind of cool. You saw.
Forgive me for the fathers if I forget you. But
I just remember some of them. I remember seeing mister
Karmir Krmer, mister Carmiris, excuse me, uh, Lucas's dad, mister Marton,

(02:18):
uh mister Gyee was there. Uh yeah, uh oh, mister Zebeski,
mister Lescobar. Oh my goodness, I think I'm missing like
three or three more of them, and I forget me,
like I said. So yeah, So it was really cool
to see them up there and stuff. And they made
it up there through blizzard and apparently Porter Marton's dad
just he white knuckled it, apparently the whole drive up

(02:42):
there yet. So you know, kudos to the dads for
making the trip and stuff, and it was it was
uh uh yeah. After that road trip, and then we
had the whole game against the Austro generals of course,
and uh, you know that was kind of a game obviously,
Steel it's one want to come back. But you know,
it's all been the arena. It's been all the arena
for me. That's what that's all I've been doing, so

(03:04):
especially yeah, especially this last week. So that's about it,
my friend. That's about it. So we got lots of stuff,
I mean, lots of stuff to go over in this
episode here. I mean, we'll talk, we'll get more into
the road trip and I we'll talk about our guest
who's coming up soon and as well, you know, we'll
talk about the remaining steel Heads opponents for their coming up,

(03:26):
and we'll talk about the standings a little bit. But
before that, I guess we could talk about some milestones. Brendan,
and I'll tell you something right now. Let's talk about
Finn Harding signing his entry year deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
And you know what I love about this that he
was selected in the eighth round by the Penguins one
hundred and fifty first overall, signs an entry deal. Hard

(03:48):
work pays off for the defenseman, Fin Haardy.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
It sure does, you know. It's it's always cool to
see somebody get that get that opportunity to be drafted
and ultimately sign the contract. Like we saw that, but
like you said, to have been you know, not a
high draft pick, somebody that was drafted a little bit
later in the draft and to get signed within not
even a year of being drafted, you know, obviously, it's
a it's a massive accomplishment and it's not something that happens,

(04:12):
you know, all the time either, like usually when you
get those later picks, like it's maybe takes a little
while or maybe they don't sign at all. So it's
it's obviously a huge credit to to fin himself and
the hard work that he's put in. I mean, just
think about the development of when he started two years ago.
Like remember when we showed up to the rink and
we saw Barker, von Richter and Finn Harding in the
lineup and we were like, yo, who are these Yeah,

(04:33):
these young guys and you.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Know guys right, and it's pretty cool for Finn too,
Like you gotta you got to think about this. He
was selected as steel as in the twenty twenty one
a witch All draft and what I love about this
he was in the eighth in the eighth round, one
hundred and fifty first overall too and the priority like
that's and you know, guy's an underdog, you know.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah, And he didn't he didn't play as a sixteen
year old old. He started as a seventeen year old
like but later he wasn't somebody that made the team
his first year at a camp like this has been
a lot, a lot of work that has gone into
to where he's gotten. And and we know just from
being around the rank and seeing all the scouts, seeing
Dubus at some of the games, Pittsburgh really likes him,
really likes it, and so you know there's I think

(05:17):
there's a very very good chance that we see him
in the NHL and not too distant of the time.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
And don't forget about you know, over the over the weekend,
he set the single season record for defenseman UH for
assists forty eight assists. That's a record for Steels defenseman
UH as we're Steel's defenseman and assists, so that's unbelievable.
Congratulations defend And what a great family he comes from too,

(05:44):
and you can tell with the what he you know,
with his mother and his father, his brother. Being able
to play with his brother this year another thing, like
so many things going on for Finn this year, he
gets the contract, plays with his brother back on defense. Uh.
Comes from a good family. Just to say, uh, congratulations,
Yeah he was.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Congratulations And like you said, with all that going on,
you know, playing with his brother, getting drafted to the
NHL signing, the personality hasn't changed one bit, you know,
it's still the still the same guy whenever we get
to talk to him around the rink. So it's always
a pleasure to se him. We saw him yesterday before
the game and congratulated him a little bit about the
the contract. Yeah, it's a it's definitely an awesome mile
so and you love seeing it when guys get that opportunity,

(06:26):
and especially somebody like him that's obviously puts so much
hard work into that spot. It's it's great to see.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Yeah, he's gotten. He just gets better and better and
better every game. He's so good with the body. He's
very very good with his positional uh, his positional game
back on defense. He plays a really really smart game.
And he's a really really smart kid. Right, And I'll
tell you something, if there wasn't uh, if there wasn't
a job for obviously he's moving on in hockey, But

(06:53):
if he wasn't a hockey player, he'd probably be a doctor.
I'm just saying that, Right, doctor, what kind of doctor
do you think Finn would be?

Speaker 3 (07:05):
He'd be a he'd be a very positive doctor. I think.
I think that's the first thing that comes to mind.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
I think he'd be a really positive doctor. But he'd
be a good like fam like a really good with
the with the kids. I think he'd be a real
good pediatrician, you know what I mean, Like the kids
come in, he'd be able to calm him down. And
all they got to do is looking to smile, and
then he just starts smiling or something because he's got it.
He's got a really real uh uh. He's got a
smile that's addictive, Like you know, he smiles, you smile,

(07:34):
you know what I mean. So I like that he
said he could be a pediatrician. He could be uh,
I don't know. He could be a family doctor. I
was about to be my family There's a lot Yeah, yeah,
me too. I'm just laughing. But either guy, I think
he'd be a doctor or he'd be a good uh

(07:55):
I can say. I'm only like a store or something
like a big store, like it's like a salesman.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah, yeah, you know what. I think he could do
a lot of things. I don't think he's gonna have
to worry about that though. I think hockey's gonna work out.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
So he's looking at the big Yeah he's made. That's
a big that's a big bucks. But congratulations to Finn
of course. So yeah, so we'll get to we'll get
to talking about the recent road triple course in the
recent game against the Oustwa Generals, we'll talk about as well. Brendan.
The games that are gonna be coming up for the
Steelheads right now. There's only eight games left in the

(08:27):
regular season, so wow, it's gonna be unbelievable. All rights,
gonna be a Greig finish borright, So more truck Talk
to come after the break. This is truck Talk right here.
It's SAGA sixty.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Am, no Radio, No Problem stream is live on SAGA
nine sixty am dot c A.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
Welcome back to trout Trap right here at Savonine sixty am.
But it was Mike Carefelinis along with Michael Padre Friend
and Languabo, broadcasters for the Brampton Steelheads. And I think
we're going to our guests. Are We're going to our guests? Okay,
all right, we're going to our guests. All right. Here
he is, he's six to one, and I think he's
one hundred and eighty five pounds or ninety five pounds. No,
it's skinny. That's too skinny for that. All right. It's

(09:37):
Parker von Repted, defenseman of the Brampton Steelheads. Parker, thanks
so much for joining us here in trout Talk, my friend.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Guys, No problem looks like you're just getting out of
practice there, so uh yeah, you look like you're pretty
relaxing with your half backwards.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:55):
Practice yeah, yeah, practice just ended just on the way
home now, So that's good.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
That's good. All right. I guess I guess I'll start
it off here. You know what, Parker, you were pretty
much drafted by your hometown team in twenty twenty two
the HL Party selection and you were drafted in the
third round, fifty first in the third round. Talk about
that experience to be drafted to your hometown team.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
I mean, it was kind of a full circle moment
because I used to bill it back about ten years
ago for the team. So getting drafted by the team
that you know, I was always around growing up was
really a really nice feeling.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
And to get to put on that jersey and play
for him was even better.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Do you think that that that helped you anyway, you know,
just kind of being around guys that had been through
that experience as a kid.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
Yeah, Because as a kid, I wasn't really for sure
that I was going to do hockey fully, and then
once I saw what it was like, I kind of
made this step to do that fully.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
Kay, you know what, you come back to me obviously,
you come back bigger, you come back stronger. You were
in Boston Bruins camp rookie camp this year. You actually
took part in the prospect game as well. Talk about
that whole experience, how that's made you better.

Speaker 5 (11:05):
Yeah, I mean, seeing what it's like at the pro
level and how much of like a little, you know,
a step it is. It really makes you want to
improve your own game and it forces you to take
that step to get better as a player. And taking
that back, I know we had a lot of other
guys that also went to NHL camps, but taking that
back to our team they had this year really helped,

(11:25):
and I feel like we all benefited from that experience
and brought it together as a team.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
I mean, so what can you say about just kind
of like you kind of mentioned they're all the guys
having or not all, but you know a lot of
guys having experience going to NHL camp. Like, what are
maybe some of those habits or or off the ice,
on the ice that you saw brought back from those
guys that had that experience.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
It's the little things outside like off the ice, like
being in the gym every day, before and after stretching,
rolling out and staying on top of your diet. That
makes it like that much more, you know, on top
of it, because at the pro level, they're all they're
all on top of it. And when you see that,
you start to realize that that's what you need to
be too to get to that next level. And you know,

(12:11):
all the guys that went, I saw that and we
brought it back and it's been working.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
So you guys just recently had a bowling event. I
saw a couple of days ago, and you were a
couple of pictures there, which was kind of cool. So
talk about that. You were the season ticket holders, you know,
it must have been a good time. Those get together
is always good with the team of course, those events
and who was the best bowler? Lot of you guys.

Speaker 4 (12:34):
The best bowler? I saw a couple of good guys.
A couple of guys are just terrible.

Speaker 5 (12:38):
But some of the I mean some of the best
where that I saw where Van Volsen and Gillespie, they
knew how to bowl.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
He looks like a kind of guy he likes like
a PBA bowler. I could see him doing that. I
could see him like spinning it I don't know why
I like being like a perfect guy.

Speaker 5 (12:55):
I don't know why I expect I expect him to
be that good. But like I only knew you to check.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
I saw I saw a video of him throwing a strike.
So which are you? Are you willing to call out
any of the guys that weren't good? You said there
was a few terrible ones McGregor.

Speaker 5 (13:14):
Richmond's not good. McGregor's not good, Stevie, he just trucks it.
I figured that right, and just like throws it the.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
Need the gutter rails up. Yeah, how was you a game?

Speaker 2 (13:30):
Parker?

Speaker 5 (13:32):
I started out well and then you know, time goes
on and you get a little tired and you're just like, oh,
got her, got her here, got her there.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
So yeah, yeah, how many games did you guys get
in with? You know, we get to mingle with the
season ticket holders as well and all that, so that's.

Speaker 4 (13:48):
You know, yeah, so cool.

Speaker 5 (13:49):
Yeah, with all like the you know, you talk to
the fans, you signed some things from like the new
cards we got. We were signed a bunch of those
and with all that and cluded its like again like
a game.

Speaker 4 (13:59):
And a half to games, So not too.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Much, but so you know, you're out there with as
we mentioned, you know, the season, taking olders, the fans,
you're you're out there with your team as well, and
it's kind of a you know, team building experience. Obviously
you guys just recently on a northern road trip as well.
You know, how much are those kind of team bonding
sort of aspects. Obviously you guys are really close together
and throughout the season, but but how much does that

(14:22):
help maybe, you know, having that experience on the road
going up north, and also having it late in the
year when you know things are kind of ramping up.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
We should have had a bully to pick up north.
That's we should have done. We didn't even think. We
didn't even think about that. But the sorry Parker, go ahead.

Speaker 4 (14:34):
Yeah we did a bowling thing like two years ago.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
I think it was soon remember that.

Speaker 5 (14:38):
Yeah, Yeah, those those long road trips, to being on
the bus together for so long and getting to spend
the nights together in the hotels.

Speaker 4 (14:45):
It brings a group closer together.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
And around this time of the year, getting closer to
the playoffs, that's all.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
We really need to do.

Speaker 5 (14:51):
We got to pull together and get ready for for
a stretch here so yeah, the trip was good. I know,
we all enjoyed it. You know, it started out well,
didn't end out the way we wanted to, but it
was a good time, all right.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
So you know what you've been ever since Connor Smith
got traded to the Steve LEDs from the Owen soamb Attack,
you've been paired up with him right from day one,
Right when he got off the plane in Ottawa, you
guys have been together. Talk about playing with Connor and
how much you guys help each other.

Speaker 4 (15:17):
I mean, he's a great player. He's a really shutdown defenseman.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
And since he's came to the team, uh, you know,
I've only ever seen him play for other teams before
that and here there right, because he was mostly in
the Western Conference last year. So you know, playing with
him was really good at the start and it still is.
And he's a really great player, and you know, we
build off each other and it's been pretty good in

(15:41):
the D zone because I mean, the guy knows how
to play deep pretty well.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
So yeah, and how much does it help too that
you know, he's a you know, an HL champion like
he's he has the experience playing in those big games.
I mean obviously it's going to help off the ice.
Been playing with him on the ice, do you kind
of notice any sort of different maybe calming factors when
you're out there.

Speaker 4 (15:58):
Yeah, he plays with a poise.

Speaker 5 (16:00):
You know, guys get when they've been in the league
like he has for a while. And you know, as
you said, win a championship and seeing what it's like
in the playoffs. I think that addition was also a
key factor for what we're trying to do this year.
And yeah, he plays with you know, knowing that he's
been around for a while and it shows.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
So Parker, talk to me about talk to me about practice.
What's been the vocal point of practice recently?

Speaker 4 (16:25):
It's just we get out there.

Speaker 5 (16:27):
It's been quick and short, but it's been snappy, right,
it's been it's been good, and you know, moving to
the playoffs, we don't want to be on the ice
too long, so keep the legs fresh. But it's been good.
The guys are moving quick, the pucks are snapping. The
d zone is looking good. So it's gonna be something
to watch on playoffs.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
And can you got to feel like sort of the
stakes kind of getting higher here as the season goes on.
I mean, it seems like the games have started to
get a little more physical, maybe a little less space
out there on the ice, Like, can you notice that
when you're out there with these games going into the postseason.

Speaker 5 (16:57):
Yeah, So a lot of the last games that we've played,
it's almost felt like a playoff game already. And even
though we're like, what is it like eight or nine
games out, still it's you know, they're starting to feel
like we're already in the playoffs. And every game's been
tighter and more physical, and like you said, there's less
space to you know, do what you want. So you know,
it's getting us ready and prepared for what's coming. And
it's been good.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Now Parker will talk to you personally now, I mean,
you didn't get drafted last year, which was a nonsense
as far as I'm concerned, I thought you should have
been drafted this year. My friend, I'm gonna tell you,
and I keep telling you this, You're gonna get drafted
the way you're playing. Is that something in the back
of your mind, you know, you keep you know, you
want to you know, you know, I'll show you kind
of thing.

Speaker 5 (17:38):
I mean, it's there, like way back, but honestly, right now,
I'm just looking to go as far as we can
in the playoffs as a group, and and that I
think everyone on our team will have their own successes.
So we just got to pull it together and push
forward as a group and we'll all get to where
we want to be.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
Good answer, Yeah, always always the team first answer. Love
to hear that. So, So, we had Mason Zebeski on
the show last and just wanted to ask you kind
of about you know, you're playing before playing in the
in the OHL, and he had teammates you know, through
minor hockey that has he's played against in the OHL.
And you have as well, guys like you know, Sam Dickinson,

(18:16):
Beckett Seneca that have gone on of course to be
high NHL draft picks, and quite a few other guys
that you played against in the OHL. So what's you know,
the experience like being on the ice against players that
you that you grew up with and then seeing the
successes that they've had, you know, past the past your
minor hockey days.

Speaker 4 (18:31):
I mean, it's cool.

Speaker 5 (18:31):
It's cool seeing them like succeeed the way they did,
you know, knowing them before it all, and I mean
playing against them, you're always like out there kind of
tapping a little shimpads saying what's up, kind of kind
of giving a little laugh. Right, So it's like friendly
when it is, and then when they puck drops, it's
all you know, you forget the guy's name.

Speaker 4 (18:48):
You just go try to take the puck off and whatnot.

Speaker 5 (18:50):
Right, But you know, it's cool kind of seeing like
everyone moved forward in hockey and to see what they
turned out.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
So yeah, So I want to talk to you about
Bob when you went to the camp the prospect and
you played in the prospect game whatnot. Who is you know?
I asked him to all the guys this you know
that'd have been in NHL camps or whatnot. So I'm
gonna ask you who was the first guy ANHL that
you looked at when you walked in him and like
whoa or the first guy went up to you and

(19:17):
said hey and said like hey, how's it going? You know,
how's it going kid? Or anything like that.

Speaker 5 (19:22):
This is a pretty So I first day in Boston,
we had to go in to do testing in the morning,
like off ice testing, and so I got my blood taking.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
I did a couple of like you know, iPad tests whatever.
And then we go in the gym.

Speaker 5 (19:35):
It's still maybe maybe seven in the morning, probably earlier,
and I see Brad Marshawan in the corner of the
gym squatting like four hundred pounds.

Speaker 4 (19:44):
Yeah, he crack of dawn. You walk in and you
see Brad Marshawn.

Speaker 3 (19:48):
Just so, did you did you get to have any
kind of interaction with him? You know, throughout the at
the time.

Speaker 5 (19:57):
Throughout the thing, I saw a couple of guys like
you see him coming in and off the ice.

Speaker 4 (20:00):
Uh, they were practicing before, you know, my group would.
But then in the gym, like you see him around
and whatnot.

Speaker 5 (20:06):
But I thought that was pretty cool seeing the captain
just sitting in the gym at six in the morning
giving it so, you know, pretty cool.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
Legs, my goodness. Yeah, gets the strongest legs on the
steel legs. I'll tell you I think this. I think
Spencer Solva does am I right, He's.

Speaker 4 (20:23):
Got some nice legs.

Speaker 5 (20:25):
Oh, let's yeah, it's it's probably all rickson.

Speaker 4 (20:32):
I'm being honest. The guys, the.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
Guys, would you say, just like the strongest all around
is probably a.

Speaker 5 (20:41):
Yeah, Like after games we do our workouts and stuff,
like the weights not set really high because we just played.

Speaker 4 (20:46):
It's just to get like a little left in and
he's tossing.

Speaker 5 (20:50):
I remember we were doing squads one time after games
and he went in there, tossed like two more plates
on each side and started lunging it. So, you know,
we're all sitting there like sick guy doing But this
is like when he first got to the team too.

Speaker 2 (21:02):
We're totally you know, he set the standard for you guys.

Speaker 5 (21:06):
Right, yeah, yeah, I was like, oh, I'm not doing
that right now, but like, damn man, that guy.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
Yeah, he is a moose, that's for sure. So then
the team's I mean, you guys just came off a
norder the road trip. Of course, you know, we talked
about that five out of six points tough loss to
the oustwead generals. Of course, you guys, I mean, you guys,
talk to me about the mindset going into this weekend
coming up. I know it's only one game coming up,
and there's gonna be another game coming up next weekend,

(21:32):
but what's the mindset coming up here? How are you
guys looking?

Speaker 5 (21:36):
Yeah, so the mindset going into the next couple of
games is you know, get our stride going going into
the playoffs, and that might not be blowing out teams
by like three four five, that's just playing our game
no matter what happens with the score, just playing our game,
knowing that we like stay strong as a group and
if we just play our game like we have in
the past, I think we're gonna be pretty successful.

Speaker 3 (22:00):
And talking about you know, the goaltending that you've been
ginning recently, Ivankovic has been been playing really well since
Gillespie's come over, He's been awesome. Like how much does
that help? You know, just just knowing that you have
that kind of rock back there in the net.

Speaker 6 (22:10):
Yeah, it's it's honestly, I love it because you know
the shots that you like would hope don't go in,
they don't go in, right, So it's just like you
know that there's someone back there that can bail you
out when you need it, and they'll save everything that
you know shouldn't be going at the same.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
Time some yeah no, sorry, park, Yeah no.

Speaker 5 (22:31):
They'll save something that shouldn't be staved and they'll save
the rest too, So it helps out.

Speaker 2 (22:36):
Yeah. Absolutely. I was just gonna say, like, you know,
what a teammate that Gillespie has been. Since ever since
he's been over to uh uh, since he got traded
over the Steelers, I've seen you know, I see it
all the time. Like he fits in perfectly right, like great,
great kid and whatnot. You know, give me your thoughts
when he first came over. Was he a little bit
shy and all that? Did you kind of calm him down, say, hey, kid,
don't worry. You know you're good. Anything like that, you know,

(22:58):
talk about that.

Speaker 5 (22:59):
Yeah, So I my stall is almost like right beside
him in the room. So we got pretty close pretty quick.
And I think he I mean, being around the league
for a couple of years, you get to like know
guys even though you don't like know them like they're
on your team, you still like know who they are,
you know where they're from and all not. And he's
from Oakville, so he like grew up with a couple
of guys like Zebaski and Misa, so it wasn't too

(23:20):
hard for him first coming in. And he also got
here with all Rixson around the same time too, so
he had a teammate around which also helped out. But yeah,
he's been a great teammate so far, and he's been
really well in that and I love the guy, so.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
Yeah, he's a big guy, he's funny.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
It seems like the new additions like all Rickson and
Smith and Gillaspia fit in pretty well, pretty easily, like
you know, quickly there for you guys though, going down
the stretch and you know, he got probably, like you said,
eight games around there remaining. Like do you think about
standings matchups at all? Like any team that you'd rather play,
is it more so about just kind of getting the game,
you know, in order for playing your best talk yet

(23:58):
at a specific time.

Speaker 4 (24:00):
I mean there's always chat about who'd rather play.

Speaker 5 (24:02):
But at the same time, I know how we play,
and I know how we can play against these teams,
and I like our shot against all of them. So honestly,
whoever it is, it's looking like Oshawa or Kingston right now,
but either one of them, I think we got a
get shot.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
I'm with you that one. Oshauwa. You know, you guys
to me, you know it's one of those games, right,
it's the morning game whatnot?

Speaker 4 (24:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (24:26):
Whatever? You know, you guys, you split the series of
the Ostwa generals easily could have won that game against
Gals as well. But yeah, or Kingston's whatever it is.
I mean, I like that what you're saying there, because
you guys match up well against any of the any
team in the East, any team in the West, right
in my opinion.

Speaker 5 (24:44):
M hmm, yeah, yeah, so I yeah, honestly, whoever it is,
it's gonna be a good series and we'll take it
to him.

Speaker 2 (24:52):
So there you go.

Speaker 3 (24:54):
Yeah, I like that, definitely, definitely looking forward to the playoffs.
I think I know it'll be. It'll be one last
last question for me. We talked a little bit just
about you playing with Connor Smith since he's come over,
but but you've had, you know, different deep pairings throughout
the season. You're playing a little bit with Spencer Sova there.
How do you kind of adapt, you know, playing with
different guys you know all the time, seeing different faces

(25:16):
out there on the ice.

Speaker 5 (25:18):
Yeah, so you know, most of these games we've played
with like I want to say, six or seventy's, it's
been in between, right, So playing with all these different guys,
I mean they're all great players, so it's not really
you know, much much of a change because you know,
you got someone like good to work off with right
and honestly, going into the playoffs, I don't know what

(25:38):
we're gonna be doing in terms of six or seven,
so we got to be ready for anything.

Speaker 2 (25:41):
So so yeah, no, no, sorry, oh yeah, no sorry.

Speaker 4 (25:47):
I'm good with playing with anyone.

Speaker 5 (25:48):
Honestly, everyone's a good player, and it's been really easy
playing with whoever's on the ice with me.

Speaker 2 (25:54):
Last thing for me, do you listen to I the Tiger?
Is that one of your pump up songs.

Speaker 4 (25:58):
I don't know if I've listened to it that much recently,
but that was the thing.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
I'm gonna say this to you. Last thing for me,
You got the Eye of the Tiger. Keep it up?
Play that song? You're in your earbuds and stuff, man,
and man, that's you. You got the Eye of the Tiger.
Are playing in the dressing room or something. So I
think what I think. We tells he takes care of
the music, tell him.

Speaker 3 (26:18):
To put on, but Gregor said he took care of
the music.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
Oh you know.

Speaker 4 (26:24):
Whoever gets there first.

Speaker 2 (26:26):
Yeah, you got the Eye of the Tiger, my friend.
Keep it up? Thanks all right, listen, I want to
thank you so much for coming on. Parker and uh
and thank you for going on a secure in a
secure place, I have to say, because the last couple
of guests that we've had, well, no, the best he
didn't the before that last couple didn't go in a
secure place. So thank you so much for coming on. Alright, guys,

(26:50):
thank you. All right, that's Parker von Richter of the
Brampton Steelheads and uh, he's got the eye of the tiger.
All right, So when we come back, we'll break down
that interview where Parker von Richter. You are listening to
True Talk right here SAGA sixty.

Speaker 7 (27:05):
A stream us live at SAGA nine sixty am dot
c A.

Speaker 2 (27:42):
We're at the trop Talk right here at Saga I
sixty A. Have might care to believe us along with
Brendon Langer, both broadcasters of the Brandon Steelheads, and we
just talked to Parker von Richter. What a bro I
mean a man. He's just figure he's gotten stronger. And
again I just have to mention, I know we talk
about it all the time, from a sixteen year old
to worry is now Brendon, my goodness, I mean from

(28:02):
a kid that were both braces and I mean everybody
grows and just but he's going on fast.

Speaker 3 (28:07):
Right, Yeah, no, he really has. I mean we were
just talking about Finn Harding, you know, seeing him show
up as a young kid who was exactly the same
with the with Parker, you know, seeing him again, he
was sixteen when he showed up too, like he said,
he had the braces on, and you just see the
development over the time, and not just not just the
development you know, on the ice, but but seeing it
off the ice, well, just talking to him, interacting with him,

(28:28):
interviewing him, you can see that there's been you know
a lot of a lot of changes throughout that you
know experience that he's had with the Steel And obviously
it's a really cool experience for him because you'd said
it or you'd asked him about it early on in
that interview about playing for his hometown team now not
his hometown team in Brampton, getting drafted by Mississauga playing
they're pretty much the same, you know, the same organization,

(28:48):
So it's it's got to be it's got to be
a really kind of cool feeling for him in that regard,
and the play is just completely taken off this season,
Like you saw the development from his first to second year,
but I think the second to third your jump has
been massive for him. I mean he's a guy that
you can rely upon now on the ice in any situation,
it doesn't matter.

Speaker 2 (29:07):
He just nailed it right there. He's played every situation
out there, penalty kill, the power play. I mean he's
been out there and every time James Richmond, he has
a complete trust in this guy to go out and
do anything he wants him to do. Go out in
the penalty kill, he'll do a great job. Go out
in the power play, he'll do a great job. This
is a guy that's been to Bruins, a elemental rookie camp,

(29:28):
going at the camp. Whatever he played in this in
this game, he comes back, he's bigger, he's stronger. He's
paired up with Connor Smith. You can see how much
they compliment each other as well. In the back end.
I mean, if there's a sheriff back there, if there's
a deputy sheriff, because I know that, you know, they
like to call it Connor Jameson likes to call Connor
Smith the sheriff. If there's a deputy sheriff, it's it's

(29:48):
Parker Ron Rickon.

Speaker 3 (29:51):
And I asked him about the kind of the steadying
presence that Connor Smith, you know, kind of has in
his play because he's been in the league for a while.
You got a remember, I mean you Harker himself, he's
not a young player anymore. Like this his third year
in the league. He has the experience now and has
been through multiple playoff series with the Steelheads and playoff

(30:11):
runs going into the playoffs, so he has the experience
as well. And you can see the pois out there
on the ice too, Like there's definitely, you know, no
rushing in his game. He just makes the right play
all the time. And I think that's what kind of
sets apart a great defenseman from a really good defenseman
is the is the quick decision making, and you can
obviously see that in the game, like you said, just
kind of controls the play when he's out there, And

(30:33):
that's obviously a huge part of his game and a
huge part of what the steel Heads are going to
need to have from him here going down the stretch
to to make the playoffs and hopefully have the deep front.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
All Right, So let's talk about that. Let's talk about
the road trip, the pass road trip. Getting it to
the little bug japped. Of course, pretty good, pretty good,
pretty pretty good. I thought maybe they could have got
those two points in Subbury. I thought, of my mind,
Subbury got a little lucky. But that's just the way
it goes. But the goal tending was absolutely phenomenal in
those three games. I mean, Jack Divankovic was phenomenal. On

(31:06):
the Thursday night in the two to one winning overtime
against the North Babe Battalion, he was the first star
in that game. Oh my goodness, making save after save
after save Port de Martone, scoring an overtime. What do
you think about that game, Brend.

Speaker 3 (31:18):
Then, Yeah, you know, it's obviously a big one for
the steel Ends because you know, the North Bay Battalion
have given them problems at times this season, right, So
it's always it's always a close matchup anytime that the
steel Ens and Battalion meet each other, and that game
was no different. I mean, we know it's it's well

(31:38):
documented about the struggles that they've had in overtime as well,
playing three on three and for them to be able
to come through with a win, especially to start the
road trip, I always think that that's a really big
one when you first get up North just have that
right exactly. You got to get that first game done,
and I feel like exactly and set the tone and

(31:58):
also get the confidence as well forgetting that first game
and try to ride that momentum throughout the throughout the weekend.
So it was it was a big win for them.
And now they're going to play North Bay again. By
the time this comes out, it'll be if it'll have played.
But they got him again last time this year. Seems
like they played them so much recently.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
Yeah, everything, Yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (32:18):
Know, I know, but it'll be it'll be over against them.
But I think that just kind of set themselves up
to be in a good spot for the rest of
that northern road trip.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
And you don't even to look at the second game
against the Sue Greyhounds again. You know again, Bradon Gillespie
gets the starting goal for the Steelheads and what does
he do. He stops thirty five or thirty eight shots,
gets the first start. Two Steelhegs goalies got first start
of the game and he was absolutely again phenomenal in
that game. Lucas Karmiris was really good in that game.
Parker von Richter scored the opening goal in that game

(32:49):
for the Steelheads. But they they look good. But I
tell you the Sue Greyhounds they're real real, They're going
to be really good in a couple of years. I
think that's in my mind. They got to They're very
fast and the very well coach of course by John Deane.
And we gotta go back to North Bay as well,
very well coached by Ryan Ullahan. Uh too well coached teams.
But coming out with that sixth Street win, that was
huge for the second game of the road trip. And

(33:11):
uh uh, Lucas Krmeris was third start in that game.
Actually one goal, one assaystem he was a plus three,
which is huge. So I liked. I liked what I saw,
But uh uh, that was that was a good game
for the second game of road trip. And you're coming
in and you think about it, it's you're coming into
to Saint Marie on that Friday right after the game,

(33:32):
and in North Bay leaving they're coming to the Sux
Saint Mary of like three in the morning and then
playing that game at seven at night. That's tough for end,
That's tough for anybody. Still, it's mid well they played
with and they deserve to win that game.

Speaker 3 (33:43):
Yeah, really really difficult to do that, and I think
the the six to three score probably isn't indicative to
how close the game was, Like I mean, down the
down to the down to the wire really in the
in the third period, and then you have MacDonell who
scores the go ahead goal which ends up being the game,
and then Ray Coffin said, like he ads two empty netters,
but it was right down to the water. All those

(34:05):
games are close in the weekend, you always expect those
games up north to be to be close, hard fought games,
but to be able again to to find different ways
to win, I think is always a good sort of
barometer of good teams. And we've seen the steel Heads
blow teams out. We've also seen them win, you know,
close one goal games. Yes, the the overtime record isn't great,
but you have to remember in the playoffs, three on

(34:26):
three is not going to happen. So it's also, you know,
not part of the game when you get into the postseason.
But they've shown that they can win those close games
and in regulation five on five. So you like to
see that. You like to see that they kind of
can do it in different ways. They can score a
bunch of goals, and they can also defend and get
good goaltending to win as well. And I think that's

(34:47):
kind of what you see with all the good teams
that make deep runs in the OHL exactly.

Speaker 2 (34:52):
And that's what good teams are going to do. They're
gonna find ways to win, right, And the goaltending found
that the goaltending won the games for them, well, was
awesome in those two games and whatnot. And the good
teams find ways to win and the bad teams find
ways to lose. That's the way it goes in any sport, right,
and it goes in football, goes in hockey. I mean
football teams go oh, and I mean NFL leave the
Browns for example, they could be up twenty they can

(35:14):
be up twenty one, twenty one, twenty one to ten
with one minute left and they'll blow it. Yeah, I'm
mean so whatever, you know, twenty one ten. Yeah, I'll
be watching the TV. I'll go like this and I say, oh, yeah,
I say, I look this up. Not over yet? No, No,
I say, it's not over yet. You know, say, if
I'm watching it with a friend or something, what do

(35:35):
you mean it's not over yet? It's over. There's like
two No, trust me, trust me, it's not over yet.
Hey twenty twenty twenty one, that gets the ball if
they turn the ball over and whatever.

Speaker 3 (35:46):
So just that's what they say. Good teams find ways
to win and bad teams find ways to lose and
story Mikey. But the Browns they might be finding ways, so,
you know, And I love.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
Them so much. I love him so much. I can't
help it, you know. And I still say to this day,
if banded up winning the Super Bowl and I see
if I'm alive, God forbid, I mean, God forbid, God helping,
I hope. And if they win the Super Bowl and
I see somebody wearing a Cleveland Brown socket, you're done right.
I'm gonna be going up to him on the street
and saying, excuse me, sir, or excuse me man in

(36:20):
a nice way. What did you like to start liking
the Browns? And I know we talked about this before,
but this bandwagon stuff, I can't stand it. Man, all right,
so let's let's move on, Brendan. You know what. Then
the third game of the road trip against the Sudbury
Wolves three to two win in overtime for Sudbury boy
boy the Steelheads overtime woes. I guess you could say

(36:40):
continue with the three on three. But it was a
good game. It was a back and forth game. It
was a good Central Division game. Again. Jack Ivankovic was
absolutely phenomenal. He was second star of that game. Brendan.
I mean, he stopped thirty five to thirty eight shots again,
and I think a little bit of bad luck at
the end with that shot. And then it came, I
mean right to cure to Walton. I mean, you talk

(37:02):
about a perfect bounce right right on the side on
the right and he one times an end but uh,
great Central Vision battle and to come up with five,
come up with a point in Sudbury, Uh was good.
And I thought he could have had too. But I
just wish you goes.

Speaker 3 (37:18):
Sometimes that's right, and and not only a perfect bounce
to find care of all but but but but one
of the best saves I think I've ever seen before that.

Speaker 2 (37:29):
So he saved it and it might have went off
the post a little bit too, though.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
I think it's a tough angle. I think it hit
his stick and just deflected straight back out like it
was just it was an unlucky. Obviously unlucky, but but yeah,
it's when you come away with with five of six
on on an Northern road trip. I mean, you gotta
be happy no matter how you win the games, like

(37:54):
to be able to put those kind of points up
on that trip is is always something that you're looking
to do. And as you mentioned, the goaltending was phenomenal
all three games, Jack in the in the North Bay
and the Subbury game, and Gillespie was perfect as well
in the game against Sussein Marie. So definitely some good
takeaways from that from that Northern road trip and the Steelheads, Yeah,

(38:18):
you know what, like you said, the the overtime woes continue.
That's ten overtime losses this season. I mean I think
that's five more than any other team in the league. Yes, yeah,
so it's you know, it's just one of those things.
It just hasn't worked out for them three on three.
But you know what, they battled on that trip. They
battled in that game and couldn't quite come away with

(38:39):
the win. But again, six or five or six points
you're always going to take that.

Speaker 2 (38:43):
Not all type stuff. It could turn around the hurry yep.
Next time they played three three, they could they could
win three in a row. Whatever, all right, so five
out six on that road trip. Then they come back
home and they played in the school day game against
the Oshawa General It's fat shottle Ford to nothing and Ashwa.
They played a good game. They played a really really
good road game, coming up with a lot of intensity,
finishing off their checks. Brendan and Jacob Oster was pretty good.

(39:05):
I thought maybe the quality of scoring chances could have
been better from the Steelheads. But Jacob Oster was good.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
He was yeah. I mean when when he needed to
make a save, he made it. But you're right, I
don't think they had a ton of quality chances. I
mean I can think of maybe maybe three three, yeah, yeah,
two to three kind of really really good chances that
Austro had made great saves on. But but it just
didn't really seem like they had it right from the
drop of the puck to start the game the first period,

(39:33):
the puck management wasn't great. They gave the puckaway quite
a bit in their own zone. It just didn't seem
like the passes were connecting to well. It just kind
of seemed like from the beginning to the end, it
was just a little bit disjointed, just didn't seem like
there was kind of great flow to the to the game,
and you never know at the early starts that you
always have have something to do with it as well.
I wouldn't put too much stock in that game and

(39:54):
kind of where they want to go for the rest
of the season. It was more so you just an effort,
an effort that obviously wasn't going to be good enough
to beat a great team in Oshawa, but a lot
of circumstances around it with the early morning start that
they could have went into as well. Not making excuses
for sure. I mean they still lost, they still gave
up the two points and Oshwa still came in there

(40:16):
and played a great game. You have to give Oshawa
a ton of credit. I mean, like they were they played.
You said it on the broadcast a few times, and
and you said it off off the air too. They
played the perfect road game.

Speaker 2 (40:27):
Perfect.

Speaker 3 (40:27):
There was just they just sucked the life out of
the crowd, They sucked the life out of the team,
and there was just no space on the ice. They
played the perfect game. Really, So how many.

Speaker 2 (40:38):
Asked for did you take during that game? Did you
take any Oh, No, you didn't have to.

Speaker 3 (40:43):
No, you didn't have to take any the headset.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
Yeah I didn't. I have the microphone, lucky you you know.

Speaker 3 (40:50):
And I will say, yes, yes it was. It was loud,
but it was good to see the crowd full though,
and everybody you know, passionate. I'd take the loudness any day.

Speaker 2 (41:00):
No. I took a headache any day of the week,
of course, just the same when you have three whatever.
It was close thirty eight hundred kids screaming in the stands. Man. Yeah,
the one time I had was just going, you know,
back and forth, and I remember asking you guys, any a, no, no, anyways.
Always good to see and the building would jumping. Good

(41:24):
to see the kids having a good time. Of course,
off from all sorts of different schools I'd like to see.
I mean there's there's not I don't think every OHL
team does the school day games. I think every OHL
team should do two school day games a year.

Speaker 3 (41:38):
I think it was awesome. I think it's awesome to
get and you know what, maybe it maybe draws some
kids to want to play hockey too, Like you know
what I think that is. I think it has a
lot of benefits and and it's always has a lot
of energy in the in the crowd, no matter where
you're playing. Remember a few years back in Hamilton when
the Sea Lets went there, that was an energy filled game.

(41:58):
I would say, yeah, so it is. I agree. I
think it's awesome. I think it's something all the teams
should definitely do.

Speaker 2 (42:04):
Yeah, like what doesn't do it? You know? And uh
who else in these I don't think I don't in
the division. I don't think Barry does it. I don't
think Sunbury does it. I don't think but Kingston did it.
Kingston had one. I think Ottawa had one. But just
to say so anyway, every team should do it. Why
not get the kids out there, have fun and uh

(42:27):
you know, whoop it up, whoop it up? Bring it.
I mean, yeah, I love seeing the kids have a
good time. I mean I was when I was doing
the interviews and stuff and you see the kids. But hey,
you know, can I have your autograph to the players?
Obviously no, no, no, just at one time with that
one little boy, which was nice. But uh yeah, but

(42:51):
I mean all the kids you right, and then I
love that kind of stuff, right of course, Yeah, they
gotta do that stuff. More like you said, the kids
love to play hockey, and they'll see this and they'll
want to come to the games more into the attraction.
They'll go home and they'll say, hey, mommy daddy, I
saw good hockey game today. Can I go to the
next game with you? Or whatnot? Right? I mean, you know,
mummy daddy, I did see a fight. You know. Maybe

(43:12):
mmy daddy.

Speaker 3 (43:13):
Might say a couple of.

Speaker 2 (43:15):
Them sure, yeah, but will be like, okay, let's go right.
You know, mummy daddy, I saw a fight. I saw
a fight. Yeah, I saw a fight. Oh all right,
so let's go okay quickly, Brendan, let's go over the

(43:36):
Steelhead's last games here in the schedule. So let's let's
go over here very very quickly, because I know we're
running out of time here because we're talking about that
school day game a lot. So uh. They'll be playing
in North Bay Battalion of course, that's coming up on.

Speaker 4 (43:51):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (43:53):
Well, that will be done by the time this is done.
And then the Wolves coming to town on the Tuesday, right,
and then they go on the road the very next
day to play at Peterborough. Not easy, not Those are
the three h three games that are gonna be coming
up for the Steelheads. And then you got, uh, they
still got the Barry Colts one more.

Speaker 3 (44:14):
Time and that comes Friday, you know after so so
they played Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday. Like that's a tough week.

Speaker 2 (44:22):
Mm hmm, that's tough. That's big time tops. I mean,
you got the Barry Colts coming back one more time.
You got Peterborough Peachers because you got them twice. Uh,
they're gonna be coming back to the Kingston as well. Kingston.
It's going to be the very last game of the
regular season. How fast this season has gone to see
too so, I mean Eastern Conference opponents and it seems like,

(44:43):
I don't know, Kingston and Austra they're fighting for that
fourth spot. Man, so they but hey, Delan, it's got
to keep going. They got to keep going, and you
can't let it keep the pedal. They got to keep
the pedal on the metal here and wrap up that
fist spot. I'm not sure if they're gonna catch anybody
for the fourth spot. Doesn't look like they're going to
catch Barry. Let's be real for that for first place
in the Central Division. And so it looks like Barry

(45:05):
is going to stay in that second spot in the East,
so there'll be a two games seven matchup there. But
I like what Parker said too. You know, we'll play anybody,
doesn't matter Oshawa's anything. And I think they match up
aul against anybody.

Speaker 3 (45:16):
That's my Yeah, No, I agree with you. I don't
really see like one team that I was like, oh,
I would really want to avoid them, or one team
where it's like, oh, I think they would really match
up great against them. Agree. I think it's I think
it's pretty even throughout those teams that they could play,
Like you said, probably won't be Barry, but it looking
more like it'll be you know, Kingston or Oshawa, even

(45:39):
Brantford possibly in that mix as well, So any of them. Yeah,
I mean it'll be a good series either way. I
either way, honestly, any of the teams they play, I
expect a six or seven game series. So it's gonna be.

Speaker 2 (45:53):
And you know what we could we didn't say this.
We weren't saying this last year what we're saying now right.
I mean last year we were kind of like, yeah, sure,
if you want to play the Berry Colts the first
or whatever, you know, just to say, right, this year,
totally different team, totally different mindset. You could tell, well,
I'm sure they had the same mindset there last year,
but this year it's it's go time this year and

(46:15):
this year it's so much it's so much different. So
all right, So anything going on with you life? Tips? Anything?
I know? I got one I mentioned on the broadcast,
you can.

Speaker 3 (46:25):
Go ahead, give it to.

Speaker 2 (46:29):
No. No, I'm sick or tired of always saying if
I sound like a grumpy, grumpy kid, don't. But but
all right, I'll say this, And I started on the broadcast. Okay,
all right, I gonna say this is the nicest way
possible because I want everybody to be nice, right, So
if you're gonna okay, So let's the old shell is
the Developmental League. All these kids are fighting for a

(46:54):
career in hockey. They're moving away from home, they're living
in different places, away from their parents. It's a grind.
They're going to school, whatnot, and accepting on the ice,
giving it. They're all And then if somebody makes a
bad play or something or whatnot. Some sites, and I

(47:16):
I would suggest that if I was a player, I
wouldn't even go on a social media, some sites, and
we've talked about this, and so what I'm trying to
say is, don't rip on the players. Don't be that
guy that's going to rip on somebody that's sixteen to
twenty years old. These guys are fighting every shift, every
moment of their life, and they're trying to make it.

(47:38):
They're going to school, as I said, they're living in
a different place in a billet house. This is a
total different dimension for a sixteen to twenty year old.
These guys are not twenty five to thirty year old's
thirty thirty five year olds. So again my point is,
don't rip these kids on social media. If somebody makes
a mistake or whatnot, Oh you know, why did he?

(48:00):
Why did he? You know, he's this, he's that, he's this,
he's that. I see sometimes, you know what, it makes
me sick bright then it really does. It really makes
me sick.

Speaker 3 (48:09):
So we have we talked about it before too, you know,
even just being in the arena like fans as well,
and obviously on social media too. And yeah, I mean
you want, you know, you want your teams to win,
and I get it, and like obviously you're gonna you know,
you might have opinion about how the team played or
how they you know, match up against certain team. But but

(48:30):
when you go after specific players, I think that's where
you kind of exactly be the fabric of it. And yeah,
I mean, it just doesn't need to happen. And I
think that's I think that's the easiest way to say.

Speaker 2 (48:39):
It, you know. And there's I don't want to say it,
but there's one site, of course, and everybody knows this site.
I wish they would shut it down. And I'm not
gonna mention it though, because I don't want to cause controversy.
But am I in my mind just be nice when
you're tweeting out things or whatever it is, because like
I said, they're kids. These guys are kids, they're they're adults. Yeah,

(49:01):
they do act a lot mature, so a lot of
them than their age. Let's be real here, you know.
But it's nice. They're eating different meals, they're eating different
stuff that you know, somebody else is being their cook,
not their mom, right, So that's gonna do it for
my Lifetip Brendan, anything from you.

Speaker 3 (49:21):
Well, I know, I like the sentiment. I like the
center that you gave miank you.

Speaker 2 (49:26):
Thank you, thank you. All right, so that's gonna do
for this episode of True Talk. Big thanks to Parker
von Richter for coming on, Brendan Lang, Michael Padre. Of course,
we always have a good time here, and thank you
so much for listening, and we'll see you next time
right here on True Talk on Saga Night sixteen.
