2 Corinthians 8:9 reveals the heart of the gospel through the voluntary humility of Christ: “Though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might be rich.” Paul anchors generosity, sacrifice, and grace in the incarnation itself. Jesus did not lose riches by accident—He laid them aside by choice so that sinners could gain what they could never earn. In this Faith Friday edition of Morning Manna, ...

Proverbs 18:22–24 highlights God’s design for blessing through relationships. Finding a wife is described as finding a good thing and receiving favor from the Lord, reminding us that covenant companionship is a divine gift, not a mere achievement. Yet the passage also warns that many acquaintances do not equal true friendship, while one faithful friend can be closer than a brother. In today’s Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkh...

Proverbs 18:17–21 reveals the necessity of discernment and the life-shaping force of the tongue. The first to present his case may seem right until another examines him, showing that wisdom listens before it judges. Casting lots can settle disputes when human judgment reaches its limits. A brother offended becomes harder to win than a fortified city—yet this verse reads very differently in the Septuagint, which speaks instead of he...

Proverbs 18:13–16 highlights the sharp contrast between foolish haste and wise restraint. Answering a matter before hearing it brings shame and folly, while a wounded spirit can crush even a strong man. The discerning heart seeks knowledge, pursuing understanding rather than reacting impulsively. A person’s gift makes room for him, opening doors even to great men. In today’s Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart explore how ca...

Proverbs 18:9–12 contrasts careless living with steadfast trust in the Lord. The slothful person—slow in duty and effort—is counted as a brother to the destroyer, for negligence tears down what diligence builds. Yet the name of the Lord stands as a strong tower where the righteous find refuge and safety. Meanwhile, the rich man trusts in his wealth as a high wall, though it is only imagination. Pride lifts a man toward destruction,...

Deuteronomy 8:18 reminds God’s people that prosperity is never self-made. “It is He who gives you power to get wealth,” Moses declares, grounding Israel’s success not in human strength but in God’s covenant faithfulness. The warning is clear: when blessings increase, pride is near; when pride rises, forgetfulness follows. In this Faith Friday edition of Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart explore how God empowers His people,...

Proverbs 18:5–8 exposes how corruption in judgment and corruption in speech ruin individuals and communities alike. Showing partiality to the wicked or denying justice to the innocent perverts the very foundation of righteousness. A fool’s careless words invite conflict and invite a beating by their own recklessness. And the whisperer’s gossip—though it tastes sweet going down—buries itself deep in the heart like poison. In today’s...

Proverbs 18:1–4 uncovers the dangers of self-seeking isolation and the destructive force of unrestrained speech. The one who separates himself rejects sound wisdom and pursues selfish desire, while the fool erupts in quarrels and despises discernment. Yet a wise person’s words are like deep waters—refreshing, steady, and life-giving—and the fountain of understanding becomes a source of strength to all who hear. In today’s Morning M...

Proverbs 17:25–28 highlights the grief that foolishness brings and the dignity that wisdom preserves. A foolish child becomes heartache to his parents, robbing them of joy. A wicked person distorts justice by accepting bribes, yet wise people restrain their words and govern their spirits. Even a fool seems wise when he keeps silent, for measured speech reveals understanding. In today’s Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart exa...

Proverbs 17:20–24 contrasts the inward distortion of the wicked with the steady discernment of the wise. A perverse heart finds no good, and a deceitful tongue falls into trouble. Foolish children become grief to their parents; a merry heart strengthens like good medicine, while a broken spirit dries up the bones. The wicked take bribes in secret, but understanding sets wise eyes toward the right path, while the fool’s gaze wanders...

James 2:17–22 confronts the difference between a faith that merely speaks and a faith that truly lives. “Faith without works is dead,” James declares, showing that genuine belief always expresses itself through obedience. Abraham’s willingness to offer Isaac reveals how faith is made complete—perfected—when it acts upon God’s word. In this Faith Friday edition of Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart examine the vital union be...

Proverbs 17:17–19 reveals the character of true loyalty and the danger of contentious living. A real friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity—yet those who strike hands in rash pledges or pursue strife bring ruin upon themselves. To love transgression is to love destruction, and to exalt one’s own gate is to invite a fall. In today’s Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart explore the strength of covenant f...

Proverbs 17:14–16 warns how quickly foolishness escalates into destruction. The beginning of strife is like opening a floodgate—once the waters break loose, the damage becomes uncontrollable. Only a fool justifies wickedness or condemns the righteous, and the one who lacks wisdom wastes every opportunity placed in his hands. In today’s Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart examine the danger of unchecked conflict, the moral cl...

Proverbs 17:5–9 exposes four defining traits of the wise and the foolish. To mock the poor is to insult their Maker, and to rejoice in calamity invites judgment. Children’s children bless the aged, and parents become the glory of their offspring. Excellent speech does not fit the fool, nor do lies belong on the lips of rulers. And the wise know how to cover an offense, while the gossip spreads strife and destroys friendships. In to...

In this special replay of the June 19, 2023 Morning Manna broadcast, we revisit two of Jesus’ shortest and most powerful parables—the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl of Great Price (Matthew 13:44–46). These twin stories reveal the incomparable value of God’s Kingdom and the radical joy that compels true discipleship. A man stumbles upon treasure and sells everything with gladness; a merchant searches for the finest pearl and gives up...

Proverbs 17:3–4 unveils two powerful spiritual realities: God refines His people like silver and gold, and the voices we listen to shape our character and destiny. Just as precious metals require intense heat to reveal purity, believers undergo trials designed by the Master Refiner to expose and remove spiritual impurities. And while God purifies the heart, Solomon warns that the wicked are drawn to lies because deception resonates...

Proverbs 17:1–2 contrasts two powerful realities: the quiet strength of a peaceful home and the disruptive force of strife, even in houses filled with abundance. A single dry crust with peace is better than a feast soaked in conflict. And wisdom elevates a servant above a shameful son, showing that God honors character over position. In today’s Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart uncover these timeless truths, calling listen...

    The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
