Speaker 1 (00:00):
How many ounces per day will you typically consume?

Speaker 2 (00:02):
I've had up to like five hundred, six hundred and
seven hundred before I just I couldn't go through that
pul Fritz probably one.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
I just take it straight right, forty four ounce mountain dew. Yeah,
that's like yelling wow, that is huge. I've been getting
it for I think eight or nine years, nine years straight.
Every day, Utah is addicted to soda, with over forty
percent of the population Mormon. Well, they're not allowed to
drink alcohol or hot drinks. Apparently soda is approved by

(00:26):
God as dedicated Soda drive through chains like Swig So
Delicious and Fizz explode across Utah. Is this soda craze
an innocent sweet treat for Mormons looking for a caffeinated
alternative to coffee.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
These are basically cocktails without the alcohol.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Or is it a silent killer poisoning the people of
Utah type two diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and liver damage.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
It is very concerned. I joke with my friends, like
if you woke up dead next to me, like we'd
all know the reason why.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
The reason why be because of its consumption of soda.
Where we meet up with perhaps the most soda addicted
man in Utah. I was curious to see how many
people out here started their day one of the many
soda drive throughs starting with swig or hazard. There's gonna
be a line circling out the building.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
Jesus, you get a forty four ounce soda right here?

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Will A single can of twelve ount soda has twenty
nine to forty two grams of sugar. CDC recommends no
more than fifty grams per day. But how much soda
are these people drinking? I will buy you, guys your
soda if you tell me what you're ordering. Diet Joliel.
I think it's Texas top big Al. What's in the
big Al big Al is diet coke, coconut lime, and cranberry.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
I disc get a regular forty four ounce mountain dewth
a little.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Bit extra eye. Okay, that's a big boy though. Yeah,
we go big in the morning. Just take it straight.
Forty four ounce mountain dew Yep? Do you come here often?

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Daily?

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Every day unless summer?

Speaker 1 (01:54):
No ice? I've been getting it for I think eight
or nine years, nine years straight every day, Wow, and
maybe five others drinks for all my kids. What size
are we thinking?

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Oh? Forty four gotta get me through the day.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
You asked how many times I come here? Yeah, that's
once twice week. I drink soda every day, probably do
probably eighty ounces? Eh oh, yeah, one of them. I
like these big boys right here. What size are you thinking?
A big boy? I mean, all right? Can we Oh
you have a sweek up. Well, it's a loyalist right here.

(02:26):
But besides the literal addiction to sugar, what made the
soda addicts drink so much? Is it their Mormon faith?
Before I had to other soda drive through competitors in
the area, I was curious how common it was to
buy soda from the countless gas stations out here selling it.
Let's get the daily fixed briefly, start the morning off
with two big blues. What do you have?

Speaker 4 (02:46):
Right?

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Is this your daily starter? I guess you could say
that every day.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Yeah, we got a whole new spouting machine because the
forty ounce Stanley's did not fit.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
How many people a day come in here and get
a nice fill up their Stanley's?

Speaker 3 (03:01):
I would say probably one in.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Fire one EPI play these big cups massive sarifoam cups.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
Right here, one dollar seventy nine first full free ninety
nine fifty two ounce Big Boy right here.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
I'm tempted to buy it first free.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
No, no, no, I've found the Big Boy seventeen ninety
nine three twenty nine free refill.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
This thing is huge. We have the Coca Cola non
the brothers used to drink on. Did he ever get
kidney stones? That's good? Seriously, but I wanted to give
this cup to someone who can enjoy it every single day.
Are you a big soda drinker?

Speaker 5 (03:39):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (03:39):
No, really, I was gonna give this to you after
I bought it for I. You're my guy. Now, what's
your name? I'm mad Nate. We're doing a video on
soda addiction in Utah. Alright, how often you drink soda?
Pretty much every day? If you die one day due
to like like a stroke or like diabetes, don't blame me, Okay,
Oh I won't diabetes.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Brothers in my family already, so I ain't got it,
So I'm not worried about it down one way, one
way or another.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
This is true. I gotta ask you, how many people
come in here and fill up like a big goal
for like that forty four ouncer. Almost everyone everyone, Oh
my god, this is crazy man, and it has the
clowns on there to remind us how foolish we are
drinking this stuff. Man, I drink like two to four
Red bulls. Dare oh worse. I know I'm knowing to judge,
but I stay away from soda for the most part.

Speaker 5 (04:22):
Drink every morning.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
You got rebels and Coca cola. Gosh, wow, that is huge. Yeah,
don't have a heart attack. Okay, Well, I do feel
a little bit guilty, given this whole video is sort
of a psa to not drink excessive mounts of soda.
I may have changed the outcome of that man's life,
hopefully not for the worst. He's definitely gonna die much

(04:44):
younger than he would have. We got the diet, coke,
sprite and Coca cola, all the Coca Cola. Look at
the sprite on the freaking gas station. Subliminal brainwash from
twenty four to seven, unavoidable sprite sprite on all three
of them. Sprite sprite, sprite, sprite on this pump, Sprite
on this pump. Get some a right. Coca Cola fridge,
Coca Cola fridge, pepsi, fridge, pepsi pepsi Coca cola right there.

(05:05):
It's everywhere, man. Subliminal marketing is a thing. If you're
exposed to an image enough times, you may be compelled
to buy it when you face it in reality. Well,
you might see fentyl foil and hypodermic needles in Portland
or Seattle or LA. You see big gulps out here.
So we headed onwards towards Provo, Utah, where eighty plus
percent of the population is Mormon, and straight to Swiggs

(05:26):
Competitor So Delicious to see if the more Mormon the
town was, the more soda they drank. I'm hoping for
a line out the door. How many of these Mormons
are chugging soda? I want to see these Mormons.

Speaker 6 (05:37):
Okay, look at all those options. Take a look at
the menu. We had cher Delicious, JoJo's Mojo, My Jam,
National Parks, Southern Gentlemen, your mom, You're welcome, boy Scout,
butterbrew O'Ryan's second wife, funny.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
And I'd arrived just in time for lunch break, which
out here, man, time for a caffeinated soda refilm. I
like to buy you some soda today we're doing like
a little servey on soda consumption out here? Can I
buy you soda? No shrinks attached? I just want to
know what you're ordering. And often you come here? What
are you getting? And the second wife you come here
every day?

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Okay, so actually, don't tell anyone.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
I go to Swig, but Swig is close. That's okay.
Are people addicted to soda out here? Yeah, i'd say so, okay,
an soda. I like doctor pepper, but honestly, since working here,
my tolerance for like flavors. It's just sensitized. Yeah, common thing.
Or is this kind of a treat.

Speaker 7 (06:26):
It's a common thing.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Okay, I do just a thirty two ounces, but my
boss does a forty four every day, every.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Day, twice a day. It's eighty eight ounces. It's a lot.

Speaker 8 (06:35):
It is literally people's entire world. I'm at in office
right over here, we like shut down twice a day
so that everybody can go get their dirty soda.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Do you shrink beer or anything? I don't. No, it's
note of like a cigarette break, Yeah, your dirt dirty
soda break. Pretty much.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Yeah, it's very big.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
It's a big thing. Yes, Why because they I don't know.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
I think they look at it for like a stress release.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
Soda culture is huge, man, there's nothing else like it.
I mean, the only comparison is like coffee culture.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
And even then, soda culture is much more customizable.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
You say there is a soda addiction in Utah or
soda epidemic, Yes, I would. I'd say SODA's huge in Utah.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Everyone likes soda, everyone likes swig so delicious.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Really really big in Utah. That's the final answer. It's gigantic.
Soda is unstoppable in Utah. He wants to out of here.
How often do you drink soda? Gosh?

Speaker 8 (07:32):
I come here as often as I can, like five
times a week, five or six times a week.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Depends on how stressed I am. I've twice in a row.
Now every day, every day, every day.

Speaker 8 (07:41):
Add yes, I drink soda every day every day, probably
twice or three times daily.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Yeah, I drink soda probably daily. Okay, every day you
come here, not.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
Here, but yeah, I probably drink a soda Papa days.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
I drink what every day? I'm pretty much here? But
how much of this soda consumption was influenced by the
Mormon faith? So are you guys Mormon, I am. You
can drink caffeine, but not hot drinks. Correct, Well, like
hot drinks you can have like hot chocolate, yeah, but
not hot coffee or hot tea correct. Yeah, that's according

(08:15):
to the words of wisdom? Is that what it is?
Got it right on the dot? What's the Mormond non
Mormon ratio out here? A lot? I don't know.

Speaker 8 (08:23):
I don't know it's changing. I would say you need
to check demographic trends because it's a different community to community.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
Is that why SODA's big out here?

Speaker 4 (08:32):
Probably substitution for coffee?

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Okay? Do you drink coffee? Yes? Oh you do? Are
you Mormon? No? Okay? I wouldn't say it is for me.

Speaker 7 (08:42):
I would think the soda is more of the alternative.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
For alcohol out here. Interesting, these are basically cocktails without
the alcohol. You do not drink coffee. I'm kind of
a bad Mormon. I've had coffee.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
I just don't I think it tastes burnt.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
It seemed as if people drank soda to feel some
stress relief, to get that sugar rush, and I feel
caffeinated to keep pushing through the day. I have a
gift for our redheaded friend. Thank you a tip for you.

know we're a bit of a nuisance, but thank you

How many customers do you serve per day out here?
Probably do a couple hundred, A couple hundred, four or
five or five hundred. Yeah, what do you say to Coda?
What are we think?

Speaker 2 (10:41):
We get a lot of people here.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
How often do you drink soda every day? Yeah? I
usually go to swig once a week. How many ounces
per day do you consume? Were your core fifty ounces
a day? I shouldn't admit it is Utah addicted to soda?
I think so, But I don't think there's a problem
with them, no problem. How often do you get them?
Probably four times a week. Honestly, are you addicted to so? Definitely?
What are you guys gonna get today? I'll probably get
a hula girl and you spring playing. They even had

(11:05):
soda drive throughs attached to the car washes. Oh splash,
it's another joint, Another joint. Man drink of the week,
Sweet New Mountain Dew, Almond Vanilla Dream. I'm gonna get
a sixty four ounce. See how big this bad boy feels.
You can turn a monster ghost, Alami Prime, Red Bull, Rockstar,
or bucked up into a specialty drink. What's the most
popular beverage you guys have?

Speaker 5 (11:26):
Mountains?

Speaker 1 (11:27):
All right? Mountain Monster? It is with Red Bull? Yeah?
Thank you? Yeah, I want a heart attack. Do you
think Utah is addicted to soda? YEA drink soda once today?
Are you addicted?

Speaker 5 (11:39):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (11:39):
I would say so wow, that is as tang. Are
you also addicted to soda? I wouldn't say addicted, but
I love soda. Can I give you this? Seeah? It is? Yeah,
I've had like three Red Bulls today. Let me know
how it tastes. It tastes pretty good. That's like red
Bull Mountain Dew. Oh yeah. Do you ever go to
like swig or so delicious. No, I don't, but I
know my friends do a lot. Are they addicted to soda?
Oh yeah, yeah, they are a huge here in Utah.

(12:01):
Oh yeah, it's big. You know. They got creams. You're
a They just throw whatever is some candy too. Oh yeah,
they've got can't eat them, especially the moms here. Oh
the moms love. Oh yeah, they all got their their
sweet streets. Oh yeah, they're forty four ounce diet doctor pepper.
They just sit all throughout the day. Utah, you're on
top right now. You might be my favorite state. You
guys are so nice. But one man in particular absolutely
mugs these mere mortals in terms of soda consumption. His

(12:24):
name is Steve. What do you have in your hands?

Speaker 2 (12:27):
I have a one hundred ounce mug, and then I
think this is one hundred and twenty Try to remember,
I need to check the suspect sheet.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
But yeah, so two hundred and twenty ounces in total
right here, we're about to fill these up. How much
soda have you drank already today?

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Probably are drinking a couple hundred ounces already?

Speaker 1 (12:38):
How many hundred?

Speaker 2 (12:39):
Like two hundred two at least?

Speaker 1 (12:41):
How many ounces per day, will you typically consume.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
I would say, on average, depending on my workflow, two
hundred to four hundred. I've had access up to like
five hundred and six hundred and seven hundred before. It
just depends how much I'm exercising, how hot it is,
and the time of year.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
And you have a loving family as far as I know.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Yeah, I'm assuming they love me.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Yeah, you have a wife, a couple of kids, a
couple of kids too. Are they concerned for your soda
consumption habits here? This is a little bit insane.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
You know.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
They love soda too, not quite as much as me.
I think there's a concern back in their mind. But
I'm very the irony as I am very health conscious,
so I get checked out pretty regularly, blood tests, doctor checkup,
you know, go to the urologists, make sure I'm doing good.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
Three We got soda over here too, forty four ounce
there we go. So we've noticed a lot of people
out here love their soda. Is that a Utah specific phenomenon?
It is.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
Utah is the headquarters of the Mormons strong majority of
Mornons or they're also known as the Church of Jewish
Christ Lattery Saints. Anyway, active or Orthodox Mormons. The health
coats not to drink coffee or tea. Now there are
a lot of non Normans here and to drink coffee.
But like so, the caffeine is the stimulant, and a
lot of these drinks right. So that's why it's very
common here in Utah to have these caffeinated soft drinks.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Give us a smile. You see their bright white. You're
drinking several hundred ounces of soda per day. Look at
those shoppers again.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
I'm very conscious when I drink soda. I try to
go straight over the tongue and down the throat. I
don't switch it around.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
You ever drink anything with sugar enough.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
I mean very rarely to taste it, but I'll never
I'm a foodie for a side business, so I want
my calories coming from food rather than beverage.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
You bring two of these into a gas station. Typically
is this standard procedures take kind of a new one
I got. I started with this one.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
I only gave me one hundred ounces, and I went
to this one percent per ounce. Like cost wise, this
is the cheapest method because you're paying eleven bucks or
a twelve pack, and I can fill up equal with
equivalent to that for you know, two to four bucks.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
Have you ever had a heart attack or a stroke
or anything? Never? Is your wife concerned for you? Yeah?
I mean I'm sure she's.

Speaker 7 (14:28):
I think she's concerned in some capacity.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
Is this a little too much soda in your opinion?
I don't know. He's gonna do with it. He's gonna
drink it.

Speaker 5 (14:35):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (14:35):
Is he gonna drink it? He's gonna drink the equivalent
of four of these one hundred ounce leaders per day,
sort of a uh, supersized me with soda. You want
a little extra flavor dash.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
Or I'm gonna go to my house.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
I can show you.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
I actually flavorings at my house.

Speaker 6 (14:46):
Two one for my cans.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
Right, this is all sugar free, all sugar free. And
how many years have you been drinking this much soda
like this?

Speaker 2 (14:52):
Probably the last two or three?

Speaker 1 (14:53):
What are your thoughts on all the soda? Are you
impressed by this? Four of these a day? Does that
amaze you? I mean not the only damn, You're not
the only one two hundred ounces, Trevor. Does anyone else
come in and get this much soda? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (15:07):
Yeah, you know, I think I've only made a handful
of hundred bouncers out in the while.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
How many people do you see a day coming in
here drink at soda? A lot, A lot, hundreds hundred, okay,
probably a thousand a day. A thousand a day? Do
you have soda? Oh yo? How many a day? I
get like two every other day? Not even gonna lie.
He's taking four of these a day? Are you impressed? You?
You take four of the day free everything that's fire?

(15:32):
All right? Thank you, bro. Enjoy your coke colla. He's
immune to soda. We're innahead to Smith's refill his inventory.
And how many sodas will that require?

Speaker 2 (15:38):
I did run one run last week and got sixty packs,
and that's I mean, that's probably half my inventory for
a week or two.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
For a week or two, yeah, half babe.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
I could I could stock up for a month probably
if I do two trips like that.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
Now just depends if I'm.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
Homa because I travel a lot, but I'm hardcourt at home.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yeah, so wow, okay, let's see it happen. That's concerning though. Oh,
fellow enjoyer that's in Baja zero. Oh oh, he's got
some good taste. How long will this last right here.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
I typically only put these in like if I got
a sprite zero, which is or a Fresco which This
depends how committed I am. I guess I've gone through
sprite zero where I've probably gone through this and a
few days.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
So it was time to get Steve two weeks worth
of soda. You heard that right? Oh? Your kids are
becoming addicts now too?

Speaker 2 (16:20):
Yes, but I mean since I just saw around around
so conveniently, they.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
Just drink it, right, how do your kids?

Speaker 2 (16:26):
So that's something I am worried about.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
We're gonna melt their teeth? Yes, potentially. We gotta emphasize
this is sugar free. We are yet to see the
long term consequences of chronic aspartame super loose consumption. After
purchasing six hundred and fifty dollars worth of soda, I
wanted to know what Steve's loving family thought about his
addiction and if it was time for an intervention real quick.

(16:49):
But I'd be like going down the road. You fuck it.

We made it to Steve's garage. It's time to unveil
the hall Cracker open. Hello. Hi? Are you Her name
is Capron, My name is Tyler. Yeah. Do you want
to give any thoughts? Are you concerned for yourself?

Speaker 3 (17:27):
I'm a little concerned.

Speaker 1 (17:28):
We funded the hall. I know it's like giving a
drug addict. No, I don't know about this. You know
it's a good sale at least no No six, one
hundred and fifty bucks.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
That's like the one good thing that Stephen, I guess
does is that he always shops up.

Speaker 1 (17:42):
On the sales. What goes through your head when you
see hauls like this? It is concerning.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
My kids are becoming addicted.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
What is their beverage of choice? We try to do.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
Non caffeinated at least, but I only do you like Canada?
I'm not addicted.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
You've been picking up a lot of his cans he
leaves around the home or what?

Speaker 3 (18:00):
That's probably my least favorite part of the addiction. He
is really messy. If he did like a pack a day,
I don't know that I'd be as concerned. But when
it's like so much, I joke with my friends like
if he woke up dead next to me, like we'd
all know the reason why.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
We don't know if that's even possible.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
It would need to be studied obviously.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
Okay, significantly healthier than her.

Speaker 1 (18:22):
Yes, that's true. Well, you love him no matter how
this addiction evolves over time.

Speaker 3 (18:26):
If he was like spending all of our money, then no,
I would not stay with him.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
He knows the line.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
If he started going into debt for this, it would
it would be divorce.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
I'm not a CPA or tax advisor, but I can
write off my purchases because I'm posting about it.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
Right. You're even smarter now the more I think about it.
This is all a ride off. Yeah, your wife said
you may have something in like a basement or something
as well.

Speaker 5 (18:47):
I have fridges, I think.

Speaker 1 (18:49):
Can we see it? Yeah, we're headed towards the secret
layer here.

Speaker 7 (18:53):
This is our tranis so a lot of parties here.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
This is my favorite fridge who chills the quickest I
could go feel that pol for It's probably in one day.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
And so when you wake up, you go to the garage,
come all the way down here and fill it up.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
Typically when I up, first thing I do is go
to the gym and I'll have I'll come down here,
grab probably four sodas, two for the ride.

Speaker 1 (19:11):
For the ride, probably five minute drive, and then poor
for the ride five minute drive. You'll take four and
a five minute drive. Oh yeah, for sure, I'm gonna
press the timer in three two one. I'm sorry before
I can't even read to it. It was gone. Look at Wow,
I'm a pretty average sugar. Let's see how long it

(19:31):
takes me pretty two?

Speaker 5 (19:33):
