(00:02):
Australia, the sixth largest country onEarth, an ancient, rugged and unforgiving
land with abundant animal life, bothbeautiful and deadly. Found within its all

(00:25):
inspiring landscapes and natural beauty, existsa deep history of unexplained mysteries for anyone
with the courage to investigate them.Tonight we joined Ben on a journey across

(00:48):
this vast island continent in search ofanswers to events that have reshaped the lives
of so many that have been exposedto Unexplained Phenomena Australia with your host,

(01:08):
Get everyone, and welcome to anotherepisode of Unexplained Phenomena Australia. Today we're
going to have a look at areally interesting UFO flap. Yes, that's
right, a UFO flap. Andwhat is a flap? That's when UFOs
appear in one location over an extendedperiod of time or in an area.

(01:29):
And that definitely happened in this location, which is Kempsey in New South Wales
in nineteen seventy one and nineteen seventytwo. And how I came across this
interesting series of events was I havegot a whole vast collection of old newspaper
articles and I was going through themand I found this big bunch that had

(01:55):
been put together and it outlines somereally interesting and somewhat crazy events that occurred
in Kempsey in nineteen seventy one,and I thought, wow, this is
just perfect for this show. SoI got it all out and I just
started reading through it and going throughit and all the informations on yellow old

(02:16):
paper nineteen seventy one, and Ithought, this is a really great example
of a flap because there are manymany people who reported it, and it
was actually captured by the local newspaper, the Argus. So the newspapers are
the history. They capture everything thathappens in the local community. And I'm

(02:40):
not sure whether the event is rememberedup there now or not. A lot
of the people might have might havedied by now, who had that who
had those experiences? And if Iever get the chance to go up that
way, I would certainly ask somequestions. But it's a long way from
from where I am and not aneasy task. So the Argus newspaper really

(03:00):
got involved with it, and whywouldn't they, I mean, you know,
newspapers love love stories that sell newspapers, and they don't really go through
it in an overly sensational way, which I like as well. So it's
not you know, you know, alien crazy alien stuff on the lawn or

(03:21):
anything like that at all. Butthey report what the witnesses say, and
they report it in a pretty straightforwardmanner, and the local community just embraced
it, and it's like anything else. Once one mushroom pops up, the
others start to appear as well.So I thought the best way to tackle
this is to look at the newspaperarticles and to look at them in the

(03:46):
order in which they occurred, andyou and the whole story starts to reveal
itself, and people are seeing thatother people have seen something, and over
here and over there, and Kempseyis surrounded by of really small places that
are barely dots on a map. They really are. And I'd never heard

(04:08):
of these locations, and some ofthe names are a little bit strange,
but but it's great, you know, it really is. And you can
see that that entire region in nineteenseventy one was the focus of UFO activity.
Why who knows, You just can'ttell why. But the first event

(04:30):
was really an incredible event that was. It was just sensational and when I
read about it, I thought, wow, this is just something that that
is incredible. And so the Argus, which is the local newspaper. So
but before I before I start,I should just give you a little bit

(04:50):
of a grounding on where Kempsey actuallyis. Let just be with me on
tick. I'll just bring that upfor you. So this Kempsey just to
give your geographical location. So therewe go. There is Victoria in the
bottom of the picture, Melbourne,Tasmania below that, and then you've got

(05:10):
Sydney in New South Wales, whichmost people would be familiar with. And
then to the north of Sydney upon the North coast or just off the
north coast. Kempsey's close to thecoastline. That where that red dropper is,
and it's below the Gold Coast andbelow Brisbane. So that's that's the
area of Australia that we're that we'refocusing on today. So you've got a

(05:31):
bit of a bit of an ideageographically where that is. Now. I'm
in the Argus on Thursday April eight, nineteen seventy one. April is an
important month when it comes to UFOsbecause that was the month that the Westall
sixty six school yard encounter occurred andthe Burke's flat bending headlights encounter, which

(05:54):
I've spoken about on this show before. They are not in the same year,
but in the same month April. So April pops up quite often,
as does October as well. Youknow, they can appear at any time,
but there months in Australia where there'sbeen a lot of reported UFO activity.

(06:14):
So on Thursday, April eighth, nine seventy one, in the Argus
newspaper they reported that a man atgreen Hill, which is a little area
just out of Kempsey to the west, a man a man at green Hill
claimed on Friday night that he'd beensucked or drawn through a window pane in

(06:35):
the kitchen of his home. That'sright, sucked or drawn through a window
pane, And that got my attentionstraight away. It was the first thing
I read I when I look atthis article, and I thought, wow,
that's an incredible story. The manwas aged thirty four and he fell
seven feet to the ground outside hishome, but was unhurt except for minor

(06:58):
cuts on one hand an arm.The terrified man had told his wife that
he saw a strange, small saucershaped face at the window and that he
was drawn out through the glass bysome unknown force. And his wife was
who was aged twenty six, saidthat she heard breaking glass in the kitchen

(07:23):
sometime after ten pm. She justthought that her husband had broken crockery in
glass and was drying it and wasdying that was drying on the sea.
So she ran outside and she sawthat his legs and his hips were disappearing
horizontally through the top half of thewindow of the bottom window. And there

(07:44):
are some photos of this which I'llshow you. And the incident came a
few hours after a number of Kempsypeople just a bit down the road reported
a strange bright light in the westKempsy sky between six ten pm and six
thirty. Now, the man whowent through the window, whose name was
not being published so I don't knowwho he is either to protect him from

(08:07):
unwanted publicity. He was an Aboriginalman and he vows that he will not
live in the house again. Andhe is now in Sydney and wants his
wife to go there with him,but she says she cannot because of the
children. And she'd prefer to stayin the house, but there's nowhere else
for her to live. And shesaid, I don't like it. I
sleep with the blankets over my head. I guess I am scared too.

(08:31):
And the woman said that her husbandhe had been drinking earlier in the evening,
but he was not drunk at all, so he wasn't like he was
drunk, but he had been drinkingearlier in the evening. And she said,
we came home from the neighbors atabout ten o'clock after watching television.
My husband went to bed and wasplaying with the baby. He got up

(08:52):
and went to the kitchen to havea drink of water, but he didn't
turn on the light, and afterwardssaid he tipped his head back towards the
sink and saw the little face pressedup against the window. So it had
no hair, and it looked likea small saucer it had It looked like
a small, small saucer, andit had features, but he could not

(09:15):
describe them. So I just imaginethis little face sort of pressed up against
the glass. And he doesn't remembermuch about going through the window, but
says that he was sucked out bysome force. Was sucking him out through
the window, and he fell outat the bottom of the steps on his
back, and his wife ran outsideand thought he would be stunned, but

(09:37):
he wasn't, and he wasn't evenwinded. He jumped up and he ran
like hell down to the gravel,a pile down near the house, pile
of dirt, and she said sheran after him, and he was crying
and shaking, and she thought thathe had the horrors, and she told

(09:58):
him so that he you've got thehorrors. And she went back to the
house and asked him not to asknot to leave, and he was so
frightened. The woman said that shehad gone to the hospital with her husband,
where a stitch was inserted in acut to the finger on his right
hand, and she had to leavehim there to go home to the children.

(10:20):
And she believes that her husband mayhave become unruly because the police were
called and later they took him tothe lockup where he ended up spending the
night. And his wife said thathe had told her several times, you
think I'm mad, I'm not.I saw something. You think I'm mad,
I'm not. I saw something. And she said, I know that

(10:45):
he's not superstitious, and that hedoesn't believe in ghosts or men from space,
but he does now. So anArgush reporter went to the home and
came away puzzled by the bizarre incident. The man, who was about five
ft three inches tall and weighing abouteight and a half stone, was standing
at a sink about eighteen inches wide, and his wife insists that he was

(11:11):
in a horizontal position going through thewindow, and that he was not struggling
or thrashing at all, just goingthrough like that, straight out the window.
The pane of glass he went throughis four ft six inches from the
ground. His leap, which shatteredthe glass but did not break the frame,
would be impossible from a standing position, and you'll see that when I

(11:31):
show you the photo. He wentthrough a glass plane thirty two inches wide
and ten inches deep, touched nothingon the sink in front of him,
and tumbled seven ft two inches tothe bottom of the back steps. He
was not hurt in the fall, and he now had sawn and sorry had
said that the air had sawn usthat night. All the next day he

(11:54):
did not put the light on inthe kitchen, and no light was being
reflected from the bedroom door. Thestreet light outside is strip lighting. The
moon that night was in the firstquarter. There was also a light cover
of cloud. That's an extraordinary event, absolutely extraordinary. Now, mister Arnold
Nelson of Taylor Street saw a reddishlight over the McClay River and he was

(12:18):
on the veranda fairwelling his sister inlaw, missus Cyril Admonson Adamson Sorry,
and they watched the light descend slowlyinto the McClay River between the West Kempsey
Reservoir and the hospital. Mister Nelsonsaid the light was very low and appeared
about four feet in diameter. Hesaw a smoke trail following the descent.

(12:41):
So let's have a look at thephotos. I'll just go back to there.
So this is where Green Hill is. This is an incredible story.
So Kempsey is obviously in the middleof that. So the McClay River winds
through the countryside there and if youlook towards the left of screen, to
the left upper side there you cansee Green Hill. So it's just a

(13:05):
little satellite place. And I wentlooking to find the house and it's hard
to pinpoint. I think I thoughtI found it that there's incredibly old photos
with very little information in the pictures, and it was actually the stumps of
the house that gave me the bestpossibility. But I wasn't confident enough to

(13:28):
bring the house forward as being thatthis is the house. I didn't include
it in the photos, but itcould have been the house. So this
is the window. So there's thephoto of his wife pointing at the window.
And as you'll notice, the windowactually has a centerpiece of timber that
runs through it where her finger isactually sitting at that point, and the

(13:50):
glass is broken there, so youcould not you could not leap through that
window. It's not a window thatyou could just jump up feet for and
put yourself through that window, andcertainly without breaking that that actual centerpiece of
wood that runs through. And asyou'll see there in that photo, one

(14:11):
of the clues was the trees inthe background. So I look for everything
when I'm looking looking to try andfind the location, and even with my
skills, I still wasn't able toexactly pinpoint which house this occurreding, But
that shows her pointing at the placein the window. Now, this next
picture from the Argus shows the descentwhere he fell, So he's gone through

(14:37):
that bottom pane there with that centerpieceof timber, and he's landed on the
steps below with nothing other than afew scratches. So that's incredible, and
I thought maybe those stumps might helpme find the house. A long time.
Houses change plenty over fifty years,so it's wouldn't confidently say that I've

(15:01):
found the house, but it isonly a small place. There wouldn't be
any more than thirty houses there,so that is on its side, That
is on the side of someone tryingto track this track this place down.
So that's an incredible story that aman who has got no interest in UFOs
whatsoever goes to the kitchen sink andhe sees a strange face at that window.

(15:24):
Now that face was either hovering atthe window or it was an incredibly
tall being standing on those steps lookingin through the window. So seven foot
drop to the ground, So that'skind of probably an average bigfoot height from
the window to the ground. Certainly, I couldn't imagine myself going through that

(15:46):
window. I'm not hurting myself fairlyextensively being cut to pieces and then bruised
and battered and not being able toget up when you're landed on that step.
But this gentleman sprung right up,a couple of a few cuts on
his hands and the greatest fright ofhis life. So it's interesting, isn't
it. And the other thing Ialso want to note too, and this

(16:07):
happens so often with UFO and camerasin Australia, is that water is involved.
You know, there's a there's ariver. The river is a central
part to the story in some waysbecause it's like a big snake that snakes
its way through the area, andUFOs have always been attracted attracted to water.

(16:30):
So yeah, it's really really avery fascinating tale. At about and
the article continues on and they said, at about six ten pm on Friday,
missus Na Murray of Gabriel Avenue, her son, David, daughter,
a daughter, and nephew Rick Cooksaw a bright light reddish in color with

(16:52):
purple overtones, in the northwest sky. It was traveling low and its brightness
fluctuated like a twinkling star. Andmissus Murray said her son watched the light
through the binoculars and you saw asmoke trail behind it. They then saw
the light descend and they described itas a controlled and deliberate descent somewhere near

(17:14):
the hospital. It then disappeared. At first they believed the light to be
coming from a helicopter landing, butdisregarded this because the light was too bright
and way too big. So thatalso, and when you sort of go,
well, that's a crazy story thatthe gentleman going through the window.
And if it was just that storyalone, you could go, well,

(17:37):
you know, maybe it is,maybe it's maybe it's a beat up,
maybe maybe it didn't actually happen. But in the context of this kempsy flap,
and this is probably going to taketwo episodes to get through this,
this particular story, it certainly addsa lot more weight to the possibility that
this strange event in fact did akurd So and as you can see,

(18:03):
the newspaper is simply reporting the events, and they didn't give it some kind
of spectacular spin. They didn't havea splashed headline that says man sucked out
window, you know it. Itwasn't done in that National Inquirer kind of
a way. They're just simply openmindedly taken down the information and reported it

(18:25):
to the people in the local area. So that's interesting and the fun and
games continue. So on Thursday,April fifteenth, nineteen seventy one, The
Argus had another article on strange happeningsin the district and the puzzle of a

(18:47):
strange bright light seen over Kempsey onFriday evening April second deepened yesterday when a
woman reported the light at a parachuteattached to it. Missus ales A Somerville
of forty five Short Street, Kempsey. Now, back in those days they
used to publish people's addresses. Canyou imagine that now? But back in

(19:08):
the seventies it was quite frequent thatthey would publish someone's actual address, normally
just the street. But as you'llsee here the Argus, we're not afraid
to put down your house number aswell into the local paper. So missus
Somerville of forty five Short Street,Kempsey saw the light disappear outside her window
and watched it for several seconds beforeit disappeared. The light had appeared somewhere

(19:33):
around six pm and she described itas many others have described it as a
brilliant pink light with lighter tonings onthe outer part of the sphere, and
she said, I first noticed itpassing the window of my house, which
is very close to the McClay Riverand overlooks it. I followed it from
window to window, and I wasamazed at the brilliance of the color.

(19:59):
The It was no more than aboutfifty to sixty feet from the house and
about forty feet from the ground,so I call that four bigfoots tall.
The light was so intense that Icould see the outline of a parachute.
It seemed to be attached to thisglowing ball by cords or some other material.

(20:21):
These were very distinct. The lightglided smoothly past the house and seemed
to go towards the trees. Ikept watching it until it went out of
sight. No, I wasn't frightened, just fascinated by the brilliant color.
Missus Somerville said. She mentioned theincident to her husband, Mister Darryl Somerville,

(20:41):
secretary of the McClay River Cooperative DairyCompany Limited, and he had made
a search of the river bank andundergrowth near the spot the light disappeared,
but could find who could not findanything, And yesterday a taxi driver who
prefers not to be named, saidthat about the same time on the same
night, he a glowing ball tothe southwest of Kempsey while driving along the

(21:03):
fed the Fredericton Strait, and you'llsee all these little places as I put
the maps up. You said therewere three passages in the car and we
had it under observation for about fiveminutes. It seemed to be a rusty
orange color like a sunset. Wethought it was an aircraft. But the
light went over the aerodrome and traveledtowards Green Hill. So Green Hill is

(21:27):
where the man was sucked out thewindow. It disappeared at Green Hill and
we knew it was Green Hill becausewe could see the lights there. Dozens
of people have reported seeing the lightssince the report appeared in The Argus last
Thursday. The first to maker reportwas Missus in a Murray of Gabriel Avenue

(21:47):
and she said the light appeared tobe traveling under control, made a deliberate
descent, and she spoke of asmoky trial was also seen coming from the
light, and a mister Ald ofTaylor Street, South Kempsey saw that.
Missus Somerville described the smoke as whispyand a few hours later this or how

(22:07):
the article continues. On the sameday, an Aboriginal man claimed that he
was sucked out that window. Sothat's very contextual, isn't it, when
you've got you know, these thesetype of things happening. So let's have
a look here, so that showsyou again the Kempsie out in the direction

(22:33):
of the Kempsi Airport where the littlered dropper is out here. And this
is Taylor Street, this one. This is where the woman who who features
in the article at the start, her house is down in this area here
down where that tree band is thereand the McClay river goes past, and

(22:53):
her husband searched along through those treesthere at the bottom of that. So
that's very interesting. And the otherstreet location here being Taylor Street down here,
so people can obviously there's must berelatively decent views around the river here

(23:15):
for people to see when they're looking. So very interesting. So very busy
times. Now moving forward again.Saturday, April seventeenth, nineteen seventy one,
The Argus has another article about UFOsStrange things in the district and the

(23:40):
title of it is is that eyewitnessestalk of ball of fire and the puzzle
of the bright light took another twistyesterday when a Southwest Rocks Residence resident reported
sighting a ball of fire on thenight of March twenty fifth. So people
are coming forward with other sightings andthey just keep on they keep on coming,
and there's other strange stuff that we'regoing to really enjoy hearing about.

(24:04):
And missus and back in those days, they always pronounced women as the husband's
name. They'd never just say thatit was that it was a Valerie Smith.
That'd say it was it was MissusPeter Smith. So that's how they
and that's how they wrote back inthe early seventies. So this woman's described
as Missus A Laws and so herhusband's probably Arthur or Andrew, and her

(24:25):
name doesn't actually come up, whichis a which it's always hard to track
people down. And again this isover fifty years ago, so you know,
people, I haven't gone to thetrouble or trying to track down witnesses
because I thought a lot of thesepeople are probably dead in nursing homes,
you know, or not not possibleto find. And there's just enough material
here just to go through. SoMissus A Laws, who lived in Arthur

(24:49):
Street, said that she had beenreluctant to say anything earlier. Now Southwest
Rocks is more towards the coast. It's a little bit outside of Kemsey,
but it's in the same area.So she'd been reluctant to say anything earlier
because people would have thought that shewas mad, or so she thought.
And she said that she had beenawakened at about ten pm on Thursday,
March twenty five to find her roomit illuminated by a bright, burnt orange

(25:15):
colored light. She said, mybedroom overlooks the bowling Club and the Raccoon
National Park and the old jail. She got out of bed, pulled back
the blinds and saw a huge brightlight. There was eight or ten feet
in diameter near the bowling club. She said that she thought the club was

(25:37):
on fire, that's how I readit was. And then she saw that
this was a great ball of light, and she described it as a beautiful
sunset. I thought it might havebeen a flare from a ship in distress,
or that I was having a nightmare. And then I saw the light
come down slowly to earth and disappearbehind the bowling club. I didn't see
it again, and missus Law saidher younger son, Doug, had come

(26:00):
home from work between ten and tenthirty pm and had awakened his brother fearing
someone someone was in trouble at sea, and he had gone to the pilot
and reported the incident, and hehad been assured that no one would be
using a flare such as the onehe saw, and Missus Laws said,
I watched this beautiful light for fivemaybe ten minutes, and I've never seen

(26:23):
anything like it before. There wasanother report of a strange light seen over
Kempsey on Friday, the second ofApril. Missus Dulcie Rossiter, who lived
near Green Hill where the man wassucked out the window, said that between
six pm and six ten pm shesaw a huge, bright light moving towards

(26:45):
Kempsey from the direction of the dollwas hard to pronounced doll Connie Mountain near
Crescent Head and you can tell himnot a local to the area, she
said. When I first saw it, I thought it was an airplane,
but the light was too bright. It was a deep orange in color,
and then it turned to red asit drew closer. Missus ross has said

(27:07):
that the light was under view forfive to ten minutes. She'd put binoculars
onto it and saw it was trailingsmoke. And she said the light appeared
to go between some trees on theriver bank between the town reservoir and the
hospital. As it disappeared from view, I could see the trail of smoke.
So I've just got to show youanother picture that I forgot to show

(27:30):
you earlier, and this is awitness illustration. Where are we here we
go? So this is what wasreported down near the river. So that
was that bright light like that,And this was in the Argus newspaper.
And the reason these pictures look cloudyis because they've actually been glued onto paper
with the old fashioned clag. Sothat's why all these pictures look a little

(27:52):
bit cloudy looking, and obviously theage of them as well. So that's
the impression that the witness, thatthe witnesses, that the witness had that
that was what it actually so theycan only talk about it in relation to
the to the times of when theyactually saw it, so you know,
that's that's the way it is.And so this is where the lady was.

(28:18):
So she was in Arthur Street hereand that's that where that purple line
is and you can see it's onlythese are only small areas. There's a
lovely golf course off to the righthand side, and it's surrounded by National
Park out there and along the coast. And this is sort of the high
version so of Southwest Rocks. Sothe house is here, the Bowls Club,

(28:40):
and this isn't the viewing of thedirection where that white line runs through
the image there shows where the lightwas seen out over the Bowls Club and
the Coon National Park area. Soand this one shows you how far away
it is from Kempsey. So downthe bottom right it says Crescent Head look

(29:02):
Out and Crescent Head just off tothe left there, and then I put
a little measuring mark there to showyou that distance about I think it's twelve
kilometers or so, maybe thirteen fourteenk from Kempsey across to the Crescent Head
area. So that gives you abit of an idea that all of these

(29:22):
sightings are occurring in a very verylocalized area. And so the top right
picture there, so it shows SouthwestRocks and a Raccoon National Park, so
right on the top of that bendin the top right hand side of the
picture. So that gives you apretty good idea of that location. There

(29:47):
we go and it just continues. So on Tuesday, April twentieth, nineteen
seventy one, the Argus again reports. The headline is circles burnt in grass
paddocks. Now a Christmas Creek residenttold the Argus on Saturday afternoon that he

(30:10):
had found in his fields two circularpatches of grass that had been scorched as
if by an iron. Now thegentleman's name was mister Brian Yarnold of Christmas
Creek, said that he had notmade that He had not made no of
his finding because people would not havebelieved that anyway. That's me quoting him.

(30:33):
And he was prompted by reports ofsightings of UFOs over Kempsey in recent
weeks, and the Arnold family recalledto a reporter several sightings of strange lights,
the most recent being the Easter Saturdaynight. Mister Yarnold said that he
had found a month ago a scorchedarea of grass in his long corner paddock

(30:53):
that was some twenty feet in diameter, and he said, I noticed it
because it was round. I tookanother look at it because there appeared to
be no reason for it. Tobe there, no reason for that mark
to be there. It appeared asif something had been standing there. Since

(31:15):
then, the patch of hibberd grasshad recovered and is now growing well.
At the prompting of his wife, mister Yarnold also recalled that a burnt patch
about ten feet in diameter had beenfound last year in a paddock about two
hundred yards from the homestead. MissusYarnold said the patch appeared overnight, and

(31:37):
she said there was nothing there theday before, but the next morning there
was this patch, about three quartersof it, looking as if it had
been scorched by something hot. TheYarnolds went to the property last May since
their fourteen year old daughter Sue,had drawn the family's attention to a number
of strange lights at night. AndSue was a second form student of Kempsey

(31:59):
High School and an amateur astronomer,And she was adamant that the lights are
not meteors, flares, weather balloons, satellites, firework, swamp gas,
or any of your other Monday inexplanations, And Sue said, on Easter
Saturday night, at about ten pm, I saw a reddish purple light in
the north traveling from the south Itwas bigger than a full moon, but

(32:22):
hazy, even though the night wasclear, and she said I had it
in view for about ten minutes andwatched it gradually descend on the northwest until
it disappeared behind trees. And Suesaid that she had seen a number of
unexplained lights in the sky in thepast eleven months, and about last July

(32:45):
there was also a series of lightsover Bellbrook, which is in that area.
The lights were reddish and had agreen tinge. They seemed to be
traveling west at a fairly fast rate. She saw them on several successive nights,
successive nights, and once there weretwo traveling together. She said,

(33:06):
the strange thing is is that there'snever any noise. You can hear aircraft
for miles at night, but there'snever any sound with these lights. And
her mother related how she and thewhole family had seen a strange light come
from over Kempsey from the north anddisappeared to the southwest while they were living

(33:27):
in Douglas Fenterman Street a year ago, and the mother said the light was
red, then blue, and hada halo of white and kept changing color
all the time. We saw itat about eight pm over the river near
Short Street. It was rocking fromside to side, and then quite suddenly

(33:47):
it disappeared. And around the sametime, mister Yarnold sighted on the Glen
Rock Flat a blue light that spedfrom Fredericton towards Crescent Head at a credible
rate. He said, it wasa brilliant blue light and it was gone
in a flash. And since theArgus published a story about a reddish purple

(34:08):
light seen on the evening of Aprilsecond, number of people have confirmed the
sighting. So that's interesting. Sowe'll just have a little look at that
area. So this is so Bellbrookis right up there in the top corner

(34:30):
where that red line runs. Bellbrookis up there, and the column Batty
if you look down a little bitfurther to the without green writing is Column
Batty is another area that focuses inthese stories. Also coming up. So
so bell Brook to Ruka and downto the stream left to see Willie.

(34:51):
There's a place called Willie Willie. So this is this triangular area out there
from bell Brook to Ruka Willy Willyacross to column Batty. There's a absolute
UFO highway during this period of timeand column Batty is there's literally nothing there.
And this is the problem with evenwith newspaper articles, is that it's

(35:15):
very hard to track information down sometimesand even when even if the articles at
first appear to give you good information, you just struggle sometimes to translate that
information into usable from an investigators pointof view. So without local knowledge,
sometime it's very very hard when theytalk about such and such flat or such

(35:37):
and such straight that's local knowledge, and I can sit here and type it
into Google Maps, bang bang bangbang bang, and that that information doesn't
come up. So that's where youneed to go out to the locations on
the ground, talk to the localsand find out where some of these locations
actually are. So you know,it's it's always challenging, but you but

(35:58):
I always do my best from thearmchair with Google Maps to try and find
as much information as I can withany of these stories or any of these
encounters. So just excuse me whileI have a little little drink. This
is one hell of a busy newspaperbecause on Saturday, April twenty fourth,

(36:22):
nineteen seventy one, so from thestart of April now we're up to the
twenty fourth of April nineteen seventy one, The Argus reports the local KEMPSI Argus
reports this is the headline, threeboys see unidentified object overhead. Three schoolboys
aged thirteen, eleven and nine yesterdaymorning cited a silvery object trailing flames,

(36:49):
descending over Column Batty rail from agreat height and disappear behind a hill to
the southwest. Now I'll just pausethere for a minute because that's what confused
me, because there's Column Batty andthen they say in Columbatty Rail, and
I thought, that's got to bea train station. There's got to be
a train station Colmbtty Rail. There'sgot to be a train station, Okay,

(37:10):
But when you go there and look, there's really nothing there. And
I did a little bit of researchand there was a railway line that there
was a railway in that area thator a station there until nine seventy four.
But Columbatti Rail is actually another place, so I've discovered that as well.
So you just never can be quitesure on face value of what information

(37:31):
means. So I took it asbeing the railway station, but it's actually
a place called Columbatty Rail. Sothat was interesting. And they're all the
fun things that you discovers as youinvestigate. So these three school boys saw
this silvery object trailing flames, descendingover Columbatty Rail from a great height and
disappear behind a hill to the southwest. The boys were all shaken by their

(37:55):
experience, and they told their schoolteacher and mister Brian Moss, and later
an Argus reporter that the object beganto drop four legs as it swung low
over their heads and banked away asif to land. Peter Fuller thirteen,

(38:15):
his brother Christopher nine, and RonaldDonnelly eleven saw the object about eight thirty
am as they waited for the columnBatty Rail post office to open. That
was all a bit confusing for meas well. And this story came within
minutes of a report from a missusFaye Booney of Temagogue that she had seen

(38:37):
on Thursday between ten thirty and elevenPM a dazzling ball of light suspended from
some object. She had watched itland and later move away. It also
follows reports from two fishermen of oddlights and silvery objects seen in the last
fortnight off Crescent Head Waters, andthe schoolboys cannot be shaken from their story
that they saw a bright, silverydescended incredible speed yesterday from the eastern skyline.

(39:05):
Christopher Fooler said that he had beensitting on the side of a colvert
near the post office when high inthe sky he saw an object which seemed
to be enveloped or enveloped, perhapsin flames. He said, I was
looking up in the sky and sawthis little dot get bigger and bigger.
It seemed to be a ball offire, and he said it. He

(39:27):
said, he ran to his brotherand Ronald, standing about ten to fifteen
feet away, and pointed at theobject, pointed the object out to them,
and by this time the object haddropped through the atmosphere at such a
rate that it was now almost overhead. All boys said there was no sound
whatsoever as the object came into viewand passed overhead. The elder boy,

(39:50):
Peter said, I saw it comingdown fast as a jet from the east.
It came down steeply at first, and then started to lose speed.
We saw legs starting to come out, and there were four legs, and
they had pads on the bottom. This is a little leaven near old Boy's
description. The fire at the backgot less. The thing I saw was

(40:10):
silvery and shaped a bit like anegg. There were big square windows all
around the sides and went and thesides went out through the bottom. Peter
said he could not see the topof the object. He said it came
down and seemed to be about twoto three hundred feet above them, and
we could see the windows very clearly. Then this thing started to wobble and

(40:35):
it banked like an aircraft, andthe legs were coming down. It disappeared
over the other side of the railwayand went down into the gully. Peter
said that they had been very frightenedby the experience. He said, I
sat down next to the colvid towatch the thing go over. I was
so scared it nearly fell into thewater. Oh so he nearly fell into

(40:58):
There must have been something near waterby. And all the boys said the object
they saw bore no resemblance to comicbook flying sources. Peter said, this
one was different. We were scared. I don't even want to see another
one again. And their teacher, mister Moss, separated the boys and as
soon as they told him their experience, and he asked them to draw what

(41:21):
they had seen and all the illustrations. One will show an elliptical object with
windows around the bottom. The threedrawings show exhaust flames, but one drawn
by Christopher, the first boy tocite the object, is surrounded by flames.
Interesting how people draw different things andunsuccessful searches were made of the column

(41:42):
Batty area in an effort to findevidence that the object had landed. Mister
Moss said that the directions given bythe children, the object could have come
down near mister Peter Yarnold's property. That's a name we've heard before at Christmas
Creek Column Batty and last week misterYarnold and his family reported that burnt circular
patches of grass on their property. So and on the Thursday night, Missus

(42:06):
fay Bonner of Temagogue cited an unusualobject in the sky ten thirty and eleven.
She told the Argus yesterday that shehad been awoken by her dogs,
which had begun barking as if disturbed, and she said they were barking furiously.
I got up and quietened them down, and then I looked up and
saw this brilliant orange light traveling ina north westerly direction. It was huge

(42:30):
and it seemed attached to something thatlooked like a parachute or an object that
shaped. It was hanging from something. It was seen coming down slowly,
and I watched it for at leastfive minutes. I woke my husband up,
but he rolled over and went backto sleep again. That's so classic,
isn't it. I watched the lightagain and it appeared to be coming

(42:51):
into land Missus Leslie Allen's property. It came down slowly and lit up everything
around it. Then it went behindsome trees. I could see half the
light above the trees and an illuminationthrough the trees. Everything was black and
there was complete blackness. Missus Bonnersaid she went back to her bed,

(43:12):
but throughout the rest of the nightkept getting up to see if the light
reappeared. Yesterday morning, she couldonly guess at the area where did he
come down? And she said,I had no landmark. I thought it
had come down about two or threeor four miles away, but it could
have been fifteen miles away when youconsider the distortions that occur at night.
And there was no sound. Itwas totally quiet. So let's have a

(43:37):
look at the boys. So thiswas in the newspaper at the time.
So there are the boys that wasthem back at that time, the three
boys who reported that incident. AndI'm sure as they said themselves, they
were they were terrified by this thingthat seemed to come screaming out of the
sky, dropped landing legs and bankedoff to an undisclosed location. And this

(44:04):
is a picture. This is actuallya composite picture I think drawn by the
Argus who took the boys pictures anddrew alike. This is what they had
seen. So this disilvery object andas you can see, it's got lights
around the window and these classic landinglegs coming down with the big with the
big footpads, and they must havebeen relatively big footpads. So there's a

(44:31):
lot going on here, isn't therein this little area Kempsey. Unbelievable.
Saturday, April the twenty fourth, nineteen seventy one, the Argus reports fishermen
see object near Crescent Head. Twofishermen told about seeing strange lights off Crescent

(44:54):
Head Beach and hearing noises offshore thatsounded like all being crushed. Only ten
times louder mister Ian Farrewell of YarravilleStreet. Kensey and mister Jack Casey admitted
freely that what they had seen andheard had frightened them so much they left

(45:17):
the beach hurriedly and went home. For mister Casey, the experience was the
second experience and almost identical he wasto have in a week. On Easter
Saturday night, at nine to fortyfive, fishing in the same exact same
spot, he saw lights and hearda noise out to sea. They could
not be explained. Last Saturday nightfishing with mister Farrewell, there had been

(45:43):
strange lights seawood and a sound anda loud grounding noise at exactly the same
time, or grinding noise. MisterFarrewell said that they had left their car
at McGuire's crossing and had walked twomiles south to begin their fishing when they
saw a light in the sky.I mean walking two miles down a beach.

(46:05):
It's hard, you know, that'swalking on a beach. You can
double the distance from an exercise, but it's like four miles in terms of
walking. But they actually parked theircar and walked two miles down the beach
with their fishing rods. When theysaw the light, and mister Farrewell said,
we were just baiting our hooks whenI looked up and saw a large,
dull red light in the sky.It seemed to change color to an

(46:28):
orange shade and was twice the sizeof the moon. Directly above the light
was out in the shipping lane andlow above the water. It moved slightly
to the left and then slightly tothe right. Mister Casey said that he
had looked up that when he lookedup, the light had turned to a
blue white color and become smaller andsmaller until it disappeared, and he said

(46:52):
we watched it for about three orfour minutes. The strange thing is that
while the light was in the view, there was no reflection on the water
at all. Both men said thatwhen the light went out they heard a
terrible noise. It seemed like amotor noise, like a gravel crusher at
work, only ten times louder thanthe sound of gravel crushing. And if

(47:15):
you've ever heard gravel crushing, thatis a loud noise. Think of that
ten times louder. As the menwalked back over the sandhills to their car,
they saw what seemed to be acloud out to sea, and mister
Farrowell said, I was sure itwas a cloud, but then I saw
a dull, silver disc shaped objectover the sea where the light had been.

(47:36):
We could still hear the noise, even though the sea was rough.
The noise could be heard when wegot back to the car and drove away.
And mister Casey said that on EasterSaturday night he had been fishing in
the same place when he saw threelights moving along the shipping lane. I
was alone, and it was aboutnine forty five pm. I saw three

(47:59):
red lights which seemed to have blewthrough them, coming along the coast from
Point Plumber. It seems at thetime the lights could have been flames from
an exhaust. They moved quickly acrossthe sky towards hat Head and appeared to
be joined together. It only tookabout five minutes for the lights to pass
across the sky from Plumber to hatHead. So that's a point of land.

(48:24):
Can you call it a headland?I suppose. Then the first light
went out and the second and thirdstayed in view. There was a terrific
noise and all the lights came on. They started to move towards McGuire's crossing
and seemed to pass between me downthe beach and the car. I went

(48:45):
back to the car and I left. There were two other people on the
beach at the time, and theysaw the lights and arrived back at their
car at the same time I did. The noise at sea could still be
heard as he drove off. MisterCasey said he would be going back to
the crossing tonight with some friends andnight glasses to try and unravel the mystery.

(49:07):
So that's very very interesting. Nowhere we go. We've got a
picture here, So that's the CrescentHead area and if you look up from
the Crescent Head lookout and that beachand that beauty Astralia has got beautiful beaches.

(49:27):
And as a beach stretches up tothe north, you see Killick Beach
and where it says Bellmore River, that's the area of the sighting. And
so this here is the road McGuire'scrossing, So that's where they that's where
they actually were on this beach areahere, so where that purple line is

(49:49):
and they walk down two miles southalong that stretch of beach. So this
is where the fisherman was standing that'swhere they saw the saw the object and
heard the strange and very loud bythe sounds of it crushing sound. So
obviously everybody was very perturbed by allthese strange occurrences that were happening. So

(50:17):
on Tuesday, April twenty fourth, nineteen seventy one, the Argus again reports
that teacher cites gray object in thesky. A Kempsie school teacher on Saturday
reported citing an object in the skyabout the same time on Friday that a
similar sighting was made at Columbatti railby the boys missus Jill French of thirty

(50:43):
eight in the street therego. They'rereporting the reporting the exact witness address.
She said she was driving down cStreet at about eight thirty am when she
saw an object cross the sky froman easterly direct and traveling southwest. At
the time, she was driving alongthe crest of the hill outside Kempsey Showground.

(51:07):
She said, I saw this gorgeouslight going across the sky. At
first I thought it was a kitewith a long tail, but then I
realized that that was not so.The light was brilliant and it trailed behind
a very long cigar shaped object. The light was fiery and orange red ball

(51:28):
of fire, and it also showedwhite and it was stunning. Missus French
said the object did not appear tobe traveling very fast when it came into
her sight. It appeared to beclose to the ground and seemed to bank
as it passed to the southeast behindthe PMG towers in Elbow Street. Elbow

(51:49):
Street. So, of course, being a great Google fan, Google Maps
fan, I had to go andfind the house, didn't I. So
that was where she was living atthe time. That's the property, and
I also tracked down the location whereshe was driving. So C Street runs

(52:12):
from the top left right through thealmost the center of that picture, and
off to the left of C Streetthere is the Kempsey Showground. Now,
from my understanding, Kempsey that areais a fairly hilly sort of an area,
and this was where she would haveseen it because she described it as
seeing it at the top of thehill where the showgrounds were. And as
you can see, C Street thereobviously banks down and goes down a hill.

(52:36):
The road extends down a hill andthe showground is off to the left,
So that's the area where she hadactually actually seen it. So,
and it just continues. Thursday,April twenty ninth, nineteen seventy one more
lights. See The mystery of strangelights in McClay Skies continues to grow with

(53:02):
each new sighting. Five more reportshave been received, two confirming the sightings
of a silvery gray object in thesky at eight thirty on Friday, and
three reported fresh sightings. Four teenagerssaid this week they had seen a large
red glowing light near Warwick Park Racecourseon April twentieth. The light had appeared

(53:23):
to be about tree level and wasmoving very fast in a northerly direction towards
Column Batty. Frederickson Fredericton and theteenagers declined to be named. They said
the light appeared to be about afoot in diameter, and they followed it
by car along North Street and downdown Second Street to the Pacific Highway.

(53:46):
One of them said the light wasall this time traveling in a direct line
towards Columnbatty. When it was directlyover Columbatty, it was joined by three
smaller lights which came from nowhere. The smaller lights then started traveling north at
the same speed as the larger light. The teenagers said they watched for about

(54:07):
five or ten minutes before the lightsdisappeared. All of them thought at first
the lights might have been warning lightson the Smithton Radio Smithtown Sorry Radio Tower.
However, the light was always ontheir right as they chased it.
At all times. It was lowin the sky, and a mister Clarie

(54:28):
Briggs of Smithtown said he had seena pulsating light in the eastern sky at
about seven fifteen pm on Saturday. The light tended to glow and changed color
constantly, and he said I watchedit with my family for about twenty minutes.
Then it began to move up anddown and occasionally sideways. It began
to fade and disappeared. Eventually itreappeared and every fifteen seconds changed color from

(54:52):
red to green, then blue andso on. On Sunday night, mister
Briggs said he had seen a similarlight above the about the same time over
the column Buddy Fredericton area, movingup and down and sideways. It was
not a star. A young womansaid she and three others watching from the
West Street from West Street had seena light north of Kempsey on Tuesday night

(55:15):
and which was reddish color and appearedsurrounded by smoke. The light had moved
sideways and up and down and thenmoved in a southwest direction, and they'd
been scared, they'd gone that theyhad gone straight home. Mister Max Marvin
of South Kempsey and Miss Jean Piggottof West Kempsey both confirmed the sighting of

(55:36):
a silvery gray object trailing fire ora bright light reported above the McClay area
eight thirty last Friday. Mister Marvinsaid that he had seen the object flash
across the sky from east to thesouthwest, and he described the light as
brilliant, like an oxy torch.Their head appeared to be red hot,
and Miss Piggott said that she hadbeen traveling to work at Nestley's in which

(55:57):
Nestles a chocolate factory in Smithtown andit's seen a brilliant white light, white
and pink light across the sky whiledriving down the Smithtown road. So that's
what they had described. So justquickly, just to give you a bit
of an idea. So that's theSmithtown location. Is that red area at

(56:17):
the top right hand side, andif you look down the bottom corner,
Kempsy is down to the bottom leftof that of that page. Sorry of
that map. And then here we'vealso got the show this one, so
that's what Smithton actually, Smithtown actuallylooks like. And the Smithtown Road snakes
along the McLay River just off tothe rising to the left hand top page

(56:42):
there. So we have run outof time for this episode. And I
said, there was so much tounpack with the Kempsy Encounters of nineteen seventy
one, nine and seventy two.It really is a dream flat with so
much going on. And we've seenalready in this episode a lot of a
lot of activity. So next weekwe shall pick up the stories again and

(57:07):
we shall continue. So until then, I really hope you've enjoyed this episode,
have a fantastic evening, and Iwill see you again next episode.
