Oggi fa parte dell’Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) ed è un ente di ricerca d’eccellenza riconosciuto a livello mondiale.
Fin dalla sua fondazione, intorno al 1760, mantiene la sede in palazzo Brera.
Ospita il Museo Astronomico di Brera e la cupola Schiaparelli.
Per accompagnare pubblico e scuole alla scoperta dell'universo l’osservatorio
ha sviluppato e offre un ricco programma di attività culturali.
