Ida Nicolaisens arbejdshjerte ligger i Borneo, som hun snart skal tilbage til. Hun er antropolog, og hendes forskningsfelter har været Haddad-folket i Tchad, tuaregerne i Niger og Punan Bah-folket i det centrale Borneo. Arbejdet med oprindelige folk har bragt hende rundt i verden på feltarbejde, og hun har haft centrale poster i blandt andet FN og Danida. Yderligere har hun stået for det store værk om dansk nomadeforskning.
