Hun doodstraf is omgezet in levenslange dwangarbeid in de strafkampen van de "Zaligheidseilanden", die Eugène al snel zal omdopen tot "Duivelseilanden". Maar nu bevinden ze zich nog in het voorgeborgte van de hel, in het "depot van dwangarbeiders" op het eiland Saint-Martin-de-Ré.
