(00:46):
you know my story back in twenty twenty one is
when I was in treatment for two months, I struggled
in silence for nine years. I struggled with depression, anxiety,
addiction and PTSD due to medical trauma. And when I
was in treatment for two months, I was writing my music,
but you know, at the time, I didn't know it
was my music. And when I left, I shared my
(01:07):
music to the public. And then I also had a
passion for mental health awareness and wellness where I would
speak to schools, churches, organizations and letting them know that
there is hope on the other side. I'm currently in
a certification program to be a health practitioner where I
can truly dive deep to help people to overcome stress
and burn out and so please join me on this journey.

the things that helped me to overcome stress and depression.
And also a trigger warning as well. We are going
to die deep into mental health. People are going to
(02:02):
share their stories and so I just want to share
that there possibly could be a trigger warning if it's
something that you are currently dealing with. All right, So
before we bring out our amazing guest, I want to
talk about some mental health stats.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
And I think this is going.
Speaker 2 (02:16):

just to have an understanding. And so I want to
give three stats today. This is from NAMI dot org

you are meaning some resources or if you need some
(02:36):

Speaker 1 (02:39):
At NAMI dot org.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
So the first stat is one in five US adults
experience mental illness. One and twenty US adults experience serious
mental illness.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
This one is very This stat is just wow.
Speaker 2 (02:57):

seventeen years old experience and mental health disorder. So if
you or someone you know is suffering our needs support,
you can call or text the number nine eight eight.

Okay, all right, so let's read her bio.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Brenda Simmons, known by her stage name as Sella John's,
is a sixty five year old contemporary gospel singer and songwriter.
She also writes poems and have been singing since.

and have five grandchildren. Let's welcome this warrior queen to
the show. And before she comes out, she is my
actual blood aunty. Yes, she is on my father's side.
(04:14):
So she's not just an amazing singer and not just
a songwriter and a grandma and working at.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
The school district, but she's also my aunt.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
But I got to take that niece's hat off and
put on my host hat. Let's welcome this warrior queen
Essella John's to the show.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Hello, Hello, Asella Johns. How are you.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
I'm blessed. I'm blessed.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Yes, yes, well, thank you so much for coming on
the show.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
I'm so excited, I said, I was like, let me call,
let me call my Aunty Essella John's and have her
come on the show.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
For having me is a privilege. It really is a privilege.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah, so thank you.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Yes, well, I appreciate that. Nothing like family. So yes,
we love to support each other for sure. Absolutely, it's
all about that. Yes, well, we are gonna talk about
you know, we're gonna dive deep. We're gonna talk about
your music. We're gonna talk about you know something, your
weeping to warriors story and so but before we start
and dive deep, we want to get to know who
you are. So tell the audience, brother, if you're listening
(05:25):
in or if you're watching, they would love to hear
about you.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Who are you?
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Tell us who you are, what you do, and where
you currently reside.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Well who am I?
Speaker 4 (05:35):
I am asking you, Princess Simmons, And I'm you know,
the baby of a baby.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Girl of nine in the family.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
And I was raised in the church, been at the
same church for us sixty two years.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Grady Christ Temple.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
And you stated, I am your auntie, been the school
bus driver for going on night teen years, which you
already had you know, read most of my bio.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
And I just love the Lord and I just love.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
This thing and write poems and bless people.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yes, yes, awesome, Yes, And we're gonna talk about one
of your songs today, Don't give Up, which we'll talk
about in just a minute. But I just wanted to say,
like today I was going through some I was going
through some stress as we go, as we know life
be life and right, and so I was going through
some stress and so your song popped up don't give up.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
And I was like, don't give up. I was like,
I'm gonna talk to my aunties today. I'll talk to
sell John today.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
And so that really encouraged me on today and so
we're gonna talk about that. So, but before we do,
I would love for you to share with our audience,
share a time in your life that you faced, you know,
a major obstacle and how did you manage to push
through that.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Well? As you know that, as some people don't. My
mom passed away read years ago. I was her caregiver
for ten plus years. And that's, like I said, as
being the baby girl, you know, you stick by your mom.
And so she was like, people say, your parent can't
be your best friend, but she was mine. And watching
(07:16):
her go down, you know, get into with sickness and stuff,
and then seeing and then hearing her and seeing her
pass away, that took me to a whole new level.
I went into a dark place that I'd never been in.
I didn't wasn't sure I was going to get out
of it. I didn't know how to. I prayed and
did you know what I thought I could, thought I
(07:38):
did everything, but it just couldn't get out.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Of it, but it took other people to.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Come into my life and help me get through it
with the prayer and first the help of God, you know,
and other people come in and help me get through it,
you know. And it it took me like almost two
and a half years to get out of that dark place.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
And it took me a long time to go to the.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Trips because I didn't see her there. So but yeah,
like I said, other people for doing my music and
writing and stuff, keeping my mind and especially going to
the studios, that was my theory. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
So yeah, yeah, so during so during that time when
you know, my because I was my that's my grandma too.
During that time of you know, I seen her, you know,
go through this and you're her caretaker. Was that a
time that you would say that was probably one of
your lowest times in your life where you were just like,
oh my gosh, I'm seeing my mom, you know, just
(08:37):
decline and like, Laura, what do I do? Like tell
us a little bit about, you know, when you were
like in that dark time.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Yeah, tell us about that.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Yeah, you know, it's I get very sensitive when I
start talking about my mom, but uh, I'm sorry, Yeah,
it's I mean it's it was hard, but I had
to keep myself together for her, you know, I didn't
(09:06):
want her to see me, you know, going through what
you know what I knew, she knew she was going through,
and now I wanted to be strong for her.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
It was hard.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
Many times I had to go in my room and
then she'll come and open the door, you know, to
make sure I'm there with her. She she didn't want
to be alone. I'm saying, I'm okay, mom, I'll be
out in the minute. But I did have to go
in my room and I did have to pray. I cried,
and I didn't let her know I cried. But yeah,
it's just watching her go down. I had to go
(09:39):
in my room and write songs. I had to get
me through what I've seen her going through.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
So yeah, absolutely absolutely sorry.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Didn't means I wouldn't go It's okay.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
It's okay, and no, this is you know, this is
the space for it.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
And that's and that's why I wanted this podcast so
we can talk about this, you know, because I'm sure
the audience that there's someone who has gone through it
or is currently going through seeing their loved one decline,
you know, and so we need to, you know, let
them know that there is hope, because in that moment,
you know, we're like, oh Lord, what's what's going on?
You know, I'm trying to save my you know, my
(10:16):
grandma or saved my mom or save you know. And
so yes, we we want to share, you know, and
shed that light and let people know that, yeah, it's
this could be the darkest time, but you know, there
is healing and there is hope definitely on the other side.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
And so let's talk about your your warrior moment.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
What helped you to get out of that that dark
despair that you were in.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
Well, like I said, it was at first me talking
to God and asking them to help me through it.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Then and I didn't have to call anybody. They actually
came to me. They called me and came over to
the house. And you know, well I was able to
vent and get out when I was, So that helped
instead of me keeping it in because I'm the type
of person that we hope stuff in and with them
(11:06):
with their help and and my family, you know, my
family helped you. You always encouraged me, Your songs encouraged me.
And then like I said, it was a slow process
for me to get out of it. But like I said,
with me going into the studios, that was my therapy
and talking to my producer and their wife. You know
that that helped out it. Talking to different people and
(11:29):
family members that got was getting me out of it,
you know that stead of me just falling up and
just being in a corner like I was, and clothing
my curtains and stuff.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
But yeah, just.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
People God, people, family and talking to them and writing
and doing poems and going to the studios that helped
a lot. Mm hm.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
So it's me it's important to have that support system
when you're going through some trials in your life.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
So like you said, having family, having people.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
To call you to encourage you, praying on a church
and just having that surrounding that's that's super important to
help when you're going through those dark times in your life.
Speaker 5 (12:10):

Speaker 2 (13:11):
So let's talk about the song Don't give Up. That's
one of my favorite songs. Let's talk about that song
and what inspired you to write that song?
Speaker 4 (13:21):
You know, it's it's it's it's really with my experience
of doing the writing and stuff, sometimes songs will get
written and.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
I'd be like, why am I writing this?
Speaker 4 (13:34):
M So.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Don't give Up actually was for.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
Like my daughter that's going through depression, and it's actually
for the people that were going you know, I didn't.
I knew I was depressed, but you know how you
sometimes just like okay, I'm okay. But I was writing
it actually for other people until I actually got it finished,
listen to it, and I said, that's really for me too.
(14:04):
I can't throw this on just anybody, you know, everybody
else without recognizing that I needed to to not give
up because I'm many times I did, I wanted to.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
And like I said, when my mom passed with and
the devil.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
Came to me and said, well, the voice came to
me and said, well, if you miss your mom that bad,
kill yourself or hurt yourself and then.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
You can see her, you know, just die here. You
know that?
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Wooh that that almost took me to another level. But
like I said, that's when all the people came in.
But don't give up. I applyed that to myself right now.
I didn't at first, but I was do right now,
like I said, for everybody else, and I said, Lord.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
Why am I writing this? Who am I writing this for?
Speaker 4 (14:45):
He said, you know, he always telling me just right,
you know, and then it blesses other people.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
But I am applying it to myself.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
Yeah, it's amazing how you know, it would just downloading
our spirit. So like when I was in treatment, I
was just righting how I was feeling the moment.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
And it sounds like for you, the same thing is
just downloaded, where the lyrics will.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Come to you and you don't sometimes even know it's
a song, and you're just like, oh, this is a song,
you know, and it sounds like in your case it
was the same. You're just kind of writing down, don't
give up, writing the lyrics down, and then you're just like, okay,
now this is a song, and so yes, how your
pain could definitely birth something beautiful, you know, and like
you said, you know that healing was also coming from
(15:25):
you writing it but also sharing it and then saying, hey,
this is not just for other people, this is also
for me. I'm healing through the song. Yes, absolutely, yes, yeah,
So let's talk about you know, if someone is going through,
you know, the loss of a loved one or if
they're grieving or they're seeing the decline of a loved one,
like what what what do you want to share with them?
(15:46):
What type of what inspiration would you like to share
with the audience today?
Speaker 4 (15:53):
First of all is praying next God to give it stress,
to keep you in your right mind and to keep
you uplifted.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
I know sometimes it's easier to say it.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
Than done then done, to do this stuff and then
be surrounded by people that care for you. Not just anybody,
because anybody could be around you and like oh whatever,
but people that care and that are and people that
are reaching out to you to comfort you and encourage you.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
Let them Let them do it, Let them do it, and.
Speaker 4 (16:25):
Then find something that you were interested in, like music
for me, write and for you and you know, find
something read a book and bull.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
You know whatever, go fishing, whatever, something to your mind. Occupied.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
You gotta be occupied. You can't just sit still, because
that'll make it worse.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
I'm which to that.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
So finding something that brings you hope, something that you enjoy.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
Doing, you know, Yes, is what I heard you say.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Yeah, And so I want I want to talk a
little bit about because you are in the education space
like myself, you know, and so I want to know
a little bit about, like how do you balance your
life being a mother, being a grandmother, being a musician,
being in the education space and educator. How do you
balance you know, you know, taking care of Estella.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
John Well, my my days Monday through Friday. It starts
since five o'clock in the morning.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Okay, it doesn't which is my job.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
But you know, I get up to do prayer whatever,
and then I get do it a by five o'clock area,
and then I'm off to work. I'm there all day
and I'm off at five point thirty six o'clock. I
come home, make sure the little one eat, you know,
I got the grandson slash son, make sure he got
(17:46):
something to eat. And sometimes it takes me at time
to go to sleep, you know, to relax because I'm
so super tired, or.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
I got a lot on my mind, or I have.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Some music on my I gotta write it down, you know,
words or something. But that's my day, my weekends. My
work clock doesn't never turn off. So I'm up at
probably five again doing what I gotta do, you know,
But I'm like to energize it, Bunny, I don't stop,
just keep going.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
And another thing I do know that you enjoy doing
because you you as a little girl, I knew this
as well, and then you love to post about it
that you love to cook, that is, and I see
that that's another thing.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
I don't know if that brings you joy or it's
just something you just.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Do because it seems like just okay, because it seems
like you have a passion for it, because you know,
people are always asking for your food.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
They're like, hey, cook this for me.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Make and it seems like you get joy out of that.
Speaker 4 (18:41):
So that's what I was.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
That's what I was just.
Speaker 4 (18:43):
Assuming, because my job, really my job, Miss Brenda, when
you go cook again, okay with y'all want we won't this.
I might get two or three people asked about it
by the time I put up the little flyer thing
and say, okay, I'm taking orders from.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
This and be I got this. Did fifty two eyes
just for my job.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
Yeah, I was four. And then I just did chicken spaghetti.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
I did twenty I think thirty of those, and today
was the last day for.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
That, so I'm taking a break on that. Then I
have to cook it at home for my you know,
family and other people outside of the job.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
But yeah, I liked it, cak, I do, yes, yes, yeah,
And you're cooking is delicious.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
I remember as a little.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
Girl going to Grandma's house and everybody, you and my
uncles and aunts was cooking. Yes, and Grandma was cooking.
We loved it. So yes, yes, yeah, so leg.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
Yeah, right exactly exactly.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
And we know Grandma, we know she She didn't have
like recipes like you put this amount, you put this
amount of She.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Just poured everything in the pot or her sweeper tea
of pie. She can't tell you how to make it.
She just pours it all. Yes, So I was.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
Like, Grandma, how you make the old baby? I just
put sugar in this. I don't even know her recipes,
so I can't even do. Yeah, Oh my gosh, well,
Espella John's, please tell the audience about your music. Where

I'm gonna give you two choices, and you're gonna tell
me what's your favorite choice and why? Okay, So I
was strategically kind of doing this thinking about you as
I was like writing this down.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
So all right, tea or coffee?
Speaker 3 (21:59):
Coffee?
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Coffee? Why?
Speaker 3 (22:01):
Why?
Speaker 4 (22:01):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Because I get up so early in the morning.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
I need it, right, I like to tell you, yo,
but getting up that early, I have to I have
to stay with coffee.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
Are you one of those drinking coffee all day or
just kind of like the first hour.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
When you wake up, that's the first hour.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Okay, Okay, I'm I'm the I'm all day and I'm
trying to stop that. That's not good for my sleep.
So all right, beach or mountain.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
Mountain?
Speaker 1 (22:31):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (22:32):
I like nature, yep, okay, yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
And we have a beautiful view here in Seattle of
the mountain, So okay, I would say beach for me,
I want something warm on the nice stand. That's that's
just me. So we get the cold in the rain
all the time. I'm like, let me go somewhere in
the hot, hot beach. So okay, now it's for you, okay.
Italian food or Thai.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Food, Italian I like. I like Italian. I tried ty food.
I don't care too much for it, okay, okay, So.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
You like the like the pastas and the pizzas over
the ty food all right, okay.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Yeah, not too much the pizzas. Just the pastas for pastas.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
Okay, all right, yep.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
And the last one, would you rather host dinner so
people would come come over, you cook the food, or
would you rather be a guest at dinner?
Speaker 3 (23:25):
Hosts?
Speaker 4 (23:26):
Okay, I'd rather host it because I like to see
people eat. Okay, all right, I'd like to have hosted.
And I'm getting ready to have and I will talk
to you about that. What's we off the air. I'll
get in touch with you. I'm getting ready to do
appreciation gathering on next month.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
So yeah, a host.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
Okay, yes, okay, And that's that's what I thought. I
was like, Oh yeah, I think She's gonna say host
because I know she so, Yes, yes, okay, well Usellah John's.
Is there anything else you want to share? Any shout
outs to anyone before we close out?
Speaker 4 (24:05):
Yes, I would like to first say that don't give
up if there's hope, and you know, just make sure
you pray to God and surround yourself with positive people.
They help you get through what you're going through. And
my shout out is to Nabel Davis, my producer, Nabel Davis,
(24:28):
and I never leave his wife out and Kim Davis
because you know, we'll take it up time from her
to do what we have to do as far as
the music. But I appreciate both of them. Those those
are my hearts. Nabel my producer, Maybelle Davis. I'm sure
everybody knows him. And then his wife, Miss Kim Davis.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Yeah, I love them, love them, Yes, just amazing producer
him and his son is my producer.
Speaker 3 (24:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
Yeah, So David's family shout out to you, we love
you and what is next for you? What is yes,
we love it?
Speaker 1 (25:05):
What is next for you?
Speaker 3 (25:07):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (25:07):
So I just laid down another song called when God
Speaks Okay, and that was as you know, June Harriston,
and that's the Women's retreat.
Speaker 3 (25:18):
That's the theme.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
And the funny thing about it was, I was writing
a song called when God Speaks, and when she came
to the Women's UH Convention Council at the church, she said,
what the theme for the Women's retreat is when God Speaks,
Everyone listens.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
I was like, whoa.
Speaker 4 (25:36):
So I told her, I said, I'm finished. I'm gonna
add that everyone listens. It's a very beautiful song.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
Though.
Speaker 4 (25:41):
Yeah, the Lord blessed me with the words, and she
said some words with me.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
I said, okay, this is your song. These words did so. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
So, and I do have one more song out that
I have not put out. Yeah yet enough is enough.
So I'm just trying to space everything out, you know.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
Right, Okay, And what's the release date of your single?
Do you have a release date?
Speaker 4 (26:03):
Well, the one, Shattered Pieces is not out. Yeah, that's
coming out on my birthday. I can word seventeen. It's
called Shattered Pieces, So that was coming out fair. The
when God Speaks she wants me to sing it at
the retreat things, so that might have to come out
in April.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
I don't know. I'm not sure.
Speaker 4 (26:23):
Yet, but that all I'm just singing and then release
it later and it you know, but look out for
shattered pieces is coming out fair.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
I heard the little snippet.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
I heard the little snippets that you had, and that
sounds good. So yes, we've got you don't know why
you said, you don't know why.
Speaker 3 (26:43):
I don't know where that came from.
Speaker 1 (26:45):
I don't it just drops, I don't downloaded.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
But God gives me a lot of my songs.
Speaker 4 (26:51):
He just said, just right, okay, Lord right and just right. Yeah,
that's might help somebody.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
Mm hmm for sure.
Speaker 2 (27:01):
Yeah, And that's amazing, And that's that's that's when you
know that's true talent, because that's not everyone. You know,
sometimes people need, you know, the music and not saying
that that's wrong or bad, but like when it's just
dropping your spirit, that that's when you know. It's just
like that's that's not you.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
You know that that's just not you. So yeah, awesome,
all right, Essella.
Speaker 2 (27:20):

much for coming on my show and for sharing your
story and for being vulnerable. And we know that this

Speaker 1 (27:40):

Speaker 3 (27:42):

help you?
Speaker 2 (27:51):

helped me today? Or I was singing it as I
was like feeling in some type of a way and
I and I your song came up and I was like, yep,
