Speaker 1 (00:00):
American Trail, The American Trail, please in Blood. Defended in Blood,

(00:31):
Chapter nine. The California Gold Rush.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
I'll be in San Francisco and then I'll around and
when I see the gold lumps there, I'll pick them
off the ground. I'll scrape the mountains clean, my boys,
I'll drain the rivers, drive a pocket full of rocks,
bring homes. So, brothers, don't you cry. Oh, California, that's
the land for me. I'm going to Sacramento with a

(01:19):
washed cubbone.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Pretty good, dad, Pretty good, Hi, folks, This is Lenny Crosby.
Guess you know my dad.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
We'll move over a bit there.

Speaker 5 (01:27):
When you say I give the.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
Old man a little room.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Euh, why you bet, say dad? I kind of went
along with that song.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Well, boy, that was number one. Did you know that?

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Number one on the hit Parade back in eighteen forty nine,
The Day's the goal Rush.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
Yeah, long about the time California was ready to latch
onto the US.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Ah.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
They were the real rugged days.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yes they were, and so they were. But California's come
a long long way since then.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Yeah, all our big cities, farm lands, industries.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
More to it than that too.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Boy, I like to fool around with the idea that
California is sort of, sort of a digestive American history.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
I guess it is.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Dan so much happened is such a sholl.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
Look at here.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
By the time California was ready to sping along with
the rest of the US, it had a lot of
catching up to do.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Sure caught up though.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
All right then that's what I mean. Now, look, you
know what I like to do here.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
I got a yarn about a young fellow your age
who was around during the gold Rush days. You want
me to unwrap the story, boy, go ahead that I recall.
His name was Barney Barnie, Barnie Brooks. This is how
he told his story.

Speaker 6 (02:26):
I'll never forget it. That day we dropped Anchor in
San Francisco Bay.

Speaker 7 (02:30):
It was so foggy we couldn't even see the land.

Speaker 6 (02:33):
Then sailors started deserting the ship. The captain up on
the poop tack, yelling at him as they rode away.

Speaker 5 (02:39):
Trump, break your swa some a fort up your stock.

Speaker 6 (02:52):
They never came back. They were after gold. Just about
a year before that, gold was discovered in the sacon
Cnal Valley on Captain Sutter's Land. My dad and I
heard about it back in Boston. Everybody went wild. Everybody
wanted to rush right out to California and get rich.
One night, my dad.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
Said, Bonnie o'falloon, we're going out west. We'll get enough
gold to buy some land and some cattle.

Speaker 6 (03:19):
A couple of days later he left went over land.
I came out by way of Panama with some other people.
One of them was a young school teacher, Miss Taylor,
Virginia Taylor, a friend of mine. It seemed years before
we got to San Francisco, but at last afar cleared.

(03:40):
Miss Taylor and I stood on deck, looking at the
coast and waiting for my dad to comfort us. A
barrack looking country. It's wild, all right, it's madden. Look
at him. They must do this Sierra.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
In the baden.

Speaker 6 (03:53):
We're captain Fremont explored. My dad came aboard. He'll Graham
Mexican sombrero, red shirt, big.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
Strong sunburn, selling valuable time here waiting for this boat.

Speaker 6 (04:07):
I thought we'd never get here, Tom, So did I Dad?
Did you find any gold? Have you been to the
gold field?

Speaker 5 (04:13):
Yes, Hey, give me the bags. Let's get ashore.

Speaker 6 (04:21):
I'd never seen my dad like that before, so jumpy
we went ashore. What a place. Crowds every language in
the world. Hundreds of tents pitched all over the hills.
No real streets, just mud have chats, hunts, a few
regular houses. One was called the Parker House, next door
to a gaming place, the Eldorado. Dad had found his

(04:44):
rooms at the Fremont Family Hotel. I was not packing
in his room when he came in with Miss Taylor.

Speaker 5 (04:50):
There's a fellow here, Brannan, Sam Brandon. You ought to
see him, Virginia. He's got pull in this town.

Speaker 6 (04:55):
Will he help me with the He'll be.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
Glad to see you. Sam's civic minded. You tell him
you want to build a school out here, and he
won't be able to do enough for you.

Speaker 6 (05:03):
Then I'll certainly see him.

Speaker 5 (05:05):
Oh here, I want to show you something, Bonnie. Quit
what you're doing?

Speaker 7 (05:09):
What is it dead?

Speaker 5 (05:09):
Yea in this stow. I'll wait a minute here, catch
Bonnie open and have a look. Yeah, here's a mellow bag.

Speaker 7 (05:19):
Tom.

Speaker 6 (05:20):
That's that's gold, more.

Speaker 5 (05:22):
Than forty thousand dollars, And I'm going back for more.

Speaker 6 (05:25):
Oh boy, going.

Speaker 5 (05:26):
Back for more.

Speaker 6 (05:27):
Tom.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
I thought you thought.

Speaker 6 (05:30):
What you were going to buy land and cattle.

Speaker 5 (05:33):
I want my share of the gold Virginia.

Speaker 6 (05:35):
Eh, I'm going looking to the gold field no time.

Speaker 5 (05:37):
I'm sorry, Oh please please me? I said no, how
many more times? Uh, I'm sorry, son, I didn't mean
the shout.

Speaker 6 (05:45):
That's all right there. Next morning, Miss Taylor went to
see Sam Brannan. He was a newspaper publisher. She took
me with her. Mister Brannon was sure a fiery.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
Character, ma'am.

Speaker 8 (06:01):
They've sure gone haywire in this town. They all think
they're gonna get rich. Maybe a few will, and the
rest will have their hearts broken. I've seen men destroying
themselves up.

Speaker 5 (06:13):
In the goldfields, I suppose so.

Speaker 8 (06:16):
Now, this town was built for eight hundred people, ma'am.
In six months we've seen ten thousand people pour into it.
We've got a criminal population here, thugs, hooligans, scum of
the earth expected but not condoned. And I'm for hanging
or shooting every known criminal. When a man gets to

(06:36):
be a minister decent, people get rid of my say kill.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
Him like a mad dog.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
It's the law, prescribes it.

Speaker 5 (06:42):
The law.

Speaker 8 (06:43):
Isn't there any who will be we're organizing the Vigilance Committee,
a man for better or for worse. California's soon going
to be a state. With all this gold here, It's
gonna be mighty important country.

Speaker 5 (06:57):
But the decent folk here have gotta make it a
fit place to live in.

Speaker 6 (07:00):
I want to do my share, mister Bannon. I want
to help establish a school system.

Speaker 8 (07:05):
Proud of your, ma'am good and proud of you. Proud
to see your teacent American girl come out here.

Speaker 5 (07:12):
Only it's no place for you yet.

Speaker 8 (07:14):
I'm here now, you got any folks out here?

Speaker 6 (07:17):
No nor in the East, I have no one but myself.

Speaker 8 (07:21):
Proud of you, little lady. Will build your school, We'll
build a church. But first the scumb's gotta be cleaned out, now, ma'am.
I hate criminals, I hate hooligans. I hate him worse
than poison, don't you, Sonny, Yes, sir, Tom Brooks's boy.

Speaker 4 (07:39):
Eh.

Speaker 6 (07:39):
You know my dad.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
I know him.

Speaker 6 (07:42):
He bought Indians in.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
A black Hawk warser I know he did.

Speaker 5 (07:44):
Son.

Speaker 6 (07:45):
He'd be good for your Vigilance Committee.

Speaker 8 (07:47):
Yes, well, we could sure use a man like him.

Speaker 6 (07:57):
When we got back to the Fremont Hotel, Dad was
just about going out. He had a strange look. I
had a feeling something had happened.

Speaker 5 (08:08):
I was out. They knew I was out, and they
came here.

Speaker 6 (08:15):
What is it?

Speaker 5 (08:16):
Tom bandits Big Jack Fisher's gang came here in broad daylight,
took everything in fight. They got my gold, the gold.
You stay here till I come back.

Speaker 6 (08:28):
Some go to mister Brandon and the vigilance committee.

Speaker 5 (08:31):
Tom, Tom, please where this is the Gold Coast, Virginia.
Every man makes his own rules, every man's his own
judging jury.

Speaker 6 (08:39):
It's not true. It's not true. Dad went out. At first.
I couldn't think it was the look on Dad's face,
Miss Taylor, He's gonna look for those men yet, I'm
going to Sam Brandon for help. You stay here, Bonnie,
what's come over your father? He mustn't, can't take the

(08:59):
law into his own hands.

Speaker 7 (09:01):
Bonnie, Bunny, stay there.

Speaker 6 (09:09):
I stood there for a minute. Then I ran out.
I kept running and running until I saw my dad
and caught up with him.

Speaker 5 (09:18):
Dead. Go back, honey, and said, I'm scared. I told you, please, please,
I said, go back.

Speaker 6 (09:28):
The first time Dad ever hit me, I just stood there.
I saw him going to the El Dorado. I started
running again. Donnie, Sonny, come back here. I heard Miss
Tailor crawling.

Speaker 7 (09:45):
I looked back once she was with.

Speaker 6 (09:47):
Sam Branda and some other men. But I kept running
until I got to the El Dorado. When I first
got to the door, then a woman was handling the
place was no lockrod. Then suddenly everybody was awful. Still,

(10:13):
all you could hear was a lot of breathing and
my dad walking slowly towards another man who stood near
a table. It was like watching the tiger. Dad didn't
even draw his gun, and the bandit seemed like he
was frozen.

Speaker 5 (10:38):
I've come for my gold, for sure, I said, I'd
come for my gold. Be sure. I'm cutting three.

Speaker 6 (10:49):
I don't know why I did it. I saw the
bandit's hand move towards his gun. I didn't want my
dad to get shot, and I ran between them. This
is a bandit fire, honey. I heard the shot. I
felt the hot pain in one shoulder. Then there was
another voice.

Speaker 5 (11:04):
Don't move anybody.

Speaker 8 (11:07):
I'm Sam Brannan. This is the Vigilance Committee. We're getting
some law and order around this town.

Speaker 5 (11:14):
Bonnie, Bonnie, speak to me, get a doctor quick.

Speaker 6 (11:27):
Next thing, I remember I was in my bed. Miss
Taylor was standing there with my dad and Sam Brannan.

Speaker 5 (11:36):
He's all right, tom Son, did you did you go
back there? I don't want it, Bonnie, I don't want
to see it. I just want you to get well.

Speaker 6 (11:48):
I'm all right.

Speaker 5 (11:49):
All the things I ever taught you, all the things
that matter, I was turning my back on them, respect
for law and order, Bonnie. Your dad's ashamed.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
Dad.

Speaker 6 (12:03):
Are you going to join mister Brandon's the Durance Committee?

Speaker 5 (12:06):
He already has? Barnime.

Speaker 6 (12:08):
Gee. It was grand watching San Francisco go into a
big city and my dad helping hundreds of ships sailing
in from all.

Speaker 7 (12:23):
Over the world, more and more settlers coming, building, told
the stars, churches, California getting to be a state, and
me feel in California was just as much as my
home as Boston had been, because it was all part
of the United States.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
Now, hi, folks, this is Crosbie again.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
I was quite a story, Dan, all right, Lindsay, But
don't go thinking it's all wrapped up.

Speaker 4 (13:00):

Speaker 5 (13:02):
It's your story now, boy.

Speaker 3 (13:04):

the ones who'll be carrying the ball pretty soon, this
this long and ordered deal. You know a few people
in this country and around the world are trying to
break it up.

Don't you guys.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Let him do it. It'll be up to you to see
that these United States keep moving along in the good
old American way.
