gun smoke.

Gun smoke, the story of the violence that move West
with young America, the.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Story of a man who moved with it.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Matt Bill, United States Marshall, Take it easy, mom. You
know your young folks are going to eat when you
give them sugar crinkles for breakfast.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
Yes, boys and girls love sugar.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Crinkles, and no wonder it's the sugar rice treat that's
just right sweet makes breakfast more fun than a circus. Now,
the reason sugar crinkles suit young folks to a tea
is this. Some sugar coated cereals they tried seem too sweet,
others don't seem sweet enough. But when they dip their
(01:33):
first spoonful of sugar crinkles, m they've discovered a sugar
coated cereal that's just right sweet. And say, those young
folks of yours love to dip into the pack and
eat sugar crinkles as a snack too, So better get
several packages and now gun smoked starring William Conrad.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
I got a horse that's saddle, mister Dylon.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
I'm so hungry I could eat a whole hog.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
All the hog you got this morning's cooking on that
stick right there?
Speaker 5 (02:31):
Chester, Is it done?
Speaker 2 (02:34):
That depends on how hungry you.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Are it's done.
Speaker 6 (02:42):
It would be good to get back to Dodge tonight
and sleeping in bed again.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Civilization has made you soft, Chester.
Speaker 6 (02:51):
Maybe so, but I get mighty tired of using my
back for a mattress and my belly for covering.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Obviously, Chester, you were born for greater things and rooting
around on the priory and living in the rain.
Speaker 5 (03:03):
It hasn't been raining, mister Dolan.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
No, no, it hasn't. But it well, Chester, so early
it will rain.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
Sure we've had brought some more bacon. See, don't old
man Granby live around here? Maybe we could borrow old
from him.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
According to what I've always heard, Old Granby wouldn't loan
anybody or anything.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
You don't really think he's a rich mind. You like
to say, Oh, I.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Don't know, Chester, Sometimes a man's entirely different from his reputation.
I only met Granby once or twice. He seemed like
a nice enough.
Speaker 6 (03:38):
Old fella, though, well, I wouldn't want to live out
here all alone with nothing but a few horses for company.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Oh, he's used to it.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
Well, even if he.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Does have a lot of money hid away, there's.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
No place to spending out here.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Granvey's pretty old for the pleasures Dodge has to offer Chester.
Speaker 5 (03:56):
Well, I hope I am never that old.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
At the rate you're burning yourself out of Chester, you
never will be, so don't worry about it.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
Oh and I missed doing. I live mighty quiet for
a young fella.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Who's free and still full of blood.
Speaker 5 (04:13):
Sure, Hey, we'll go over there.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
No, Now, that's springing dust laying right on the ground there.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Yeah, I've been watching the Chester. It's not on the
ground though, As a drywatch runs along there. Somebody's driving
stock down it.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
Maybe it's old man Granby.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
That may be that's gonna say hello.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
Alright.
Speaker 6 (04:33):
Sure, if it is old man Granby, we might just
ask him about a little bacon.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
Huh.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
We can ask him no harm in that he Now
that's horses down, sir, Yes, sir, I can see the head.
Speaker 6 (05:02):
Now, I don't see anybody driving him.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
That'll be along in a minute. Hell, let's wait here.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
There he comes.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, hello, he stopped. That's not old Grandley. Let's write
down and say hello. Anyway. Now that's Grandbey's brand on
(05:39):
those horses, so he.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Must have hired him a hand and maybe.
Speaker 5 (05:52):
Hello, Hello.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Are you working for Grandvy and I.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
Ain't working for nobody?
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Mister uh oh, then where is he? Where is who Granby?
Speaker 4 (06:06):
I don't know no Granby.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
But those are his horses you're driving?
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Oh they are? Yeah, I ain't driving him.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
What do you mean they got ahead.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Of me in the wash?
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Here?
Speaker 2 (06:20):
That's all I see? Your cowboy?
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Yeah, sure, I'm a cowboy.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
You don't look like one. You don't ride like one either.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
You're asking the questions, mister.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
No decent cowboy'd run another man's horses, not a dry wash,
just because he didn't want to get up on the
bank and ride around him.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
I told you they got in front of him, is all.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
How come you're not carrying a gun?
Speaker 4 (06:50):
Does a man have to carry a gun?
Speaker 2 (06:51):
No? I bet you're the only man within a thousand
miles of the earth who isn't carrying one.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Maybe I got a better conscience than the rest of you.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Maybe look, mister, you've run those horses about five miles
off of Old Granby's place. You want to give us
a hand, We'll run him back.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
I'm in a hurry.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
It won't take long. The old man might be a
couple of days finding them. If we don't, you worry
about him.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
I gotta get in to die.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
We'll ride in with you afterwards.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
I ain't gonna do it.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Look a lot better if you did. I.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
I'd like to mister, but I can't wait. I'm leaving
now so long.
Speaker 5 (07:38):
You gonna let him go?
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Miss Wait a minute, Chester, I'll let him hear what
lead sounds like. He'll show me all right, then right
back here.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
Don't kill me, mister.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
I'm not gonna unless you try to run away.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
Why would I try to run away?
Speaker 2 (08:06):
You just did? Chester, Yes, right down the back and
have those horses off, starting back up the wash. We'll
be out of here by the time they're back.
Speaker 5 (08:14):
All right, mister Dillon, you'll stay right close to me.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Fellow, don't try anything smart. We got the grand V's.
If he says it's okay, then you can go wherever
you like.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
I don't know Granby, never been there.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
I we'll show you the way. Come on, let's get
up on the bank.
Speaker 6 (08:51):
Oh, man grahamy can find these horses all right now, mister.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Dillon, Yeah, but I want this cowboy here to meet him.
We'll see if he's in the house.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Oh, I'll wait for you.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Get off that horse, Feller, go on, Hm, that's better.
Come on, we'll take a look. Well, what are you
(09:30):
waiting for.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Nothing?
Speaker 2 (09:34):
You go ahead, Chester, Yes, you meet your John. Looks
like I'll have to herd this man. And you've been
kind of bulky ever since we ran into you. Mister.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
I don't like being dragged around. I never did.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
I just want you to meet all grand Bay. You'll
be grateful for you help and run his horse's back here.
Speaker 7 (09:59):
I know.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
But you think Mr, you think I was stealing them horses. Well,
I never heard of the old man. I was never
near this place.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Yeah, I saw you told me. But you're here now.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
I ain't afraid of you or nobody.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Then let's go into the house. Come on, Mr Jeng Yeah,
what is it.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
Ye, old man grand Begin he's in there?
Speaker 6 (10:28):
Or what's wrong right in the room here? Mister gunning.
He's hanging there. What somebody's gone and hung him right
in his own house. Uh I, I don't wanna see
him anymore.
Speaker 5 (10:37):
You go take a look.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Put your gun and hold it on this Manchester. If
he makes a mold, shoot him.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Yes, Now you just stand there real quietly. I ain't
gonna do nothing. You sure ain't.
Speaker 6 (10:56):
And just because I happen to be in the country,
it don't mean I killed nobody.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
Mister Dillon will decide about that. Who is this mister Dillon?
Speaker 5 (11:05):
Anyway?
Speaker 4 (11:06):
He's a United States marshal At who Marshall looks like
you run into the wrong people, fella.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
I'll hold your gun, Chester, search you alright?
Speaker 6 (11:17):
You get her in the whole ride, turn around.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
The house is all torn up. He must have been
looking for old grand Vy's money.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
I was never in the house.
Speaker 5 (11:34):
Here's nothing on him, nothing.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
All right, Chester, here's your gun, catch it, thank you? Alright? Now?
What's your name, fella?
Speaker 4 (11:43):
Tremble, Joe Tremble?
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Where you're from?
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Up north?
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Up north?
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Where all over?
Speaker 2 (11:52):
What are you doing down here? Tremble?
Speaker 4 (11:54):
Making a change?
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Yeah? Sure? And some cowboy you run into to you
about Grand v B and Rich so you came here
and kicked the old man around and hung him and
then tried to find the money.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
That's a lie.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
It's the first time I was ever.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Near the place.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
I'm sure you did it, Tremble, but I wish I
had more evidence. A court of law just might not
convict you. The way things.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Stand, you're gonna let me go.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
No, I'm arresting you, and you're gonna stand trial, and
I'll do my best to see you hung.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
I didn't do what I tell you, and I'll go
free to You'll.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
See there's something mighty wrong about you, Tremble, and I
can't figure it at all, but I'll sure find out.
Speaker 5 (12:57):
Mother.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
It does your heart good. I know when your young
folks eat all of their breakfast cereal. That's why I'm
so happy to tell you about new sugar crinkles. Sugar crinkles,
you know, is the sugar rice treat. That's just right,
sweet crisp golden nuggets of sugar coated rice. They make
breakfast more fun than a circus. Why young folks love
(13:18):
sugar crinkles so much? They disappear like magic. Now you've
had experience with sugar coated cereals, it seemed too sweet
to you, and others that just don't seem sweet enough
to the youngsters. Well, what a wonderful surprise sugar crinkles
will be to your whole family. For new sugar crinkles
really are just right sweet. Remember, sugar crinkles make great
(13:42):
snacks too. And there's even more good news about sugar crinkles.
Right now, there's a full sized package of charms, that
wonderful fruit flavored candy. In every special package of sugar crinkles,
your dealer has ten delicious fruit flavored charms.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
Free of extra cost to you.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
So hurry get sugar Crinkles as soon as you can.
Now back to gun Smoke.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
We let Joe Tremble dig a grave up behind the house.
Then we laid Old Granby in it and covered him
with dirt. I was pretty sure now that the old
man had never had an extra dollar in his life,
and that he'd been killed for no reason at all. Anyway,
Tremble had done a pretty thorough job looking for the money,
(14:52):
and he'd found nothing. On the right of the dodge.
I tried to figure out just what he was. Body
doesn't seem to have fit anywhere. He wasn't a cowboy
or a hunter, or a gambler, or even just a dripker.
(15:13):
After we got him locked up in jail that night,
Doc and I went over to the Texas Trail for
a drink with Kitty, and I was telling him about it. Now,
then this fellow Tremble.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
How old is he?
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Oh, around twenty five, I guess, Doctor.
Speaker 7 (15:32):
Then he couldn't be running away from home.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Now he's a little old for that, kiddy. Well, anyway,
they'll hang him. Well, I hope the judge grees with you, doctor,
Why shouldn't he? All I got so far is circumstantial evidence.
But then you should have shot him out on the prairie.
It's a good thing you're not a law man.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
Now.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Maybe if I were, there'd be fewer killings around here.
I dot that.
Speaker 7 (16:01):
You going up to Hayese for the trial.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
Man, Yeah, i'll have to kiddy, that'll.
Speaker 7 (16:06):
Take a week, I suppose, Oh, Bob, why yes, nothing,
only you've just been away for ten days.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Uh have to wear an a living kitty.
Speaker 7 (16:17):
You could make more money gambling right here in.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Dodge, Kiddy, don't start sad.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
Good evening, Marshall, Oh Major, I'd like a word with you, Marshall.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
A sure, Major, So we can go over to the
bar then, huh, I'll be back, Kitty.
Speaker 7 (16:34):
Doc, No hurry, Matt. Doc's got a lot of money.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Oh, I'll buy you one drink, Kitty, just one drink.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
That it's all.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Well, it's a start, Doctor, let's go meet you. I
had to come to dog John other business, marshalmen, but
I wanted to pass the word to you that we're
looking for a man like oh.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
The homy yes, uh, deserter? Oh not from Fort Dodge?
Where was he stationed? Major?
Speaker 3 (17:01):
He was with a seventh Cavalry at Fort Lincoln.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
How un't the the coda?
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Uh? And for some reason they think he hitted South. Now.
I don't have much of a description of him, just
that he was a private about or twenty five, curly
blonde hair and uh hit a scar on his left hand.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Yeah, that fits. What's his name? Major? He enlisted as
Joe Good, but he's known to have used the name
timboom ah All, he's right here in Dodge. What I
got him locked up in jail?
Speaker 5 (17:35):
Well?
Speaker 3 (17:35):
Uh, yeah, that's fine, Marshall, But.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
How did you know?
Speaker 2 (17:38):
I think he murdered an old man who lived a
day's ride north of here. I'm gonna have him tried
for it. Now.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
That won't be necessary now, Marshall, I'll take over custody.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Of now now, m then he'd be tried at Fort
Lincoln for desertion. I want him tried for murder, and
I gotta be there to present the evidence.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
You could go up to Fort Lincoln now.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
That Dakotas are out of my territory. Major. Besides, this
is a civil crime. The army wants that man, Marshall.
I'm sorry, Major, he's gonna be tried in Haze. First,
he's still a soldier. Even if he did dessert, I'll
judge lets him off. You can have him, but not otherwise. Major,
he tortured and hung an innocent old man, and I'm
(18:18):
gonna do my best to see him punished for it.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Well, I'll have to take this up with my superiors. Marshall.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Yeah, you better hurry. I'm going to Haze with him tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
I hope you won't regret this martial.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
I won't, Major out I tremble is properly punished. I won't.
I didn't wait till morning, but started up for Haze
with Joe Tremble that night. The trial lasted a week,
(18:50):
and in spite of all the arguments I made, the
judge finally decided that there wasn't enough real evidence to
convict him to make Tremble confess that he was too
smart for that, so there was nothing to do but
bring him back. Turning moment into the Army, I said
(19:11):
word to Fort Dodge, and the next morning the Major
himself appeared to take him into custody.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
Well, Marshall, it looks as though you didn't have much
of a civil case after he.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Killed Old Granby. I know he did majure after all
the laws of the law.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
Yes, and in the army orders and orders. I'm just
sorry you're a judge didn't convict him after all?
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Is that so?
Speaker 3 (19:37):
Uh? Chester?
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Yes, he bring Tremble out him?
Speaker 5 (19:41):
All right, you.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Major. I'll give the Army credit for one thing. M
what's that? Tremble and I rode back some eighty miles yesterday,
and when we got here, he wanted to sit up
and play cards with Chester.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
Huh. There may be some bad men in the cavalry,
marsh true, but they're all tough.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
He's miss Dylan.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Huh. He's yours.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
Major, Private Tremble, Sir, you're under military arrest.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
Private not privileged to salute besides you and mist of
this private gool not Tremble, Yes, sir, report to the
guard outside.
Speaker 4 (20:25):
Yes, sir, uh just.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
A minute, Tremble. You uh know that you're mighty lucky,
don't you. You shoulda died for what you've done.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
I told you i'd go free, Marshall.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
It'll catch up with you someday, Tremble. It always does somehow.
That's all I wanted to say. Yes, Well, thank you, Marshall.
(21:07):
I'll be getting along. Oh, Major Uh you said that,
uh you were sorry that the judge didn't convict him.
Why have you changed your mind? Well?
Speaker 3 (21:16):
I have orders from General Terry to return him to
the Dakotas, to Fort Lincoln.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Raw. They'll be tried there, but he won't be hung
for just desertion.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Oddly enough, Marshall, he won't even be tried for some
months anyway, he won't. No, it seems that the seventh
Cavalry needs every man available. They're leaving Fort Lincoln on
an expedition against the Sioux and the Northern China Alas.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
Su uh uh a wonderful. Sitting Bull is still the
chief medicine man with him.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
Sitting Bull, Yeah, I've never heard of him, but I
expect the seventh will.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
Be heading into Montana territory if there after Sitting Bull's
tribe they will. He's always had a large camp over
on a little big horn. So yeah. Oh, by the way,
who's in command of the seventh Cavalry? Now?
Speaker 3 (21:59):
Oh? An officer I have served under a couple of years.
I never did care for him, a general Custer.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
