(16:18):
With our American servicemen, in manycountries around the world, they have a
wonderful opportunity to observe new customs andtraditions. What might have seemed strange before
is becoming pretty familiar to them. For instance, take this business of superstitions
or omens. In Holland and Germany, if you meet a left handed person
on a Tuesday morning, that's abad omen. In Sweden, if you

(16:41):
turn around when starting out in abusiness trip, so I will it turn
out badly? German girls place theirshoes at right angles with the side of
their beds to bring a visit fromtheir sweethearts. And in Japan and the
Far East there is a superstition tocover practically every event of the day.
All these things might sound strange, but as our servicemen have observed, we

(17:02):
have plenty of superstitions too. Let'sjust count some of the things that are
lucky or finding a horseshoe lucky, wily plover lucky, black cat, crossing
your path unlucky, walking under aladder unlucky, breaking a mirror seven years
bad luck. Spilling salt unlucky unlessyou throw some over your left shoulder,

(17:25):
Knocking on a wood lucky, arabbit's foot lucky. All those are just
a few of them. Lots ofpeople carry a lucky coin or a charm
of some sort. All of ushave a lucky number, and whenever we
have something good happen to us,we know it's our lucky day. People
a world over are great believers inthis business of luck. That's all the
superstitions are based on. They're eithermeant to bring on good luck or keep

(17:48):
bad luck away. According to thecustoms and traditions of your own people,
you do certain things to try toinfluence that luck. Now, the way
of doing things may vary between differentpeople, the ideals are the same.
These customs are important to the peoplewho follow them. Our service men are
hoping to maintain good will by observingthe customs of other people in other lands.

(18:12):
Now, our producer, mister CummingsAct two of Shame, starring Alan
Ladder in the title role and VanHeflena's start and Ruth Hussey asked Marian.
Saturday came and with it the homesteader'sweekly shopping trip to Grafton's general store.

(18:33):
But this Saturday was to be verydifferent and long. Remember what can I
do you for? Well, you'regonna have to ask my wife Craft and
Marion's got the shop unless you haveone team for sure, be in the
Pentagon party to make firework? Whatkind of fireworks for big celebration Fourth of
July and your spirts vending anniversary allthe same way. That's right, amen,

(18:57):
Yes, you Missy Grafton. WhenI get to this empty soda pop,
well, one bottle brings just aboutone stick of candy. But first
you go through those swinging doors overthere and you give the bottle to Will
all right, Joey, Yeah,I'll take that bottle. Well, if

(19:22):
you want to please, I wantto Well, now look you here what
we got. Yeah, there's ashort buster, the one we've called soda
pot bound, two whiskeys. Two. He looky, big farmer. I

(19:49):

money, will, but I'm gettingthe drinks. Yeah, Like listen,

(20:37):
no, that's cool down a bit, eh. I mean I could use
a man like you. I'm workingfor Starting. Whatever he's paying all double,
I'm not interested. What's so goodabout Starting? I like him?
And he's got a pretty way?Why you dirty swinging? All that gave

(21:03):
you a chance. Nobody messes upone of my boys and gets away with
it. Now we're gonna rough youup, Shane. We're gonna ride you
out of this valley. Joey,Joey good out here? Seen is too
many Let's go. I don't likeit was my man to run away with
you. Please, been too manysins too? Oh? My boys close

(21:27):

we better stay on any Joel allright, I'm gonna make it home here,
give me that action handle after day. I don't think those racker brothers

(22:06):

Shane. I think I ought toput some of this turpentine on that cut
of yours. Whatever you say,it's going to hurt bad. Ohma.
You wouldn't say nothing, no matterhow much it hurt. Joey back to

(24:03):
Huh yeah? Are you really goingto show me how to shoot?
Huh? Well, like I said, Joey, I promise. But well,
first of all, you see yousee how I wear my hoster.
It's higher than Paul where is his? Most men wear I'm either too low
and some either weather too high.Either way, you see? Thanks too

(24:25):

Is that the way the real gunfightersdo? No, not necessarily, you

show me how to shoot? Better? Do what your mother says? Joey

(25:34):
Bang Bang by Shane. I don'twant my boy to build his life around
guns. A gun is just anothertool, Marian. It's as good as
bad as the man who uses itis the man himself, Shane, that's

(25:56):
nothing right. You come the celebrationover the ship SAIDs aren't you well if
they want me, well, ofcourse they do. Now go on and
hitch up the team. We're gonnahave the dog gun. This big time
you ever saw. Listen to memore speeches, that's all. This is

(26:33):
gonna be one point of July withoutno tall know it. It's more than
fourth of your life. This wasthe day your style at coffins. That
book, it's betting that's good.On our nation's independence day, Joe lost
his own. Come on, y'all, now y'all say something, Well,

(26:56):
well, all I can say isit's it's It's true. Ten years ago
I gave my independent, but noman gave it up as easy as he.
That's right. And once more,I wouldn't trade places with any man
in this world. Boy who's gettingthirsty, it's sto Tory and look what

the Graftings, I walked right pastRicker. Say, by the way,
it's aw Ricker talking to a newman in there. A stranger wearing a
couple of guns. What's his name? What do you look like? Oh?

(27:42):
Hello, Shane? This man whathe looked like? He's kind of
lean acts two guns on his heads. Was he wearing a blackhout? Yeah?

Looks like a gun fight over inChyan Shane, this Wilson. Would
you know him if you saw him? Maybe? But as Wilson, he's

about this kind of business. Wellmaybe we ought to be glad he does.
At least we know what's going on. Just what is going on?

honey, Well come on, everybodyknow it's a party. That'ster Shane'ster Shane.

(28:32):
Yes, I've been wanting to goto the blacksmith shop, but your

torn. You think maybe you couldsometime go to the blacksmith with me?
Well, I might, I'll gowith you, excellent. Any time you
won't, I'm not afraid of bulliesand cowards. I'll tell him, so

(28:52):
the best thing to do is tellhim nothing. I'll tell him. You
see if I don't, just seeif I don't, All right, go,
I jumped down open the gate.Son, quite a minute, somebody's

(29:17):
doing at Florus? Joe, what'ssmall than Riker? Right right in?
Folks, Brother Ruth, come topay you a little visit? Go on
drive in your place, ain't itit? Sure is? Joe? Who's
that with Riker? Over there bythe barn? Seeing shone on that white

(29:42):
horse? Yeah? I see kindof laying and working a black hat?
Oh, there's done you man,Riker. Hey, something i'd like to
talk over with you, star Allright, hello, laying round on a

(30:03):
barrel head? Would you like towork for me? I'm done working for
others. I'll pay your top wages. You can run your cattle with mine.
And what's more, I'll buy yourhomes. I'm not interested in sat
a price you think is reasonable.Started you'll find me reasonable too. You
can't force me to do anything,Rufe, because I'm in the right.

(30:23):
You, what do you know aboutright? I come to this country when
you weren't much old living, andthat boy yours there, we had some
rough times. Cattle we brought in, hazed off the Indians and rustlers.
I still got a bad shoulder froma shy on arrowhead. And people move

(30:44):
in and fence off my range, fence me off from water, and I
gotta keep moving my stock. Andyou say we got no right to the
range. No right. I'm notbelittling you, riker, but you didn't
find this country. There were trappershere, and there were Indian traders long
before or you showed up. Theytamed this country a lot more than you
did. Do you think you've gotthe right to say that nobody else has

(31:06):
got any Well, that ain't theway the government looks at it, all
right, that's your answer to me, that's my answer. Then you They
don't give a man much choice, all right, Wilson. Let's go Shane,

(31:26):
that fellow with Riker. Yeah, yeah, it's Wilson, all right.
When I was talking about what doyou think Riker once with him?
Well that's not too hard to figure. Wilson's got only one lineup business,
and it ain't punching cows. Ilike start. But I tell you,

(32:00):
Julie, but if I have to, you mean, I'll kill him if
you have to. That's just whathe means a Ruth. Oh, I
can't have any run in with thelaw. Grafton's watching the center. Well,
lucky there, lucky there. Itwasn't GM here. You're true,

(32:20):
Rufe. A couple of those subbusted. Yeah, Shipstead and Stonewall carry
maybe I had to take care ofNo. Oh, this isn't the time.
I'm not ready yet. How longare you gonna keep on waiting?

(32:42):
Ruth? Let me gun him. When word gets around the rest of the
pack, I'll stampede out of here. I don't know it'd be easy.
It's gotta look right, will itwill? How about it? All right?

(33:06):
Hey? Yo, are you talkingto me? Huh man, No,
don't you go on to the Blacks. No Tory, No, see
I hear they cut you. Stonewall. You're going wrong with that and then

(33:27):
a lot of that sudden trash afterOld Stonewall, maybe because old Stonewall Jackson
was trash himself, and League andall the rest of them read you two,
you're a low down lying yankee. No, no, I will boy

(33:52):
one less sidbusting. Wait a minute, not so fast. But the new
man shot him that that Willison.I'll be across the street and see you
didn't hear what they're arguing about. No, no, I hit only the
anger in the woods. Then Toryreach what he's gone, But the new

(34:15):
man is kick terrible quick home shot. Tory is dead. Mom shot,
poor man and poor missus. Toryand the children marrying you get ready,
I'll take you over to stay withher. I already tell her yo,
I see her, and it right, and Yanson on my way over.
I tell them too, and theyscared. They say they leave the valley

(34:37):
right now. Maybe they won't haveto, Shane go hitch up that wagon
going to town. Yes, no, Joe, I won't let Junior later
marrying. Somebody's got to go,maybe, but not now. No,
you can't go alone. The othersare all in this too. You said

(34:58):
so yourself, Joe, You Isaid you'd all have to act together,
rightchel, and you're for getting somethingelse quite Tory's funeral. First things ought
to come first, all right, first tories funeral, but after that,

(35:19):
after that chain, I'm making nopromises in a moment Act three of shame.
Make a friend and you make anally. There's a thought for you
to keep in mind, as manyanother American has. Since the end of

(35:39):
World War Two, many American citieshave adopted European ones, mainly through the
work of a citizen group in NewYork called Operation Democracy. One of the
greatest ties of friendship has been madebetween American cities and towns in Holland.
The people of the American cities supplytheir Dutch friends with clothing, food,

(36:00):
and during the floods early in nineteenfifty three. The Americans won the undying
gratitude of the Hollanders for their help. Several of the American communities have raised
money to send a community ambassador tovisit the European town they've adopted, and
the children keep up a two waycorrespondence. To date, several hundred towns
in the United States are in contactwith others overseas, and the number is

(36:22):
steadily increasing. These contacts include townsin thirteen European countries, as well as
Japan and Hawaii. Recently, threemore countries were added, Norway, Yugoslavia
and India, and arrangements have beenstarted to include Turkey, Spain, and
Peru. Americans in every walk oflife have done something to satisfy their desire

(36:45):
for international friendship, and you toocan learn as they did that by helping
others, you help your country. We pause now for station identification. The

(37:16):
