(01:07):
gentlemen, tonight we bring you thestory of a rifle, the perfect one
in a thousand Winchester, known asthe Winchester seventy three, so named because
it was perfected in the year eighteenseventy three. Now, just the story
of a gun could be dreadfully dull. It is, after all, an
inanimate object until it is taken upin on lawful hands and becomes a deadly
(01:33):
weapon. To day we guard againstthe uncontrolled use of firearms. But in
eighteen seventy three, when we wereintent on winning the West. A man's
life often depended upon his ability toshoot, and therefore his gun was his
most valuable possession. In Tonight's suspensefulstory, we have James Stewart and Stephen
McNally in their original roles and costarring in this outdoor drama from the vers

On International Studios. Is Lovely,Julia Adams, you know, I received
several letters lately from housewives who saythat when I first talked about New Lucks
with color freshener, they doubted luxflags could be improved upon, But now
that they've tried New Lucks, they'redelighted because they find that New Lucks really
(02:21):
does keep colors fresh and lovely longer. Now. Winchester seventy three, starring
James Stewart as Lynn McAdam, StephenMcNally as Dutch, and Julia Adams as
Lola. This is the story ofthe Winchester Rifle Model eighteen seventy three,
(02:52):
the gun that won the West.To cowman, outlaw, peace officer,
or soldier, the Winchester seventy three. He was a most treasured possession.
An Indian would sell his soul toown one. On July fourth, eighteen
seventy six, such a rifle cameto Dodge City, Kansas. It was
placed on exhibitions. Man, ohman, look at it, a Winchester
(03:15):
seventy three. What a gift tohave that rifle, one out of a
thousand, first one I've ever seen. But mister, that's our real gun.
Heredy took over a year to makeit. Yeah, give the first
one to President Green Sherby and gotcompany. When I went up long Well
and we had a lot of towns, what makes you think you'll be here?
(03:37):
You'll be here. We've been wrongbefore. You'll be here on account
of what we just saw in thestore window. He isn't here already that
rifle, Bragan, come on,let's find a place to board her horses.
The rifle wasn't for sale. Theywere going to stage of shooting contest,
the rifle going to the winner. But I never got to see who
(04:00):
won. All I got was aninvitation to leave town. Come on,
let's call, let me come on, Let's not have any fuss. You
just get aboard that stage. Call. I'm not going. You've got no
right to treat me like this. You can come back. It's just till
over the holiday. Why don't youpick on the gunslingers and the gamblers instead
(04:20):
of a girl trying to make anhonest living. And what about Steve?
If he comes to town and findsI'm gone, he's I will never to
catch up with me. Oh,please, something I can do for him,
ma'am? Huh, oh, strangerin town? Mister, that's right,
but I was talking to the lady. Don't you print about it,
Laura. Steve Miller comes along,I'll send him off, all right,
(04:41):
Ben, get that stage out ofhere. Well flanks anyway, mister.
Lola's all right, mister. It'sjust that some folks think the dance hall
girls might give the place a badname over the holiday. You and your
friend planning to stay for the shouldn'tmatch. We might. The dodge house
is about the best place in town, might be full up without putting the
(05:03):
word for here with g Well, might as well drop off your guns.
Let's have him drop off our guns, now wait on them. You must
have a real good reason to aska man to do a darned fool thing
like that. We don't allow anybodyto wear guns in Dark City. Hadn't
you boys noticed who's we? Ohdidn't I introduce myself? I keep forgetting
(05:27):
to wear that piece of tin.I got it on me somewhere in hold
on, gents, it's in oneof these parks. I should knew.
White headed somewhere is a man couldget himself killed hiding his badge like that.
Us marshall, huh, that's right. Wyat, oh wyat oh oh
(05:48):
oh yeah. I'll give him yourgun, high spade, small guns,
Virgil. Put them with the othersin my arfice. That's an awful lot
of law for one little cor town. This is the kind of a cowtown
that needs a lot alone. Nowyou boys want to sign up for the
rifle? True, just come alongwith me. Now all you have to
do. What's trouble stranger? Yousee a ghost? That's him Lynn going
(06:12):
in the saloon. Yeah, youwere right then, Only why would he
come here? And I told youthe rifle, the Winchester seventy three,
I knew he'd come. You wereyou know Dutch Henry. Oh, that
fellow just went in the saloon,Dutch Henry Brown. I know him.
What's your name? I'll need itto sign you up? All right?
If I use my own. Somefolks do. Lynn McAdam a friend,
(06:36):
Here's high spade, Frankie Wilson, high spade with a hyphen. That's what
I sit on when I get tired. Dutch Henry, a friend of yours.
High wouldn't exactly call it that. No, Oh, personal matter,
huh. I hope it can waittill you fellas leave town. It's waited
(06:56):
a long time, mister irpet canwait a little longer. Let's go.
That's fine. I'm planning on anice, quiet thought. The July.
Well, that was the beginning, and an awful lot happened before it all
ended. But now that I knowthe whole story, I guess I'm as
(07:19):
good as anyone to tell it.Anyway, that afternoon, the whole town
turned out for the shooting match.Wiat Herb told him a little more about
the prize they were shooting for.So it seems that when the Winchester people
are turning out these here rifles, every so one, maybe one doll out
(07:39):
of ten thousand, comes out justperfect. They've given it a name,
you call it one of a thousand. President Grant owns one of these rifles,
so does Buttle Bill Cody, andtoday, one of you boys are
going to walk out of here withthe finest repeating rifle in the entire world.
So take your positions on the fineline. This is shooting, mate,
(08:00):
She's ready to begin. Half anhour later, there were just two
men left in the contest, LynneMcCadam and Dutch. Henry Brown, even
widerup, said he'd never seen shootinghis fancies. He saw that afternoon and
when it was over he handed therifle to Lynn mccademy. You can take
(08:26):
your rifle now McAdam, or youcan wait till morning. Boys, you'd
like to engrave your name here onthe gun stock. Wow, that's real,
n I saw him. I appreciateit. Wait a minute, well,
Dutch, I just thought i'd askhow much he'd take for it.
It's not for sale. That's toobad. That's too much gun for a
man I have just for shooting rabbitsor for shooting man on the back.
(08:50):
Why. Yeah, like I saidbefore, a nice quiet fourth of July.
You know it looks like you andDutch here mine. I have learned
to shoot from the same man.Yeah. He taught quite a few folks
how to shoot. The only troublewas he taught them how He didn't teach
him what to shoot at. Maybehe figured a man should know that without
(09:11):
having to be told. Yeah, that was his big mistake. He lived
just long enough to find that out. That's all right with you, mister
Ripe. I'll pick up my gunat your office. You're pulling out of
town. That's right me. Wesleyand Wheeler, get your gear before you
go to the office. In theminute you pick up your guns, you
leave town. Oh sure, marshsure, that's the law. I guess
(09:33):
I won't have time for that andgrave and after all, even to get
the horses, high spade. I'llget the stuff out of the hotel just
a minute. This personal business betweenyou and Dutch Henry. I don't care
what you do to each other onceyou leave town. But there'll be no
gun fighting until you do. Isthat understood. It's understood. Come only,
let's get started, you all right, Lyn, Yeah, find out
where he put his horse right nextdoor as wells Fargo Correl. But don't
(09:56):
try anything here, not with earparound. You got to wait, Lan,
I can wait, I can wait. Dutch Henry wanted that Winchester seventy
three, real bad it wasn't hardgetting it either. He and his two
friends were waiting for Lynn when hewalked in his hotel room. Five minutes
(10:16):
later, Dutch was riding hard outof town and hanging from his saddle was
the Winchester seventy three. I don'tknow about you, Dutch. After two
days this saddle is pounding the backof my neck, and two more days
before we reached test Coosa. Youshore waker know what he's talking about.
He'd better know. My bank betterbe full of cash or a waker is
(10:39):
gonna be full of holes? Anythingelse eating you boys? Yeah? Our
guns still hanging on a wall back, and Dot said, hell, I
got all I want right here.Look over there more Indian smoke and back
of us too to or that saddleback? Can you read it? I
don't have to? And then smokemeans just one thing to me. Trouble,
(11:01):
Hey, Dutch, you think McAdamhas started after us? Yet?
Ah, that's hard to say.He took quite a bit and quite a
bit. What God's that seventy threegonna do? You that? In his
shelves. I'll get shells, plentyof shell in Tascosa. I thought,
I said, you knew you're doingthis country enough of it to know it's
full ending. Have I hear aricous place? Ricous hey, he's got
(11:22):
a treading post. Everything we needright now? Ricus got Yeah, but
how many miles away? If youshut your mouth and open your eyes,
you wouldn't ask so any stupid questions. Wailer, look Yonder's cotton woods.
You feel better now, we'll that'sricous place. Oh? Kind of lonely
(11:48):
around here, in't it? Ricer? Just you and mister Lamont. Everybody
else got skeered out by injins Dutchand a man saying I'm doing the same
as soon as they're getting a busyand his gun? And what might that
be? Mister Lamont, he's inplain sight, mister Brown, were there
on the counter, guns, riflesand ammunition against someone's engines and sailed anyone
(12:13):
who pays my price. Looks likeyou and your friends might have been in
durned city, left in a hurry. I could they are no guns?
Eh? I guess why? Up? Still emotional? That's right, So
we'll buy some of yours three sixguns and some forty four forty shots from
my winchester. How much three hundreddollars three hundred. Why a six con
(12:37):
cost twenty five dollars anywhere in theterritory. My price is three hundred.
Just a thief, we got eightytwo dollars. What ll it bring?
Nothing? You? You might awhen I look at your wind chest one
of the thousand man. Yes,that's a real fine rifle. Don't suppose
(13:01):
you want to sell. I'm buying, not selling. Maybe so, but
not for me. Your guns arefor sale. Who else is going to
buy him? Well, I'll behonest with you, mister Brown. I'm
waiting for young bull to send hisman here. What's a young bulldoing this
far north? I wouldn't know, but they all want to repeating rifle since
a little Bighorne, little big hornthe Sioux jumped cursed him, wiped them
(13:26):
all out. Yes, getting tobe mighty tough country to travel in without
a gun. I a young bullmight not show up, and you'd be
stuck with all those guns. Itcould be, mister Brown. That's why
I'm willing to give you three hundreddollars in gold for you winterestin, and
you can take your pick of thesix guns. Might even throw in fifty
(13:48):
rounds of shelves. I'm not threatening. You're talking like a fool that's giving
the Winchester. I said, nodeal, be smart half, how we're
going to get the guns? Allright? All right, you got a
deal. I thank you. Showthem the guns, mister ragm They can
take the picture this way, boysright over here, Winchester seventy three,

(14:13):
mister Brown or a man who wounds. Right down, Lamont and put up
your hands. Well we made adeal, did I don't deal with Indian
treaders? So back up, misterLamont. That gun in your belt,
I'll kill you. Shot a manin the back rack. I wouldn't be
(14:35):
the first you ought to know theguns in my belt. You hadn't order
tried that Dutch. You know.I run a decent place. M help
yourself to the bottle. One onthe horse before you leave. Who said
I was leaving? You're leaving?Better give them the rest of the shows,
mister Rage. They may need them. Later that night, Lamart left
(15:05):
Riker's place. He got word thatYoung Bull was ready to meet with him.
Now there's no point getting angry youngBull. I admit. The rifles
aren't Winchesters. But everyone's a repeaterand they'll all shoot true. You'll lie
rifles. You'll bring our old wornout They are not the guns of which
we spoke. If you want mygold, bring me the guns with which
(15:28):
crazy horse Nassum made their warter alittle big horn and you know about customer.
That is the gun I want, the one on your saddle. Well,
there isn't enough money in your wholetribe to buy that rifle. That
is the gun I want. Whenthe Indians rode away, the Winchester seventy
(15:54):
three had another new owner, YoungBulls. That same night, two more
riders. We're heading toward Riker's place, Lynn McAdam, and high speed.
Oh why don't you admitted, Lynn, you're about ready to fall out of
(16:15):

A few hours more or less ain'tgonna make any difference. We've been
chasing him since I can't remember.That's right, that's right, We've never
been this close before. We'll keepgoing to we hit Riker's place. So

(17:25):
I guess you remember how wid EARPhad invited me out of Dodge City
by stagecoach. In a way Iwas glad he had, because I'd met
up with Steve, the fellow Iwas waiting for at the first stop.
Steve hired a buckboard, hitched hishorse in back, and we started on
our way and it played up.Been there, wid EARP or no wid

It was then that I learned alittle more about Steve. Steve, what

and you better call the lady now. One went to sleep that night.
We just kept close to the fire, waiting, not knowing that the
Indians were driving two more white meninto the trol. You hear what I
(19:48):

wasn't smart. Yeah, I guessyou did. Now we're smack in the

been assigned a role in Shelley Window'snext picking excellent. Have you seen Shelley's
(44:22):
latest, The Raging Tide? Yes, and I loved it as much as
I did the book. Shelley playsthe hat check girl in love with a
racketeer and murderer, Richard County andStephen McNay as the homicide lieutenant assigned to
investigate Conte's crime. I understand Shelleygot so cold during the waterfront scenes and
The Raging Tide that she wore woolliesunder her costume. Oh that's a good
(44:45):
idea for those who live in coldclimates and like to wear glamorous clothes.
Of course, to keep woolen soft. There's nothing safer gentler than lucks.
I love Lucks for everything. MisterKennedy, from ski Woollies to Niland Slips

(46:23):
task Colcy to a saloon across frommy bank. He said he wanted to
hear me sing. The place wasempty except for the bargain lou Scott up
above me, the green grass onthe ground. I've been looking for something

sat there watching him, wondering whenI could make my break. But there
were two of his men on theporch, and there'd be more as soon
as the stage. But then thedoor swung open, and walking in were
Lynne McAdam and high sped hello again. Well hello nice people, seeing us

wasn't it very He was killed bythat A gentleman standing at the bar,
the one who's looking at us.Don't seem right for people to go
around kill's not people, He's WacoJohnny Dean. Linn didn't I could tell
(49:00):
us that Dutch was writing to meetto meet Waco Johnny Dean. Yeah,
you haven't got a chance. Don'tquarrel with him. I got no quarrel
with him. Watch him and watchhim. Excuse me. Yeah, I've
been riding to meet up with aman named a Dutch Henry Brown. I
(49:20):
was hoping to run into him herein Tascosa. Wouldn't happen to know him?
Would you? I might? Howlong you know him? I know
him long enough to tell you wherehe got that little scarb of his right
eye. I gave it to himwhen he was ten. Now you want

It all happened just the stage pulledup outside. But the driver heard
(50:05):
the shots and kept going. Isaw dutch Henry jump out. Lynne saw
him too. He started after him. There were more shots on the ice.
I didn't duck fast enough, Lula, where are you hit? My

get far. Take care of herhigh speed. Oh no, don't let
him go. Stop him if Iwanted. You don't understand. Dutch Henry's
a murderer, daughters Lynne. DutchHenry who killed his father. So it's
(50:31):
right for him to go. Doublyright because dutch Henry is Lynn's brother brother.
Now come on, let's see ifwe can find a doctor. Dutch
Henry had ridden off towards the hills, and the scabbard of his saddle was
the Winchester seventy three. Somewhere inthose hills, A score would be settled
(50:57):
once. Come on up, clean, Come on up and get me.
You're caught for loan of the man'sgun. The old man touch up better
than that, I guess I forgot, Matthew. You don't mind my calling
(51:17):
you Matthew A hope. I likeit better than Dutch Henry Brown. Come
on out and show yourself, Matthew. Mccada has a good sound to it.
I guess that's why the old mangave it to you. All.
I got yourself in trouble again.I can smoke you out of the rocks
easy. First chance, I hadto thank you for winning me my right.
(51:44):
Shoot's real pretty. What do yousay. I never got a chance
to use that gun, Matthew, but I intend to. Now there's something
you forgot too. The old mantold you never to waste lead. Now
you're short, not that short.Bload up fast, Matthew, I'm coming
(52:04):
up. The old man sighed twosons. One was no good, never
was any good. Robbed a bankstage coach. Then when he came home
and wanted to hide out. Theold man wouldn't go for it, so
(52:27):
Dutch shot him in the back. He'll be waiting for Lynne. He'll kill
Lynn too. Maybe maybe not?Well, Doc, this lady gonna be
all right. She'll have to wearthat armless ling for a while. You'll
be fine. And now, miss, if you don't mind it, hee?

Doesn't anybody ask me anything? Mhm oh oh yeah, we Lola,
