(00:38):
best from Hollywood. The makers ofHallmark Card bring you a true story from
the life of Wide Earth on theHallmark Hall of Fame. And here is

(01:11):
our distinguished host, Edward Arnold.Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and
welcome to the Hallmark Hall of Fame. Tonight. Our true story is transcribed
from the life of one of America'smost fabulous and courageous law enforcement officers,

(01:36):
the famous Marshall and Sheriff of theearly West. Wyad Up now wyad Up
was more than a Western gunslinger, more than a fast man on the drawer.
He was directly responsible, perhaps morethan any other person, for bringing
law and order to the West. And our story tonight will tell you how
it all began. Here is FrankUs as the Christmas season coaches, one

(02:00):
of the most enjoyable prospects is thesending of Hallmark Christmas cards, to be
chosen with pleasure and mailed with pride. For in Hallmark cards of any price,
you'll find me in herem quality andcraftsmanship you want in your personal greeting
to your friends, and the familiarhallmarking crown on the back of the card.
Chose two that you carry enough tosend the very best, And now

(02:23):
mister Arnold brings you our true storyfrom the life of Wyatt Earp on the
Hallmark Hall of Fame. Wyat Earthwas born on March the nineteenth, eighteen

(02:47):
forty eight, at mon month ofthe Man. In eighteen sixty four,
his family migrated further with and youngWyatt became first a stagecoach driver, then
part owner of a wagon freight, next to guide for a government surveying bother,
and finally, in the early eighteenseventies, a successful buffalo hunter.
One evening in the spring of eighteenseventy three, White and his partner Brad

(03:12):
Evan returned to their camp where theypegged out the skins from the day's kill
to drive Big Fellow with me,Yeah, skin like this might bring five
dollars bad. We ain't got morelike him. Oh we've done all right,
bred, Oh, sure we have. Cho we had not as good

(03:32):
as last year, though I've beendoing some figuring. We're everything about four
animals a day less. Let's goround for us. Next year will probably
be better, I expect. There'sup and downs in buffalo killing like everything
else. They won't be any nextyear, Brad leastways not for me.
Huh. Other herds are thun andout, and they're a lot harder to

(03:54):
find too. Next fall, mustof the hunters will lose money alfter that
well, won't be very long beforethe animals are as scarce as hens.
Tea. Oh they are always beBuffalo. Why why we've seen him to
the thousands. They couldn't just bewiped off the face of the earth,
no matter what. Maybe not Brandon, Maybe that's how I see it.

(04:16):
Well, if you ain't gonna Buffalo, what are you gonna do? No?
I don't know. Now, you'renot gonna do nothing fools like get
yourself married and start raising a family. I've been married. What Oh,
we weren't together very long? Therewas the typhus epidemic. Why I just

(04:46):
never thought that, Oh, don'tseem like the Marrian type to me.
I'm not not now anyhow. Youeverythink of going back to stage driving or
all. Oh that was all rightwhen I was a kid, before the
railroads came true. Now, butthe time we sell these skins are going

(05:08):
to be worth a couple of thousanddollars. Now, there's lots of money
being made in cattle these days.Folks driving a herds up from Texas,
Will you just take my advice andstay away from them Kansas cattle towns right
now? What do you mean youget mixed up with them cowboys and them
wide open bergs. The first thingyou know, you'll be using that six

(05:28):
gun you're. Oh, I'm notdenying that you're mighty handy with it.
If you ain't got the temperament tobe a gunfighter. Now, Brad,
I got no intention of being agun fighter. Will you get the hanging
out where they hang out, andit'll rub off? Sure as fate,
it'll rub off on you. Now, man's got to do something. He's
got to go somewhere. We don'thave to go to them Kansas cattle town

(05:51):
all right, Brad, Since it'sso concerned when I go east, I
won't wear my guns. I oughtto cut down much. Chances are getting
into trouble. Yeah, you willput him on fastness, mark my word.
While you'll put him on. Ashort time later, Wider drifted into

(06:17):
the town of Ellsworth, Kansas. At the time, Ellsworth was one of
the northern shipping centers for the Texascattle herds, and over one hundred and
fifty thousand head grazed on nearby prairieswhile awaiting shipment. Further east with the
cattle were a thousand impatients swaggering gunfeltedcowboys. On the afternoon of August eighteenth,

(06:38):
is Wiat slowly crossed the Plaza. He was met by Ben Thompson,
one of the leaders of the TexasContingent. Men, carried a loaded shotgun
and with him with some ten ortwelve commend me where you think you're gone

(06:59):
anywhere? I'm mind too, Yeah, well might be. We've got a
mind to tell you. Hey,it's wire, ain't wire, that's right.
Yeah, what you're doing around here, I'll just pass him through,
you know him, Ben, Yeah, he's a friend of mine. They'll

(07:23):
go ahead, wife, going aboutyour business. It's all right with me.
I didn't ask you whether it wasall right or not. Then I
don't know any reason one I shouldat doors closed for the day, mister

(07:53):
come back tomorrow. That's pretty earlyto be closing up to them. It's
my business. Ain't sure you mighttell me what's going on out there?
I just ask your friend Ben Thompson. I met up with Ben here and
the airplane cards with him, butdoesn't make him my friend. He said

(08:15):
you was I heard him say so. You didn't hear me say so?
You mean you ain't from pictures California? And I might have figured you wasn't.
No cowboys eat as how you werebear hipped sure to apologize for the
mistake. Mister herb wyat her Oh, my name's Bob. Ben shot the

(08:37):
sheriff or Ben's kid, brother Bill. There was an argument over at Brennan
Slow Thompson's and a father. Theywere playing poker with Sheriff Whitney tried to
quiet him and Bill Thompson cut himdown point blank. I ain't heard yet.
Where did Bill go? Oh?He high tailed it out of town.
Ben took a shotgun to cover him, and he's been standing out there

(09:00):
ever since they'ren somebody to go afterBill. Oh, them follows out there.
They're just looking for an excuse totree Elsworth, the way they've treed
all the other cartowns. He nevershould have put in that plate glass.
I noted one, I ordered it. Well, I guess I'll be moving
on. You got any special placeto go from? No, no special

(09:28):
place where if you'd like to earna little change, you can give me
a hand. Here I'm making upsome burying boxes. I'll pay you two
bits of box. All that soundslike a fair place. How many you
want? As many as you canmake the list pile of lumber gives out
anyway, you'll need them before theday's out. I tell you we will

(09:54):
need them. In just a moment, we'll bring you the second act of

(10:20):
the Hallmark Hall of Fame. Asyou know, Hallmark has always offered a
beautiful array of religious Christmas cards, and this year the collection is larger than
ever. As you will see whenyou visit one of the fine stores that
features Hallmark cards. Seeing this collectionis almost like visiting a gallery of religious
art. There are Hallmark Christmas cardswhich reproduce world famous religious paintings and there

(10:43):
are cards designed by modern day artistswho treat the subject of the First Christmas
with a freshness and simplicity that's inspiring. The messages, too, reflect this
mood of reverence. There are Hallmarkcards with a Christmas prayer inside, and
a whole series is that feature thestirring words of Doctor Norman Vincent Peel.
Doctor Peal has written these beautiful andinspiring Christmas messages exclusively for Hallmark cards,

(11:09):
and you will find his moving wordson each of the twelve Christmas cards contained
in the Hallmark Doctor Peel box,as well as on individual Hallmark Christmas cards.
And remember, as always, it'sHallmark Cards when you will carry enough
to send the very best. AndNow, Edward Arnold brings you the second
act of our true story from theLife of Wyatt Earth for the next time.

(11:41):

and a six gun expert. I'mnot gonna put up with this nonsense any
longer. Jack. Now you goout there and you lay down the log.
Why they shoot me down before Igot the moth open. A man
be plumb local to set a footoutside that door. I walked past Thompson

(12:30):
a little while ago. He didn'tbother me. Well, you ain't a
Deputy Marshall, that's true. I'mnot Jack. I'm tired of arguing with
and I'm tired of listening. Youwant to arrest Ben Thompson. Arrest him
yourself? All right, I guessI'll ask to I just don't seem to

ardor look out for the blank glass. I asked you to get away from
my window. Will you stop yammeringabout that, George, you could have
killed me just then if he don'twanted to. You do a lot of

(13:58):
talk, mister. That's about allanybody's doing, isn't. Who are you
anyway? Doesn't bystand him? Myname's wider, never heard of it,
but he knows. Ben Thompson stoodup to him too before you got here.
Jim stood up to him right outthere in the street. It's as
big as life. That's so.I guess he wasn't taking much of a

(14:20):
risk, seeing as how he ain'twearing a gun. I don't see where
your gun's been much of Jack. Now, just give them cowboys a few
hours to get some of the devilmentsout of their bones, and by morning
everything will be peaceful again. Maybe, but that won't stop him from killing
your next sheriff anytime they got amind too. How would you go about

(14:43):
stopping him? Hurt and arrest him? Or I'd kill him? Okay,
go ahead, what do you thinkyou're pulling, Jim? He ain't got
the right to arrest nobody. I'mthe deputy marshal. Oh you're fired more,
