Speaker 1 (00:19):
Who'd that to you? Everybody? Myself and ELIASA here for you.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Following week one in a game that hey, Revdomus, he
was right.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
We lost.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
But let me tell you, and I mean this sincerely,
and I think me and elast we're gonna go through
several different players topics, but I leave this game with
and I know it's gonna sound cliche after.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
A loss, but I do leave it with more positives
and negatives.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
There's some things that are problematic here, but I think
they're problematic of what do you see a lot of
young teams, not necessarily bad teams doing.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
We'll talk about the penalties thirteen that's clearly.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Too many, But as a team, I don't feel like
it was a bad game for a team that is,
whether they won't admit or not.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
In a rebuild, we'll.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Start, we'll do our quarter by quarter down since then
we'll go into our deeper breakdown. But Elias number one,
initial thoughts leaving it, are you more positive or more negative?
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Then we'll get to the deeper stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
I'm definitely more positive. We talked about I think I
think Ratlers.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Showed a lot of things.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Again, I love the way he operated the hurry up offense.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
That looks like two minute drill. I think that was
his best look on the field for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
It looks like the hurry up can be a legitimate
weapon for them this year. I hate the smallest wide
receiver corpse, and yet we did not push the ball
down the field more.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
It was very telling that the.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Game came down to a goal line, red zone situation
where you've got a bunch of six foot receivers on
the field. Juwan Johnson has to make that catch for
his quarterback on third down, but on the fourth down
play Listen Alive hasn't won many of those sideline balls
six foot in the end zone. That's not something he's
(02:05):
done in his three years here. The fact that he
was the intended receiver on that play. They have to
remake this receiver room in the offseason. They don't have
an alpha dog. They just have a bunch of number
two and number three receivers. It's very telling that Juwan
Johnson ended up being the leading guy because he's the
biggest target and rattler needs a bigger target. Love to
(02:27):
see the training wheels come off him a little bit.
I thought they asking the play in the pocket a
little bit more. He started using his legs later in
the game. That should be part of his game the
entire time. There were opportunities for him to run a
lot and make a difference there. I just, man, the
penalties are gonna kill you. Thirteen eighty nine and the
(02:51):
smallest receiver corps. I think that's gonna be a problem
all year.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
So my first half notes, I'm just gonna go and
combine the first half because I will say or Kellim
Moore first game as a head coach, Spencer Ratler, first
time with this offensive system and coach, I think there's
obviously going to be a good four or five game
stretch before we actually see everything they're going to do
and before they honestly find.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
What works for them.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Because you're practicing against yourself, you're not gonna learn as
much as you are going against an other team. So
there's opportunities here for growth for both Rattler and more
to work together and be better. And I said before
the show even started to you, I think a lot
of what Arizona does with Murray is how they should
allow Rattler to operate with a little bit more freedom.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Now, the difference is Murray's been the league for several years.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
He's multiple time Pro bowler, and while some people might
not have him as an operational quarterback in their view
or whatever, he's an established guy. You have a little
trust there. Rattler's got to build that. I think that
can come in time. My first half notes though, where
I really loved how poised and fresh the defense look.
I was shocked, but Cameron Jordan coming out looking ten
(03:55):
years younger. Now how long that lasts with a four
month season, we'll see, but if it helps you have
close games early on, I'm happy with it. I thought
tomorrow not his normal sideline the sidelines self again, he
is an aging VA, but looked very good. Especially seem
to be more contained to those A and B gaps,
which I kind of expected in Staley's role. Anyway, I
(04:16):
had a big issue with miss tackles. In fact, I
made a kind of sarcastic comment on X that it
was nice to see Justin Reid adopting New Orleans traditions
with those miss tackles.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
Bro Listen, we talked about it.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
This defense is depending on that strong safety to have
an impact. I did not see that from him this game.
I saw a lot. I saw him give up plays
to McBride, I saw the mistackles. He needed to step
up big this game.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
He did not like.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
He wasn't effective, and this defense requires him to be effective.
You can't misplays like that and then and have it
turn into I mean that ended up extending the drive
they scored off of that touchdown. It was plays like that,
the forty four yard play to McKinstry.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
We talked about that. Mckinstrey played better as the game
went on.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Give him that. I do not like that he does
not find the ball in phase. If a receiver stacks
him and gets on top of him, he does not
look back for the ball and he prefers to just
play the receiver's hands. But if the receiver has late hands,
he does not give himself a chance at all. That
is something that could be attacked as the season goes on.
But he did redeem himself. I did not see Justin
(05:35):
Reed do the same thing in that secondary.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Also want to throw out a shout out to both
Ak and Kendreck Miller, who I think in the first
half had some really nice runs. Obviously, Ak getting the
one thousand touchdown in the Superdome, which is pretty neat.
I mean, if it's going to go to somebody, why
not the best running back the team's ever had. But
other than that, there was a couple of things with
rattle there pros and cons. I think Rattler got better
as the game went on, which is a good I mean,
(06:00):
I actually loved how he operated the four and two
minute drill. And if I had to speak negatively to
the four and two minute drill in the first half,
I've got to do it to Kellen Moore. Why did
his first time out as a head coach not coming
to the second half. Why did he not operate the
clock better? That's an area that I don't throw on
a quarter especially a young quarterback who's not.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Even played a season in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
More has got to grow as a head coach, which
again it is his first time. I do think you
should allow a little bit of leeway for those both
of those guys to grow. In the offense. Rattler, look,
I love him in the scramble drill. His deep shots
got to be less Taysom Hill and more into the
accuracy side of things when he actually gets on the move,
(06:40):
and this has always been his thing, scramble drills, actual rollouts,
and even RPOs. The dude looks so good and kind
of like what you're saying. There's so much of an emphasis,
at least at the moment, to have him operate more traditionally,
and I think that holds.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Him back, right I the cuffs, man, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Take the handcuffs, take the third handcuffs. So let's ride
down and play. If you're gonna roll with him, yeah,
don't be passive with him.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
And Kellen Moore played a little bit more passive than
I've expected from him.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
The end of half situation was very passive.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
The inability to draw plays and attack down field consistently
very passive. A lot of things were drawn up short. Again,
Ratley did a very good job. I was worried about
him throwing passes over the middle. I was actually worried
he looked fine, that the passes weren't behind receivers.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Like talking about he looked fine.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
There wasn't enough pressure put on their dbs to say, hey,
we're going to test you.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
Guy review episode. We said they had the stress.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
I mean, if you're going to have this wide receiver
room that you brag about being smaller, but fast.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
It better stretched the field.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
Right.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
If you've got the Cooks, the Shaheed, the Olave, then
you need to be having twenty twenty five, thirty five
plus yard shots. You need to be running those seven
through nine routes. And they we're not targeting those.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Doesn't matter if they hit them, throw them, just throw
them like throw it and let them know, Hey, we're
not scared of y'all. We're going to attack you. You're
gonna have to play some deep balls. I didn't see
enough of that, and I think that ultimately limited the
ability for the offense to be more explosive. What set
(08:22):
this game apart was the Cardinals had more explosive plays.
Was That's literally it. They ended up having one or
two more explosive plays than we did, and that ultimately
led to them having the opportunity to score more. Got
to pick up the pace on being a little bit
more explosive, a little bit more aggressive. I also didn't
like that. I didn't like that Brandon Staley did a
(08:44):
lot of bluffing with the blitz. The blitz with Alonte
Taylor was timely, but I expected this defense to be
a little bit more aggressive then putting everybody at the
line and then dropping back. It gives me those Dennis
Allen vibes. You rush for your drop seven, and you rushed.
I don't think he rushed three, so that was good.
But if you're gonna drop that many guys in coverage,
(09:04):
I don't want to see anybody wide open on the plate.
If you if you're gonna have wide open people catching
the ball, you might as well send five or six.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Just send him. They're gonna catch the ball anyway.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Speaking of fy, I want to throw out a stat
for you. I love the stat. Great stat.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
I'm being very facetious.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Uh, guess who led the New Orleans Saints in past deflections?
Cam Jordan du Carl Granderson. But close and still the
same point we're making it, which I think Granderson did
good in the spot. But this goes back to Staley
needing to bring more actual rushers like Granderson. As you said,
it's probably your guy. There's time about being the top
rusher you're looking forward to. He had at least seven
(09:40):
snaps I counted in deep cover or mid coverage.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Grandison is also the best coverage player they have in
that area of the field, and last year he had
the highest coverage grade when he dropped in. He dropped
in the coverage maybe about twenty six twenty five times.
Last year for PFL he had a coverage grade above eighty.
He actually does it well.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
I don't mind.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
But at the same time, I think he's your best
pass rusher.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
And I'm over here like key moments, get him down
at the get him in there, because look, I think
Cam had a great game.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
But one thing that you can tell Cam cannot.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Do very well because he's two ninety and thirty four,
thirty five years old. He gets in space trying to
chase Murray. That's not his game. Anderson can do that.
He's much better at that quick contain because he's not
only younger, but lighter. And there are moments where I look,
I really do think Cam had a great game, and
I'm not trying to like twist us and I'm secretly
(10:31):
talking down on Cam.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
But there arenity, no, there are opportunities, no stop it,
stop it.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Cam had a great you are there's opportunities that Granerson
I think could have affected this game and helped those
corners who I really don't feel like are there yet.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
But they played it too safe.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
I'm already Charles it on that one.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
I don't a man.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
Again.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
I think the secondary is counting on McKinstry and read
to be pillars of that defense. And again McKinstry got better.
I would say his game was above average. I would
say Reid's game was below what I would have liked
to have seen from him. And so when you're depending
on those guys to play at a higher level, they
(11:24):
gotta they gotta bring it every play. Those are the
guys you expect to have the past deflextions rather than
Carl Grandison have the past deflexs.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
That's the guy you're.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Expecting to make the stop on third down on the
other teams opposing tight end, rather than completely whiffing and
allow him to get the first.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
Those are the plays that have to be made and
you expect.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
That's why you paid him, That's why you used him
for the draft pick that you got from Sean Payton.
Another thing, I'm not seeing it with Brazil still, bro
I'm I'm listen. I'm not seeing it with Brazil. I'm
not seeing him effect. He had a couple of good rushes,
but he listen to thirty two inch arms ain't working
for him in this scheme. He's not getting extension.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
He's getting round game. I think it's a problem.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
He looks better as more of a defensive end than
a tackle right now, so I think a situational Russia.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
But on I think Vernon Broughton takes somebody.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Spot before the season is because I didn't see enough
interior pressure to flush the quarterback to the edges more.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
This is what I was worried about with Breze, because
Brazie is a natural three tech in an even front.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
He fits there.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
I ain't see it then. I didn't see him as
a three tack. I saw him more as a five tech.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
I liked him last year three, but I don't feel
like he fits maybe as a five here.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
I don't really like.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
It as much because I do feel like there's just
better guys that can play that position in front of him.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
But I don't really love him on the interior.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
I do think he deserves credit for blocking the field
goal because that kept him in the game. There would
have been no two minute drive if it wasn't for that,
so due shout out the special teams. But at the
same time, you don't draft a guy in the first
round to block field goals.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
You block him to get sacks to stop runs.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
So and bverseill heavy one, call him Brazil or whatever.
Those were the two picks you used in the in
the Sean Payton trade, and they're looking very mid now.
This is the point I was making on the last show.
When you trading players for picks or picks for players,
the team that usually trades or gets the known come
(13:22):
out of the normally pans out. Because you're only trading
for guesswork, you gotta be able to hit.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
I listen, I need to see more interior rush.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
If you're gonna only rush the way he was rushing,
you gotta get the interior pressure.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
And I didn't see it. I was expecting to see.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Brazil winning these one on ones, which granted he didn't
win a lot of one on ones last year. A
lot of his sacks came on stunts where he just
came free and made the tackle.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
But he wasn't just beating guys one on one.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Go back and look at all of his sacks from
last year, and I guarantee you more of his sacks
than not were from him just coming free after being picked.
If someone else got picked and he got a wide
open set to the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
I'm not seeing it with him. We'll see you.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
As with every game, I will look forward to checking
out the all twenty two see what looks like. I
do agree that Brezie is not somebody who stood out
today one game. Not going to write anything scheme wise
or anything off yet, but there are definitely things that
we need to circle and say, hey, look at this now.
I want to get second half real quick so we
can wrap up the total numbers and then.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
Really give our thoughts. But thirteen pillonies to wrap the day.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Only eighty nine yards for thirteen pilonies, But it's more
of how they happened critical red zone.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
You went one to four. Obviously that's something that you're going.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Need to up and offensively five or fourteen on third down.
And again I think a lot of this is Look
if I'm just having to assign blame because I think
everybody wants to assign blame on something. I put more
of that on more than I do on Rattler or
Ak or a Lave. Just some of the play calls, like,
for example, the play where a Lave takes that massive
(14:58):
shot in the chest.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
I'm okay with that.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Play call, but not after three quarters of you shortening
the field and never stretching it. You've got to have
a pretty deep defense to pull that playoff. You didn't,
and you made Chris Olave look like Reggie Bush, which look,
I love Alava, but for a guy that's had several concussions,
you don't want him taking those type of hits. Thankfully,
it was a very clean hit. It very easily could
(15:21):
have been a not clean hit, and you just had
your number. Look, we will talk about him not being
an alpha all day long, but he's still your number
one receiver, and you almost lost him in week one
because I think the timing of some of those play
calls weren't good.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
That again, hopefully is something that more just and also
real quick. Gotta get shoutut to Godfather's support. In the channel,
says he.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Predicts the Saints going four more. Does not have the
resume to be a gifted head coach. You poor time management,
and o' lineman once again hurt. Look, man, what is
it with New Orleans not being able to keep ol
Liman healthy? Because Fuaga goes down in this game and
then you know his replacement who's been here ten days
gets a you know, a false start penalty, and that again,
(15:59):
if you're going to help out your young quarterback, it's
not by giving him first and fifteens and second and fifteen.
But more, I think is the key here. How does
more grow? Everybody gets focused on Ratler. Obviously we focused
on an all offseason. Who's going to have the quarterback?
It's gotta be more.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
I'm not worried about more, you know what, because that
Eagles offense started out slow last year. Do you remember
how that Eagles offense looked versus us.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
I'm not saying I'm worried.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
I'm saying, if something's got to improve, the main thing
is more. That's what takes its offensive score in twenty
five twenty eight points.
Speaker 4 (16:36):
I think, I think the offense will grow.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
I think number one, the pre snap penalties were probably
the biggest issue with them having struggling or struggling so
much on third down. Got to get the pre staff
stuff cleaned up. I think as he and Ratler grow together,
just like it took him and Jalen Hurts time to
grow because they I watched a bunch of data on
his offense.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
They were doing a lot of different.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Things early in the season that they were trying to
force and as he started to learn hurts and figure
out what worked, they scrapped a lot of stuff and
changed that offense as the season went on. I think
you'll see that same growth from the offense. But listen,
you need an alpha doll receiver. Got to clean up
the presetnap penalty. They need they lay or somebody to
(17:24):
come out and step up because there's not enough length
on the field. Again, you're getting paid a lot of money, Juwan,
you gotta make that catch for your quarterback.
Speaker 4 (17:32):
That throw was.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
That was a great throws. Much as you want to
talk about ratless hospital balls, that ball.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
That ball was a great throw.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
I was like I was here and all of a
sudden all you saw. All you saw was what the
hell just happened? How did the ball squirt out?
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Come on?
Speaker 4 (17:54):
Juwan, you got to make that catch.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Bro.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
I'll rewatch it.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
I haven't sinsed the game in it, but I think
it was your boy Boo the Baker who ripped it out.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
I still agreed. You want to hold on.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
I mean, you're you just got a contract extension. They're
paying you to be a top tight end. You gotta
catch that ball. I mean you, you're not paid to
get between the twenties. You're paid to score as a tight.
Speaker 4 (18:11):
End game on the line.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Bro, you listen, you either one of them guys or
you one of them guys. Yeah, that's the opportunity to
be one of them guys. And you showed us that
you want of them guys. Come on, Brown, like, I
need him to make that play. It's a young quarterback.
They talk about making it easy on him all week.
We gotta just make it easy on him. That was
(18:32):
an opportunity to bail your quarterback out. Make an amazing play,
and you let Budda Baker come in there and finish
the play to the ground. And I think the other
issues he double caught it. Look go back and look
at that play. He double cut that pass. It should
have been a clean catch hands with them, but the
ball bounced and he had to try to grab it again,
(18:54):
and I guess in that moment he wasn't able to
secure it the way.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
You gotta make that play. If you're gonna go up
and get you might as well make the catch.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
Agreed. You're gonna do all that. You gotta come down
with it.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
That's that is unronically like, how look, that might have
been the best throw Rattlers had since becoming a starter.
I mean honest, like, I know he's had something, He's
had some good deep balls everything, but in terms of
NFL level throws, being able to pinpoint a ball on
the hash line into the end zone, yeah.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
That was he made Like Rattler made one of them
guy throws in the moment, he just wasn't throwing to
one of them guys.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
So uh, it's I look and said this the very beginning,
and I actually ran a poll before the podcast started.
By the way, shout too by ziel Good. Appreciate you
didn't expect seem to be good right from the start.
At least we saw pauses. Agreed, And I also want
to throw out that forty six minutes ago, I started
a pole.
Speaker 1 (19:56):
We had about eighty people participate.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
I asked, are you happy with Spencer Ratler Kellam Moore
on offense in terms of the direction where they're moving?
Speaker 1 (20:02):
Sixty two percent of people said yes.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
And I have to say I'm in that crowd, Like
if we're talking about overall, I hate taking ls, but
this is a competitive team. I said it the first drive,
both offensive and defense. I've said, this team clearly can compete.
This is not a team that is lack of talent
is going to just lose games. They can win games.
It ain't all there right there. I really need to
(20:24):
see cleanup on the penalties, especially I'm not sold on
our two starting corners, but again, they're young.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
Growth might help that.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
Need to see the veteran like Eric Reid really step up,
especially since Honey Badger's not there. But all that aside,
you just lost a close game against a team who
might may be a playoff team. I know you're not
as big on them as others are, and honestly I'm
not either. I think most of that is the division
they're in is a very difficult division. But I love
(20:52):
the compete. I love that that was good. I mean,
you've got a game down to the wire. What more
can you ask for?
Speaker 4 (21:01):
It was there, the opportunity was there. You like to see.
Speaker 3 (21:07):
There were a lot of things that were good from
a lot of different players. You love seeing Cam Jordan
come out. The run defense. For the most part, outside
of like a couple of quirky plays, the run defense
looked well.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
I had that one play by Benson. You know that
one like fifty yarder. But yeah, and that happens if
you take that play away like Connor. We talked about
the importance of stopping Connor. Connor averaged three yards of
carry and it's not like he had four runs. I mean,
they did a good job containing him overall. Kyler Murray
was pretty contained. He did get thirty eight yards on
(21:42):
seven carries. But we've seen the Saints give up way
worse to running quarterbacks before.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
I mean, honestly, when I was looking, I was trying
to find a correlation. As I looked at his stats
last year.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
I was trying to find a correlation between him running
and then winning games. I couldn't find like a correlation.
So I was actually okay with them giving up some
yards to him.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
And Arizona only got five first.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
So listen, he gonna beat you sometimes, That's okay. They
did what they needed to do throughout the game.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
Outside of that big forty four forty two yard pass play,
they kept him throwing between the hashes.
Speaker 4 (22:21):
For the most part.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
He did not do a lot of attacking. He chose
a lot of short stuff. We missed tackles when we
didn't need to miss tackles. We gave up big plays
and we didn't need to give up big plays. We
missed the field goal at a key moment they were
like and then the penalties. This isn't a team with
a large margin for era. They have to play clean
(22:42):
week to week. The cleaner they play, the better of
a chance they give themselves. You can't go out there
and have that many penalties.
Speaker 4 (22:49):
If you look at just.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Quarterback play, I mean, outside of Ratler having to throw
the ball more later, he was on par with coler Art.
They they played a very similar game, the ring game,
very similar quote. They had fewer pendanties than us, more
explosive plays. They capitalized on all they opportunities. That was
the reason they won that game.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
We'll say we got a cople people in the Chad
Jayc's are gonna see says defense was trash and our
receivers can't catch. I agree with one of those points.
We have some issues with receivers, and I think most
of that is just them being small. And again I'm
not the biggest fan of that, but y'all know, if
you follow this channel, I love that traditional West Coast style.
I love big split. You know, split ends extraceivers and
they don't have that right now. But defensively, look, I
(23:34):
get it, there's definitely some issues. Mistackles already highlighter in
the show. Eliash just mentioned it, But you gave up
twenty points. If your defense average is giving up to
twenty points every game, you're gonna win most of your
games in the NFL. So, while I do agree that
the defense is flawed and needs some help, if you
can maintain the little things like overall, you look at
(23:55):
the last six drives Arizona had, I mean most of
all Arizona's drives are scoring came in the very beginning, right,
They had two straight touchdown drives and that was what
in the second quarter. You look at the last five
drives phil goal punt punt, miss phield goal punt.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
Right.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
So defense, I know everybody wants aggressive, and I agree
there are times they need to be more aggressive, But
baseline twenty points, if you could hold a team to that,
you have an opportunity to win every game in the NFL.
Now didn't work out today, but that there's still a
lot more positive on this defense then maybe some people
in the chat see so I felt like that needed
to be called out.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
That's overreaction. Trash is a little bit excessive. I could
agree with the with the trashiness of the receiver corps.
I just don't think that's gonna be conducive when you
have the type of quarterbacks that we have. They need
receivers with wide catch raids as they just do. But
on the defensive side of the ball, Nah, they just
they had a few whack moments, but they weren't trash overall.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
It's not even close to trash, but some whack moments.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Yeah, I mean, Granerson and Cam combined for three sacks.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
And look, I actually want to give a little bit
of a shout out to Pete Warner because he ends
up time for leading tackles today. And not that I
feel like he showed up as a stud, but he
showed as a player today that wasn't getting picked on.
And I know that might I know that might sound
as if it's a as a backhanded compliment, but Pete
Warner coming into this league number one, wanted to be
healthy obviously, was living kind of like in the shadow
(25:22):
of Davis. He came in and had a good game today.
You know, he had seven solo tackles. He had a
sack which was containment sack. He didn't go out there
and blitz, but he got a containment sack on Murray.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
Yeah. I think he had a good game. And it's
again it goes.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Back to the small problems create a big problem. If
you get guys like Warner who laid you know, the
guys who aren't necessarily seen at the top of the defense,
but they can all start having solid games. I think
that's kind of their key long term for this defense
under Staley to be successful. I agree with you with
McKinstry because he reminds me a lot of a man
that they let walk in. Paulson Adebo, who also love
(26:00):
to play hands, didn't like to get head around, but it.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
Could still be a very effective corner. So we'll see
where we end up.
Speaker 4 (26:08):
I need to see more from the secondary overall.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
I'm not ready to give Pete Warner all this type
of praise yet.
Speaker 4 (26:18):
One because I think this.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
Scheme makes it easier on the linebackers and coverage. They
don't ask him the player man the man. They asking
the drop back and keep everything in front of you.
Come up and make a tackle, which Pete Warner has
always been the most sound tackler, like he's a smothering tackler.
Speaker 4 (26:33):
He's pretty consistent.
Speaker 3 (26:35):
But I don't think this scheme asked him to necessarily
be the type of linebacker he needed to be in
Dennis Allen's scheme.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
So I do think the scheme makes it easier on him.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
But ye executed.
Speaker 4 (26:48):
Give props, Give give me problem, Give you you go
get on.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
To me about how I'm saying things about Cameron Jordan.
I gotta get onto you how you saying things about
Pete Warner did his job, did his john But hey, overall,
though I truly mean this, I leave this game with
some positives.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
Yeah, what girl, I.
Speaker 4 (27:13):
Do leave?
Speaker 1 (27:13):
This was a poblo. Win a couple more and chat.
I want to shout out t Rex as people said
this game would be a blowout. Look.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
National media just loves to trash on New Orleans, especially
when we're not seen as good, so that you're gonna
see a lot of that this year.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
It doesn't really matter who our opponent is.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
We mentioned this in the preview, how Spencer Rattler got
named the starter in Vegas. Win up the point to
six and a half from a three, just because you know,
New Orleans get used to that until New Orleans earns
their spot back on the top of this division, which
Atlanta lost today.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
So we did kind of halfway win.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
That's always a w You're going to see a lot
of that, Godfather says, Duce, give me your dispensary info.
Because Zona is the fourth best team with that division.
Murray was also six, supposedly going to be a long season. Look, man,
let me say this real quick. I don't do excuses.
If you step on the field, you play. I don't
care what you did. If you stepped on the field,
you put on a helmet, you did your chin strap.
(28:04):
I don't care if you had the flu, covid or
your knee was broken. If you ain't good, get off
the field. Let somebody else start.
Speaker 1 (28:10):
No excuses.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
So Murray through one hundred and fifty yards, and I
don't care if you had the flu, because fifteen years
from now, when you go back and look at the
box score, nobody's going to give a heck you had
the flu. Play the game, you step on the field,
you're one hundred percent. That's all there is to that.
As far as them being the fourth best team, in
the division.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
We'll see.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
Man. One thing about the NFL. Every year, somebody's gonna
go be terrible after they were just great. That's what
makes the NFL better than any other professional sports we
have in the US, because you have that any given
Sunday and any year, playoff.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Teams are going to go to suck.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
The teams that you thought were gonna be two and
fourteen or two and fifteen now making the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
That's what makes this league so much fun.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
I agree with him, I can't. I can't lie. I
agree with him. I was not.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
I looked at the stuff that I saw from preseason,
when I looked at that game versus Carolina, when I
that the offense as a hole in what they did,
I was not fearful of Arizona coming into this game.
Speaker 4 (29:06):
I wasn't. I thought it was a good opportunity to
get a win. I think we should have won.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Okay, but too many mistakes and not enough of the
guys that you were counting on showing up showing up
fair enough.
Speaker 4 (29:24):
Gotta do that. Next week he showed up a shop.
Rashid didn't show up.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Hey, And if I'm also one more thing second half,
I get it you were behind, but come on, New Orleans,
you weren't behind by that much. Man, you were high
by ten points. Where did Kendre Miller and a k go?
Speaker 4 (29:44):
That's facts. That was the one thing I asked.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
I was like, hey, be patient with the run game
because that defense that they run on, that they run
can be run on.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
Just be patient with it.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
It'll you'll get some three four yard carries here, two yard,
three yard, then noosers start turning into five to seven yards.
I needed to see Keller Moore.
Speaker 4 (30:04):
Be more patient with the run game.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
He made the adjustment that I that I did like
was please run out a shotgun and run some read option.
If you checked out my article that I posted around
my nine thirty, one of the key points was please
run out a shotgun.
Speaker 4 (30:17):
They can be had. Run game.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
You to move a sideways and they can be had
in the run game. We kind of got away from
it earlier than we should have. They kind of disappeared.
But Kendra showed up, Kamara showed up. Heck, even Devin
Neil had some four or five yard four yard runs here.
The offense could have leaned on the run game, I
think a little bit more.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
But again.
Speaker 3 (30:40):
The one thing you're gonna see consistently throughout this season
that wide receiver cord ain't gonna cut it.
Speaker 4 (30:46):
I promise you is that it's not gonna get better.
I guarantee you it's not.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
Gonna get better. You need you need, you need Vle
to step up. You're gonna need Ak and Kamara. Well,
you're gonna need Kamara and Kendre to continue playing with it.
And you're gonna have to have Jawan Juwan be more consistent.
Otherwise you're gonna have games. Will elive and Rashid are
(31:12):
not gonna catch very many passes.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
That's you. You're gonna run into that all season.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
Might have a game with five catches in fifty five yards,
then there's gonna be a game where it's like two
catches for twenty yards, or they'll get blanked out. Dad's
gonna be consistent for them. You got to remake that
receiver room in the offseason. You do, I'm sorry, not
gonna work real quick.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
Who haven't checked it out before, check out Saints football
talk dot com.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
That's where Elias is putting his articles this year. If
you go check them out, y'all.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
See it on the background right now if y'all are
watching this, but if you're listening after the fact, Saints
Football talk dot Com will have the podcast on there.
But also every article Alves is gonna put out. Some
of them will shorts. You can get it right in
during your breaking works the boss. Don't see you talk
about the water cooler. Be the smartest person there, or
just come on the show and hang out. Either way,
(32:01):
check out the sight, but agree with you. I will say,
hopefully more sees it when he does his tape review,
just as I expected outside, especially when THEO zone runs
for Ak.
Speaker 1 (32:12):
That's there. Please don't leave it next time. It's he
still got it.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
If you had any questions about Ak at this point
in his career, if he could still do it, he
can still do it. Feed him the ball and Kendre Miller.
Let me go ahead and shout out to you. Probably
will never watch this show, but doesn't matter. I'm so
glad you're healthy and that when you got your limited
opportunities today, you look good man. Whether it was special
teams running the ball. The only thing he needs to
add to his element is becoming a consistent, reliable receiver
(32:39):
out of the backfield.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
So he can truly be that third down you know,
slide in back.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
But both of those guys, it's a shame combined for
fifteen carries because they look so good today and with
the game being closed, there's no reason that they shouldn't
have been twenty plus. Yeah, they combined for fifteen carries,
which is why frustrated.
Speaker 5 (32:59):
No, no, no, you know why that's frustrating because when
I did the research and I looked at all of
those games play last night, I looked at the Panthers
and I looked at the games where their defense gave
up thirty or more points.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
Because, believe it or not, even though our defense was
trash last year, we only had two games of giving
up thirty points. That defense had five, And so all
the whole week, I was hearing about how tough this
defense is going to be. In every game that their
defense gave up thirty plus points, the opposing team ran
the ball seventeen or more times. The starting running back
(33:31):
had seventeen or more carries in every game.
Speaker 4 (33:34):
I wanted that to be a marker.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
I needed to see Ak have seventeen or more carris
and I wanted to see Spencer Rattler take off with
his legs at least five to seven times to supplement
that and then let Kendred get the rest of the opportunities.
I hate that we didn't get that many carries this game,
because there was opportunities there for that to be taken
advantage of it.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
Just for the analytics nerds that y'all know, New Orleans
did finish with twenty two total carries. We had Rattler
had four of those. It was sixteen by the way,
Kendre Miller had five. Alba Kamara had eleven, obviously too low,
and most of those coming in the.
Speaker 1 (34:07):
First half, which is too low. Why I'm frustrated.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
Now, Devin Neil did come in and get two, which
I guess in theory you could add to one of
those as in like Kendry Miller, but I don't think
it's the same. It has to specifically be Ak getting
at least fifteen carries and five receiving touches has always
kind of been my thing for him. They didn't hit
either one of those marks. He had two receiving targets
and he had eleven rushes. And I think, and I
(34:30):
said this in the preview, you need to rely on
Ak and he needs to have more touches in the
beginning of the year than less touches, so we can
see what his offense can really do.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
And as we talked about earlier, protecting your quarterback, so
and they did.
Speaker 4 (34:42):
A good job.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
I think I thought the protection was actually pretty clean.
Yeah for Ratler for most of the game.
Speaker 1 (34:49):
I had a couple of breakdowns.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
But I know a lot of people didn't like the
investment in office of mine, but listen, you had to
do it, especially after missing on Trevor Penny. I had
to continue to invest in the offensive line. You would
have liked to have gotten some playmakers there. Clearly they
do need playmakers, but the offensive line is gonna give
your best chance.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
The healthier they can get, the better of an opportunity
they'll have.
Speaker 3 (35:14):
But I thought they gave rat Love very good chance
this game, only one sack for six yards.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
I do want, like Norm, I don't shout out other
players because I loved Marvin Harrison Junior coming in. I
wish New Orleans would have picked him, but that's just
obviously not even in the realm of what was possible
at the time. With DA but very rarely because you'll
see people talk about at the beginning of the year, like, oh,
this player added ten to fifteen pounds of muscle. Usually
that's a bunch of hoky and crap and doesn't relate
(35:39):
into anything. Marvin Harrison, who did add that you could
tell because he bullied mckenstery on a couple of plays.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
Yeah, I mean, and when we talked about Nina, big guy.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
He's six' three and he's added in fifteen pounds of
muscle and clearly is maintained as. Athleticism, man he could
go off and have a thousand yard season this. Year
he looked good today For arizona and really made me
wish we had that type of. Player that's definitely an
area this offense is, missing and we'll see if they
can fill it. In, hey guys and, guys hope you
enjoyed the. Show we're gonna be doing a couple of
(36:10):
these during the. Week me and allowed to go back
watch on the, tape have a little bit of a
recap again here On, tuesday we'll talk about what we
saw that will preview the upcoming.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Game we're back on. Schedule hopefully you'll enjoying alias any last, Words.
Speaker 4 (36:24):
Yeah, man, y'all.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
CHECK i have THE pff grades up on the. Website
Thanks Football talk Dot. COM i have THE pff grades
up as soon as they come. OUT i am going
to watch the game. OVER i really am gonna probably
key On Justin reid just to get a good idea
of his. Play But i'm gonna watch the game over
come up with a, review very high on a couple.
Speaker 4 (36:45):
Of, players not so high on some. Others but how.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
About this said something?
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Different because we don't actually never do, THIS i got
an idea we'll do something. Different now we'll both watch offensive.
Defense but since you really want to tie Into Justin,
reid how about you focus. In i'm gonna give you
three PLAYERS i really want you to tell me about
Because i'm curious and get your perspective. On and then
you give me some offensive players you want me to
look at. It we'll come Back tuesday and we'll like
(37:10):
trade scout reports with each. Other we're going to watch it,
either so read BECAUSE i completely. AGREE i want your
thoughts on, McKinstry especially as he got to the late,
game and then your Boy brian BURSE i want TO
i want to see what you say when you watch the.
Speaker 1 (37:24):
Tape is it as you. Saw is it a little
bit different somewhere in? Between there's my three who you
got from.
Speaker 3 (37:29):
ME i probably have you look At i'd like to
have you see What olive did in the plays where
he wasn't being.
Speaker 4 (37:39):
Targeted was he getting open? CONSISTENTLY i need to get
a good look at one of the.
Speaker 3 (37:44):
OFFENSES i want to find out what happened with for
a while and and how he was looking before he went.
Out and, then, MAN i don't CAUSE i. WASN'T i
didn't think the offense was bad LIKE i, thought it
just wasn't aggressive enoughing we got away from the. Run
but nobody stood out as having like trash games to
me on. Offense SO i tell you, What just look
(38:06):
at Rating. Tim if you liked this decision making throughout the, game.
Speaker 2 (38:09):
YEAH i think If i'm gonna Do, ratler What i'll
look at is DID i see improvement with post snap?
Processing BECAUSE i know what he is as an escape
the pocket, Guy but, man if we can see a
jump and maybe that's an opportunity to open up that
middle of the field even, more because like you, said
he did have a very good game thrown over the
middle compared to some of his past.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
Games but, yeah far better than WHAT i.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
Thought the only the flip side IS i have to
say people didn't give Rad let enough credit for the
fact that people were looking for this jump in the second.
Year but it's also his first year and another, offense
and you have to factor that. In like he's learning
his second offense in two. Years it helps him kind
of get a grasp of different. Things but the leap
that everybody was expecting to see that they kind of
(38:54):
didn't feel like they saw likely had to be attributed
to him learning another. Offense SO i think he and come.
MORE i do Think keller needs to take the hand
cuts off of.
Speaker 2 (39:03):
Him, well we'll see y'all a couple of times this.
Week hope y'all enjoyed. It who That god, Blessed we'll
catch you in the next.
Speaker 1 (39:09):
One we're. Out m
