‘Women Of The Blues: A Coast-To-Coast Collection’ is curated by Lynn Orman Weiss, a photographer, broadcast journalist and founder of the Women of the Blues Foundation, is a tribute to the Queen of the Blues, Koko Taylor (September 28, 1928 – June 3, 2009). The show features over 80 photographs of ‘Blues Women’ of all ages and ethnic backgrounds who represent Blues styles ranging from Southern Soul Blues to Chicago Blues and Rock Blues. This traveling exhibition was created to honor these soulful singers of truth who embody the essence of the blues, the photographers who photograph them, and to perpetuate Blues culture for future generations of artists, fans and historians.
“I love photographing and collecting pictures of Blues women, recording their emotions, their beauty, and their visceral expressions exuding from their souls,” says exhibit curator, Lynn Orman Weiss. “When we get together at an awards show or festivals it is a great sisterhood. It is my vision that this exhibit captures the heart of the observer and gives them reason to find out more about these extraordinary performers.”
The voices of Blues women are strategic to the social landscape of our lives. Each singer is a unique artist reflecting her culture, community, and hometown. They transcend the sadness and challenges of life in a world of harsh realities through the healing power of music. Inspired by the Women’s Suffrage, Social Justice and Civil Rights movements, Lynn Orman Weiss invited photographers from around the world to share their poignant and powerful images of these extraordinary women. Photographed at festivals and venues across the nation including The Chicago Blues Festival, The Maui Sugar Mill club in Los Angeles, The Blues Cruise on the Caribbean, and The Briggs Farm Festival in Pennsylvania, they told their story of each artist as interpreted through their cameras.
