(00:01):
Welcome to Wichita on Weekend, theweekly public affairs program from iHeartRadio Wichita ninety
seven, ninety eight one O twoone, The Bull Channel nine six three
and all seven three. Our guestsare Megan Shapaw, public Information director from
the City of Andover, and andOver City Mayor Ronnie Price. Good to

(00:23):
have you both in the in theWichita Weekend studio today. And you were
here because at the end of themonth we got big dings in the City
of Andover. Greater and Over Daysare coming. Yes, we are so
excited for Greater and Over Days. It's our fifty sixth year anniversary, so
we've been doing this for a longtime. This year our theme is celebrating

(00:44):
our Heritage, so we're tying inthe Heritage, that building that everybody's seen
on the corner of Yorktown Road andKellogg So you've seen that, our mixed
use retail apartments, all that goingon. We're under construction still, but
we are kicking off some activities atthe Heritage on Thursday night, Okay,
so you can come and maybe geta preview of what you can expect to
see there. Exactly right, It'sall right. Now they're trying to get

(01:07):
the Plaza park together and it didn'tcome along as quickly as they wanted.
So there they still want to havea presence in the Greater and Over Days
celebration, and so they will havea ribbon cutting and maybe we'll get to
take a look at the statue that'sbeen in hiding. So there's a lot
of things going on there. There'llbe no retail open or anything like that.

(01:27):
Still major construction going on, butit's just another opportunity to let people
know that city. Big things arehappening in and Over, Exciting things are
happening in and Over. You've hada little quieter summer than past years.
This last summer. Did that allowyou guys to get caught up and work

(01:49):
ahead on some ideas that you have. Our city is doing really well recovering
from the tornado. A lot ofthe houses are rebuilt. There's some that
are still having issues, but butoverall it's amazing to turn around and the
way we've done it. We're stillmissing our lodge, but we're working on
that, trying to come up withthe money because obviously, uh price everything's

(02:13):
up. You have. The lodgeis a very important part of our or
amphitheater and all that that entails. So we'll get it going though, yes
you will, but it's much betterwhen when you don't have to rebuild.
So the Why is coming along prettygood. It looks like it would be
the middle of next year hopefully.Wow. Okay, the Why substained sustained

(02:35):
some pretty bad damage in that tornado. So that's a not a small task
to get that up and going now. And they've taken the climber out of
it and doing They're they're taking advantageof the opportunity to put things in that
weren't the Okay, you know thatputting things into more effective and more useful
to the people that venture in there. I think that is so great.

(02:55):
And uh, of course we're justscratching the preface of what's going to happen
at greater end over days, Likewe say, the visit at the Heritage
on Thursday, right, and thenFriday it starts kicking into high gear.
Yes, we have so many thingshappening Friday through Sunday back at Central Park.
So we have our carnival that comesout every year. We'll have pickleball

(03:17):
tournaments, cornhole tournaments, golf tournaments, We've also added in several new events
this year, so we've been busyplanning a art show where you can win
cash prizes open to twelve years andolder. So there'll be an art show
in the library with a reception onthat Friday night to check out the arts
who won the prizes. We're alsodoing a jeep night this year, which

(03:38):
is new, so bringing in jeepsfor people to check out. Oh wow.
Yeah, we've done a car showin the past, which we're going
to do our car show again, but in the evening it'll transition to a
jeep night. We'll have yard gameswith shills out there. They're coming out
and sponsoring. We'll have some photoopportunities. Of course, we'll have our
parade on Saturday, which is everybody'sfavorite. Fire Works that night, kids,

(04:00):
activities, just all kinds of newstuff. So we're excited. More
fun than you can shake a stick. McConnell Air Force basis and is going
to have to do the color guardat the front of the parade. I'm
very excited about that man. Tryingto get more us, more and over
more involved in McConnell and vice versa. Sure to build that relationship we have
so many of them living in townand it's something that I've I've just I've

(04:24):
become friends with Colonel Vogel that wejust left, and so we're working to
bring it all run together. Sogo on and to enjoy all this.
What's the best way to get outthere and say, hey, I want
to have some fun at Greater andOver? Yeah, what are we doing
here? Yeah? So we havebuttons and new this year, risk spands.
You can purchase either of those forjust three dollars now through September twenty

(04:47):
eight, So anytime those are justthree dollars. A portion of those proceeds
do go back to the and OverSenior Center, so we like to help,
you know, get back to ourcommunity. But you can purchase those
buttons or risbands in and Over ata variety of places including the Dylan's and
Over State Bank, the and OverLibrary, City Hall. So those are
available, and if you can't getthose before the actual event, we will

(05:10):
have them for sale for if justfive dollars, okay at Central Park on
gad So, well, considering allyou get for that button, that is
a teeny tiny investment and it's goingto such a great cause. And yeah,
and you. And here's the coolthing. You don't have to be
an andover resident to come out andhave a great time at a gad and
the and the button gets all accessto everything except for the carnival rides.

(05:32):
So it's a big deal. Okay, And I think you did you mention
a disc golf? Is there goingto be a tournament this year? There
is a disc golf. Yeah, there's a few things that you do have
to sign up for. So ifyou go to andover ks dot com slash
recreation, that's where you can signup for our disc golf tournament, our
golf tournament, pickleball tournament, whichthose have some extra fees. But like
Mayer said, there's a lot ofother things. Those kids activities, the

(05:54):
concert, fireworks, all kinds ofthings are included in that three dollar admission
price. So a family of four, you know, that's twelve bucks for
a day full of fun. Thatyeah, that is a weekend full of
fun. Yeah, really really huge. So if nothing else, you can
bring a fishing pole and sit andfish and watch people watch, you know,
so that's always funny. That's nota bad idea either for those like

(06:16):
me who are maybe not quite asmobile as I used to be. It's
good to sit there in one placeand see all the friendly, smiling faces,
and they'll there'll be a bunch because, like like we say so often
and over, it is a reallythriving community. It's on the thrive if
you will, it's yep, it'son the up and up. And like
Mayer said, you can just PLoPyour chair down. We'll have some performances

(06:38):
going on on our Capitol Federal Amphitheaterstage throughout Friday night and throughout Saturday,
featuring some local performers. So that'llbe really cool. And if you have
never experienced live music in and overCentral Park at the cap fed Theater,
that is one of the finest.I mean, the whole system is top
notch, the stage is top notch. Even kind of quiet or more acoustic

(07:00):
acts get hurt. You can't missa beat. You hear it all and
oh it's just I get good. And it's it's for the young and the
old because if you if you're youknow, if you're a seventies child,
that's what it reminds you of sittingaround in the grass listening music. It
does having a cold beverage whatever, that might be and just enjoying it.
It just brings the family together andgood memories from when I was a child.

(07:21):
Yeah, me too. It's sucha such a gorgeous natural setting right
there. And and wow, ohwow. So as long as we have
good weather, right, long aswe have good weather. But you know
what, you guys have been livingright, I know. So it's just
a matter of coming on out andeverybody else coming on. But we're rain
or shine. We are rain orshine. Yep. We don't cancel.

(07:42):
We'll be doing it. And whatwe're going to hope that whatever precipitation needs
to happen between now and that happenslike in the next few days. And
if you're coming to the parade, you want to get there early because it
fills up, I mean for miles. It literally fills up up and down,
up and down and over road forfrom one end to the others.
So does it go through the wholecity of andover north to from the high

(08:03):
school to the the its off andover road in Central Avenue. So small
town parade. We have a bunchof floats and the school bands come through
and are marching and it's just likea nice hometown. Favorite kind of event.
You know, they're going to bethrowing little candies and stuff, Oh
boy, candies and all kinds ofneat stuff. You have necklaces and it's

(08:26):
not Marty Grob but it's and itactually starts about two blocks before north of
thirteenth and goes clear down to AndoverRoad. Okay, now you're talking.
So so it's a good lick. You know. The first year I ran
for mayor, uh, I walkedit in cowboy boots and blue jeans.
And I tell you what, bythe time I got done, there wasn't
much left in my cowboy But ohman, I'm bad. I'm bad.

(08:46):
Well, but I shook a lotof hands and met a lot of people.
And even to this day it's kindof cool because people come up,
so you shook my hand into parade. Of course that was four years ago,
so they remember, they remember. So and do you have all the
floats that you need for the parade? But you're still looking for floats?
Yeah, you can sign up,and again you don't have to be an
and Over resident to participate. Youcan sign up at andover ks dot com

(09:09):
slash recreation. So that's where alot of those sign ups are for the
five k run, the tournaments, the parade, all those kind of things.
The barbecue dinner. I don't knowif we mentioned that yet, but
that's at the Heritage on that Thursdaynight. You can purchase a ticket children
and adult tickets on that website fora barbecue dinner. Yeah, and over
and over ks dot org dot com, I'm sorry and over ks dot com

(09:33):
do not listen to me. Igot to get all my stuff together.
But yeah, it kind of enjoyedin its coat. It bigger every year,
and it's just a good time andlot's see a lot of good food
and beverages and so it's just agood time, a lot of friendly folks.
And you've got some fantastic sponsors linedup for this one too. Maybe
yes, we want to thank oursponsors as always. These are the people

(09:56):
who support the event in the community. Just to name a few, don
in and Over Rental Center and overState Bank, Capital, Federal Maritust Credit
Union, and the list goes on. The community just really gets behind this
event and supports the every year. And that's what makes it possible. What
is it about and over that peoplelove to support you Guys like they do.
That's a good question. They lackour amenities because you can come over

(10:18):
to Andover and it's gonna get Ourcity is gonna have so much more retail
and places to eat in the nextyear that that's the point. I want
people to be able to come overand spend a whole day just enjoy an
Andover. The heritage is set upto where you can set out front and
have a cup of coffee or maybea breakfast store outside out front of the

(10:41):
building. It's just a we're turninginto a We've added three more parks because
of the heritage. There linear parks, so it's a it's just a comfortable
place to be. That's a goodlooking community. It is better looking all
the time, not any worse forwear for the tornado, by golly,
the recovery has been fantastic. Soyeah, fort starbuck leverage. We hat

(11:03):
Starbucks coming in. We've hit thebig time. You know, So you
get a Starbucks or somebody, Iguess, I guess you've hit the like
you say, hit the big time. Well, you know, if you're
already in andover resident and your family'sin and over, you you've already well
aware of what a great community. It is, and we know we're going
to see out at Greater end OverDays. If you are just oh Wichiton,

(11:24):
maybe you live in one of thesurrounding communities on Wichita by all means,
come out to Greater end Over Daysgoing on like we say, Thursday
September eight through Sunday, October first, and to get tickets in Information and
over ks dot com yes slash dadgadad which stands for Greater and Over Days.

(11:46):
Yea. We are visiting with MayorRonnie Price and Public Information Director Megan
Shapaw. We're going to take aquick break and we'll come back. We'll
talk up a little bit more aboutGreater and Over Days in and Over in
general. This is which tall weekend. The landmark Wichita East High School Tower
at Douglas and Grove turns one hundredthis October. Maybe you went to school

(12:07):
there or know someone who did.Maybe yours is a multigenerational East High family,
or maybe you just drive by everyso often. You have a connection
to the city's original high school. And Saturday, October seventh, we're invited
to come celebrate one hundred years ofthe tower. We'll have a parade a
block party, food trucks, guestspeakers, school tours, and more.

(12:28):
Save the date Saturday, October seventhfor one hundred years of the Tower,
Wichita East, and we're back withAndover City Mayor Ronnie Price and Public Information
Director for the City of Andover MeghanShapaul, talking about the upcoming Greater and
Over Days. You're talking about abig community party September twenty eight through October

(12:50):
first. That is a Thursday throughSunday and Sunday October first is kind of
a special day for families, isn'tit, Megan. Yes, this is
our kind of a more low keyday where we will have touch of Truck
out there for kids. You cancheck out the Public Works Department, the
Streets Department, all of their cooltrucks. Check out what's going on with
those. We'll also have Generations Churchwill be out there. They'll have face

(13:11):
paintings, some activities for kids.Shields is coming out and they have more
activities and some swag to give out. Oh boy, we'll have some photo
ops again. Just cool things goingon all day from ten to four.
Food trucks again, so come onout. Buttons are three dollars now through
September twenty eighth. Okay, sothat Sunday is by no means a wine

(13:33):
down day. There's still plenty happening, just a little lower key, and
we don't have any fireworks on Sunday, right, No fireworks will stop the
carnival, and we're hoping to geta lot of those families out in the
morning to early afternoon. Wow andand over and Over Library would be having
an art show and they have anescape room and while you're there, stop
and play. The drums are outfront. They're really cool. Oh kids,

(13:56):
the kids really loving. They're broughtthey were brought in from across the
pond, and they're really special andfun to play with. So the end
Over Library is really always looking forways to uh better serve the community,
and they do a fablished. Comeon out, grab those drumsticks and beat
them hard there, make a lotof noise and just come out and enjoy.

(14:16):
What about this escape room? Haveyou guys ever done one of those?
I have done a few of them, and they're very fun. The
library, the end Over Library isa great partner of ours and they've done
a few escape rooms in the past, but they wanted to add something to
Greater and Over Days this year.So they're adding an escape room, which
will get some more information up onthat about signing up for a time slot.

(14:37):
But it should be really cool.So that's where they lock in there
and you've got to listen to cluesand figure out a way out. Right.
I don't know, I'd still bein my escape room if I'd ever
done, I'd still be working onWe'll see how many hard levels they have.
All right, escape room a wholeold Another thing comes to my mind,
So I don't I stay away fromhim? There you go, there,
you got all right? And allSunday a beautiful day to bring your

(15:01):
family out to Greater end Over Daysand check it out. Now the night
before, on Saturday night, we'vegot a concert, right we do.
Yes, we will be featuring BradyLee. He'll be taking the stage at
seven pm. So prior to that, we'll have our Chamber Ambassadors will be
doing a beer garden so you canpurchase a beer to go back to the
Chamber Ambassadors. We'll have the JeepNight going on at the same time again,

(15:24):
the carnival for the kids and theparents can come out and watch Brady
Lee and just sit back, andthen the evening will cap off with fireworks.
Oh and the concert is to beclear, it is part of your
greater Rush. So everything covered. The only thing that is not coverage is
you have to buy tickets for therides and soda pops and stuff out there.
So and man got to get someof those funnel cakes. Keeps kids

(15:46):
going, right, at least oneat least one per person, I think
traditionally right, yeah, and preferablysoaked in chocolate. The tornado took a
lot of the tree from us,but we've been relocating from the park that's
being built, so we're putting insome shade trees. So hopefully there'll be
plenty of places to get in outof the sun if if need be,
and if it's raining, you don'thave to worry about it. We'll just

(16:07):
have a good time. There yougo. By that time in September,
I'm thinking we should have temperatures downto kind of a reasonable level. I'm
predicting. I'm pretty optimistic. Igot my rose colored glasses on, but
I'm predicting highs in the seventies.Love it, perfect, couple of clouds,
nothing big. That sounds great, all right, let's put that out

(16:29):
to the universe. Okay, I'llwrite that down and see if I'm correct
on that. But anyway, byall means, if you want to learn
more about Greater and Over Days andactually the whole city of Andover, you
can go to andover ks dot com. But if you want to specifically hone
in on Greater Endover Days and overday and over ks dot com slash ga

(16:49):
d yep, our full schedule ofevents is there, so you can kind
of pick and shoes the button cellsthat do cover that Thursday through Sunday,
so it's the same button for fourdays of fun and you can see what
you want to do on Thursday,Friday, Saturday, Sunday and plan out
your whole schedule for that weekend. And if nothing else, you can just
bring your launch chair and blanket, come out, lay in the park and

(17:10):
relax and enjoy the enjoy the enjoythe company. And like you said,
yeah, kind of getting back tothe idea maybe bringing a fishing pole and
a yeah, a launch chair andpeople watching. And we do have a
fishing clinic, so even fishing clinicthere you go, fishing clinic, the
archery clinic, I mean we reallyhave something for everybody. I think you
got it all covered. All thatand pickleball, which I still haven't played,

(17:30):
but I'm really anxious to get outthere and try it. Yep,
I have not played either, butpickleball tournament. It looks like a good
hybrid between ping pong and tennis, kind of like standing on top of the
ping pong table. Yeah, thereyou go. So if I see it
with a racket in your hand,I'm gonna come and challenge you. Man.
Maybe you and I should be ateam, Maybe we should be there

(17:52):
you go, Right there you go, and over ks dot com, slash
g A D and Mayor Ronnie. There was one other thing I wanted to
ask you about, Well not justone, I mean there's a dozen other
things I want to ask you about. This is going to be a gigantic
weekend for the city of and Over, but there's also a side event that's
happening. I shouldn't say a sideevent, but another event that's not actually

(18:15):
connected with Great Over and Over Days, but something you're pretty passionate about.
Yeah, it's near and dear tomy heart. Freedom Hoofs Therapeutic Riding Center
FHTRC dot org. We'll be havingtheir Rodeo roundup where we showcase our our
our riders, what they learned todo in physical therapy on the horse and
what we're all about. And I'vebeen out there seven years. Uh uh.

(18:37):
We use horses for physical therapy. It's some called hypotherapy and it's a
real therapy. You can hold akid on a horse, or we do
anything from cerebral palsy, u MS, you name it, if it's if
it's a if it's a disease,we'll try to figure out how to get
you on a horse. And andit just changes kids' lives physically and italy,

(19:00):
and it just helps the whole familybecause you know, when you only
have one thing you get to do, it means something to you. So
we have once a year we havethe Rodeo Roundup and it's just a chance
to show how hard our riders workand how many great volunteers we have in
our organization. So FHTRC dot organd uh feel free to stop out there
and see what's going on. Allright, And did I hear you right?

(19:22):
Is there also going to be aparade in connection with that or a
procession of Sometimes no, but we'llhave games out there, probably snow cones
and uh, and what do youcall the other things? Uh, cotton
candy, cotton candy and games andstuff like that. So it's a it's
a it's a little it's a littlebitty rodeo. Okay, a little rodeo,

(19:44):
but with a big heart. Yeah, big heart. It means a
lot to us, So check itout. Like I said, I put
a lot of my time into it. It's not because I'm a good person
who's just gottam available. I don'tknow about that. I don't know about
that. It's a combination of both. Ronnie, give us that webs one
more time. It's f HTRC dotorg Freedom Hoofs Therapeutic Riding Center. Yeah,

(20:06):
fht RC dot org. And it'sinto Harry and Rock Road area at
d n J Ranch. You canfind it pretty easy on Google. All
right, Well there's a little messagewithin a message. Yeah, I appreciate
it, thanking and you bet anduh. Like we say, the last
weekend in September in the city ofAndover is just going to be a gigantic,

(20:27):
ongoing celebration for multi days and justa great time to come out and
get to know the city of Andover. If you haven't been, it's a
welcoming place and you have a greattime. Yes, we're excited as always.
It's just one of our favorite events. And we know that grandparents have
come out with their grandkids and youknow, all generations have been. It's

(20:47):
just part of everyone's lives and partof September every year. So there was
a there was a similar there. There was an inaugural Greater and Over Day
celebration fifty six years ago. Doyou think, yeah, I don't know,
Yeah, this is a fifty sixI don't know what it looked like
or how much was there, ifit was a full carnival or the parade.
I don't know all those details,but I know it's been going on

(21:07):
for yeah, fifty five years.Wow. And the Baptist Church at not
the Baptist Church at liob in Centralhave a really nice little deal for younger
kids, a little train ride typeof deals and stuff like that. So
it's a nice place you can taketo you three year old, four year
old, five year old, sixyear old. And there's more in their
in their neighborhood. So on theday of the parade, so they put

(21:30):
on a nice little event for thecity to end the citizens. Really.
Yeah, a lot of the businessesreally get behind the parade and Greater and
Over days as the whole. Soif some have specials going on, you
know during that day or during theparade, so it's cool. Just check
out. If you haven't been toand Over, you can check out some
of those strip malls and see what'sgoing on and just learn the town a

(21:51):
little bit more. Great shopping, great people, beautiful community and time well
spent. So just plan on bringingthe whole family to end Over on that
Saturday, the last September thirtieth, and load up on buttons and go spend
a day. You'll you won't regretit. You'll have a great time.
Like say, bring your appetite, your blanket and your lawn chair. There

(22:12):
you go, and it is onemore time. For those that are into
checking out this kind of thing. On the internet, you can go to
Andover ks dot com, slash gad. You'll find everything you need to know
yep, full schedule of events, everything you want to know and more.
Okay, if you see the mayor, feel free to shake his hand.

(22:33):
Okay, hello, say hello tothe mayor. Be friendly to the mayor,
he's available for photo ops. Allright, hey are you mayor?
Are you going to be the GrandMarshal of the parade. No, but
I'm first in line, I think. But in line you decided to how
big a trailer? I was actuallylooking for a hey monster to but they
don't exist no more. So we'retrailer behind a truck with my family and

(22:56):
grandchildren on it, and we'll beprobably checking some can and saying hello.
So all right, they won't letme off the trailer no more because I
can't keep up. Oh they don'tall really okay, Wow, they don't
even give you you to try askateboard or something. Oh no, no,
no, they definitely won't let meskateboard. I'm stick none of that.

(23:17):
I have to increase our insurance.Gonna be a great time. Please
take advantage of this and get toknow the great city of Vandover Andover ks
