(00:48):
tonight we're coming from Judges sixteen.Judges Chapter sixteen is where we're reading from.
One day, Solomon went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute.
He went in to spend the nightwith her. The people of Gaza were
(01:11):
told Samson is here, so theysurrounded the place and lay and wait for
him all night at the city gate. They made no move during the night,
saying at dawn we will kill him. But Samson lay there only until
the middle of the night. Thenhe got up and took hold of the
(01:34):
doors of the city gate together withthe two posts, and tore them loose,
bar and all. He lifted themto his shoulders and carried them to
the top of a hill that facesHebron. Some time later, he fell
in love with a woman in thevalley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
(01:57):
The rulers of the Philistines went toher and said, see if you
can lure him into showing you thesecret of his great strength and how we
can overpower him, so we maytie him up and subdue him. Each
one of us will give you elevenhundred shekels of silver. So Delilah said
(02:17):
to Samson, tell me the secretof your great strength and how you can
be tied up and subdued. Samsonanswered her, if anyone ties me with
seven fresh bowstrings that have not beendried, I'll become as weak as any
other man. Then the rulers ofthe Philistines brought her seven fresh bow strings
(02:40):
that had not been dried, andshe tied them. That tied him with
them. With men hidden in theroom, she called to him, Samson,
the Philistines are upon you. Buthe snapped the bow strings as easily
as a piece of string snaps whenit comes close to a flame, so
(03:01):
the secret of his strength was notdiscovered. Then Delilah said to Samson,
you have made a fool of me. You lied to me. Come now
tell me how you can be tied. He said, if anyone tries ties
me securely with new ropes that havenever been used I'll become as weak as
(03:23):
any other man. So Delilah tooknew ropes and tied him with them.
Then, with men hidden in theroom, she called to him, Samson,
the Philistines are upon you. Buthe snapped the ropes off his arms
as if they were threads. Delilahsthen said to Samson, all this time
(03:46):
you've been making a fool of meand lying to me. How can you
be tied? He replied, ifyou weave the seven braves braids of my
head into the fabric of the onthe loom and tighten it with a pin,
I'll become as weak as any otherman. So, while he was
sleeping, Delilah took the seven braidsof his head, wove them into fabric,
(04:13):
and tightened them with a pin.Again, she called to him,
Samson, the Philistines are upon you. He awoke from his sleep and pulled
up the pin and the loom withthe fabric. Then she said to him,
how can you say I love youwhen you won't confide in me.
(04:34):
This is the third time you havemade a fool of me and haven't told
me the secret of your great strength. With such nagging, and she prodded
him day after day until he wassick to death of it. So he
told her everything. No razor hasever been used on my head, he
(04:55):
said, because I have been aNazarite dedicated to God God from my mother's
womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me and I
would become as weak as any otherman. When Delilah saw that he had
told her everything, she sent wordto the rulers of the Philistines. Come
(05:15):
back once more. He has toldme everything. So the rulers of the
Philistines returned with the silver in theirhands. After putting him to sleep on
her lap, she called for someoneto shave off the seven braids of his
hair, and so began to subduehim under his strength, and his strength
(05:38):
left him. Then she called Samson, the Philistines are upon you. He
awoke from his sleep and thought,I'll go out as before and shake myself
free, But he did not knowthat the Lord had left him. Then
the Philistines seized him, gouged outhis eyes, and took him down to
(06:00):
Gaza, binding him with bronze shackles. They set him to grinding grain in
the prison, but the hair onhis head began to grow again. After
it had been shaved. Now therulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a
great sacrifice to the Goone, theirGod, and to celebrate, saying,
(06:23):
our God has delivered Samson, ourenemy, into our hands. When the
people saw him, they praised theirGod, saying, our God has delivered
our enemy into our hands, theone who laid waste our land and multiplied
our slain. While they were inhigh spirits, they shouted, bring out
(06:45):
Samson to entertain us. So theycalled Samson out of the prison, and
he performed for them. When theystood him among the pillars, Samson said
to the servant who held his hand, put me where I can feel the
pillars that support the temple, sothat I may lean against them. Now
(07:06):
the temple was crowded with men andwomen. All of the rulers of the
Philistines were there, and on theroof were about three thousand men and women
watching Samson perform. Then Samson prayedto the Lord, Sovereign, Lord,
remember me, Please, God,strengthen me just one more, and let
(07:29):
me, with one blow, getrevenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.
Then Samson reached towards the two centralpillars, on which the temple stood.
Bracing himself against them, his righthand on the one and his left
hand on the other. Samson said, let me die with the Philistines.
(07:51):
Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on all
the rulers and all the people init. Thus he called many more when
he died than when he lived. Then his brothers and his father's whole family
went down to get him. Theybrought him back and buried him between Zorah
(08:13):
and Essoul in the tomb of Manoah, his father. He had led Israel
for twenty years. Thank you fortuning in
