one of them being me of course? Oh man, if you've ever
seen that and have an encounter withthem, there's two very easy ways to

(03:07):
I had been dating the woman whowould be my future wife for about
nine months. During that time, our dates had been pluted, attending movies,
plays, concerts, to college footballgames, and college basketball games.
My wife wasn't a huge sports fan, don't like to attend all types of
(03:27):
events. Many times she found thepeople we interacted with more interesting or amusing
than the sporting event itself, butshe always seemed to have a good time.
On April twenty, nineteen seventy two, there was a professional wrestling event
at the Hammington Civic Center in Hammond, Indiana, a suburb of Chicago.
(03:52):
The double main event no disqualification chainmatches, where each wrestler had one of
their legs locked to the end ofa chain. Main event number one was
Dick the Bruiser versus black Jack Mulligan. Main event number two was Bobby Heenan,
(04:12):
the manager of the Blackjacks versus BillyRick Cloud. Although I had not
attended a wrestling event for several years. This had gotten a big build up
on TV and looked like it wouldbe interesting, so I asked my future
wife to go with me. Ididn't think about it at the time,
but the Hamlett Civic Center was nearthe elementary school where my future wife was
(04:36):
a second grade teacher. I'm notsure I told her what to expect at
the event. There were three climinarymatches prior to the two main events,
which didn't get too much heat. Were pretty straightforward. However, in the
first main event, Bobby Heenan helpedblack Jack Lonesa switched places with black Jack
(04:59):
mull again by pulling off his bootswitching the chain, which allowed the Blackjacks
to beat Dick the Bruiser, andthis got a tremendous amount of heat.
Then in the second main event,Bobby got a lot more heat and did
several more things to arouse the crowd, and the crowd really got into it,
(05:26):
and finally the fans started channing,we want blood, we want blood.
At this point, my future wifegot very nervous that she's never seen
a crowd get this agitated, andI probably didn't at the time know how
concerned she was because I was enjoyingthe event. However, Billy Redcloud proceeded
(05:46):
to really destroy Bobby Heat and thenBobby ended up a bloody mess, so
the fans went home happy. Iwas surprised as it in a dozen or
so wrestling matches I had attended overthe years, I'd never seen that much
heat. My date was really shockedat how aroused the crowd became not at
all comfortable in that setting. Tomake matters worse, when she went to
(06:12):
work the following week, several ofthe students at her grade school had been
at the wrestling event and saw herthere. The students saw that it was
really great that she apparently liked professionalwrestling and was there. However, she
was embarrassed as she did not thinkit was something that she should be associated
with it. It did not affectour relationship, as I proposed two months
(06:36):
later, and we were married sevenmonths after that. So this is actually
a two parter from a wrestling grandpa, not necessarily the wrestling grandpa wrestling grandpa,
And I'm going to stop it righthere and interject because the first part
of the story so much fun.Courting a lady back in the day at
the old Hammond Civic Center, aplace I'm very familiar with, right down
(06:58):
the street from me. Actually,I remember, in particular inviting my friend
Sam, who's a dentist. Hisbrother Jeremy is a chiropractor, and he
brought his now wife then just girlfriendto a Ring of Honor show that I
did in Chicago at the Windy CityFieldhouse in Humboldt Park, was a hip
area at the time, just seemedlike a regular wrestling show while I wrestled
(07:23):
Jimmy Jacobs in a Chicago street fightand I bled absolutely everywhere. Of course,
the wrestling fans loved it, butdid my chiropractor who was on a
date with his girlfriend love it.I'm always a little embarrassed kind of when
I see them. Not him,he gets the idea, but her,
(07:44):
just because I'm sure she had noclue what she was getting into, and
she's a doctor, he's a chiropractor. I think they're a little classier,
if you will. So when Itook the scissors out of the turnbuckle that
Jimmy Jacobs had tried to stab mewith and stay him with him, maybe
it wasn't her scene, but they'restill together, and you found the love
(08:05):
of your life, willing to acceptyour love of professional wrestling and all that
comes with it. There is anotherpart to this, and we'll start playing
it now. Obviously, I neverasked her to go to another wrestling events,
and kiddingly she would tell the storyto our three children of the night
at that wrestling event. When ourson was about ten, he became interrested
(08:30):
in wrestling. My wife had noobjection to my son and I attend wrestling
events from that time until he wentto college. We attended a number of
ww and WC live events in Chicagoarea, including SummerSlam ninety four in WrestleMania
fifteen. Unfortunately, my wife gotcancer and passed away fourteen years ago.
(08:56):
We were married for thirty five years, had a great married and I have
three wonderful children. Since then,my children have encouraged me to do the
things that make me happy. Morespecifically, my son told me that since
I enjoy wrestling, I should attendWrestleMania. I have attended WrestleMania thirty two,
(09:18):
thirty three, thirty four, andthirty five. Each time I had
a great time. I also discoveredWressel Khan when I went to WrestleMania thirty
three and visited it as well.Highlighting my visit to Wressel Khan was meeting
Bobby Heenan at this time. Bobbywas not in good health with I believed
throat cancer and was extremely difficult tounderstand. I told him the story of
(09:45):
attending his match at the HYMN CivicCenter. He was amused, seemed to
really like hearing about our experience. He immediately turned around and told his wife
about that event many years earlier, luci to better understand his speech. At
that time. He really seemed happythat I'd come by and autographed a photo
(10:09):
which I still a half. Sothat was one call, one nice long
call, and really had two verydifferent stories within one giant story. And
this is great. He told awhole narrative from the beginning to the end,
a perfect call. And I talkedabout the first half with his wife
going to the wrestling show, andhere's the second half being widowed and the
(10:31):
encouragement of his kids to do whatyou love at any age. I think
this is a great lesson to telland to learn, hopefully for some.
And I love that for you.And I've done so many conventions and signed
so many autographs over the years, and it's wild to think about the things
that stick with me because I rememberthis exact wrestle kin outside in New Orleans.
(10:56):
It was one of the first bigwrestle con that high Spots went for.
I was like one of twenty wrestlersthere. I made so much money
that weekend. Now there's like onehundred and fifty and the money is very
dispersed, but that specific one,it was so awesome. My movie it
just came out. I was hustlingso hard. I also not only remember
(11:18):
Bobby Heenan being there, I rememberthe exact spot he was in, I
remember the way he talked, Iremember his wife being there, and this
caller. I also vividly remember beingblown away. And I hope you don't
take offense to this, but atthese conventions there's a certain demographic, and
(11:41):
you were just this sweet, nice, older gentleman. And I know it's
not fair to judge and just belike, what the fuck is this guy
doing here, but to hear youpraise me and tell me that you listen
to my podcast, and then mepicturing the people that listen to my podcast,
and then seeing you and picturing youless to my podcast brought me so
(12:01):
much joy. That's me personally, that's what you did for me. But
what you've done here for many istold a great story, painted a great
picture. We're all apologetic and sorrywhat happened to your wife. But I
love that you keep living your life, that you keep moving forward, the
relationship you have with your sons, the relationship your sons have with you,
and the idea that you said toyourself, I love wrestling. Why would
(12:24):
I stop loving wrestling? And youcontinue supporting and making wrestling a part of
your life. For that, You'reappreciated. Wrestling Anonymous, please hold for
sponsors. I was working at anMLW taping assisting the production team in New
(12:45):
York City, and in addition tothe young talent, there are a couple
legends hanging out there. There wasRobert Parker, Colonel Robert Parker from WCW
aka Robert Fuller, the legendary KevinSullivan, the Taskmaster was there in attendance.
Bruce Pritchard, the WWE producer andhead of Now I Guess talent and
just head of everything was there duringthe downtime right before the show. Some
(13:09):
of the wrestlers are warming up andgoing over their matches. I noticed that
Colonel Robert Parker's holding court among allthese legends, telling some great stories,
and I want to overhear everything Ican. At one point, though,
he goes, I'll tell you whatthese wrestless today, these young kids,
they don't know their history like theyshould, or like we had to know.
I bet you not one of themknows who spot Nick Monroe is.
(13:31):
And I overheard this, and Idon't know why I did this, because
this is so not like me.I don't like to speak. I will
only speak when spoken to. ButI couldn't help myself, so I stopped
and I said, mister Parker,I'm sorry, Colonel Parker, because you
know he's got ranked. I hadto correct myself. I said, Colonel,
I do in fact know who spotNick Monroe was? Sput Nick Monroe
(13:52):
was the man who ended segregation inaudiences at wrestling shows in Memphis, Tennessee.
And he said, well, I'llbe damn now, how do you
know who spot Nick Monroe was?I said, I learned about spot Nick
Monroe from two people from Jim Cornettand Cult Cabana. And there was a
brief look of shock on some ofthe people around the colonel, and I
(14:15):
took that as a sign that Ishould get going. Or maybe I said
too much, but I thought itwas so crazy. I couldn't help myself.
I just thought it was crazy thatI would learn the history of sput
Nick Monroe from two people who couldnot be more different in their philosophies and
ideologies about wrestling. And I guessit's because much like politics, wrestling makes
(14:35):
strange bedfellows. Hey, you sayingthat you don't like to talk, I'm
gonna call bullshit on that, becausewe've heard your voice before and what a
voice it is, and you're agreat talker, and you should continue talking.
B Yes, Jimmy and I arevery different in our views of wrestling,
but we come together on the loveof the history of professional wrestling.
(14:56):
And see, the history of professionalwrestling is what sput Nick Monroe is all
about. And of course I waitedto play this very phone call until I
put out all of the Pro WrestlingFringe episodes. They're all out right now
wherever you get your podcasts, absolutelyfree. It's called Pro Wrestling Fringe.
And one of the stories is aboutsput Nick Munroe helping to end segregation in
(15:20):
the Memphis wrestling territory. It's awonderful story. It makes me very proud
that you listen to it, youretain the information, and you were able
to be a part of a prowrestling history conversation with a legend like Colonel
Robert Parker, and that gives mea little bit of sense of pride.
You were able to hang because ofme. I was able to tell this
(15:41):
story. You could talk about dogLegs, the handicapped Japanese Professional Wrestling Company.
You could talk about Maurice Tiley, the other wrestler with Agramegley, besides
Andre the Giant. You could talkabout Giant Gonzalez. There's so much you
could talk about. But I'm gladPro Wrestling Fringe available wherever you get your
podcasts to Binge right now helped youout in that moment. Two thousand and
(16:07):
six, me and a few friendswent to ww raw House show and Spencer,
Iowa. Spencer, Iowa is nota very big town, probably about
ten thousand people. The arena wewent to price held about twenty five hundred
people. So this show was afew weeks before Rustlemania twenty two that was
headlined by Triple H and John Cena. So this night at the house show,
(16:33):
the headliner was John Cena versus Edgein a street fight. Me and
my friends were sitting on the floorand towards the end of the show,
I decided to go in a frontrow and hopefully get a five from John
Cena. Right before that could evenhappen, Edge was laying on the mat
selling his injuries when a drunk fanthrew a plastic beer ball and hit him
(16:53):
right in the eye. Before Iknew it, Edge got off the mat,
ran right past He all pissed offand ran after his fan. He
started to kick the shell of thefan, and next thing you know,
you see Edge cocked back his armto go punch the fan. Well security,
Edge Agan sit back before it wasescalated, and then the fan got
(17:15):
arrested. I mean, the wayyou tell it is so aggressive, and
it's hard to see that out ofEdge, somebody I know pretty well.
I feel that I feel he doesn'thave that side to him. So this
is a story told by a wrestlingfan. There's many sides to a story,
but this is the way that yousaw it. You saw it play
out, and I think a coupleof podcasts ago I was talking about wrestlers
(17:37):
fighting the fans, which I likedthe stories that are more intimate as opposed
to thousands of people seeing it andthis just being relayed from one person's perspective.
But they're still always kind of funas long as they don't involve me
or me getting hurt. Maybe somethingwas up his ass that day and he
was going to take it out onsomeone throwing a bottle at him, or
(17:59):
he was mad he almost got concussedwith a beer bottle from a drunk fan.
I get it, I get it. My friend co owned a local
branch of the NWA, which wasknown as the NWA Florida. He had
done a brief stint backstage with ECW. He was good friends with Danny Doring
(18:23):
from ECW and would bring him infor a lot of shows. If you
don't remember Danny Doring, he wasthe one at ECW shows that people would
chant dooring doing. Danny was actuallya really good guy and started hanging out
(18:45):
with us. The reason I knewJoey and Danny was because I did a
local theater shadow cast of the RockyHorror Picture Show on Saturday nights, and
Joey's wife was also in the cast. One night when Danny happened to be
in town for an NWA Florida show, he came to Rocky Horror Picture Show
(19:11):
and we used to do a thingwhere would introduce the virgins, which are
the first timers for Rocky Horror PicturesShow that have never been to the shadow
cast before we make them do somekind of wacky stunt and move on with
our night. Well, this night, we knew we had mister Doring.
We knew he'd be comfortable in hisskivvies as he usually was in the ring.
(19:37):
We had him stripped down to hiswhitey tidies, jump on a pole,
pretend it was a horse, andrun around the theater screaming yippie cowboy.
You know, I got to spendsome time with Jetty and Doring after
ECW went away, and these weresome wild nights. These two really took
(19:59):
it advantage of their life. Sowhen you told this story it was of
no surprise. It also dawned onme that this was just one of thousands
of nights for Danny Doring, likefor you, this was a crazy and
memorable and wild night for him,it was just another night of being a
gimmick at the time, of livingthis lifestyle of being charismatic, if you
(20:23):
will, outgoing wrestling, allowing himto have this persona or cockiness, and
I saw it firsthand. He tookadvantage of it, and on this night
he did the exact same thing. But it's always fun to hear about these
wrestlers in other scenarios or situations, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show is perfect.
So this is very out there,a different kind of a different kind
(20:45):
of thing going inviting the wrestlers theRocky Horror Picture Show, and of course
him milking it up because he's awrestler and that's what we do wrestling.
Anonymous, please hold for sponsors.I've been going to chakara shows for a
few years and decided to take mynephews with me, both eight year old
(21:07):
and six year old nephews, andmy four year old daughter got a little
jealous and wanted to come along too. I wasn't sure if she was ready
yet, but hey, you know, let's let's give it a shot.
It's chakara, it's for kids.It should be great. We get to
the show, definitely enjoy the firsthalf of the show and an intermission,
and all the wrestlers are around theringside area doing autographs and selling march as
(21:30):
usual. My daughter is notices thatthere is one of the rudos named Cobalt
who is a goblin of sorts, and he is waiting for her to come
over and see him. So she'svery intrigued. Sees the cool mask and
decides to come over towards his tableand he keeps on motioning her over with
(21:52):
his finger, just come on over, come on over, And as soon
as she gets really close, hebangs on the table and yells and just
scares the crap out of her.She comes running back to me, Craig,
I wanna go, I wanna go, I wanna go, And you
know, it takes me about fiveten minutes just to calm her down.
We're able to go through the restof the show. You know, she's
(22:15):
okay, she's enjoying it well whenmy nephew's had a great time. So
after the show, we know, get in the car and we're heading back
home, and you know, Iasked my nephews, you know, who's
their favorite that they saw on theshow that night, and of course you
to nobody's surprised. They both saidcoult Tabanna, who had an excellent match
ack Smister Touchdown that night. Andthen get over to my daughter. I
(22:37):
asked her, well, who isyour favorite wrestler and she says, oh,
I like Cobald, so yes,the goblin who scared the ever living
crap at her was her favorite wrestler. Ah. That was a fun part
of the story that I think wrappedup the whole story perfectly. I remember
that night, I remember that matchwith mister Touchdown. It was a fun
match. Those Tacar shows were sogreat, and yes, so great that
(22:59):
you could take your kids to him. You could be the cool uncle,
you could be the fun uncle. Those kids will remember that for the rest
of their lives. As you toldthat story, I was a little upset
with co Bolt, I'll be honest. I was like, why is he
scaring the kids like that? Idon't like this. I don't want I
don't want you to have a badexperience. I don't want your girl to
have a bad experience. But asa good storyteller, at the end,
(23:22):
my heart was a little better andI had changed my mind and now I'm
I'm very happy with Cobolt that hemade this memory for this girl so much
that he became her favorite wrestler becausehe scared the shit out of her.
Two years ago, my wife andI attend an indie show that was NXT
(23:44):
adjacent. They had NXT scouts thereall the time, They had an XT
talent featured on the cards frequently. Before the show, my wife sends a
message on Instagram to one of themain inventors saying, hey, we have
a little bit of a green waitingfor you outside if you want to smoke
at some point, and they respondcool, see you there. We go
(24:06):
to the show. There's two bigmain of vendors on the card, one
who just got signed to NXT buthasn't been announced yet, and the other
was not too far behind, stillnot signed and still kind of weighing their
options. We meet up with thiswrestler in the merch table at some point,
get to them the line say hey, we're parked right outside your door,
(24:27):
actually right behind you. We're aboutten feet away, so if you
want to pop out you know, some point, just let us know.
We'll meet you back there. Hegoes, great, we'll do it.
After the show sounds good. Showends, we're outside in the car,
prop open the door and say, hey, all right out here if you
want to, you know, doyour thing. He goes, oh cool,
(24:47):
comes out, hops in the backseat, all sweating in full gear,
and we start talking and we're justchief in a bowl along and suddenly Robbie
Brookside comes out the back door, and then so does an XT's latest acquisition
right behind him and the wrestler inour backs heats like, oh stop,
(25:07):
stop, put it down, putit down. Do you have a joint?
He goes, yeah, I justdon't want the lighter illuminating my face
with him outside and we're like,oh okay, so we light up a
joint hamp to him smoke. Everything'sfine. We ask him, hey,
what are you gonna do if youget signed? He's like, Oh,
I don't know. Maybe I'll juststart drinking or something, or maybe I'll
just you know, pay the weedtax as they call it. And we
(25:30):
just laugh about it. Shows overwe'd go our separate ways, you know.
Not too long later, he alsogets signed to an XT and this
indie promotion is back in our townand he's on the card and this is
one of his last shows before hegoes over to the FED. We meet
up with him again. We're like, hey, part two, I want
to go again, and he's like, hell yeah, let's do it.
(25:53):
Shows over this time. He's notas a discreet He's sitting out in the
parking lot with us standing in themiddle as all the cars are leaving,
passing around a fat fat joint fromfan to fan to fan to him to
fan to fan, not a carein the world, not caring who sees
(26:14):
him. He's already signed, he'sall good to go, and we were
all just kind of flabbergasted by hisparanoia prior to getting hired, to not
having a care in the world oncehe finally signed that dotted line. First
of all, I can only assumewho this was, but it's just an
assumption. This is anonymous, thename was redacted. We can either assume
(26:37):
or just wonder. But I dofind it weird in the change of attitude
and mentality. I almost feel itwould be the opposite beforehand. You don't
give a shit. While you're there, you do give a shit. So
very interesting that that's the case.I like the mentality of not giving a
shit, just be yourself, bethe best self that you could possibly be,
and if your workplace doesn't appreciate it, then go find a workplace that
(27:00):
does appreciate it. I think that'ssound advice. I would say, only
in wrestling, can you just instagramthe wrestlers and be like, I want
to get you I But I feelthat's probably in anything. I've never been
a part of the marijuana culture,so i don't know how it works.
I've been very adjacent to it.I've been around so many wrestlers that are
a part of it, and I'llhear the stories, but I'm just not
(27:22):
that deep into it that I realizeor understand how this works. But it
makes much sense. I love thatyou can not only bond over your love
of chiefing a bowl, but alsoprofessional wrestling and they all come together.
And I appreciate you sharing that storyof friendship and weed wrestling Anonymous. Please
