Speaker 1 (00:04):
Ex President of the Sons of Men, Matt Kintastic X
head Capo, Adam Booth X player, and forever a Union
legend Sebastian Latou. These may be exes, but they're the
experts when it comes to the Philadelphia Union.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
This is Exes in the U.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Welcome back everyone to episode number fourteen of Exes and
the U. We are back for another week where we're
recording a day late and a dollar short, but that
was with you can blame blame the hurricane on that one. Guys.
How you doing, Adam, Sebastian, how's your week?
Speaker 4 (00:42):
Not too bad? Not too bad? Happy to be back
in the saddle talking about the hottest team in MLS
right now?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Week's off MLS. Yeah you know, but yeah we will.
We will get back to get into that, I should say. So,
let's just dive right in Union versus Cruise Azol. Union
win with a tie, but lose the shootout, but still
win the bracket. Did I get that right?
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Yes?
Speaker 5 (01:14):
Okay, So they get a tie, which means they won
their poll, but they lost the shootout, which means Cruise
Azol advances and Tommy Wilson Charlotte has to stay home.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
So that's that's the uh, the crux of that. So
it's good for us number one on the pool we're
going to take going on Montreal. But physical game and
that ref had zero control over that match. I don't
know what was worse, the ref or the state of
the pitch, because the pitch looked torn up because we
(01:47):
had what five games within like seven or eight days
on that field. So I'm going to defer to Sebastian Latwo.
You were there. I was watching on my phone and
my TV for hotel room in Orlando. So what did
you think of, you know, the physicality of the game,
the field everything.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
No, I don't I don't think the field was in
a bad shape.
Speaker 6 (02:09):
I think the grand s keeper did a great job
with all the game happening, you know, in the past
few weeks on it.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
I think it was it was descent.
Speaker 6 (02:17):
I feel like, yes, the referee definitely was not at
the level of the intensity of the game, especially with
right away, you know, cruz Azul right away going to
the referee as soon as it was the first goal kick,
you know, asking Andre to hurry, which was already like annoying,
you know, to have them you know, be in the
(02:37):
face of the Ray, but yeah, he didn't got to
feel like respected by them, and every time he was
a cool found he was always like them kind of yapping,
even if it was a freaking for them or against
it was always something two or three player you know,
going to him. And then he started, you know, being
annoyed some of the Union players, and you saw especially
in the second half, like a few times, you know,
(02:58):
a little pushing, shoving and what everybody come to me
every time about US soccer player, you always like, you know,
dive and flip, which in this game was the case
for a few guys, you know, especially in CRUs as well,
thinking that they got hit in face or whatever. So yeah,
it was not a big you know with them into
the game, but it was kind of cool a to
see like all the fan of Krusasol being in the stands.
(03:21):
It was a different type of atmosphere and he was
he was kind of cool to be able to call
the game. It was maybe not the best game of
the Union, but it was kind of a good level
of play from Cusasu and they kind of show the
Union that they need to you know, still get better.
But they were able to come back in a tough
(03:41):
game to get to know the last goal at the
end and get the first place.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
You know, the job done for.
Speaker 6 (03:46):
Them because the pressure was on CRUs Azul and they
almost you know, got the good after the group stage
show like the gym, you know, after this past conference.
He would have loved to just eliminate them right away.
So it's not a team they have to go about,
because I think was what we still from. Cuzzus definitely
have a great team and they might probably go in
(04:06):
this competition.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Yeah, and funny thing I found out later was George
Camacho Peagrina was the ref. He wasn't even supposed to
be the ref. The ref that was the lead ref.
His flight got canceled because of the rain in Philadelphia,
so this guy thrown in. So he definitely wasn't supposed
to be the lead ref and he showed he should
(04:30):
not be the lead ref. Hopefully we don't have to
see him again. But Adam, your thoughts on the on the.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Match start to finish. You know, you saw kruz Azul's caliber.
You know how good they are as a team. They're
up near the top of LEGA at Meki, so you're
dealing with a team that is definitely, you know, worth
their weight in gold so far. So I was, you know,
I think a lot of times we don't see a
(04:57):
lot of the League of Mechi teams, so a lot
of guys are not really sure about the style or
the form for which these teams are coming into Philadelphia
in the League's Cup. I think your result here tremendous, honestly,
given the circumstances, because you know, with the way that
you've been playing recently, with how good this team is,
(05:18):
you know, the circumstances be what they are. You're definitely
playing an away game in Chester, you know, I think
to get a result out of this, you know, the perseverance,
you know, the ability to see gaz dag you know,
work a coal keeper. Towards the end, you didn't have that.
I mean, look, you got one shot on goal. It
(05:38):
went in, you know, and I think that's the beauty
and the curse of soccer. You got dominated in a
lot of ways in this game. Possession was not in
your favor. Kruzzell ended up with seventeen shot attempts, six
of them.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Got on goal.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
You know, you were you were out fouling them. You
got more yellow cards than them. It was a chippy game,
it was a rough game, and the result to me,
the result still. You know, you don't win the penalty kicks.
I will forever believe penalty kicks are the worst way
to decide anything in the history of mankind. But it
is what it is. You got the result that you
(06:12):
won it, you finish top of the group and you
move on. I think you take a lot of positive
out of this match. And I am satisfied from what
I saw. You know, I think there's some spots, but
I'm satisfied.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Yeah, like you said, you win the pool, you have
to be satisfied. And you know, they played union soccer.
They were pressing the whole time and you could see it.
At the second half the Zul was running out of
a little steam and it worked out in the Union's favor.
I'm gonna say a name, Adam and let me know,
Carlos or Thundy? Is he the most the face looking
(06:51):
player that was on Cruise Azul. I mean, every time
that guy's face popped up, I wanted to punch the screen.
I'm just insufferable.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
There's something about that style of soccer that, you know.
I think Sebo even mentioned it, like that's the style
of soccer people talk about when they say they hate soccer,
you know, like it's the style of soccer when they
when they put up the memes of a soccer player
rolling on the ground like they just got hit with
a sniper bullet even though they got gently touched, versus
(07:25):
the USA women's rugby team with bloodied faces and be
like sport versus sport. It's just it's a mockery of
what this is. And I mean, look, it happens in
the NBA to a lesser extent. I think it happens
in like in baseball. You know a lot of times
you're just when you're dealing with arguing with referees and
(07:45):
dealing with people who are in over their heads in
these situations. But I just it just is not an
attractive version of soccer watching players run up to the
referee forty seven times a game and be like I
was assaulted. Did you not see the assault? And like,
again me as a consumer of the product, I'm like,
I don't want to watch that. And it's it's very
(08:06):
frustrating at times to watch these matches because if the
referee loses control of the game. You know, it's going
to break down into one of these fast you know.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Yeah, and he scores the first golfers all so maybe
that just heightened my hatred for the man. But yeah,
he was he was something else as a as an
Argentinian star. I'm like, god, so Bashian, what did you
think of him?
Speaker 6 (08:30):
Yeah, he definitely ever faced him. Might want to slap,
that's for sure. But but it's he was just kind
of like a little how you could say, like the
he's a mochree. He was doing of the those the
fact that he knew he was doing like bad stuff,
and he was kind of a little smile about it,
you know, like and he just it's so annoying and
(08:51):
and it's how because and like you say, you know, Adam,
it's kind of like those game like especially in Mexico,
everything they play like that they just try to be
in the head of the guys or maybe mentally one
of the Union guys will have, you know, flip out
Gus that was closed. You know, we kind of like
head but a little bit but just got the yellowcut
for it. But it's how like they want to get
(09:11):
into you and those guys they are good, but oh.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
My god, how annoying it is. Yeah, I the same.
Speaker 6 (09:17):
I'm like, you know, I can't say the bad World
on the radio, but oh my god, how annoying he was. Yeah,
he was definitely he was good. You know, he's got
the first goal. He was a good player.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
But oh and I will say this, if he played
for the Union, we would probably love him.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
You know.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
The same time, I think he will still annoy some of.
Speaker 6 (09:37):
The you know, fans in the Union, probably the fact
that he always try, you know hard and kind of
be put full of himself.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
You know.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Sometimes I was never so proud of Martinez because he
didn't really get in any trouble. I was amazed. I
really thought he was going to get thrown out. It was.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
And you know the thing about it is it just
reminds me of like a like a Russell Westbrook or
you know, Draymond Green or Dylan Brooks, where you're just like,
you're too good to be this type of a player,
Like you have enough talent to just let your talent talk.
You don't have to be the chirpy, yappity, yappity guy
(10:15):
all the time. Just speak with your feet, my guy.
You know, you you're that good.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Yeah, Now the good thing Jim made some subs. Sam
came in for JR. A flock in for Bedoya, then
later on Bueno came in replaced him Bizo, and I
tell you what Sam might have been. I know guys
likes the hero of the game because he scored the goal,
but that doesn't happen without Sam's motor and his pressing.
I mean, I know people are probably like, oh, this
(10:42):
new guy hasn't done anything yet, he hasn't scored, but
every game he's been in, he's made an impact. So
I just wanted to get, you know, smash your he does.
He reminds me a lot of you when he doesn't
have the ball, very pesky around, chasing guys down to disrupt.
So I just want to get your thoughts on how
he came in and made almost an impact immediately.
Speaker 6 (11:04):
No, I mean, it's it's good to see him like
pressing like that, and you can see that he was
probably like tired because it's not easy to come in,
or he was kind of humid and playing a high
intensity against those guys. But at the end, I think, yeah,
he's pressing definitely help you to kind of get the
mistake from the back. Then Quinn you know kind of
got the ball and then you know, good cross and
a goal. But it starts, you know. I think when
(11:26):
you see Adeneern like being on the bench and you
just come in a team and you see a guy
like Barribo is still you know, play kind of like
a couple of games now for the team, but it's
not a lot, but still like you see the forward
like playing hard. I think it's a big difference that
we saw from let's say the past four game being
undefeated and the rest of kind of the season. It's
(11:48):
like we keep pressing until the eighty eight minutes when
we are down. You know, we kind of play high
and we win the ball, which we didn't really see
much of that like of this kind of playing together
defensively and the pressing.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
You know, it's it's.
Speaker 6 (12:05):
Kind of contagious when you see the guy and I
knew that when I play, when I play hard, I
know the guy behind me they need to make the effort.
Otherwise I'm like, kind of WTF. Guys like I'm running
for nothing. If I can do it, I know, yes,
sometimes I was doing too much because I.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Can maybe run more than other players.
Speaker 6 (12:23):
But if you feel like, okay, we can go I
got pushed or somebody in a year behind me go
I'm behind. You have to go one hundred percent. And
he definitely brought that. Since you arrive and yes you
even't maybe touch the ball on the goal, but he
was pressing probably three guys, like the first defender, then
the keepers, then the last defender. It did almost like
(12:43):
a sixty yard run to kind of press at the Muni.
I'm sure he was pretty much tired after the twenty
minute to play, but he did that, and it's it's
good to see that. It just doesn't contain himself to
be like, yeah, okay, it's the cub even if we win,
we are qualified.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
I don't need to run, not doing to do that,
but he does it.
Speaker 6 (13:01):
So it's a it's a good example for a lot
of young, you know, guys in the team because he's coming.
He improved himself in Sanuis. But now you need to, yeah,
like you said, show to the fans and the people.
Infidelia is all in and you know, it doesn't matter
if you score or not, it just can you get
an impact coming in to have the team's call good
And so far he has been doing it, and it.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Was that little run between him and Gaztag that I
wish I was either in the same stadium or same
room as Adam Booth because I would have liked to
see the Adam's reaction after that, because I'm sure there
was a lot of running around and screaming. Even if
you were in a church somewhere watching me on your phone,
I'm sure you were disrupting wherever you were.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
So look, it's it's fun when you get to see
the N one mixtape tour down on a soccer pitch,
you know, it's fun. Like, look, I love the fact
that there's only one recorded stat for Sammy during that game,
and it's one foul committed, and like that's you know,
sometimes you need that in a nine. You know, you
need a guy who's just gonna be there in the
end of the game and rough it up a little bit,
(14:02):
murk it up, get hold the ball up, you know,
And I think, look, this is you know, the difference
between him and Chris Donovan automatically just off the bat
is just he's a nine. Like there's guys who are
who are wings who can score. My favorite was pop
up a call I think he was great, but I'm
not necessarily asking him for hold up play. But sometimes
(14:23):
you just need a guy who's just gonna come in there, Sebo.
You'll love this name, Connor Casey. You know, one of
these guys just comes in there, messes up stuff, gets
ahead on a goal. You know that's gonna be the
kind of guy we needed. And another name, Corey Burke.
It's the same type of let me be big, let
me insert myself into this game, get my minutes, and
(14:45):
see what I can do. And I think that is
a huge part of what the Union have been lacking
this season. So this is this has been fun to
watch the last couple of games with.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Him, definitely, definitely. So we go to the shootout Gasdag
missus what is it in big games? Like he makes
he hits what twenty three penalty kicks in a row,
and then he slips against LAFC and he misses this one.
I'm going, what is going on with with Daniel and these?
And it's funny with Blake. You know, We've had two
(15:14):
or three backup goalies that I thought were really good
penalty kicks, but our all world goalie is like on
pks that's just how I feel. I could be very wrong.
I feel bad, you know, because Andre had a great game,
but when it comes to pks, you're like, I feel
like he just guesses like half a second too early
(15:34):
than what he should. I'm not I'm not a goalkeeper coach,
but that was that was what I thought. What did
you guys think about the penalty kicks? I don't even
know if I like it as a role for leagues
cup that it goes right to penalties.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
Go ahead of the I mean, look, I again, I
said it earlier. I think penalty kicks are the worst
way to decide anything on the planet Earth. And this
is as a fan of both the international team in
the Philadelphia Union. I think penalty kicks are stupid. So
I believe that you should play until you drop. But
that's just me. But look, I feel like eventually it's
(16:13):
like a weird thing because I still believe like there's
there's very few things that are more geared towards the
players succeeding than a penalty kick, Like it's not in
the goalies favor. As a former goalie, you are not
expected to save that goal, which is why it is
so crazy. Wing ged do because it is a combination
of you can guess right, you can exact right launch angle,
(16:37):
you can do everything perfectly, and it hits off your
fingertips and goes to upper ninety and you're just like, well,
what was I supposed to do? That the deck was
stacked against me. I can't leave my line until the
ball is kicked. All this stuff, so all that to
be said, I fuck, man, I hate that we decigned
championships with bi penalty kicks because it's just a crap shoot,
(16:57):
you know, a crap shoot that doesn't favor the defense
in any capacity. So my thoughts on on penalty kicks
in these particular penalty kicks are I'm sorry, guys, Daddy
can't figure it out in the County kick shootout. But
I can't really blame Blake for the freaking roulette wheel
that is talenty cks.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
And now I'm bringing him from somebody that benefited from
penalty kicks in his career.
Speaker 6 (17:21):
I mean, it's it's it's a fifty to fifty like
you never know, like Adam saying, it's just I feel,
guys that you always go first when we do like
those you know, team he came maybe he should go
second and soir and I don't know, maybe first is
not I like to go first as well like him,
because usually you want to put the team on a
on the right trail and you know kind of say, okay,
we have first to score. But he has been missing
(17:41):
like the past couple like doing the team. Maybe it
was less pressure since his go you know, the equals angle,
which was we wanted, you know, to get the first place.
But yeah, and then you know for Dre same was
it not too much pressure, you know, winning losing it
didn't really matter. And maybe he left a bit too early.
I don't know, he needed to get some training as
well doing this. But to get upon an adam, we're
(18:02):
going to put this on this podcast. Have a rule
like I would love to change soccer and it's eliminated
the picker and it and I will take it from
the hockey.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
You know, I like the hockey because you go three
b three.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
So in soccer, what I will say is like, you know, whatever,
we finish at eleven against eleven, and I will stay
right away. You start the extra time and it's ninety nine,
so two guys are to be out of the team, okay,
and what you do. It's every five minutes, the coaches
give a paper to the fourth referee without showing to
the other coach, and after five minutes there is no goal.
(18:38):
We take one player off the field, and you cannot
change the player. You know, the player is already decided
and the player come out. So now it's eighty eight,
then it's seventy seven, sixty six until whatever.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Who's go first?
Speaker 6 (18:49):
You know, yeah, And at the end it's like who
is the most physical, who have the most you know,
big athlete, who make the most subscision?
Speaker 2 (18:57):
Whatever? Win the game?
Speaker 6 (18:59):
And you need to be good about knowing. Do you
leave more defender? Do you live more attacker?
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Do you know?
Speaker 6 (19:04):
Do you play like a counter attack with just one
fast guy? You it's it'd be fair and I would
watch that. I'll be entertained. Every five minutes you make
a sub you know, I like it?
Speaker 3 (19:14):
But can the other teams choose the players? So like
Jim would choose the Cruisers player instead, Like he would
go to the ref and be like, I want number
nine off, or I want number.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
Because then he'd be like, I want the goalie off.
Speaker 6 (19:28):
Well, the goal the goalie that's no, exactly I mean,
you can't take your goalie off.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
If you do, you like that, Yeah, I think it'd
be it'd be fun, you know.
Speaker 6 (19:40):
And then it's good for the coach because it's like, okay,
I'm gonna make su because you saw like as would
make two subs as though those two guys that were.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Going to hit PK, but just one hit the PIK,
not the other guys.
Speaker 6 (19:49):
I don't know why he came on, you know, but yeah,
you make like the most physical guy you can of,
like I don't know, make a tactically change whatever you
want today. You need to know who is your most
physical who can run you know, sixty back sixty and
for a while, you know, not being upside, it could
it could be fun. So up on the pod, you know,
let's see if this will come one day. But I
(20:10):
you copies the hockey because I like to watch like
the extra time in hockey, because you go on Tuesdays
a winner, you go then to peak a shut out,
but you should keep going and and Tuesday is a.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Good for me.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
We are going to the rules Committee this offseason. We're
we're getting a meeting and we're we're gonna present this.
I love this idea, Paul.
Speaker 4 (20:29):
Don Garber, we had a million dollars. Look, you know
the best part about that is it's actually soccer that
is the decider of the game. It's not just an
arbitchair roulette wheel. It's actually people playing soccer to end
the game. Yeh know, it's crazy.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
You know, hey, guys, we'll just talk about that pro
Cruiss all crowd. I don't think anyone in this pod
was shocked that Union fans were outnumbered and out voiced.
And it happens with League's Cup all the time, especially
when you've got a league at a mex team coming
in where their fans don't get to see their team
all the time, so they're gonna make a Friday night
(21:07):
a Tuesday night. You know. It's like if you or
I Adam lived in Miami, we would make every time
the Sixers were playing the Heat or playing Inner Miami
or playing the Dolphins, because we want to see our
home team play. So I don't know why people were
so shocked or offended. Now, what I'm not sure about
was how so many of their fans got into the
(21:27):
River End, because even if they got tickets, security should
have put them in standing room only somewhere else. Now
it was raining. I'll tell you from experience. Other fans
will do this all the time. They'll put on a raincoat,
cover their opposing jersey and then take it off and
think they're all slick. And by that point security could
(21:47):
have been overwhelmed. Now the sons of men not being there,
that probably did a lot because we used to police that.
Adam will tell you as a capo or me sitting
in the stands as the front as the president, if
I saw somebody with that, I would tell security and
let them know. I think with less songs have been there,
more casual fans coming on a Friday night and all
(22:09):
those Zul fans, I just think security got overwhelmed. Sebastian,
what did you think about the pro Zol fans and
the noise in the stadium and the river end.
Speaker 6 (22:21):
I mean it just shows that CRUs As it's a
huge team in Mexico and there's fans you know, everywhere
in America for this team. I've been to the game,
you know this week Arsenal Liverpool and it was so
many Americans with jersey of Liverpool or Arsenaul in the stadium,
you know, and it was full of red jerseys. It
just showed too that there's a big following and people
(22:42):
can't go watch their favorite team. And it was the
case for Crustazol coming to Philadelphia. It's a chance for
any of those people who love Cruis Azul to just
come wat gam live, especially like at the beginning of
their seasons already started. You know, some new players, they're exciting,
you know, they want to like show their love for
their teams. They probably follows in their kids. So for me,
(23:06):
I have no problem. It's just like you want to
support your club. I think take example about what Cruise
As does to.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
Their own team.
Speaker 6 (23:16):
If the Union or the son of bands, you know,
because of the exertion, maybe some of them all their
tickets to some Cruise As a fan, who knows it
could be the possibility as well. Oh yeah, So like
I don't have any problem if they want to get mad,
but get mad of the people who don't show up
to the game, don't get mad of the cruise As
a fan, It's it's again the same thing. It's like
(23:37):
we always got mad about how they're in our section.
Show up to your section, then may be louder than them,
be like you know, is there be the true fan
and you're saying you are and you want to like
support the team. Like for nine minutes, like we heard
the you know, Mexican fan of Cruss almost being for
He was loud, and I really like the environment not
(24:00):
just in a Son of Bend section, it was everywhere
you know, around the stadium.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
So it's it's.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
Definitely true to the American you know fans and what
the need to keep you know, going, for them to
keep growing and keep being louder and keep being you know,
like more passionate about their own team and kind of
you see the passion about being an Eagles fan. You know,
sometimes it's even for me too much because there's like
(24:29):
a lot of like cursing around kids every thing when
you know, Eagles find out too crazy.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
But but sometime I love it. You know.
Speaker 6 (24:36):
It's just like you can see the real passion from
everybody who will bleed green, you know.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
But it's what happened for the CRUs fans.
Speaker 6 (24:43):
They are like the same ways and an Eagles fan
like in their passion to toward their team. So when
the game of the Union, no, I'm a busy as
they come because they love their team and they want
to see them play.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
It's the most important, Yeah, Adam. I mean, look, I'm
a seventy six Ers fan, as everyone knows. And during
the playoffs this year, during the playoffs this year, New
York came down and they I won't say completely took
over the stadium, but definitely made it almost a college
(25:17):
basketball like almost like the Palestra back in the day
with Big five basketball, like a split gym kind of atmosphere.
And a lot of factors go into that. The proximity
of New Yorkers to us is one of those. The
love that New Yorkers have for the Knicks, which is immense.
But I think the biggest thing and the thing that
trumps all of that is the fact that they can't
(25:41):
see the Knicks, but so often, you know, they forty
one games in Madison Square Garden in a city of
eight million people, with millions of people in the Tri
State area surrounding that alone who probably are Knicks fans.
A majority of those people are not going to get
in an MSG to see their team, but they can
possibly paid to see him in Philadelphia. It's the same
(26:02):
thing we're dealing with here. You're dealing with one of
the largest clubs in North America, not just in Mexico,
just as on the continent. You know, when we were
talking about Club America a couple of years ago, when
they came to Super U Park, Club America is the
most supported soccer club in the United States. A Mexican
(26:22):
club is the most by far, most supported soccer club
in the United States. You're dealing with an uphill battle
of being, you know, minor league baseball fans versus the
Yankees in terms of fandom, and you're going to have
Yankees fans in your house every single time they come
to town because that's just how the game's played. So look,
(26:44):
I'm not really offended by any of that. I think
in the defense of the Union fan, eight o'clock on
a Sunday, not the We're not used to that as fans.
You know, I went over to Italy. That's a much
more common occurrence, you know, an eight point thirty kickoff
with Milan versus Palermo. That's much more common than you
(27:06):
would see in the United States, especially on a Sunday.
So I think the American sensibility of a sports fan
may say they this isn't the vibe I'm going for.
Maybe they're just like I don't want to deal with
that many opposing fans, because let's face it, for the
most part, Union fans outside of when we played Red
Bull or DC or New York don't have the fans
(27:28):
in their gym. So maybe they're just like I don't
want to deal with the extras. There's a lot of
levels to it. Ultimately, happy for the Union making money
as much money as they make off of this, you know,
happy for the concession stands and gates and all of that.
I'm happy. And if any of these guys become partial
Union fans on the side, that's a bonus. But for
(27:50):
the most part, look, this is what the League Cup
is all about. Because if we did that exact same game,
and I hate to say, if it's the Open Cup
and we have that exact same game and it's the
Rochester Rhinos, we're not getting anybody in there new you know,
the deep fans of the Rochester Rhinos are not showing
up like that or whatever defunct PNFC Harrisburg City Islanders
(28:13):
or the Richmond Kickers. You know, this is when we
have to remember capitalism is very much a part of
our game. You know, making money is a big part
of this whole thing. This is the reason why owners invest,
It's the reason why sponsorships happen, is because money can
be made off of this and money was made off
(28:34):
of this game where that same amount of money was
not made when the udn't play Tarilott. And that's just
the point of it. You know, Look, these people want
to see their team. They're going to go see their team.
Speaker 3 (28:44):
Yeah, but now we might have to talk to Ali
because he was quoted by the great Jonathan Tannewald and
the Inquirer the River End is supposed to be fans
in our supporters group and it didn't feel that way.
I don't know what the case was, but as a player,
I think we'd like to see a little bit more
support there. Now. He did go on and almost mirrored
what you said, as he's got that little limited marketing
(29:07):
role with his new contract. And I think this is
a mission for the Union is to get those Cruiser
Zool fans or those Club America fans that are living
in the Tri State area to be like, wow, I
could watch live Sock or why don't I adopt my
adopt at hometown why don't I adopt this team and
come down to games more. I would love to see
(29:28):
that passion and energy from those fans, because if I
moved to Mexico City or I moved to London, I
would try to pick whatever team I was at just
so I could see some live sports. So hopefully the
Union and marketing can can do a little bit more
recruitment to these fans, or just that they finally drove
down to Chester and went, oh, that wasn't a bad
drive right off ninety five, easy parking, So maybe maybe
(29:50):
that will convert them. But I will tell you there's
a couple cruises ZUOL fans that we don't want. Adam,
I'm assuming you saw the Damien was racially abused by
supporters during the Zoom match on good old Twitter, and
Union MLS and leagues couple publicly condemned the action. But
I don't know what's gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (30:11):
Nothing.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
Yeah, the one guy made is account private and the
other guy like shut it off or something.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
I know, like what?
Speaker 3 (30:20):
Nothing?
Speaker 4 (30:21):
Nothing? And the reason why nothing's gonna happen is why
would they put that much energy into going after a
couple of dudes on Instagram? They're not going to look man,
welcome to being black in sports. I like, I don't
know what else to tell you. We talked about this
a couple of weeks ago. Spain just won the Euros.
(30:41):
Guess how many times Nico Williams and Jamal were called
out specifically for being not Spaniards by actual Spanish people.
You know, every time France does something and they talk
about the origin stories of Killian and Bape or Anglocante
or any of these guys like they're just or or
how they're somehow less French because of it, or the
(31:03):
same way they do with Jana Santo Tompo. You know,
it's this perception of black athletes, and it's because it's
an easy target. It's it's the N word. It's calling
them a monkey, it's calling them all the racial abuses
in the world because historically, the whole globe has something
for us. Every part of the globe has a different
(31:25):
version of let me go get the black guy real quick.
So I'm like, look, man, Damien's felt it. I'm sure
Andre Blake has felt it. I'm sure you know. And
it's not even again, it's not just black players, Asian
players feel it. Yeah, you know Latino other latinos players
feel it, but it's just as a person, as a
(31:45):
person who again has experienced it himself playing soccer, playing
soccer and boarding schools in New England, I heard the
N word more times than I could count walk I mean,
but it's still sometimes bad. And that's what I'm saying, like,
so look, this is not me trying to sweep it
under the rug. I'm throwing my hands up because I'm like, yeah,
(32:07):
it happens. Someone's gonna make a statement. Then what like,
are we gonna docs the guys on Instagram? Are they
gonna lose their jobs from this? Are they gonna, you know,
have to pay a fine of some sort? Like what's
what's the actual repercussions of this other than we're aware
people mean to black people about being black when they're
(32:29):
upset with them.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
And it's funny. The players will go through so much worse.
And Sebastian can talk about this because he was in
the preseason. You were training players on what you could
say and can't say and everything, and the players pay
such a higher cost than fans. I mean, there should
be a way of figuring out somehow, maybe who this
guy is and be like, hey, you're banned from the stadium.
The stadium in the stadium. It can't be that difficult
(32:52):
to sleuth on the internet and find out. But like
you said, probably nothing will happen about it, Donald Sebastian,
you want to touch on it real quick.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
I mean, yeah, I mean, I'm with I'm with that, am.
Speaker 6 (33:01):
You know, there's a lot of stupidity, you know, like
it's easier to hide yourself, you know, behind the screen
and write stuff you know first as well, you know,
not not being you know, let's say, in front of
the person if you want to say something especially racist.
But you know, I'm sorry to still see you know.
And I was at the concert yesterday, you know, Zach Bryan,
(33:23):
And there's a lot of ignorant people out there, and
it's sad, you know, it's very sad to be in
a world like that that we are still talking about
the same thing over and over because some people are
not well educated and what they don't want to learn
because they believe it's it's right, and yeah, it's it's
just it's just sad, you know, to to see that
(33:44):
and always have the same story every week about it,
you know, it's there's nothing we can do to like
those people.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
You know, they are they are nobody.
Speaker 6 (33:53):
And it just they got their fame too for two
seconds because they say something racist to Demi Lo and
the and.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
How it is it probably like maybe happy about it.
I don't know. I don't even know it.
Speaker 6 (34:05):
Like it's just uh, I would want like, but for me,
it's like I prefer to ignore them, you know, and
uh and not talk about it because it's not what
it's all about.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
You know.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
They're looking for attention, and I wouldn't want to give
them attention. I wouldn't want to give their Instagram handles
attention or anything. Let's let's let's tune into something else.
So we've got Montreal on Friday night. Now, Adam, this
is the same day as Green Day, so I can't
go to this. I'm not selling my tickets. But I've
got the Green Day concert, which you know, if I
(34:35):
want to live a happy life, I go to Green Day,
not the Union game. You know, so got so thanks
a lot, Don for that domestic conundrum and you put
me through. But this is the third meeting between the
two teams this season. We had a two two drawl
at home with both teams going down to man, which
is almost like going through Sebastian's overtime rules. So they
(34:56):
were ten ten on ten and then Montreal scores three
three goals in the final minutes of the match to
go four two. A couple of weeks later, but you know,
that was June, and it feels like it's a whole
different team. And we also are going to get Nate
and Jack back. So what do you guys think about
Montreal Part three coming up? Yeah? Will you be there.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
Becting the game on the radio with Dave again. It's
gonna be fun.
Speaker 6 (35:26):
But now I love it just because first, you know, we,
like you said, we are almost like a full roster now,
so a lot of possibility for Jim to choose from
you know, the guy need to kind of push each
other to get now there starting you know, place in
the team. Then you have like Montreal, who we played twice,
didn't do very well against them at home and.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
A well losing you know, four to two.
Speaker 6 (35:49):
So I feel like, you know, being now four games
and defeated, you know, since we start winning in the
in the league and now you know, two games in
the ex Cup, one win.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
One tie.
Speaker 6 (35:59):
I think we need to keep, you know, playing the
same way, same intensity, and still have a little chip
on your shoulder, or the fact that kind of you
lose in Montreal four two when you should have not lost,
when you're winning two to one and you don't really
play the second half. They need to come out at
Montreal and kind of and say what's up, you know,
kind of the same way as they did against Charlotte.
Be strong, you know, defensively, and hopefully we can see
(36:22):
a game with the multiple goals you'll be I think
a fun game to do that. If everybody start playing
at the same levels and they've been playing us in
a couple of games, I think we should see hopefully
a Union win and a very cool game.
Speaker 3 (36:37):
I agree Adam thoughts on Montreal part three.
Speaker 4 (36:42):
When short an answer you were they're not better than you.
I don't know. I hate to conceptualize it in a
very simple term, but I think sad A touched on
everything of importance. But in the grand scheme, they're not
better than you. You're stronger. Now you should have some
confidence right now, you should know that this is a
(37:06):
very winnable game in a very winnable situation. And it
could lead to better things and possibilities that a lot
of us think they didn't think could possibly happen out this
season after the law. The last two weeks was our
two months were So take this opportunity, run into the
sun with it and get yourself a w against the
(37:26):
team that again is not better than you. It's it's
it's just not they're not better than you. And I
think at full strength you'll be able to show them
once what and again with renewed confidence.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
And I will be trying to check you in on
my phone during Billy Joe Armstrong's ripping guitar solos and everything.
Speaker 4 (37:47):
You're not making a bad choice, Matthew green Day is
an acceptable answer to why I didn't go to the
soccer match. Don't I'm here for that.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
Don't tell that to know one my season ticket rep.
He's harper and he didn't get my money.
Speaker 4 (38:01):
Noah's heartbroken. He's not going to the concert.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
Probably. So we've got some union news. The town hall
is planned for this Tuesday, the thirteenth. The email has
been sent, reservations made. It's going from six to eight pm.
You've got Jay Sugarman, Richard Leibovich Tim McDermott and Ernest
Tanner to answer your questions of about what's going on
(38:26):
with the team. I am. If I am in town,
I am planning on trying to sneak in just to
witness this, maybe get some snippets of a recording, because
I'm just gonna be fascinated by this whole thing. I
don't think Sale really cares that much about the town hall. No, yeah,
and Adam are are you gonna? Are you gonna go
(38:49):
with a megaphone and answer question as questions?
Speaker 4 (38:52):
I want to I want to go, But like in
the same way, I'm just like, why is he here,
like just in the back, very quietly, like making no
comments whatsoever, just taking like gonna be like Trent krem
and uh and Ted Lasso or I'm just sitting there
back with like gently skunked hair, just taking feverish notes
about how this is going down. Look, man, this is
(39:14):
gonna It's gonna be really funny if the Union start
like actually playing really well for a while and we're
still having this discussion, like that would be the most
hilarious thing, is that the Union just start playing well, yeah,
because then you're just like, well, what are we still
are we still yelling? How long are we gonna yell?
What are we yelling about now?
Speaker 2 (39:33):
Like?
Speaker 4 (39:33):
What is the point?
Speaker 3 (39:37):
It's dangerous and the fuel the yelling. We have a
new signing. Did you see the rumors that were published
at them?
Speaker 2 (39:45):
All? Right?
Speaker 4 (39:45):
So I saw the actual signing that's gonna happen, and
then I saw the Wikipedia wistful signing. I don't know
if you saw that one this morning.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
I glanced at that one. Yeah, so you can.
Speaker 4 (39:58):
You can lead off with that one, and then I'll
bring in the joke on because Pink.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
Danley, Jean Jacques Jaccuz, I'm not sure, but uh, Haitian player,
same team that we got Montero from. And you know,
the only rumor I'm going to say about this is
what do you think this means for brew Hoo? Because
I think El Brujo is l bye bye once this
guy comes in. That's uh, I'm gonna just say that's
(40:26):
what's that's my prediction. Uh, well educated, well versed prediction.
So uh and then adam any thoughts on that with
the Brewjo part, and then you can go with the
Wikipedia dream scenario.
Speaker 4 (40:42):
So I look, your team has really good parts like,
there's a lot of really good players on this roster
that would be very good in other places. I think
Julian Carranza was the first example of that. But Jose
Martinez has been probably the best person at his position
in this league for the last two to three years,
So it would be shocking to me if he wasn't
(41:04):
on the move or at least being looked at profusely.
I would suspect every big player on your roster is
probably getting someone kicking the tires at them at one
point or another. Hell, someone might even be s looking
for a Gleaznz or Elliott. You know, it's one of
these things where this whole when you're this league and
(41:25):
when you're this level of a team, be pay prayer
to lose your roster occasionally. That's just kind of how
this goes. You know, we're not quite the Tampa Bay
Rays of old, but you know, some guys are going
to say, hey, that uniont have a really good system
of finding diamonds under the rough. I wonder if they
want to make a little bit more money over here
in Europe real quick. And then yeah, that's kind of
(41:45):
how that happened. So and look, I think this is
good because I think if the fans complained about anything,
it was the fact that we knew Caranza was probably
gonna leave and we didn't have an immediate replacement for him.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
For that.
Speaker 4 (41:59):
I think it's the idea that if you're going to
sell these guys like you did with Paxton, like you
did with Brendan, like you did with Mark and all
of this, and you don't immediately show a high level
replacement or at least where that money is being spent
outside of maybe union yards, then I think they have
a I think that's where fans came into being like, well,
(42:22):
what did we are? We just going to be sellers
for forever? But I think this is good. I think
this is I think that's a good thing that if
we're going to sell Jose that at least have a
replacement in the waynes And but please don't hate me,
because I took six years of French and I think
I'm okay. But Adrian Robbo, excuse me, because there's a
(42:47):
it's a ot ending and I remember that you don't
renounce that it's a.
Speaker 2 (42:50):
Rebot a b'le.
Speaker 4 (42:58):
So he uh psg for the beginning part of his career,
was on loan for a year for Toululis and then
went to Juventus for the last five years. And apparently
some would put on his Wikipedia page that his next
career move will be the Philadelphia Union. It says twenty
(43:19):
twenty four dash whenever he's going to not be playing
for US, no appearances, no goals yet his future will
be in Chester, Pennsylvania. And let me say this that
if he can pull this off, I don't care what
Anton Greasonan is, who he was or whatever, this would
be the greatest signing in Union history. And of course
(43:40):
it's not happening. Are you kidding me? I just want
to know who got a handle of the Wikipedia page
and believe that this was the route they wanted to
take with their afternoon, because that's fun.
Speaker 3 (43:51):
Listen, they're manifesting it, Adam, and I believe in manifestation,
So good on them. They probably they finally used the
Internet for good, you know, So I'm happy with that. Now.
Congratulations to Union alumni. Brendan Aaronson got engaged to be married,
so she said yes to the rings, So congrats. Be
(44:13):
It just seems like yesterday you were like this little
seventeen year old kid coming on the field now, he's
all grown up. Now now in rumors to feed your rumors, Adam,
here's my conspiracy theory. Okay, Chelsea has joined the race
for Celtic midfielder midfielder Matt O'Reilly. Does this fuel that
(44:34):
Celtic will pay us good money for Gasdag?
Speaker 4 (44:37):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (44:38):
Okay, good, that's good. And now rumor number two, load
up on the pinchos, my guy, because rumors are that
hate and interest from rial. So seea dad for Jack McGlenn,
So he could be living in San Sebastian, eating pinchos,
just loving life in one of the most beautiful beach towns.
(45:00):
So yeah, there are the two rumors, Gazdag to Celtic
and uh Jack McGlen to Dad.
Speaker 4 (45:07):
I'll address both lightning quickly. One, if you're going to
go into a building bidding war with Chelsea, you're going
to lose. So if Chelsea actually won him versus Celtic,
they're going to get him because they have the most
first team signees in the entire Premier League right now.
I don't know if you know that there are forty
two people who are technically on Chelsea's first team right now.
Speaker 3 (45:28):
Is Chelsea's going to go up to fourteen million forms
so they'll have money to pay us for.
Speaker 4 (45:35):
Know, I'm here for it. I just I would hate
for him to have to go play on loan in
six different counties before he ever actually plays for Chelsea.
Speaker 3 (45:42):
Well, no, Gazdag would go to Celtic.
Speaker 4 (45:44):
Oh Celtic, yeah even so yeah, but yeah, I mean, look,
I mean good for Gazdag if that works out. Please
refreshment on the second rumor because I got distracted by
my own incompetence there.
Speaker 3 (45:57):
Jack McGlenn Chelsea, Dad, I think he would thrive in
La Liga SABA.
Speaker 4 (46:04):
You can correct me if I'm wrong. I felt Jack
would have been gone by now.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (46:11):
No, I think it's he should have played more, which
he did this year, but last year he played, but
you know, he was on and off. I think he
just needed to get a bit stronger in his game,
like physically, you know. I think it was something was
missing for probably for a few clubs to be really
really interested in him. But which what I think is
you show in the Olympics. You know, I think a
(46:33):
lot of people are probably watching and you see like
one of the great assists he did in one of
the games. He just kind of shows the quality of
passing years and then if he can learn now the
next step to a bigger club in Europe, I'm sure
it be the next step for him.
Speaker 2 (46:48):
Now.
Speaker 3 (46:49):
Yeah, and I mean the biggest knuckle Jack's always been defense, Right,
you don't have to play defense in La Liga. They
don't touch you.
Speaker 4 (46:57):
Now you gotta score fifteen goals a game. And Vivi
and h and mbape now. But but look, look, I
think that Jack is and we I mean when we
we always make this reference point. When we started this podcast,
everyone want was saying Jack McCann is going to be
the dude. That was four years ago.
Speaker 3 (47:17):
No no, no, no no, they were saying Aaronson was
going to be the dude. And the people told.
Speaker 4 (47:22):
Us watch was the was the one to watch. So yeah, look,
I think that Jack has been a really shining light.
I think he does stuff for us that you can
tell that he is built differently. You know, his passing
ability hit, the way he can pinpoint a pass for
his position is otherworldly. And you saw it. You know,
(47:43):
he brought it to the international stage in Paris, and
you know, even though the United States didn't progress like
we would would have hoped. You definitely saw his talent
on display. So yeah, I'm look. I I believe that
the Union have a lot more talent to give out
that's not named Cavin Sullivan. And uh, I think it's
(48:04):
gonna the fruits of the tree have been bearing, but
I think we're even gonna see more of it in
the in the future. And look, if he gets signed,
I hope you have a replacement waiting, and I'm sure
we do. But he deserves it. Kid works hard, kids
really really talented, and he's got a very bright future
ahead of him.
Speaker 3 (48:20):
Now we'll go through league's news real quick. L A
f C plays Austin on Wednesday today. Does your man
Olivier Jerroo make his debut?
Speaker 2 (48:32):
I always see I hope so yeah.
Speaker 4 (48:35):
I hope so too. I I don't like La f
seman Man. I love Olivia Drew. So well, here's good.
Speaker 3 (48:40):
Here's here's more reasons not to like la. The rumor
is La f cre And talks to sign let the
Goo Madrid star Hen von Griesman.
Speaker 4 (48:49):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (48:49):
And it's basically they're saying it's a when it's gonna
happen not if it's gonna happen, So they're just load
up on more people.
Speaker 4 (48:57):
So Sebastian, when did Los Angeles become a friends province?
Speaker 2 (49:02):
When Los Angeles began friends proments? Since maybe it's the
Latin left, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (49:08):
It's I it's literally like, did you win the World
Cup in twenty sixteen or do you want to come
over here? Or do you like do you want to
become twenty eighteen? Come over to La, have a good time.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
It's just La.
Speaker 6 (49:22):
It's a very attractive city for a Frenchman who doesn't
know nothing about the US. You know, it's the town.
You heard about it most of in the news. You know, Besidne,
New York or La. It's the two.
Speaker 2 (49:34):
And in La it's sunny and beautiful. So they want
to go there and they.
Speaker 3 (49:39):
Can afford the taxes there because they made their money
in Europe.
Speaker 2 (49:42):
You know.
Speaker 4 (49:44):
Look, I don't blame them one bit. It's just funny
because all these people who have a great affection for
like affinity arm like I love these guys and like
now I have to hate them gently. Like look, I
was a big Gareth Bale fan once upon a time.
Speaker 3 (49:56):
I can't stand that guy.
Speaker 4 (49:58):
Yeah, man, wow, that's change quick.
Speaker 2 (50:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
Now Charlotte FC acquired US men's national team defender Tim
Reen got him from Fulham, so he will be joining Charlotte.
And then the last thing I have about news is
Killian Embabe is about to become a new majority owner
of French second division. And I have no idea. I'd
have to have somebody else told me this name. But
(50:23):
he's buying a second division team in France while still playing.
I mean, good for him. Yeah, I don't know why
we're not investing in these teams.
Speaker 2 (50:34):
Is a teammate's name?
Speaker 3 (50:35):
kN oh Okay, thank you.
Speaker 2 (50:38):
You're welcome.
Speaker 4 (50:39):
That was what you were struggling with, Matthew well dot
con but it was like Dodd big.
Speaker 3 (50:48):
That's what I was struggling with, Adam the second word. Yeah, yeah,
so you know I didn't get seven years of French
like you did.
Speaker 4 (50:55):
Yeah, just here exactly what are we doing?
Speaker 3 (51:01):
So yeah, that's and you know we'll wrap it up
with no. The Olympics US men as we know lost.
Hopefully it's a game. You know, Nate can learn from
Ted Lasso and be a goldfish and forget about We've
got Spain versus France on Saturday for the gold for
the men, and the US women beat Germany one nil
(51:21):
and they play Brazil on Saturday for the gold. I
thought the Olympics have been highly entertaining despite the men's
team not doing as well. Just wanted to get your
thoughts on that real quick as we wrap this up.
Speaker 6 (51:33):
Oh for maybe a great WEEKENDNY friends and the US swing,
It would be fantastic.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
I'd be so happy.
Speaker 3 (51:38):
Yeah, and Adam, I'm assuming the same for you, being
a Frenchman.
Speaker 4 (51:41):
That you are French was Look, since Italy can't get
their shit together, absolutely, I'm sorry, thank you, but now
that's not said about this time. But yeah, look like
I'm happy for the French national team getting this stuff together.
I look grew up loving Tierry Henri, you know, so
happy for him in any success that he gets. And
(52:03):
I'm really excited for this women's national team. I think
Trinity ron Men's about to be a superstar. And that
goal she scored the other day was an absolute wonder
kin And look they are the US women have always
been our soccer darlings and if they can grab themselves
another gold medal, put it on the mantle. You know,
the rest of the world is definitely catching up to them,
(52:26):
but you can still like much like men's USA men's basketball,
it's you can still start your dominance when time comes.
So I'm happy to see that they're back competing for
a gold.
Speaker 3 (52:35):
Yeah, it's gonna be a fun weekend of Olympic soccer.
So and the only thing last thing I have on
news is the sons of Ben asked me to just
let y'all know they're having the second year I think
of their fantasy football league, American Football. So if you
want to join, they put it out on their socials
and you can get the link and play some fantasy football.
I'm not playing fantasy football, but you know, if anybody
(52:56):
else wants to, you can probably gets Adam booth. You're
gonna join it, all right, you can play out a
booth for that. And Sebastian, I don't, I don't. You
don't strike me as a fantasy football player.
Speaker 6 (53:05):
I am the best French player of fantasy football you've
ever seen.
Speaker 3 (53:09):
Really, I think I think you need to join us
in the league.
Speaker 2 (53:12):
Then I am bulltraiting you.
Speaker 6 (53:14):
I don't know anybody since Dishon Jackson stopped playing just
he was my guy.
Speaker 4 (53:20):
I respect that.
Speaker 3 (53:21):
Shout out to DeShawn all right, well, everybody, thank you
for tuning in to episode number fourteen of Exus and
the YU. We're proud to bring everything in the Union Verse,
and hopefully we will see some of you on Friday
at the game or the Green Day concert, and then
of course maybe at the town Hall, and we will
be back with you next week giving you more. Gents,
thank you so much for hopping on. Talk to you soon.
