head Capo, Adam Booth X player and forever a Union
legend Sebastian Latou. These may be exes, but they're the
experts when it comes to the Philadelphia Union. This is
exes in the.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
You welcome back everybody, the exes in the U. We're
bringing you everything in the Union Verse, because good lord,
there's been a lot happening. This is episode number seventeen.
We've got Leagues Cup return to MLS.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Playoffs to talk about playoffs.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
I don't know. I am joined as always with Adam
Booth and Sebastian Latoo. Gentlemen, how are you both doing
on this fine Thursday, a new recording day for us.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
I'm good, tired, but good, good student. How are you doing?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
After calling that game on the radio yesterday?
Speaker 5 (00:59):
I was so hot and I'm so happy.
Speaker 6 (01:01):
I to Kashia were coming home because he was so
you maid yesterday, it was not fun to cause the
game in the boot.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Yeah. Well, let's do a little review of League's Cup.
Let's go through those two.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Real quick universes Columbus semifinals. Ohio, man, let me tell
you real quick I hat Ohio. Do you in the
in the last since October of last year. Yes, I've
been in the state of Ohio five times.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
That's a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
It's a lot. Cincinnati, we lose, okay, so not like
in Ohio.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Second time I went out there, not a bad time.
Got to see my god parents. That was fine, that's fun.
Next time I go out there, my godfather died, so
I had to go to a funeral.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Oh no, and my girlfriend got COVID.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
So that's a strike against Ohio.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
That's pretty bad. Yeah, that's pretty bad.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Oh no, no, my girlfriend got COVID. We saw my uncle,
he got sick, and then we went to the funeral. Sorry,
that's the third.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
This is and the very last time go to Columbus
and they lose.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
You need to go to Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
No, I was in Cleveland.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Oh okay.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Yeah, there's no more Ohio. But Aron never, it's not
gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
No more. Three of the big cities I've.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Been to and it's just been a disaster. So no more,
No more Ohio.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
And here's the other thing.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
That stadium is nice, which one the Columbus I think
it's better than Cincinnati's.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
Yeah, yeah, I agree.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
The crowd, it was weird, midwestern, all nice. Came up
to me and my dad were like, Hi, how you doing.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
I'm like, I don't trust you.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
This is.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
You know, stuff being nice. You know.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
We they're happy someone came to visit.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
And we counted, including us, nine Union fans.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
That's a lot, and I will say out of the nine,
there was an early.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
Ejection what did Phil do?
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Oh? Wasn't Phil?
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Phil and I stayed on the concourse marching the game,
and two or three gentlemen were up in the section
where we were supposed to be and we're like, those
seats are terrible, We're not doing that. And then the
crew camera crew decided to be why asses and they
pandle the guy and go Philadelphia Union supporters. So the
one gentleman just put two fingers in the air.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Yeah, you gotta removed for that.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
The cops came and got him.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Oh man, And the cops told my dad that it's
not our fault, it's an MLS role.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
I mean all the whole river end would be thrown
out of that.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
We have literally before the game.
Speaker 7 (03:21):
Would have been thousands of ejections before a match. If
that was the case, so.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Kyo while high and mighty throwing people out for throwing
two birds in the.
Speaker 7 (03:29):
Air at least the Ohio Division of Major League Soccer.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Yeah, yeah, so that was my trip in a nutshell.
But uh, let's get to the game. Do you have
a Rassi scored the opener off of a rebound that
let's just say, Jack, you should have done a little
bit better, my friend. You know, if you've got their
their best, their second best player, you don't leave him unmarked.
So imagine you can tell me I'm wrong, but I
think I'm right on this one that McGlenn should have
(03:53):
kept that.
Speaker 6 (03:55):
Yeah, I mean it was a little bit mistake from
the beginning.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
It's not just him at the action. It's bad clearence.
Speaker 6 (04:02):
Not a lot of pressing switching field again, you know,
could show nobody press him like yesterday when this calls
the gold and this time you know he has a
good strike.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
But yeah andres same good say, but could have done
better and we.
Speaker 6 (04:15):
All know that you know, Jack is not is a
let's say, forte to be a good defender and follow
his men, and he got caught up for sure on
this one.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yeah, So, Adam, your thoughts on the game will kind
of go through it as is. I had a couple
of thoughts on the subs in the game itself. And
I'll tell you what, that Columbus crowd was not world beaters.
They're they're they're.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Nordky North or whatever they're called. They weren't.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
I could barely hear them. It wasn't sold out, It
wasn't the greatest environment. That's just you know, a Wednesday
leagues cut.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Yeah, And look, I mean.
Speaker 7 (04:51):
A lot of the stuff that gets lost in a
lot of the protests when they talked about like the
League's Cup and all this was, it wasn't just the
sons of that doing it. It was pretty much every
made group in Is was either thinking about or participating
in some form of protest against this competition. So when
you see that some of these supporter sections aren't as
full as they used to be, there might be actual
planning along that. And it also might be just a
(05:13):
midweek tournament that no one wants to you know actually,
or you know, or just kind of an out of
the blue.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Tournament that people don't want to engage in. You know,
YadA YadA, yadam.
Speaker 7 (05:21):
Moral of the story is, I think There's two things
that are really.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
At play here.
Speaker 7 (05:26):
One throughout the roster. I think you can compete with
Columbus if you went throughout most of the roster in
terms of like the core in the meat of your roster,
you can compete with Columbus. You can't compete with the
top of their roster right now. It's just there's there's
two guys. And if you want to put Darlington Nagby
(05:47):
in there, he has had his career in there and
he plays well. If you want to put that in
the conversation, those guys are two of the best we
have in this league right now, and they're difference makers.
And I think you know, you see the difference that
individuals of that caliber can make to a franchise. And
that's and that's the Honestygod indus truth about that. Right now,
(06:08):
Columbus might be the best team on the continent. And
it's a weird moment too, because if you look at
the Union right now, they're playing very well. They came
into that game off of a gutsy result, you know,
and then they go into this game without their number
one striker. Mind you, who's the guy who ends up
winning the Golden boot for the whole tournament. You go
(06:31):
into an environment like Columbus where I think Wilford Nancy
is lost twice in the last three calendar years and
any in major competition. You go into a situation where
this team just comes off of being declared the best
team on the continent. You know, this is as strong
of a Columbus team as you're you're possibly going to
see or ever have seen, period. So I don't feel
(06:53):
shame per se in this kind of a loss. I
think that you know, the gap that you have talent
in terms of you know, guys who can create, I
think that was exposed. And if there's a frustration point,
it's that you want to know, can I get a
guy that good? But at the same time, for the
bullets that you had in the chamber and for what
you were going up against, you know, that result doesn't
(07:16):
shock me, like I'm not over here being like the
Union blew it, you know, like, oh man, there was
a ton of opportunities and we just didn't do our job.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
It was just authentically a moment where I'm like, man,
Columbus is really good.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yeah, and smashion you you called this one on the radio,
so your your thoughts overall on the match and Columbus
and how we match up versus them, And.
Speaker 6 (07:39):
I mean they are definitely above especially offensively. I feel like,
like you said, Adams have a lot of fantastic player
you know already proved. You know, there are above you
know average for a lot of them. But they just
you know, the connections offensively, you can see that what
they do, everybody knows exactly, you know, how they want
to attack or trying to find all this ball in
(08:01):
the middle when it's the offensive player who have it,
you know, and they follow you see the goal a
second goal of Rossie, you know, with a nice coup
of Ramires.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
But then you know, you see the goal as well
of yesterday.
Speaker 6 (08:14):
They play wide, you know, very quickly, and everybody attacks
everybody defense.
Speaker 5 (08:19):
It just it's very fun to watch play.
Speaker 6 (08:21):
But if you don't have the ball like you have
been for those two games against them, it's a lot
of running for nothing. So everybody on the field knows
what is the game plan, how they want to play wide,
how they want to do like a three B two
on one.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
Side, how they want to play you know.
Speaker 6 (08:36):
The ball to the front three, especially Cultrue and they
go see, and the movement of the ball is like amazing.
It's very fun to watch them play because they move.
They defend hard as well, and it's very hard to stop.
But the only time we were able to do something
is when we're pressing high, you know, not kind of
like leaving them some gap in the middle and to
(08:58):
have them turn and go at you. So it takes
a lot of energy for sure, But when we were
able to do it, I think we caused them some issue.
But he was just let's say, twenty twenty five minutes out.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
Of the name in the game.
Speaker 6 (09:12):
So when they make all those SERB you know the
game yesterday, especially like the player pretty much then B
team you see the play the same way. But then
when they were Superstar coming, it's like a deferent game
and it's.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
So how to stop.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Yeah, And I mean, I know we've got two more
matches to cover and we want to we don't want
to linger on this.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
But there were two things. Well, it was the debut
of DJJ.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Yeah, and the first impression was he not blessed us
the hell out. I mean, that's the first impression he
made was he literally not glasses on his ass. Other
than that. I mean, he is athletic. He can just
possess the ball from people. Is it a great sample
showing yet not yet? We still have to see. And
(09:57):
the other thing that I didn't know, and I was
at the game sober watching, I didn't know in the
second half, buta Doya was in the game to the
ninetieth minute. I thought he was subbed out in the
first half. I didn't realize he was on the field
because I didn't see him do much on the field.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
I had no idea.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
And why why Alejandro Badoya is playing ninety minutes shortened
weeks is a question I love to have for Jim
really soon because he wasn't effective at all, and I
wanted to see like Sam had a bad game. I
think he was trying to do too much. Yeah, So overall,
I wasn't surprised that we lost to Columbus.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
I just was hoping we would have won and had
a chance for you know, La at super Park.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
That's what I was hoping for, no doubt, No doubt.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
You guys have anything else before we get into Colorado
and Sebastian.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
You called this game as well, didn't you.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
Yes, I caught a lot of the game.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
You know, so it was a residvery three days, so
how to kind of you know, prepare. But like the sample,
the team, you know, quick rest, go back and Colorado
and Colorado deferentt look for sure, but it was yeah, same.
I don't think we play very well in that game,
you know, offensively, know how to to get some stuff going.
(11:15):
We let's say, play well after we got to go
against and after that second half we came out flat.
Colorado took advantage of it and at the end of
again pick and this time andre Or didn't help us
to win. But it's always you know, a lot of
the penalty key. But unfortunately, then get the place in
the Champions.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
Cup and Colorado comes out and they got whooped by
LA for nothing. Yeah, so I'm going, no, wow, maybe
we've got a shot at this of of getting third
place in Champions League. And no, Calvin Harris makes the
first Uh, I don't even like his DJ music. Calvin
(11:56):
comes and scores for Colorado quite a bunch of crap
tie scores forty first, forty, fourth minute. But literally he
needed to get a hat trick for us to win
this damn game. Yeah yeah, and he had seven goals
in the League's Cup, which we'll talk about it later,
got in the Golden Boot and then Zach fricking Stefan
was Zach fricking Stephan And I feel bad because I
(12:19):
was in the front front row of the river end,
behind the right post. Yeah, and Zach came back for
a ball, and one or two times I said, Zach,
come back, come back to the Union. You can beat Drake's.
You can be Andre's backup. He shot me a look, yeah,
he's not the backup. I mean, he was an adult
man during that. But then again, we didn't really I mean,
(12:40):
Gazdag leading off no good.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
No for Rebo, no good.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
The defender scored the Buado just so, yeah, we didn't
do ourselves any favor in that game. So Adam, I'll
let you go and then let's seb a dive in
a little bit more on this game against Colorado, because
it was no good.
Speaker 7 (12:59):
Short answer, Colorado had a lot more to play for,
I think mentally than we did, because this is a
watermark for them and then making Champions League. Right now,
Colorado has gone through some lean years and I think
in the last couple of years they've definitely put themselves
in a position to be within more respect. Signing a
guy like Zach Stephan puts you in that kind of conversation,
(13:22):
so you know, I understand completely. I actually also had
my own interaction with Zach Stefan, but basically I was
just like, why aren't you still in Manchester City? And
I mean that in the sense of you were the
chosen one, my guy, Like I think a lot of us,
especially since he's local, I think a lot of us
believed in Zach Stepfan was going to be the heir
apparent to Tim Howard and in the same way, give
us a goalie, in the same way Sebah got Hugo
(13:44):
Laris for eight years. You know, I was like, hey, man,
maybe you got a guy for the next decade plus,
but did it quite work out and somehow got beat
out by Matt Turner. I'll also let him know about that,
and he was just like when I told him, I
was like, you were supposed to be the nation number one,
he was like, no, I wasn't. I'm like, no, no, no,
you totally were like I think all of us thought
(14:04):
you were supposed to be the world are the country's
number one.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
But I digress.
Speaker 7 (14:08):
Bar of the story is you played well until you
did it, and you know you got down one woke
you up. Ty looks like a man possessed right now,
like if he just gets his head or foot around
the goal like which was we'll talk about the next
game and how him getting the woodwork twice and getting
like just so close to scorn.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
His knack for the goal is insatiable right now.
Speaker 7 (14:30):
You know he's not scoring every single shot, but his
shooting percentage ust me through the roof right now. But look,
penalty kicks are stupid. We've already discussed this, that Nauseum
uh Seba has given us the greatest plan in the
history of mankind and how to deal with it. But
penalty kicks are dumb. But that's how we decide things.
And we didn't kick our as well. And I don't
(14:51):
think we've actually wanted palany kick shoot out since Nashville,
if that, if my if my memory serves me correctly, I.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
Don't think we've won one since John McCarthy was here.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
I see it was.
Speaker 7 (15:01):
It was definitely it was the semifinals against Nashville, the
conference semifinals against Nashville, and I think twenty twenty two.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
That was the last time he won a pellant kick shootout.
It's not good.
Speaker 7 (15:11):
I don't know how and Subook can probably attest to this.
I don't know how often you practice penalty kicks in
your free time during the practice, but.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
It we practice for fun. But but we win.
Speaker 6 (15:20):
Mazatlan forgot maza right, Yeah, yeah, I know what you said.
We didn't win since oh yeah, that's right.
Speaker 7 (15:27):
We did go to ponies Mas. You're right, you're right,
so then so we won. But it's like it's a
it's like a one in six record or one in
five record in the last like x amount of penalty
kick shootouts we've done.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
So it hasn't been good recently.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
No, not at all, you're tho.
Speaker 6 (15:43):
Only I thinks came out, you know, Yeah, but we did.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Hold on, yeah, a hold on one second. We're getting
the robot voice from you, so give it a second
until you I think you're clear, now go.
Speaker 5 (16:03):
Ahead, yes, so right now, it's not I think.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
All right, So wait hold one second. Well we'll get yeah,
we'll get back to you.
Speaker 7 (16:25):
Oh wait, wait wait you you get through the woods,
we'll wait. I'll fell a buster a little bit for you.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Yeah, Okay, the league's I mean, yeah, you're you're looking
at LA please Columbus and Columbus out plays LA for
the win. The Colorado beats us, they're going on to,
you know, Champions League.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
We will not now.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Uh looks like for the Open Cup, Kansas City is
automatically going to go in because they play Los Angeles
and in September.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
So that's how that rolls, where we.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
Could have had a shot, but we're not going to
We're not going anywhere in February except spring training.
Speaker 7 (17:00):
Man, there's this there's one more opportunity for us to
go to Champions League, don't you don't you fret?
Speaker 3 (17:06):
Yeah, well, well we'll get into that.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
And I think Seba, you threw the woods yet. I
don't think so, not yet, but uh yeah, so let
let's get into the MLS regular season returns. Yeah, and
we get Columbus again, And all I could think of
was Columbus.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
Maybe they got dead legs. Maybe maybe, But then again, we.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Could probably have dead legs because of how how how
much we've played, So I was just hoping, yeah, yeah,
there's a chance that we can redeem ourselves from getting
bounced out of the semi finals and getting a win
because we need as many wins as possible, Yeah, to
make the playoffs, because that's what we're going to talk about.
So Columbus comes back. But let's just talk about Columbus.
(17:53):
They had the deep CCC run run a champions league
that they played in, the CONCACAFF Champions Cup, host of
the MLS All Star Game, and the League's Cup final. Yeah,
I mean, Columbus is the bar. This is this is
the bar that we set everything up. I mean, I
think ownership knows it. I think everybody knows that.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
Wow. Remember when we were gonna get rid of Columbus.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
No, I literally tweeted this out over the weekend.
Speaker 7 (18:16):
I was like, we were like I was there holding
I have my save the Crew banner still somewhere in
my apartment, and I'm like, I was, uh, you know,
this is how they repass literally becoming the greatest team
possibly at MLS history.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
Like that's literally what happened.
Speaker 7 (18:33):
And it's crazy to see this organization go from their
scoreboards on fire to they are the standard.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
So they're teams on fire.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
Yeah, they're teams on fire. Like they are.
Speaker 7 (18:47):
They are like literally and figurarly the gold standard of
this league right now, and you know, look shout out
to them. I also was saying, everyone was like, oh,
we're going to rotate. They're going to rotate. An know
their guys, they're gonna be hungover championship celebrations. I was like,
do you guys really think they went that hard on
the League's Cup celebrations? Like, I mean, they might have,
(19:08):
but like they just won MLS Cup in the Champions League,
you think for the League's Cup was the one that
got them like wiser they I think.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
They had Monday off and then they got Tuesday a
walkthrough and we're ready to whoop our you know, on Wednesday.
Speaker 7 (19:20):
And on top of that, we also played on Sunday.
So it's not like we were resting somewhere. No, no,
we were there. We No, we did.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
We played, I mean authentic.
Speaker 7 (19:29):
We lost, but we played, so you know, it's not
like our legs were as fresh as hell. And on
top of that, the irony is, yeah, they're playing backups,
meaning people who actually had good legs, people who were rested,
people who you know, actually were like heye used their
bench and when they used their bench, those guys were
great until and they held it to zero zero, which
(19:51):
if you're will for Nancy, that's exactly what you want.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Yeah, you know you're not asking for too much of
those guys.
Speaker 7 (19:55):
And then he was like, okay, big guns, go in
and win this game for us.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
They did, you know, like masterclass.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
The good news Ty got a pregame trophy. So he
got the trophy which I don't know. That looked like
an under armour symbol. I don't know what that was.
It wasn't a golden boot, but.
Speaker 4 (20:12):
I got it.
Speaker 7 (20:13):
I want to be in one of these meetings where
they designed this stuff. That's just going to be like, guys,
you can't bear it.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
Yeah, I have to. I have to be part of this.
But so Ty gets the trophy, obviously we lose one nothing.
DJJ gets his first start again athletic. I think this
could be a really good pick up. But they are
not on the same page with each other and you
can see that. But the whole team looked disjoin it,
even with players like Quinn and I think it was tie.
(20:41):
They missed a couple of times, and I'm going they
shouldn't looked this disjoin it, but they did.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
Uh, And I'll let I think I think, Seba, we
got you back.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
A Major League Soccer day, Major League Soccer return to
the regular season against your thoughts.
Speaker 5 (21:00):
I mean, I thought it was pretty good. The first
like ten minutes. You know, we saw like five corner kicks,
you know, right away from the union and we're like, okay,
they're going to push, you know, they're gonna put some
pressure on.
Speaker 6 (21:08):
Those guys who barely playing all this year for referances
that three new guys we never played for that team,
you know, from trade a new player, and we just
did it for ten minutes. I understand it was very hot,
very humid, and they cannot do it for ninety minutes.
Speaker 5 (21:26):
But as soon as they kind of.
Speaker 6 (21:28):
Drop, Columbus got most of the ball and we were
just chasing and you were first half, yes, we hit twice,
you know, one time the post by Baribu and then
Queen Sullivan with a shot and great save by Chorty
but put on the crossbar. But all on that, you know,
second half we didn't as much. You know, it was
(21:48):
half chances. Maybe the header of Baribo in the back
post and the shot of Maglen only came on. But yeah,
it was it was hard not to be able to
see that we are going to win. You know, we
can feel it that yeah, we don't see it. And
then as soon as they make you know, theirselfs for
Columbus big different. You know, you can see that all right,
(22:10):
it's going to be tough to to get the win.
And it's what happened, you know, quick play kind of
almost a copycat of one of the goals we saw
from Columbus a week ago, and you know, one full
back find the other fullback on the other side.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
And a goal.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
So it just shows you like how good they are offensively,
especially when they play quick and you know their full
squad is on.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
And you mentioned before their defense isn't that great, but
they do possess the ball, so I think their defense
is more like we're not going to give you a chance,
and they move along with each other so well around
the pitch.
Speaker 5 (22:47):
That yeah, I mean.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
No disrespect to you know, Derrick Jones, who are probably
from the Union academy.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
You know play. I think it was motivated to do
a good game.
Speaker 6 (22:56):
But we made him look so good like he was
you know a or bookskts you know from Barcelona. We
we let so much time on it on the board
and we're kind of chasing shadows a little bit sometimes
instead of when we did it well, especially the big
of the name of the game. We put pressure on
him right away with yea or deny, you know, stepping
up on him, and he was not as good on
(23:17):
the ball. So I think it was not the best
defense I think from the Union. And then offensively, you know,
I know he decided to start Flag on the left
and not mag Lin because more defensive, you know, work
for the Union. But then you can see that offensively,
if Jackie is not on, we don't have a lot
of a guy who can pass able forward. If Gus
(23:37):
Dag doesn't become lower. You know, we just tried a
lot of loan boards. But he was not a lot
of offense, you know, from the Union.
Speaker 3 (23:45):
Yeah, Adam, here your your thoughts on this one.
Speaker 7 (23:48):
I mean, look, you know, and I'll eventually break down
some of my thoughts on the rosters and all that
with with with Columbus and everything they have going for them.
But look, you you had an opponent. I think you
took them lightly. I think you thought that they were
going to be hungover in that this would be an
opportunity for you to get them because you didn't play
them poorly.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
Really, I just think you were outclassed.
Speaker 7 (24:09):
I don't think you played poorly against them, and and
of course, yeah, and there's some bad luck in Columbus,
But I think I think you, yeah, and I think
you think in that moment you can get them. I
think we might have played down to the opponent there
and you know, thought that maybe we were just going
to snatch it. And look, toy, I should have got
at least two of those goals. I think Quinn's off
the crossbar I think was deflected, so that could have
(24:31):
been a high volume chance as well. You should have
got a goal. You should have put it at that
game away early. You let them linger.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Yeah, we should have.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
We should have.
Speaker 7 (24:42):
Yeah, you're definitely dropping points here, dropping all three here.
I don't like the US word devastating, but it's pretty bad.
It's not really good for your hopes.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
And most notable, which could be devastating. Harriel goes down
with a back injury early on. Yep, get subbed out.
He is the center back for US. Jim even said it, yep.
So it looks like we may be seeing the young
kid as the backup sooner than anyone on the team
wanted to, because nobody knows what Nate and Jim said
(25:12):
in the press conference goes that is lower back seized.
Speaker 3 (25:15):
That's something you don't play around with. So Nate may
not be with us, probably not for Red Bull.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
Yeah, that might be the biggest takeaway from just not
getting any points out of this game is that we
are going to be real thin on the back line
in where we are sitting at tenth place.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
Yeah, it's playoffs or bust.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
At this point, all of our UPco coming opponents are
East Coast. The only team that has a worse record
than us is DC, which is good and bad because
we take points away from teams ahead of us that
that really helps us in the standings. But we're playing
good teams for the rest of this season and they're
all in the East Coast. So if we're going to
(25:54):
make the playoffs, we got to do some work.
Speaker 7 (25:57):
Yeah, but you know it's in front of you, and
I think as rwation, you want that. You want it
to at least be in your hands, and you're playing
the people who are in front of you, so you
have the capabilities of making the playoffs. You don't need
seventeen other people to fall off the map. For you
to do it, you just need to take care of
your business and you'll you'll make playoffs and you can
go from there. But speaking of roster, you want to
(26:17):
get you want to get in the roster, and then
we'll get into the upcoming match. Oh perfect in just
two seconds, especially since coming off Columbus. So there's a
lot of discussion about roster and money spending and all this.
And I went into a very long deep dive the
other night. So following players are in their last year
of their deal, meaning their deals will expire on December
(26:37):
for twenty thirty first twenty twenty four and Baizo, Uda,
Elliott Block, Quinn Sullivan, Trent Ardan and Beadoya all those
guys deals expire at the end of this year. I
don't believe andre Alijndro's coming back. No, I just that
doesn't really.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
Feel it will be a similar deal.
Speaker 7 (26:58):
I feel Trent's going to come back. That's only because
he's depth. I'm not going to say it's Karen, it's
four goalies, I know, but I'm saying it will probably
drop samell it sam Alia from before we drop try
Quinn Sullivan. Interesting. I don't know if they're going to
try to sell that. I think if you're going to
try to sell him, this might be a time to
try to sell him. He's only making one hundred fifty
thousand dollars over the year, so it's not like it's
(27:20):
a huge financial burden. Block's making three hundred thousand dollars.
Jack Elliott thinking eight hundred thousand dollars.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
So that's the question. Yeah, because then you're gonna have
to pay him more.
Speaker 7 (27:29):
And I don't know if you're going to pay a
million dollars for Jack Elliott at this pace.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
He hasn't been playing this year like a million dollar player,
so I don't know if you would.
Speaker 4 (27:36):
No, Mika Uda isn't making one point eight million dollars.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
Highest transfer fee we've ever paid, too.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
I did. It's interesting.
Speaker 7 (27:43):
It's interesting because here's the thing about it, and this
is the kind of conversation we're having, and we'll talk
about Damian Lowe leaving in a minute. You have to
replenish about six to seven roster spots for the first
team when the end of this year happens. So where
and when and how? Is really like the question about
like how that money is going to be distributed.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Out on that list. Yet, you just mean, how many
people do you think are viable that we would be
able to sell.
Speaker 7 (28:08):
I think you can possibly sell Elliot. It's going to
be interesting. I think you're going to have to have
a walk. But Selliman is to sell. You might be
able to get something from him Baizo. He does have
an international pedigree for that. UA would be a sellable asset.
I don't know if you can recoup what you sold
on him originally because he hasn't performed.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
But so well Flock, we.
Speaker 3 (28:28):
Hear things once in a while.
Speaker 4 (28:30):
But and Flock could go. But I but I also
believe it's not going to be a huge number.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
That you There's not a lot of money coming off
of that.
Speaker 7 (28:37):
No, so you're basically trying to just recoup salary as
opposed to get money and transfer fees and all that.
But what we want to compare organizations, and we want
to talk about the Union spending. The Union are twenty
third in MLS and spending right now. They spend fourteen
point nine million dollars on their first team roster. That's
all the players on the first team roster, including everyone
(28:57):
signed a.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
Fourteen year old two, fourteen year old two.
Speaker 7 (28:59):
Even we don't actually have his salary printed anywhere, but
that's into the numbers and all of that. Of those salaries,
Mikuel Uda is the thirty seventh highest player paid in MLS.
Kadzak is the forty third highest player, Yakup is the
eighty seventh highest player. Kai's the ninety eighth highest player.
Andre Blake is the one hundred and fourteenth highest player.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
That was before the new payroll, I think.
Speaker 7 (29:23):
Of course, but he was, but he was only making
nine hundred and nineteen million dollars or in one thousand
dollars a year, where Kai is making one million, Yakup's
making one point one, Godz is making one point seven,
and it has maken essentially two million in terms of salary.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
I think Seba's head's going to blow up listening to
these salaries for some of these guys, considering what he's
done for the team.
Speaker 7 (29:43):
Well, for instance, right now, ty Bar Taya Burribo is
making seven hundred and sixty thousand dollars, and up until
about five minutes ago, that would seem to be like
a complete bust.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
True, So now it's a bargain.
Speaker 7 (29:52):
Now it's a bargain, and you had at the time
Jose was making about six hundred and seven thousand dollars.
But he's off. He's going to be off the books.
The Columbus crew, the team that is ahead of you,
the gold standard, the team that everyone is looking at,
is twenty first in spending. They only spent fifteen point
two million dollars on their roster. Now granted they spent
Diego Rossi's making three point four million dollars a year,
(30:14):
right and Tutor Hernandez is making two point nine million
dollars a year. But after that, Darlington Nagby's making one
point five million dollars and no one else on their
roster is making a million dollars. So you actually have
more players in between their top in their middle than
they do your Your money is distributed in a way
that is much different than Columbus. Columbus is definitely a
(30:36):
top heavy, top heavy roster where you've distributed your money because,
especially since you've had people here for a long period
of time, you're rewarding Glasnez, You're rewarding Elliott, You're rewarding
Kai for service and all of that. So you're giving
them those contracts. These guys come off the books and
you have to replace that talent anyway. You're gonna have
about two million dollars at least to play with in
(30:57):
terms of salary before you talk about gam TAM and
everything else.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
So it's interesting to look.
Speaker 7 (31:02):
At where you're comparing yourself and spending wise. Obviously Miami
is on another level, but you're not that far away
from people that you're competing with with money wise.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
This might be, and we're not in the off season yet,
but this might be the most looked at off season
in union history.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
Absolutely, Yeah, definitely will be.
Speaker 5 (31:19):
But what you have? What do you are missing?
Speaker 4 (31:21):
Adam too?
Speaker 6 (31:21):
If I jump in your point, how did Columbus build
their roster? Tell me two years ago half of them
used to play in MLS. Next who won the title? Yeah,
And so what I'm getting at is, you know, right
now two is doing pretty well for themselves. But you know,
(31:44):
with financi coming as a new coach, plays those guys
and they prove, you know themselves, they are good at
the lower level, but then they got a chance.
Speaker 5 (31:54):
To play at the higher level in MLS and they
prove themselves as well.
Speaker 6 (31:57):
So all the guys like Zawatski who the captain yesterday,
like half Stem. You have a Farsi who didn't play yesterday,
but another guy is the goalkeeper as in Shorty. You
have like the forward Russell Row yesterday like he has.
(32:17):
There's like three or four more guys Morris who used
to play in Columbus too, who now is a you
know transfer in England. All of those guys played in
the second team and now you know that makes their
way to the first team. And that's why, like you said,
the salary of those guys are not very high because
it's just been two years. They are playing, you know,
and they tend to prove themselves, but they're playing.
Speaker 5 (32:39):
And they're doing well.
Speaker 6 (32:40):
There's such a big roster for Columbus because there's so
much people who can play any position and they got confidence,
you know, to play and right now in a gym
doesn't play as much on the youngers, and every time
he's like, oh, yes, they are not ready or they
are you know, maybe not good enough right now. But
in the same time it's like are you going to
(33:02):
wait to be out of the playoffs to play them
or you want to help them, help you now and
try to make you, you know, run and qualify.
Speaker 5 (33:12):
For the playoffs. So but like you said, it's the
Columbus Crew rose there.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
It's a lot of higher paid player some of them,
but then it's a big mix. But because all the
guys who are still very young come from the second
team and from themselves, you know, in their own club
winning of course the title is their second team and
then for the first.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
Yep, the one thing is the biggest difference between the
Crew and the EU.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
Like that, Ryan, I like that. That was good. That's good.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
The transfer feees transfer.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
They're paying now, they did pay They did sell their
best player for about ten million and they use that
money for those two other guys for transfer. So that's
that's the blueprint. That's what you're gonna have to see.
Is the front offices the union gonna do that. Do
we have the assets to sell?
Speaker 4 (34:01):
That's the first question, first question.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
And if you do, does it go into the team
as a whole, like the academy or infrastructure, or does
it go into finding one or two bigger names or
our unpolished gems or the Quransas of the world that Johns.
So we're gonna say we're gonna say. Now, we have
Labor Day weekend Paris in New Jersey. So Union traveled
(34:23):
to Red Bull for Saturday the thirty first, and then
we got a little bit of a break because September
fourteenth is Miami in Miami, so maybe we hopefully we
can go up to Red Bull, steal a game, steal
three points, and then get some get some rest, get
get nat a massage on the back so he can
(34:45):
be healthy and get down to see Messi and hopefully
his messed up ankles still.
Speaker 4 (34:50):
I think it's the size of a canalope. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Well, they guaranteed that he is going to play in
the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (34:54):
Oh I would, I think that you have to.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
That's what they said.
Speaker 4 (34:57):
I think Garberg guarant made that guarantee.
Speaker 3 (34:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
I think Garba would donate his ankle for him. I
don't know if it's worth anything. So that is what
we have upcoming now Union News, we're talking about it.
We know Albrujo left us, and then what I found
interesting was he drew fifty six yellow cards in one
hundred and forty eight games.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
That seems low. That does seem that seems.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
Like it really does seem low for him thought, low, Yeah,
I thought he's going to be in the seventies or eighties.
Speaker 7 (35:26):
You're gonna tell me like in he only did one third. Yeah, yeah,
he only did one third. That's impressive, it seems low.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Yeah. And then as we said, Damian Lowe is going
to Saudi Arabia.
Speaker 4 (35:36):
Yeah, should we break.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
This down to let people know kind of what happened
and why all this.
Speaker 7 (35:43):
Damian Lowe wanted to make more money and he wasn't
going to make more money with the Philadelphia Union, and
he knows he's on the end of his career where
he needs to get himself another big contract, and he
knows he can go to Saudi Arabia and make a
lot of money because he's already played in a Muslim
based country before.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
He passionately argued plead it to la let me go.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
So that's been so the Union were kind of in
a hard place because you don't want to be the
team that doesn't let somebody go pursue a better opportunity.
But he did put us in a bad spot because
this offer didn't come until after our window was closed,
meaning we couldn't bring any more players in, but we
could still transfer guys out the fact that they got
two hundred grand thank you oil money. At least we
(36:23):
got something for you, yea, honestly, and everyone's like, well,
we had seven games.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
No, he was on a yellow card accumulation, so he
only had six games left with the Union.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
So as much as it sucks for us that Demian
Lowe isn't there to back up the guys, and I
like the guy, that's kind of behind the scenes why
he left.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
He pushed for it.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
He was going to get double the salary he was
making with the Union over in Saudi Arabia, and he
chose that and the Union were good corporate citizens and
let him go. They could have said no, but that
makes you, that doesn't make you an attractive.
Speaker 3 (36:57):
Place to play.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
Yeah, you can't be that club.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
You can't be that club, especially with the season.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
Yeah, yeah, let him go.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
So that's that's that's why he that's why he left.
You heard all the same things that we did, Sebastian
or you're.
Speaker 5 (37:10):
Pretty much not pretty much? Yeah, I mean it's I
think I say perfectly.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
There you go go.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
I worked, I worked on it. I was practicing in
the mirror.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
Yeah, and we talked the league news.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
The Open Cup we already know September the twenty fifth,
and we it's gonna be on Apple TV. The US
Open finally got a TV and it's on Apple but
it's free. So La versus Sporting Kansas City, September twenty fifth,
If anyone's interested now talking about TV around the soccer
world news, Yeah, ted Lasso.
Speaker 3 (37:42):
Is back The Best season four.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
They are bringing it back with three cast members no
ted Lasso, So I don't know how they're gonna call
it ted Lasso.
Speaker 4 (37:53):
It's gonna be interesting.
Speaker 3 (37:54):
I just want to know how are they going to
jump the Shark? Are they going to take over Wrexham?
They're going to combine those two? Is that?
Speaker 4 (37:59):
What's? Oh my, that would be the best.
Speaker 7 (38:01):
If Ryan Reynolds just showed up I jumped the Shark.
I think he just extended it four seasons, my guy.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Yeah, So Ted ted Lasso's back, so we're gonna see
what happens. And then the NWSL and the players have
reached the DAL on a new collective bargaining agreement. Good
for them because we know historically those players were not
treated the best.
Speaker 3 (38:22):
Just look at the old Gotham.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
What was that team called the New Jersey, the ones
that played in Rutgers that tortured Carly Lloyd Sky.
Speaker 3 (38:30):
So good for the ladies they they torture, well, she
had to get dressed.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
In like a spot a pot, So come on, Governor
Murphy was not providing the accommodation of.
Speaker 4 (38:40):
The Harrisburg City Islanders all over again exactly.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
So yep, that's that's news. And then we know.
Speaker 4 (38:48):
They eliminated the draft.
Speaker 7 (38:49):
That was just showing that to Matt that the NWSL
eliminated the draft, which is for North American sports of
a water bark, because we need to eliminate the draft
in all sports. I'm a big part of that economy
where players should be able to choose where they go,
especially in the year of Our Lord twenty twenty four
with this much money going around. I'm tired of colleges
just being sports factories. So eliminating the draft is a
(39:11):
big Lets start.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
With MLS eliminating the draft, and then we from no
the Union NFL draft.
Speaker 7 (39:17):
The Union should have forced MLS to finish the draft.
That should have been the first time he tried.
Speaker 3 (39:22):
He tried.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Yeah, and talking about real quick, we got the big
leagues around the Soccer World, the Premier League. Man you
loses to Brighton. Man City just tore up poor Ipswich
and Arsenal. Good job, so Arsenal beat Villa. You must
be happy about.
Speaker 5 (39:39):
That, of course, you know, always a good start.
Speaker 6 (39:42):
It's very important, so they keep going, especially when we
pay it for the big ones.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
And speaking of big ones, Adam Chelsea, I'm afraid Wolves
six to two against the Wolves. Chelsea is back, baby,
with all forty nine of our roster.
Speaker 4 (39:59):
Spot and you hear we're trying to sign.
Speaker 7 (40:01):
Tony to sign more what is what is that money
they're using over there.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
In Syria Western McKinney staying with Juventus. Yeah, and did
you see your childhood idol Drake.
Speaker 7 (40:13):
We really can't be calling him my childhood idol. He's
got some scandals right now.
Speaker 4 (40:16):
You know. I don't want to.
Speaker 3 (40:19):
Look.
Speaker 7 (40:20):
I enjoyed him under Grassy, That's all I will say.
But yeah, he's a Vanensia investor, so I mean they're
in immediately and in the way of Palermo right now.
So I'm not really his biggest fan about it, but whatever,
I mean, good for Vanezia though, they're a really good club,
good city they just have a terrible stadium.
Speaker 2 (40:36):
And then I just want to get Sebastian's thoughts on this.
In League one, PSG has ten goals in just two games.
Speaker 3 (40:44):
Are they just going to run away with us again?
And this is what? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (40:49):
I mean they might, but you know, I think there's
some good I think you're going to start going to
Chapins League and they have to play every three days.
But yeah, the big fright right now, Steve.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
Yeah, And just a reminder for everybody as we wrap
this up, the Sun to Bend are doing their fantasy
football league and we'll let you know more about the supporters.
Speaker 3 (41:12):
It looks like there's a new group in town called
the Dup and Degenerates. They are a part of that.
They're applying for ISCOL, so they will be a big boy,
big big move, big boy move.
Speaker 2 (41:23):
So we we we're gonna have a crowded river and
the end of this year and next year.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
So we'll keep you informed with all that. And I
think that's everything.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
You guys have anything to add or should we put
a bow on this and get ready for Red Bull
on Saturday?
Speaker 4 (41:36):
No, that was fine, Let's do it again sometime, Hi, guys.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
Sebastian Letto, thank you so much again, Adam Booth, thank
you and everyone that was episode number seventeen.
Speaker 3 (41:44):
X's in the U and we will see you next week.
Thank you.
