Speaker 1 (00:04):
Ex President of the Sons of Ben Matt Kintastic ax
Head Capo, Adam Booth, X Player and forever a Union
legend Sebastian Latou. These may be exes, but they're the
experts when it comes to the Philadelphia Union. This is
exes in the U.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Welcome back everybody to XES in the U. We are
on episode Adam eighteen. We are eighteen already and as
I said, we are joined with Adam Booth and of
course Union legend Sebastian Latoo. Everybody, welcome back to Ex's
in the U. We are covering everything in the Union verse.
Even though it is officially international break. We don't take
(00:46):
those breaks. We just keep humming along. Guys. How are you, Sebastian?
How you doing?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I'm doing good, guys.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
A great weekend through charge of battery and ready for
you know the four.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yeah, Adam, good Labor Day weekend.
Speaker 5 (01:01):
Good Labor Day weekend. As a good red blooded Philadelphia
went down to the Jersey Shore, Sea Isle and a
little bit of Ocean City because I didn't think I
had enough stimuli and uh, but look, I'm ready for
this this stretch to come down the bend with the
U with the U.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
And speaking of Red Blood it, we'll just go right
into Red Bull. The Union also went to New Jersey
like you did. They did, but they went North Jersey
to face our quote unquote rivals and uh and we
get the w yes and and and Sebastian did not
get to call the game, so he got to watch
(01:37):
it like us as a pedestrian on on Apple TV.
And let's just get into it. Who wants to take
the first cracket talking about Union Red Bull?
Speaker 6 (01:47):
I think the former Red Bull can do it. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
You want to get into some of your history with
Red Bulls Jersey, all kinds of questions for you.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
No, I mean I feel like it was a kind
of pretty entertaining game. I think the result of two
zero is kind of nice for the Union because the.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Red Bull was very unlucky. But we're going to.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
Take, you know, this kind of good luck for us
and get the three points away. You know, that's what
we need after kind of losing some points at home
against Columbus.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
And yeah, it was pretty entertaining.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
I really personally like love the movement in front in
that game. I think it was really like kind of
more synchronized between guys Dago Baribo, you know, the passing,
the running. I think it was pretty good and it's
something we didn't see too much of that in the
past couple of games, but you can see two like
when Margline is in the field, it brings definitely something
(02:47):
more offensively, like you know, passing wise, you know, forward,
the finding, the the you know, three guys on top
when we don't have when you start, you know, flag
on the left.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
So it's kind of what they've plan.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
It is no defensive offensively, you know, you have like
both sides, but I would love to have Jack you know,
really better defensively, and for sure, you know, it's like
a starter, you know, untenable for the team, but it was.
It was great game to watch and see. We could
have get you know a second goal from variable but
hit the post. I enjoy as well. Danley, you know
(03:22):
his game. I think Box two Box already really strong
and uh yeah, and I think that's.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
A good result.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
But if we play the same way against Miami defensively,
we definitely will get Pernis is going to be a
game as a you know four too, you know, five, three,
whatever it is.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
So I think we.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
Need to play the same way offensively, but tie it
up a little bit defensively.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Totally agree, and I think Michel Urrey would agree with
you that God he really does like Jack McGlenn in
the game, setting him up, and that's that was basically
the key. Adam. The New York Red Bulls before this
game haven't lost in nine games. Yeah, and then but
they haven't beaten the Union since twenty nineteen.
Speaker 6 (04:08):
This that startled me when I saw that step.
Speaker 5 (04:12):
I a couple of people put that out and I
think including the Union themselves, and it was just like, wait,
and then you realize, I mean, like fourteen games against
Red Bull is only about like five years, but still
that's like five years of you not losing to Red
Bull in in capacity a team where in the early
stages of this of this franchise, we were almost exclusively
(04:32):
not beating Red Bull And now it is like the
tables have a completely one to eighty. Like you can't
call it a rivalry because I don't think at any
time other than maybe the time when Marco Fabion beat them,
have these teams ever been truly good at the same
time enough for it to be.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
A RIVALRP better than us. They're ranked fourth.
Speaker 6 (04:53):
They're very good right now.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
And this is the irony of this is there's a
lot of weirdness going on in the Eastern Conference right now.
I think there's a lot of good teams, but I'm
not exactly sure who's truly great. Like obviously Columbus is Columbus,
and Cincinnati looks the part. Again, the Union went to
Cincinnati and the League's Cup and beat them. You know,
the last couple of matches they've played have looked a
little more skeptical. You know that it seems like it's
(05:16):
going to make it less of a supporter shield race
now if Cincinnati doesn't want to get their stuff together. But
then after that, look, the Union are in thirty points
and Red Bull are at forty two points, but in
a couple of games that gap could be a little
bit closer like that, And it just shows me that,
you know, the Union skid was devastating, but I don't
(05:38):
believe it's a world ender, because I believe that when
this team is talented, they can still compete with the best.
And getting a result at Red Bull where the form
that they had versus the form that you would have
if you want to go back nine eight games, so
all of that, that's an impressive result. What Sebastian said
was one hundred percent correct. The Union got lucky. There's
(05:59):
a lot of moments where Red bull are on the
doorstep and a boot a lace you know, will stumble
here and it changes the whole dynamic of this.
Speaker 6 (06:07):
Also, Andrea Blake is Andre Blake. You know, fun facts, give.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
You a quick stats, Andre Blake. Four saves, yeah, the
goalpost five Yeah. So I mean there was a lot
of luck involved in that, but we need some lucky breaks.
Speaker 5 (06:20):
Well that's what I'm saying, because a couple of games
ago we're talking about Ty Barbia not hitting a couple
of goal posts against Colorado. We have a Quinn Sullivan
getting his ball deflected into a goal post against Columbus.
So you know, it all balances, if you will. The
soccer gods are who the soccer gods are. But look,
great result, fabulous result. You know, it's an unfortunate and
(06:42):
now they have to take a break because I think
that's a momentum builder, especially after how they finished the
League's Cup. I think the Union feel good about themselves,
but I also believe this is a good time to
heal and I think if the good time to heal
that well.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
And I was going to ask Sebastian, is this a
great time? You get that win against Red bull and
you get a week off, well, most of the guys
get a week off, we'll get under the international break.
But as you as a player, would this be a
great time before you have to face somebody like Miami
to have a break or do you think you would
rather keep going forward while you have momentum.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
I think it's a good break for the team, just
because we have been so far in the ricks CPT
and you play in every three days those guys were retired.
I think winning at Red Bulls is fantastic because it
gives you more being positive, you know, for two weeks.
You know, it's so much better at practice instead of
imagine you lose again at Red Bulls. After you lose
that home against Connumbus. It's it's like the mood is
(07:35):
not the same, you know, it's you know, my guys, sorry,
I have a load of my pants, you know, in.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
The back, your fans in the background, I tell you everywhere.
It's great.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
But I think the yeah, the mood of the thing
is good. Having a break I think it's good and
I think too playing a Miami team with one of
the best as well when they play at home, maybe
Maysie coming back, you know, that weekend to play the un.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
And a starter or even coming up the bench.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
I think it's it's good for gym and it's TOFF
to be able to prepare every type of scenario, see
exactly who is kind of physically need a little bit more,
you know, to get pushed during the this week, who
needs to get a little bit more rest, you know,
give some guys some days off they didn't get for
a month. And I think mentally it's what really like
helped you know, to win at at Red Books because
(08:22):
now you're like, okay.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
We have seven game left. You know, we have a
lot of team were above.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Us beside DC, but just behind it's every game it's
you know, to get the three points and playing away.
I have to say this year, you know, there've been
probably pretty good. You know, every time we need to
get a result away, they did it. So I would
be not surprised if we get a good result in Miami.
But it's Miami, so let's see, you know, how they
attack it, which kind of line up. You know, Gym
(08:49):
is going to to put more offense, more defense, a
plan to stop Messy if Missy is playing. And yeah,
I feel what I like to about the New York
is he scept you know, like even if he started,
which would believe, I don't know, but he's just playing
fifteen minutes, and I think this was good. You know,
it's I think it's Ali is great for you know,
(09:09):
forty five fifty and he knows about it. And then
you know, you put somebody else who can really help
and close the game, which I think was much you know,
better for the team to have like those type of
sub much earlier on.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
In again, truly agree with the subs and hope Jim
does that in Miami. Just to let everybody know, in
that game, Yori gets ten goals, so that is his
third fourth, third season double digits goals for Rebo scores,
so he's still scoring. So if we get the top
(09:41):
two guys scoring, we could be a very very very
tough team to beat. And then the other thing I
thought was good was Elliott and Wagner avoided yellow cards
because they were both on accumulations, so we get them
versus Miami. So I think we got out of Red
Bull everything you wanted to get, You got a victory,
you got some momentum. Hopefully guys get healthy and then
(10:03):
we can we can get into Miami. Right now, let's
just let's just one. Will MESSI be back? How's the
Union going to play September fourteenth in Miami? Is the
weather going to be a factor with tropical storms? There's
a lot of ifs going on with Miami, and I
mean they're still even without Messi, They're still pretty damn good. Adam,
(10:23):
do you want to tackle what you think about Miami,
then we'll get Sebastian's expert opinion.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
I mean, I think with the with Inter Miami Club
de Football, all their fun name internationalite anyway, Look, I
find that there has advertised in a lot of ways
their offense is, you know, deadly. It's scary. You're dealing
with master class people of the game. You know, Serge
just sketch, Jordie Alba. These are guys who all forget
(10:50):
about the guy that.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Just retired from international play.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
No, I mean he goes with us saying but I'm
saying like, but I'm saying his ensemble cast is still
of the caliber to make it like, Okay, they're scary
as hell, but that defense it just it's not necessarily
one that I'm saying, Okay, cool, this thing has as
many holes that would have kept the Titanic afloat. You know,
(11:15):
this is definitely a situation where you can score goals
against these guys, you know, Now can you stop goals
being scored against you? That's a very big question, and
especially with how your center back play has been recently.
Has it been up? Has it been down? Where you
just sold Damian Lowe, which might have been an option
in this particular scenario for to get a little bit
(11:35):
more speed through the middle.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
How's Nate hariels back?
Speaker 5 (11:40):
How's Nay hariels back? You know, there's there's a lot
of questions going into some both sides, so it's kind
of hard to kind of truly predict it. But you
are more than capable of going there and getting a result.
I don't believe that this is a gauntlet. You know,
they're just a very good soccer team. But I think
that if you put the names aside and you just
(12:01):
look at what they're playing as an organization right now, Yeah,
it's gonna be tough, but you're also road warriors, you know,
you go to places that are difficult and you get
results all the time. You did it a couple of
weeks ago in a place where in Cincinnati, a place
where no one's been winning recently. So I don't know,
I fear No Evil is really one of these. It
was basically how I would look at this.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
You know, I'm hoping they play the front of the
jersey and not focus on the back of the jersey
when the Union go down to Miami, because the last
time they played Messi in the League Cup, they looked
like they were in love with him. So I'm hoping
they just play him as just another player, not the legend,
not the goat.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
Look, I think that's warn't off if I'm honest, way
I hoped, I think, I mean, and look, it might
be for some players, maybe for some other guys, and
obviously I'm sure we're gonna have some pitch invaders, you know,
on the field for when he comes eventually back to
Chester and all.
Speaker 6 (12:52):
That, yeada, YadA YadA. But like I think, like, yes.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
He is.
Speaker 5 (12:57):
Top five of all time probably you know, he's he's
literally one of the greatest. Probably Ham Maradona, the greatest
Argentinian ever. But at this point, man, he's like Beckham
eventually just became an MLS player, you know, Like I mean,
he was great, but he was still like, you're just
a Galaxy player at one points. See eventually will be
a Miami player. And I think that's what the players
are getting closer to it, even if the fans happen yet.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Now, Sebastian as a coach, would you rather have more
offensive mind lineup to start against Miami knowing that you
could score against them, or do you really try to
stack up the defense and play provame.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
I mean, what I like about the match up is
the fact that Mike Glen play on the left and
Alba is on the right. So for me, Alba is
you know, a very big threat because when he comes up,
you know, he chooses moments and he's always involved offensively,
like he's so good, you know, finding the feat ofrez
Busquet and follow and get the ball back as you
know goal. So I would say, let's maybe have a
(13:55):
bit better a defend on the right side if he plays,
of course, and then you know, if may See play
doesn't play, it's definitely enough.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
So how to to kind of know what he's going
to do.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
But I would say let's not maybe watch them, you
know and be fans and be like, let's put some pressure.
Let's show them, you know that we are here to
win the game and qualify for the playoffs and not
be like, you know, it's those guys who are going
to give them a little bit more time and you know,
player around us like they did the first time in
the Playlis Cup in Philly. So I don't think it's
(14:25):
where the team is that now, but I think it's
a good thing for you as well that Miami is
already qualified for the playoff. There are you know, I
think seven points in from Cincinnati, same as much point
on the West coast to get you know, the supporter shield.
So do they feel pressures in the result to get
the shield yet?
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Now?
Speaker 4 (14:45):
So are they going to maybe be more relaxed get
I think the break for them is kind of like
good as well. But some time as they're going to
come very strong out of the gate, you know, the
first fifty minutes and try to score probably not as
my you know, they are going to start slow and
maybe react after hopefully the Union start scoring goals. Or
(15:06):
two like they did in New York. So it's it's
definitely a great game. They want to play the best
team they have it, and I think it's a great
type of judgment for the team after the international break,
is like where is the union at? Are they able
to challenge Miami even if maybe it's their best player
mass is not playing, but can.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
They get a result?
Speaker 4 (15:24):
Because as of now, if we care for the playoffs,
we are maybe the last place, which means we play
Miami in the first round. And if you play Miami
in the first round, you need to be them. So
I think it's a great test, you know, two months
before the playoffs to see where the team is at
and if let's say we have a team to compete
against Miami.
Speaker 5 (15:44):
Now Souber and I had to ask for Obviously, not
all of these guys are amount of slippers. The team
is not even really like they've been around MLS for
a little bit. But I don't think a lot of
the culture has seeped back down and Fort Lauderdale slash
Miami since you know the was the the mutiny or
now they were the fusion Fusion were there? Do you
(16:04):
think Miami is in a mode where the Supporter Shield
is a priority to them or do you think getting
healthy for the playoffs is bigger for them at this point?
Speaker 3 (16:14):
I mean it's the title, you know, the shield. I
think it's it's a shield.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
As a player, like you know, there's not mini trophy
to win in America. So if you can win the Shield,
it's something you can say that you want as a club.
And for Miami just being here for a couple of years,
winning it is kind of like Okay, they put their name,
you know, in the same line and some team already
and the Union is one of them to want it.
So I will say, yes, they are going to play
and try to get your shield as soon as they can.
(16:40):
And when they got the shield, now you know Tatamatino
can kind of manage his team Stanley player when you
want to start have a massy travel away or staying
in Miami to rest.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
You know.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
I think it's it's the most amort for them is
to get it as soon as they can, so now
they can just be able to manage the week, have
their time, just the play home game, rest, you know,
the Albasa busquets so they don't have to travel for
any away games, so I will do it this way.
But in the same time, yeah, you as a coach,
you maybe you want to rest, but if you are
(17:13):
approach player, you're competitor.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
You want to win everything.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
It's I think the man said that everybody is so
I would say, yeah, they want to be the union
and they want to win the shield as well as
they can.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
Cute thing about the shield, which Adam, you'll be interested
in this. Miami doesn't have a supporters group represented by ISC,
so by the i C rules, Miami would win the shield.
I would come down, let them take a picture with it,
and take it the hell back. Miami won't it be
able to have the shield for the year for photo
(17:48):
ops because they don't have a group that's represented in
is C. Like when we want it, the Sons of
Ben were recognized and we control the shield. So that's
going to be pretty funny that they'll do all this
to get the shield, but they really won't have the
shield for the whole year.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
I needed my friends down at the Black Herons down
there in Fort Lauderdale to get yourself some membership as
soon as possible, because that would be very awkward and
I don't think I explaining that to them will be
very awkward. And I'm sure the team knows this.
Speaker 6 (18:18):
I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
I bet you the team doesn't because I'll tell you
the Union didn't know the rules about the shield. They
thought they had it and I was like, no, no, no,
the groups control this thing, so it's going to be interesting.
And I guarantee you Miami doesn't know about it. Their
supporters group doesn't care because I don't even know what
they do.
Speaker 5 (18:36):
Do you think Beckham knows now Beckham's been around for
a while. Do you think he just knows. He has
to know.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Jim didn't know.
Speaker 4 (18:43):
Adam, I have a question for the Adam Pidia. Do
you know what is the most point a supporter sholl
winner got after a season?
Speaker 3 (18:50):
Since there is a supporter should.
Speaker 6 (18:53):
The most points after.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
Because because you know, for a lot of players and
not coming you know, coming out of the MLS not
knowing the playoffs, winning the shield it's more meaningful then
the playoff. I knows the playoff is meaningful, but the
playoff is kind of like kind of lottery really bit too.
But you know, if you are the best during the
entire season and you have the most points, you know,
the like kind of the Union almost did it, you know,
(19:20):
like having the best defense, the most clean shit or whatever.
That's something you can be like, hey, we were the best.
So I don't know how many points My mini is
to get to be the best supporterial winner, but maybe
they want to go for that as well, you know.
Speaker 6 (19:34):
I want to. This is one of the times I
have to actually look this one up.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Fifty nine points. But I think whoever was by the
largest margin, I think was LA the year before US,
because they had three or four games they had it
wrapped up where we went to the very last game
when we won that. So I don't know if it's
amount of points or just a gap, but right now
they've got a eight point gap between Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
Yeah, And I mean I'm on a point for me
because he means's demon of wins.
Speaker 5 (20:04):
You know, it was two thousand and one, twenty twenty one,
it was seventy three points by the New England Revolution.
Speaker 6 (20:12):
That was the highest point total in.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
MLS history after US twenty twenty one, New England got
seventy three points. That's the time they scorched the earth
after beating US in the first round the playoffs, after
we had the r season, they were just like, oh,
we're actually very good. And then it's Solotaje on Buchanan.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Fun fact, they were wrapping that up against d C. Yeah,
so I drove the Shield down to DC to hand
it off to the Midnight Riders and they brought it
into d C Stadium to show them that we won
the shield. You do it, and I think they let
them bring it in too, which they didn't let us
bring it into Aldi when we had the shield now July.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
Oh sorry, seventy three Yeah, yeah, it was seventy three points.
In July, Cincinnati was on pace to actually beat the
record with seventy four points. I don't know if that's
still the case, but that was the total. But I mean,
look in the grand Scheme said, I mean sayings correct.
Most people won't globally say regular season champion is the
champion and the.
Speaker 6 (21:10):
Playoffs or the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
I would say the twenty twenty two playoffs is that
rare moment where you had one versus two, like at
the end game was this was the best team, This
was the Supporter Shield winner versus the team that was
like literally a point behind them in the Supporter shield race,
So you know that, like what Seba saying is right,
so much of the playoffs as a crap shoot, hence
why New England's never won it, hence why a lot
(21:33):
of clubs like Red Bull have never won it. But man,
that was like a rare moment in time when it
was just like, yeah, no, this is the best of
the best of the best are playing and that was,
you know, a watermark moment for the league. I think
they say it was the best final ever. I still
hold it might open.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Yeah, And like you both said, Europeans international players really
do value something like the shield over playoffs. Playoffs is
definitely an American invention. It's something where everybody in America
loves the playoffs. There's, like you said, a crap shoot
and there's more revenue. So let's just face it. In
American sports, we love the revenue. But speaking of international duty,
(22:10):
the US for some reason is going to play Canada
Saturday in Kansas City. Then they're playing New Zealand Tuesday
in Cincinnati. Why. I have no idea. We don't even
have a coach. The U twenties coach is gonna play.
But the Union call ups well past Union Aaronson McKenzie trustee,
and I'm always throwing in Polistic as a former Union
(22:31):
player since he did play for the pre Academy. So
they're going to represent the US and then for the
Union themselves. Cavin gets called up to the U seventeens,
respect Gasdag get to Hungary, Maribo, Israel, DJJ Tahiti, Blake
goes to Jamaica, and I think we uh Bueno also
(22:52):
got caught up to Venezuela. So you know, everybody wanted
to question this roster, but you know who doesn't question
this roster their home countries.
Speaker 6 (23:02):
So I was thinking about this the other day.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
We if you looked, we are probably second or third
in MLS with players being represented. I think you've got
some numbers.
Speaker 5 (23:11):
On that, not specific numbers, but I was thinking about
this the other day, right, and just little, just a
little quick anecdotes walking down the street. I think it
was on JFK, doesn't matter, and I was walking down
the street and I was thinking, man, the Union always
have a lot of call ups, like Gano daz Dag
is always getting called up for Hungary. You know, Jose
was always getting called up for Venezuela. Obviously Andre is
(23:32):
always going to get called up for Jamaica, and then
we would also have like Damian Lowe, we'd have you know,
when we had Powell here, you know, Nate and Harrell,
even Matt Real back in the day, Quintin Sullivan. All
these guys get called up and I'm like, that's awesome.
But also when we're in a league that plays during
international breaks, that kind of sucks because I recognized, like
(23:54):
when you get the guys from Cincinnati, right, neither or
the guys from Columbus, Like you get the KUCO and
all these guys now right, they're phenomenal players, They're great players.
They have experience playing in leagues all over the world.
They're they're top players. Are they playing internationally for their countries?
(24:16):
Are they cracking their international squads ever?
Speaker 2 (24:20):
Yeah? Good, good question.
Speaker 5 (24:23):
And the reason why I say this is does that
mean they get to hold on to them longer during
seasons when we play games when we're missing Andre Blake
for games at a time because he's with Jamaica, We're
missing our number ten for games at a time because
he's with Hungary during the Euros, Like, do they lose
their star players as much as we do because of
call ups.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
Well, certain leagues have certain rules, so of course, of
course championship or in lower leagues in England do not
have to guys, because they're not only international break.
Speaker 5 (24:54):
Yeah, I don't think the US does. The USLS and
they're guys. Ever, we're gonna have to first maybe some
small leagues. All I'm saying is I'm saying this is
really cool and this is great for the league. But
like if we're going to continue to play in the
league that's not gonna take pauses during international breaks. It's
gonna really suck when when teams like Columbus or Cincinnati
(25:15):
invest in really good Argentinians that are not gonna play
for Argentina so they don't have to worry about them
leaving for Argentina, but are really really good Hungarians are
the best for Hungry, so they're gonna leave every euro
ye present.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
The Union have six, Yeah, the Crew have six, LAFC
has six, Minnesota has seven seven, so we are in
the top of distributing out So then you know, it
is what it is.
Speaker 5 (25:40):
If LA and all the rest of these teams can
maintain and float, we should be able to This goes
back to the depth conversation.
Speaker 6 (25:46):
Yeah, YadA, YadA.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
But I just found that interesting when I thought about, like, man,
the Union are always sending a very healthy amount of
their first team on international duty, and thankfully we have
a break this time.
Speaker 6 (25:59):
But during the Euros we did it.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
Sebastian, how many guys when you were playing? Do you
think we had get called up for international duty on
the Union during during your time? It wasn't that many.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
No, it was not that many. It was not that many.
And if he was, it was more the young guys.
Speaker 4 (26:17):
You know, we are like going to U eighteen or
you twenty. But now beside Andre Jamaica and I'm thinking Valdez.
You know, so many went for Columbia I'm thinking, but yeah,
not too many.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
Yeah, I'm wondering how that is going to affect the
guys coming back from Europe or from wherever.
Speaker 6 (26:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (26:42):
But again but again, like it's like you said, it's
like we have a lot of good players, but they
are from a you know, smaller country, let's say, football wise.
So when you have a big nation Brazil, friends or
you know, it's like the cream of the cream. You know,
it's like you need the best player when you have
no disrespect, but you know, Jamaica or you know, uh,
(27:02):
let's say Hungry or let's say.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
Exactly team.
Speaker 6 (27:09):
You can definitely baseball team.
Speaker 4 (27:11):
Yeah, I mean, which is you know, okay, but it
just let's say, if it's the best player of those
country and they play for the national team, it means
a club, bigger club will want them, probably before the
union and much more money.
Speaker 5 (27:25):
And basically, what I'm just saying is I'm not even
really belaboring the union or the player itself. I'm just
looking at MLS and saying, stop playing during international breaks.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
That's real.
Speaker 5 (27:36):
That's really the call I'm making is, please, MLS, can
we stop playing during international break?
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Yeah? You're hurting your product on the field, You're hurting
your and you're hurting I mean, look, I don't know
how MLS truly views us as a market.
Speaker 5 (27:47):
I would like to think they think we're a big market,
but they never treated us as such. They never tried
to treat us as such for whatever reason. But I'm
ultimately trying to say, is you're really hurting us in
Red Bull and all these other clubs time after time
by putting us on the back foot when we have
to play matches with our U seventeens because half of
our team just got called up for the Euros.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
Well, also our U seventeens get caught up too.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
For the.
Speaker 6 (28:13):
Perfectly exampled Yeah, well.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
We've got just one week of international duty to get through.
We get to watch Team USA. I will actually be
in Kansas City that weekend, but I don't think I'm
making the game ironically enough, so we'll see how they
do without the coach. But maybe he'll show up for
the Cincinnati game, where we'll get into that at Do.
Speaker 5 (28:32):
You go into any Royals games while you're out there,
I have to see if they're playing.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
I don't know. That's a really nice it's Nice's nice.
It's just because they renovated, renovated, renovated when they should.
But they are pushing for a downtown stadium. But that's
enough Kansas City knowledge for right now. We don't need
that Union news. Guys. Urai's contract option for next year
triggered automatically triggered because of the performance metrics. So love
(28:56):
him or hate him, he back. I don't like.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
He's one of my favorite Union players ever because he's
never going to be understood. Yeah, like I think it's
it's weird because there's gonna be in the future when
the Union spend more money on players and then he's
he's going to be contextualized better as a signing. But
because he is the biggest transfer fee of all time
for this particular free franchise.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
And he's a quiet player. He doesn't say a word
even on the field, like he does his job. He
puts his nose to the grindstone. That type of thing.
Play ninety that's another and then one more thing. And
I want to get Sebastian's opinion on this, just because
it hits Allie wants one more year. He's come out.
(29:40):
He said it on a podcast with Herk Gomez, one
of the Men and Blazers. Ali wants one more year.
What what's everyone's thought, Sebastian, Alejandra Bodoya one more year?
Speaker 3 (29:52):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (29:52):
No, I mean listen, as a player, it really sex
to retire. I didn't want to retire too, but I
did reason. But if I could play right now, I will,
And I mean like it's I was with you know Union,
use the academies morning and be on the field like
you just you see that practicing. You want to practice,
(30:12):
but you know, and then I did one move was like,
oh yeah, no, I cannot do that anymore. And it's
you know, it's a it's hard, but in the same time,
if you really can, I mean, listen, why not. But
in the same time, it's like you you like.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
You need to get managed more.
Speaker 4 (30:29):
Like you know, again offense, early he was a fantastic,
great player. But when you see some game, he can
be great, you know, like for good forty five minutes and.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Then you don't see anything.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
And physically, like when you do every three days a game,
it's it's hard, especially in the weather, like with the hit.
We got like a couple of weeks and I think
you didn't see the iron row like you saw you know,
two years ago. You know, so it's can it be yeah,
But then I think it's he could definitely resign, but
it's he okay to not play. It'sy okay to just
(30:59):
be maybe kind of a player coach, you know, with
with Jim, he could be happening.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
You know, there's a lot of possibility.
Speaker 4 (31:07):
And then it's you know, for which amount of money
is okay to sign because you know you're all complaining,
but you know, he was making a lot of money,
definitely to take it, but again, the Union doesn't have
as much money to pay a guy with my my
plane or here and there, and not sure if he's
going to stay healthy. It's it's a gamboard, but I
it's it's hard to tell. You know, he's one of
(31:28):
the best you know who play for the Union, and
you know to to stop or to don't see him.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
You know, he has to come from him.
Speaker 4 (31:35):
But if he wants, if he has a you know,
mentor to stay healthy, work harder, to keep up you
know the level, it could be possible. I'm not saying
it's not, but to maintain it's hard.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
You know.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
I would love personally to see Ali retire with this club.
I think he's a future Ring of Honor inductee, but
I don't trust Jim Curtin to manage Alejandro Badoia next year.
I think he's played too much and I don't want
to see a great player not be a great player anymore.
(32:13):
I don't want to see Steve Carlton. As my example,
not a lot of people will remember because it's a
lot older, but this is a Wow Hall of Fame
Cy Young Award winner that would not let go of
his career, and he was a shell of himself. And
I really don't want to see that. I mean intellectually,
Alejandra Bodoua is there forty minutes a game. I'd be
thrilled with that. But I don't know if the coaching
(32:36):
staff or if Alejandra would let himself be managed that
way to only come in for that much that I
would sign up for.
Speaker 5 (32:44):
He has to be self aware. I mean, like, like,
what's that as saying is true? Like, I look, I'm
thirty four and I'm still looking at a lot of
people when I play sports. I'm just like, you know what,
I could probably still get out there. I can probably
I can probab And I'm not talking about soccer. I'm
talking about the things that I actually do well, like baseball, frisbee,
(33:04):
that kind of stuff that first off, I can do.
Speaker 6 (33:07):
That's till I'm seventy five. Don't frighten me with a
good time.
Speaker 5 (33:09):
But what I'm saying is it I hope he gets signed,
Like I mean everything I say to have.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
The highest levels of respect for Alejandro.
Speaker 5 (33:20):
I want this is I don't want this to be
anyone to clip this as a hot take or anything
or anything like that. I hope he gets signed by
San Diego. I hope he goes in the expansion draft.
I hope San Diego signs him as a captain. I
hope he becomes a leader there. He helps usher in
a new brand of soccer into Southern California.
Speaker 6 (33:40):
I hope Landon Donovan.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
Or whoever is the I think they got their coach
already and he's a US could.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Be the current. You yeah, the current, the twenties coach
that's coaching the Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (33:52):
I hope that the connection point is there.
Speaker 5 (33:55):
I hope he gets involved with US soccer because I
think he has a lot to say about that.
Speaker 6 (33:58):
I hope he gets in the politics, you know.
Speaker 5 (34:01):
I hope he goes into you know, look, I'll just
go back to Jersey and make some impacts.
Speaker 6 (34:06):
You know, probably doesn't maybe go back to Miami. I
don't know. What I'm saying is.
Speaker 5 (34:12):
The Union don't need to move on from Ali Jundra Padoya,
but I think they should. And the reason why I
think they should is I think it signifies the transition
of what your franchise needs to go through. I don't
believe the Union will ever rebuild because it's just how
they're built as a franchise. I don't see a rebuild happening.
(34:34):
I always see retoolings, and I always see parts being filled.
I see a boat that's going to stay the same
boat with halls being filled as opposed to them building
a new boat. And with that being I think the
biggest issue with Ali Hondro this year was it was
necessity that midfield was pretty thin, and we really want
(34:54):
to have a conversation about it, that midfield was pretty thin,
and what it was most thin on was leadership. It
was most then on a person who could just get
everyone shit together. Sorry for the curse, but like for
someone who could get everyone together in a manner that
worked out well.
Speaker 6 (35:11):
You need a general out there sometimes.
Speaker 5 (35:13):
And the thing about this is we have a lot
of kids out there, a lot, and some of them
are older, but we do have a lot of kids.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
I wish this was Philly's sports talk radio, not a
pod because I'd be like six one oh five five five.
Speaker 6 (35:23):
But like Blaze, you can double in.
Speaker 5 (35:25):
But it's just like that's the thing for it for
me is I think Alejandro Badoya his biggest strength for us.
Speaker 6 (35:34):
I mean he scored a bunch of goals, He's assisted
a lot of goals.
Speaker 5 (35:36):
He's played a physical brand of soccer that has helped
this team tremendously. I think his biggest points has been
his leadership. Oh, I think that he is coming in
from day one. I actually remember to have a quick anecdote.
I remember going to I believe it was one of
the pints and furs back in like Pets Pines for pets.
Speaker 6 (35:55):
It was like pines Refers, Pestzer Pets. It was like
maybe six years ago.
Speaker 5 (36:00):
Like just when Alejandro just got signed, and this is
when we had the entire US national team on our roster.
Speaker 6 (36:07):
Who was a gucciane who was here?
Speaker 5 (36:09):
You still had Charlie Davies was here, Chris Panias was
like everyone from that era of US soccer was on
the team, and they just like Alijidro Badoya And it
was just like, and I'm talking to Maurica do currently rehabbing.
We think he's about to come back from Bethlehem all
this stuff. We don't know that his career is essentially
for US over at the time, but and I don't
think he knew even but we're having the conversation with him,
(36:31):
I'm like, so, Alejandro's captain right now, and Marisa Duo
had been captain since almost the minute he got there,
and I'm like, what are your thoughts? And he was
just like, I think he there's no other person who
should be captain of this team now. And that was
when he was the active captain and this is six
years ago, and he was like, the leadership of Alejandro
is that big?
Speaker 6 (36:52):
Just he's just like he is. It's natural.
Speaker 5 (36:55):
You know, I'm paraphrasing, but he's basically just calling him
a natural born leader.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
From then, Yeah, I mean, this is going to be
the most interesting off season in Union history. I think
by far. There's there's a lot of guys out of contract.
There's people like Alejandra Badulia, does he come back? Does
he not? And let me just tease a little rumor.
I'm hearing the Union spring training will not be in
Clearwater this year.
Speaker 6 (37:18):
Now, that's as big as anything I've heard all season.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
Is we will we will let people know as we
confirm and hear more possible trips for the pod. But yeah,
they're they're they're they're switching locations for this year and
it could be big. I'll just leave it at that
until we hear more. Myrtle beach, no beach be a
little bit better. But and League News that I have
(37:41):
a personal thank you to send out to MLS soccer
dot com. Thank you. They finally got rid of the
we worship at the alter of Messy site. If you
notice that you've looked at the MLS website right, you
go a third of the way down and there would
just be this blanket of pink throw up, and it
(38:03):
was just what MESSI ate for breakfast, what he had
for lunch? Is he learning another language? Everything? It was
just on Miami base. They finally got rid of it.
I'm looking at the site and it's not there, and
I just want to thank MLS Soccer that I don't
need to see this every day. Thank you, thank you,
thank you.
Speaker 5 (38:18):
You were sipping that mystic mountain blue pink lemonade, hater
aid right now, man.
Speaker 6 (38:24):
First, look, you have to sell the MESSI man, I get,
I get it.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
I didn't need to see it all the.
Speaker 5 (38:30):
Time, No, I get Look, is it disrespectful to all
the fans of Major League Soccer who were here before
he showed up?
Speaker 6 (38:35):
Yes? But how many of US were here before Beckham. Yeah, no,
you you.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
Were Euros.
Speaker 6 (38:45):
We don't do that to me.
Speaker 2 (38:46):
And speaking of faithful to the end. US Open Cup
final September twenty fifth, you can get it on Apple
TVAF So all you people that missed the US Open Cup,
here's your chance. You can tune in September the twenty fifth,
ten thirty. Ye, what a great time it is. The
ratings on that is gonna happen.
Speaker 6 (39:06):
Look, and here's the problem with that.
Speaker 5 (39:07):
The like the Open Cup had an ultimate year, this
is the year that the Open Cup could have said, Hey,
we're gonna go right up against the League's Cup. And
all these people love us still, and you see how
many of these supporters groups are in our favor and
boycotting this thing and asking for us back. So we're
gonna put our final on at the worst possible time.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
Yeah, all right, we're gonna We're gonna try to wrap
this up. So one more reminder, you're Philadelphia Eagles Friday
night in Brazil, Sebastian, how do you think Eagle's gonna
beat the Packers? Oh you're you're mute.
Speaker 3 (39:41):
I say the footboard.
Speaker 5 (39:49):
As if it is a soccer do and then I
will do the math conversions after that calculator.
Speaker 4 (39:55):
Yeah, I know, I think even if as a of
the national team technically and also Yellow and the Green,
I fear thes are going to win that game. It
was gonna be, you know, very interesting. But I know
already there's a ton of Eagles fan who made the trip,
and you know it's definitely a one of a kind.
(40:16):
So hopefully, yes, they bring back a nice first win
and all my good players and my fantas the team
are doing good.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
And in front of the pod, Matt Linda Moof is
down there. I don't know if you saw that suba
who Matt Linda Mooth.
Speaker 4 (40:30):
Yes, yes, I I thought, yeah, Maria so yeah, so
they always go with their friends.
Speaker 2 (40:37):
Yeah, so yeah, I'm picking the birds to Adam.
Speaker 6 (40:40):
Oh no, he's going with the birds here.
Speaker 5 (40:41):
But honestly, Brazil could have done the funniest thing ever
and just put blue trim somewhere on that uniform for
like the globe in the middle of the Brazilian flag.
Speaker 6 (40:50):
That would have been Honestly, I don't know, I know
what thought about that. Just put like a little blue
ball in the middle.
Speaker 5 (40:55):
Of the g for for Green Bay. It would have
been a nice little touch. I'm just saying we've been good,
and hopefully.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
Brew Hose shows up in his Eagles jersey just to
support Philadelphia Branson's He's down there real quick.
Speaker 5 (41:05):
The fact that they're wearing black helmets gave everyone the
speculation of, oh, they're doing.
Speaker 6 (41:09):
It for the gangs, and I'm like, no, I just
listen a second please.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
And then last, let's go, guys, Miami Union. What do
we think we're gonna get? Do we think win?
Speaker 6 (41:18):
Louse, draw three or three times?
Speaker 3 (41:21):
Who summer to ten days? Guys at those things can
happen if if I go right now, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (41:30):
I'm yeah, I see the tie or wins Union.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Calvin Sullivan ties it up in the ninetieth minute one one.
Speaker 6 (41:38):
Oh can you see the internet? Can you just imagine you.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
Would have their own section on MLS dot com.
Speaker 5 (41:45):
Union, you're good at marketing. Cavin has to play against MESSI.
That's has to if we're if we're going full capitalism
on this Union has to play against MESSI has to happen.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
All right, gentlemen, thank you so much. Once again. Episode
eighteen is in the books Exes in the U covering
the Union Verse and we will see you in a
week or so. Thanks a lot everyone, Thanks Seba, Thanks Adam,
